Five places to visit while you’re in Sindhuli

sindhuli nepal tourist places

Raj Kumar Karki

Saroj Yadav was apprehensive when he was making plans to visit Sindhuli. But when Yadav, who is from Dhanusha, landed in Sindhuli Gadhi on a recent morning, he was instantly bewitched, he said. “My choice for a brief hangout turned out to be just right,” he said. The gadhi is nestled on a hilltop and enjoys sunshine all day long. Surrounded by forests of rhododendron and kafal trees, the spot if perfect to just sit back, and reflect, says Yadav.

Yadav was in Sindhuli with his circle of friends. “I had to convince my friends for this trip and I would be responsible if the trip didn’t turn out as expected,” he said. “But once we cut through the serpentine road and reached the gadhi, we knew we were in for a pleasant surprise.”

Another of Sindhuli’s draws for Yadav was its climate. Even though the district shares its borders with the Tarai, the climate is moderate and the air is fresh. The gadhi even overlooks the mountains towards the east, something Yadav’s home district lacks.

Sindhuli has become a sought after destination for nature lovers in the Tarai—particularly from those in districts such as Sarlahi, Mahottari, Rautahat, Siraha, Bara and Parsa—and even from India. While previously, Sindhuli gadhi was more popular as a picnic spot, it has recently gained popularity for much more, especially since it was inducted by the government as one among the 100 destinations for Visit Nepal 2020 .

Here, we look into the five foremost places that deserve your attention while you are in Sindhuli.

sindhuli nepal tourist places

Sindhuli gadhi

Sindhuli gadhi holds a special place in Nepal’s history. This is the ancient fort where the Gurkha soldiers won over the soldiers from the British Empire in 1767. Hence, this fort today stands as a symbol of bravery of Nepali soldiers.

Sindhuli gadhi lies about 20km east from Sindhuli Madi, the district headquarters, and about 150km from Kathmandu. In case you are travelling from Kathmandu, you have to take an uphill trip from Khurkot, about the same distance. The road is blacktopped right up to the historic fort which is located at an altitude of 4,648ft from the sea level.

Sindhuli gadhi sees a flurry of picnic-goers all week round, said Khilraj Devkota, a local school teacher. “The place is popular because of its moderate climate and excellent views of the mountains,” he said.

The fort has also recently added facilities such as good road leading up to the fort and clean drinking water in order to develop it as a major tourist destination, said Khadga Bahadur Khatri, Mayor of the Kamalamai Municipality. “Monuments and documents have been picked up from the ruins and are conserved, and one can read historical material dating to the period of the battle,” he said. “It is a matter of pride for any Nepali to witness the place where our forefather fought against imperialist power so bravely.”

Selfie hill

As the walls of social media began to get peppered with selfies, Sindhuli took the momentum a step further: it christened a hill after it, the selfie hill. No wonder the hill has been attracting selfie aficionados ever since. The hill is located along the BP Highway, near Dhungre Bhanjyang. According to Chet Bahadur Magar, a local, there is a flat ground near the bhanjyang which overlooks the serpentine road and rolling hills. Those driving along the road were increasingly seen stopping their vehicles, charmed by the beautiful landscape, to take photographs. And over time, that was how the hill came to earn its name—selfie danda.

Bhadrakali Temple

Bhadrakali temple lies nearby Dhungre Bhanjyang, enclosed by dense trees. Legend has it that Bhadrakali temple in Kathmandu is an offshoot of this temple. The temple is popular for animal sacrifice rituals. The temple was established during the battle between the Gurkha soldiers and the British troops in the 18th Century. According to Chhatra Bahadur Shrestha, a local, many stone inscriptions were recently unearthed from the temple. The annual victory anniversary of the battle kicks off after worshipping the Bhadrakali goddess in the temple.

