Atomic Backland Series: Review and Comparison

  February 15, 2022

By   Marius Bulota

Atomic Backland Series Overview

The Atomic Backland is a lightweight backcountry (touring) series of skis. There are a few sub-categories ranging from super lightweight skimo to super float 117mm underfoot, and a full progression of underfoot width options. Overall, there are 16 models of Atomic Backland that are offered in various lengths .

The first thing I noticed when we measured the Atomic Backland is how light weight they are. Just picking up the skis from the shelf is astonishing. In this series,  Atomic uses constructions that produces very light skis that still offer interesting stiffness levels. Accordingly, the surface - to - weight ratio , which we like to use to describe backcountry skis is one of the highest we have measured so far!  This means that no matter what model or length you choose, they will have an extremely low weight for skis of similar  surface area.

Atomic presents four sub-categories, namely the Unisex (or men), the Women specific, and two very lightweight options under the SL and UL . Our measurements also show that the line-up of Unisex and Women can be broken down into two different orientations based on their shapes. The shift happens around the Backland 100. Anything below a waist width of 100 mm has it's shape adapted to firm snow skiing, while anything above 100 mm is adapted for powde r skiing with features like increased rocker.

The surface-to-weight ratios  across the model we measured are very consistent at about 1,3 cm²/g in the 180cm lengths, except for the Backland 100 that has an impressive surface-to-weight ratio of 1,44 cm²/g . This means that even if the Backland 100 is larger and has more surface area compared to the Backland 95, but is also lighter! It is a bit of an outlier in this series, so be aware that they will provide different on-snow feels.

As for many light skis, their bending and torsional stiffness levels are lower than other similarly shaped skis. However, we found that for their surface-to-weight ratio, the bending stiffness levels are typically medium-high and the torsional stiffness levels are typically high.

Looking at the Women specific skis, our measurements of the Backland 100 and the Backland 98 W in 164cm show that that are both practically identical for every aspec t we consider (see detailed comparison here ) .  They have the same shapes, same weight, same bending stiffness and same torsional stiffness.

What are the Atomic Backland options available?

According to Atomic catalog, there are 16 models of Backland skis in 21/22 and those come in different lengths. At the time of writing, we had 35 Backland skis measured and available for you to compare in our online  Ski Comparator . Of those, 15 are from season 21/22. The table below summarizes the options available in 21/22 catalog.

Comparing The Atomic Backland Popular Options

Our comment and observations below are based on the 35 Backland skis we have measured. We picked four models of interest (Backland 86 SL, Backland 95, Backland 100 and Backland 107) and compared them for similar lengths. We use lengths around 180 cm in this case. This is important as many properties change with ski length. Our detailed measurement are available here .  You can use our database to compare other lengths and models.

Backland 86  SL

m tour 87

The Atomic Backland 86 SL is not a skimo, but at 1300 grams, it can definitely be considered Super Light! The rockers and tapers are shorter, which will provide more support and stability on hard surface. It also provides more bending stiffness, which is interesting for skiing faster on harder snow.

If you want a ski mainly for touring and would use it very occasionally on the resort, this might be an interesting option. However, the other way around may not be the best option. There are better resort oriented options that would also do well occasionally backcountry skiing.

Backland 95

m tour 87

Like the 86 SL, the Backland 95 also has a subtle rockers and a long sidecut length, for more stability on hard surfaces. With 95 mm waist, it can float but is also narrow enough to handle harder surface. The radius is slightly shorter, so more reactive. It would be the right choice for the skiers who would prefer a one-ski quiver for up-hilling, and go touring no matter the snow conditions (crust, hard packed, powder...).

Be aware that even if it's close to the Backland 100 in waist width, it is a different beast.

Backland 100

m tour 87

The Backland 100 is considerably different when compared to the Backland 95, despite only a 5 mm waist width increase. Its design show many powder oriented features like longer rockers and tapers. This makes this skis more playful and easier to pivot in soft snow and uneven terrain (soft bumps). It would not perform has well on hard surfaces. The choice between the 95 and the 100 really depends on the main conditions you anticipate to ski the most. If you go touring no matter the the snow condition, the 95 would be better. If you go touring when the snow is soft and deep, the 100 is a better option.

