Backed by a long history as an oil and cattle town, the arts and culture scene is still going strong in Wichita Falls. Joseph Kemp and Frank Kell, brothers-in-law, helped grow the city for decades, and today you see them commemorated at museums and other landmarks. I feel a bit nostalgic, knowing that my daddy was born here in 1929 when Granddaddy worked a stint in the oil fields before moving back to the old home place. Sheppard Field, an Army Air Corps training facility, bolstered the economy and reopened as Sheppard Air Force Base in 1948, a significant training center for the Air Force and NATO.

In April 1979, a devastating tornado struck the southern part of the city, destroying 20 percent of the homes and businesses, killing 45 people, and injuring more than 3,200. The resilient city recovered within 3 years, enjoying an early 1980s boost in the oil business, then suffering a late-decade slump. You’ll find historical surprises, lots of green space, art attractions, and foodie destinations that will keep you busy. Here are some of my favorite places to visit in Wichita Falls.

Things To Do In Wichita Falls

I love the many art attractions, green spaces like Lucy Park, wineries and breweries, and historical museums in Wichita Falls, an hour and a half drive northwest of Fort Worth.

The Mane Event

One of the first things I noticed were beautifully painted horses all over town. Over 70 fiberglass Painted Horses decorated by local artists are scattered across Wichita Falls, decorating businesses, parks, and facilities throughout the city. Proceeds of the Mane Event support the Youth and Adult Programs of Leadership Wichita Falls.

Lucy Park –178 acres in the city’s center – was donated in 1963-64 by Mrs. Frances Ann Dickerson in memory of her mother, Lucy O’Neil Saunders. Located in the elbow bend of the Wichita River, the park boasts a natural setting filled with giant cottonwoods, pecan trees, and other native plants. You can hike or bike the 1.7-mile concrete trail that circles the park and is the west starting point for the city-wide Circle Trail System.

You’ll find playgrounds, basketball hoops, a swimming pool, an 18-hole disc golf course, three volleyball courts, two restrooms, and plenty of picnic tables. The old log cabin in Lucy Park is available for meetings, parties, weddings, or family reunions.

Wichita Falls Waterfall

The Wichita Falls Waterfall was built in 1986 and dedicated in 1987, replacing the falls that washed away in a flood over 100 years ago. The 54-foot multi-level waterfall backs up to Lucy Park via a mile-long hiking trail.

River Bend Nature Center

The River Bend Nature Center, a 20-acre education facility, connects people to nature with a 7,000 square foot meeting pavilion, a natural forest, and a wetland trail. The most popular attractions are the Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, the United Children’s Garden, and the River Bottom Forest Trail. The best time to visit is during the spring and summer when flowers bloom and things have greened up.

Littlest Skyscraper

The Newby-McMahon Building, the World’s Littlest Skyscraper , is a small Neoclassical red brick building in downtown Wichita Falls. It stands 40 feet tall and 18 by 12 feet. This con investment scheme, constructed in inches instead of feet, was a great embarrassment to the city. It was featured a hundred years ago in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and the nickname has stuck ever since. Today it’s a Texas Historic Landmark.

Local Murals

Cleopatra’s Eyes at the corner of 8 th and Burnett is one of a dozen giant murals painted on the sides of buildings across Wichita Falls. You’ll see a gorilla clutching a beautiful woman, a parrot staring at a startled man, or a train by artist Ralph Stearns.

Jenny To Jet Exhibit

Located in the Wichita Falls Regional Airport, the Jenny to Jet Exhibit commemorates the “Jenny” biplane, Call Field, and the U. S. Army Air Corps training camp during World War I. It features a T-38 jet, a jet engine from an A-10, and displays about Sheppard Air Force Base. See the Model-T Troop Carrier, Model-T Staff Car, WWI uniforms, equipment, and multimedia displays.

Museum Of North Texas History

The Museum of North Texas History features local history including handmade naval vessel replicas, a Native American tepee, and Nat’s Hats, a display of the trade-in hats that customers from Wichita Falls left at the store when they purchased a new Western hat. See stories of the city’s remarkable women and an after-hours Art Walk featuring Tom Roberts. Learn about the Sweeney family and their contributions to the town and see the Emil Hermann exhibit and ten of the artist’s portraits, plus a portrait of a prize-winning Hereford bull, Larry Domino, owned by J.S. Birdwell.

The Ward Building

The Ward Building downtown is the home to the original Zales Jewelry Store, established by Morris Bernard Zalesfsky (Americanized to “Zale”). He learned the jewelry business from his uncle Sam Kreuger, opened his first store with his brother, and grew the company to the world’s largest jewelry retailer. Today you’ll find the Karat Bar & Bistro , where you can enjoy locally sourced dishes made from scratch and classic Prohibition-style cocktails.

Kell House Museum

The Kell House Museum tells Wichita Falls history via the Kell family history. One of the most historically significant homes, the museum features original family furnishings, historical costumes, fabrics, and furnishings, plus guided tours sharing the history of the Kell family. The museum is currently under renovation, restoration, and preservation.

P’s Crazy Car Museum

Featuring more than 40 renovated classic cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors, see an ever-changing collection at P’s Crazy Car Museum that is free to the public when you donate to two of Patterson Auto Group’s favorite charities. You may also inquire about purchasing any of the vehicles. The car of the month is the 1969 Excalibur SS Phaeton.

The Wee-Chi-Tah Sculpture

This life-sized legendary sculpture features the story of a Comanche family crossing the Wichita River – a Comanche woman, her child, two braves, a colt, and their horses in the rocks and flowing water. As the legend goes, the woman is testing the river’s depth, and answers, “it is waist deep,” which is translated Wee-Chi-Tah. 

Hotter’N Hell Hundred

One of the nation’s oldest and largest cycling events is celebrating its 40 th anniversary this year. The Hotter’N Hell Hundred features more than 13,000 riders from across the world who spend 4 days of challenging riding in Wichita Falls. You still have time to register!

Dr. White’s Sanitorium – Old Insane Asylum

Opening its doors in 1926, Dr. White’s Sanitorium offered 13.5 acres with walking paths and a stable with horses for patients’ outside activities in the sunshine. The property lay idle for years, with most of the land sold, leaving the old hospital on 1.5 acres. The building was bought for back taxes and restored for $250,000.

Today, the property is a private home with three bedrooms, a living area, two bathrooms, a laundry, a kitchen on the second floor, and one giant open space on the lower floor. The place is haunted, the owner says, but not by evil spirits. They often hear a young woman call out, “hello!” The family used to hear children laughing and playing together. They bought Christmas presents and left them out for the kids and haven’t heard them since. The Historical Society of Wichita Falls issued a Preservation Award. You can drive by and take pictures, but they ask that you respect the no trespassing signs.

With a background in European truffle making, she began making bonbons and truffles back in Texas and started a business in her kitchen in 2014. Try her Texas Rita Bark, Texas Turtles, and The Odd Duck Coffee Truffle.

There are many main trails at the Wee-Chi-Tah Off-Road Trail system with a length of 12 to 13 miles and levels that range in difficulty. These trails also have man made obstacles, punchy climbs, and switchbacks.

