A lone tree - Kodachadri trek

Trekking in Kodachadri (2024)

One of the most awe-inspiring and demanding treks I’ve undertaken in the Western Ghats is the journey to Kodachadri Peak. Renowned and celebrated among trekking enthusiasts, the Kodachadri trek is prominent on the bucket lists of adventurers exploring South India. Here, I’ll provide all the essential details you need to embark on this exhilarating Kodachadri trek.

Kodachadri Peak is technically more of a hike than a trek. However, in India, the term “trek” is commonly used to refer to both hikes and treks. So, for this post, I’ll be using the term “trek” to describe the experience of visiting Kodachadri Peak.

Where is Kodachadri?

Located in Karnataka , Kodachadri is a prominent mountain in the Western Ghats of South India. Nestled within the confines of Mookambika National Park, this mountain is the 13th-highest peak in the region, towering at approximately 1343 meters above sea level.

Renowned as one of the premier trekking destinations in Karnataka, Kodachadri derives its name from the indigenous Kutaja flowers, earning it the charming moniker the “Jasmine of the hills.”

Covered in fog - Kodachadri trek

Optimal for trekking, the period between September and January is considered the prime time to conquer the heights of Kodachadri Peak. The weather is delightful during these months, and the verdant mountains offer a captivating spectacle. It’s worth noting that the trek to Kodachadri Peak can be conveniently planned as a weekend getaway from the bustling city of Bangalore .

How to Get to the Kodachadri Base?

The starting point of the Kodachadri trek is from three villages:

  • Kattinahole and

Kodachadri Mountains

Trekkers have the flexibility to choose their starting point for the Kodachadri trek. Drawing from my experience of undertaking the Kodachadri trek twice, I embarked on my first journey from the quaint village of Nittur, approximately 110 kilometres away from Shimoga. It’s important to note that several places in Karnataka are named Nittur.

On my second adventure, I commenced the trek from Kattinahole, a charming village within the Hosanagara Taluk of Shimoga. During that memorable weekend, our accommodation was arranged at Sri Ambika Homestay, conveniently located just a 15-minute drive from the starting point of the trek.

Kodachadri lies approximately 400 kilometres from Bangalore city, and traversing this distance by car typically requires around 8 hours and 10 minutes for a one-way journey. The route heads towards Tumkur and includes stretches of toll roads.

By Public Transport

  • For the latest train schedules and route details, travellers can visit the IRCTC website.
  • It’s recommended to check the Redbus website for up-to-date information regarding bus services. When opting for bus travel, it’s advisable to choose Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, as the government operates them.

Bangalore to Nittur

  • The nearest railway station to Nittur is Kundapura railway station, which is well-connected to Bangalore and has frequent train services. The distance between Nittur and Kundapura railway stations is approximately 61 kilometres.
  • From Kundapura railway station, travellers have the option to reach Nittur by either taking taxis or local buses.
  • Additionally, there are numerous bus services available between Bangalore and Kollur. The distance from Kollur to Nittur is just 21 kilometres, making it a convenient travel option for those coming from Bangalore.

Bangalore to Kattinahole

Kattinahole, a quaint village in Shimoga district, lacks extensive public transportation options.

  • The most convenient way to reach Kattinahole is by taking a bus to Shimoga and arranging a taxi or a shared vehicle to get to the village.
  • Alternatively, travellers can inquire with the homestay owners to check if they can organize a pickup and drop service for added convenience.

Trekking in Kodachadri

The trails of the Kodachadri trek lead trekkers through a diverse landscape of villages, waterfalls, forests, and paddy fields. Along the way, hikers encounter a historic temple dedicated to Goddess Mookambika, believed to have been constructed a millennium ago.

Certain sections of the trail - Kodachadri trek

As mentioned previously, trekkers can embark on a journey from various villages to reach the peak. Two villages from which I trekked to the summit are Nittur and Kattinahole.

If you’re in search of some accessible one-day treks near Bangalore, you’re in luck! Here’s a curated list of the top 14 One-Day Treks from Bangalore to explore.

Starting from Nittur

During my initial expedition to Kodachadri peak, I embarked on the trek from Nittur village.

  • Starting Point : Nittur.
  • Finishing Point : Kodachadri Peak.
  • Total Distance : 20 kilometres.
  • Type of Trek : One way. Alternatively, you can opt for a jeep ride downhill. It’s important to note that the roads are suitable only for 4-wheel drives.
  • Grade : Difficult, as the trek entails steep and rocky terrain.
  • Time Required : Approximately 6 to 7 hours.

On this route, you’ll encounter the captivating Harishinagundi waterfall. Remarkably, the water exhibits a yellow hue upon contact with the ground. However, please exercise caution as this waterfall has numerous water snakes.

Starting from Kattinahole

During my second adventure to Kodachadri Peak, I initiated the trek from Kattinahole.

  • Starting Point : Kattinahole. It’s conveniently located just a 15-minute drive from the homestay where we lodged.
  • Total Distance : 11 kilometres.
  • Type of Trek : One way. Alternatively, you can opt for a jeep ride downhill. Please note that the roads are suitable only for 4-wheel drives.
  • Grade : Difficult, owing to the steep and rocky nature of the trek.

Hidlumane waterfall - Along the way to Kodachadri peak

Along this route, you’ll encounter two waterfalls. The first is smaller in scale, while the second is the magnificent Hidlumane waterfall. What makes the Hidlumane waterfall particularly remarkable is the opportunity to stand below and behind the cascade, offering a truly awe-inspiring experience.

Trekking / Hiking Agency

As mentioned, I’ve had the pleasure of completing the Kodachadri trek twice. I joined Exotic Expeditions the first time, while the second time, I opted for the Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC). Both experiences were fantastic, and I wholeheartedly recommend both organizations.

That said, for treks within Karnataka, I frequently choose BMC. In my opinion, they stand out as one of the premier trekking agencies in Bangalore. Their treks are meticulously organized, and their trek leads are enjoyable and highly responsible.

  • Trekking Agency : BMC .
  • Cost : INR 4250 + GST. Be sure to visit their website for updated prices and availability.