Backland 107

m tour 87

The Backland 107  is clearly powder oriented with a bit more of a freeride flavour. It has the highest rockers and tapers. It is also 300 grams heavier than the 100. With this extra weight also comes about 20% more torsional stiffness, which would be useful for charging even when the snow is not super fluffy. This options may be more interesting for skiers that want more float and more responsiveness, due to the extra torsional stiffness.

The Atomic Backland evolution in time

Comparing the backland 100 and 102 from 2019 to 2022.

Yes, there has been a few changes over the years. See our detailed comparison between the 19/20 Backland 102 and the 20/21 and 21/22 Backland 100, in 172 cm. The main differences observed are:

  • The weight was significantly reduced over the years, by as much as 12% to 14% per year ! This is quite an engineering achievement, considering that during this same period, the bending stiffness level increased a bit and the torsional stiffness increased significantly !
  • Accordingly, the surface-to-weight ratio went from 1,17cm²/g in 19/20, to 1,3cm²/g in 20/21 and now 1,49cm²/g in 21/22 for those specific skis.
  • The radius stays between 17m to 18m for this specific length.
  • The running length is about the same for all three skis.
  • The tail height has decreased significantly from the 19/20 version.

COMPARE ALPINE SKIS

What skis are similar to the backland series.

There are similar options to the Atomic Backland series. However, you will notice from the comparisons below that similar waist width along with similar surface to weight does not mean that they will ski the same. Lets have a look at a few models form other brands such as DPS, Blizzard, Dynafit, Dynastar, Fischer, K2, Line, Rossignol and Völkl. The table below is a comparisons summary we have made.

Atomic Backland review conclusions

The Atomic Backland has some impressive specifications as a backcountry (touring) ski. It clearly scores well on the surface to weight ratio, no matter which size. Up to a waist width of 95, it is targeted for firm snow. Above that, the shape is different and clearly targets more playful feelings in soft snow. There are no significant differences between the Women and the Unisex models. There are many other light skis out there, but the Backland remains a light ski with above average levels of bending and torsional stiffness. Over the past years, while the weight has been decreasing, Atomic maintained or increased the stiffness levels.

Making the Best Ski Gear Choices

2023 Dynastar Skis: Catalog Overview

Last Updated: June 14, 2022 by Fraser

2023 Dynastar Skis

The 2023 Dynastar skis lineup features many new additions to an already great lineup, while also making changes to existing skis. Check out what’s new, what’s gone and what’s changed down below.

With over 50 years of experience Dynastar has at it roots never changed. They continue to make over 60% of their equipment in the French Alps, more specifically in the valley of Mont-Blanc. Dynastar’s athletes also play a large role in the creation/change of every ski. From on snow tests to designing the product, they play a part in all of it

Technology wise Dynastar pushes what is possible as much as any other brand. From the lightweight paulownia wood used to the basalt fibre and so much more. Its obvious how much thought and effort goes into every step of  building each ski.

Summary Of New Skis for 2023

The new skis for 2022-23 are:

+ E Lite 8  – The newest addition to the E lite lineup. The E lite 8 shares the same sidecut as the E lite 7 as well as 3 size lengths 149,158, and 166. Technology-wise it shares the same tech as both the E lite 9 and E lite 7

+ E-Pro 85 – A new size for the E-Pro lineup this 85mm waist width is the smallest of the 3 but it does have some things, like directional rocker, that the 90 and 99 don’t have. The E-Pro 85 also features a different binding as well. That being the Xpress W 11 GW. The 3 size lengths available are 149,158, and 167

+ E Free 90 – Another edition to Dynastar’s women’s freeride lineup is the E-Free 90. Compared to the 3 E-Pro skis, the E-Free 90 has a Paulownia core instead of the hybrid core as well as Progressive Rocker and adaptive sidecut. The E-Free 90 comes in 4 size options 137,147,157, and 167

+ M-Pro 108 TI F-Team – Replacing the M-Pro Rider, the new M-Pro 108 TI it features 3 sizes – 172,182 and 192. Compared to the one size the M-Pro rider had (192).  Overall the M-Pro 108 TI is bigger as well, featuring a larger waist width by 5mm and sidecut that’s 7mm bigger in the nose and tail. Finally the core is completely redone. The new one has all the latest technology Dynastar has to offer

