About the Company

You are cordially invited to meet Peter Rabbit and friends!

Four favorite Beatrix Potter stories, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucestor, The Tale of Jeremy Fisher, and The Tale of Tom Kitten , come to life in this mesmerizing puppet show, complete with Potter’s original text and live, original music. Various instruments, such as mandolin, violin, toy piano, and banjo, create the score and melodies behind each story.  The set is filled with dynamic suitcases and trunks where levers are pulled and cranks are turned to reveal images that surprise and delight. Three charming performers interweave classic narration and puppetry with gentle interactive moments, recruiting the audience to join the adventure and encouraging young watchers to think about these iconic animal characters’ big emotions.

This handmade, lovingly crafted piece has a popular favorite at Chicago Children’s Theatre since 2018. Over the past 5 years, the production has performed an annual run at home during the holidays (under the name Beatrix Potter's Holiday Tea Party and A Snowy Day with Beatrix Potter & Friends ) and has toured to local schools, libraries, and cultural institutions, as well as toured to various cities in China.  2024-2025 will be the production’s first national tour across North America.

Critical Acclaim

"Witty, warm and welcoming to youngsters and their adults." - Chicago Parent

"Simple yet magical... The stories exude childlike excitement through the work of three polished and enchanting actors... the two-dimension Potter puppets come to life with humor, mystery and spirit.  The live music serves as a perfect underscore and often allows the ensemble to break into songs that heighten dramatic moments or transition actions within a story.  This energy, coupled with a simple and breathtaking scenic design (which centers on magical boxes), allows for a sense of old-school magic rarely seen in this digital age." - Headliner Chicago. Full review here .

"Through the use of hand-cranks and props, sound effects and song, each of these well-known characters came to life and their stories kept us all — old and young alike — entranced until the end." - Buzz Center Stage. Full review here .

"Children will be thrilled to discover their favorite stories coming to life before their eyes. The puppets sometimes even seem to grow larger, often breaking the fourth wall and joining the audience for some interactive fun. It’s all enjoyable and artfully performed. " - Chicago Theatre & Concert Reviews. Full review here.

By Trista Baldwin Adapted from The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter Directed By Anita Montgomery

Beatrix Potter’s timeless tale of Peter Rabbit is given a modern twist by award-winning writer Trista Baldwin. What does it mean to be a good bunny? If everyone thinks you’re a bad bunny, can you ever be good? In this moving and adventurous reimagining of Beatrix Potter’s classic tale, Peter Rabbit and his three sisters come together to tell a story of their very own.

Content Note:

Based on feedback from our initial previews, we have adjusted our audience recommendation.

This play is a reimagined version of Peter Rabbit’s story. It includes themes of sibling connections, grief, and facing your fears. There is discussion of the death of a parent and a stylized depiction of a larger-than-life, unseen villain created with lights, shadow, and sound. This may be intense for some audiences.

We invite you to view our summary and resources to learn more about this production.

Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature

October 13, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Members and Museum Pass : Free Not-Yet-Members: $18.50

Ever since Peter Rabbit first scampered around Mr. McGregor’s garden and onto the page in 1901, Beatrix Potter’s storybooks have captivated millions of children around the world. But the adventures of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, to name a few, are just one part of Beatrix’s enduring legacy.

Born in London in 1866, Helen Beatrix Potter was a town mouse longing to be a country mouse. She was passionate about animals and the natural world. Although this sparked her career as a world-famous author and illustrator, it also led her to become a farmer, natural scientist, and preservationist. Her determination to create a meaningful life for herself led her to significant achievements in both art and science. This exhibition follows Beatrix’s creative pursuits across illustration, scientific observation, narrative building, and preservation. Discover the boundless creativity, imagination, and curiosity of the woman behind the famous tales.

All works of art are by Beatrix Potter (English, 1866–1943), unless otherwise noted.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Alliance Theatre’s world-premiere musical Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale , a delightful family production on the Hertz Stage, October 14–December 23, 2023.

Beatrix Potter, born July 28, 1866, in Kensington, London is best known for her storybooks featuring the adventures of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, to name a few.