Important Trek Information

  • Trekking in Kodachadri doesn’t require formal permissions. However, your bags will be inspected for plastic by forest officials before entering the sanctuary on the day of your trek. Should any plastic be found, it will be noted, and a deposit will be collected. This deposit is refundable upon your return only if the plastic is accounted for.
  • Throughout the trek, you’ll encounter water streams where you can refill your drinking bottles. It’s advisable to carry water purifying tablets for safe drinking water.
  • On my initial visit to Kodachadri, I camped at the peak. However, the forest department prohibited camping at the peak in 2015. Alternative accommodations include Battara Mane in Nittur or Sri Ambika Homestay near Kattinahole. Additionally, you can book the PWD Guest House well in advance for your stay.
  • Food options are available at the homestays or villages, negating the need to carry your own. However, I recommend packing trail snacks for convenience.
  • While trekking, intermittent mobile network coverage (Airtel, Jio, and BSNL) is available along the trail.
  • Lastly, be prepared to encounter leeches on the trail.

Did you know that Kodachadri is renowned as one of the prime spots to witness the Milky Way in India ?

Other Important Safety Information

Here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience:

  • Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes, especially as sections require rock climbing.
  • Carry an extra pair of socks for the trail to stay comfortable.
  • Don’t forget to bring your first aid kit and any necessary personal medications.
  • Bring at least 2 litres of water, as there are waterfalls and streams along the way where you can refill your bottles.
  • Pack trail snacks such as energy bars, chocolates, and dry fruits, as no shops are on the trail.
  • Ensure your lunch is securely packed in a tight lunchbox within your bag.
  • Beware of leeches, particularly during the post-monsoon season. Use a diluted mixture of Dettol and water to spray on your shoes and socks as a preventive measure.
  • Wear full-sleeved t-shirts and pants to minimize insect bites.
  • Take all your garbage and avoid littering the trail or surrounding areas.
  • Be prepared for cold weather and rain by bringing a rain jacket or poncho and a jacket. Don’t forget to cover your backpack with a rain cover.
  • Show respect for nature by refraining from writing on trees or rocks and avoiding any damage to vegetation.
  • Refrain from picking flowers or harming trees during your trek.
  • Exercise caution around waterfalls and consult with local guides before swimming or jumping into the water.

Is Trekking in Kodachadri Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

I would strongly advise against embarking on this trek alone unless a reputable trekking agency accompanies you. The mountains and forests in this area are untamed, and there’s a significant presence of wild animals.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

For safety reasons, it’s always preferable to trek with a group or under the guidance of an experienced guide who is familiar with the terrain.

Kodachadri Trekking Guide:

There are two trekking routes to the Kodachadri peak. One is from the Kattinahole through Hidlumane falls and another trekking route is through Santhosh hotel, Valur. Both of the trekking routes will be explained below.

Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls Kattinahole

If you want to attempt the Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane falls then you will have to start from the Kattinahole. There is no proper trail from the Kattinahole to the Hidlumane falls as it crosses farms, villages, grasslands, and uneven trails. However, there is a proper trail from Hidlumane Falls to the Kodachadri peak which joins the Kodachadri jeep trail until the peak

  • Kodachadri trek distance via Hidlumane falls: Around 10 Kms
  • Trekking time: Around 6 Hours (Including breaks & fun at the Hidlumane falls)

Kodachadri trek via Santhosh hotel, Valur.

The second route starts from Sampekette-Kollur-Nagara road. Just search on Google maps for Kodachadri Trek Trail, Nagodi, Karnataka  and it will land you there. From there, there is a direct trail to the peak.

  • Kodachadri trek distance via Santhosh hotel, Valur: Around 10 Kms
  • Trekking time: Around 7 Hours

Kodachadri Contact information:

  • Kodachadri temple priest: 09632847302
  • Rajendra (trek guide & accommodation): 09449145540
  • Santhosh Hotel: 08185290183/ 094838116911

Kodachadri Camping information & Permission:

You are not allowed to pitch the tent at the Kodachadri peak. By sunset, you will have to return to the Kodachadri Information bureau/ the PWD house where you can pitch your tent but only after asking their permission. Sometimes, they charge for camping also like rupees 150 per head.

The Kodachadri trek falls in the middle of Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary but you don’t need any permission for the trek of Kodachadri. But if you are planning to stay or camp peak of Kodachadri hills during the night then that is not allowed. You will need to plan your stay to nearby places like Kollur andKundapura.

Best time to visit

Just after the Monsoon ends or during the winter days are the best period from my personal understanding to visit Kodachadri trek. But some people also prefer to visit during monsoons and summers as the view is far more clearer as post-monsoon and winter you might encounter fog while trekking. If anyone wishes to enjoy some real challenges of trekking then do visit this place during the peak monsoon along with the right gears for the trek.

Things to Carry

The best thing about the Kodachadri trek is that it is just one day trek. So it is not required to carry too many things which will make the already difficult trek difficult. But please do carry the essentials mentioned below:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Identity Proof
  • Water (1 to 2 liters)
  • Packed Lunch
  • Extra Clothes
  • Light Snacks

Kodachadri Jeep Ride

There are two options for the Kodachadri jeep ride. One is from the Kattinahole side and another is from the Kollur side. Both of the options have been explained below:

Kodachadri Jeep ride detailsfrom Kattinahole:

  • Jeep ride cost: Rs. 2000-2500 rupees (negotiable)
  • Number of people: Maximum 8 people per Jeep
  • Shared price: 200-300 per head in a shared jeep
  • Jeep location: Main jeep stand
  • Jeep ride timings: 30 mins one way or one hour to and fro
  • Extra time given at the top: 2 Hours
  • Sunset point from the Jeep drop point at the top: 2 km (40 minutes walk)
  • Kodachadri Jeep Timing: starting 6 AM in the morning

By Jeep to Kodachadri from the Kollur town:

  • Booking entire jeep: Rs. 2000-2500 rupees (negotiable)
  • Forest department opening time: Kodachadri Jeep starts at 6 AM in the morning

Kodachadri HomeStay:

There are a lot of Homestay locations around Kodachadri hills. Even there are many other options to stay in the nearby towns around which Homestays are located. But it is important to choose where to stay and which homestay to live in. The best place for Homestay that I would like to recommend will be Kattinahole. There is a lot of options for the homestays around Kattinahole.

Here is a list of the Kodachadri homestays around Kattinahole:

1. Chitrakuta Homestay 2. Sri Ambika homestay

These two homestays are located in the area called Mathikai which is around 3 Kms from the Kattinahole Kodachadri Jeep stand from where you can get a jeep ride to the Kodachadri peak. There is another Homestay near Kattinahole Jeep stand which has got some of the best Google reviews is Kodachadri Pathalagere Homestay Or Resort . The best option would be to stay in the Kodachadri Pathalagere Homestay Or Resort.