+ M-Pro 85 – Rounding off the M-Pro line is the M-Pro 85. It is the smallest waist width of the 4 skis but that also makes it the lightest of them. It weighs 200grams less per size then the E-Pro 90. On top of that, the 85 has directional rocker and adaptive sidecut which the 90 and 99 M-Pro do not. The M-Pro 85 offers 4 size lengths – 158,167,176 and 185

+ M-Vertical 88 F-Team – Essentially just the team version of the M-Vertical 88, the F-Team comes in a different graphic and has one less size option. The 180cm size has been removed, so the 3 sizes available are 156,164, and 172

+ M-Tour 90 – The replacement for the M-Tour 87, the M-Tour 90 features 4 sizes 157,167,177,and 185, compared to the 87’s 171 and 179.  Technology-wise the M-Tour 90 gets all of it – the hybrid core, adaptive sidecut and directional rocker.

+ E-Tour 90 – Dynastar’s largest of it’s 3 new women’s touring skis, the E-Tour 90 features 3 size options – 157,167, and 177. It also has all the latest technology like hybrid core, directional rocker and adaptive sidecut.

+ E-Tour 86 – Like the E-Tour 90, the 86 has paulownia core, fiberglass torsion box but doesn’t have the adaptive sidecut, directional rocker or hybrid core. The E-Tour 86 has 3 size choices – 152,160, and 167

+ E-Tour 82 – Finally the smallest of the 3 new E-Tour skis, the 82 comes in 3 sizes – 154,162, and 170. It’s also the heaviest of them as well, weighing about 600grams more per size compared to the 90 and 86 E-Tour.  Tech-wise its similar to the E-Tour 90 with the one difference being the titanal rocket frame.

Dynastar believes in tradition and sticking to what works. It shows throughout their lineup every year and this year is no exception.

No other ski company is doing what Dynastar is when it comes to production. Having the freedom of being there every step of the way when creating skis is a important thing.

Being able to create something in house and immediately test it in real conditions is a major advantage in some aspects and it shows in all of their skis. Whether its a men’s freeride ski or a women’s piste ski, Dynastar puts the same effort into everything.

Description

  • Touring skis M-Tour 87 CA

The M-Tour 87 CA has the same shape that made the former Mythic 87 Pro so successful, with a more modern construction that offers great performance both on ascents and descents. It features a hybrid wood and polyurethane shell combined with basalt and carbon fibres. The combination offers an excellent power-to-weight ratio, making it possible to have a ski that weighs only 1,200 grams (per slat, in size 171 cm) whilst retaining character.

What is the programme of the Dynastar M-Tour 87 CA ski?

As light as it is, the M-Tour allows you to swallow the D+ without any problem, even in soft snow or snowy terrains thanks to its large spatula. The M-Tour offers a smooth and stable ride during descents. Its 87 mm waist width and large front spatula make it easy to float, which is excellent for taking advantage of the great off-piste conditions. On hard snow, the grip is good but is not suitable for engagement on terrains that combines steep slopes and hard snow. The torsional stiffness is satisfactory, but it is really the size and rocker of the front spatula that doesn't allow the ski to have the grip necessary for more committed terrains. The trade-off for having a ski that is both light and works well in the cooler conditions.

Who is the Dynastar M-Tour 87 CA ski for?

We recommend this model to intermediate/confirmed to very experienced skiers who already have a little experience in touring and who are looking for a ski suitable for ascents and descents under good snow conditions without exhaustion.

What are the main qualities of the Dynastar M-Tour 87 CA ski?

Tips and advice

How to choose the length of your skis.

What kind of skis should I buy ?

Your options:

1. The advanced search engine: You'll find it everywhere on our website, as a sidebar on our listing pages. It allows you to select conditions and refine your selection: brand, level, style, etc. When you select them, only the relevant products will show.

2. You can contact us on the  020 3129 3301 : skis feature fine technologies and affect your safety. It is important to make sure that the skis you've selected will suit you. Call our landline and get in touch with our team for any questions regarding these products.

Do you fit the bindings on skis?

Are the skis ready to use.

All skis you purchase on our website are factory-waxed and tuned. This means they are ready to hit the slopes. However, gear tends to wear and in order to keep it in its best shape, you need to maintain base and edges on a regular basis.