For the first forty-seven years of her life, Beatrix lived mostly in the same town house in Kensington. She came from a well-connected family—her ancestors from Lancashire had gained wealth and influence through calico printing and trade in luxury goods. By Beatrix’s time, the family had artistic and scientific connections near their London home, which gave her the opportunity and drive to expand her creative pursuits and scientific interests.

Sketchbook used by Beatrix, aged nine, pages dated March 19–21, 1876

Watercolor and pencil on paper, stitched V&A: Linder Bequest BP.741, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

Beatrix’s “irresistible desire to copy” began early in life. She had this sketchbook when she was nine and filled it with copies of illustrations and landscapes and flowers drawn from life. The pages shown here include her first known imaginative illustration, featuring hares who ice skate or battle with umbrellas in the windy weather.

Magnified studies of a ground beetle ( Carabus nemoralis ), August 1887

Watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil on paper   V&A: Linder Bequest BP.257, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

From the mid-1880s, Beatrix used microscopes to make nature studies. Later, she turned some into lithographs demonstrating insect life cycles for Miss Martineau, possibly Caroline, a family friend who lectured in natural science at Morley College. Beatrix visited the Museum of Natural History to study insect classification. As a woman, she found the male staff there frustrating. She said she alarmed them if she asked “the simplest question,” and with her natural shyness, she found, “if they take the line of being shocked it is perfectly awful.”

Spring, the Nuttery (garden), Harescombe Grange, Gloucestershire, ca. 1903

Watercolor and pen and ink on paper V&A: LC 4/A/1, Given by the Linder Collection, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

While staying with her relatives, the Huttons, in Gloucestershire, Beatrix kindled a lasting friendship with Caroline, a cousin who shared a similar passion for nature. They followed badger tracks and “poked around delightfully” for snails in the woods behind the garden of the Huttons’ home, Harescombe Grange, shown here.

The garden at Gwaynynog, Denbighshire, probably March 1909

Watercolor and pencil on paper V&A: LC 27/B/3, Given by the Linder Collection, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

Gwaynynog was the North Wales home of the Burtons—Beatrix’s aunt, uncle, and cousin. Beatrix resented having to sneak her pets in under her aunt’s nose, but both the house and garden inspired her tastes. The garden was “not tidy, [but] the prettiest kind of garden, where bright old-fashioned flowers grow amongst currant bushes.” It later became the setting for The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies .

Letters between Squirrel Nutkin, Twinkleberry Squirrel, and Rt Hon. O. Brown Esq. MP, undated, ca. 1902–1912

Ink on paper V&A: AAD/1996/12/2/v–viii, Given by Lucie Carr, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

Beatrix sometimes continued her stories beyond her published books by creating miniature letters supposedly written by the characters. In the ones shown here, Nutkin and his brother, Twinkleberry, beg the Right Honorable Mr. Brown, MP, for Nutkin’s tail back. They manage to annoy the distinguished owl, who complains that the tail almost choked him.

Early endpaper design, second version, first used in December 1903

Watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil on paper, mounted on card V&A: Linder Bequest BP.460, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

Beatrix believed that endpapers should be simple to “rest the eye” between the cover and the story, but in 1903, Frederick Warne & Co. decided that they wanted pictorial ones. Beatrix’s designs doubled as advertisement and branding—they changed from book to book as new stories and characters appeared. The second version shown here introduced the tailor mice and Squirrel Nutkin.

Monk Coniston Moor , drawn “7.00 morn,” November 16, 1909

Watercolor and pencil on paper V&A: Linder Bequest BP.1057, courtesy of Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd

Monk Coniston is a villa estate of over five thousand acres, made up of lakeshore parkland, farm and fell, and the designed landscape, Tarn Hows. Beatrix’s great-grandfather, Abraham Crompton, once owned Tilberthwaite Farm on the estate. Anxious that the estate would be lost to developers, Beatrix bought it in 1930, selling half to the National Trust and managing the rest until she bequeathed it to the charity.

Ye Olde England Tours

The original private London tours Co.