How to reach Kodachadri from Bangalore?

Kodachadri is situated at a distance of around 420 km from Bangalore. If you are not going to Kodachadri through any other trekking organization but you are going on your own then you might have decided to drive there. The distance of 420 Km can be covered in around 8 hours from Bangalore to Kodachadri.

The Best Driving route from Bangalore to Kodachadri: Driving along with AH 47

This route includes driving along with AH 47 or the Bangalore-Pune highway most of the time. The route includes Tumkur, Sira, Chitradurga, and finally, you take a left from Davangere. The drive until Davangere is around 250 Kms which takes around four and a half hours. From Davangere, the rest of the distance is around 180 Km which takes around four hours because it lies in the Ghats road.

Places of interest on the Kodachadri peak:

1. sarvajna peetha:.

Sarvajna Peetha is a small temple-like structure or also called Mantapa near the peak where Adi Shankara is believed to be had meditated.

Sarvajna Peetha, Kodachadri

2. Moolasth ana:

Just before the peak, an almost vertical path takes you to a small cave called Chitramoola, from where the Mookambika temple of Kollur is visible.

Kodachadri Trek | Jasmine of Hills

Kodachadri hills

Kodachadri Trek , located on the edges of Karnataka, sanctified with some of the most enchanting landscapes. Abode to abundant peaks and waterfalls. Kodachadri, the tenth highest peak of Karnataka, gets its name from Kodacha and Adri, signifying 'home of the hill jasmine flowers' in the local dialect. Otherwise called the Jasmine of Hills, the peak of Kodachadri is an ideal canvas to the setting of the renowned Mookambika Temple and the Mookambika National Park. Residing at the focal point of this National Park, Kodachadri bestows various opportunities to wildlife and trekking buffs. Kodachadri Trek is taking off high at a rise of 4406 feet; the Kodachadri summit is a dramatic peak with dense forest swathe surrounding it. Likewise, it is a characteristic territory to a dazzling scope of biodiversity, for example, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Langoor, and Indian Rock Python, alongside mountain vegetation and indigenous fauna.

How to reach Kodachadri Trek

Kodachadri lies around 20 km from Kollur. One needs to make a trip using Kollur to reach Kodachadri. Kollur is linked with urban cities in South India by bus. A lot of coaches run to Kollur from Bangalore, Chennai, and Mumbai. You can likewise get down at Shimoga that is 115 km or Kundapur 50 km, and afterward, take an ST bus to Kollur.

By Train: On the chance that you are travelling via train, you can get down at Kundapur and take a bus or taxi towards Kollur. Particular trains Kodachadri to Bangalore and Mumbai stop at Mookambika Road, Byndoor. If you alight here, you can reach Kollur within 60 minutes.

There are various routes to Kodachadri peak. Trails like Karekatte, which are comfortable, take you through tenderly rising forests and fields. Others from Sampekatte or Marakuttaka through Hidlumane falls, are steep and rugged; you may need to gorilla your way up clutching grassroots and finding your course to the top.

To reach Karekatte,  Kodachadri from Bangalore, you can take a bus to Kollur directly and alight at Karekatte gate, the starting point of the trek.

To reach Marakuttaka:  You will have to alight at Kollur and then catch a local bus/auto to Marakuttaka. From Bangalore, there is a direct bus towards Sigandur Cross. You can also board an ST bus from Shimoga towards Sigandur.

Kodachadri Trek route

From Marakuttaka, four checkpoints are markers on this path. The path from the base village is not well marked, and that is why it is smarter to be with your group to abstain from losing the course. This stretch is around two kilometers in length and goes through the thick wilderness. You'll be crossing numerous little streams in transit. Cross the stream. You will go past the town of Yemmeonda, a school, and afterwards to Hidlumane town. Twenty minutes of scrambling and faltering up the way after which you show up at the first milestone. A lot of paddy fields later, the course, at last, concludes at a house. The path here opens up into an open meadow that springs up suddenly amid thick forest trails. You will discover a few huts and agricultural land, which are the last signs of civilization until the top.

Kodachadri Falls

Not long after the clearing, we climb towards the falls, which is about another 20 mins climb. The trek gets harder as you'll be hopping on sharp and tricky shakes in transit. The subsequent achievement is the much-anticipated Hidlumane Falls, which is a mix of seven cascades. Nonetheless, your endeavours appropriately remunerated with stupendous perspectives on the main waterfall falling on you from 60 feet. You can top off your water bottles here as you're going to require it for the trek ahead. Not long after resting and having some good times at the falls, we proceed on the wilderness trail to the right. After 30 mins of trekking in a similar wilderness landscape, the way opens up to the prairies of Kodchadri. The high breeze up here makes it difficult for vegetation growth. Be that as it may, be careful this part is exceptionally steep, with the grade being near 60 degrees at specific focuses. A practically vertical hop on the first substance of the path over tree roots and tricky rocks from the Kodachadri Falls prompts more extreme meadows that, in the long run, end up on the head of the first peak of this trail. Here on, the path overlooks panoramic views and winds up and over a few slopes. This is the third achievement.

Kodachadri jeep ride

Around 45 minutes after, the path wanders to blend again until it joins the jeep trail that paves the way to the Kodachadri Temple. This is your fourth marker and is additionally the point from where you'll be boarding the jeep on your way down. From here, a rough path through a precipice's edge, at last, leads you to the Kodachadri top itself. You will discover the Sarvajna Peetha, a little sanctuary like structure made of stone where Adi Sankaracharya, an eighth-century Indian scholar, and scholar is said to have meditated. There is an Iron Pillar of around 40 feet erects before a temple close to the top of Kodachadri. Disciples believe that it is a Trishul used by Goddess Mookambika to kill an evil presence named Mookasura. This Iron pillar is made of pure iron and has no rust, even though it is standing under cruel Kodachadri weather conditions, like dampness and frequent rains.

Nagara Fort trekking information

Being simpler on the knees and simple to explore when we start losing light at night, the Jeep trail is perfect for returning to the base. A 3-hour climb along the path, and we are back to the base camp. The following day we spruce up, eat and leave our base-camp by 8 AM and continue to the Nagara Fort. It is located in the Shimoga area of the territory of Karnataka. Manifested in the sixteenth century, the remains of this fortification despite everything behold its old-world charm and substance of legacy. The stunning sight of the fortification that you'll get when we drive towards it will make you stop to visit the fortress. We will chill here for an hour and afterwards continue towards Bangalore.

