This year my vacation I had decided to spend in Indian Himalayas. Looking for the local travel agency, I found Maharaj Tours. And that was the best choice indeed. First we started from the trekking: Mt. Stok Kangri 6153, and then moved to reach our final goal: Mt. Nun 7135 Amazing time with the best service I could imagine. Owing to our team, careful aclimatization and good weather of course, we were lucky to climb both of mentioned summits.

Hello, my husband and I were in India in March 2019. We asked Maharaj Tours for personal trip on the south India. We walked Bangalore-Mysore-Hassan-Hampi-Badami-Hubli and Goa. Everything was perfect. Agency care about us like queen and king. We are from Slovakia and don´t speak english. Some situations were funny. Their service was brilliant. Our driver, hotels, guides, food... perfect! People are very kindly, helpful. We hope, we will back for years and again with Maharaj Tours. Recomend

The traffic in India has to be witnessed to be believed! All traffic, most of the time requires experience ++ to negotiate. You will really need an Indian driver who has the patience and expertise to get you there safely. Our driver picked us up from our accommodation and took us to Agra for Taj Mahal visit and several times to Delhi airport and back for domestic travel. All drivers from Maharaj Tours courteous, good English and generally lovely people. Would definitely use Maharaj Tours again.

How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

maharaj tours & travels

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

' src=

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!

Luxury rvs are changing the travel landscape.

Luxury RVs have come a long way since the early 1900s and some now have built-in garages

RVs have come a long way since they first emerged in the early 1900s and while many more people are increasingly choosing RVs to travel, it is the luxury RV landscape that is changing the travel market—now travelers can escape to the most deserted place on the planet (if accessible by road) with everything they need, from a rooftop disco to a concierge service.

What Is The History Of The RV?

The history of the RV is as old as the car, inspired possibly by the idea of the Roma caravans that traveled Europe in the 1800s. Although camping became more common from the mid 1800s onwards, it was the birth of the car that encouraged more campers and the first RV was tacked onto a car in 1904—it could sleep four adults on bunks and had lighting, an icebox and a radio.

Car owners continued to add on larger and larger contraptions, but it wasn't until 1910 that the first commercial RV, Pierce-Arrow's Touring Landau, appeared at Madison Square Garden—fitted with a chamber pot toilet, a foldable back seat that turned into a bed and a telephone to connect the driver with the passengers.

From then on, auto campers, as they were called , were rolling off several company's production lines and by the roaring twenties they were quite big—think REO’s 'Speed wagon bungalow' and Hudson-Essex’s 'Pullman Coach.'

It's a trend that grew as people began visiting National Parks more and many of the leading entrepreneurs rolling out RVs were keen users themselves—think Henry Ford and Wally Byam, the founder of Airstream, whose brand became ubiquitous in the RV world in the 1990s/2000s.

Arrowhead tells helldivers 2 players to change reviews to negative over psn linking, imessage s lock on america is this really the beginning of the end.

A Pierce-Arrow motor home in October 1926.

After the Great Depression and the lean years after World War II, many RVs were used as inexpensive homes and/or cheap ways to travel. With the launch of the Winnebago in 1967 and increasing stretches of interstate highways, RVs gained a mass-market appeal.

Can RVs Be Luxury?

RVs had a similar trajectory to houses and have always followed modern technology—as something new came on the market, it was always added to a new make or model of an RV, whether that was a fridge, an oven, a microwave, garbage disposal, washers, dryers, showers or a satellite dish.

It makes sense because the reason people use RVs is because they want to travel but taking all the modern conveniences they have at home; as houses became more luxurious, so did RVs.

How Is Luxury RV Travel Different From Typical RV Travel?

One of the main differences in how luxury RVs differ from normal RV travel is in how luxury RVs are built and how they allow their residents to move around, without struggling for space. Imagine state-of-the-art technology and devices, well-designed floor plans (meaning everyone feels like they have enough space) and a sleeping area that is well-removed from other parts of the RV.

It's all about how someone feels inside too—meaning passive underfloor heating, lots of hot water, large refrigerators, walk-in showers, and handcrafted solid countertops.

Luxury RVs traditionally think about how its owners interact with the outdoors they are seeking to experience, so there's likely large panoramic windows that let travelers feel closer to nature. They might also allow off-grid living and merge sustainable-living features like off-grid energy production, LED lights, fresh water treatment, and indoor air quality purifiers. It's common for luxury RVs to come with solar panels on the roof.

Mobile connectivity is of the utmost importance too—luxury RVs will always be connected to the internet in any location, unless they choose not to be, with wifi boosters to use around the outside of the RV too. Some luxury RV owners might also pay for a monthly subscription for a concierge service to help out when travel plans go awry.

What Does Luxury RV Travel Look Like?

