Faint band of stars, gas, and dust stretches from left to right across the frame. This band is a representation of our galaxy as seen from space, edge-on. Colorful icons representing the types of objects Hubble has observed litter the frame: blue stars, orange spiral for galaxies, pink clouds for nebulae, yellow swirling top for exotic objects, and a green circle for exoplanets.

The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view.

Take a Nighttime Virtual Tour of Bryce Canyon National Park and See Some Magnificent Stars (Video)

This night to day tour will help you see the stars like you've never seen them before.

night sky virtual tour

If you’re feeling a little cooped up right now that’s okay — we are too. However, it’s important to remember you’re staying inside, social distancing, and limiting your in-person travels all for the betterment of your family, friends, and the entire world around you. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t “travel” and see the world right from inside your house.

Right now, destinations, museums, and cultural centers are doing their best to bring a little piece of virtual magic so everyone can stay safe — and entertained — while quarantining at home. And that includes truly stellar virtual tours of some of America’s best natural spaces thanks to the National Parks system.

Already, we’ve shared with you tours of Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii , as well as the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. And now, it’s time for you to virtually explore Bryce Canyon in Utah , too.

“The American Southwest is known for its red rock formations,” the tour begins. “But this towering stone jungle sets itself apart from the rest.”

Park ranger Kevin Poe takes guests on a “journey that spans day and night.”

“Defining this place isn’t an easy task because there’s no other place like it,” Poe says in the tour. “Bryce is home to earth’s largest collection of rock pillars known as hoodoos. It’s one of the fastest-changing landscapes on the planet.”

He adds, the night sky at Bryce is darker than almost any other night sky in America, which makes it a prime place to go stargazing with Poe. In fact, the first stop in the virtual tour is Bryce Canyon at night.

“Two-thirds of Americans can no longer see the Milky Way,” Poe explains as the virtual tour beams up into the gorgeous night sky. “But here, it stretches from horizon to horizon, almost like a glittering rainbow.”

While looking up, virtual guests can click and learn about the constellations that hover over the park and get in-depth explanations from Poe.

But, for those looking to explore more of the park in daylight that’s available too, including a gorgeous view of the park just as the sun sets below the rocks. Check out the entire tour, and all of the National Parks’ virtual offerings, here .

ONLINE - Virtual Skywatching: Exploring the Night Sky

graphic image showing planets stars and moon

Chicken Little was Right, The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling. Come find out why. We will use the "I" word to explore things like Comets (by making one), Asteroids and the dinosaurs and any upcoming meteor shower. Don't know what the "I" word is, then join us and find out. Learn fun and unique ways to leave the planet, journey to the stars and still be back in time for dinner...and so much more. Time machines provided by the Westminster Astronomical Society. This virtual program will stream on the museum's Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/GaithersburgCommunityMuseum Wayne "Skip" Bird is a NASA Heliophysics Ambassador, and presently the Outreach Director/Night Sky Network Guru for the Westminster Astronomical Society, an outreach fanatic (definition of fanatic: someone who will not change his mind AND will not change the subject). He is also a “MAD” Science teacher for TGIF a home school group and owner of skipbirdthesciencenerd.com. He is the world-renowned author of "Night Flying Astronomy Bird" articles (OK, maybe world-renowned is being a little modest), and the World's Greatest Dad -- he has the button to prove it, but enough about me. Astronomer Skip Bird takes us on a virtual tour of the night sky.

Between 1724 and 1730 Maharajah Sawaii Jai Singh II of Jaipur constructed five astronomical observatories in northern India. The observatories, or "Jantar Mantars" as they are commonly known, incorporate multiple buildings of unique form, each with a specialized function for astronomical measurement. These structures with their striking combinations of geometric forms at large scale have captivated the attention of architects, artists, and art historians world wide, yet remain largely unknown to the general public. Explore the observatories by reading more about them in the Learn section, taking a virtual Tour , or visiting the Gallery .

The Learn section, features a wealth of information about the observatories and the unique instruments Jai Singh created to observe celestial objects. But more than that, the Learn section also features projects you can do to learn more about the observatories and sky observation without a telescope.

The Tours section features panoramic virtual tours that work on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices!

And the Gallery presents curated collections of photographs, panoramas, 3D models, and animations in a portfolio format.

My Image

Celestial Mirror: The Astronomical Observatories of Jai Singh by Barry Perlus is a lavishly illustrated book about the Jantar Mantars. Personalized signed copies can be ordered from our store. More about this and Preview the book…

Recent additions: We are updating and completing many of the unfinished sections of the website. If you've been wanting to know more about the instruments and how they work, the Instruments section will be completed by March 26th. We’ve added a project to the Learn section that features panoramas customized to work with the free open source planetarium software Stellarium. Now you can view the night sky from the Jantar Mantar! More…

jantarmantar.org is a project by Barry Perlus, Associate Professor Emeritus in Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. It presents the observatories through a variety of media, making it possible to explore and learn about these historic sites through interactive panoramic tours, time lapse sequences, and 3D models as well as articles, drawings, and historic texts.
