Welcome to the new east lake golf club: 5 takeaways from the restoration.

ATLANTA – With $25 million going to this week’s winner at the Tour Championship and the game’s best players trying to end their seasons on a high note, it was slightly counterintuitive that the buzz on the range Tuesday at the finale wasn’t about either the waiting wealth or the circuit’s embarrassment of riches. Instead, Tuesday’s talk was about East Lake’s recent restoration.

By many accounts, architect Andrew Green’s handiwork transformed East Lake from a largely one-dimensional test into a more nuanced layout that is poised to challenge the game’s best in new and inspired ways.

Five things you need to know about the new and improved East Lake:

  • East Lake took over as the permanent host of the Tour Championship in 2004 and has produced a wide range of winners from Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to Brandt Snedeker and Bill Haas. But in recent years, the course has been dominated by the modern bomber — with Rory McIlroy winning two of the last six events and Xander Schauffele finishing either first or second in four of the last seven finales — and has, like many venues, had a difficult time combatting distance.

While length will continue to be crucial in Atlanta, driving accuracy will become much more important, particularly with fairways and greens that are exceedingly firm.

gp_eastlake.jpg

“I wouldn’t say East Lake ever had a lot of strategy off the tee before. It was always kind of tree-lined fairways, narrow fairways, and you had an occasional bunker here and there. But usually it’s just you either hit driver or 3-wood, and you have to hit it straight,” said Viktor Hovland, last year’s champion at East Lake. “But at least here when he’s (Green) taken away so many trees, you really have to emphasize the strategy portion of it or else it just becomes a bombing-fest where everyone hits driver. I do think Andrew has done a great job with positioning certain bunkers.”

  • Green used a 1949 aerial photo of East Lake as a guide to returning the course to something closer to what Donald Ross had in mind when he designed the original layout in 1913.

One of the best examples of that original architecture was the eighth hole, which was reimagined into a drivable par 4 (at 390 yards on the card) with the lake looming down the left side of the hole.

“If it’s drivable, I think I definitely plan on hitting driver. Used to be a pretty intimidating tee shot with that wind left to right. It still is, but just because it’s drivable it feels like it’s easier potentially,” Schauffele said. “You can hit it in that right bunker and try and get up and down from there. But if the tee is back, it’s going to be a 4-iron or a hybrid for me kind of up that right side, and kind of play from there.”

  • Green and Co. expanded the namesake lake during the restoration bringing the hazard into play more often, particularly on the par-5 18th, which is almost entirely bisected by water. During the restoration, Green also removed a stand of trees that separated the 18 th and 10 th fairways and created a possible alternate route to play the last hole.

Multiple players have practiced hitting their tee shots on No. 18 down the 10 th fairway, which takes the water out of play and creates a decent approach to the green. Players have also practiced playing their layups into the 10 th fairway if they find the rough off the tee.

“It seems like a safer play to take all that out of play, hit it down 10. The green is going to be pretty extraordinarily hard to hold anyways with it being a downslope and having a long club in there. It’s more you’re playing for birdies. There is less opportunity, I think, for eagle than there was before,” said Scottie Scheffler, who will begin the week with a two-shot lead under the starting-strokes format.

BMW Championship - Round Two

According to multiple sources, officials considered creating an internal out-of-bounds boundary that separated the 18 th and 10 th holes to keep players from taking the alternate route but felt it would be too penal.

  • The consensus among players is that the restoration will result in a more demanding test but that might not lead to a higher scoring average due to a key setup change.

The 14 th hole will play as a 580-yard par 5 for this week’s Tour Championship after previously playing as a par 4 (520 yards last year) and one of the layout’s most historically demanding holes.

No. 14 ranked as the fourth-hardest hole during last year’s Tour Championship (4.125 stroke average) and, according to multiple players, will likely play only slightly higher as a par 5 this week.

  • The variety of East Lake’s par 3s has always been the layout’s DNA and Green didn’t change that identity. In fact, many of the changes enhanced the par 3s, particularly the ninth hole.

Although the green was moved closer to the lake that separated the putting surface from the tee box, the hole has been extended to 260 yards.