There are two main trailheads found at 502 Wichita St or at the Texas Tourist Center on Central Freeway.

3. River Bend Nature Center

River Bend Nature Center is an educational facility in Wichita Falls, Texas.

One of Wichita Falls’ best outdoor attractions is Lake Arrowhead State Park. 300 acres of land, this state park has numerous activities for children and adults: bird watching, disc golf, and water skiing are just a few.

9. World’s Littlest Skyscraper

The World’s Littlest Skyscraper is a Wichita Falls landmark in the heart of Historic Downtown. It’s an example of beautiful Art Deco architecture and was built in 1930 to serve as a bank headquarters for First National Bank, which eventually became Security State Bank. Today it serves as offices for small businesses like lawyers or accountants.

The interior of the building has not been changed and is a great example of how people saved money in 1930 by using natural light rather than electricity. It’s one of only three buildings that are still connected to their original sky lights, which we call “skylights.” The other two being First National Bank (also known as Security State Bank) and Cain’s Ballroom.

The World’s Littlest Skyscraper is open for tours Monday-Friday from 0830 to 1730. There are free guided group tours on the hour, which last about 45 minutes with a presentation of Wichita Falls history in each room.

10. Kell House Museum

The Kell House Museum is the oldest house in Wichita Falls and was built in 1878 by John Thomas Kell. The family moved to this location from Tennessee, because there were several other people with the last name of “Kell” living nearby.

It’s a two-story wood frame home on Courthouse Square (it was at the corner of Seventh Street and Grant Avenue before moving to its present location). It was a single family home until about 1940, when it became the official museum for Wichita Falls. The house is open for tours Monday-Friday from 0830 to 1730 with group tours available on the hour or by appointment.

11. Professional Wrestling Hall Of Fame & Museum

This is a great place for those who want to celebrate their passion for pro wrestling and see the history of this region. The museum has been open since 1998 and was inducted in 2009 into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Hall Of Fame And The museum is a hope, dream and goal for every pro wrestler to have their professional wrestling career recognized. You can find the hall of fame in a building that was specifically designed to house it and has plenty of space for permanent exhibits.

There is also enough room so that temporary exhibitions such as celebrity appearances, wrestling matches or movies can be showcased with ease. The museum has everything from memorabilia from WWE stars like Ric Flair to costumes from Lucha Libre.

The founders of Wichita Falls Brewing Company wanted to create something for everyone in their community and they succeeded by creating a comfortable atmosphere where you can enjoy all types of food and beer.

If you are a craft beer lover, this is the perfect place for you! They have an impressive selection of beers that covers everything from hoppy IPAs to fruity sours. This brewery has been open since 2013 so they still feel new but their atmosphere feels like home with plenty of seating areas for everyone who visits.

They are open Tuesday-Sunday and they have a great happy hour every day from 11 AM to 12:30 PM with discounted appetizers, $12 pitchers of beer or house cocktails for just $11!

The City was once regarded as ideal cattle ranching and agriculture country, and this influence can still be seen in Wichita Falls today. In short, the city had a prosperous agricultural past.

Besides, this city gets its name from the lovely waterfalls that can be found here, and yes, the waterfalls are beautiful.

Lake Arrowhead State Park is one of the most beautiful portions of Wichita Falls. In short, when it comes to natural beauty, this location unquestionably provides the best of both worlds.

With two miles of walking routes inside, it’s ideal for some mild trekking or running in nature.

The park is far enough away from major roads and highways, so there is no traffic noise here.

Similarly, this park offers a fantastic adventure that will make your day worthwhile. Some of these include catching fish from a pier (catfish, crappie, and bass) and hiking scenic paths.

There are other outdoor activities, such as swimming in the park’s lake, in addition to the physical routes that lend themselves to trekking or jogging.

In case you do not want to swim but want to have fun on the lake, the lake is large enough for kayaking and other small boats.

More excursions include horseback riding, disc golf, camping beneath the stars, and an incredible view of the waters.

Camping is a lot of fun here, thanks to the dusty atmosphere and mostly enclosed locations.

Before retiring for the night, take a relaxing swim in the lake.

The winery features a tasting area that can be visited by appointment only. Here, friendly personnel will explain how the wines are blended and created, and you may try the local goods fresh from the barrels.

The products are stored traditionally in barrels, and the warm staff serves them fresh out of it.

If you enjoy the taste of fine wine, you must visit Wichita Falls Vineyards & Winery.

3. Museum of North Texas History

If you enjoy seeing ancient objects preserved in glass cases, such as old maps, the iron lung, old military items and fatigues, and so on, here is the place for you.

This museum was constructed to commemorate the history of the Texas region, as its name suggests.

The museum, which is spread out across 14 rooms, is maintained by friendly volunteers. These volunteers are knowledgeable and passionate about educating tourists about the historical significance of this part of the country.

There are also dynamic displays of period relics for you to appreciate.

The museum comprises the oil and gas industry’s documented history.

Antiques from the Second World War and the Wild West and Native American collections are among them.

Another persistent reminder of the awful wrath of wars is the military collection from the civil wars waged in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The eccentric Nat’s Hats room is a major draw.

This collection contains about 500 charming cowboy hats dating from 1953 to 2006.

Above all, it is such a fantastic museum with great depth of detail in its many interesting artifacts and exhibits. Make sure you don’t miss it.

Castaway Cove Waterpark is best for younger kids to have a blast and for grownups to kick back and relax.

This waterpark is one of the most exciting locations to visit, with numerous thrilling water slides and other attractions, including a relaxing journey down the Lazy River ride.

It is owned by the city of Wichita Falls, which makes it very well maintained. The prices are reasonable as far as water parks go.

There are flume slides to attempt if you’re feeling brave and don’t mind creating a splash, or you may choose something a little more relaxing, like the Lazy River ride.

However, there are other great attractions. One of these is the rhythmic wave pool, which simulates sea tides and gives you the sensation of being on the sea. It’s an enjoyable experience.

Pirate’s Plunge is the chief attraction, with an 11-meter drop followed by a 360-degree loop.

And the storm tower? The Storm Watch Tower is an exhilarating adventure water slide with an enclosed corkscrew tube that propels you into the light from the darkness within at a fast speed.

There are volleyball courts and playgrounds where you can have fun on dry land.

The safety of all the park’s visitors is always a major concern of the operation. So go have a little fun at Castaway Cove!!!

The confidence trickster promised to build a skyscraper in Wichita Falls, and it has been known as the World’s Littlest Skyscraper as a running joke since its completion.

Despite causing much embarrassment when it was originally presented many years ago and its small size, it has stood the tests of time.

The 40 feet tall Newby-McMahon Building, also known as the World’s Littlest Skyscraper, is recognized for its characteristic red brick structure and cast-iron decoration

On the second and third floors, there are antique boutiques where you may get rustic items.

The 48 steps that rise to the top offer a stunning perspective of the city’s downtown region.

This house still appears to be much as it did when the Kell family lived here. Antique furniture, historical relics, and ancient costumes from bygone eras are among the items on display.

It is not only a museum with original Kell Family artifacts, but it also showcases the distinctive 1909 constructions of local builders.

There is also information about the cultural and historical significance of the house and the wider area in general.