Luxury RV travel is elegant, having everything to hand that one could want, including the ability to be able to block out everything that a traveler might not want—people, noise, light, and crowds.

Luxury RVs come with a price tag though—ranging from anywhere from $40,000 to $1 million, depending on your view of luxury—although some luxury RVs can cost much, much more. The two-storey, 732 square-feet EleMMent Palazzo Superior, for instance, is one of the most luxurious RVs available. It has adjustable sun protection that darkens the glass as necessary and a 68-foot, automated rooftop Sky Lounge with a sound system to match any night club. Only a handful exist and no one knows the exact cost, but it is estimated to be around €3 million.

Other very luxury RVs may be a little more reasonable. The $2.5 million Featherlite Vantare Platinum Plus has an in-built treadmill and gym and the $1.6 million Newell Coach p50 has a Porsche-designed interior.

What Are Luxury RV Destinations?

In the early 1900s, drivers would take their RVs to places that had everything typically associated with a holiday—a golf course, restaurants, the sea. Since the pandemic, many RV travelers now choose to spend time in places that are far from crowds, cities and amenities and clearly, luxury RV travelers have the large kitchens required to cook in and entertain.

The bigger the RV, though, the harder it might be to find somewhere to park it overnight or over several days. Lonely Planet has a list of wonderful national parks for RVs across the U.S., chosen for the quantity and quality of RV campsites within the parks but also because they offer RVs a lot of access to tour the parks on large, paved roads and where it's easy to see the park attractions from the roadside.

How Many People Participate In RV Luxury Travel?

Since the pandemic and the rise of remote working, normal RV use has exploded as it allows digital nomads to travel for bleisure. During the pandemic, there was a 16% increase in RVs shipped out to new owners across the U.S. and it's believed that 11 million households have a normal RV in the U.S.

Since Covid, luxury RV sales have also increased by a staggering 143%, as travelers effectively paid to distance themselves from large resorts and crowds of people.

Is The Number Of Luxury RV Travelers Expected To Increase?

The number of people using RVs is increasing generally across the market. According to the RV Industry Association, RV ownership has been increasing steadily for the past decade with 18-to-34-year-olds making up 22% of the market. In 2022, the median age of a first time RV buyer was 32, down from 41 just a few years earlier—a trend driven by an increase in remote working. The RV market has also been driven by babyboomers entering retirement and wanting to travel in an RV. Both of these trends suggest that the RV market is likely to increase, plus there are more places welcoming RVs now, across the U.S.

It also fits with Pinterest's Summer 2024 Travel report where amongst a staggering one billion travel-related searches and over 10 billion travel saves between February 2023 and February 2024, the site saw searches for a 'quiet life' increasing by 530% over the same time period, underpinning a need for simplicity and calm, two other popular and increasing search terms on Pinterest.

europe shoulder season travel

Come summer, travel to Europe will be top of mind for plenty of Americans with vacation on the brain.

But can we afford it? Summers especially can be crowded, hot and packed with tourists driving up rates as locals flee for the countryside and beaches — not really the best time to be visiting.

Plus, this year, there’s an extra level of expense added, with the 2024 Olympics taking Paris for the months of July and August.

A tower in the city

And that won’t just impact Paris, but all the destinations like the French wine regions, the Cote d’Azur and even London and Brussels and Amsterdam — all easily accessible by rail and likely to receive plenty of extra visitors.

So you might still be going — but you might be going before or after the summer, this time around. And according to a new study , that’s totally fine.

For example, did you know that Paris can be a pretty good deal, as long as you’re not insisting on the peak travel periods?

The number crunchers at Radical Storage urge travelers not looking to go into heavy debt to select the shoulder season, when visitors can save a whopping average of 60.3% on their hotel stays, one of biggest budget busters on a Paris itinerary, where peak season nightly rates averaged $866.

Wait until shoulder season and see those same rates plummet to $344, the research revealed. That’s a discount of $522.

Shoulder seasons can vary by destination, but are by definition the times between peak and off-peak. And, most importantly, unlike during low season, the weather isn’t terrible. (If you’ve spent a winter in Paris, you know that’s an issue.)

A bridge over water with a building in the background in Budapest

“Shoulder season is the period before or after peak season but not yet the off-season. For example, many European destinations have a very busy summer (July/August) but May, June, September, and October may be considered shoulder season (it varies per destination), while January could be considered the off-season or low season,” the study stated.

“Visiting destinations in shoulder season usually means lower costs and lower crowds, while still keeping good enough weather for tourism.”

To find the best times to travel to Europe, the study pored over data from Google Flights and prices for thousands of hotels. Besides beaucoup bargain boltholes in Paris, they also found that flights to Budapest in the off-season sank to 56.6% of peak season highs, Thrillist reported .