The firm greens will likely keep officials from playing No. 9 to its full length. The 15 th hole, which is listed at 215 yards, will also likely be played from a shorter tee because of the conditions.

“I do think we’ll learn some stuff. The back tee on 9, the back tee on 15 will not be used this week,” Green said, “and we’ll see next year if it’s a good fit. If not, that’s OK.”

For the first time since 2004, the LPGA Tour will return to New England over Labor Day weekend.

The event, which begins on Aug. 29 , will be played at TPC Boston in Norton — one of Massachusetts’ premier golf courses. And now the field for the event is set.

According to a press release from the LPGA, 56 tour winners are included in this year’s field including 15-time champion Jin Young Ko, as well as two-time 2024 winners Hannah Green and Lauren Coughlin. Mass. natives Megan Khang and Alexa Pano are also in the field, as is 2024 bronze medalist Xiyu Lin.

“We have great history with the game of golf in New England and Massachusetts,” LPGA legend Pat Bradley said during the tournament’s media day. “It’s just thrilling to know that we’re going to have these tremendous athletes that have great game. Everybody in this New England area is going to witness these great players.

“I’m excited to cheer them on and to be there and watch this great tournament unfold.”

There are 144 golfers taking part in the tournament and competing for a $3.8 million purse — the largest prize fund on the LPGA Tour outside of the majors and tour championship.

Three spots remain in the FM Championship field, and will be filled by the winner of the AIG Women’s Open if they’re not already in the field, as well as the top two finishers of Monday’s Local Qualifying Round, according to the LPGA Tour press release.

You can view the entire field here.

Why is a Women's Open contender sporting a New England Patriots logo?

2160787957

Sporting her Patriots logo, Alex Pano watches a drive during the Amundi Evian Championship in July.

Valerio Pennicino

For a couple of years, second-year LPGA player Alexa Pano has been the only woman in professional golf sporting an NFL logo on her clothes and bag. The story goes that the 20-year-old Pano and her family, who hail from the Boston suburbs, are rabid New England Patriots fans, and when she qualified for 2022 U.S. Open, they decided there was plenty of room on her bag for one of the coolest logos in sports. (C’mon, admit it, Bills fans.)

But as famous as the logo is, the young Pano is still finding her footing in the pro game after first becoming known for appearing as a 7-year-old in the documentary about kids’ golf called, “The Short Game.” Pano notched her first victory in an event co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET last August, but it came in Northern Ireland and didn’t get much notice in the States.

Now, Pano’s profile will no doubt be raised on Sunday morning, when she begins the final round of the AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews trailing leader Jijai Shin by only four shots. And, with Pano no doubt sporting a jacket for what is expected to be another cold and blustery summer day in Scotland, plenty of viewers will be asking, “What’s up with that Pats logo?”

2168187645

Alexa Pano has had to wear jackets this week because the Scottish weather has been like Massachusetts in November.

Michael Reaves

“It's a really cool deal for me,” Pano said on Saturday after shooting a second straight 69 on the Old Course to get to three under and into a tie for sixth. “They are supportive of everything I do, and to have something that you've idolized and watched on TV and be supportive of you is really cool.”

Panos’ father, Rick, who was featured prominently in the movie, has been a longtime Patriots season ticket holder. Alexa, not surprisingly, adopted Dad’s team, and it just seemed natural to put the logo on her bag for the U.S. Women’s Open when she didn’t yet have many sponsors while grinding on the developmental Epson Tour. (She skipped college and turned pro at 17.)

“We put the Patriots logo on it because it was special to my family and whatnot. That was supposed to be a one week ordeal,” Pano said. “I did an interview with the Patriots about it that week and didn’t think anything of it, but thought it was amazing.

“[The] next week I was back competing on the Epson Tour, and they wanted to make it more of a permanent thing and make the relationship official.”

There are, of course, some perks that come with the relationship. Pano said she has met members of the Kraft family that owns the team and spent some time on the field for a game last season against the Chiefs. She was star struck in once meeting the GOAT Tom Brady, but also noted with a smile, “I'm also a big Julian Edelman girl.”

