Central Vietnam Guide

Lang Co Vietnam Travel Guide

lang viet travel

Lang Co was a lovely backwater town nestled at the foot of spectacular Hai Van Pass for some decades. Not yet widely known because of the popularity of beaches in Da Nang and Hoi An, it’s a real hidden gem. Nowadays, more and more tourists come here to relax, enjoy extremely fresh seafoods and discover fascinating nature in its surroundings. There are white sandy beaches stretching for miles that from mountain to mountain, rugged ridges with old forests and clouds around the top, turquoise lagoons dotted with stilt houses, cool streams and trekking trails to the peaks. It’s not difficult to see fishers at work, women opening the oyster shells that their husband farmed or workshops of cajeput oil while touring around. Thus, Lang Co is the land where natural and cultural values are kept well, giving travelers authentic slices of life about Central Vietnamese.

This article provides all travelers need to know about Lang Co (town, fishing village), especially for first timers. In 2009, it’s the 3 rd member of Vietnam in the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World, after Ha Long Bay and Nha Trang Bay. Since then, a festival is held annually to celebrate and promote its beauty and potential to people around the globe. Recently, one of its high-end hotels won the award “Asia’s leading luxury beach resort” from the World Travel Awards.

General View about Lang Co (Town) Vietnam

Lang co vietnam introduction.

Lang Co is a peninsula town (fishing village) in the southernmost of Hue, and by the border between the city with Da Nang. It’s famous for unspoiled lengthy beaches lined by breezy fresh seafood restaurants, and breath-taking surroundings. Travelers can expect a private expanse for surfing, an exciting ride up a spectacular pass to an elevation of 1,500 meters, a turquoise lagoon with an amazing mountain backdrop, cool pristine streams to swim or an island adventure with snorkeling. Jet setters may spend time in golf courses and casinos to have fun if don’t want to go too far. Thanks to not being popular with mass tourism yet, accommodations in Lang Co are a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle that is increasingly hard to find in nearby Da Nang and Hoi An.

Fact: Lang Co means “the stork village” and was first tagged on the map in the French colonial time. Local fishermans believe that it is “tomb of Co (female whale)”, associated with their worship of whales over centuries.

Tourist Areas in Lang Co

Lang Co has four areas where tourists usually choose to stay overnight: Lang Co Town, Canh Duong Beach, New Canh Duong Beach and Laguna Resort Area. While many resorts are based in the first and the last, two others are camping grounds that are popular to local travelers. The town definitely is easiest to get, because it lies along the busiest highway of Vietnam, QL1A. Canh Duong-based facilities are from 5 to 10 km from there.

History of Lang Co Vietnam

Lang Co is a fishing village on a sand dune (peninsula) between a lagoon and the sea. Nobody makes sure that the Chams lived here or not, because of no relics found. So, Vietnamese from the north were the first inhabitants to settle on the land. Earliest migrations might be from 15 th  century after the call of Le Thanh Tong king who aimed for national defence. Since 1306, it’s already been handed down to Viet people (through a wedding). Nowadays, locals earn a living by fishing, farming oysters, raising pearls and tourism. Like many other coastal settlements, a large proportion of the current population follows Christianity which was introduced in 19 th  century by the French. Three churches and a Christian cemetery by the HW1A are proof.

Fact: Khai Dinh, 12nd king of Nguyen Dynasty, loved Lang Co Beach after his visit by mistake in 1916. He requested to build a leisure villa here in 1919 and frequently came with the family. It’s deconstructed in 1947.

Lang Co Weather

Seasons in the year.

Lang Co has two seasons, the dry from January to August, and the wet from September to December. This indicates that the town has a longer dry season and shorter wet season than the whole country. Yearly average temperature is 24 o C and the difference of temperature between the hottest and coldest months is 9 o C. On the other hand, average rainfall for a year is 2,800 to 3,400mm, one of the lowest ranges in Hue. Furthermore, Lang Co is also less affected by typhoons and floods, thanks to shelter of the Hai Van Pass Range.

These are facts about weather and climate in Lang Co:

– Warmest month: July, average maximum temperature is 35 o C

– Coldest month: January, average maximum temperature is 25 o C

– Wettest month: October

– Driest month: March

– Sunniest month: July

Best Time to Visit Lang Co Vietnam

The best time to visit Lang Co in Vietnam is  from April to the end of July . During this period, swimmers and sunbathers can expect clear skies, lots of sun, dry sands, warm and clean water, gentle waves. In addition, the seafood is also freshest, because fisherman boats are easy to set sail and catch in the sea. No surprise that plenty of travelers plan to come here, especially those who want to avoid crowded beaches and high costs in neighboring cities. If just looking for a relaxation-focused trip, Lang Co is one of the greatest localities in Central Vietnam. From September to December, it’s windy and the sea features cloudy and cold water, bigger waves clapping the wet shore. Swimming is not highly recommended, because of safety reasons. Outdoor activities like water sports, snorkeling, trekking, hiking, the Hai Van Pass riding are also not ideal to do.

