That’s all well and good, and during that time, they’ve done a great job marketing to the weekend warrior but at some point, it seemed like they lost touch with the more serious golfer. This year, that tune has changed and the company has brought back their “Tour Preferred” line of irons. The line has three different models; the first is their muscle back or MB model and is for the best of players. On the other end of the spectrum of the Tour Preferred line are the CB’s. These clubs, as you can tell by the name, have a cavity back and have a much larger foot print. In the middle, there are the muscle cavity or MCs.  These clubs combine ideas from the two sets around them to produce a club with a slight cavity, a smaller shape, and thin top lines in a package that also has some of the technology that’s missing from the MBs.

Read on to find out if TaylorMade’s newest irons are as good as they’d have you believe or if they are just another club that will be replaced in a few short months. Specs For the purpose of this review, I received the standard 3-PW set of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons. The set came with the stock KBS Tour shafts, which have become the go-to for many TaylorMade irons. The set has fairly standard lofting for a modern players irons. The irons also came equipped with the standard TaylorMade branded Tour Velvet grip. Detailed specs are as follows:

Design and Technology While these are player’s clubs, no doubt, they still feature quite a lot of technology, which is something that you rarely see in a club in this category. Perhaps the most touted feature of the new set is the inclusion of the Speed Pocket. While the company’s Speed Pocket technology dates back to last year and made its debut on the RocketBladez, it wasn’t around for the previous version of the Tour Preferreed irons. Like the CB model, the MCs have the Speed Pocket milled into the 3-7 irons. This slot, which is filled with a specially formulated polyurethane by 3M, is said to increase ball speeds across the lower portion of the face where miss hits tend to happen the most. This is a technology not found in the MB irons.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

However, the inclusion of the Speed Pocket means that the MCs aren’t completely forged clubs, which they had been in the previous version. Instead, only the 8, 9, and PW (the clubs without the Speed Pocket) are forged, while the rest of the set is cast. Some would worry that might effect the feel, however, TaylorMade says that the cavity of the clubs have been precision engineered to produce the perfect blend of feel, workability, and stability. The grooves have also been precision milled onto the face to give optimal spin out of the rough. The company says that they have paid extra attention to detail with these clubs checking every curve, line and angle throughout production to give a great product. In fact, along with the irons, the company has launched the Tour Preferred 360 program. By registering your 2014 Tour Preferred irons with them, they will give you (through 2015) annual loft and lie checks, annual re-gripping, as well as access to additional content on their website and the Tour Preferred Hotline..

Esthetics From a looks point of view, these clubs are among the cleanest that the company has ever produced. When you put as much technology into clubs as TaylorMade does, it isn’t necessarily easy to hide. While not quite as sleek as the muscle backs in the series, they do have a very simple design, especially when compared to the previous versions of the Tour Preferred irons. While those had kind of an industrial look with the screw and weight port featured prominently in the club’s cavity, these have a beautiful satin chrome chrome finish and limited markings. Above the top of the cavity is the TaylorMade word mark, and in the cavity are the words “Tour Preferred” and MC. The short irons also have “Forged” stamped on the hosel. The only bit of visible technology is the Speed Pocket which spans the length of the sole on the mid and long irons. Also, the clubs with the Speed Pocket, also have a notch cut out from the heel, presumably to save weight. Other than the Speed Pocket on the long and mid irons, the only other marking on the soles is the clubs number.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

At address, the sleekness continues. The clubs have minimal offset (actually less than the MBs in the long irons and just slightly more in the short ones), and thin top lines. While they are a bit larger than their blade counterparts, they still are fairly small clubs, so if you want some meat behind the ball, you may wish to continue on to the CB irons. As stated earlier, the clubs have a satin chrome finish that not only looks great in the bag but also frames the ball beautifully at address. Being as I play my golf in sunny southern California, I like these clubs as the finish helps to reduce glare as it’s kind of hard to hit the ball when you’re being blinded.

Performance I started a thread a couple years back about my clubs being stolen and while it’s never fun to have that happen to you, I was lucky enough to have the clubs covered and wound up with the previous version of the Tour Preferred MC clubs. I played those for a little over a year, and ended up selling them off after getting some new sticks. That maybe one of the only times I’ve regretted selling clubs. Those clubs had great feel and performed well for me, and while the looks of them weren’t loved by all, I liked them. Because of this, I when the opportunity to review these clubs came about I jumped all over it and had high expectations for them. I must say, that I am not one bit disappointed with these clubs.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

To start, as I mentioned, I received these with the stock steel shafts, which in this case were KBS Tour. I have found this to be my favorite shaft as it has a softer feeling compared to either the True Temper Dynamic Gold or Project X shafts that I’ve played previously while launching the ball high. At 120 grams, the shafts are among the heavier ones out there, but, the balance of the club feels right to me and I feel that I can control the shot with them.

