You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Gorilla Permit Rwanda 2024 – Everything You Need To Know

Gorilla Permit Rwanda 2024 – Everything You Need To Know

Philip is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Bradt guidebook to Rwanda.

Rwanda is one of only three countries worldwide where you can see mountain gorillas. This is the world’s largest primate, weighing up to 200kg/441lb, and among the most endangered, with a global population estimated at around 1,060 individuals in 2024.

Rwanda’s gorillas are resident in Volcanoes National Park, a well-organized destination where primate enthusiasts can also hike to the former research station established by the legendary Dian Fossey. Tracking gorillas here is one of Africa’s most exciting wildlife experiences, but before you can do it, you need to buy a gorilla permit. Below we explain exactly what that entails.

216 Rwanda Gorilla Tours

How Much Does a Gorilla Permit Cost?

Mountain gorilla in Volcanoes National Park

As of 2024, the cost of a single gorilla permit (known in full as a mountain gorilla tracking permit) in Rwanda is US$1,500 for visitors from outside Africa. This price is discounted to US$200 for citizens of Rwanda and other East African countries. The permit cost for foreign residents of Rwanda, as well as for citizens and residents of other African countries, is US$500.

For comparison, the cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks is US$800 for foreign nonresidents, US$700 for foreign residents, around US$80 for East African citizens and US$500 for citizens of other African countries. A permit in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) costs US$400. However, the only place you can track mountain gorillas in the DRC is Virunga National Park, which closed to tourism in March 2020. This was initially due to COVID-19, but the park has yet to reopen due to major security issues that seem unlikely to be resolved in the medium term. It is currently possible to track gorillas in DRC’s Kahuzi-Biega National Park, where you’ll visit eastern lowland gorillas as opposed to mountain gorillas, but do bear in mind that the DRC is potentially less secure than Rwanda or Uganda.

At the time of writing, a discount of 30% was offered on gorilla permits during the low season, from November to May. So long as this discount is still offered, it reduces the cost for non-African residents to US$1,050 during these months. However, the discount applies only to visitors who prebook at least two nights in either (or one night in each) of Akagera National Park and/or Nyungwe National Park.

Why Is a Gorilla Permit Required?

Hiking in Volcanoes National Park

A gorilla permit is legally required by all people who want to track gorillas, whether they do so in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park or in a neighboring country. The purpose of this permit system is twofold. Firstly, it allows the park authorities to regulate exactly how many people visit any given gorilla group on any given day. Secondly, the associated fee makes a vital financial contribution to the conservation of gorillas and their habitat, as well as to the well-being of communities living outside the park.

How Do I Get a Rwandan Gorilla Permit?

Mountain gorilla with baby in Volcanoes National Park

Independent travelers who want to book a gorilla permit directly can do so online through the Rwanda Development Board website . If you’re traveling with an operator, however, it is more usual to allow them to make the booking. Permits for any given day are often booked solid well in advance, so it’s a good idea to book yours before you commit to any other travel dates.

How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available in Rwanda?

Mountain gorilla family with silverback in Volcanoes National Park

A total of 96 gorilla permits for Volcanoes National Park are usually available on any given day. This breaks down into eight permits daily for each of the 12 habituated gorilla groups that can be visited. Another eight habituated groups of gorillas are resident in Volcanoes National Park, but they tend to be more difficult to reach and are mostly visited by researchers. Should it happen that one of the gorilla groups designated for visitors crosses into Uganda or the DRC, then one of the groups usually visited by researchers will be allocated for a tourist visit in its place.

What Does the Gorilla Permit Cover?

Guide and traveler entering Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking

Whether you track in Rwanda or elsewhere in the region, the gorilla permit only covers entrance to the relevant national park, the guided trek, and a maximum of one hour with the gorillas. It does not include porter fees, tips to trackers and guides, or any costs relating to accommodations, transport, meals or other activities.

Is There an Age Limit for Gorilla Permits?