Lang Co Beach Accommodation

Lang co beach hotels – main areas compared.

Travelers can spend precious off-work holidays in one of Lang Co Beach– or  Canh Duong Beach– based hotels. It’s possible to expect sandy expanses to sunbathe, warm water to swim and lots of sun in both areas. If liking a stay near authentic fisherman villages, famous seafood restaurants and legendary natural beauties, should book a place in the town by Lang Co Beach. However, everything is touristy because of convenience in traffic and shorter distance from Da Nang. More budget accommodations are seen here.

On the other hand, less convenient locations provide such a peaceful environment that is perfect to escape from stressful life. Campers find the best camping grounds and services in Canh Duong Beach. And, jet setters can see what they are looking for in all-inclusive resorts in its west tip. Being a golf player? Booking your own bed there, the 18-hole course is just a few minutes away from it.

How to Get to Lang Co and Get around

From da nang airport.

The best (most popular) way to get from Da Nang Airport to Lang Co, is by taxi or private car. Taxi costs are metered, higher than private cars and travelers have to pay for fees (for example, toll fee). The distance is 30 km minimum, so it starts from 400,000 VND if taking a four-seat car. Price of a private car ranges from 250,000 to 350,000 depending on the provider, and seasons in the year. All drivers choose the Hai Van Tunnel because of shorter distance and safety. If would like to have a ride up the Hai Van Pass (a famous coast road), travelers will pay an extra 20 kilometers. Let him know the request early to avoid missing the chance (road to tunnels and the pass is different!).

From Chan May Cruise Port

Chan May port is one of the main stopovers for cruises in Central Vietnam. It’s located in a deep-water bay of the same name that means “at the foot of clouds”. The distance from it to tourist areas in Lang Co is less than 15 km. To get there, travelers have to book a car or tour in advance, because of no taxi or other vehicles in the harbour (security reasons).

Transport from Lang Co to Hue (& vice versa)

Lang Co is 60 km south of Hue city center and 50 km from Phu Bai International Airport. Car and bus are most convenient to get to it from the north, via the busiest highway QL1A. However, because of the long distance, travelers often book a car transfer, costing from 700,000 VND. If preferring a lower expense, a local bus is the choice. First of all, travelers need to walk to the Highway, across it to get to the opposite side, and hail the bus with signal “Da Nang-Hue”. The fee is about 70,000 VND. Keeping in mind that the bus is available from 7 a.m to 6 p.m only.

Getting around Lang Co

Motorcycles are the best vehicle to get around Lang Co. A day rental may be from 100,000 to 200,000 VND depending on each provider and type. Fuel price and parking fee in the area is low cost, so just wear the helmet and start exploring. These are routes we recommend:

– Riding around Lang Co Lagoon and then up the Hai Van Pass (see travel guide here ), 22 km.

– Riding up to Phuoc Tuong Pass and then along QL49B to view Tam Giang Lagoon (the largest of South-east Asia), including sightseeing Thanh Duyen Pagoda atop a hill, 21 km.

– Riding to Thien Vien Truc Lam Bach Ma Monastery placed amid a blue lake and forested surroundings, including savouring fresh seafood by Tam Giang Lagoon, 28 km.

Beaches in Lang Co Vietnam

The lang co beach.

Stretching 7 kilometers without turns from foot of Hai Van Pass to a cape, Lang Co is the best beach in the south of Hue. It’s known for white expanses not crowded by tourists and warm water with gentle waves nearly all year round. If you love seafood, there are a couple of restaurants on its sands, filled by locals in cooler times of the day. Up the north, surfers can find ideal spots to ride the waves. Beachside accommodations (resorts) here are limited and between the HW1A and the coastline. To seek a sun bed to lounge or a cocktail with breezes around the hair, going there. Swimming is risky from September to December because of extreme weather. Water sports are not yet available, even in the summer months when domestic tourists boom anywhere.

Canh Duong Beach

Canh Duong is a 5km-long crescent beach in the north of Lang Co. Bounded by two capes, it’s cut into 2 by a river originating from peaks of Bach Ma National Park. This stretch of white sand is loved by local swimmers by its clear and clean water, and by campers by the quiet atmosphere at night and fresh seafood. Off the coast, there are many guesthouses to stay overnight if the goers don’t prefer a tent. The west portion is home of prime resorts coupled with a golf course and foreigner-only casino. Water sports are available here.

Beaches in the Foot of Hai Van Pass

Beaches in the foot of Hai Van Pass are small but pretty, tourist-free and accessible by canoe or walking down from the mountain. Bai Chuoi is the largest, famous for a 500m-long stretch of powdery sand by cristall-like water. Being nearer, the Bai Bac (North beach) features a shore mixed between sands and stones. It’s visible from a couch of the train from Hue to Da Nang.