Maintaining your skis is essential for a smooth glide and a solit grip. Frequency of maintenance may vary depending on how often you use your skis, or on how damaged they are. We recommend you to wax them every 10 riding days and at the end of the season. Edges need to be tuned up to 2 times per season if you want to keep a good edge control. However, don't overdo it. Tuning is basically scraping off material. If you do it too often, the edges will vanish after some time.

When your base is damaged and shows shallow scratches or rock gouge, it is possible to repair it.

You can get these repairs done by professional ski shop, or if the gouge is only superficial you may repair it yourself. To do so, you will need special tools and materials such as wax, Ptex for repairing bases, edge sharpeners , etc. You can find them on our website.

Is the equipment under guarantee?

All products benefit from a manufacturer guarantee, as long as the damage is caused by a manufacturing defect (may it be hidden or obvious).

Usually, the manufacturer guarantee lasts two years.

Only the manufacturer is able to decide if there has been a 'manufacturing defect' or a 'misuse'. Glisshop is only an intermediary between you and the manufacturer.

The manufacturer's guarantee will not apply if the problem comes from a misuse.

Avis fabricant.

Skeptics everywhere gasped when DPS released their original Cassiar 87, designed for hard snow and long-distance touring. What does DPS -- a company that made a name for itself with banana-rockered, water-ski-esque powder boards -- know about edge hold and camber underfoot? Well, it turns out that just because DPS tests their skis in the Wasatch doesn't mean that their mid-fat designs don't have a special affinity for shredding the maritime snowpacks. Whether you're hunting for a late-season freeze up high on the Olympic Peninsula, or making perfect carves under the midnight sun of the Lyngen Alps, the Pagoda 87 takes versatility to the next level. Aerospace foam in the core provides damping for the Pagoda above and beyond what we saw in the Cassiar, obliterating any concerns about pingy, chattery sensations when you ski onto shaded aspects or traverse a wind-scoured patch. And for those sleeper late-season storm cycles, the rockered tip and rounded tail make for effortless turns in boot-top powder. A heads-up to the skeptics: DPS has found the formula to shed weight without losing the amazing downhill feel that has been winning them converts worldwide.

  • A mid-fat ski that rides like an excess-fat powder board, but without sacrificing edge hold.
  • Aerospace-grade foam core provides impressive damping for the hard-charging, conditions-be-damned skier.
  • Rocker-camber integration makes for easy turn engagement, even on tired legs and with lighter boots.
  • Textured polyamide topsheet keeps snow and ice off your ski when you're setting the skintrack.
  • World Cup race-grade base material keeps your Pagodas moving fast and pairs well with DPS's Phantom 2.0 treatment.

Kid Cudi Cancels Tour After Breaking His Foot at Coachella: 'Much More Serious Than I Thought'

"I'm really disappointed as I'm sure you guys are too, but I will be back," the rapper wrote in his announcement

Kid Cudi has been forced to cancel his upcoming tour following his fall at Coachella .

Cudi, 40, was set to tour across the country in the summer to support his ninth studio album, Insano , released in January.

The rapper announced in a post on X , formerly Twitter, and Instagram on Wednesday, April 24, that he will have to undergo surgery after breaking his calcaneus (heel bone) during his Weekend Two performance.

"I'm headed to surgery now and there's gonna be a long recovery time. We have to cancel the tour so I can focus on getting better to be out there in top shape to rage with you all," Cudi wrote.

On Sunday, April 21, fan-captured footage began to surface showing the musician rolling his ankle while stepping down the steps of the Sahara tent stage. After having to cut his set short, he confirmed that he had broken his foot in a post on X.

He expressed in his latest update that "there's just no way I can bounce back in time to give 100%" as the injury "is much more serious than I thought."

"Anyone who bought tickets will get a full refund, you'll get an email soon. We will be back with new tour dates as soon as possible, and I can't wait to get back out here with you guys and turn up how we do," continued Cudi.

The performer ended his post by thanking all his fans for the "endless love and support."

"I'm really disappointed as I'm sure you guys are too, but I will be back. That's a promise 😉💞🫶🏾. I'm ok, just a lil soreness, but I'm in good spirits 😊"

Mají standardní tvar, žádné výrazné vykrojení, a tedy i celkově větší plochu.

