OMD, aka Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, are the long established synth-pop Wirral duo Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. The band rose to fame with their fourth single 'Enola Gay', which became a major hit throughout Europe in 1980, then went on to achieve worldwide popularity in '81 with their third album 'Architecture & Morality', selling over 4 million copies. The continued to be active throughout the rest of the 80s, through the 90s, 00s and into the 2010s, still scoring hit albums and delivering unmissable live shows.

OMD, review: ‘mindless’ synth-pop has seldom sounded more creative, intelligent or daring

Forty years ago, OMD seemed to come from both space and the future – amazingly as this jubliant evening proved, they still do

Andy McCluskey of OMD at the O2 Arena

“Let’s do a song about the end of the universe,” beamed a jubilant Andy McCluskey, introducing History of Modern (Part 1) to an O2’s worth of equally delighted faces. “You’ve got to jump up and down now, to a song about the end of the universe.”

Plus ça change. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark now have almost five decades of serving up darkness, gallows humour and growing fear as catchy, danceable synth-pop bangers behind them. McCluskey and keyboard-toting co-founder Paul Humphreys are both comfortably into their 60s. And yet, in truth, not a lot has really changed for the pair, even as they delightedly noted that Sunday night was their first time performing on Greenwich’s grandest stage.

Last year’s excellent Bauhaus Staircase album took in granite themes of fascist creep and a looming existential shadow. As it grappled with these heavy thoughts, it did so to music that prodded at the possibilities of electronics while also maintaining something joyful and vital, with a particular strain of Britishness running through it. Even Professor Brian Cox’s remark that it was like Kraftwerk via Wirral could have come from almost any point in OMD’s long career. Familiar as all this is, OMD continue to sound like they’re coming from both space and the future.

“I assume you already have your dancing shoes on,” grinned McCluskey as he introduced Messages. Let’s talk about dancing, namely his. They are dad-shapes par excellence. You might point and laugh – and plenty have done, frequently – but clearly, nobody was having a better time than he. Plus, with the rest of the band static behind keyboards and drums, McCluskey is a singer with more space to fill than most. All the strutting and shaking merely made him a better frontman.

Not that he was the only thing to look at. While the band played on colour-changing lightboxes, behind them an enormous video-wall illustrated the songs with bright, verdant psychedelia (Tesla Girls), brutalist art (Bauhaus Staircase), mushroom clouds (the ironically effervescent Enola Gay) and Molly Ringwald (If You Leave, from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack). If it occasionally felt a little Tomorrow’s World-circa 1985, that’s because OMD were thinking like this back then, ahead of their time.

Given a big stage on which to breathe, new songs such as the dystopian-but-dazzling Kleptocracy sounded absolutely enormous. Meanwhile, older favourites – Pandora’s Box and the mischievous one-two of Joan of Arc and Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans), meanwhile, were a wall of sound that, in a modern age with more modern tech, sounded even more advanced than when they were first recorded. If the band’s Royal Albert Hall turn in 2022 was intentionally nostalgic, here even the oldest cuts looked firmly forward.

Throughout, McCluskey and Humphreys showed what a cracking double act they are. Between songs, the pair batted endearing, almost-awkward banter to one another as though this was a quickly thrown-together do at a working men’s club and neither had remembered to write a setlist. “That’s enough cultural intermission,” grinned McCluskey, following a trio of quieter, more sparse numbers. “Back to mindless dancing and synth-pop.”

Synth-pop, yes. Dancing, loads. Mindless? Never. Almost half a century in, OMD still have the OMG factor, and are as creative, intelligent and daring as ever they were. Plus ça change.

Recent tour reviews

So, as a person of a very similar age to the fabulous duo that is OMD, and having seen them initially over 35 years ago, this was always going to be in some ways an enjoyable walk down memory lane.

That said I'm sure I didn't view it with rose tinted spectacles, nor did all the rest of the audience.

It was a step back in time to 80s pop synth at its best, but also a concert that other far more modern artists would be proud to have performed (think PSB and the like).

Ably supported by a drummer and keyboard (and sax) player, Andy and Paul both performed as if they were still in their 20s and played a set that lasted over 90 minutes that passed in flash. Included were the majority of their greatest hits (much applauded by the 50 something (and 60 something) audience) and also some of their latest singles (again well received (its OMD, of course it would be well received)).

All in all this was marvellous concert, well performed (great voice and dancing Andy) and likewise well received by a very enthusiastic audience.

I will certainly watch them again when they next tour, as this concert rolled back the years for nearly all the audience.

This event made me an incredible happiness and seven days before Christmas which was my great gift of all these years

Especially when I slipped my hand behind the back of Andy McCluskey and him on my shoulder and I thought I was going to faint and it was still in a dream ....

Being a great French fan for many years at the age of 14 and now 53 years old it's crazy!

In addition I wanted for too long to meet my favorite idols and that evening and in addition, I had told them their new book 40 years "pretending to see the future" my name Dalida My last name was mentioned on the last page and that's why I went to Liverpool Caverne Club last December for "finally"! realize my dream for almost 40 years of love and that night I managed

Andy and Paul were very happy and delighted to have been there for them and especially Andy who told me little French words to put me at ease and I saw that he was very happy and after I asked him if I could still have a photo and also to Paul and they accepted and I slipped my ma behind Andy's back and him on my shoulder and Paul there was no more room for also put his on my shoulder

They were wonderful and so kind to me and me especially met my favorite idols

In addition to Andy I offered him a very beautiful picture believing that he would never recognize it and it was his greatest gift and Andy McCluskey will never forget this gift on behalf of his very big French fan and this evening was really successful and without regret.

OMD my idols and forever

Unforgettable evening and the only French to have participated in this event.

In addition I will very soon see them again in Paris February 16, 2020 in concert with VIP upgrades backstage all to be near them again and meet other members omd group.

omd tour uk 2022

OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) were formed in Wirral, Merseyside (UK) in 1978 by Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals). The band gained popularity throughout Europe with the 1980 anti-war song “Enola Gay”, and achieved broader recognition via “Architecture & Morality” (1981) and its three singles, all of which were international hits.

In 1989, creative differences saw Humphreys and other members form the spin-off band the Listening Pool, leaving McCluskey the only remaining member of OMD. The group returned with a new line-up and explored the dance-pop genre: “Sugar Tax” (1991) and its initial singles were hits in Europe. By the mid-1990s, however, electronic music had been supplanted by alternative rock, and both OMD and the Listening Pool disbanded in 1996. McCluskey later conceived pop girl group Atomic Kitten, for whom he served as a principal songwriter, while Humphreys formed the duo Onetwo alongside Propaganda vocalist Claudia Brücken.

In 2006, the band reformed with Humphreys and McCluskey working on material closer in sound to their early output; “The Punishment of Luxury” (2017) was the group’s seventh top 10 entry on the UK Albums Chart.