Beatrix Potter & Peter Rabbit Tour

This special private Beatrix Potter & Peter Rabbit Tour tour is for everyone who has ever been enchanted by the wonderful Tales of Peter Rabbit and his friends.  Created over 100 years ago by Beatrix Potter, she was a formidable and farsighted Londoner. Like many others before and since visited the beautiful Lake District and became enchanted with it. She then later worked hard to preserve its unique and delicate nature as a National Park.

Visit Hill Top, the Lakeland home of Beatrix Potter.

Having met you at your hotel or holiday cottage, your local guide and driver will whisk you away in a comfortable private car through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world on a journey that is very much a highlight of the day before arriving at the first Lakeland home of Beatrix Potter, Hill Top.

Hill Top - Home of Beatrix Potter, Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-duck. Beatrix Potter & Peter Rabbit Tour

Set in the tiny village of Sawley, Hill Top is a time capsule of this amazing woman’s life. Full of her favourite things, the house appears as if Beatrix had just stepped out for a walk. Every room contains a reference to a picture in a ‘Tale’. Beatrix used Hill Top and its surroundings as inspiration for many of her ‘little books’. You’ll recognise the rhubarb patch where Jemima Puddle-Duck laid her egg… the garden where Tom Kitten and his sisters played!

Due to its humble size, Hill Top can at times be a little crowded and entry is by a timed-entry system. It is also closed at times during the winter and on Fridays for conversation work.

If you like, we can then stop for a spot of lunch in an old local pub. Perhaps to very English tea and scones before we make our way on the short drive to the picturesque village of Hawkshead. Here we will visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery.

See the original artwork and notes for Peter Rabbit.

14606376_696287917191203_2660574454331536491_n Beatrix Potter & Peter Rabbit Tour

Once you step inside this charming old building to enjoy an exhibition of Beatrix Potter’s original drawings and watercolours. A visit here provides not just the chance to admire her delightful artwork but also the opportunity to learn more about her life outside the writing career which made her famous. Learn more about Beatrix as a farmer and conservationist, and how her legacy helped to keep the Lake District as we know today. This gallery has an interesting history too, because it was previously the office of Beatrix’s husband, William Heelis, plus it gives a rare opportunity to see inside one of Hawkshead’s old buildings.

Standard Adult Prices per person excluding entry fees (child prices available upon request).

“a masterful fusion of engaging storytelling”

North American Tour 2022

Back by popular demand.

“Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were – Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Peter….”

These famous opening lines of “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” have enchanted young audiences for over one hundred years with the exploits of a charming hero, who, going against his mother’s wishes, has adventures (and misadventures) in Mr. McGregor’s garden.

Beatrix Potter created an instant classic with the little blue-coated rabbit who we recognize as both boy and rabbit, wild and civilized, and who has become an icon of childhood since he first hopped out of the pages of a story book and into children’s hearts. Now, after premiering this production in 2015, Enchantment Theatre Company is delighted to collaborate with Frederick Warne & Co. and Penguin Books UK to once again present the authorized theatrical version of Peter Rabbit™ Tales.

Raves / Reviews

The result is a masterful fusion of engaging storytelling with the performing and visual arts, which appeals to all of the senses, stimulates intuitive thinking, and captivates adults and children alike.   –  DCMetro TheaterArts Everything about this world-class production is inventive and endearing; it fully captures the spirit of the beloved stories, the essence of childhood, and the imagination of the audience, both young and old. –  Phindie.com The entire play is narrated by a beautiful voice so that it makes everyone in the audience feel as if a Peter Rabbit book has dropped to the floor, popped open, and came to life in front of us. –  HipsterHenry.com I’ve never felt so cared for before….As an adult, I enjoyed the show as much as the children….The set was simple and yet like a life-size watercolor painting. The actors do not speak as the show is narrated by a prerecorded voice, so the show feels like you are reading the book. – MommyCall.com For  Peter  I thought the sets, costumes, and masks were exquisite. I have had very positive feedback from the schools and both audiences were captured by the production….I find the Enchantment Theatre Company consistently produces some of the highest quality theater for children that I have ever seen.  –John Healey, Executive Theater Manager, Weinberg Center for the Arts, Frederick, MD As always, Enchantment Theatre was efficient and professional, your personnel charming, and the performance reflected your name…enchanting.  – Laura Clavio, Purdue Convocations, West Lafayette, IN …stellar show. I am always impressed by the quality of [the Enchantment Theatre] productions and the beautiful and creative storytelling.  – Allison Rachele Bayles, Berkshire Theatre Group, Pittsfield, MA

Where Is Peter Rabbit?