Things to Do in Lang Co Vietnam

Lang co lagoon (aka lap an lagoon).

Between the town and Annamite Range, this turquoise shallow lagoon brings a far-reaching reputation to Lang Co. In 2009, it became a member of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World, the third in Vietnam. At the foot of spectacular Hai Van Pass, it boasts of a set of amazing natural features. That includes calm, lovely brackish water, towering mountains with clouds around the top and pristine green forests below and white sandy strips.

Another interest here is about local farming, with rustic stilt houses of farmers, raising, collecting and preparing oysters. Travelers often ride along roads by its shore, to view the landscape and take pictures. Nguyen Van Rd is the popular stopover to guided tours, because there are café and seafood floating restaurants lining it. From there, it’s easy to see a boat and embark to discover further. The water flows into the sea by an estuary under the bridges leading to the Hai Van Tunnel.

Hai Van Pass is a must see in the region, not only in Lang Co. It’s a 20km-long coast road beginning from the town to an elevation of 1,500 meters, and then down to the shore of Da Nang Bay. At the place where the railway crosses, the first viewpoint is mind-blowing and continuing riding up, travelers can get more picturesque landscapes to photograph. In the summit, there are ancient brick gates built in 19 th century and bunkers. In Da Nang’s slope, panoramic outlooks (rocks) are favourites to instagrammers. See more details in our guide to Hai Van Pass .

Lang Co Surf

Lang Co Beach is ideal for surfing from August to the end of October (the wet season). During that time, the wind direction is from west to southwest, giving consistent clean waves and wind swells are more typical than groundswells. The best spots for surfers are in the north portion of the Beach where the back is free from large tourist constructions. Hiring a surf board in Da Nang or bringing your own because surf rental and school here are unavailable. We recommend reading the guide to Da Nang surfing to know the best providers.

Lang Co’s Springs (Waterfalls)

Mountains in Lang Co are forested, well-protected and much of them are in biodiverse Bach Ma National Park. Thanks to a high rainfall, there are lots of streams formed and their water flows all year round. Because of the long dry season, locals often come there to swim and cool off. The best known place is the Elephant Springs (Suoi Voi), 15 km away from tourist areas of Lang Co. It’s famous for many clear, unpolluted pools by giant rocks, surrounded by lush jungles. Swimmers can choose to hire a thatched roof bamboo hut to put belongings, sit, eat yummy barbecues and drink cold beers. An entrance fee and parking fee will be charged, around 20,000 VND per person. Less popular but still providing the same features, Suoi Mo (the Dream stream) and Suoi Thac Do (the Tumbling stream) are other idyllic spots to go on a hot day. Both are not far from Lang Co fishing town.

Snorkeling in Son Cha Island

Son Cha Island (or Dao Ngoc, Gem Island) is the best snorkeling spot in Lang Co. To get there, travelers need to book a guided day tour departing from the town centre. The canoe conveys passengers to Bai Chuoi (the Banana Beach) at the foot of Hai Van Pass first, for swimming and taking pictures. After that, it’s time to get a mask and discover a fantastic underwater world in the surroundings of the island. Lunch is served with steamed rice and seafood dishes. From September to December, should check the weather forecast carefully, to avoid a rainy or typhoon day. We recommend reading our guides about Da Nang’s snorkeling and Cham Island , to know about other snorkeling spots in the area.

Bach Ma National Park Trekking

Bach Ma National Park is amongst the richest forests of Vietnam, harbouring 2,421 flora species and 1,728 fauna species. It comprises nearly-untouched ecosystems ranging from the plains to elevation of 1,450 meters. Travelers love trekking along trails in this mountain zone, especially to the summit and 300m-tall Do Quyen waterfall. The park is home to 363 bird species, drawing many bird watchers in the seasons. Beginning of the trails is some 20km from the main tourist areas of Lang Co. Travelers can get a taxi and then explore by themselves via the main road, or book an organized trip. See more information in our ultimate guide to Bach Ma National Park .

Lang Co Golf Club

As a part of the Laguna Lang Co, this 18-hole golf course was designed by 1957-borned Nick Faldo (an English professional golfer), his second work in Vietnam. It brings a golfing experience that all levels can enjoy during it. See details in lagunalangco.com.

Laguna Lang Co Casino

This casino is for foreigners only, one of the first legal gambling facilities in Central Vietnam. See details in lagunalangco.com.

The Golden Bridge and Ba Na Hills

These amazing attractions are perfect to spend a day out from the accommodation. It takes around one hour via the tunnel to arrive at Ba Na Hills’s cable car station for boarding for the Golden Bridge. The cable car holds 4 world records. Cool weather, breath-taking scenery, lovely terraced gardens, a huge French town with theme park, alpine coaster, church, restaurants, vibrant outdoor performances on the squares and temples on the summit, are what to expect. Have a ride through striking Hai Van Pass, the day will be more fun.