Kodachadri Trek: Everything you need to know about!

Why should you go for kodachadri trek.

Kodachadri-Trek-Image-Muddie-Trails

If you have checked out with your trek loving friends in Bangalore, they would have surely bragged about a place called Kodachadri. Our trekkers loved this place so much that many people who did Kodachadri trek changed their definition of their favorite trek. That begs one question – what is so special about Kodachadri trek? Here are are the top 3 reasons to book Kodachadri trek package :

  • Simply because it is one of the most beautiful treks in South India. In terms of sheer natural beauty, Kodachadri competes with another fantastic place in western ghats called Kudremukh .
  • Kodachadri is the only trek where you need not trek back. Yes you read it right. We can actually return by an off-road jeep ride. It is very unique for Kodachadri because there is a broken mud road where only 4×4 jeeps can commute.
  • Having the luxury of traveling back by jeep means: 1. Trekkers can take their sweet time to hike up the mountain. Your trek-lead will not push you too much, except for occasional pep talk. 2. Trekkers can enjoy the amazing sunset that Kodachadri is famous for (in winters and summers).

We do not have this advantage for other treks in Karnataka because everywhere else, trekkers have to return to base before night falls. This means people have to start trekking back early enough. Once it is dark, you wouldn’t want to be outside there in western ghats, for they are famous for their snakes and other wild animals.

Things to expect on the Kodachadri trek

  • How do you feel if someone tells you there is a wonderful waterfall almost halfway through the trek, where you can take a relaxing dip (become a water baby), recharge your battery, and continue trekking up? Well, this is another unique feature of Kodachadri trek via Hidlumane waterfalls. Sounds fascinating, isn’t it? It will be even more thrilling when you are actually part of the trek.
  • Bonus trip to Malpe beach adjacent to Udupi town on Day 2.
  • Only one-way trek. Jeep ride while returning (as explained in the above section).
  • Lush green forest and mountains irrespective of the season. That’s why it is so beautiful.
  • A thrilling ridge walk during the trek where you can see a huge mountain dip going deep into the valley.
  • Many people will be there at the top, even non-trekkers coming by jeeps.
  • A fantastic sunset during sunny days.

Malpe-Beach-Image-Muddie-Trails

Kodachadri is located in the heart of western ghats at a distance of 414 Km from Bangalore. It is also very close to the west coast. We take this as an advantage to visiting Malpe Beach on Day 2 which is adjacent to Udupi town on the Konkan coast. Kodachadri falls under the Shimoga district of Karnataka which is also home to another extraordinary place called the Agumbe rainforest . All the mountain areas in Karnataka are logically named as a region called Malenadu . You would have heard this name from your Kannada friends. There is a famous song (actually there are many songs) describing its unique culture, beauty, and food. Watch it on Youtube here .

Kodachadri trek experience with Muddies

After the early morning hues and freshening up at our forest homestay, we will start our journey to a small village called Sampekatte nestled in the mountains, at the base of Kodachadri hill. A set of safety instructions will be given by our trek-leader(s) during the journey. After greeting our jeep driver, who will come to the top to pick us later in the evening, we shall meet our forest guide and start the trek from the forest department check post. The trek passes through a dense forest cover with huge trees. The Locus and other insects keep making loud screechy noises as we hike up.

Kodachadri-Waterfalls-Image-Muddie-Trails

After a couple of hours of trek, you will reach super fresh Hidlumane waterfalls. It’s a ritual for trekkers to shed inhibitions and take a chilling dip in this fresh mountain water. You can expect some leeches during monsoon months, like anywhere in western ghats, but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying this beautiful setting in the dense jungle. The result of playing in the water – we are extremely hungry. We will open our Lunch packets at a cliff close to the falls and savor our food. After waterfalls, nature starts opening up as we catch up some altitude. Surprisingly, we will encounter lush green farmland in the middle of the forest accompanied by plenty of Banana plantations which probably belong to local forest/temple authorities. As we continue our trek to the peak, it’s time to witness the true glory of mother nature and relish a precious natural setting. You will get to see numerous hills, valleys, grasslands, and birds-eye views of the surrounding forest. As we near the summit, a special attraction welcomes trekkers – a ridge walk where one side is the giant mountain and the other side is a deep valley. You will get to see colorful patches of Jasmine plants at the top. Kodachadri is also called “Jasmine of Hills” because of this phenomenon. A noteworthy place called “Sarvajna Peetha” (kind of a temple) is located close to the peak where Sree Adi Shankaracharya performed meditation. Late evening, we will head to the famous sunset point of Kodachadri overlooking deep valleys. Barring monsoons, sunsets are very clear and peaceful over here. If lucky, you will get to witness a deep red Sun setting into a thick cloud bed. On an extremely clear day, people can even spot the Arabian Sea from this point. The sunset experience would also give your body a much-needed break and relaxing time for the mind.

Kodachadri-Trek-Image-Muddie-Trails

By now, a call would have gone to our jeep driver who will drive uphill to pick us. We will walk for 30 mins to the jeep point. The ride is so bumpy, it’s not recommended for very old citizens or people with back pains. The ease at which jeep drivers turn their steering and change gears on tough trails feels crazy. Nevertheless, it’s an enjoyable ride in the evening chill after a tiring trek. You will alight the jeep, board our shuttle, and move back towards homestay with the remarkable memories of the Kodachadri trek.

The all-important: Stay

Our homestay is about an hour ahead of the Kodachadri base, deep in the rainforest. The village vibes you get here are just unparalleled. We deserve not just a lovely stay, but lovely hosts also. Isn’t it? We got this covered. Along with giving a warm reception, the hosts will also serve tasty and edible Malnad style food. As always, we have different spaces for men and women. In this case, the ground floor belongs to the guys and the first floor belongs to the girls. There are common washrooms in our home which are well maintained. We also have a few tents. Based on the request, we will arrange camping by pitching tents in front of the homestay. Being true localities, the hosts have been living here for generations, so it is completely safe and secure for travelers. Since it is located close to the forest without any light pollution, having a campfire under the cold night sky with plenty of stars gives an amazing experience here. The place makes you want more of it, especially because it doesn’t pull any carrier signal except for BSNL. When you are ready to check-out of the homestay on Day 2, the place tempts you so much that you will find it hard to leave. However, we have no choice but to continue following our Kodachadri itinerary towards Malpe Beach or Nagara Fort.

