For wildlife enthusiasts, simba safari is a great opportunity to unplug, discover and experience these magical lands, return home, watch the movie and reconnect back. However, if you are a cinephile, consider this safari as a very valuable gift from us.

Shimba Hills National Reserve Destination Guide Kenya Destination Guide

kenya simba safaris

The Shimba Hills National Reserve being only 60km from Mombasa, is ideal for a day visit. It contains one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa and is where a great diversity of Kenya's plant species are found, many of which are endangered. The Shimba Hills National Reserve is home to many Elephant, and is the only place in Kenya where tourists can see the Sable Antelope.

Shimba Hills National Reserve is 300 Km2 and protected by the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS). The reserve is well known for its large elephant population, which in the early 2000’s became unsustainable. In 2005 KWS translocated over 150 elephants to Tsavo East National Park, it was described at the time as “the single largest translocation of animals ever undertaken since Noah’s ark”.

There are still over 500 elephants in the reserve, which causes tense human wildlife conflicts with the subsistence farmers in the area. To help reduce this conflict the Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary was established and shares a boundary with Shimba Hills National Reserve providing the elephants a migration corridor.

The Reserve is also known for its excellent birding opportunities and twitchers can search for the Croaking Cisticola or the Zanzibar Red Bishop. Due to the thick nature of the forest, game viewing is not as rewarding as on the savannahs, as many animals spend their time deep in the forest. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it makes the wildlife encounters that you do have, that much more spectacular. The best time of day to go for a game drive would be in the late afternoon, when the cooler temperatures lure the animals out of the shade and seek water.

The magnificent 21 m high Sheldrick Falls are in Shimba Hills; the late David Sheldrick, founder of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, once explored this area, whilst flying over the area he discovered a hidden waterfall within the Shimba Hills National Reserve, and subsequently had the falls named after him.

Getting to Shimba Hills National Reserve

From Mombasa or Diani Beach the road is good, it is about an hours drive from Diani Beach.

Airport - Moi International Airport in Mombasa

Shimba Hills National Highlights and Attractions

  • The only place in Kenya you can see Sable Antelope
  • Guided forest walks up to the scenically beautiful Sheldrick Falls
  • It is known for its herds of Elephants
  • Visit the Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary
  • Scenic viewpoints and five picnic areas

What to do in the Shimba Hills National Reserve - The Kenya Wildlife Service offers guided walks to the Sheldrick Falls - a great opportunity to see the birdlife in the forest. Game drives are more adventurous than on the savannahs as animals are harder to spot.

You can also go for sundowners on Pengo Hill, which faces west and watch the sun drop down below the horizon. On a clear day you can see the Tsavo Plains and Mt Kilimanjaro.

The Experience

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is perfectly situated for a day trip if you are staying in Mombasa or Diani Beach. The Reserve is characterised by rolling hills which are covered in coastal forests which forms an important plant biodiversity area; as over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found here including rare cycads and stunning orchids.

The Reserve is home to the last breeding herd of Sable Antelope in Kenya and you should keep a lookout for these large ebony coloured antelope with their scimitar shaped horns.

Explore the reserve on guided game drives with a local tour operator. The roads are undulating and steep and a 4x4 vehicle is needed to navigate them. One of the most memorable activities on offer is a guided walk through the forest with a Kenyan Wildlife Service's Guide - who takes you through the forest to the beautiful Sheldrick Falls.

There are also some great hiking trails you can follow for a pleasant afternoon ramble to the picnic sites and lookout viewpoints. As there are both elephants and buffalo in the reserve it is highly recommended to hire a guide to walk with you, plus of course the guide can point out a multitude of animals and plants that you may otherwise miss.

Marvels of Uganda Safari

Kenya: Safari like Simba

The lion king gets a live-action remake this summer, and specialist safari operators are jostling for a spot on pride rock..

The quintessential image of the African adventure: see it with your own eyes.

Starring Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Seth Rogen, the new live-action version of The Lion King will hit the silver screen in July, inspiring another generation to follow in the paw prints of its leonine cast. But, cute lion cubs aside, taking centre stage in this much-anticipated film will be the region’s wild, evocative landscapes themselves.

