Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is an unshakeable icon — unbreakable , even. The past few years reminded us just how grand her legacy is. In 2019, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and enjoyed her Metamorphosis Las Vegas residency. Last January, the fiercely private star allowed the world into her personal journey with A&E and Lifetime’s Janet Jackson two-part documentary. And in December, she announced her 2023 Together Again Tour .

A 33-date trek across North American arenas/amphitheaters, it kicks off on April 14 in Hollywood, Fla. and follows both 2017’s socially conscious State of the World Tour and her four-month, 18-show 2019 Metamorphosis residency in Las Vegas. With a truly staggering catalog filled with chart-topping albums and singles, it’s difficult to tell what tunes Miss Jackson will choose.

Will she revive her previous ideas from 2020’s Black Diamond World Tour (which was canceled due to the pandemic) or completely scrap them? How will she celebrate this May’s 30th anniversary of her blockbuster fifth album Janet ? Will she forgo her usual offerings of ‘80s classics and replace them with deep cuts? Aside from Ludacris as the opening act, who will be the special guests?

There are many questions as to how she’ll fill up a standard two hours, but we attempt to answer them all below with our dream setlist for the Janet Jackson: Together Again tour — a journey through over three dozen of the pop and R&B legend’s classic tracks, deep cuts, features and collaborations. Now, let’s get to grooving!

“Together Again” (Intro)

To set the tour’s reunion theme, the night will kick off with the twinkling ballad intro of this The Velvet Rope classic, as various clips of Janet Jackson throughout her career play on the screen. But before that familiar uptempo kicks in, the screen’s imagery shatters and distorts to reveal the icon standing on the stage dressed in an avant-garde Rick Owens outfit. Now with the spotlight officially on her, we’re ready to start the show.

The concert has no choice but to kick off with a dance track (this is Janet Jackson, after all). But rather than immediately hopping into the ‘80s classics as most of her tour openers have done, we’ll head into the future with this 2007 electropop jam.

“All Nite (Don’t Stop)”

As the stage lights lower, Janet’s dancers get into formation before the lights quickly begin to flicker to the beat of this bass-driven Damita Jo single. The venue feels like we’re in a club and the concertgoers’ energy is officially rising.

It’s time to throw it back to the classics. Janet switches her structured Rick Owens jacket for a dramatically padded sequined black blazer — a nod to the ‘80s, when her transitional Control album was released — as she says “How are you all feeling? It’s great to be together again!” The audience replies with thrilled shouts as she pops and locks through the song.

“Nasty” / “What Have You Done For Me Lately”

“GIMMIE A BEAT!” The 1986 smash “Nasty” was the hammer that broke Janet’s sweet “girl next door” mold and allowed her to embrace her womanhood, while “What Have You Done For Me Lately” revved up the sass. She embodies a youthful spirit as she swivels her hips and growls the lyrics to these funky classics.

“The Pleasure Principle” / “Miss You Much”

The stage is awash with a vibrant purple hue (another nod to the ‘80s) as Janet’s dancers roll out a large mirror and a few chairs onto the stage for the dance routine. Both of these songs feature iconic chair-eography, which has since inspired everyone from Britney Spears and Mya to Tinashe and Normani. But here, Miss Jackson If Ya Nasty shows the ladies how it’s done.

“Dammn Baby” (Interlude)

At this point, Janet is completely free on stage and ready to dance even more. During this interlude to 2015’s breezy Unbreakable single, she does a quick outfit change into a ripped t-shirt and leather joggers so she can really bust a move.

“Rock With U” / “When We Ooo” / “SloLove”

It’s now time for the night’s first three-song medley. Janet whispers “Strobe lights make everything sexier/ Shadows dancing on the wall” from “Rock With U”, with the stage lights reflecting her seductive commands. The singer and her dancers continue their disco-inspired routine as they move and shake into the next two tracks.

