South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem defends her account of killing own dog in new book

South Dakota governor and Republican vice presidential contender Kristi Noem on Friday responded to a news report about a section of her forthcoming book where she describes killing her 14-month-old dog.

“We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm,” she said in a post to X above a headline from The Guardian , which obtained a copy of Noem's upcoming book, “No Going Back.”

The Guardian's article describes a section of Noem's book, set for release next month, in which she recounted shooting her dog after deciding it was “less than worthless” and “untrainable.”

In her account, Noem grabbed her gun and led the dog, named Cricket, to a gravel pit.

“It was not a pleasant job, but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done,” Noem wrote.

She then went on to kill a family goat, which she called “nasty and mean.” Noem also led the goat to a gravel pit, where she said her first shot wounded but did not kill the animal. She got another shell for her gun and killed the goat, according to the book.

Noem wrote that her daughter seemed confused when she came home from school, asking, “Hey, where's Cricket?”

NBC News has not obtained Noem's book or independently verified the section reported by The Guardian.

Noem was lambasted Friday on social media; some said they were “ horrified ,” while others posted pictures of their dogs .

Noem is widely viewed as a top contender to be Trump's running mate. She is in her second term as South Dakota governor, and she previously served as the state's lone representative in the U.S. House.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? 

JC: The goal was to play third base for the New York Yankees and be a meteorologist on TV during the off-season. No, really...

Q: You are the father of two busy kiddos , Cameron and Liam. I’ve noticed on your social media how active they are — from rock climbing to soccer to basketball. In your opinion, what are some of the lifelong lessons you think sports teach kids? 

JC: Sports give you three things. 

It teaches discipline. It provides memories that last a lifetime. But it's the bonding and camaraderie that you have with your teammates is what I want them to experience most. 

To this day, I still get together with my old high school teammates to regale them about our championships. 

And in an age of bullying, power in numbers is a good thing. 

Q: You are a politics junkie. If you could invite any three U.S. presidents, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be? 

JC: Ooooh. Great question. I'd go Kennedy. Reagan. Trump.

All three had connections to football: Jack played at Harvard. Reagan played The Gipper. Trump owned the New Jersey Generals of the old USFL.

Q: Speaking of dinner parties, last year I hosted one where everyone had to come ready to share their own "unpopular opinion." For example, "Bruce Springsteen's music is overrated," or, "Football, not baseball, is truly America’s sport." What unpopular opinion would you have brought to my dinner party? 

JC : Bill Clinton was a great president. Didn't see that coming, did you? 

And yes, everyone thinks of Monica first. That was insanely stupid and ego-driven to do what he did with an intern in an Oval Office. 

But when looking at his record, he — along with the House GOP — achieved a balanced budget and surpluses. He declared that big government was over. 

"The border was secure. We were at peace."

He ended welfare as we know it. 

The economy was strong. Unemployment was low. Crime was low. 

The border was secure. We were at peace. 

That's a hell of a record, but he blew his legacy with the ultimate unforced error that was the Monica affair.

Q: What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? 

JC: I'm a trivia freak and to the point I DVR "Jeopardy" every night — a show I remember seeing you on once. 

But you can ask Jesse Watters . I'm basically unbeatable in his "Sink or Swim" mini-game show he plays on his program on Fridays. I used to even host trivia contests during my days in Hoboken. 

At first, it was to meet girls, but it morphed into true love from there. 

If looking for a runner-up, I collect refrigerator magnets during every vacation we take . 

Q: You are a huge baseball fan. What’s the most memorable game you’ve ever attended? 

JC: Honestly, it wasn't a game. I went to Emerson College in Boston my freshman year before transferring out. Great school to learn broadcasting, but the urban environment wasn't my jam, so I left for Maryland and its gorgeous campus instead.

But when I was at Emerson, my dorm was steps from Fenway Park. And one winter day, I was walking by and saw a garage door open leading to center field. So I just began walking into the stadium, thinking someone was going to stop me. It didn't happen. 

Touched the Green Monster . Simulated some at-bats. Had the place all to myself. That's the kind of thing you don't forget. 

Q: Which historical figure do you think would be really funny on X? 

JC: You gotta go Winston Churchill here. The guy had bourbon for breakfast. 

And studies show that alcohol increases the size of the "send" button by 89%...

Q: If you had a boat, what would you name it? 

JC: I was just telling a friend about this: It's a tie between "Off the Hook" and "Liquid Courage." 

Now if I only could afford a boat. 

Q: What writing advice would you offer aspiring columnists who are aiming to enhance their craft?

JC: Do it every day. Keep a journal. Share your work and get feedback, good and bad. 

And research it like a Navy SEAL would take to training. 

Be authentic. Don't use words you would never use at happy hour.

Nick Schroeder, 42, of Portland, is communications manager and multidisciplinary programmer for Space, a nonprofit arts venue in Portland. He’s also an actor, director and ensemble member with Mad Horse Theatre Company in South Portland. A native of Old Orchard Beach, he’s worked as a journalist and editor at several local publications.

As much as I like bopping around the state by myself, I’ll spend my perfect Maine day with my partner, Mallory, and our nearly 3-year-old toddler. The kid’s in the stage of life where she asks why to just about everything, and that question makes for good conversation.

Getting dressed (finding pants, socks, etc. and negotiating their deployment) can take a while in my house, so we’ll put on WMPG to keep the energy loose. I’ll pour a good cup of coffee, Speckled Ax Early Riser preferred , in my clunky travel mug. Then we’ll get things cracking at that one real good climbing tree in the park for a little proprioceptive rinse. The branches are real low to the ground and I don’t have to worry about my kid taking any nasty falls.

Will Zu Bakery still have croissants by now, or is that too much morning meandering? The neighbors tend to swarm the little West End spot – how is it this good? – and it can quickly sell out. If that’s the case, we’ll drive south. Actually, scratch that – Mallory will drive this leg, and I’ll bike. Our destinations will be the same, Palace Diner (in Biddeford). I’ll have the omelet du jour and those great big potatoes, and maybe a bite of my kid’s pancake – the dad handbook clearly states that you must eat your children’s leftovers. We’ll all poke our heads inside Biddeford Vintage Market and see what new vendors they’ve got (my aunt Barb runs the place with some friends) before making a quick spin into Color.Sound.Oblivion to check their newly stocked records.

With family who live nearby, I’ll be able to ditch the bike and hop into the car, heading north. We’ll stop in Portland to grab a couple of arepas for the road from the outrageously good Colombian food restaurant Maïz, and head to South Paris. In this fantasy, the Celebration Barn has a perfectly timed matinee show, and true to form, it’s equally enchanting for kids and adults.

After that, we’ll drive to Rockland (here’s where the kid naps) and head to a beach (any beach) before I pop into Curator , one of few consignment shops that bothers to stock nice stuff for tall fellas. Then it’s over to Rock City Cafe for a refill and a poke around Hello Hello Books behind the cafe. Last time, I found a nice used paperback of a Judy Chicago biography. Will I get this lucky again?

Returning to Portland, we’ll have had our fill of driving and Raffi sing-alongs. It’s time for our A-list East End retail trifecta – Ferdinand  for handmade wonders, Starry Eyes  for snazzy kids’ stuff, and Print: A Bookstore (more books!).

For dinner, the ideal is Asmara , the great Eritrean gem, where we as a family can share big communal plates of colorful food using only our hands as utensils. After we put the kid to bed, I’ll text a friend, and if his kid’s asleep, too, we can sneak out for a little nightcap at the Continental and discuss the news.