41 Best, Interesting Things to do in Wichita Falls

A couple of hours south of Oklahoma City and Dallas, Wichita Falls is a big town with a small-town feel. The city, set in Northern Texas, is an unusual combination of old-world charm with a modern flair. Since we love finding unique, quirky things about any place we go, it was easy to find a host of interesting things to do in Wichita Falls.

A Little About Wichita Falls

We were recently empty nested and we moved to far western North Texas. We immediately loved the people and places in the area. There’s still a hint of the wild west about the city, but that is set amongst historic homes, famous landmarks, a wide array of art, and global annual events.

The town has over 100,000 people, but it feels intimate. It has an old downtown area that is working hard to regain relevance and the town is home to the shortest Interstate Highway in the world. There are miles of walking trails throughout the city, covering nearly 29 miles roundtrip. Some follow the bend of the Wichita River while some go through parks and near neighborhoods.

The people in the Wichita Falls area are what make it so great, for example, going into a gas station or a quick food place, the kid behind the counter will be cheerful, polite, and make your visit enjoyable. We travel enough to know that’s not the cultural norm of most areas, but it is still normal in the Wichita Falls vicinity.

Oddly, the base is cosmopolitan; outsiders are the norm, but the city of Wichita Falls is tribal. The locals are extremely nice and accommodating but when you grow up with all of this cool stuff as your ‘norm’, you don’t always think to ‘spread the word’ to newcomers. Now, six years in, we hope to offer some discoveries and popular attractions you must experience for yourself.

1. The Wee chi tah Sculpture (Grandkid Friendly & On the Cheap)

Make your way to visit the Wee chi tah Sculpture. Local sculptor Jack Stevens recreated a scene of a family of Native Americans crossing the Wichita River with their horses.  It’s significant in several ways- the river is just yards from the piece, the family and horses have symbolic themes, and the interactions between all the figures are thought-provoking.

The horse in the rear of the group belongs to the woman who is at the lead of the group testing the waters. Her horse is nursing her colt, and the woman is encouraging her young daughter to proceed to safety. The men are armed with bows, arrows, and spears still mounted on their horses.

The public can physically interact, the mother’s horse is saddled and looks like the public can hop on for pictures. They are made of metal, however, so every time we have been there it has been way too hot for comfort.

There are legends about a Comanche group naming the area something akin to “waist-deep” as depicted in the sculpture, however, it is more likely the name of the people who lived in the area for hundreds of years.

2. Wee-ch-Tah Mountain Bike Trail

Right off to the side of the Wee-chi-Tah statue is also the trailhead to one of the trails made especially for off-road/mountain biking. The scenic trail wanders in a twelve mile loop, some of which follows the banks of the tiny Wichita River.

3. Kemp Center for the Arts

The Kemp Center for the Arts is home to the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra as well as the Arts Council. As the heart of arts in Wichita Falls, they have a beautiful outdoor Sculpture Garden as well as indoor galleries.

The Kemp Center is also home to permanent exhibits of art, as well as ones that change, all highlighting the products of local and regional artists.

Because of the beauty of the building and grounds, it is a perfect place to host special events such as theatre, musical, and dance performances. The historic building also provides a great meeting or event venue as well as a place to attend a variety of art classes.

4. The Ohio Street Bridge (On the Cheap)

From the vantage point the sculptures, you can also see the north end of the old iron bridge. It is closed to traffic now, but passable on foot or bicycle. This stately structure spans not only the waterway but hiking, cycling, and nature trails as well. 

The historical significance of the bridge is impressive. The extant span was finished in 1911 and closed to automobile traffic in 1972 but will be with us for its architectural aesthetic and pedestrian endeavors for a long time to come.

Looking north from the bridge center is the now-defunct former grain elevator converted to an also now-defunct indoor climbing and repelling facility. This is absolutely one of our favorites!

5. Endurance House

Even if you don’t run or cycle, this bicycle and running accessories store is a “must” for those of us over 55. There is a certain point in everyone’s life when you refuse to settle for low-budget toilet paper, liquor, and footwear.

That being the case, they are set up to conduct video analysis of your gait and stride and use that information to recommend the shoe that is best matched to your need. 

Leah has always worn good shoes, but these professionals helped her to find even more comfortable ones. They also carry a few shoes for leisurewear that have become her go-to sandals. No more foot pain!

The staff is friendly, informative, and very knowledgeable about not only shoes but bicycles too. If you ride scores of miles a week, ride competitively, ride for exercise or transportation, and even if you haven’t ridden in years but think you might ride sometime in the next few months, they have you covered.

The store stocks, orders, tunes, repairs, and customizes bicycles, and provides safety equipment and safety gear.

6. River Bend Nature Center (Grandkid Friendly)

This wonderful environmental education center is amazing! Two of our granddaughters from New York visited us over the summer and they took part in some amazing summer day camp classes and created happy memories they will carry for the rest of their lives. 

Filled with fun attractions, there is something for the entire family. Follow this link to learn more about RBNC .

One of the favorite attractions is the Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. Within the 7,000 square foot glass enclosure, the Conservatory is a living laboratory of nature. Along with local wildlife such as quail, prairie dogs, and turtles, they also have over 100 native plant species.

The RBNC also has over 15 acres of scenic trails and wetlands, a library, a gift shop, and a children’s garden. The River Bottom Forest Trail is one of many walking trails set throughout the city.

The summer educational events for children and adults, the Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, the walking trails, and the rest of the 20 acres are worth the nominal ($4.00-$6.00) entry fee.

7. Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame (Grandkid Friendly & On the Cheap)

One of the many unexpected gems downtown is the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame! Click the link to learn more about the PWHF . They are expanding from the 8th street entrance and moving to the third floor of Big Blue in order to better display and showcase the thousands of pieces of memorabilia. Admission is by donation. 

The PWHF has an annual induction and it gets bigger and better every year. Whether you are a wrestling fan or not- this is a must-see for free.

8. Local Farmer’s Market

Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 7:30, am to 1:00 pm, you will be delighted at the local and fresh produce, foods, and wares available under the pavilion.

The Wichita Falls Farmers Market hosts vendors like a local winery, ceramics, jams, cakes, baked goods, kettle corn, and more. 

We have bought several types of fresh fruits and vegetables there and they were really great. Depending upon what is in season, the options change throughout the year.

Bring a cup of coffee and browse. I bet you will find something you need. One tidbit of information- the venue is available for lease to individuals and businesses for events. Come on out and enjoy!

9. Lucy Park (Fun on the Cheap)

This park is free and it is unbelievable! Reserve one of the two large picnic shelters for up to four hours for only $15.00! This is a great place for a group to meet up for reunions and celebrations on the cheap.

There is so much more to the park than just picnic areas, though. There are many playsets, swings, jungle gyms, and more scattered over the 178-acre park of manicured space.

The park offers many many family-sized picnic tables and lots of those have BBQ grills at the ready. Along the way, you can also follow and play a disc golf course.

Old Cottonwoods and pecan trees and other indigenous hardwoods coincide with colorful annuals and landscaped vistas.

Fly Kites, sit on a blanket in the sun, walk your dogs, or stroll the 1.7-mile trailhead concrete walking path in order to bring your stress level down to zero. Or for a more competitive activity, the park offers 2 sand volleyball courts.