“Love Will Never Do (Without You)”

The abundance of love is near tangible in the venue, and Janet cannot stop smiling as she looks at her fans in awe. “This next song is dedicated to all of you, can you feel the love??” she asks, as the bassline kicks in for this sparkling Rhythm Nation 1814 single.

“Alright” / “Escapade” / “When I Think of You”

The feel-good vibes continue with this next medley, as Janet and her dancers hop into the Cab Calloway-inspired routine of “Alright” as the video plays on screen. Once the other infectious songs from Rhythm Nation 1814  and Control kick in, everyone in the venue is already on their feet.

“You Want This”

With Janet celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the singer uses the following concert section to channel the album’s theme of sexual freedom. The playfulness of this single, which samples Diana Ross & the Supremes’ 1968 song “Love Child” and Kool & the Gang’s 1973 song “Jungle Boogie”, does the trick.

Just as everyone is bouncing to the jams, the stage lights temporarily cut out to shocked gasps. “Wait, what’s happening?” fans ponder as red strobe lights cut through the darkness. Once the industrial synths of “If” rip through the speakers, it’s clear we’ve now been transported to an underground European club.

“Throb” / “Free Xone” Mashup

The club kid spirit heightens even more with this dizzying mashup of diehard fan-favorite deep cuts from Janet and The Velvet Rope . Once it ends, fans find themselves glistening with sweat as they reach for their drinks to cool themselves off.

“That's the Way Love Goes” / “No Sleeeep” / “Got ‘Til It’s Gone”

Whew , that was a whirlwind huh? At this point, everyone (the fans and Janet alike) needs to catch their breath, so let’s slow things down with this sultry mashup. The singer saunters across the stage while snapping her fingers to the hypnotizing Janet single, before leading into Unbreakable ’s quiet storm groove. When “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” kicks in, her dancers re-emerge to perform a laid-back ‘90s hip-hop routine.

“Come Back to Me” / “Where Are You Now”

Janet is mainly known for her high-energy tunes, but this is the moment where she reminds everyone of her equally strong ballads. She takes a seat on a high stool to belt these soulful R&B love songs as the stage lights twinkle a sky-blue.

“Any Time, Any Place” / “Poetic Justice” Mashup

Still sitting on the stool, Janet bops along to this PDA anthem with sounds of rain and thunder rippling through the venue. Before the singer reaches the bridge’s climax, two dancers on the opposite end of the stage perform a sultry routine to Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s “Poetic Justice” collaboration (which famously samples “Anytime, Any Place”).

“Love Scene (Ooh Baby)” (Interlude)

Let’s keep the lustful vibes going, shall we? Janet quickly disappears from the stage as this All For You deep cut plays, signaling that it’s sex o’clock.

“Rope Burn” / “Would You Mind” / “Discipline” / “Moist”

Part of what’s made Janet such an icon is her unapologetic sexual liberation, and this medley honors that. “Mmm, my lips hurt” she moans through the BDSM anthem that is “Rope Burn”. She then unleashes her inner fantasies, breathily murmuring and purring through the next songs as she urges to touch, suck and lick and begs for punishment. Throughout this time, she calls back to 2001’s All for You Tour, where she brings up an audience member to tease on stage.

“I Get Lonely” / “What's It Gonna Be?!” Mashup

The passion peaks with this mashup, as Janet rips off her shirt to reveal a lace bustier with pierced nipples (a naughtier nod to the iconic “I Get Lonely” video). She’s then joined by her dancers for the routine. As she sings “Gonna break it down, break it down, break it down”, the audio switches to her after-hours 1999 collaboration with Busta Rhymes.

“Someone to Call My Lover”

For the concert’s final act, Janet is now ready to celebrate joy at its fullest. Once the jangling guitar riff of “Someone to Call My Lover” (which samples America’s 1972 hit “Ventura Highway”) blasts through the speakers, the fans are ready to dance once again.

“Doesn’t Really Matter”

For her final outfit change, Janet places a studded orange leather jacket (a nod to this music video) over her bustier and switches her leather joggers for khaki cargo pants. The look is easier to move in as her and her dancers break out into the classic routine.