Hiking in Volcanoes National Park

By mutual agreement between all three countries where gorilla trekking can be undertaken, a minimum age of 15 years is strictly enforced. No upper age limit is imposed on gorilla trekkers, but it is quite a physically demanding activity, so elderly travelers or those with limited mobility must decide for themselves whether they’re up to it.

Is It Possible To Cancel a Permit?

Mountain gorilla resting in Volcanoes National Park

Should you cancel your trip to Rwanda or fail to turn up on the day, for whatever reason, the cost of your gorilla permit will not be refunded. It is also not permitted to sell or give a permit to somebody else, as your passport details will be checked against the permit before you go gorilla trekking. However, if you book your permit through an operator, then it is usually possible to reschedule to another day with a minimum of 30 days’ notice.

An exception to the above is that people who fail to track due to unexpected movement of their allocated gorilla group will be given the choice of trying again the next day or receiving a full refund. If you track all day and fail to make contact with any gorillas, a 75% refund is due.

Should I Visit More Than One Park in Rwanda?

Chimpanzee sitting in a tree in Nyungwe National Park

Although Rwanda’s top tourist activity is gorilla trekking, there are plenty of other attractions. Nyungwe National Park protects a vast forest where you can track chimpanzees and see a wide variety of other forest-specialized birds and monkeys. By contrast, Akagera National Park is a more conventional safari destination that supports all the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and both African rhino species). It is worth combining a visit to one or both of these parks with gorilla trekking at any time of year. And if you do so over November to May, assuming you spend at least two nights across the other two parks, you’ll be rewarded with a 30% discount on your gorilla permit.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Tour length, departure times, difficulty (1-10), recommended abilities, attractions, special interests, these faqs are specific to this tour. if you would like to view our general faqs click here ..

1. Is this a good tour for kids? Kids love this trip. Peekaboo Canyon is beautiful and FUN to play in. Even in the summer months, it remains relatively cool inside the canyon, compared to the sun exposed desert just outside. The tall canyon walls also contain kids so it’s virtually impossible for them to wander off. The dinosaur tracks captivate the imaginations of kids and grown ups. And be prepared for a brief science lesson or two. If time allows, we may stop by the Coral Pink Sand Dunes for a quick visit, where kids can run up and down the dunes. Be ready for them to come home sandy, happy and tired.

2. Is the Peekaboo Slot Canyon and Dinosaur Tracks tour easy? The hikes at Peekaboo Slot Canyon and the dinosaur tracks site are both easy. It is just a short walk to the dinosaur tracks, where we will be walking up sandstone that is somewhat steep, but we will be moving slowly while we are observing the tracks. For the slot canyon, we drive you right to the entrance. From there, it is a slow, 1-mile round trip meander through a gorgeous, red rock slot canyon. The ground is fairly flat and level, but there is some sand to walk through and loose rocks to negotiate. There are two small obstacles most people can cross without difficulty: One boulder about 3 feet high, and one large log that must be stepped over or ducked under.

3. How does Peekaboo Slot Canyon compare to Antelope Canyon? Both Peekaboo and Antelope are carved from the same Navajo Sandstone formation. Peekaboo is a bit longer than Lower Antelope Canyon. The stone is more red, but it is not carved as intricately as Antelope. Peekaboo is much less crowded, so if offers a true nature experience of quiet and solitude. Tripods are welcome. Read a more detailed comparison of Antelope and Peekaboo in our blog .

4. Is Peekaboo Canyon good for photography? May I bring my tripod? Photographers relish the challenge of the ever changing light in Peekaboo and even amatures with iPhones come away with stunning images. We encourage photography on our trips and our tour allows about 2 hours in the slot canyon if needed. Tripods, GoPros and gimbals are welcome. Photographers are encouraged to linger behind the group to set up their perfect shots. It’s a slot canyon, so you really can’t get lost.