Kodachadri in different seasons

  • Monsoons: Being in the heart of western ghats, the months of June to September bring plenty of rains to Kodachadri. Thick clouds, intermittent rains, and leeches constantly accompany trekkers. There will be lots of water in Hidlumane waterfalls. Monsoon trek to Kodachadri is indeed famous among trekkers as it poses a different kind of experience. Our itinerary involves visiting Malpe Beach on Day 2. However, it’s not the season to play in the Sea. Hence, we usually explore Nagara Fort which turns very beautiful in these months with a green carpet of grass, visit rainforest water pools that are active in this season and then head to the beach town to chill out. This is the best time to visit Kodachadri as there are more places to explore.
  • Winter: Months from October to January attract plenty of trekkers. The rains would have reduced and landscapes would have turned slightly misty. There is a good amount of water at Hidlumane to play. The sunsets are usually pretty. The weather is mostly pleasant to climb during the day. Cold evenings and colder nights are the new normal. Malpe Beach gets colorful with lots of tourists. Watersports and Saint Mary’s Island may be opened based on Sea conditions which are added attractions. This is probably the best time for Kodachadri trek.
  • Summer: February to May offers clear views and amazing sunsets. The climate will be warm but still good enough for trekking as Kodachadri has a thick Shola forest. Hidlumane waterfall has enough water to take a refreshing dip. Great time to indulge in plenty of watersports and take a ferry ride to Saint Mary’s Island at Malpe Beach. Hot Sun and refreshing Beach are a perfect match.

Declared as a heritage site by the government of Karnataka, Kodachadri Trek is one of the best treks in India that you must head on soon. For a soul-satisfying trekking experience, you must be aware of the best time to visit Karnataka. According to the trekkers that have already conquered the Kodachadr mountain peak, the best months to head for a trek is between September to January. From pleasant weather to the best of flora and fauna, you can witness the real beauty of Kodachadr mountain peak during these months.

Itinerary for Kodachadri Trek

In terms of the itinerary, the place can be reached via two routes, one that includes the trails to Karekatte and the other one is where the trails reach around to Marakuttaka. The prior one has an easier trail and is best for the ones who are not pro in trekking and need an easy trail to visit and explore around.

The other one does have steep trails which are quite often tough to cover. It includes the Hidlumane falls in the process which is further quite beautiful but at the same time, dangerous as well.

The majority of the people suggest visiting Nagodi or Nittur and staying at the homestay options that are available there. This makes it quite easier for you to do the Kodachadri trek in monsoon and explore the place around. If you are taking the jeep and then trekking the last 5 km, getting a guide for the process is a good option for you to get a grip on things happening around. The guides are best if you are covering the entire trek on your foot.

Camping is also an option if you want to make the best out of the trip. The camping site is near the Kodachadri Information Bureau where you need to take permission to camp.

Second Part of the Trek

experience with the trekking trip

The second part of the trekking expedition starts from the parking spot from Shankara Peetham. From there, the final level of the trek includes 5 km that finally takes you to the Peetham. The one thing that stands out about this spot is the 40 ft iron pillar that stands tall in front of the temple. It is believed to be the rendition of the Trishul used by Goddess Mookambika to kill Mookasura.

If you want a one-of-a-kind experience with the trekking trip, then you must opt for the Kodachadri trek in Karnataka. Make sure that you do have everything planned out beforehand to avoid any last-minute surge prices or unavailability. It is best suggested to ensure that you do opt for the packages because those are often well planned out and provides a very streamlined experience.

Kodachadri Trek: The All-Round Trek In Karnataka

' src=

It’s been close to 7 years since my first hike in Goa. I’ve done close to 50 treks since then. But if there was one thing about a trek that eluded me for a long long time, it was the variety on the trail. One a fine Friday evening I packed my bags and started for Kodachadri to find out if this trail had what it took to satiate my hunger for variety. The Mookimabika wildlife sanctuary, apart from being the home to the 10th highest peak in Karnataka, the Kodachadri peak, also is the origin of two rivers. The Chakra and Sowparnika rivers originate in the Kodachadri hills and flow westward to join the Arabian sea near Kundapura.

During my research, I had a feeling that it might be the trail I’ve been looking for. It has the lush green meadows, towering steep climbs, milky white waterfalls but I had to hit the ground to see if it really ticked off all the boxes. Will it? Come, see it yourself while I take you on my quest to find the perfect trekking trail.

Friday Escapades

After what seemed like a never-ending Friday, I finally packed my bag and left my house to board the bus at HSR layout. And like every Trek with Plan The Unplanned, ice breakers followed once everyone boarded the bus. Every traveler I met was so welcoming and cheerful that there was never a dull moment in the entire journey.

kodachadri trek starting point

The icebreakers set the perfect stage for the adventure of a lifetime. This was the first long-distance trek for a majority of the group. But after a few games that helped us throw the word stranger out of the running bus, everyone was equally excited about the trek. We were gonna scale the mountain as on team :D.

Tranquil Mornings En Route Kodachadri

While most of the journey is on the highway the landscape transforms as you approach Hosanagara. It was probably 6 AM that I woke up as if some natural alarm banged my eyes open. I pushed the curtains aside and realized it wasn’t the natural alarm but nature itself. We were driving by a beautiful river. Since it was still early in the morning the water was still and the light was just enough for a perfect reflection.

I pulled out my phone to find out the name of the river. But to my surprise, it wasn’t a river but a drainage basin of the Sharavathi reservoir. We were almost at the edge of Sharavathi Valley. Monsoons are the best time to travel in this region of Karnataka. Due to the incessant rains, the entire landscape is painted in green.

kodachadri trek starting point

After some time we crossed Nagara and entered another forest stretch. The sun had slowly started to rise. And the gaps between the trees slowly started to turn orange like how a flower bud blooms revealing the bright orange of a daisy. The cold wid, dewdrops on the window, a slowly rising sun, and sprawling lush greenery. The entire journey felt as if it was setting me up for the journey ahead.

Intro To Eco-Tourism In Kodachadri!

Kodachadri trek is also very famous and unlike Kudremukh there is no restriction on the number of people allowed. So it is quite important to start the trek early to avoid the crowd. So, We quickly freshened up, had the delicious breakfast, packed our lunch boxes, and boarded the bus to reach the trek starting point where we also met our guide.