And while Budapest had the best drop in prices, it was far from the best deal, overall — peak pricing for cities like Stockholm from the States averaged about $778, according to the study, and $537 during shoulder season — a drop of 30.9 percent.

As part of the study’s findings, the authors compiled a list of the best shoulder season month to visit a selection of cities around the world. Here are their picks for many of Europe’s most popular destinations.

I Saw Almost All 18 New Spring Shows on Broadway — Here Are the Best Ones to See

New York–based theater critic Barbara Schuler on the best new shows on Broadway right now.

Marc J. Franklin/Courtesy of Hell's Kitchen

Oh, the pressure. When you write about theater, it’s hard to get away from people (friends, family, minor acquaintances) inquiring about the best show to see on Broadway . Understandable, what with tickets so expensive and especially this spring, with 18 new shows opening in March and April alone.

Of course, my opinion (like everyone else’s) is completely subjective. But after seeing most of the new productions that have opened in the past few months, here are the ones I’m encouraging people to see — diplomatically listed in alphabetic order.

Emilio Madrid/Courtesy of Enemy of the People

"An Enemy of the People"

Circle in the Square, 235 W. 50th St.; anenemyofthepeopleplay.com

I always get chills when a play written more than 100 years ago is so frighteningly relevant. Ibsen’s 1882 drama about a local doctor who fights to inform the public about pollution in the public baths clearly speaks to our current concerns about climate change. The air of tension persists throughout, to the point that when actual climate protestors interrupted an early preview, many people thought it was part of the production. Of course, some  audience members just come to see two big names from television — Jeremy Strong of Succession as the beleaguered doctor, and Michael Imperioli ( The Sopranos , The White Lotus ) as his slimy brother, the town mayor.

"Cabaret"

August Wilson Theatre, 245 W. 52nd St.; kitkat.club

The show starts a full 75 minutes early at this production, with audiences invited to come early and have a drink or two — even dinner if you pay enough for your tickets — in the renovated theater, rebranded the Kit Kat Club. A cast of prologue performers wanders the three levels of the club, so by the time Eddie Redmayne as the emcee takes the stage to sing “Willkommen” you’re in the proper frame of mind. The powerful show set in the early days of the Nazi regime is always gut-wrenching, but in this version Gayle Rankin, playing Sally Bowles, really twists the knife with her unhinged rendition of the title song.

Marc J. Franklin/Courtesy of Hell's Kitchen

"Hell’s Kitchen"

Shubert Theatre, 225 W. 44th St.; hellskitchen.com

Alicia Keys has worked on this show for 13 years, but sorry — she’s not in it. Instead a young up-and-comer, Maleah Joi Moon, portrays Ali, a character clearly inspired by Keys’ life. The show is not completely biographical, but it does depict key elements of the Grammy winner’s upbringing, growing up in a building on West 43rd Street offering subsidized housing for artists. It’s a jukebox musical of sorts, featuring many of Keys’ best-known songs (“This Girl Is on Fire” blows the roof off the Shubert), but she has worked them seamlessly into this sweet coming-of-age story about a teenager defeating her demons and forging her own path.

Matthew Murphy/Courtesy of Mary Jane

"Mary Jane"

Samuel J. Friedman Theatre,  261 W. 47th St.; manhattantheatreclub.com

Did Rachel McAdams lose her way? You’d have thought the Oscar-nominated actress, who made a name for herself in the 2004 movie “The Notebook,” would have been a couple blocks away starring in the stage adaptation of the famed tearjerker. But no, instead she chose to make her Broadway debut in this gripping drama about a mother managing the care of her gravely ill child. The 90-minute (no intermission) play moves from a cramped apartment to a hospital pediatric intensive care unit, as an assortment of caretakers (night nurse, music therapist, a Buddhist nun) offer their assistance. But truthfully, it’s hard to take your eyes off McAdams as she navigates this unthinkable tragedy.

"Suffs"

The Music Box Theatre,  239 W. 45th St.; suffsmusical.com

In this season of high-profile producers, it’s hard to top Hillary Clinton. And the political nature of the production is inescapable, even before the Biden fundraiser. But forget all that — enjoy Shaina Taub’s musical for what it is, a thoughtful retelling of the suffragists’ struggle to pass the 19th Amendment. With a nod to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Taub plays the lead role herself, and she makes a fine Alice Paul, strident, demanding, unrelenting. And with all the rock blaring at us on Broadway stages right now, her songs are a welcome relief. There were a lot of mothers and daughters in the audience — with good reason.

Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman/Courtesy of Gatsby

"The Great Gatsby"

Broadway Theatre, 1681 Broadway; broadwaygatsby.com

Of all the books getting a theatrical treatment this season, this is the one that has lovers of literature raising their eyebrows. But the adaptation remains relatively faithful to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s treasured classic — it’s no spoiler to say there’s no happy ending. Before the tragic finish, the rich, lavish production takes audiences to the wild, brash parties of the Roaring '20s, with sparkly costumes (I haven’t seen this many sequins since “The Cher Show”), brilliant dancing, music that evokes the jazz age, and some serious pyrotechnics. And yes, there’s a green light at the end of a dock.