One of the more touted features of the club is the Speed Pocket, which TaylorMade says adds distance by increasing ball speed and consistency across the face of the club. In fact, when they debuted the Speed Pocket in last years RocketBladez they challenged consumers to try their 7 iron versus their own, guaranteeing that their’s would be longer. So, is this true, does the Speed Pocket really give more distance? Quite simply, yes. For me, I’ve seen an increase of about 1/2 club in the irons; which while not a huge amount is still nice. With the addition of the Speed Pocket comes a couple of questions and one of those is about the durability of the pocket itself. The pocket is milled into the sole of each of the clubs and then, to prevent dirt and debris from getting in, is filled with a specially formulated polyurethane by 3M. While I’ve only had the clubs a few months I’ve played an average of 3 rounds a week plus practice sessions with them, and they have held up just fine. As far as I’m concerned, durability here shouldn’t be an issue.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

Probably the bigger plus of the Speed Pocket is the increased consistency of the club rather than the added distance. Especially as the clubs get longer, the swing tends to get a little bit more inconsistent leading some shots a little towards the heel or toe or maybe a little thin or fat. The simple truth is that long irons are harder to hit than the short ones. While the Speed Pocket doesn’t completely change this, I’ve noticed a lot more consistency in my distances. No longer is a 4 or 5 iron 10 yards short of where I thought it should be and just as important, shots that I feel like I absolutely got a hold of aren’t flying the green. Sure those shots go a few yards further, but it’s a few yards, not 10.

Another big question that comes up due to the addition of the Speed Pocket is feel. With the Tour Preferred MC irons, only the short irons (8-PW) are forged, and those clubs are also missing the speed pocket. I was curious if, and a bit concerned that, the long and mid irons would feel substantially different from the short irons due to the Speed Pocket and different processes by which they would made. The short irons, as expected, felt just as good as any other forged iron I’ve ever hit. Center hits feel almost like nothing. In the long and mid irons, I don’t really think that the feel is really any different. Good strikes still feel very solid, and not so good strikes feel just a little bit worse. I had a friend hit both the 7 and 8 irons without seeing the clubs sole, and he couldn’t tell a difference in feel. If this is a concern for you, I don’t think it should be.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

Playing in some rather windy conditions as of late has led to situations where it was necessary to hit a few variety of shots. Whether I needed to flight the ball low to stay out of the wind or high to take advantage of it, I don’t feel that these clubs limited me at all. That’s not to say that I pulled the shot off every time, but I’m an 11 handicap. Though these clubs come with the KBS Tour shafts, which tend to hit the ball a bit higher in my experience than Dynamic Golds, I haven’t seen any issues with hitting the ball too high. However, I never would describe myself as a high ball hitter anyways, so if you are, maybe a different shaft choice would be in order. As always, it’s probably best to get fitted and see what works well for you.

Conclusion So, what’s the bottom line on these clubs? I feel that in the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MCs, the company has created a set of irons both for everybody and nobody at the same time. What I mean by that is even as a low double digit handicap, I don’t find these clubs all that hard to hit, which is good news, but much worse than my level, and I might suggest the Tour Preferred CB irons instead. On the other hand, players with better ball striking abilities than myself might prefer the all forged MBs. On the other hand, these clubs kind of give the best of both worlds; you still an iron with a smallish profile and thin top lines as you would in the MBs as well as forged short irons, but you don’t give up the benefits of having the Speed Pocket in the long and mid irons.

However you want to look at it, I truly believe that TaylorMade has created a set that will last for years in the bags of many. I said earlier that I had high expectations for these clubs based upon my experience with the previous Tour Preferred MC irons, and these clubs have more than lived up to those expectations. The looks of the irons have been toned down since the last version and where they were once a bit industrial looking are now the sleekest that TaylorMade has produced in a long time. Couple that with the fact that these irons perform great and you have a recipe for a set worthy of the Tour Preferred name. While I’m sure that I’ll be trying different irons out in the future, it’s going to take something really special to get these out of my bag for good.

Got a used set on eBay with DG X100 and what a gulf between these irons and the RBladz. I really do not know what I have been doing with R-Flex shafts all this time!!! Handicap tumbling down from day 1. Smile…

This is my full Taylormade Tour Preferred Irons Review after getting fitted at a Taylormade Performance Lab.