Hop your way into the Theatre Royal Haymarket and delve into the musical, magical world of Beatrix Potter in  Where Is Peter Rabbit? , the critically acclaimed family show bouncing back into the West End.

Based on the beloved tales of Beatrix Potter, and featuring all your favourite characters from the books, Where Is Peter Rabbit? brings the stories to life on the West End stage with beautifully handcrafted puppets, a sprinkle of magic, and 14 delightful original songs (with lyrics by Sir Alan Ayckbourn). TV presenter Myleene Klass and Olivier Award-winning comedian Griff Rhys Jones lend their voices to the show.

The show is sure to fill you with delight as you watch out for the ferocious Mr McGregor, reach heady heights with Jemima Puddle-Duck, help with Mrs Tiggy-Winkle’s laundry, and accompany the mischievous Peter Rabbit on all sorts of adventures.

Devised by Roger Glossop and directed and choreographed by Sheila Carter, Where Is Peter Rabbit’s West End return follows acclaimed runs at the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness-On-Windermere, where it first came to life in 2016. Its West End premiere duly arrived in Easter 2019, before this summer’s run at Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Joy will abound as delightful dancing, an enchanting set, and a heart-warming story provide the perfect nostalgia trip – or an introduction to the series – for Beatrix Potter newcomers and fans alike. These famous stories have been handed down from generation to generation over many years, so for both the young and old, this is a show for the whole family to cherish and enjoy together.

Take A Tour of My Peter Rabbit Collection

You all know my deep love for Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit and hat follows mischievous and disobedient young Peter Rabbit as he gets into, and is chased around, the garden of Mr. McGregor. Beatrix’s beautiful illustrations and whimsical stories have captured my heart. I have amassed a collection of Beatrix Potter books, figurines, and other memorabilia celebrating Peter and his woodland pals.

From teeny-tiny copies of the classic tales to a figurine of Peter Rabbit enjoying carrots in his garden, each piece in my collection holds special memories and brings a smile to my face. I hope you enjoy exploring my collection as much as I enjoy growing it. This collection reflects many years and treasured memories of antiquing. The whimsical world of Peter Rabbit never fails to transport me back to those carefree days of childhood discovery. This collection has even inspired me to create special Peter Rabbit themed Easter baskets .

THE BEST SEASON! Back to clipping things from the yard & garden to cozy up the house with. Today it’s lilacs & soon it will be hydrangeas, but I think we can all agree that the best way to instantly cozy up any space is to bring the outdoors in & foraging in your own yard is a great [& free way] to do that. If you don’t have a yard or things you like to clip, ask a friend or family member. Sometimes for different seasonal items, like pinecones, I’ll ask my mom if I can rummage her yard because we don’t have many of those here on our little farm. Today I used the asparagus pitcher from my qvc line on top of the basket from the cozy line.. love how these two look together! It was my first time styling them by each other & they make the perfect match. What do you think?! SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS!! What are you clippin’ for the house this season?!

Politics latest: Uproar in Scottish parliament over use of nickname - as government survives confidence vote

The Scottish government has survived a vote of no confidence ahead of an SNP leadership contest, triggered by Humza Yousaf's resignation. Down in Westminster, Rishi Sunak has welcomed Boris Johnson's campaigning for Tory candidates in tomorrow's local elections.