In Kodachadri, It is compulsory to take a guide along with you for the trek. In a bid to support the locals and preserve forests, the forest department encourages locals to become guides. Our guide during my first trip to Kodachadri worked in Shivamogga during the weekdays and guides travelers over the weekend to reach Kodachadri Peak.

He briefed us about the trek and we started the trek from the jeep stand. The trail road was surrounded by dense forest on one side and quaint homes on the other. The road kept my mind busy. If it was the kids playing outside their houses a few times, it was the music of running water streams that kept me busy during the other times. And soon after we crossed the last house, we were surrounded by dense fog.

Foggy Mornings On Kodachadri Trail

All the huge trees suddenly vanished from our sight leaving a faded silhouette. The guide was walking ahead and due to the dense fog, we couldn’t see ahead. So we had to literally run to keep up with the guide’s pace. Soon the guide appeared and he asked us to wait at the diversion while he went to the forest check post to buy entry tickets for us.

Into The Wilderness Of Kodachadri Hills

Once the guide was back, he asked us to take the right turn away from the jeep road. All we could see was a running stream. So we looked back at him again and he said, we gotta cross the stream. Although the stream wasn’t very deep, crossing it meant our shoes would get wet. But you gotta do what you gotta do, even if it means getting your shoes wet even before the trek hardly started.

Soon after crossing the stream, we spend some time to run off the water and resumed the trek. As we followed the trail, I spotted a beautiful house by the trail. Looking at the betel nut trees around the house, the cloud kissing mountains in the background, and the dense forest in between them, I felt as it was transferred to earth from a heavenly planet.

kodachadri trek starting point

We continued walking on the trail and soon it became even narrower. The trail was flat but during the monsoons, it was infested with leeches. As if that’s not enough, the entire trail becomes muddy and slippery in monsoons. With one careful step after the other, I continued the hike in the jungle. The initial stretch of the trail kept me so busy that I was constantly ducking under the branches, pushing that odd branch of leaves hanging stiffly in front of me, watching my step carefully.

kodachadri trek starting point

Because the trail is surrounded by tall trees, I didn’t get any view of the mountains or the peak. But what kept me entertained were the tree trunks. They came in all shapes and sizes. While most of the tree trunks were regular & rounded, a few of them had flanges and a few more had a combination of rounded trunks with flanges.

Level 2: Bhattara Mane, Kodachadri

We continued the walk under the shade, humming that odd song while the rustling of leaves, the burble of the water stream, and chirps of crickets added the chorus. Soon the distance between the trees started to increase and the trail got wider as if it was opening to the portal to another world.

kodachadri trek starting point

And just when I thought that, it was actually a portal. The trail lead us into a wide open ground, the kinds I remember playing cricket in my childhood. It almost felt like I was let go by a giant after holding me tight in his fists for an hour. While the cold wind on that open ground was in itself a huge reward, the mountain views in front of us just multiplied it.

Pro-tip : If you’re trekking in monsoons, be sure to not stop in damp areas unless you’re desperate for a blood-sucking relationship with leeches ;).

We continued the hike and after 50 meters or so, we saw another house. Fondly called as Battara Mane by the locals, it’s another police check post cum rest point. We recited our names to the guards like kids reciting ABCD and drank the thirst-quenching buttermilk which costs INR 15. The buttermilk got me thinking if the name was actually Butter Mane but then who cares about the English spellings for Kannada words.

kodachadri trek starting point

After a brief rest, we continued the hike. The view of Banana field, paddy fields, the betel nut trees, and ultimately the wild-wild forest must be having every shade of green ever known. I kept staring at this view as it felt so peaceful and I thought I won’t get this view again But once I started the trek from Bhattara Mane, the trail turned towards the paddy fields. We walked right through them reminding me of my childhood time in our paddy fields.

Paddy Fields And Forest En Route Kodachadri Peak

A Hike Along The Waterfalls

As the trail leads us into the deep forest, the chirps, burble, and the shade returned. The stream was so close to the trail and loud that it almost muted any dialogue between us. So with nothing to do but walk and listen to the lovely music of nature, we marched ahead.

kodachadri trek starting point

We soon came face to face with a waterfall that had a nice little jacuzzi at the bottom. The guide informed us that this was the lowermost waterfall of the Hidlumane falls. Wondering how many more were there in front of us I continued the trek.

I crossed the jacuzzi by carefully placing my steps on the shaky stones & ducking under a tree trunk to reach a rock. I climbed the rock and continued the hike on the muddy trail. A few minutes later, the muddy trail ended forcing me to get onto the rocky and slippery trail.

But at times, walking on slippery rocks is all you HAVE to do.

As I stood at the edge of the muddy trail, examining the trail ahead, a zillion ideas crossed my mind on how I can fall off and break my back. The trail had patches of rocks covered with algae. If that wasn’t enough, the rocks were slippery and inclined at a few locations. It’s a total nightmare when you place those slippery rocks under the blanket of a gushing water stream. This same stretch is very harmless after monsoons.

Walking On The Rocks-101

But such is trek life man, you never know what you are gonna encounter ahead. But this part of the trail taught me enough lessons on how to pick a choice. As I continued the trek, placing my feet carefully in between rocks and stretch to reach the next safe place and then did it all over again for a continuous 10 minutes. It was definitely a moment that made me think on my toes. But nature has it’s ways of rewarding your efforts and I realized this as I reached another waterfall. I thought this was the Hidlumane waterfalls and was getting excited that there wasn’t anyone there.

kodachadri trek starting point

The guide told me as I approached the waterfall that it was the mid-zone waterfall en route Hidlumane Falls. I sighed and continued turned around.

Soon after I turned around, I was surprised. There was an almost 60-degree steep slope staring right at my face. As if the rocky terrain earlier wasn’t enough, this steep slope was also completely rocky with stepping stones appearing sporadically.

kodachadri trek starting point

It was again, just a matter of time before we conquered that rock as well and the trail rewarded us with another relaxing flat muddy trail. This muddy trail had its own ups and downs like a snake moving perpendicular to the ground.

Reaching The Milky White Waterfalls

Perhaps the trail wasn’t very happy with our progress as it abruptly ended the muddy trail pushing us into the running stream. Without any sane option left for us, we continued the trek through the stream. Finding one sturdy rock after another, we reached a crossed over to the other side of this stream.