I have already used my new irons for 5 rounds!

This is my experience and the performance I got out of it!

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

These irons arrived just in time for my first month of golf here in MN.  I’ve played them more than 5 rounds now and I am even happier with them now than when I walked out of the fitting.  I knew they were a good fit, but I didn’t know how it would impact my game.  I didn’t really pick up additional yardage and it wasn’t like I was spraying my previous irons all over the planet, so what were the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons going to bring to my game?  Consistency.  Specially I hit more greens in regulation.   I’ve been tracking data a little closer as of recent to try and figure out where I am losing strokes to par.  I realized that par 3 holes have been my weakness.  Sure I wasn’t getting doubles or triples on them, but 3 out of 4 I would bogey during a typical round.  I found it was because I wasn’t hitting my irons onto the green.  I was always scrambling trying to make par.  I didn’t find it as noticeable on par 4s and 5s, but the 3s were killing my total score.  It is mainly because par 3s tend to be long irons shots for me.  Most are between 200 yards and 150 yards.  With the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons I am getting 3 out of 4 pars and have even snuck in a few birdies.

The additional pars really happened because of the Speed Pockets in the  7-iron and up.  While many want to talk about the additional distance, I found the additional forgiveness is what really sold me on the technology.  I found that I could hit it just about anywhere on the face and there was almost no loss of distance or direction.  I hit so many greens with these long irons even when I came out of the swing feeling like it wasn’t going to happen.  I could still look down at a players shaped club, but get game improvement club results.  The landing circles for the long irons are the tightest I’ve ever hit.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

In the scoring irons 8-PW they offer forged goodness.  Even though they don’t have the Speed Pockets, they are still a moderately forgiving cavity back irons.  They look and feel like players irons when you are hitting those shorter yardages and trying to get close to the pin.  I found  a great consistency with these irons too, but to be fair most short irons tend to be easier to hit for golfers.  What I really appreciated was the turf interaction with these clubs.  They have a good blunted leading edge which resists digging, but yet thin enough to cut in and cut out of the grass, short or tall.  There was just enough camber to react nicely with tight lies too. What is really good is how smoothly they transition from top to bottom.  The feel is consistent from the long irons to the short irons.  Even though the long irons are not forged the Speed Pocket makes up for that, and feel very similar to the forged shorter irons.  I can’t say I could feel a difference between the 7 iron and the 8-iron.  The pocket space and polymer fill creates a softer feel, just like a forged iron.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

The fitting also showed me that importance of the iron shaft too.  While I was able to hit just about every shaft we tried decently, the DG S400 Tour Issue shafts made everything tighter and better.  It lowered the spin, and made the landing zone smaller.  They are basically a little heavier shaft with tighter tolerances.   Those specs turned into results on the course.

Another nice addition was the Tour Preferred 50* wedge.  I found I had a gap between my pitching wedge and 54* wedge.  Now it depends on the set of wedges I play, but I’ve really gravitated toward this set-up lately meaning I need a gap wedge of some sort.  Some irons sets include them, the Tour Preferred MC’s don’t.  But the new TaylorMade Tour Preferred wedges will work well with all their sets.  It made a perfect transition between my irons and wedges.  I had excellent distance control with this wedge.  It was my go to 100 yard club.  It was set up to match the rest of my set during my fitting.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

The final touch of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred line showed up in the mail after I’d played about 3 rounds with these clubs; a Tour Preferred Membership pack.  2 sleeves of Tour Preferred balls, a ball marker and a membership card for my irons in case they needed adjustments or spec checks along the way.  It was a really nice touch for registering my clubs into their database.

If new irons are on your list for 2014 or if you could use some improvements to your iron game without hitting game-improvement irons, the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons are the perfect mix of technology and looks.  There is finally an iron for better players that helps them hit lower scores without looking the part.  I suggest going to a TMPL (TaylorMade Performance Lab) near you and hitting all the new TaylorMade irons.  The fitting will really give you confidence and will set you up with the best set of irons for your game.  The Tour Preferred MC irons were the best fit for me because they have the technology my game needs, but the looks I want.

The creation of the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC Forged Irons starts with an exclusive 6-step forging process, which produces a more precisely shaped and finished head that looks and performs beautifully. The sole is moderate to narrow in thickness and less cambered, preventing deep digging. The leading edge features minimal heel-to-toe radius with the ideal amount of camber to cut cleanly and precisely into the turf with little to no resistance. Additionally, the advanced groove design promotes more spin and control from the rough.

