Kwik Trip to change fuel payment options, requiring guests to pre-pay or pay at the pump, starting Jan. 3

LA CROSSE – Kwik Trip is changing how customers pay for fuel, requiring them to either pre-pay or pay at the pump, the company announced Tuesday.

With this change, which goes into effect at all locations Jan. 3, people filling their gas tanks will no longer be able to fill up and then go inside to pay.

The change is being made in an effort to improve customer service, Kwik Trip spokesperson Dave Niemi said.

"When our co-workers spend so much time watching the fuel islands for drive-offs, they can't really focus on guest service in the stores," Niemi said.

Guests will still be able to use cash or checks to pre-pay inside before fueling their vehicle's gas tank, with the ability to get a refund after filling up, Niemi said. Gift cards offer another alternative to debit or credit cards, he said, allowing guests to pay for the exact price of their fuel without a hold placed on their account.

Side diesel fuel islands are excluded from this change and will still have a pay inside option.

Headquartered in La Crosse, Kwik Trip has more than 700 locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, according to its website .

Kwik Trip to switch to prepay-only at gas pumps

The change for all Kwik Trip locations begins Jan. 3, 2022.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) - Beginning next year, Kwik Trip locations will switch to prepay-only at their fuel pumps.

The change for all Kwik Trip locations begins Jan. 3, 2022.

Kwik Trip said in a statement the change is being made to devote more resources to in-store customer experience, since employees are spending time watching the pumps for drive-offs.

In the statement, Kwik Trip said that people can still use cash or checks to pay for fuel inside the store, or they can use debit, credit, or gift cards to pay at the pump.

One exception to the prepay-only change are the diesel fuel pumps, which will still have a pay inside option.

Kwik Trip To Require Pre-Pay, Pay-At-Pump Only Effective January 3rd

All kwik trip fuel pumps will be turned to prepay or pay-at-the-pump only effective jan. 3rd.

Effective January 3, 2022, all Kwik Trip stores’ fuel pumps will be turned to prepay or pay-at-the-pump only, according to a spokesperson for Kwik Trip to DrydenWire.com . The exception is for side-diesel islands, these fueling positions will continue to have the pay-inside option.

“We are moving to prepay to improve our Guest Service,” said the spokesperson, adding “our coworkers spend so much time watching the fuel islands for drive-offs, they can’t focus solely on the guests in the stores. Guests can still use all previously accepted methods of payments - including cash or check - to prepay for fuel inside the store; or use their debit/credit/gift card to pay at the pump.”

Kwik Trip says that their team is “optimistic that this decision will improve our overall experience for the guest.”

On a side, yet similar note, the spokesperson said that “gift cards are a great way to prepay for fuel as they avoid any pre-authorization fees and the guest will be charged for the specific amount pumped right away.”

Looking for ways to save at the pump? Consider a gas rewards program

Gas

DE PERE (NBC 26) — Kwik Trip, Shell, BP, Speedway - it seems like every gas station has its own gas rewards program. That's because they can lead to big savings for consumers - and are even more lucrative for companies.

“You’re more likely to fill up at that gas station, maybe drive past another couple of gas stations and fill up at that one because you get the rewards,” said Moses Alstech, a marketing lecturer at UW-Madison.

  • Are gas-saving myths actually true? Automotive experts weigh in
  • Gas is now $5 a gallon on average, what's to blame?

Additionally, with many different types of gas rewards apps, gas rewards programs are easy to use and in the palm of your hand.

“You can have twenty apps on your phone quite frankly and use whichever one you need," Alstech said.

That's why Alstech says it's not a bad idea to enroll in one or multiple gas rewards programs, especially with today's skyrocketing gas prices. While they may work slightly differently, many rewards programs offer substantial fuel discounts.

For example, with Kwik Rewards , you can earn 5 cents off every gallon of gas for every 15 trips you make to a Kwik Trip. You can also save three cents per gallon every time you use a Kwik Rewards debit or credit card.

Customers can also earn fuel discounts by buying select items each month. Click here to see the fuel discounts for the month of June.

“We have discounts that range anywhere from two cents per gallon up to twenty cents per gallon right now this month," said David Jackson, a digital marketing and loyalty manager for Kwik Trip. "But we’ve seen them reach as far as 50 cents off on certain items as well.”

But it's not just gas stations that see the value of gas rewards programs - more and more grocery stores are beginning to offer them as well. Kwik Trip recently partnered with Festival Foods to offer 1 cent off fuel purchases with every $10 spent at the grocery store. That means with every $100 spent on groceries, shoppers can get 10 cents off per gallon of fuel at their next fill-up.

“We’re seeing discounts right now from our guests coming in with the Festival cards ranging from 30 to 40 to 50 cents off per gallon," Jackson said.

Other rewards programs offer discounts at multiple gas stations, such as the Pay with GasBuddy card that can earn you discounts of up to 25 cents a gallon. You can also earn a guaranteed 20 cents per gallon on up to 50 gallons a month with Pay with GasBuddy Premium.

“We allow savings across many different types of stations with discounts and you can use any of your “gas back” at any station that takes our card,” said GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan.

With such a wide variety of different rewards programs that are available, there are endless ways that customers can save.

“A lot of options out there, a lot of opportunities for people who want to save a little bit of money," Alstech said. "All it takes is just getting a little more organized about it and actually signing up for these programs.”

Kwik Trip fuel payment change now in effect, requiring guests to either pre-pay or pay at the pump

kwik trip gift card at pump

LA CROSSE – A change to Kwik Trip's fuel payment options went into effect Monday — requiring guests to now either pre-pay for their fuel or pay at the pump.

With this change, customers can no longer get gasoline at the pump and then go inside to pay. Kwik Trip announced the change Nov. 30.

The change is in an effort to improve customer service, the company said in a statement. "Our co-workers spend so much time watching the fuel islands for drive-offs, they can’t focus solely on the guests in the stores," the statement said.

Guests can still use cash, check or card to pre-pay for their fuel in the store, or use a credit, debit or gift card to pay at the pump.

The payment changes do not apply to side diesel fuel islands, which still have the option to pay inside after filling up.

Kwik Trip spokesperson Dave Niemi said the company could not offer a statement regarding customer feedback to the fuel payment change at this time, as it is too soon to tell how guests feel about it.

Headquartered in La Crosse, Kwik Trip has more than 700 convenience store locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, according to its website .