Even those guys paled in comparison to the opportunity Pano got to see arguably the world’s biggest star, Taylor Swift.

“They did help me get some Eras Tour tickets last year,” Pano said, “so that was really cool.”

LPGA Tour returns to New England with $3.5M event

The LPGA Tour is returning to New England in 2024 with a $3.5 million event at TPC Boston.

The FM Global Championship will take place from Aug. 29-Sept. 1 with 144 players battling for the largest purse outside of the majors and tour championship.

The event in Norton, Mass., will be the first in New England since the 2004 U.S. Women's Open at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.

"Boston is quickly becoming a dynamic home for women's sports," LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said in a news release Friday. "We are thrilled to join this incredible movement, as the famed TPC Boston prepares to host the 2024 FM Global Championship, marking a historic return of the LPGA Tour to New England."

The 2024 event kicks off a five-year partnership between FM Global, a commercial property insurance company, and the LPGA Tour.

"We are proud and excited to welcome the LPGA Tour back to Massachusetts," Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said. "Sports play an important role in shaping the lives of women, advancing equity and strengthening our communities. The opportunity to see women perform at the highest levels of the game will bring tremendous excitement and enthusiasm."

TPC Boston, located 25 miles south of Boston, opened in 2002 with an original layout by Arnold Palmer, followed by a 2007 redesign by Gil Hanse and Brad Faxon. The course has hosted 17 PGA Tour events.

For the Tour Championship, 30 Players Will Take on a New East Lake Golf Club

Bob harig | 6 hours ago.

East Lake Golf Club (the 9th hole is pictured last year) has undergone an extensive restoration in time for this year's Tour Championship

ATLANTA — The clubhouse at East Lake Golf Club is a shrine to Bobby Jones, the great amateur golfer who is likely known more for founding Augusta National a few hours down the road or winning the Grand Slam.

But Jones got his start in the game here, where numerous trophies, prizes, mementos and photographs adorn the walls and hallways.

It is where he honed his game, where he is said to have played his first and last rounds and why the course came into prominence, having been redesigned by Donald Ross in 1913.

A local charitable group went to great lengths in the early 1990s to revitalize the neighborhood and the PGA Tour came in a few years later to bring its season-ending Tour Championship to the venue—first on an every-other-year basis and annually since 2004.

Since 2007 it has been home to the FedEx Cup’s final event, with a bonus pool of $100 million this year and $25 million going to the winner.

And to get it this year, the 30-man field will be playing virtually a new golf course.

The routing of East Lake remains the same but most of the holes look completely different.

A restoration began soon after Viktor Hovland won last year’s Tour Championship that concluded in June. Nobody played the course until recently and the 30 players who are in the field for this week’s tournament are somewhat amazed at what they are seeing.

“As soon as I walked on the property, I was kind of shocked,” said Hovland, who last year won the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship on his way to capturing the FedEx Cup title. “It looks nothing like it used to.

“Seems like he's basically changed every single hole out there. It was just kind of wild how much you can actually change the holes with not really moving holes around. It's all kind of in the same place, but yet none of the holes look exactly the same.”

“He” would be Andrew Green, a golf course architect who also redesigned Oak Hill Country Club, site of last year’s PGA Championship and also a Ross course.

Green got into the weeds of trying to restore the course to the way Ross originally designed it. He went into the club archives. He studied government topographical maps, including ones he found from 1949. He noticed numerous areas where the course has been changed over the years and wanted to get it back as close as possible.

“We would want something (photos) in the ’30s or maybe late ’20s, but because the resolution in ’49 was so crystal clear, you can zoom in and start to see shadows and edges, and we paired that with a set of photos we had right before (architect) George Cobb did his work, before the (1963) Ryder Cup, and now we've painted a complete picture of how things sat on the ground,” Green said.

“So you'll just see little hints. A good example would be the first green used to sit right on the boundary, right on the road. We would never put it right on the road again. Its shift created the two levels that mimic the two different greens that were at totally different elevations originally.