TaylorMade's precision-weighting port is incorporated into the TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC Forged Irons, guaranteeing precise swing weights while ensuring optimal and consistent CG location in every clubhead to promote optimized ball flight in the long-, middle- and short-irons.

Golf Monthly Technical Editor Paul O'Hagan tests TaylorMade's Tour Preferred irons

Above, Golf Monthly Technical Editor Paul O'Hagan gives his TaylorMade Tour Preferred Irons review.

The clubs come in three models - CB, MB and MC - and were unveiled in January 2014.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB irons are an authentic muscle-back blade forged from soft, 1025 carbon steel with a classic and compact shape, a thin top line and minimal offset.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons featuree a muscle-cavity to boost the moment of inertia, creating an all-round iron product with feel, workability and stability.

The 3- 7-irons feature TaylorMade's Speed Pocket to promote increased ball speed in the lower portion of the clubface and more consistency across the entire face.

The head, top-line and sole-width of the Tour Preferred MC are all slighty larger than those on the Tour Preferred MB.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB is a complete cavity-back which combines the shape of a player's iron with the look of a blade at set-up.

The Speed Pocket in the 3- 7-irons feature micro-slots for fast ball speeds across the whole face, as well as higher launch for more distance.

TaylorMade claims the Tour Preferred CB is one of the longest player's irons it has ever created.

The heads of the short irons are compact with minimal offset, and long and middle iron heads are a touch larger with progressive offset, offering more stability and easier launch.

The TaylorMade Tour Preferred CB, Tour Preferred MC and Tour Preferred MC come in 3-iron to pitching wedge with a satin nickel-chrome finish. All three models come with KBS Tour steel shafts and tour velvet grips.

Tour Preferred MC

TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC combines a player’s shape with a shallow “muscle cavity” to boost MOI, creating an unparalleled blend of beauty, feel, workability and stability.

The 3- through 7-iron incorporate TaylorMade’s renowned Speed Pocket technology to promote increased ball speed in the lower portion of the clubface for more consistent ball speed and launch conditions across the entire face.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

The clubhead’s length, top line and sole-width are all slightly larger compared to the Tour Preferred MB.

Looks: Oozes class. Another beautiful looking iron that will appeal to the better players. It features a nice, thin top edge but also appears to have a longer face, which will no doubt still suit the guys in the high singles. Some of the lower handicappers might not like that though. One of the better looking irons.

Feel: Very rewarding sensation off the face with a nice, soft blow. It's a fast face too, so it's ideal. Hot and soft - the perfect combination. The standard KBS Tour, as we keep saying, is one of our favourite shafts on the market. It's just so easy to control through impact, particularly against something like a True Temper S300. Tour Velvet grip is also very comfortable for a standard offering.

Performance: Very forgiving, very powerful and very workable. Probably the easiest iron in this test to work both ways. Balls were flying on an ideal mid-high trajectory, too. Distance is so hot however that it could cause a few problems as the Speed Pocket works its magic. This iron will take a bit of practice to get used to the distance gains but you could be onto a winner after several weeks. Distance control is superb, though. It wasn't as if one ball was finishing shorter than the other, they were all flying long.

Verdict: Looks, feels and performs superb. One of the best in the test. Only drawback is distance, which while a positive in the sense it gets you out there and won't ever leave you short of the pin, the 6-iron was coming out at easily 5-iron distance. Remarkably, the 6-iron is 30-degree loft, one of the highest in the test, so it just goes to show how powerful and impressive the Speed Pocket technology is. This will certainly suit the better player concerned with distance. Expensive at £850 but these really are quite special.

Mitsubishi Diamana WB: Club Junkie takes a technology deep dive

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

The golf club market can be a confusing place for consumers, no matter their skill level. The latest and greatest products that are designed by modern manufacturers are usually the best performing options when properly fit to your swing. The only problem is, new clubs are also typically the most expensive options.

In a sport that’s already quite expensive, is making the investment on new clubs always worth the high price tags?

Here at GolfWRX.com, we believe that whether you’re buying expensive new equipment or more affordable used options, you should get a proper club fitting from an expert fitter. Factors such as club length, loft, lie angle, overall design, weight settings, shaft flex, shaft weight and even grip size can all make a drastic impact on how the club feels and performs to the individual golfer. It’s not easy trying to figure out all of that by yourself, so working with an expert is imperative.

Now, when it comes to deciding on buying old versus new clubs, the conversation becomes a little more personalized to your specific budget and performance needs.