Within the park, there is also a log cabin that can be reserved for meetings or group events. The only requirement to reserve it, however, is that you must be a resident of Wichita Falls. You will have to provide some personal information as well as bring proof of residence such as a water bill if you would like to reserve the cabin.

Spend 30 minutes or all day. Explore the falls or the river.

10. Village Bowl

The smells of oiled hardwood floors, the shoes, and the sounds of bowling balls and pins are all here. The place is spotless. Have a Coke or something else from the snack bar. The place is open late, make a night of it!

We have gone there with a big group and the staff was so great to work with. Everybody had a great time and there was a little bit of a nostalgia feel to the place.

It is not like some of the huge, new, glitzy bowling alleys. Village Bowl reminds us of the local bowling alley when we were growing up… only cleaner and without the smell of stale cigarettes.

11. Painted Horses

Better known as Mane Event , Wichita Falls is home to 70 or more uniquely painted fiberglass horses dotted around the city. Each of these pieces of art has a story- some are memorials to donors’ family members, some memorialize events in local history or lore, and some are created to bring awe or a smile.

Leadership Wichita Falls’ class of 2007 brainstormed this project which raised over $150,000 to date, benefitting several significant local help organizations. You or your family or graduating class can commission one of these fabulous projects today.

Even if you can’t afford to commission one of your own, it is fun trying to find them all around town. How many can you find? Leave a comment!

12. Hotter’N Hell Hundred

The brainstorm was born from a conversation within a local cycling group dreaming about a fundraising event when a young member said,

“Let’s host a hundred-mile bicycle ride.” 

“When can we put this thing on?”, an older member asked. 

“Late August.” 

The senior member tried to chastise him, saying, “Son, it’ll be hotter ’n hell.”

And so it is.

And so the event that brings 13,000 committed cyclists to town every year for four days of events was born. Wichita Falls is the hottest place we’ve ever lived (it’s also the coldest, by the way). Known by several titles, Triple H is one of the insiders’ nicknames for this annual phenomenon. Aside from a 100-mile ride, there are tons of other cycling-related events during four of the hottest days on the calendar. 

Leah and I rode in this once so far and it is a standout event in our long list of experiences! Although the title includes 100 miles, there are several other, shorter distances that riders can choose.

We chose the 25 mile one and kind of regretted not doing one a little bit longer. We lucked out and had a cooler than normal day for our ride and we could have ridden more given the temperature.

However, we didn’t know at the time and the 25 miles route was still plenty long to give us the total experience.

If you are traveling in, be SURE to book your stay a year in advance if you want a room or an Airbnb closer than OKC, Ft Worth, or Abilene. People come from all over the country for the event and every hotel and rental are always booked solid. You could bring your tent and join the many people that actually camp around the MPEC parking lot.

13. World’s Littlest Skyscraper (a.k.a. Newby-McMahon Building)

Whether this is an embarrassment or an object of pride to the city is up for debate. It is cute and unpretentious, none of us can dispute that. It’s also just the sort of quirky, interesting place that we love!

Local legend says it was proposed to be a skyscraper that would satisfy the newly wealthy boomtown’s need for professional office space, but a swindler proposed a 480 inch, four-story structure instead of a 480 foot, 40 story monument to capitalism. The scale apparently went unnoticed by the buyer until it was too late.

The building is over a hundred years old, has survived fires, tornadoes, neglect, and even scorn, but it has a place in the hearts and novelty photos of locals and visitors to the city alike. There will always be cities that continue to compete for the title of the tallest skyscraper- only Wichita Falls can boast of having the littlest!

14. Wichita Falls RV Park

You will be greeted by a pair of raring white stallions when you pull into this destination RV park. You will be minutes from several “must-see” places like Lucy Park and River Bend Nature Center.

This park is a step back in time! It is easy to get to, clean, easy in and out, and funky. Aside from being perfectly manicured, the collections of statuary and novel-kitschy lawn decor are impressive. For older travelers, bring your walking shoes and do a thorough browse of the entire park and you will have smiles and awakened memories of many things from decades ago.

15. Back Door Theater

Plan your trip to WF in order to catch a show. This non-profit community theater has produced over 601 Broadway-style shows through the years,

They have a main stage and a dinner stage. Dinner shows are an extra $16 for the dinner, and it is BYOB, but both are optional.

In 2020 the venue suffered a great deal of damage due to a flood, but the resilient staff and volunteers adapted and overcame. 

The theater also has a wonderful school for students of all ages. There is a summer academy as well as classes that are conducted throughout the year. I have had lots of students go through the academy as well as the classes and they loved them!

16. O’Reilly Park (Grandkid friendly & On the Cheap)

This gem is one of many neighborhood parks in town. We like to bring a picnic lunch and sit at one of the several first-come, first-served picnic tables or even the covered pavilion.

Granddaughters love playing on the slides, climbing sets, and even the tunnel to the covered wagon! The park is also part of the surrounding walking trails and is a great place for a mid-walk stop. Much of the area is shaded and even in the scorching heat, it was pleasant.

17. Museum of North Texas History

Located in downtown Wichita Falls, exhibits on ranching, Medical, military, oil and gas, local families, and more are all on permanent display here. This museum not only showcases local lore and memorabilia, it also highlights Texas legends.

Of special interest, is the collection of 500 hats formerly owned by area citizens; the display is ‘Nats Hats.” Nat was a western wear store owner who kept his customer’s old hats when they bought a new one. Character at its finest!

18. Midwestern State University 

This local college produces graduates who are able to make their way in the world. It is known as the University which helps more young people from challenged backgrounds enter the middle class than any other. 

The campus is beautiful with old, stately buildings and grounds. Overlooking beautiful Sikes Pond, Sikes Center is available for rent for luncheons, banquets, etc. I’ve attended numerous events there and it has always been nice.

Additionally, the campus is set in the middle of neighborhoods full of historic homes, which become an even more beautiful site during the Christmas season. Train rides are available for tours then and it’s a perfect spot to bring the whole family for a holiday treat.

19. The Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU

While visiting the campus, be sure and visit the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas.

The Museum houses over 1600 pieces of American fine art as part of their permanent collection. The pieces are dated from 1677 to the present. Additionally, the museum hosts a rotating collection of different exhibits.

20. MSU-Burns Fantasy of Lights 

Dusk to 10:00 PM, from Thanksgiving to December 26 every year, the lawn at MSU transforms into a Christmas wonderland. This magical, interactive event began as one family’s lawn display and has become a cherished festive tradition. 

It started in the 1920s with a single blue bulb on a tree on the Burns family’s front porch on 10th Street.  The family added to and maintained the original display through 1971. After Mrs. Burns passed, the family donated it to MSU, which has carried on the tradition since. 

Besides the lights and exhibits, there is also a trolley ride that goes through the surrounding neighborhoods for a trip through houses that are amazingly bedecked with the Christmas spirit. Also, if you are lucky as we were, you might get to see some of the local school children singing Christmas Carols.

21. Kell House Museum & Heritage Center

The history of the area is told through the eyes of the Frank Kell family. The home was built in 1909 and retains its stateliness and significance. Period rooms and family treasures from the estate of Frank Kell are on display. This home is a great place for all history buffs to visit.