“All For You” / “R&B Junkie” / “Make Me”

The concert’s over (or so the audience thinks) and Janet wants to make sure everyone leaves in good spirits. This high-energy medley urges everyone to leap out of their seats as they dance and shout the lyrics of each song, taking selfies and videos to capture the moment forever.

ENCORE: "Scream"

Don’t go just yet, there’s more! Before the lights get a chance to fully lower, Janet’s silhouette is awash in bright white and the “Scream” video plays on the screen. The crowd is whipped into a frenzy as they watch her master the floor routine alongside her similarly legendary brother, Michael.

“Rhythm Nation”

The singer is now reunited with all of her dance crew to perform the iconic, military-inspired routine to “Rhythm Nation,” with fans mimicking the same moves in the venue’s aisles.

“Together Again” (DJ Premier Remix) / “Together Again”

The concert officially wraps with a full-circle moment. Janet teases the lyrics of “Together Again” while the instrumental of DJ Premier’s hip-hop remix plays in the background. She reminds the audience about the importance of inclusivity and the power of love before jumping into the original version of the Hot 100-topping house anthem. Janet thanks everyone for coming and says once more that she loves them, a genuine sentiment that fan will feel hours after the concert ends.

When Janet Jackson showed up Friday on ‘Today,’ she likely didn’t expect the outpouring of admiration that came from superfan host Sheinelle Jones.

During Jackson’s encore performance of “Together Again,”Jones joined her onstage. The “That’s the Way Love Goes” artist extended an invitation for the broadcast journalist to be one of her backup dancers for the day after Jones channeled Jackson for the 2019 Halloween episode of NBC’s “Today” show.

“I would love for you to join me,” Jackson told Jones a few months ago while promoting her tour on the morning program. “You should.”

Fast-forward to this weekend, when Jackson gave Jones a backstage tour and a rare interview reflecting on her life, career and upcoming documentary, which will include footage from the Together Again tour.

“Maybe it’s because I’m not as shy as I used to be,” Jackson said of her decision to document this phase of her journey. “I’m a little bit more open to sharing more in my life than I ever did before.”

The Hollywood Bowl 2023 lineup includes Janet Jackson, Culture Club and movies galore

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season lineup on Tuesday, including opening night with Janet Jackson, a Beach Boys fireworks spectacular, a 90th birthday tribute to Quincy Jones and more.

Feb. 7, 2023

After practicing for hours with Jackson’s backup dancers and alone in her hotel room, Jones performed a short routine to the tune of “Together Again” alongside her idol at the Hard Rock Live.

“Last night I kept trying to find the place between being out of my body and trying to stay in my body and actually get on that stage,” Jones said Monday on “Today.”

“When I was in high school, I had pictures of news anchors on one wall, and then I had pictures of Janet Jackson on another ... and when I was in seventh grade, I would make up dances to Janet. And so to be on that stage last night, it was ... surreal.”

Jackson’s Together Again tour encompasses more than 30 cities across the United States and Canada, including five stops in California. The veteran musician is scheduled to come to Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, Highland and Mountain View in June.

On June 10, Jackson will headline opening night of the Hollywood Bowl’s 2023 season with support from Ludacris and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s youth orchestra.

Janet Jackson in Dubai in 2016.

Janet Jackson’s 30 best songs – ranked!

As the singer announces she’s selling memorabilia including a wedding dress and tour outfits, we assess her greatest works

30. Feedback (2008)

A career curio, 2008’s Discipline album was mainly notable for what it lacked, with no songwriting input from Janet Jackson and no songs written with longterm collaborators producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Still, its Darkchild-produced lead single is a metallic-sounding, electropop-leaning behemoth built around the uncompromising lyric, “heavy like a first day period”.