The serpentine road

The road along the BP Highway is a wonder in itself. The highway constructed with aid from the Japanese government looks serpentine, especially from Pipal Bhanjyang to Dhungre Bhanjyang, and awe-inspiring. Of late, the road has not just attracted curious visitors but also ambitious film crews seeking to find a perfect shot in the road. The road is enveloped by green forests, further helping the cause for Nepali filmmakers. “It is wonderful that the road itself has transformed into a tourist destination,” said Ishwar Basnet, professor at Sindhuli Multiple Campus. “Many visitors stop by the road to have it in their photo’s background.” The road is also considered architecturally important.

Bhadrakali Community Homestay

Once you’ve made your trip around Sindhuli, you won’t have to go too far for a good rest and food. The Bhadrakali Community Homestay in Dhungre Bhanjyang will be welcoming you. The homestay offers good food and residence at an inexpensive rate. The homestay provides local food such as fried maize, gundruk and local chicken curry, among others. The homestay lies a few kilometres from Sindhuli gadhi. There’s a rodhi ghar, where dance is performed every day, set up to entertain the guests.

HOW TO GET THERE: There are public vehicles available in Kathmandu that lead you directly to Sindhuli.

WHERE TO STAY: There are hotels in Sindhuli Madhi, the district headquarters, but your best bet would be to stay at Bhadrakali homestay or at Chetana Village Resort, nearby Sindhuli gadhi.

WHAT TO EAT: Among the regular Nepali foods, try pickles made of sisno, geetha and bhyakur, along with delicacies made of maize, millet and buckwheat.

DETOURS: Siddhababa Temple; Kamalamai temple; Panchakanya Pond; Hariharpur Gadhi Durbar Square.

Budget: About Rs 5,000 per person for a two-day stay.

Sindhuli Gadhi, a historically significant fort, lies in the Sinduli district of Bagmati Province. The place is famous for the battle between the Gorkha army led by Sardar Banshu Gurung, Bir Bhadra Upadhyay, and the British military, headed by Captain Kinloch.

The British troop was defeated by Nepal army in November 1767. The remains of the fort are present in a demolished state that takes you on a mini-ride to the 18th century. The British army left behind several weapons that were seized by the Nepal army. With unconventional war tactics like unleashing the hornets using nettles, among several other strategies, Gorkhas did not let British soldiers conquer Kathmandu valley.

Recently, the place is popular among tourists and wanderers. The mention of the fort is a popular Nepali song – ‘Sindhuli Gadhi ghumera herda’ has explained the beauty of the fort and the area around it. You can find Nepali flags in the fort that reminds us of the impressive historical victory. Each year, Sindhuli Gadhi Memorial Day in November is celebrated in the place to provide a tribute to the excellent victory of the Nepal army over the British.

A small place that can be explored within a day, Sindhuli Gadhi is near Kathmandu, and is accessible via road transportation. The road to Gadhi from Kathmandu is entirely maintained. Gadhi is one of the exciting places in the region, which can be explored in a short time. The site is mostly visited by people heading towards neighboring cities as Gadhi is few kilometers from the highway.

Sindhuli Gadhi can be a one-day trip if you are around Kathmandu. You can visit the fort and learn about the history of Nepal. People usually stop there for a quick snack and drink and refreshments. The place is famous for the local oranges.

Catch Wheels

A Group of Motovloggers from Nepal

Ride to Sindhuli Gadhi – A Historical Fort & Tourist Attraction

Our Catch Wheels team had been wanting to ride on the roads of Sindhuli for quite some time now since the roads of Sindhuli is famous among the bike riders for its pleasant highway ride. So, for this episode of Motovlog, as a weekend getaway, we went to observe the beauty of Sindhuli Gadhi and its highway.

Sindhuli Gadhi is around 120 km from Suryabinayak, Bhaktapur. Sindhuli is one of the renowned tourist attraction in central Nepal that carries an important historical background. The place commemorates the victory of the Nepali troops over the East Indian Army in the year 1767. It was the first defeat for the British troops in South Asia.

On 26 th May 2018, Saturday, our whole team decided to meet at Lokanthali and as planned, we met and headed towards Sindhuli Gadhi. There were total 8 bikes and 12 riders in the journey. All of us were very excited about the ride and were enjoying our ride along the highways of the valley. Since there were no off-roads, our ride was pretty smooth and relaxing.