Outside, the immaculately landscaped gardens offer a serene area to pause and relax. The venue may be reserved for weddings and other events.

22. The Falls

Although they are actually considered part of Lucy Park, the Falls themselves are visible and accessible from the street, as well. Like the area, the Falls are changeable throughout the year.

Most of the time they are absolutely beautiful and clear. Other times, the water is as red as that flowing in the Red River just a few miles north, a vivid reminder of the land and water in the area.

And for a brief period of time, the falls may actually be frozen or temporarily turned off because of weather.

23. Elvis Always Gifts & Collectibles

Absolutely packed with memorabilia, every Elvis fan owes it to themselves to go by and browse through the shop. They have almost every type of figurine, poster, mug, record, etc. you can think of!

Even if you aren’t in the market for a piece of Elvis memorabilia, you will love seeing all of the multitudes of items in the store.

24. Wichita Theatre and Opera House

In 1908, the Wichita Opera House opened its doors. Over the next 30 odd years, the Opera House held numerous theatrical performances and had many special appearances by fairly well-known actors and actresses.

The building was remodeled in 1939, at which time it re-opened as one of the movie theaters. Since then, its purpose has come full circle and it now provides theatrical entertainment once again.

25. Alley Cat Vintage Mercantile

There are numerous antique shops in downtown Wichita Falls, and all of them are worth a visit. This antique store, however, is in a class of its own,

The store has a huge array of antiques, as is to be expected. Along with all of the old bottles, machinery, glassware, and furniture, they also have a large collection of vintage clothing.

The most exciting part, for me at least, can be found on their 2nd floor. With over 7,000 old vinyl records, their collection is one of the biggest that I have ever seen.

26. Depot Square Historic District

Covering about 6 city blocks, the Depot Square Historic District was designated to honor the past glory of the oil boom years in the Falls area and its significance in the history of the town.

The area includes city landmarks such as the Kemp-Kell building (Now the Holt building) and the Ward building, built by the founder of the Zale Jewelry Corporation.

Along with the brick-paved streets, there is a farmer’s market, the Old Wichita Falls Route Building, headquarters for the Kemp and Kell railroads.

Just down the road, you can find the World’s Littlest Skyscraper in one direction, the Wichita Falls Public Library in the other direction, and the nearby Wichita Falls Railroad Museum.

27. Maniac’s Mansion

Maniac’s Mansion is a must-see for anyone who is young at heart. The owner wanted to create a place where people could play arcade games and eat cereal all day.

For a flat entry fee, you can play any and all of the arcade games in the room, no need for quarters or tokens. It’s a great place to hang out with friends, play alone, or have a party.

Things to do in Wichita Falls

Cheesy and a little bit ‘touristy’ but grandkid friendly, 28. castaway cove waterpark.

Castaway Cove is a commercial enterprise open during the summer and has every way imaginable to cool off. This one is a little more touristy, but it is also a favorite attraction for grandkids!

We have actually never been to this particular one, there are always other places to go and things to do when the grandkids are visiting, but I have had lots of friends and students that have highly recommended it.

With the wave pool, swimming pool, wading pool, kid pool, and water slides, water parks are always one of the best things to do to keep cool in the summer.

29. Chuck E Cheese

Who can resist a chance to take on the grandkids in a Skee-ball challenge when you might be able to buy tickets!!! Hey folks, we don’t have to wait for a birthday to make a fun day happen. 

We’ve noticed it’s usually us grandparents who usually pick up the tab here and we also noticed they sell beer and the pizza doesn’t suck. Coincidence? You decide.

30. Urban Air

Another chain, but one our grandkids really love! The indoor trampoline ‘park’ is not just for kids, either. With all different types of areas for jumping, sliding, and climbing, Urban Air has something for everyone.

It is definitely not On the Cheap, but if you are looking for something to do indoors that will wear out the kiddos, it will do the job!

There is a waiver that parents/guardians must sign before you can enter the park, but you can go online and do that ahead of time.

Also, along with the entry fees, everyone has to have Urban Air socks; no personal socks are allowed. You can wash and reuse the socks on subsequent visits, but know ahead of time- you will have to buy socks there in order for everyone to enter.

Interesting things to do in Wichita Falls

Cool places to eat, 31. scott’s drive-in  .

Put Scott’s on your calendar for lunch! Located at 4701 Old Jacksboro Highway this is like stepping back into my childhood; order from the car, but don’t expect a Sonic drive-in experience. This is a leisurely-paced establishment and although the food is better than today’s fast burgers, the wait time is a little longer.

When we were there, an older gentleman in a white dress shirt, paper burger-hop hat, and long blue apron was the only one waiting on cars. The food was definitely worth the wait, however.

There were 12 car lanes and they were all full most of the time while we were there. This is obviously a place the locals know about and don’t want the word to spread too much.

If you’re ready to go back in time, drive up, park under the awning, and push the red button. We had bacon cheeseburgers, fries, and onion rings and shared a large Root Beer and the total was less than $25.00.

32. El Chico

Friends, if you would like to experience an authentic late 1960s restaurant and step back into your childhood like at Scott’s Drive-In, come to this place too.

The menu is barely touched over the decades. The decor is probably original to the franchise opening and so are the booths and tables. 

The place is old, nevertheless, the food is good and comforting. The kitchen and waitstaff are professional and attentive. And the prices are still low.

33. Gutierrez Family Restaurant

Yes, baby! Sketchy neighborhoods after dark and amazing Tex Mex can coexist. The reviews are amazing because the food is amazing. Of course, you can have your margaritas frozen or on the rocks.

Don’t leave 8th Street without stopping in and experiencing the Red Taco. I can’t describe it, but I eat a lot of them.

The ambiance is something you have to experience to understand. The booths are tiny, cramped, and uncomfortable. The food is cheap and unique, but good and filling.

Oh yes, the house-served tortilla chips they bring out to every table with all the salsa you can use cannot be found anywhere else. These chips alone are definitely worth a trip from Oklahoma or even Washington state.

35. 8th Street Coffee House

Downtown Wichita Falls is packed with really cool places to go and fun things to do. 8th Street Coffee House is one of those that provide both along with fabulous food. This coffee shop is one of the best places to grab lunch and they offer a wide variety of specialty offerings. If you are looking for interesting, delicious food, this is the place to come.

On the weekends, they have live music in the evenings. You can eat while listening to great, local, live entertainment.

They have recently moved up the street, as the former building would get VERY snug quickly. It’s that good!

You can browse classics just to enjoy or you can browse to buy! 

36. P’s Crazy Car Museum

Patterson’s Crazy car museum is the place to go to see rides from the past, vintage cars, and so much more, You can spend hours looking at the approximately 25000 square feet of exhibits. It’s free. It’s attended by local historians and it is unforgettable.

Do NOT be fooled by the uninspiring exterior! We were completely blown away by the museum. And if you don’t already know who Loyd Ruby was, (Ruby Flyover) then you have definitely come to the right place!

Also, the museum is ONLY open on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., so plan accordingly. It is absolutely worth carving out some time to visit!