Travel guides: The Golden Bridge , Ba Na Hills , Hai Van Pass

The Best Restaurant in Lang Co Vietnam

Lang co famous seafood restaurant on the lagoonfront.

Seafood restaurants by Lang Co Lagoon are most popular to tourists, because of the extraordinary view, ample-breezy spaces, and fresh ingredients. Definitely, these are the best options for a meal outside of the hotel. The menu covers both Vietnamese and English there. If the guests would like to select living seafood by themselves from the aquariums, the prices are shown clearly on a nearby board that may rise or fall depending on daily catches. The rate for a kilogram of lobster ranges from 1 to 2,5 million VND, 400,000 to 700,000 VND for prawns, 300,000 to 500,000 VND for fishes, 40,000 to 150,000 VND for clams and mollusks, and smaller than 350,000 VND for crabs, squids, snails, and more.

Now, there are four stilt restaurants above the lagoon: Quan Na, Be Than, Lang Chai Lang Co and Vietpearl. All stand quite close together.

Lang Co Famous Seafood Restaurant on the Beachfront

Restaurants on the sand of Lang Co Beach provide more local feelings than the ones in the lagoon front. Townspeople often come here after the heat is down, to swim in cool water and savour fresh seafood dishes with a cold beer. Prices may be cheaper but the variety of types may not be the same, often covering popular species catched by fishers (neighbours). To get there, travelers need to go to Tram xang Lang Co (petrol station) or Nha tho Loan Ly (church) and then follow the road next to it until the end. Staff and owners there don’t speak English well, so should use the online translation when wanting to say something.

The beachfront venues are better to visit in the summer. In the end of the year, the cold winds may lead to disappearance of swimmers, lack of fresh ingredients, and the seaview blocked. On the other side of the peninsula, windows opening to the mountains and water are off the wind.

What to Buy in Lang Co?

The cajeput oil.

Lang Co, especially villages between Phuoc Tuong and Phu Gia passes, is famous for its industry of making essential oil from cajeput trees. When riding along the HW1A, travelers will see many shops with yellow bottles on either side. The ingredients are leaves and branches only, locally sourced and collected from forests in the sand dunes. All are washed carefully and distilled then by traditional techniques. Thanks to special weather characteristics, the oil content is higher than anywhere else across the country.

Traditional Oyster Sauce (Mam So)

During the seasons, local fishers make Mam So (oyster sauce), besides selling the oysters for restaurants. The meat is mixed with white salts, chilli and lesser galangal, put into a bottle for 8 to 10 days.

Pearls are for sale in tourist shops by the lagoon, introduced to be locally sourced.

What to Do in Lang Son

Though this province is yet to be a hotspot in the tourist map, you should not have a hard time figuring out what to do in Lang Son. This history-rich and culture-filled land can effortlessly leave you amazed and wanting to discover more.

Explore Tam Thanh Pagoda

Tam Thanh Pagoda is a part of the national Nhi – Tam Thanh relic, which includes Tam Thanh Pagoda, To Thi Mountain, and the Mac Citadel.

The front gate of Tam Thanh Pagoda resembles the typical structures of Vietnamese Buddhist pagodas after modern renovations, but don’t be deceived so easily. The deeper you venture into the pagoda, the more you are captivated by the spiritual ambiance. The original structure lies inside an ancient cave with natural stalactites formed in the surroundings. Take your time to pay respect to the local’s sacred haven and learn about the priceless artifacts within the cave.

Not far from the Tam Thanh Cave is the Nhi Thanh Cave where lies a large amount of testimony from Vietnam’s feudal scholars.

Note: Since this is a religious site, don’t wear too flashy or revealing outfits (not sleeveless shirts or shorts), and ask the locals (or look at the locals) to see if it’s possible to take pictures

Conquer To Thi Mountain

The To Thi Mountain, or Vong Phu Mountain (meaning “longing for the return of the husband”) earns its name thanks to the celestial stone statue resembling a woman hugging her child, waiting for her husband to come home. Locals consider this figure to be of Ms. To Thi – a character with great virtues in Vietnamese folklore.

The natural stone formation collapsed in 1991 and was renovated with cement later on to honor the faithfulness virtue of the Vietnamese women.

lang son province vietnam to thi

The tales of the To Thi Mountain remains timeless

Uncover Vietnam History at Ai Chi Lang and the Mac Dynasty’s Citadel

Ai Chi Lang has witnessed many victories throughout Vietnam’s history. Due to the rugged terrain, the land used to be a barricade for Thang Long Imperial Citadel. In the feudal era, Ai Chi Lang contributed a vital part in defending against invaders from the North.