Riding on the highways along a river bank was so soothing and with the scenic view by our side, we reached Sindhuli Gadhi. Sindhuli Gadhi Ghumera Herda —a popular song that incorporates the beauty of Sindhuli—sure does increase the excitement as one reaches Sindhuli. The Gadhi is surrounded with stone walls. There is an ancient well in the area too (which is dry at the time being); people believe the well was used for imprisoning the adversaries to death in ancient time. Though the place carries an important historical background, we could see it being changed and there is not much left to see in the area except for the devastated fort itself and some ancient tiny monoliths. The Sindhuli Gadhi fort tour is very rewarding for those with great interest in history. We had a short photo session at the fort and also took some amazing drone shots at the highway.

So, all in all, the Sindhuli Gadhi ride was awesome for us. The highway was pleasing and the view with each turn we took was breathtaking. Our ride was super fun! Looking at the green trees on the hills, the rolling terrace farming, serpentine road and a warm weather—all of these made our journey a memorable one. A group ride with friends filled with fun and excitement made the journey even more meaningful!

We strongly recommend all the riders in and across the nation to definitely roll their wheels in Sindhuli Gadhi. The mesmerizing fresh roads will surely make your journey to Sindhuli a one to remember.

Here is the full MotoVlog of our ride to Sindhuli Gadhi. If you enjoyed watching our Motovlog, consider subscribing to our YouTube channel to see more from us.

Happy Riding!!

Welcome to Sindhuli Gadhi & Janakpur: Historical Gems of Nepal

History of tourism in sindhuli gadhi.

Sindhuli Gadhi, an important historical fortress, represents the rich heritage of Nepal. The region's tourism history is interconnected with its past, dominated by the famous battle of 1767 AD. In this battle, the Gorkha troops heroically defended against the British forces, leading to the eventual signing of the Sugauli Treaty. This victory has turned Sindhuli Gadhi into a significant tourist destination for those interested in Nepal's valorous past.

The promotion and development of tourism around Sindhuli Gadhi have been gradual. The Nepalese government and various cultural organizations have been working towards preserving and showcasing the historical importance of this site. The construction of the Sindhuli Madhi-Martadi Highway has made this site more accessible, subsequently increasing tourist footfalls.

History of Tourism in Janakpur

The history of tourism in Janakpur is deeply tied to its religious and cultural significance. Janakpur is renowned as the birthplace of Goddess Sita and the place where Lord Rama and Sita were wed, making it a coveted destination for pilgrimage and spiritual tourism.

Janakpur has been welcoming visitors for decades, if not centuries. As the site of the ancient Mithila Kingdom and home to the Janaki Mandir, tourism in Janakpur has evolved from purely spiritual visits to include cultural and heritage tourism. The initiation of the Janakpur Cigarette Factory in the mid-20th century brought an influx of workers and travelers, further spotlighting Janakpur as a destination.

Latest Tourism Trends

The latest trends in tourism in these areas include a growing interest in ecotourism and sustainable practices. Visitors to Sindhuli Gadhi and Janakpur are increasingly looking for authentic cultural experiences. As such, local homestays, traditional cuisine exposure, and cultural programs are gaining popularity.

In addition to cultural tourism, the push for digital presence has made information about these destinations more accessible to a global audience. Social media has played a significant role, with travelers sharing their experiences online, further promoting these sites.

Experience Sindhuli Gadhi and Janakpur have also adapted to this trend, offering virtual tours and online resources to cater to the increasing demand for electronic access to travel experiences, particularly heightened by the recent global situation.

The celebration of festivals such as Vivaha Panchami, the re-enactment of the wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, continues to attract both domestic and international tourists alike, perpetuating Janakpur's status as a vibrant cultural hub.

Sindhuli Gadhi and Janakpur tell the tales of heroism, spirituality, and cultural grandeur. These destinations preserve the historical essence and cater to the modern-day traveler, blending the ancient with the contemporary. The rise of eco-friendly tourism and the blend of culture with technology are set to shape the future of tourism in these emblematic locales of Nepal.