In one of the corners of the stream, I was lucky to find just enough light to attempt a long exposure shot. So I sat down and started clicking pictures. The gushing water or the slippery rocks, nothing seemed to make a dent in my determination. And after multiple attempts, I finally clicked my first ever, silky smooth waterfall picture.

kodachadri trek starting point

I continued the walk on this narrow rocky terrain and soon the milky white stream of water running over the pitch-black rocks drew our attention. The guide signaled that it was indeed the ever-gorgeous Hidlumane Falls. I was surprised looking at the crowd. The second time when we started at around 8 AM, we had almost the entire falls for ourselves. However, on the other two occasions, we had to share it with, god knows how many.

kodachadri trek starting point

Pro-Tip: So, it makes a hell lot of a difference at the waterfalls if you start early.

The falls create a jacuzzi under it which is just knee-deep. So, I left my baggage on the rocks by the falls, walked up to the falls, and sat down on the rocks right below the falls. The force of the stream was just right and it relieved me of all the stress of the trek. The sound was so loud that it almost created a barrier around me that didn’t let any other noise be heard. Sitting under the waterfalls is a meditative experience that I strongly recommend you to do.

Up, Up Here We Go! Where We Stop Nobody Knows

We played in the jacuzzi, clicked lot of pictures and started the hike again.

The trail starts with a rock climb right from the edge of the water stream. With wet shoes, wet and dripping clothes, it’s a huge task for anyone. But we weren’t anyone 😉 we were a lot of ones :P. We helped each other climb up the rock by lending support and pulling them up.

But soon after the climb, I realized that it was just a teaser of what’s ahead. Just a few steps after climbing up the rock, a steep muddy trail welcomed us. We climbed up slowly, one step after another, and reached the top. As if it was a video game, the trail leveled up and introduced a hairpin steep climb. While the entry was easier, to exit the steep climb, we literally had to hold any tiny plants we could to not fall back.

kodachadri trek starting point

Soon after that, it was time for the next level. Where there were tree trunks placed on the steep trail. We crossed over them and climbed up another steep slope to exit the forest cover.

The excitement of climbing up the steep slope didn’t last long when I looked at the trail ahead. All I could see was another towering, endless steep slope, filled with pebbles. We were already exhausted with all the climb. So we took a much-needed break before starting the ascent for what I came to learn as the Everest meadow.

kodachadri trek starting point

It was a very apt name considering the effort it takes to reach there.

Climbing The Everest Of South India

After a short break, I started the climb again. Taking it slow, one step at a time, bending forward to ease the strain on the knees. Halfway through on this trail strong wind started blowing sideways, trying to topple my balance, and the small pebbles made it difficult to get a good grip to walk straight ahead.

View Of The Steep Climb From Everest Meadow

So I resorted to a zig-zag motion and finally reached the top of the Everest meadow. I turned around to look at the trail I walked on but I saw something much more exciting. In the distance, beyond a small mountain, I observed amoeba-like water bodies. Is that what I think it is?, I asked myself looking at those water bodies in the distance.

View Of Sharavati Valley From Everest Meadow

Of course, it is what it is, the enchanting Sharavati Valley. I was so exciting seeing the valley that I didn’t give a damn about the drama that’s happening over the meadows in front of me. I fell in love reading about the biodiversity of the Sharavati valley and how it’s the only wildlife sanctuary in the world set up for the rare Lion Tailed Macaque. The view is etched in my mind even though my camera did a half baked job to capture it.

Everest meadow marks the second milestone of the trek and it was time for lunch. We opened our packed lunches & boy any Meghana or Paradise or Hyderbadi House biryani is no match to that Puliogare. Knowing myself, I knew it was a momentary feeling. It’s probably because of the tiredness from the trek or the surroundings that I still vividly remember the taste.

View Of Kodachadri Meadows From Everest Meadow

After that tasty lunch and recuperating some energy, we started the hike again. The trail flattened out over the edge of a meadow, followed by another steep descent, followed by few more minutes of flat trail and another moderately steep ascent later, we reached the jeep road. It is in this part of the trail that the meadows of Kodachadri Hills were distinctly visible. The lush green meadows during monsoons turn golden by the end of winter.

Seasons change, the colors change but my love for mountains never changes!

Giving Back To The Nature

During the second trek when the monsoons were at their peak, we stopped n the flat stretch after Everest meadow to plant seed balls. It was a noble initiative by Plan The Unplanned to plant seed balls along the trail so that people, animals, insects can reap the benefits. Seedballs are nothing but seeds wrapped in a solidified mixture of cow dung, cow urine & mud.

kodachadri trek starting point

One of the biggest advantages of seed balls is that you don’t have to dig but just press the seed balls against the soft ground. This was the real deal of giving it back to nature. After all, we were just borrowing the resources it provided us thus far. I felt so happy doing that activity & felt even better while explaining what we were doing off the trail to other trek groups 😀

Kudos to Plan The Unplanned for such beautiful initiatives.

Amazing Conversations En Route Mookambika Temple

The guide informed us that we were still about 4 KM away from the peak. So we continued walking on the jeep road. It was a comfortable walk barring close encounters with skidding jeeps at the corners of the road. The entire road is surrounded by trees on either side. It is on this part of the trail that I had some of the most interesting conversations in all the three treks. Probably because it wasn’t too hard to walk on, or there was nothing visible to see or click pictures of, or even because of the renewed energy from the lunch earlier.

kodachadri trek starting point

It was roughly 3:30 PM by the time we reached the Mookambika temple. We still had about 4 KMs left for the day, ascent and descent combined. Owing to the restrictions on vehicular movement into the sanctuary, we had to reach the temple back by 5 PM. While few wanted to rest at the temple, a majority if not all of the trek team signed up for the timed challenge. The temple is another place of religious importance not just for the locals but also for people from faraway lands. Mookambika Temple in the Kodachadri hills is dedicated to Goddess Mookambika who is believed to have killed a notorious demon named Mookasura.

Life Lessons From Trekking

The trail starts with a steep ramp built over rocks and turns leftward into another rocky steep climb. The end of this steep climb reveals the ridges and cliffs of Kodachadri Hills. Most of these ridges and cliffs were hiding behind a blanket of fog during the monsoons. But during the winter trip, I witnessed the raw beauty of Kodachadri Trek. I realized during the third trek that I was walking along the edge of a cliff during monsoons. Any mistake, I would’ve ended up deep inside the shola forests of Kodachadri hills and probably wouldn’t be alive to even write this travelogue.

kodachadri trek starting point

But, what were the odds of me falling off the trail?