The Mac’s Citadel used to be a military monument built in the sixteenth century. The architectural site is somewhat similar to the Great Wall in China, with stone walls running alongside the cliffs of mountains.

How to visit the Nhi – Tam Thanh relic: all of the attractions of the relic site lie on hills and hidden in rows of tall trees, and the roads are narrow, empty, and can be quite slippery in rainy seasons. It is best to prepare your trekking outfits when visiting the site.

Discover The Life of Ethnic Minorities

Apart from the Kinh people (or Viet), Lang Son is also where the Tay, Nung, and Dao people reside. While transferring from one spot to another, you will encounter ethnic minorities wearing eye-catching brocade clothes. In case you are traveling at the weekend, there is a high chance that you will see their colorful weekend markets where locals trade all sorts of things from necessities to cattle like goats or oxen.

Admire Lang Son from the Phai Ve Flagpole

Though Phai Ve Flagpole was built recently, it is one of the most remarkable sites in Lang Son City. You will need to complete the 500 plus steps to reach the flag pole placed in the mountain peak, and get to rewarded with a panoramic view of the townscape.

Most people would serve the aromatic, super tender, and flavorful Khau Nhuc in big family gatherings or important holidays such as the new year.

General Information

Lang Son Travel Guide

This is a frontier mountainous province in Northeast Vietnam, about 154 kilometers by road and 165 kilometers by railway from Hanoi . Lang Son, a province in Vietnam’s far north, shares a border with Guangxi province in China, making it a strategically important location for the country, not to mention the scenic beauty of the magnificent waterfalls and virgin forests. Furthermore, the land’s history dates back thousands of years, providing you with numerous opportunities to learn about Vietnam’s history and ancient culture.

The Lang Son terrain consists of low mountains and hills that cover more than 80% of the province’s total land area. The average elevation is 252 meters above sea level. In the winter, there is sometimes snow on Mau Son Peak, which is also the highest point in Lang Son. Lang Son is fertile for productive harvests due to the complex network of rivers that run through the province, including the Ky Cung, Ba Thin, Bac Giang, Bac Khe, Thuong, Hoa, and Trung rivers.

Lang Son Weather and Best Time to Visit

Lang Son is a typical tropical monsoon climate pattern in Northern Vietnam. The climate is cool and temperate, with an annual average temperature of 21.5 degrees Celsius. Because Lang Son is in the northeast, the average rainfall is 1200-1600mm. Summer is the warmest month of the year, with July and August being the hottest months. However, due to the cool temperatures and low chance of rain, most tourists prefer to visit in October, followed by January and June.

Lang Son Weather and best time to visit

Lang Son Weather and best time to visit

With the cool temperatures and low chance of rain in Lang Son, there are two peak tourism seasons. The most important season is from May to August when the weather is pleasant and cool. When the rice is harvested, the second peak season in Lang Son begins in mid-November. Come here between late November and February to experience the ice and cold on Mau Son Mountain, which only happens once in a while.

Where to stay in Lang Son

Because it is a developing city, accommodation facilities will be limited. Many new 3-star and 4-star hotels have recently been built in Lang Son Vietnam, making your stay more luxurious. Vinpearl Hotel Lang Son is one of the few high-quality options in Lang Son that is suitable for both business and leisure travelers (Sheraton Lang Son). Homestay is an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers who want to experience the authentic local way of life. Lang Son has a lot of homestays that are reasonably priced. Guesthouses are popular lodging options in rural areas.

What to See in Lang Son

The province should be proud of its diverse cultures and historic relics. Furthermore, nature has bestowed many scenic spots that capture the hearts of thousands of tourists who visit each year.

Chi Lang Pass

This passage documents significant historical events in Vietnam as evidence of the Vietnamese heroic spirit in the face of northern invasions. The Chi Lang District passage is 110 kilometers north of Hanoi, 60 kilometers south of the Chinese border, and 4 kilometers south of Lang Son City.

Chi Lang Pass

Due to the passage’s rugged topography, which is formed by two mountain ranges: the Kai Kinh to the west and the Bao Dai to the east, and is bounded by rocky mountain peaks at both ends of the mountain ranges, those wishing to pass through and access Vietnamese land are at a loss.

Tam Thanh Cave

Tam Thanh cave, Tam Thanh Ward, Lang Son City, Lang Son Province. Many poets have been inspired by this cave, including Ngo Thi Si, a famous Vietnamese poet who carved one of his texts on the grotto wall praising the magnificent natural beauty of the area.

Tam Thanh Cave

The cave is 400m long with entrances on both sides of the mountain. There are various sections on the inside. An opening in the ceiling at the cave’s corner, in particular, is the entrance point for magical lights to pass through and shine on a stage. Visitors can take a walk to nearby Vong Phu mountain (which means ‘waiting for the husband’).