“So just a way to kind of use it as a part of the story, try to hold as much of the original intent as we can, but obviously things have changed.”

So much so that Xander Schauffele is treating it as a brand new golf course.

Schauffele is entering the Tour Championship second in FedEx Cup points behind Scottie Scheffler, meaning he’s two shots behind in the staggered-strokes format used for the event.

Three times, Schauffele has shot the low 72-hole score at East Lake, but only once—in 2017—did he get a trophy. That’s when he was the winner of the Tour Championship and there was a separate title for the FedEx Cup champ, won by Justin Thomas.

Now the event has just one winner, and Schauffele has been close, although he feels his advantage on a course he liked is gone.

“It’s just a new golf course,” Schauffele said. “Kind of a glass-half-full guy, so I've played a lot of new courses this year that I've done O.K. at, and this is a brand new property. Literally the bunkers are new, the grasses are new in the fairways, the greens are new, the grass on the greens are new, the runouts are different, the slopes are different.

“I think the only thing that's the same are the directions of the hole. Whatever record I had is the past. I have no memory or anything really on any hole to go off of, not even a tree I could aim at that I used to aim at. It's just that different.

“To me, it's got the same name; it's East Lake Golf Club. It's in the same property, similar square footage. But that's about it.”

Scheffler might welcome the change a bit more. He’s never quite felt comfortable at East Lake. Each of the past two years, he came into the Tour Championship as the points leader and didn’t win.

He’s in the same position now.

“I felt like I hadn’t played my best golf here,” Scheffler said. “So coming here this year, year, seeing a fresh golf course that I think is going to be really challenging I think will suit me pretty well out there.”

Among the biggest changes to the course was the 14th hole being changed to a par-5, making the course now a par-71.

“I could probably try to describe a person that's never been here before what it used to look like, and it's almost like you can't imagine it,” Hovland said. “It'll be interesting to kind of get used to it, that's for sure.

“Just from being here four or five times before and just remembering what it used to be, I just think it was a way more kind of simplistic golf course before. It was simple but it was very, very good. I'm still a little bit biased towards what it used to be.

“But I understand the whole look of the golf course, as soon as I stepped foot here and saw the green areas and stuff, I thought, O.K., this is a major championship golf course. That seems like what he's tried to do with the place.”

Tour Championship has same venue. East Lake feels like a brand new course

The Tour Championship is back at East Lake for the 24th time

ATLANTA -- The Tour Championship returns to East Lake for the 24th time. Xander Schauffele is not alone in feeling as though he is on a brand new course.

East Lake went through an extensive renovation by architect Andrew Green, who most notably refurbished Oak Hill for the PGA Championship last year, and the changes are stark.

“This is not the same golf course,” Scottie Scheffler said while playing the front nine when he arrived Monday.

Schauffele was more direct, and perhaps the most skeptical. No one has played East Lake better over the last decade . He has never been over par in seven years, with a scoring average just under 67,

“It's got the same name — it's East Lake Golf Club. It's in the same property, similar square footage. But that's about it,” Schauffele said Tuesday.

Green's work was completed in a year, and Schauffele wondered if the Tour Championship might move elsewhere to give the sod a chance to grow, particularly the greens.

Green used 1949 aerials of East Lake in restoring the course that dates to 1904. Every tee, fairway, green and bunker was rebuilt. The bunkers around the 18th green are deep. The bunker left of the peninsula green on the par-3 15th has been removed. The eighth hole has been shortened. The 14th hole has been lengthen and now plays as a par 5. It's a lot.

“The bunkers are new, the grasses are new in the fairways, the greens are new, the grass on the greens are new, the runouts are different, the slopes are different. I think the only thing that’s the same are the directions of the hole,” Schauffele said.

“Whatever record I had is the past. I have no memory or anything really on any hole to go off of, not even a tree I could aim at that I used to aim at. It’s just that different.”

And so much is at stake. The Tour Championship is for the leading 30 players in the FedEx Cup, with the winner getting $25 million.

Schauffele has had the low score twice and matched the low score once, and he only has one trophy to show for it. That was in 2017, when he won the Tour Championship and Justin Thomas won the FedEx Cup from having more points.