37. Lone Star Muscle Cars

If you’re in the market for the classic or custom car of your dreams, or just love to look at them, head west on Kell, and just as you leave town, on the right, you will find Lone Star Muscle Cars.

If you want a one-of-two Saleen Mustang, a split window ‘63, or just that car you had when you were 19 and wish you’d never sold, it’s here.

This place is a business, not a museum, so I would be courteous of their time, but the staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

Wichita Falls Brewing Company and Hook and Ladder Winery

On your way to the World’s Littlest Skyscraper, be sure and stop into Wichita Falls Brewing company for a craft beer in a place with a cool vibe. Or go across the street to Hook and Ladder for a glass of wine. Both offer a great tasting room where you can sample their fine selections.

Wichita Falls Regional Airport

Wichita shares its municipal airport with Sheppard Air Force Base, an integral training facility for not only the United States but our NATO Allies as well. Our allies send members of their armed forces to Sheppard so they can participate in our top-notch training program.

A visit to Wichita Falls Regional Airport not only provides an easy way to enter and exit the city, but it also is home to a small museum of aircraft housed locally by our armed forces. If you are a fan of historical aviation, it is definitely worth the short drive to get there.

Lake Arrowhead State Park

And just a few miles away, you can visit Lake Arrowhead State Park. As with many state parks, Lake Arrowhead offers fishing, skiing, camping, hiking, disc golf, and horseback riding.

Wichita Falls, Texas is often a city that people drive through on their way to Dallas, Fort Worth, or Oklahoma City. Sitting right on the Texas-Oklahoma border near the Red River, my hometown deserves more than just a drive through. Even though I haven’t lived here in twenty years (hard to believe!), the kids and I visit family often, and there are so many things to do in Wichita Falls. It seems there is always a new destination or restaurant to discover in Wichita Falls!

For a smaller city of only 100,000 residents, it is busy with music, art, restaurants, and family-friendly activities. The art scene is alive in Wichita Falls, Texas with multiple art museums, historic homes, and lots of the live events including the symphony, theater, and ballet – not to mention the downtown area. There are so many new places to see, live, and eat!

I’m proud to say that this Texoma town has so much more to offer than when I was growing up. Whether you’ve lived here in Texoma, are new to “the Falls”, or are just passing through, take time to stop at one of these unique places. If you’re looking for fun family things to do in Wichita Falls today, here’s your must-see list!

Museum of North Texas History

Let your inner child – or actual child – come out at Maniac’s Mansion arcade in downtown Wichita Falls where you can play non-stop video games for only $8 per person. This is a place we would have hung out in high school if it had been around!  My favorite surprise to find at Maniac Mansion? Getting to show off my Mario Brothers’ skills from decades ago! If you’re not cool enough for Mario, go camp out at Pac-Man, Galaga, and Tetris while others compete at Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero.

Need a special snack? Let me introduce you to the cereal bar where you can purchase a bowl of cereal from the enthusiastic staff. You can go even bigger with toppings like cerup (cereal syrup), whipped cream, and sprinkles. If you’re not into cereal, there are extra snacks, candy, and drinks for sale.

Block off the whole afternoon, Mom. You just found one of your kids’ favorite things to do in Wichita Falls.

Visit the Sound Garden at Lucy Park

People of all ages love to bang and make music. The Sound Garden at Lucy Park is a great place for a seniors’ group, school trip, or just a break from walking around the park. Bring the kids to drum along and discover that making music out in nature is even more fun than being noisy at home. This would be a great place to stop on your north Texas road trip and let the kids get out their wiggles and energy!

Close to the Lucy Park pavilion, the Sound Garden is a great location for resting in the shade or enjoying a picnic. With one of the playgrounds located right there, let the other kids go climb all over the play equipment while your little musician keeps experimenting with the instruments.

HINT: The larger the group, the more fun the experience! With more than a dozen drums, chimes, and xylophones to choose from, there’s something for all your friends.

Disc Golf and Playgrounds at Lucy Park

When you’re done making music at the Sound Garden, follow the concrete paths to play a round of 18-hole disc golf at Lucy Park. Spread out among the pecan and cottonwood trees in a grassy area, this easily marked course is the best place to play in Wichita Falls.

Forgot your discs at home when you visit Lucy Park ? Pull out the scooter for the 1.7 mile concrete trail or head to one of the three playgrounds to let the kids move. With several pavilions available, there are plenty of options for a picnic or an hour for the parents to sit in the shade. Make sure you don’t leave Lucy Park without stopping to let the kids see the ducks and geese at the small pond.

Visit the Falls in Wichita Falls

Are there falls in Wichita Falls? Although not the original, four-foot historic waterfall, today’s man-made waterfall is easily seen when driving through town. But when was the last time you took the time to get up close? The paved path is a further continuation of the Wichita River Trail that will take you back toward the Wee-Chi-Tah statue.

After you’ve explored Lucy Park, head back to the entrance (past all the ducks!) to park for a ten minute walk. This easy, paved trail follows along the Wichita River until arriving at the manmade falls. Stand at the bottom for a quick picture, or hike around and up to experience truly how much water is pouring over the top. This is also a great way to see out across downtown and toward the highway.

Bike and Hike the Wichita Falls Trails

As the home of the annual Hotter’n Hell Hundred bike race, Wichita Falls has its share of biking enthusiasts. During the last decade, more than 20 miles of paved trails in Wichita Falls have been completed to make a circle of the whole city. Check out this Wichita Falls trail map to plan your next trip.

Head to one of my favorite views out over the city on the Wichita Bluff Nature Area trail . Park either on Loop 11 or Seymour Highway, and head out for a great view over the city. This paved trail has a slight elevation change, but it’s easily walked, biked, or scootered on your next Wichita Falls family activity.

Wichita Falls Museum of Art

Located on the campus of Midwestern State University, the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas is a great little art museum whose exhibits rotate several times a year. With only a small suggested entrance fee of $5, this museum is a great way to introduce the kids to art without a bit time or financial commitment

Check out the MSU art museum schedule online to see about adding a workshop or sponsored concert to your Wichita Falls trip.

Located on Sikes Lake, park at the museum and plan to take a couple of laps on the paved walking path while looking for birds and geese. You could even cross the road to explore the beauty of the Midwestern State campus. It’s another great place to get those scooters out for the kids.

World’s Littlest Skyscraper

If you have a world-record obsessed kid as I do, you’ll enjoy seeing this Ripley’s Believe It or Not ‘s “World Littlest Skyscraper.” The name still sticks today. This five minute stop to see Wichita Falls’ Littlest Skyscraper is a lesson to us all. Still standing, currently with some shops, plan to drive by and laugh as you read the kids the story of the misunderstanding and deception that lead to its size. However, this fact has recently been debunked as sneaky marketing from the developer…. so you decide!

PS: I’m intentionally not showing you a photo. It will be more fun this way!

Wee-Chi-Ta Statue and Historic Bridge

Wee-Chi-Tah tells the story of Wichita Falls’ origins. This life-sized bronze sculpture shows a Comanche family crossing the Wichita River. According to legend, she declared the water “waist deep” which translates to the name of the statue. Although it’s located in a less-traveled part of town, take ten minutes to stop and read the story.