Nhi Thanh Cave

Nhi Thanh is the second largest cave in Lang Son City, measuring 300m in length and having two entrances on both sides of the mountain. The cave is quite large inside, with many corners and stalactites of various shapes. A stream runs through the cave as well.

lang viet travel

Nhi Thanh cave, which was first used for worship in the 18th century, now houses a Buddhist chapel. Inside the cave, the intricate structures create a complex of chapels and oratories dedicated to Buddha and other holy figures.

The Citadel of Mac Dynasty

This is a military structural monument depicting feudal Vietnam. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Mac Kinh Cung built the Mac Dynasty Citadel to fight the Le – Trinh Dynasty. And this was the critical military base for halting the only route connecting the north and south.

The Citadel of Mac Dynasty

The remnants of the Mac Dynasty Citadel today consist of two walls measuring approximately 300 meters in length and 1 meter in width. They are made of large stones and stand between two canyons.

You will see a panoramic view of Lang Son City with lush green rice paddies, rural villages, and many houses next to each other after climbing 100 steep steps from the bottom of the hill to the gate. The Mac Citadel is a must-see attraction in Lang Son, Vietnam.

Mau Son Mountain

Mau Son is naturally featured to be a real paradise in Lang Son with the mild climate and cool temperature (15.60oC) and a great deal of spacious and luxurious villas, which is an attractive factor for a tour to Vietnam. It is located in Loc Binh District, Lang Son Province, and 30km far from Lang Son City to the East at an altitude of 1,541m above sea level.

Mau Son mountain on a snowy day

There, you can see the old French works, which were partially destroyed during the war. These old villas, however, are worth seeing and photographing because of their unique and appealing architecture.

Furthermore, the ethnic minorities who live nearby are all friendly and considerate. The majority of them are Dao and Tay peoples whose livelihoods are based on livestock production and agriculture. Prepare to converse and interact with them along the way. If you are fortunate enough to visit during their festival days, you will be able to participate in a variety of traditional activities such as eating, worship customs, costume wearing, and so on.

There are many well-equipped and reasonably priced motels in Mau Son, with prices ranging from VND 120,000 to 200,000 dong for a double room.

To Thi Mountain

To Thi Mountain is associated with the folklore of To Thi, a local woman. She ascended the mountain, holding her baby, to await her husband’s return from the battlefield. This location has become a place of worship for the locals over the years. In the 16th century, the Mac family fortified To Thi Mountain by erecting a wall around it. You can still climb the rocks and follow the path of the former fortress if you visit the mountain today.

What to Eat in Lang Son

Khau nhuc (Lipu Taro meat)

This food was brought to Lang Son by the Tay and Nung ethnic groups from ancient China. Because this food takes a long time to prepare, it is commonly served on a plate that resembles an upended basket at weddings, funerals, and longevity celebrations of the local ethnic minority tribes. The pork loin strips are woven together and cover a core of steamed taro.

lang viet travel

To make this dish, residents marinate roasted pork loin for 15 minutes with herbs such as cinnamon, anise, pepper, chili, and basil. Two must-have ingredients for this dish are “Mac mat,” a local sweet and aromatic plant, and Tau soi leaves, a pickled herb used by the Tay ethnic groups.

Roast duck is a popular dish in China, particularly in Hong Kong. However, Vietnam has its own roast duck recipe worthy of international recognition. This type of dish is also available in Lang Son and is well worth the attention of international tourists visiting Vietnam.

Roast duck

This dish’s distinct and delectable flavor stems from a perfect mixture of finely chopped onion, garlic, chili, pepper, cardamom, anise, and a local herd known as “moc mat.” To make the food more visually appealing, the duck is dipped in honey-laced water before being roasted over coals for 15 minutes and then deep-fried for another 15 minutes. After cooking, the thin, crispy skin has a fatty feel to it.

Among all Vietnamese traditional cuisines, Pho is without a doubt the most well-known. However, there is a wide range of different types of Pho in Vietnam, one of which is Sour Pho (Pho Chua). This special dish, originally from Lang Son, is the result of the country’s many cultures interacting. This specialty is prepared in an intricate yet intriguing manner. To fully appreciate the flavor and aroma of a bowl of Sour Pho, eat it slowly.

Sour pho

Even though Sour Pho can now be found in many restaurants throughout Northern Vietnam, the most delicious one must be found in That Khe, Lang Son. Sour Pho is most popular in the summer and fall. It is regarded as the pride of the Lang Son people. As a result, when a special guest pays a visit to a Lang Son family, it is always served.

Grilled meatball

This dish may be less popular than others, but it must leave an impression on anyone who tries it for the first time. The meatballs are about the size of a wrist and are wrapped in three layers of green banana leaves for one to two days before being grilled over red, hot coals.

lang viet travel

The food’s ingredients include pork meat, pork skin, and Thinh, a traditional Vietnamese dish. First, clean the pork and cut it into small and long pieces. The pork skin is then boiled and shaved. Following that, pork meat, pork skin, and Thinh are combined and wrapped in banana leaves. The meatballs are finally grilled. The burned leaves are removed before tasting.