Wednesday 1 May 2024 17:39, UK

  • Yousaf denies he was victim of plot to oust him
  • Starmer reveals he considered quitting
  • First illegal migrants bound for Rwanda detained
  • PM welcomes Johnson's campaigning for Tory candidates
  • Local elections:  All you need to know about this week's votes
  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler and (earlier)  Charlotte Chelsom-Pill

Douglas Ross, the leader of the Scottish Tories, just caused a ruckus in Holyrood after launching an attack on could-be SNP leaders John Swinney and Kate Forbes.

He begins by pointing to Ms Forbes' claim that she would want to hold an independence referendum within three months of a general election.

Mr Ross says she is "an even more radical nationalist" than Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf.

Turning to Mr Swinney, Mr Ross refers to him as "honest John".

This doesn't impress the presiding officer, who tells him: "We do not use nicknames in the chamber."

Mr Ross quips: "I thought it was on accuracy because it would be not-so honest John with some of the things we've heard recently."

He is told to apologise as an uproar sounds in the chamber, but he refuses twice.

Asked a third time, he says he is "very sorry" for any upset caused.

Mr Swinney has the backing of SNP heavyweights including the party's Westminster leader Stephen Flynn.

Humza Yousaf, the outgoing first minister, has dismissed suggestions he was the victim of a plot to replace him with Mr Swinney - leading to his resignation earlier this week.

Back to our political editor Beth Rigby 's conversation with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, in which the topic of the Rwanda scheme was raised.

Beth asks about reports Labour may retain the migration flights for some time in government until they negotiate different returns agreements with the EU.

He says: "No, I don't believe in the scheme.

"I don't think it will work. I know we have to stop the boats. I want to get going with our plan.

"Stop the boats on day one, which requires us to stop the gangs that are running this vile trade or to work with law enforcement across the borders to make sure that people are not getting the boats in the first place.

"And that's why I've already had discussions in The Hague (including with EU law enforcement agency Europol) about how quickly we can share data intelligence to do that.

"I'm absolutely determined to tackle this problem because the government has lost control of the borders.

"What I'm not going to do is flog a dead horse."

Our flagship weeknight politics show  Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge  will be live on Sky News from 7pm.

The fast-paced programme dissects the inner workings of Westminster, with interviews, insights, and analysis - bringing you, the audience, into the corridors of power.

Sophy will be joined by Northern Ireland Secretary  Chris Heaton-Harris  and former England cricket star  Monty Panesar , who's standing at the next election for George Galloway's Worker's Party.

And on her panel tonight will be:

  • Guto Harri , former aide to Boris Johnson;
  • Andrew Fisher , former head of policy for Jeremy Corbyn.

Watch live on Sky News, in the stream at the top of this page, and follow live updates here in the Politics Hub.

The conversation with Sir Keir Starmer now turns to the Hartlepool by-election in 2021, which was triggered after the resignation of Labour's Mike Hill.

The Conservative candidate Jill Mortimer won with 51.9% of the vote - and a swing from Labour of almost 16%

Beth Rigby asks if the Labour leader considered resigning that day.

He said: "I did, because I didn't feel that I should be bigger than the party and if I couldn't bring about the change, perhaps there should be a change.

"But actually, in the end, I reflected on it, talked to very many people and doubled down and determined… no, it's the change in the Labour Party that we need.

"And I do feel vindicated, because we are now a changed party."

Sir Keir adds the by-election loss was a "low point" and "it really hit me because my job was to turn around the Labour Party and take us from defeat to success".

He adds: "Losing hurts, and it should hurt in politics because this isn't about me, it is about whether the Labour Party can come back into government and serve working people so yes, it was a very, very low moment.

"It required me then to double down and turbocharge the change that we needed in the Labour Party, so in that respect, retrospectively it was a good thing because it forced that onward pace, but I am not going to pretend it wasn’t a really hard time."

Sir Keir Starmer has today reiterated that the Labour Party "need to show progress" in the local elections on Thursday, despite being around 20 points ahead in the polls.

He tells our political editor Beth Rigby : "We have to show progress, there is no doubt about that.

"We're a changed Labour Party, we have to show that people have the confidence and the trust to vote for this changed Labour Party."

The Labour leader says: "The polls don't predict the future.

"The polls don't change the country, but I'll be looking for that progress."