29. Better Days (2001)

The upbeat All for You’s closing track is the sound of Jackson letting go, or as she put it, “untying the knots that were choking me”. That sense of release permeates a song that blooms from a small ballad into a sweeping, mid-tempo 60s reverie that utilises a skipping guitar solo and lush orchestral flurries.

28. 2 B Loved (2015)

While much of eleventh album Unbreakable sees Jackson musing on topics such as loss and injustice, it still finds time to showcase Jackson’s unshakeable ability to project happiness like a beam of light. The squelchy, hand-clap heavy 2 B Loved stacks layers of Jackson’s pillow-soft vocals until it feels as if you’re floating on a candy floss-scented cloud.

Janet Jackson at the 2018 Essence festival in New Orleans in 2018.

27. Enjoy (2006)

This track from 2006’s oft-forgotten 20 Y.O album sits so neatly in Jackson’s sweet spot – you can practically hear her beaming that famous smile as she sings – that it almost feels parodic. In fact, it’s so effortlessly breezy, it manages to make the children’s choir that appears towards the finale sound transcendent.

26. The Great Forever (2015)

Musing on the public’s obsession with her personal life, the decidedly odd The Great Forever (at one point, a sneeze is offered a quick “bless you”) opens with Jackson seemingly impersonating her most-famous brother over a grinding bass line. It’s built around a typically sky-scraping Jackson chorus, with melodies tumbling over themselves as it ramps through the gears.

25. Rock With U (2008)

Created specifically for her gay fans, this throbbing dancefloor anthem from Discipline – co-written by Ne-Yo – could easily have nestled on X, Kylie’s similarly minded album released the previous year. “Strobe lights make everything sexier,” coos Jackson, clearly not with a sticky-floored provincial club above a Wetherspoon’s in mind.

24. Strawberry Bounce (2004)

Damita-Jo saw Jackson not only experiment with her sound – Richard X, the DFA and Basement Jaxx were approached for sessions – but also her alter egos. The lascivious Strawberry Bounce – co-produced by then-newcomer Kanye West, who creates the song’s backbone out of a chopped up Jay-Z sample and a glockenspiel – showcases Strawberry, who promises to be a lover’s sex-focused playground.

23. Someone to Call My Lover (2001)

Over a sampled riff taken from 70s rock band America’s sun-dappled Ventura Highway and a web of splintering synths, All for You’s second single is Jackson at her most straightforwardly goofy best. “Maybe we’ll meet at a bar, he’ll drive a funky car,” she coos, lost in the possibility of brand new love.

Jackson in 1993.

22. Shoulda Known Better (2015)

Opening as a delicate ballad before blossoming into a dance behemoth, Shoulda Known Better finds Jackson asking for global unity while also touching on how little has changed since she posed similar questions on 1989’s Rhythm Nation (“I don’t want my face to be a poster child for being naive”). Like 1997’s Together Again, it heals pain through the freedom of pop.

21. Got Til It’s Gone (1997)

A year before 1997’s personal opus The Velvet Rope, Jackson signed a record-breaking $80m deal with Virgin. It’s tempting to wonder what the label made of this, the album’s decidedly low-key lead single, a mellow, J Dilla-inspired ode to taking nothing for granted that fused a Joni Mitchell sample with a Q-Tip verse, and that was purposefully made chart ineligible in the US.

20. R&B Junkie (2004)

Gliding around a sample of Evelyn “Champagne” King’s 1981 disco-funk classic I’m in Love, the immaculate R&B Junkie was another victim of Jackson’s post-Super Bowl blacklisting. She sounds in her element throughout, all giggles and effervescent “oohs”, while Jam and Lewis encase her pure pop vocals in an early 80s glitterball.

19. The Best Things in Life Are Free (1992)

Recorded for the soundtrack to Damon Wayans comedy Mo’ Money, this duet with Luther Vandross sounds like new love. The pair are almost giddy with excitement as they race around Jam & Lewis’s featherlight concoction, all sugar-coated synth strings and a chorus that feels like a warm hug after a first kiss.