The historic Ohio Street Bridge makes for some unique photographs as the Wichita River passes below. If you’re biking through Wichita Falls, this trail meets up with the Wichita River trail.

Ramble and Shop in Downtown WF

Looking for a fun souvenir to remember your walk around downtown Wichita Falls? Head to Ramble and Company to check out what this local lady is creating. This local store started as a business for the owner’s small-batch, self-printed T-shirts and has grown into a fun destination of unique, vintage-inspired gifts. 

Grab a special Texas-themed super-soft T-shirt or sticker for your water bottle. This is a fun little store in downtown Wichita Falls that is beautifully displayed with something for everyone.

Visit the Wichita Theatre

Whether you’re looking for children’s theater shows, an adult play, or dinner theater, the Wichita Theatre in Wichita Falls always has a show waiting for you and your family to enjoy in downtown. This historic theatre, which has been around for more than a hundred years, provides family-friendly shows and gives Wichita Falls’ smallest performers a place to perform.

Located in downtown Wichita Falls, the Wichita Theatre is located close to some great restaurants. If you’re wanting to find something a bit more fancy, plan to head across the street to the associated Stage 2 Dinner Theater in an intimate setting, up-close with the local actors.

River Bend Natur e Center in WF

You don’t have to drive to big cities for an amazing nature experience for kids. River Bend Nature Center in Wichita Falls is your family’s new favorite educational experience. Although there is not an official zoo in Wichita Falls, the Learning Center and Nature Conservatory at RBNC are places your kids will want to dawdle.

• Touch live animals with staff guidance. 
• Examine hundreds of rocks, insects, and specimens.
• Look closely with digital microscopes. 
• Play with tables of STEM toys. 
• See the free-roaming quail and watch the prairie dogs. 
• Look for hatching chrysalis in the butterfly garden. 
• Go find the giant toad, rabbits, and turtles. 

Make sure you leave time to hike the nature trail outside or dig for fossils in the Children’s Garden or buy a special treasure in the Gift Shop. Check the RBNC online schedule , so you don’t miss their special events and kid programming. Love the animals? Make sure you check out the Wild Bird Rescue also in Wichita Falls.

Mom Tip: Don’t forget to share this with grandma so she can get you a membership for Christmas! It’s a great investment that will give Mom and Dad a break all year round.

Explore Alley Cat Vintage in WF

Alley Cat Vintage is not just another antique store. This vintage store in downtown Wichita Falls is three stories and more than 50,000 square feet of treasures waiting to be found.

Wondering how to make an antique store fun for kids? Here’s my tip. While sitting in the car, come up with a random list of ten things for the kids to find. Make it a scavenger hunt and they’ll be busy while you look for that must-have vinyl record. Make sure you take the time to check out several murals on the property before heading to your next activity…

CrashWorks: STEAM Studio and Makerspace 

“I would never get bored here,” my girl said. “This is my kind of place.”  And two hours later, I had to make my kids leave CrashWorks with their creations in hand. Located in downtown, CrashWorks WF is the place your kids don’t know they want to go to… but they’ll beg to return! Better yet, bring some friends or a school group and let them create together.

Your kids want to make a mess, and you don’t want to deal with it. One small entrance fee brings you hours of…

• Endless recycled items and crafting supplies
• Paint and glue gun stations
• A play area for littles 
• Electronics to take apart
• A carpentry room complete with tools
• And hours of creativity. 

CrashWorks is another favorite kid activity in Wichita Falls that we would have a membership for unlimited crafting and exploring. Help them out! CrashWorks accepts all your old electronics, cleaned out craft closets, and random pieces.

Wichita Falls Mural Hunt

Over the last decade, the alley ways and buildings in downtown Wichita Falls have been painted with murals in all their color. From life-size creatures to graffiti to a three story mural, this downtown area is now bursting with color.

Don’t just drive past the paintings. Stop and admire them! Just because it isn’t framed on a dark gallery wall, that doesn’t mean they aren’t art and worth your time. Our favorite area to explore was the graffitied alley on the way to Maniac’s Mansion. Check out this list of Wichita Falls murals to learn more about their location and artists.

Rent a Scooter in Wichita Falls

Ready to explore downtown Wichita Falls, TX? Grab a WF Goat Scooter ! As the downtown area is revitalized, some of the destinations are a little spread out. Make your life easier (and faster). If riding electric scooters isn’t your thing, bring your own scooters. Downtown Wichita Falls sidewalks are great for exploring by wheel. And don’t forget to look out for riders as you drive around.

How do the electric scooters work?

• Download the GOAT app and find the nearest available electric scooter.
• Push off and stay within the geofenced area.
• Return your scooters to the designated areas by 11 PM nightly.

Note: You must be 18 or older to ride a scooter! (Let the grown ups have the rental scooters while the kids bring their scooters from home.)

Downtown Wichita Falls Farmers Market

Located downtown on Ohio Street, the farmers market in Wichita Falls comes to life every Saturday morning from 9 AM to 1 PM bringing local farmers, artists, and bakers together. There are so many vendors, that it even spills out into the surrounding streets.

Skip breakfast Saturday and come ready to grab a fresh pastry or treat before loading up your bags with fresh produce and meat for the week.

Gourmet Chocolate in Wichita Falls

Looking for a unique treat? Grab some artisanal chocolate delicacies at B Cocoa Artisan Chocolate right around the corner from TAG’s Maniac’s Mansion. Created in house, time your visit just right to even watch them make it. Not a fan of chocolate (are you crazy? 🙂 ), grab some for a gift to take home – they’ll love the beautifully painted bonbons or truffles. You can even opt for a fancy popsicle that they’ll freshly dip in your choice of chocolate!

If you’re feeling fancy, you can even book a tasting or workshop in the evenings to take it to the next level.

Summer Snow

Hot and sweaty after riding your scooters around the downtown Wichita Falls murals? Take a quick drive to one of the only snow cone places in Wichita Falls, Summer Snow. It may be small, but it’s worth it! This is an inside stop so you can cool off before heading out on the rest of your day.

If you’re looking for something a little more exciting, add some spice with a chamoyada – a Mexican specialty of spicy chamoy sauce and fruit.

The downtown history museum in Wichita Falls is a great reminder of why you shouldn’t overlook the local museums. Although it doesn’t have the fanciness (or high-cost!) of Dallas or Houston, the Museum of North Texas History brings history to life, much of it from local families who have donated to the exhibits.

Give yourself two hours, and see how this north Texas town has developed since it began in 1880 as a railroad and oil boom town. See how people lived decades ago. Polio will no longer be a distant disease when you look at the iron lung and read the stories of the people who lived then. Your little history buff will love examining the model battleships and reading about the different wars.

The Best Hibachi at Samurai

Although not located downtown, I can’t tell you what to do in my hometown of Wichita Falls, without telling you our favorite place to eat. And a good thing about WF is that it’s small enough that it will only take you about ten minutes to get here.

Samurai of Tokyo is the hibachi to which my family compares all other hibachi experiences. No matter the price or fancy chain name, no other Japanese restaurant has met our standards. Ask a local. They move away and make sure to come back to Samurai when they come back to visit.