When you look at the clubs that are being used on the PGA Tour , most professional golfers opt to use the newest equipment possible, or they have clubs that are customized and prototyped to their exact liking.

That’s not always the case, however. Sometimes, PGA Tour players use golf clubs that were released several years ago, and they are still available on the current market for a more affordable price. Although the clubs are older designs, some Tour players still find benefits because the designs have managed to withstand the test of time.

I call these clubs the “Modern Classics.”

The benefit for consumers when it comes to these Modern Classics is that they’re currently available on the market for a fraction of the cost of new equipment, but they’re still viable options to use – even on the PGA Tour.

For our new 8-part club testing series in partnership with 2nd Swing Golf, I chose 8 classic golf clubs that are still used on the professional level, and each club can still be found online at 2nd Swing Golf’s website , or at 2nd Swing Golf retail outlets . Although these used clubs can be found at other third-party retail sites, as well, we chose to conduct this testing at 2nd Swing because, in my personal opinion, they have one of the largest selections of used equipment on the market, and they certify the quality of each club that they sell.

Also, the 2nd Swing store in Scottsdale has over 15 fitting bays that are equipped with launch monitors, and they have a team of expert club fitters to help analyze the numbers.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

The first club that I chose to test in this 8-part video series was a TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC 4-iron that was first released to the public in 2011. As we’ve discussed at length at GolfWRX.com, PGA Tour player Daniel Berger still uses a set of TaylorMade TP MC 2011 irons.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

For this specific test, I pitted a used TaylorMade TP MC 2011 4-iron (22 degrees) against my current gamer 4-iron (24 degrees) from my set of golf clubs; each club was shafted with an extra stiff steel shaft. I hit 5 shots with each club, using a high-end tour golf ball. We deleted any outliers, and then we analyzed the numbers with the help of 2nd Swing expert fitter Cliff Walzak, who’s a well-respected and longtime club fitter in the industry.

In the video at the top of the page, we break down the entire test, the launch monitor numbers, and then I assign a value rating to the club. Just a heads up, not every club tested in the series will score such a high rating, but we happened to start off with an especially top-tier Modern Classic.

If you’re interested in testing/purchasing the TaylorMade TP MC 2011 irons for yourself, they’re currently available on 2nd Swing’s website for $84.99 for an individual iron , or $339.99 for an entire set .

What other 7 clubs do you think I chose for this Modern Classics video series?

Original Callaway Apex Pro irons should be on this list in my opinion. They’ve certainly withstood the test of time with some pros still gaming the longer irons from that 2013/14 release.

Forgive me for being blunt, but unless you are testing clubs with matching specifications (SW, grip make and size, shaft make and flex, loft, etc.), nothing of value will be learnt here.

This type of test is best suited for mainstream golf publications catering to the uneducated. The GolfWRX readership is not well served by this.

Testing the Taylormade R1 vs. Stealth 2 would be great as well. The others I would love to see are player distance product, since there is the “tec” involved. Something like P790 vs. Mizuno H5?

Why Wesley Bryan is playing two 4-irons this week

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

…Flash forward to THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson 2024 at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas, and Bryan is still playing with a mixed Takomo set, except he’s added a new 101 U 4-iron, plus a Titleist T200 4-iron, and he’s dropping his 5-iron.

That bears repeating: Bryan is switching to an iron setup that consists of two 4-irons and no 5-iron.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

On paper, that looks wrong, but when you look at yardage gapping instead of the number on the sole of the iron, things start to make more sense.

As Bryan explained to GolfWRX.com on Tuesday in Texas, his Takomo 301 CB 6-iron goes about 195-200 yards. Then, his new hollow-bodied Takomo 101U Driving Iron, which he recently started testing “a couple weeks ago” and bent about 2 degrees weak, goes about 220 yards, and the Titleist T200 4-iron goes about 235 yards.

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

Speaking on his new Takomo 101U Driving Iron, which sells for $119, Bryan had this to say:

“It’s super forgiving and launches high, and it has a bit longer of a profile to where it looks really good,” said Bryan. “If people are willing to play something that doesn’t have an expensive price tag on their club…[I started testing it] in the last couple weeks and it’s in the bag.

“I just made it like 2 degrees weaker. Basically that gap from 205 to 225 I was in a little bit of a dead space, so I’m going to try and fill that gap better.”

Check out Wesley Bryan’s full WITB here.