18. Come Back to Me (1989)

Critics often discuss the “slightness” of Jackson’s voice – ludicrous given the amount of genres, tones and moods she’s able to effortlessly crisscross – but her delivery on this soft-focus ballad perfectly matches Jam & Lewis’s silken production, all tactile beats and sighing strings. Her best ballad? Probably.

17. I Get Lonely (1997)

Leaning closer to neo-soul and pure R&B, The Velvet Rope’s crisp, expertly polished third single finds Jackson wallowing in her sadness. Eschewing a propensity for close mic ballads anchored by breathy vocals, here everything is turned up to 10, from the sky-scraping chorus to the horn stabs and Jackson’s yearning vocals.

16. Any Time, Any Place (1993)

Built around twinkly percussion, delicate rainfall and what sounds like the rise and fall of someone sleeping, the Janet album’s slow-burn epic represents Jackson’s peak sex-jam majesty. While her later attempts at recreating the candlelit mood often slip into unintentional comedy (see Damita Jo’s graphic Moist), here there’s real, tangible yearning at the heart of the song’s excellent chorus.

Jackson performing the the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011.

15. All Nite (Don’t Stop) (2004)

Lost in the maelstrom of controversy that followed Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” at that year’s Super Bowl half-time show, this sweat-drenched single feels like a lost classic. Built around a lithe bassline and Jackson’s trademark breathy vocals, it fuses elements of house, electro-funk, R&B and Latin to create a heady, future-facing concoction.

14. Control (1986)

Having ditched her father as her manger, divorced her husband and moved out of the Jackson family home, Control finds a 20-year-old Jackson channelling that desire to prove herself into a big bold statement. It’s a typically taut funk workout, but the highlight comes when the music drops and Jackson sings “Got my own mind, I want to make my own decisions”. Pop heaven.

13. Miss You Much (1989)

Instantly iconic for its chair-based video choreography (later referenced by Britney Spears for 2000’s Stronger), this lead single from Rhythm Nation 1814 is Jackson’s biggest hit on the US chart. Balancing Jackson’s keening vocal with sky-scraping synth stabs, a wobbly guitar figure and that staccato chorus it feels more like a demand for attention than a quiet plea.

12. All for You (2001)

Keen to return to the dancefloor after the introspection of The Velvet Rope, All for You feels like a throwback to the effortless, loved-up optimism of her 80s imperial phase. Dismissed by some critics as “frothy”, it luxuriates in its post-disco influences, while lyrically it’s Jackson at her cheeky best, not least when she shrugs at a guy with “a nice package” and says “guess I’m gonna have to ride it tonight”.

11. When I Think of You (1986)

Jackson’s first US No 1 single set the template for Jackson’s deliciously breezy take on loved-up pop. Effortless, like Whitney Houston’s best 80s moment, the chorus’ lyrics – “When I think of you, baby, nothing else seems to matter” – sound like they were sung right in the middle of a dawning realisation she had found the one.

10. Together Again (1997)

Inspired by losing a friend to Aids and a letter she was sent by a young fan who had lost his father, this soothing balm in song form initially started out as a ballad. The final version ups the tempo, Jackson soaring over pristine dance-pop that places the song’s immaculate chorus front and centre.

9. That’s the Way Love Goes (1993)

After a run of full-tilt singles throughout the 80s, this hypnotic opening salvo from the softer Janet album was seen as a risk. Leaning more into languid, won’t-be-rushed R&B, it takes the feeling of sliding into silk sheets and turns it into a song, all honeyed, multi-tracked vocals and slowly unfurling melodies.

8. Island Life (2004)

Co-written by British pop star turned hitmaker Cathy Dennis, the seductively buoyant Island Life is the musical equivalent of that exact moment a bronzed, diving body pierces the surface of a crisp, cold swimming pool. It’s a Solero in musical form. It’s Lilt, three ice cubes and a clean beach towel. If it’s not on your barbecue playlist in July, then no one’s coming, sorry.