Beth asks what this progress would ideally be.

"We want to make gains, there's no doubt about it. We're here at Harlow, we need and want to take this council.

"The feeling if you talk to our activists - there is optimism on the ground."

He is then asked about mayoral elections, and what he believes his prospects are in the West Midlands, where Labour is up against Tory mayor Andy Street.

Sir Keir admits this will be "a fight", adding: "It's going to be very, very tight."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has today insisted the government's Rwanda scheme is a "gimmick" after it was confirmed police have raided the homes of the first people to be deported.

It comes following the recent passing of the Safety of Rwanda Act, which declared the central African nation safe following concerns raised by the Supreme Court last year.

Asked about this today, Sir Keir said: "The Rwanda scheme is a gimmick. We don’t support it and we won't be implementing it."

Starmer vows to 'take down gangs'

Sir Keir continued: "And the proof is absolutely clear. The prime minister did a victory speech on Rwanda a week ago on Monday.

"Since then 1,300 people have arrived by small boats. The legislation got royal assent last Thursday. Since then 900 people have arrived by small boats and 230 arrived yesterday, and just one person has gone on a voluntary basis to Rwanda.

"Nobody but nobody could think that this is going to work.

"The real work has to be done on stopping the boats by taking down the gangs that are running the vile trade in the first place, and that's why I have already been over to The Hague to talk to law enforcement about how if we are privileged to come into power we can tackle this from day one at cause and stop people from arriving by small boats in the first place."

The government has opened a consultation on the disability support system PIP (Personal Independence Payment), meaning eligibility criteria and other aspects of it could change.

Proposed changes come as part of the prime minister's pledge to reform the welfare system if the Conservatives win the next general election.

The criteria for getting PIP could change, as could the types of payments received by those who are eligible.

But what is PIP, who is able to get it, what is the government planning to change and who would be impacted?

Here's what you need to know.

Kate Forbes narrowly lost out to Humza Yousaf in last year's SNP leadership contest.

Ms Forbes has told Sky News she is considering entering the race again in the wake of Mr Yousaf's resignation.

The former finance secretary faced backlash during her campaign last year after admitting she would have voted against gay marriage in Scotland when it was made legal a decade ago.

The Free Church of Scotland member also told Sky News that having children out of marriage is "wrong" and something she would "seek to avoid".

However, the MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch stressed that "in a free society you can do what you want".

Ms Forbes had argued that "continuity won't cut it".

After losing to Mr Yousaf by 48% to 52%, she said: "If we are to continue to win elections, we need to continue to listen and maintain trust."

Ms Forbes turned down the role of rural affairs minister, which at the time was seen as a demotion.

Although her views on social issues remain unpopular with some of her MSP colleagues, she was one of the few SNP ministers who did not delete her WhatsApp messages during the COVID pandemic.

Ms Forbes would face resistance from the Scottish Greens, who have previously ruled out working with her.

SNP colleague Fergus Ewing is backing Ms Forbes, saying she is "head and shoulders" above any other potential candidate.

By Jenness Mitchell , Scotland reporter

John Swinney is a name that has kept coming up since Humza Yousaf announced his resignation as SNP leader and Scottish first minister this week.

He's received the backing of party heavyweights like Stephen Flynn and Ian Blackford, and was the first to announce he's giving "very careful consideration" to running for the leadership.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Swinney said: "I'm giving very careful consideration to standing to be the leader of the SNP.

"I've been somewhat overwhelmed by the requests that have been made of me to do that, with many, many messages from many colleagues across the party."

There and back again?

Mr Swinney stood down as deputy first minister following Ms Sturgeon's shock resignation in 2023.

The former SNP leader, who resigned from that post in 2004 following poor European Parliament election results, is clearly tempted to once again step into the spotlight following his year on the backbenches.

The MSP for Perthshire North, who was finance secretary under Alex Salmond's government, has the experience to hold the fort following Mr Yousaf's departure.

He ruled himself out of the 2023 leadership race, citing that he had to put his young family first.

Mr Swinney said he's got "lots of things to think about".