Most forgiving players irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

taylormade 2014 tour preferred mc

In our forums, o ur members have been discussing players irons. WRXer ‘NorthTXGolf’ is on the hunt for some new irons but is putting a priority on forgiveness, and has reached out to fellow members who have been sharing their thoughts and advice on the subject in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Sam217: “i230 has got to be one of the most forgiving players irons available. Cobra King Tour another. Don’t sleep on the New Level 480 DB coming out soon.”
  • RangeBaller: “ZX5/ZX7 and i230 should definitely be in your testing pool.”
  • YAMS49: “Another I210 homie here… Very highly recommended if you want/need spin and a consistent yardage.”
  • golf-RN: “I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren’t punished too hard regarding distance.”

Was at Golftown yesterday and they had brand new sets of both for 499$, with KBS tour stiffs.

Anyone still using these? I love my JPX825's but i've dabbled with buying a smaller set just to see if i like them better. And 499$ is a nice price once i trade in a couple of things

Just wondering if people liked them, the MC's in particular. They are a really classy looking iron to be honest. And i haven't said that much about TMAG

I still have and use my 2014 tour preferred cbs. They are some great sticks. They feel really solid for a set of cast irons. The lofts are a bit jacked up, especially coming from a set of forged mizunos, but once I adjusted they were great.

I actually just put them in the bag Jeff there was a local mom and pop shop that had them a few bux cheaper, but I almost got them from GT too first round I shot 72 w some very good approach shots forgiving enough in the long irons, good flight and the KBS shafts aren't terrible IMO these are the best looking irons TM has ever produced, no idea why it only lasted one season guess thats TM great irons for an awesome price

I have a set of Ping G30's, Mizuno MP54's and a set of Tour Preferred CB's, and the Tour Preferred CB's definitely get more course time than both of the other two sets put together. They're an excellent set of Irons, so much so, I'm not going to chase the unicorn any more, or make statements such as ' I just love buying golf clubs, it's a hobby of mine to ho' as an ongoing excuse for being a dumba**. Lol. Seriously though, the CB's will stay in the bag until the grooves are dead. They're that good.

I have a set of 2014 MC's that are about to replace a set of Ping S56's. I find the longer irons in the MC's are more forgiving than the s56's. Oddly enough, the short irons in the MC's that are forged don't feel any softer than the s56's.

As I said before, I had a set of the 2014 MCs and I wish I hadn't sold them. I actually had MC in 6-PW and 4-5 in CB. It was an awesome set. The CBs are stronger lofted so I had bigger gaps between the 4, 5, and 6 which I loved. My set had KBS Tour in X flex. I hit them high, but not any higher than the Modus 120s I have now. When I bought them I was concerned the KBS Tour X was going to be too stout, but they weren't. They didn't play nearly as stiff as I expected after playing DG X100s in a prior set of irons.

2014 CB, really do like them, but looking at forged now. These are soft for cast, about like the new i series ping. The low irons are too offset for my liking. I know one thing for sure, I'll be sticking to KBS in my next set, really like that shaft.

Prices are falling faster on these now...For some reason the 2014's don't seem to have the staying power of the 2011 Tour Preferred series Irons from TaylorMade. Not exactly sure why, but perhaps one reason is because the normally popular MC's are not fully-forged throughout the full set. The MC 3 to 7-irons are cast heads with speed pockets like the CB's. (Only the MC 8 and 9-irons are fully-forged heads). Apparently, these new MC features weren't as well-received on Tour, or in the marketplace, as TM was expecting. Tthe fully-forged 2014 MB's will likely remain salient a bit longer than the CB's or MC's at major Retailers since there is really no other iron available from TM for "purist" type players. The 2014 TP MB's are currently being played by many of TM's top Tour Staff Professionals which should help it remain relevant and visible. Too bad the MC line may have a shorter retail life than expected because to my eye, the 2014 MC's are very nice looking heads. Maybe it wasn't so much the MC "speed pockets" as it was the "non-forged feel" of the 3-7 irons within the 2014 MC set that caused TM Staffers who formerly used 2011 MC's to choose the MB's instead for 2014. I definitely don't see the RSi TP's, (which adds even more slots), to be a satisfactory option for those who are looking for a forged players cavity back iron from TaylorMade. Your thoughts?

Found that the 8-pw or 7-pw or whatever it was, that were fully forged felt worse then the longer irons with resin in them. They weren't great or terrible, had 130 nippons in them and maybe the shafts weren't a good fit but I would give them a B- or a C+, nothing special about them. Sold them after about a month and was glad to get them sold quickly as well all know how the market for TM club works.