Probably very very slim. Owing to my experience of trekking in the monsoons, the sturdy shoes, fit body, I can safely say that the chances were slim. But it sends a shiver down my spine when I think about the consequences of this low-probability event. The event if occurred would have dramatically changed my life forever, even put a permanent stop to my trekking self.

The Steep Drops Just Besides The Trail

I learned that it is these low-probability high impact events are all that matter in life. We usually keep thinking about high probability activities like graduating, getting a job, getting married, and living a comfortable life. But instead, it’s those life-changing, low-probability events like losing your job to a pandemic and their consequences are what we should spend our time on and prepare ourselves.

The Final Countown To The Kodachadri Peak

It took me a while to get my mind back to normalcy after that realization. After a series of steep climbs over rocks, accompanied by the wilderness of Kodachadri hills by the cliff-side, we reached the Kodachadri Peak. Sarvajna Peetham marks the end of the trek to Kodachadri Peak. Sarvajna Peetham is where Adi Shankaracharya meditated and attained “the wisdom of the world” hence the name Sarvajna Peetham. Though there are controversies over the period in which Shankaracharya lived, the Sarvana Peetham atop the Kodachadri Peak is at least 1200 years old.

kodachadri trek starting point

The view from the Kodachadri peak is washed out in monsoons. But I was lucky to see the beautiful landscape from the peak during the third trek. Apparently, one could see the Arabian Sea from the peak but to say the truth, I couldn’t see it. The wind was fast and cold, carrying the sweat of tiredness away from our faces, filling in a sense of joy & victory. The joy of reaching the peak restored in us the strength to trek through even tougher terrains and tougher times, both in the trek or otherwise :D.

Kodachadri Peak Conquered- Thrice

We trekked back to Mookambika temple where we had hot and delicious bajjis before getting on to the jeep. The Kodachadri jeep ride is one of the most adventurous rides you will ever go on. The road is muddy, slippery & dangerous. If you want to best enjoy this ride sit in the front row near the door. But promise me you won’t fall asleep as I did 😛

Post Trek Rituals At Kodachadri

At roughly 6:30 PM we reached the homestay. Took a nice warm shower and had the delicious dinner. Games, Bonfire, dance, and music followed. Amidst all the fun, I happened to look up and boy the sky was so inviting. I quickly grabbed my phone and walked away from the light into the darkness.

kodachadri trek starting point

The road was pitch dark and after a few meters, I stood there, under the starry sky hearing nothing but the rustling of the leaves of betel nut trees. While I was busy get the right picture, I heard some strange sounds. I was sure that it was the rustling of the leaves above. So, I left the starry night alone to live another day 😛

Trip Back In Time- Nagara Fort

We started early at around 8:30 AM from home stay after having yet another delicious meal at the homestay. The next destination was Nagara Fort. An 18th Century fort belonging to the Keladi Dynasty.

kodachadri trek starting point

Although the fort is now in a ruined state, the monsoons simply transform the landscape. The watchtower is still in one piece and gives you magnificent views of the Kodachadri Hills & the backwater channels of the Lingamakki Reservoir.

Nagara Fort In Monsoons

We spent close to an hour or hour and a half here exploring the ruins and clicking a lot of pictures. After a brief stop for lunch after Shivamogga, we played games and sang our way back to Bangalore.

Basically! Kodachadri Is Love

There are only a few things that one could ask for in life. The company of a beautiful bunch of people, a homestay with delicious home-made food, ZERO network whatsoever, and the most exciting trek in the Western Ghats that packs all kinds of trails in it. Every one of those three trips to Kodachadri has left me with so many lasting memories and people.

Now you know why Kodachadri has a special place in my heart 😉

In terms of the itinerary, there are two routes to reach Kodachadri. One route takes you through the trails to Karekatte, while the other leads you to Marakuttaka. The Initial Part of the Trek

experience with the trekking trip

During the first segment of the trek, you will pass through the Hidlumane Falls and then traverse the dense forest. Once you reach the halfway point of the mountain, you will come across a temple where you can take a break and explore the surroundings. Due to the uneven roads, jeeps are the sole mode of transportation available.

Camping is also an option if you wish to make the most of your trip. The camping site is located near the Kodachadri Information Bureau, where you are required to obtain permission to camp.

The Second Part of the Trek

How To Reach Kodachadri

The second phase of the trek begins from the parking area near Shankara Peetham. From there, the final leg of the trek encompasses a 5 km stretch that ultimately leads you to the Peetham. One notable feature of this location is the towering 40 ft iron pillar in front of the temple. It is believed to be a representation of the Trishul used by Goddess Mookambika to slay Mookasura.

For a unique trekking experience, the Kodachadri trek in Karnataka is highly recommended. Ensure that you have everything planned in advance to avoid last-minute price surges or unavailability. It is advisable to opt for pre-planned packages as they offer a more streamlined and well-coordinated experience.

CelebWatch: Shatner Gets “Weird” + Pine Goes To “Moscow” + Nimoy Wraps “Fringe” + Quinto On The “Margin”

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

Jeez, that photo of Nimoy is fierce! :D

I cant wait to see nimoy and the shat at vegas will miss them when their gone

Shats new show sounds fun–long as they dont make fun of believers cuz that could be bad n sad–

Like a jaunty “In Search Of…”

If I see one more word with quotes around it I’m going to “scream”.

Has Shatner seen Star Trek 11 yet?

How really cares. I don’t. maybe I did at one point. But I don’t now. Let it go. For crying….out….loud

“We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.”

In contrast to some of today’s Hollywood actor wannabees, Shatner can afford to not take himself too seriously. :)

Nimoy looks like an old, and very wise Spock on that photo. Acting retirement surely would be a waste of material…

#6 No, he’s busy having a life. :))

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

Wow whats up with Quinto’s nerdball galsses….First we see a hobo Spock and now dork Spock.

ZQ’s follow up tweet is hilarious!

Nimoy always look cool…kinda badass…you wish Fringe would throw a evil Spock beard on him! Shat looks kinda pudgy…a jolly old type… I was really hoping Mr Nimoy would make it in the new MI movie as Paris…maybe a evil Paris with a beard!

Jack Ryan before Star Trek or after???

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.

Quinto needs a fashion adviser.

I think Quinto should do a music video as Bilbo Baggins

Alec Baldwin was a great Jack Ryan. Tough act to follow (and I’m a big Ford fan).

16. Yeah! xD lol

Quinto is always dressed stylish, cool and modern- I love it. Zach, just rub some patchouly on yourself and get back to work please!!!!!!!! And Bleep Jack Ryan!