Schauffele was asked if any part of him would have thrown himself in front of the bulldozer.

“One hundred percent, yeah,” he said. “My caddie, as well. He probably would have gone first.”

The format has changed to have a staggered start — Scheffler as the No. 1 seed will be 10-under par, two ahead of Schauffele when the FedEx Cup finale starts Thursday. Schauffele had the low score by three shots in 2020 ( Dustin Johnson was the top seed and won ) and he tied top-seeded Viktor Hovland last year.

That was tough to take. Losing the same course where he had so much success? That requires a little more time.

“It's just a new golf course,” Schauffele said. “Kind of a glass half-full guy, so I’ve played a lot of new courses this year that I’ve done okay at. And this is a brand new property.”

There might be some brand new strategies.

Scheffler and Schauffele were among those who contemplated hitting drives left of the par-5 18th onto the 10th fairway. The angle is better to the green, and the reshaped 18th fairway is severe enough that it's canters to the right and creates problems.

“It seems like a safer play to take all that out of play, hit it down 10,” he said. “The green is going to be pretty extraordinarily hard to hold anyways with it being a downslope and having a long club in there. It’s more you’re playing for birdies. There is less opportunity I think for eagle than there was before.”

The greens are firm enough that tour officials do not plan to use a back tee on the par-3 15th, played entirely over water with a longer club, because the green will be too hard to hold.

But they're all playing the same course for a lot of money. And no one is entirely sure how it will play out until the scores count on Thursday.

“As soon as I walked on the property, I was kind of shocked,” Hovland said. "It looks nothing like it used to. Seems like he’s basically changed every single hole out there. It was just kind of wild how much you can actually change the holes with not really moving holes around. It’s all kind of in the same place, but yet none of the holes look exactly the same.

“I could probably try to describe a person that’s never been here before what it used to look like, and it’s almost like you can’t imagine it,” he said. “It’ll be interesting to kind of get used to it, that’s for sure.”

John McNeill captures 2021 New England Senior Amateur

new england golf tour

MANCHESTER, Vermont – John McNeill has come up just short of winning several statewide and regional championships in previous years. But finally, over the past month, the 60-year old amateur has come up big.

McNeill, who is not affiliated with any public or private club, but is well-known on the Amateur Golf Tour of New England , followed up his victory in last month’s Senior Hornblower Championship by taking home the 24th New England Senior Amateur Championship at Vermont’s Manchester Country Club .

McNeill, the Dean of Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute , said passion and love for the game fueled his drive toward winning a championship.

“This one is a big deal,” McNeill said, who has played on the Amateur Golf Tour of New England since 1992. “I love playing the game, and I love the people you play with. The camaraderie with the seniors is great, and winning is just a bonus.”

McNeill, said his opening-round 4-under 68 on was his first bogey-free round in the past 30 years. What he didn’t know then was that’s all it would take to take home his first-ever New England Golf Association title.

He began the final round four strokes ahead of Connecticut’s Bob Murphy, Bill Hermanson , and Dave Jones , all tied for second place. Through 14 holes Wednesday September 15, McNeill stood at 1-under overall (3-over for round) and held a 1-stroke lead, but play was suspended at 1:11 p.m. for a dangerous situation (lightning). At 2:39 p.m., the second round was officially canceled, and scores were reverted to the first-round leaderboard.

“While we hoped to be able to finish the round, the weather forecast was unfavorable for the remainder of the day, and we were unable to complete play in a safe manner,” said Greg Howell , Director of Operations for the New England Golf Association. “We are thankful to the players for their patience on a very difficult day. We also appreciate the staff and members of Manchester CC for being gracious hosts.”

And while Mother Nature stood in the way of a full 36-hole championship, “In a way, I don’t care how it happened, I’m just glad I had a good round yesterday,” McNeill added.

Also taking home some hardware were Andy Congdon (Wyantenuck CC) and Bob Kearney (Bretwood GC, NH), who split the Super Senior Division (65-over) title by shooting 1-over 73 in the lone round that counted.