Masters champ Scottie Scheffler posts a 63 and leads the RBC Heritage by 1 shot

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Scottie Scheffler drilled his opening tee shot — straight down the middle, of course — with a grandstand packed with spectators behind him. What got his attention was when he looked back from the green and saw that it was empty.

Thousands of fans didn’t want to miss the Masters champion on Saturday in the RBC Heritage, and Scheffler didn’t disappoint.

His shots were like lasers into the greens as he quickly worked his way into the lead and stayed there. One last birdie on the 18th hole at Harbour Town gave Scheffler a bogey-free 63 and a one-shot lead over Sepp Straka.

“It felt to me like the crowd was coming with me today, and there was definitely a lot of cheers out there,” Scheffler said. “I’ve always enjoyed playing in front of a crowd. It may not look like I’m paying much attention to them out there, but I can feel their energy, and it’s great to have the support.”

He won a green jacket last week, perhaps a plaid jacket from Harbour Town this week. Scheffler wasn’t kidding when he talked about how much he hates to lose.

At stake Sunday is a fourth win in his last five starts, and a chance to become the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the Masters and the next PGA Tour stop on the schedule. The only other Masters champion to do that was Gary Player in 1978.

“I think when I’m playing my best, sometimes it feels like I’m competing against myself a little bit out there, trying to keep pushing and stay as focused as I can,” Scheffler said.

“At the end of the day, we’re out here competing against the best players in the world. I love competing against these guys, and I’m looking forward to the challenge of coming out and competing tomorrow.”

Scheffler was at 16-under 197. Straka made a 15-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 65 to get within one shot. They will be in the final group Sunday, with a different wind and thunderstorms in the forecast.

Two-time major Collin Morikawa made one mistake late, coming up short of the 16th green and missing a 10-foot par putt. He had a 68 and was two shots behind. Masters runner-up Ludvig Aberg (68) was among those three shots back.

All of them are chasing the No. 1 player in the world in the midst of a dominant stretch of golf not seen since Tiger Woods in his prime.

Scheffler has gone 51 consecutive holes at par or better at Harbour Town. He posted his 39th consecutive round at par or better dating to the Tour Championship last August.

“I think we all expect him to play well, and there’s nothing I can do about it,” Aberg said. “All I try to do is focus on myself and make sure that I hit the shots the way I want to and then see where that takes me.”

Scheffler started three shots behind and already was tied for the lead with a tee shot to a pin at the back right corner of the 221-yard seventh hole, converting a 10-foot birdie.

Even the bad breaks led to birdies. On the reachable par-4 ninth, his drive stopped short of the bunker on a down slope of grass, leaving him a flop shot to a short pin with the green running away from him. All he could manage was a pitch to 35 feet. He rammed home the birdie putt , and never really stopped until finishing with a 7-foot birdie on the 18th.

For a moment, it was setting up as a duel with Aberg, the Swedish stud who has been a pro for 10 months and already is regarded as Scheffler’s biggest threat because he never seems to miss. But he missed a drive on the 12th into the trees and made bogey to fall out of a share of the lead, and Aberg had to settle for pars the rest of the way.

The crowds were particularly large in the warm and sunshine, often lining the entire fairway two- and three-deep to watch golf’s newest sensation. Scheffler has three wins and a runner-up finish in his last four tournaments.

The only player to beat him was Stephan Jaeger by one shot in the Houston Open — Scheffler missed a 5-foot putt that would have forced a playoff. They played together for the first time since then and Jaeger held his own with a 67.

Against Scheffler these days, that’s just not enough.

Scheffler wasn’t entirely prepared for this week. Winning can be draining, even more when it involves a Masters green jacket. He flew home to Dallas on Sunday night, spent two days with his pregnant wife, managed nine holes of a pro-am at Harbour Town and here he is again.

Patrick Rodgers is the only player within five shots of Scheffler who has yet to win on the PGA Tour. The former Stanford star has felt his game was in a good place and he was hopeful of getting another chance. And then he saw Scheffler’s name starting to rise on the scoreboards as he was starting his round. Rodgers hung in there with a 68.

“It feels inevitable at this point,” Rodgers said. “His ball-striking is incredible. For me to have a chance tomorrow, I’m going to have to play 18 great holes. And I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