He added: "There's the whole question of my family. And I have to make sure that I do the right thing by my family, they are precious to me.

"I have to do the right thing by my party and by my country. So, there's lots to be thought about, and I'll give all of that consideration in the days to come."

The infected blood compensation scheme is to be extended to bereaved children who have lost one or two parents, Sky News understands.

This group has not been involved in the interim compensation scheme previously paid to victims of the scandal.

Tony Farrugia, who lost his haemophiliac father (and two uncles) to HIV/AIDs after being treated with infected blood products, described his meeting with the Paymaster General John Glen on Wednesday as "emotional".

Mr Farrugia said this significant moment "wasn't just about the money but that his loss has finally been recognised".

He will now be able to apply to the compensation scheme after Sir Brian Langstaff's report is published on 20 May.

You can read more from Sky News here:

Nominations have now opened in the SNP leadership contest to find a replacement for First Minister Humza Yousaf after he announced he was stepping down.

Senior figures have backed former deputy first minister John Swinney for the top job, while a smaller number of the party's parliamentarians have backed former finance secretary Kate Forbes.

Mr Yousaf has said he will stay on to allow a successor to be chosen.

How does the contest work?

The SNP's national secretary announced nominations had opened Monday at 11.59pm.

They will close next Monday.

Prospective candidates will need to gain the support of 100 members from 20 different SNP branches in order to qualify for the contest.

What happens next?

Whoever wins the contest will then need to be able to win enough votes in Holyrood to be elected first minister.

The SNP needs just two votes to secure an overall majority.

The most likely backers for the SNP would be the Greens, given both parties are pro-independence.

However, the Greens announced last week they would not support the first minister in a confidence vote after Mr Yousaf scrapped the powersharing agreement between the party and the SNP, which eventually led to his political downfall.

Rippling’s Parker Conrad on the company’s new round, new SF lease and, also, its newest critic

peter rabbit tour

Last week, TechCrunch broke the news that the workforce management software outfit Rippling was on the cusp of closing a new, $200 million round of funding at a hefty $13.4 billion valuation led by Coatue. We also reported that the round featured a separate, $670 million secondary component meant to give some of the company’s investors a bigger bite of the company, while letting Rippling’s employees — some of whom joined at the outset in 2016 — cash out some of their shares.

Rippling declined to comment at the time, but in an interview Friday afternoon, founder Parker Conrad confirmed our information, adding that the secondary component is actually a $590 million tender, with $200 million available for employees and $390 million available for seed and other investors.

The round, Rippling’s Series F, is also almost entirely an inside round. Coatue is an earlier investor in Rippling, along with other backers in this round that have been investing all along, including Founders Fund and Greenoaks. The only new member on the cap table is Dragoneer, a growth-stage investment firm in San Francisco.

Of course, we were interested in much more than Rippling’s new fundraise , so while we had Conrad on the phone, we talked turnover. We discussed the company’s new office lease in San Francisco (right now, it’s the second-biggest lease to be signed this year in the city). Conrad also shared why Rippling is relatively “free” of AI. You can hear that full conversation in podcast form ; if you prefer to read it, excerpts of that conversation follow, edited for length.

So why raise this money?

Honestly, it started out as just an employee tender . We wanted to find a way to get some liquidity for early employees, so we went to market, looking really to do about $200 million for employees that wanted to sell some stock. [But] we got a lot of investor interest, so we expanded it first to include a small amount of primary [capital] — mostly as a way to get more ownership for investors that were looking to buy more — and then beyond that, we ended up expanding into seed investors as well.

What does this secondary sale say about your plans to eventually go public? An IPO is a little bit in the distance?

I definitely think it’s a bit in the distance, but it’s not like a way of delaying [anything]. If anything, it’s probably nice if there are people who want to buy a house or [want more cash] because life happens. It’s great to relieve some of that pressure before you go public so that you don’t have tons of people selling as soon as they can in the public markets.

Is this the first time employees have been able to sell some shares?

It’s not. We did something in 2021. But it was smaller and the company was smaller, and it was a long time ago.

Do you worry about employees leaving after cashing out?