"The Notebook"

Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 W. 45th St.; notebookmusical.com

The producers know tears will flow, which is why they’re selling commemorative tissue boxes at the concession stand. And it’s true, at times it’s painful to watch this heart-wrenching love story. Nicholas Sparks, who wrote the best seller that’s sold more than a million copies, told Time magazine the story is so enduring because of the universal elements of life and passion. The stage adaptation sticks pretty close to the book and the subsequent movie, though in the stage version the lovers are portrayed by three different couples.  The performances are stunning, especially from Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett who play the couple in their declining years, and the ending is as bittersweet as they come.

Matthew Murphy/Courtesy of The Outsiders

"The Outsiders"

Jacobs Theatre, 242 W. 45th St.; outsidersmusical.com

Last April, S.E. Hinton joined the cast bringing her 1967 coming-of-age novel to the stage at the Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa (where the story is set).  Oh, and joining them was Angelina Jolie, who’s producing the show. But the musical works without all the hype — it’s a powerful, occasionally brutal display of teenage angst as two rival gangs defend their turf, and the music and choreography have audiences on the edge of their seats. Ultimately, though, it’s an endearing story of a family fighting to stay together.

Jeremy Daniel/Courtesy of The Wiz

"The Wiz"

Marquis Theatre, 210 W. 46th St.;  wizmusical.com

Wayne Brady as the title character in this lively revival doesn’t even show up until the second act, but it’s OK. The Afrocentric take on “The Wizard of Oz” is a fun theater experience thanks to the great songs — “Ease on Down the Road,” “Home” — and the laudable performances from cast members like young Nichelle Lewis, making her Broadway debut as Dorothy, to recording artist Deborah Cox, whose rendition of “Believe in Yourself” brings tears. Don’t try to compare with the 1978 film starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and you’ll have a great time.

Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman/Courtesy of The Who's Tommy

"The Who’s Tommy"

Nederlander Theatre, 208 W. 41st St.; tommythemusical.com

I loved this album more than life itself as a teen, so it was a big thrill to introduce the musical to my daughter and granddaughter. While story lines differ some between album, movie, and stage show, the plot is pretty much expected: Kid witnesses horrific murder and immediately goes deaf, dumb, and blind. It’s a story of acceptance and redemption, but really the audience comes for the music — “Pinball Wizard” rocks the rafters. The Who’s frontman Pete Townshend has been out and about promoting the show; he performed with the young cast of the rock opera, and let’s just say The Tonight Show might never be the same.

Matthew Murphy/Courtesy of Water for Elephants

"Water for Elephants"

Imperial Theatre, 249 W. 45th St.; waterforelephantsthemusical.com

The high-flying acrobatics are worth the price of admission in this new musical, adapted from the best-selling novel and set in a traveling circus during the depression. Seriously, one fearless performer is repeatedly tossed halfway across the stage — I don’t think I ever held my breath so many times in one show. A love story at heart (not always a happy one), the musical is told in flashback as the narrator, once the circus’ vet, looks back on his life. While this is no “Lion King,” the animals are a delight, whether they’re portrayed symbolically (an aerialist portrays a horse in cascading white silks) or the star of the show, Rosie the elephant, a massive, life-size puppet (even if sometimes all you see is her trunk).

The U.S. State Department has issued a new advisory urging travelers to Europe to be extra vigilant when visiting Germany due to concerns about potential terrorist activity.

The advisory, a Level Two – which suggests heightened caution— was released on May 1 and highlights ongoing threats from terrorist groups in Germany, cautioning travelers to remain alert as attacks could occur with minimal warning, noting that “terrorist groups keep planning attacks in Germany.”

The advisory states: “They target tourist locations and transportation hubs. They also target markets/shopping malls and local government facilities. They target hotels, clubs, and restaurants. They also attack places of worship, parks, and major sporting and cultural events. They target schools, airports, and other public areas.”

For reference, Level Three (Reconsider Travel) and Level Four (Do Not Travel) advisories represent more critical levels. However, Germany’s Level Two advisory is noteworthy, given its significant size in central Europe, robust economy, and second-largest population after Russia.

Over the past year, the most severe travel advisories in Europe were primarily linked to the conflict in Ukraine. Do-not-travel advisories were issued for Ukraine (May 2023), Belarus (July 2023), and Russia (September 2023) due to the ongoing hostilities.

If you must travel to Germany, the State Department recommends:

  • Be aware of your surroundings when traveling to tourist locations and crowded public venues.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Monitor local media for breaking events and adjust your plans based on new information.