Steamed rice rolls

Many Vietnamese people prefer steamed rice rolls for breakfast. When visiting Lang Son, you can not only enjoy the usual rice rolls but also the famous egg rolls. Rice flour is also used to coat this egg roll dish. Instead of meat and mushrooms, the chef cracks an egg in the center of the steamer and covers the pot to cook the egg. Fold the cake and place it on a plate using a bamboo stick. Above the plate of rolls, there is a sprinkling of golden brown minced meat.

Banh cuon trung (steamed rice roll with egg)

Banh cuon trung (steamed rice roll with egg)

The broth served with rice egg rolls is not the typical fish sauce broth. However, it contains a small amount of dry-roasted ground meat, which is sprinkled with chopped cilantro and then poured over the fish sauce with onion fat to taste. Especially for cuisine standards, each restaurant has an extra jar of soaked bamboo shoots with chili on the table for customers to freely add to their bowl of sauce.

If you are a first-time watcher of Khoai Lang Thang, you will definitely be impressed with his bright smile and positive attitude.

In 2017, Chan La Ca (or Hoang Minh Tuan) had a two-month trip in the ocean, visiting various countries. When he returned, he realized he was destined to travel to places instead of sitting in the office, completing tedious tasks. Tuan wants people to know him as a travel storyteller than a travel reviewer.

In Chan La Ca's videos, the footage seems raw and close to real life. Accompanied by his compelling voice, the stories he tells and the trips he experiences greatly resonate with his subscribers. He also invests a lot in recording equipment, so be prepared to step into a cinematic world in each video from Chan.

Travip (Yeu May Bay)

In Vietnam, there is a particular vlogger who focuses on reviewing airlines — Travip or Tran Viet Phuong. Before the pandemic, he would take roughly 120 flights per year to make videos. His Youtube journey initially started with the Youtube Channel “Yeu May Bay,” then slowly developed to other personal channels.

Compared to other influencers and vloggers, Phuong started his career as a reviewer quite late, at age 35. But his background in journalism helped Travip effectively communicate his knowledge to his online viewers. Aside from his airline reviews, Travip also produces content on his experiences in hotels, resorts, or food from foreign countries like India and Indonesia.

Ly Thanh Co

Some people know Ly Thanh Co as a creative director for a popular agency, or a trainer for Marketing students, but most Vietnamese know him as a travel blogger. Starting his journey in 2015, Ly Thanh Co has traveled to 39 countries and territories. He also published three books about his experiences, namely “Thế giới rộng lớn đừng đi một mình" (The world is big so don't go by yourself), “Tuổi trẻ trong ví bạn mua được gì?" (What can you buy with youth?), and “Trăng mật với bản thân" (Honeymoon with yourself).

In Co’s opinion, if we stop experiencing, we get old faster, so he wants to spend his youthful years going to many places, exploring layers of emotions to stay young forever. At present, Cong produces much of his content on TikTok. However, on his Facebook page, you will find more in-depth sharing and tips about every trip he has been on.

Behind the name “Quy Coc Tu" is Ngo Tran Hai An, a young man from Bao Loc, Lam Dong. At the age of 18, he failed his college entrance exam. Too ashamed of his failure, he escaped to a close relative’s house and went to new places where people did not know him. Throughout these getaways, he found his new passions: exploration and photography.

Up to 2010, he had been to almost every province and city in Vietnam. In 2014, he began his career as a photojournalist, which opened doors to even more opportunities for him to visit foreign countries. Most of his videos are only 3-5-minute long but always feature mesmerizing sceneries that immediately make you want to pack your bag and go.

View on map

The Mac Citadel is a military building that was built in the 16th century when Vietnam was ruled by feudal lords. It was used to block the only path from the north to the south. The Mac citadel is now only a 300-meter-long wall of large, mossy stone blocks.

The Mac Citadel is an important historical mark among Lang Son tourist attractions

Standing at the city gate, which has seen the ups and downs of history, visitors can get a great view of the beautiful city of Lang Son. You can admire the mountains, busy streets, open space, and fresh air here as you go from the foothills to the top.

Lang Son Ancient Citadel

The historic Lang Son citadel is in the Chi Lang ward. It is one of the country’s heritage sites. This place used to be the political, economic, and cultural heart of Lang Son’s busy business life.

Lang Son Citadel is one of Lang Son tourist attractions that should be visited

The historic castle of Lang Son was built in the shape of a square with four gates, one for each of the four cardinal directions. This is why it has the name the “Four Cities” castle. Just the west and south gates are still intact. The citadel was constructed of hinged blocks and big stones with intricate carvings. When visiting Lang Son, do not miss this old citadel of Lang Son. You should come here to admire the architecture and learn about a piece of Vietnam’s history.