Don’t plan to show up right at lunch time or you’ll have a wait! But that’s for good reason. You’ll see!

Wild Bird Rescue

Looking for a fabulous place for kids who love animals? Take them to the Wild Bird Rescue and let them visit with the rescued wild animals of Wichita Falls. It’s free, but make a donation and support their cause. With multiple cages of outdoor birds, wander onto the property and head to the beautiful birds. If you’re lucky, the staff will come out and answer all your questions.

With a goal to return the birds to the wild, this Wichita Falls animal rescue serves to educate the public about their work, letting them interact with birds of prey. This is a great place to show the kids some adults who truly have a passion for what they do.

Don’t forget. This is a bird rescue – call them if you have a bird that needs rescue. Take them supplies to support their mission, and tell your friends. They need your help.

Wichita Falls Skate Park

Did you know the only skateboard park in this Red River area is located right off Interstate 44 in Wichita Falls? That makes the City of Wichita Falls Skate Park easily accessed and great for people just driving through Wichita Falls on their way to Oklahoma.

With bowls up to ten feet deep and ramps throughout, this colorfully decorated (aka graffiti-ed) skate park will keep you busy! Don’t have a skateboard? My kids love riding their scooters or just sliding and running around. Skateboard parks are a great way to get out some energy, but stay safe and bring your helmet. Given the summer heat, make this is an early morning activity.

A note of caution: the city of Wichita Falls just can’t keep up with the art that keeps decorating these concrete walls. While they are colorful designs, some are colorful in subject matter and language. Consider it an education.

Wichita Falls is known for its vibrant arts scene, theaters, and historic architecture. With tons of unique shopping, beautiful nature and wildlife, and great restaurants, Wichita Falls is the perfect place to stop for your family’s road trip.

Whether you live in the area or visit with your kids, there are tons of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Here, we’ve compiled a list of the nine best things to do in Wichita Falls, Texas with kids.

Castaway Cove Waterpark is the perfect place to take your kids on a hot summer day. There are activities for children of all ages and adults. There’s a reason why it’s one of the best water parks in Texas! 

Younger children will enjoy Nellie’s Rolling River, a relaxing lazy river that runs between the other attractions. Little kids can also play in Buccaneer Bay, a multi-level play system with water cannons, small slides, and tons of other water features.

Older children and adults will love Castaway Cove’s larger waterslides, including Pirates Plunge, a slide with a 37-foot vertical free fall that can reach speeds of 40mph. Pirates Plunge includes a 360-degree loop and translucent bottom for spectators to watch riders plummet down the slide.

The whole family can play in Shipwrecked Beach, a wave pool with geysers and access to the lazy river, or Hideaway Harbor. Hideaway Harbor has water volleyball for older kids, teens, and adults, and a rope crossing for little ones to practice their coordination and confidence. 

When it’s time for everyone to leave the sun, you can sit back in one of Castaway Cove’s poolside cabanas , which are available for rent with a reservation.

You’ll find plenty of activities to fill your summer days. Castaway Cove has senior and military discounts and season passes for individuals and families, making it one of the best things to do in Wichita Falls with kids, especially if your group is large.

Lake Arrowhead State Park is home to fishing, camping, hiking, horse riding, swimming, and more. You’ll find 524 acres of activities at this park for the whole family to enjoy.

Lake Arrowhead State Park is known primarily for its fishing spots. You don’t need a fishing license to fish in the park as long as you remain onshore. The park is the perfect place for beginners to learn how to fish without buying equipment because you can borrow a fishing pole from park headquarters, though you must bring your own bait.

Children of all ages can become Junior Rangers by doing activities in the Junior Ranger Activity Journal, available for pick up at headquarters. When you pick up the activity book, you can also borrow a Junior Ranger Explorer Pack, a backpack loaded with tools and activities for kids.

Lake Arrowhead has five miles of multi-use trails, many of which are easy enough for little hikers to complete. The Dragonfly Loop is perfect for families. It is just half a mile long and includes signs and placards for everyone to learn about the nature in the area.

If you want to make sure that you can hit all the activities in the park, you can stay overnight in one of their many campgrounds . Lake Arrowhead State Park has campsites with electricity hookups, tent campsites, and a dump station for RVs. 

Lake Arrowhead State Park is open daily. During the busy seasons of Spring and Summer, they recommend reserving passes online , as they often reach capacity. There is a park entrance fee of $4 for anyone 13 years or older.

Lucy Park has 178 acres of fun if you need things to do in Wichita Falls with kids. Lucy Park is nestled in a bend of the Wichita River, giving it a unique natural landscape filled with huge trees, ducks, geese, and other wildlife. Families can enjoy a scenic walk through the park on trails that lead to a spectacular view of the falls.

Lucy Park has an 18-hole disc golf course, sand and concrete volleyball courts, and basketball courts for athletic families. There are three different modular playgrounds for smaller children to run around in.

Lucy Park also has BBQ grills and picnic shelters, making it the perfect place for an outdoor get-together. Bigger groups can rent the large picnic shelters for 90-120 people for just $15.

The River Bend Nature Center is the perfect place for families with kids to connect with nature. They have tons of educational and entertaining attractions and activities for families with kids of all ages.

The Bryant Edwards Learning Center is filled with many exciting exhibits, such as spiders, snakes, frogs, and bugs. Exhibits change with the seasons, so there will be something new to discover every time you come.

River Bend Nature Center’s Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is a 7,000-square-foot structure filled with butterflies, native plants, turtles, prairie dogs, and more. A tall glass tank lets you observe fish and other aquatic life at eye level, perfect for curious little ones.

Peyton’s Place is River Bend Nature Center’s butterfly enclosure. It’s filled with hundreds of beautiful butterflies. Peyton’s Place is the perfect place for children to explore and learn about nature up close. If they’re lucky, a butterfly may even land on them!

River Bend Nature Center is also home to 15 acres of wetlands with trails, a library, a gift shop, and a terrace for bird watching, so older children and adults will have plenty to do as well.

Urban Air Adventure Park is a trampoline park, but it has much more than just trampolines. They have adventures available for kids at every level so that older kids won’t be bored and little ones will have plenty to do.

The tube playground at Urban Air Adventure Park is for children smaller than 52”. It has slides, tubes, an observation bubble, and more. The tube playground allows small children to learn confidence and motor skills. 

Older kids can play dodgeball on trampolines, practice flips in the drop zone, learn to tumble on the runway, and play basketball on trampolines in the slam dunk zone. The King’s Good Vineyard and Berry Farm is the perfect place for families to spend time outdoors, complete with picking their own fruit. While the farm is primarily known for its fresh fruit and you-pick options for families, they also host movie nights and concerts throughout the year.

Adults and children can pick strawberries in the field from April to June for just $5/lb. From Mid-June to July, the King’s Good Vineyard and Berry Farm hosts blackberry picking for $4/lb. If you catch them at the right time, the farm also allows you to pick grapes as long as they’re in season.

When you’ve finished collecting your fruit, you can head over to the Cafe and Market for homemade jam, local honey, and Texas pecans. The cafe also has a lunch menu available, with all kinds of delicious meals that you can top off with strawberry and blackberry desserts, made fresh with the fruits at the farm.