5. What’s the best time of day to shoot images in Peekaboo? Light varies widely depending on the season. In the winter, mid day is good. Look for the 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. tour. In spring and fall, 9 or 10 a.m. or 3 or 4 p.m. are ideal. In the summer when the sun is higher in the sky, early morning is the ticket. Look for 8 or 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. The idea is to capture reflective light that bounces off the canyon walls and creates beautiful orange, red and yellows. In mid day in the summer when the sun is high, there is a big contrast between light and shadow, making photography more challenging. Light beams come and go in an instant in late spring to early fall. We don’t see the in the winter. Photographers might also consider the Sunset Safari tour that includes an afternoon trip to the slot canyon, followed by a drive to a viewpoint to photograph the sunset.

6. Are there bathrooms on this tour? We will drive by a pit toilet on the way to the dinosaur track site. Let your guide know if you need to stop. At any time, you may duck behind a tree or bush for privacy. Bury all solid waste. Guides carry toilet paper, hand wipes and plastic bags in each truck. Do not leave any trash on the ground. Paper must be bagged up and can be discreetly discarded into the trash bag at the truck.

7. Are drones allowed on this tour? Yes, drones are allowed on this tour, but Peekaboo is not necessarily a good place to fly a drone. It is narrow and there may be other people in close proximity. There is space at the dinosaur track site to launch a drone. When operating a drone on tours, please be mindful of other guests on the tour and other hikers who may be in the area. Others seek remote locations for the solitude. Please do not fly drones close to other people and limit the amount of time the drone is in the air. Always follow instructions from your guide.

Guest Experiences on the Slot Canyon / Dinosaur Tracks Tour

Had a fabulous tour to a slot canyon and to see amazing dinosaur tracks in the sandstone. Our guide Andrea was super knowledgeable about the area and the geology. She handled the challenging drive in the deep sand like a boss. She made the tour a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

729LarryS – May 14, 2018 TripAdvisor

I found this company to be very accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly. We had rain forecasted for our tour time so the company called and asked if we could move our tour up a few hours to ensure we’d have good weather for more of our tour. We agreed and took a tour with a great guide. There were a total of 6 of us on the tour. The slot canyon and dinosaur track site were completely empty other than us. Our guide let us stay at each location as long as we wanted. He seemed more concerned with allowing us to stay as long as we wanted rather then ending the tour at any specific time. The ride to some of the sites was a bit bumpy but these sites are not on main roads!

Randy C – April 22, 2019 TripAdvisor

I almost didn’t write this review because I don’t want the word to get out on some of the great locations we went to. But Will and the Dreamland team were great so I promised to give them a shout out. We went during the peak of spring break but the tour was so unique that we were far from any crowds.

tjensen47 – February 12, 2019 TripAdvisor

Andrea was our guide and she was wonderful. We had two young boys with us and she was so patient and understanding with them. We enjoyed every minute of our tour to the Dinosaur Tracks and the Slot Canyon. Such a fun family day!

GenealogyBug – June 23, 2018 TripAdvisor

We toured the Dinosaur Tracks and the Slot Canyon. Andrea moved at our place and interacted well with all members of our party, especially the kids who are 8 and 10. The tour was exquisite and Andrea was absolutely great. Driving through the sandy roads was rough, but that is the nature of the beast. Andrea did a very professional job getting us to and from the destinations. Excellent, A+, Highly Recommended

Slot Canyon Photo

This tour combines our popular Peekaboo Slot Canyon Tour with the Dinosaur Tracksite for a medium tour length.

Fine layers of mud and silt trapped between layers of sand froze Dinosaur Game Trails in time for 180 million years. Dinosaur Tracks as small as a chicken and as large as an elephant connect you with a strange and ancient “Utah”. The Dinosaur Tracks, numbering in the 100’s combined with dazzling slickrock sandstone formations make this place a must see. Between the Slot Canyon and the Tracksite we will play in the gorgeous Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Kids love this tour!