To Thi Mountain

To Thi Mountain, also known as Vong Phu Mountain, is located in Tam Thanh Commune, Lang Son. This place is associated with a story about a woman named To Thi who carried her child and waited at this mountain for her husband to return from the war. Although she saw no sign that her husband would come back, she kept waiting until one day she and her daughter turned into stone. Today, on the top of To Thi Mountain, there is a natural rock shaped like a woman holding a child, so it is named Vong Phu Mountain (Husband-Waiting Mountain) as a symbol of the faithful hearts of Vietnamese women.

Vong Phu Mountain is a very famous Lang Son tourist attraction

To Thi Mountain, located right next to the Tam Thanh beauty spot, is the most famous Lang Son beauty scene and has inspired many works of art over many centuries. Everyone who comes to Lang Son always wants to take in the scenery here.

Chi Lang Gate

Chi Lang Gate is a typical old Lang Son gate. It is in the Chi Lang commune. Previously, this location was Thang Long’s retaining wall to prevent northern expeditions.

Visiting Chi Lang pass, you will see the heroic history of the nation as if it was alive

Ai Chi Lang is on a grand scale, stretching up to 20 kilometers and connecting Chi Lang and Huu Lung in Lang Son province. Ai Chi Lang is historical proof of many great wars in Vietnam’s history. The west is surrounded by Mount Kai Kinh, and the two ends are both rocky mountains. This made it a dangerous place to be, which helped the Vietnamese beat the Ming army and the Qing invaders.

In addition to historical tourist sites, Lang Son is known for spiritual tourist sites. When traveling to this city, you should not miss the complex of pagodas, which have hard-to-find beauty.

Tam Thanh Cave and Pagoda

The Tam Thanh pagoda complex in Lang Son is a well-known and interesting place to visit. It has a system of three huge caves. Tam Thanh Cave is the largest and most picturesque of them all. Inside the cave, visitors will see layers of stalactites with different and vivid shapes, such as Chinese parasol trees, or Tien Ong, and lofty and airy cave arches.

In the deeper part of Tam Thanh cave, past the stalactite, there is an Am Ty lake where tourists can see the natural beauty of the clean, never-ending lake. Tam Thanh cave also contains a number of other natural wonders, such as the “gate to heaven,” which is beautiful and fantastic.

The Tam Thanh Pagoda is a very sacred place that has a large system of worshiping statues and a lot of rich and valuable epitaphs. The relief of Amitabha in the shape of a bodhi leaf carved into the cliff in the 17th century is the most valuable piece of art here.

In addition to its historical significance, Ta Phu Temple is also a place of cultural and religious activities, with a big festival right in the middle of Ky Lua Market from January 22 to 27 every year. This is Vietnam’s international border gate, located on the Vietnam-China border. This is an important link in Vietnam’s economic development and trade with China, as well as the point where the Nam Ninh-Hanoi highway connects. Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Never forget: Vietnam Traveling Wall in Fort Myers through Sunday

O ne month ahead of Memorial Day, those honoring slain Vietnam War and other U.S. veterans are heading to Lakes Regional Park in Fort Myers.

Through Sunday, the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall and Cost of Freedom display are at the park, 7330 Gladiolus Drive. The wall serves as a tribute, etched with the names of more than 58,000 fallen American heroes.

Bob Sheehan, director of outreach operations for Hope Hospice, helped spearhead the effort to bring the wall to Fort Myers. A Vietnam War-era veteran, he's visited the original in Washington, D.C., many times, he said, taking a minute to gather his thoughts when asked about bringing the replica to Southwest Florida.

"I'm proud of our country; proud of our military," he said, thinking of those who he knew and whose names are on the wall. "All the men and women, the sacrifice. They are the true heroes. Never forget, never forget those who didn’t come home."

The 80% scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., the wall measures nearly 400 feet long. The Cost of Freedom Tribute includes panels honoring American sacrifices in conflicts through the 20th and 21st centuries, including World Wars 1 and 11, the Korean War, 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Sheehan said the wall arrived Wednesday with a full escort of veterans and officers; many of whom stayed to connect the displays.

Hope Healthcare and Chapters Health brought the traveling exhibit to Southwest Florida. The traveling exhibit is to give those who can't travel to the original site, a chance to pay tribute.

Sheehan, a proud military dad to an Army major son, was happy to bring the memorial to Fort Myers. His son, with 20 years in, is based in Washington, and assigned as an air defense officer keeping the capital safe.

"It's touching to me he’s there with the original wall and guarding that area," while the replica is here, he said.

The exhibit is free and open during park hours. For those who visit the exhibit, parking is waived, Sheehan said.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