7. Rhythm Nation (1989)

With its post-apocalyptic setting and stylish unisex military outfits, complete with augmented flat cap, it’s the video for this near title track that typically hogs the spotlight. But the song itself is no slouch, channelling metallic new jack swing, banging industrial funk and a chorus-line of regimented soldiers on backing vocals. Even its earnest lyrics feel like proper rallying cries in this context.

6. Nasty (1986)

Released a year before brother Michael started dabbling in harder-edged, more aggressive pop on Bad, the youngest Jackson sibling went playfully confrontational on Control’s second single. Written after being harassed on the street, it’s a swaggering kiss-off to “nasty boys” buffed to a high-gloss sheen. The lyric “My first name ain’t baby, it’s Janet – Miss Jackson if you’re nasty” elevated it to pop canon status.

Jackson in 1989.

5. Empty (1997)

Years before the internet changed dating for ever, Empty explores the strange disconnect of trying to build relationships via a computer. Its forward-thinking subject matter is matched by the music, which cocoons Jackson’s delicate vocals in a bed of jittery, double-time beats and a swirling synth line that sounds like a laptop coming to life. Basically invented “alt-R&B”.

4. What Have You Done For Me Lately (1986)

Control’s opening statement immediately dismisses the pop ingenue caricature created via Jackson’s rightfully forgotten first two albums. Harnessing her newfound freedom, Jackson takes aim at some hapless ex (“little things are all you seem to give”), while Jam & Lewis channel ex-collaborator Prince for the spectacular funk backdrop.

3. Love Will Never Do (Without You) (1989)

It’s a sign of just how great a singles act Jackson was in the 80s that this slice of pure pop ecstasy was Rhythm Nation’s seventh single. Another US No 1, it was initially billed as a duet with Prince, hence Jackson’s singing lower for the first verse. If the joyful little melodic lift into the chorus doesn’t make your stomach flip, I’d see a doctor.

2. If (1993)

The Janet album’s frantic second single is a lesson in pent-up desire. Musically, it constantly feels like it’s on the verge of blood-pumping implosion, unable to control swirling guitar riffs, stuttering synths and an escalating chorus melody that never quite reaches its climax. It’s a similar story in the lyrics, as Jackson details vivid masturbation fantasies, lost somewhere between passionate desperation and playful teasing.

1. Escapade (1989)

Pure joy is hard to get right in song. Go too far and it becomes jazz hands-level cloying. Too sickly sweet to really hit the mark. Try too hard to find that sweet spot and you end up showing your workings and losing that key sense of effortlessness. Everything about the undeniably joyous Escapade, however, is perfectly constructed; there’s that twinkly opening riff, the cute “let’s go” ad-lib, the full throttle charm, and the way the seemingly never-ending chorus makes you feel like you’re on a bouncy castle. As lockdown lifts, lyrically it couldn’t be more relevant, either; I, too, hope you can find the time this weekend to relax and unwind.

Janet Jackson’s ‘Together Again’ 2024 UK and European tour dates are:

SEPTEMBER 25 – Paris, France, Accor Arena 27 – Birmingham, UK, Utilita Arena 28 – London, UK, The O2 30 – Glasgow, UK, OVO Hydro

OCTOBER 1 – Manchester, UK, Co-op Live 3 – Antwerp, Belgium, Sportpaleis 5 – Munich, Germany, Olympiahalle 6 – Cologne, Germany, LANXESS Arena 8 – Berlin, Germany, Uber Arena 10 – Amsterdam, Netherlands, Ziggo Dome

Reviewing Jackson at Glastonbury back in 2019 , NME described the set as “a pop megamix, a stadium production and the making of a new ‘legends slot’.”

It added: “Janet Jackson was not booked for that slot, so she decided to carve her own, brand new legends slot instead: a full-scale dance production with stage set crammed into a 50 minute slot at the arse end of Saturday afternoon.”

The singer kicked off her ‘Together Again’ tour in Florida earlier this month, showcasing a host of hits and rarities.