One of the things that we talked about internally when we launched it was, we said, ‘Look, the first rule of an employee tender is that you don’t talk about the tender internally or publicly.’ We don’t want to see anyone spiking the football, or something like that. And the second rule of the employee tender is, ‘see the first rule.’ This is a very private, personal thing, and I’m thrilled for everyone [participating]; if this makes a difference in [their] life, that’s great. But it’s not the destination. The game’s not over.

How do you feel about turnover more generally? Some people don’t like to see it; other managers think it’s for the best. Elon Musk seems to be a fan, given the rate at which he turns over his executive team at Tesla.

The executive team at Rippling has been remarkably stable for a long time. A lot of the people on the team are people who I originally hired for those roles. Some of them are people I have long work histories with, even before this company. And certainly I always like to keep people. I mean, every once in a while, there’s an early Rippling employee who leaves the company, and I find it always just emotionally really sad when that happens, even if the company is going to be fine and they want to do something else or, you know, in some cases just kind of hang out. On a personal level, that’s always very difficult for me.

You newly leased 123,000 square feet in San Francisco for local employees, who are now back three days a week. How did you settle on that policy, and do you worry about retention or hiring?

We just think there’s an enormous amount of value of people being in the office together. We were never a company that was going remote. When we went remote temporarily during the pandemic, we said, this is for three weeks, and then we’re going back to the office. Of course, it was unfortunately a lot longer than that, but we were back in the office as soon as we could be. I think it’s possible for some companies to be fully remote, but it’s sort of like playing the game on hard mode. I think it’s a lot easier if people can get together in person; you get a lot done.

In the meantime, workforce management software is super crowded. You’re going up against a company that you famously co-founded and ran , Zenefits. There’s Paycor, Workday, Gusto, to name a few . . .

The weird thing is that Rippling is not actually a [human capital management] HCM company. Everyone who has been building business software believes that the way to build the best business software is to build these extremely narrow, focused deep products. And I think it’s completely wrong. I think the way you build the best business software is to build a really broad product suite of deeply integrated and seamlessly interoperable products. Yes, we have a very strong HR and payroll suite, but we also have an IT and security suite; we have a spend management suite, where we do things like corporate cards and bill pay and expense reimbursements. Actually, we’re using the primary capital that we raised in this round to fund the R&D efforts for a new, fourth cloud that we intend to launch in a completely different area.

The classic example of a company that builds software in this way is Microsoft. Microsoft is like the OG of compound software businesses.

Speaking of Microsoft, what is your “AI strategy”?

We are a company that is relatively free of any AI products right now. There’s some stuff that we’re working on. But I am always very skeptical of things that are, like, super trendy in Silicon Valley. So I can tell you what [our AI strategy] is not. I’m super skeptical of these chatbots. I don’t think anyone wants to chat with their HR software.

I have to ask about a tweet related to our story about your new round. I saw [Benchmark general partner] Bill Gurley chimed in that “ Anti-focus ain’t cheap .” I wasn’t sure if that was laudatory or a dig. Do you know?

I assume given that it came from Bill that it’s a dig. And he’s not wrong that taking this opposite approach is expensive, particularly on the R&D side. If you look at Rippling financially, the thing that really stands out is how we spend on R&D. If you compare us to other HCM competitors — because you talked about the crowded HCM space — they spend an average of 10% of their revenue on R&D. Next year, Rippling is going to spend as much on R&D as [three rival companies] combined, and we have a much lower revenue footprint than the three. It’s definitely true that there’s a huge upfront investment phase in building what we’re building that obviously over time, as a percent of revenue, should come down. So he’s not wrong, but it’s a very explicit part of our strategy. What Bill might not totally understand is the benefit that you get from building software in this way; much higher upfront R&D costs [later result in] much higher sales and marketing efficiency.

Has Bill ever done business with you?

No, I’ve never met Bill. He’s sort of a constant, low-grade antagonist, but I’ve never actually met him.

I know he doesn’t get along very well with Marc Andreessen.

Then Bill and I have that in common. Maybe we should meet up and grab a beer over that particular thing.