The Serengeti is the loose setting for The Lion King ’s fictional Pride Lands, and while Pride Rock itself isn’t a designated place, the area’s numerous kopjes (granite outcrops) make brilliant doubles of the platform on which baby Simba was first held aloft by wise old Rafiki. Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, meanwhile, was said to be the inspiration for the place that Mufasa was trampled by a stampede in the original; the same archaeological site where British paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey made her seminal discovery of a 1.8-million-year-old hominid skull in 1959.

The new Disney blockbuster means rich pickings for specialist Africa operators, too. The Safari Collection has launched a Lion King Adventure safari, visiting the animals and locations that inspired the movie. Led by fourth-generation Kenyan Robert Carr-Hartley, consultant for the original 1994 film, highlights include a stay at Borana Lodge in Laikipia, with sundowners on the ‘Pride Rock’ kopje overlooking Hyena Valley Dam, where you can spot Scar’s barking sidekicks, and flights out to lion conservation areas around Samburu and the Maasai Mara to camp out and track big cats.

But getting this deep into Simba country doesn’t come cheap. Aimed at families, this seven-night trip costs £23,458 for four, including full-board accommodation, game drives, road transfers and domestic flights.

Three African odysseys for less

Guided by locals  A walking safari is the original way to discover the bush . Tanzania’s northern parks have a long tradition of walking safaris, but the newer Kenyan conservancies also offer non-vehicle tours, too. Five nights from £3,000 per person. expertafrica.com

Big cat conservation  Stay at a field station and volunteer alongside locals and conservationists to help protect the Maasai Mara’s wildlife. 13 days from £2,322 per person. biosphere-expeditions.org

Off-grid adventures  Combine a stay at a safari lodge with nights at its temporary ‘fly’ camp. Choose from several camps in the northern Serengeti, from £935 per person per night, all-inclusive. serian.com

These 'Lion King' Safaris in Kenya and Tanzania Will Show You the Real-life Pride Lands

kenya simba safaris

Now you can see Simba's real-life kingdom for yourself on "Lion King"-themed safari in one of the most beautiful regions on the planet.

In honor of the upcoming remake of the Disney classic, which opens in theaters on July 19, two luxury travel companies in Kenya and Tanzania are offering "Lion King"-themed itineraries to explore the lands and animals that inspired the films.

Starting in July, Zicasso will be introducing its "Family Safari: Pride of Africa" itinerary , an 11-day safari that takes you from the Serengeti to Nairobi on a fun-filled adventure for the entire family. The trip includes 10 nights at luxury accommodations, meals, daily game drives, four private tours, airport pick up and transfer, and local flights.

Guests will be traveling throughout Tanzania and Kenya with safari guides who are experts about the environment that inspired Mufasa's Pride Lands, especially lions, and will be able to have some close encounters with wildlife including elephants and giraffes.

Stops include three nights in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the inspiration for the "Carefree Lands" where Simba learned how to live by "hakuna matata." Next, guests will go to the Olduvai Gorge, the site of the wildebeest stampede and Serengeti National Park. The trip then continues to Nairobi, Kenya, where guests will stop at Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Centre, and get an up close and personal glimpse at the endangered Rothschild giraffe. Other stops include the Great Rift Valley and Hell's Gate National Park.

Prices for the Zicasso itinerary begins at $5,625 USD per person , based on six people traveling in double occupancy. International flights are not included.

Original Travel is also debuting a "Lion King"-themed safari in July. This 14-day itinerary takes you through the Masai Mara, a popular safari spot to see the annual wildebeest migration , and one of the real-life inspirations for the Pride Lands.

Guests will stay for three nights at a premier lodge in the Mara, where they can get some personal glimpses at the real animals that inspired memorable characters like Simba, Zazu, the chattering hyenas, and more.

The itinerary involves two nights meeting giraffes at Nairobi's Giraffe Manor in Kenya, four nights at a luxury lodge overlooking the Laikipia plateau, and a final four nights relaxing on the beach. Some of the highlights for the journey include stargazing in the Samburu (just like Timon and Pumbaa), visiting Ndare Ngare Forest (where Nala found Simba), and visiting David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which works to rescue orphaned elephants.

Prices for this trip begin at $8,335 per person .
