Time

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

The Ultimate Guide to Kimberley Cruises

Back in 1996 we developed and operated the Kimberley’s very first expedition cruises aboard our small 48-passenger expedition ship Coral Princess, establishing Coral Princess Cruises (now Coral Expeditions) as the pioneer of expedition cruising in this remarkable region. And now, we’re sharing the expert advice and insider tips we’ve learned over the past 25+ years with you to help you plan your ultimate Kimberley expedition. There’s no doubt this coming year is going to be one of the biggest years ever in Kimberley cruising, and our fully-updated guide contains all the information you need to plan your trip of a lifetime.

For the coming season our favourite expedition ships will be returning to cruise the Kimberley again, such as the state-of-the-art sister ships Coral Adventurer and Coral Geographer , billed as the world’s best tropical expedition ships. We’re also welcoming Heritage Adventurer to our portfolio of Kimberley  Cruises,   And of course, many of our favourite ships such as Reef Prince , Coral Discoverer, True North and True North II, Kimberley Quest II, Great Escape, Eco Abrolhos , Ocean Dream and Kimberley Pearl continue to offer some of the very best Kimberley cruising experiences.

We’ve done all the hard work for you by featuring only the very best cruising options possible; you can rest assured that the operators we work with are fully accredited and offer the most comprehensive itineraries possible. Call our team of specialists today on 1800 90 20 80 to starting planning your ultimate Kimberley adventure cruise.

Kimberley Australia Map

WHERE & WHAT IS ‘THE KIMBERLEY’? Located in North West Australia, the Kimberley region is truly one of the world’s last frontiers and greatest wilderness areas. This pristine area is three times the size of England (or about the same size as the state of California), yet home to just 30,000 residents. Here, you will find some of the world’s most incredible scenery, fascinating natural phenomena, beguiling wildlife and ancient civilisations, whose artwork dates back more than 20,000 years. The Kimberley offers a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.

WHY AN EXPEDITION CRUISE? There’s no other way to experience the wonders of the Kimberley Coast than by small ship as most of the key icons are impossible to reach by road. On an expedition cruise you will also travel with a team of experts, making sure you don’t miss out on any of the ‘must sees’.

WHICH SHIP SHOULD I CHOOSE? We’ve featured some of our favourite and most highly recommended ships later in this guide, but your final choice will depend on your own goals and travel styles. Our specialists are on hand to help you choose.

CAN I GO FISHING? Many of the smaller ships are fully equipped for fishing , allowing you to catch a ‘barra’ or two. Make sure you let us know if fishing is a priority when choosing your ship. Some of the ships you might wish to consider if fishing is a priority are:

  • Kimberley Quest II
  • Reef Prince
  • Eco Abrolhos
  • True North II
  • Great Escape
  • Kimberley Pearl
  • Ocean Dream

Each of the above vessels allow plenty of time for fishing and carry all the required gear and lures – although most allow you to bring your own rod and reel if you prefer.

Generally, the larger ships (40+ travellers) do not offer  fishing , although on occasion the likes of the Coral Expeditions’ ships might offer a hand-reel fishing excursion on a ‘catch and release’ basis.

AREN’T KIMBERLEY CRUISES EXPENSIVE? There’s no doubt a Kimberley cruise is a stretch for many budgets, but we do have a number of options available at various prices. There are many reasons why theses cruises can seem expensive, including high crew to guest ratios, the cost of provisioning in remote areas and of course fuel. But is it worth the high cost? You bet!

CAN ANYONE DO A KIMBERLEY CRUISE? To get the most out of this trip a reasonable level of fitness is required. Many of the walks ashore are on unmade tracks, which can be undulating and rocky. There is no age limit though – infact we’ve seen a 95 year old ticking the Kimberley off his bucket list!

CAN KIMBERLEY CRUISE SPECIALISTS HELP WITH TOURS & FLIGHTS? As a full-service travel agency, our expert team are here to help you put together your entire Kimberley holiday. Once we work out the cruise that best suits your requirements we will then help you add any tours (either day tours or longer journeys through the Kimberley interior), hotels, flights and even travel insurance.

WHEN SHOULD I CRUISE THE KIMBERLEY? As soon as possible! Check out the following pages for the best times to travel during the year.

Choosing the Best Time of Year for a Kimberley Cruise

Ready to tick that that once in a lifetime Kimberley expedition cruise off your bucket list but unsure about the best time of year to experience Australia’s wilderness coast? We outline each of the Kimberley’s three distinct seasons to help you choose the time of year that is right for you. Kimberley cruises operate between late March and October each year, so you can put a line through November to February straight away as its simply too hot, humid and wet, not to mention the added danger of the cyclone season.

Kimberley Quest Waterfall Season

WATERFALL SEASON (MARCH, APRIL & MAY) One of the main drawcards of the Kimberley Coast is its iconic waterfalls – including the towering 80-metre King George and four- tiered Mitchell Falls. Most of the coast’s falls are fed by the Kimberley’s drenching wet season rains, so the earlier in the season you go the more spectacular the falls are. The landscape will also be covered in a brilliant green hue, as vegetation regenerates thanks to the downpour. It’s not uncommon for the occasional grey and rainy day during this period, and it can still be quite humid, which can make walks ashore a bit more taxing. In our view seeing (and hearing) the full force of the falls more than makes up for the extra humidity and an occasional wet day.

True North aerial Kimberley

PEAK SEASON (JUNE & JULY) The most popular time of year to travel to the Kimberley, likely because the ‘dry season’ weather is characterised by clear blue skies and balmy days, which makes for a welcome escape from the southern states’ winter chill. Depending on the amount of rain during the wet season, there might be some water still flowing over the big falls as late as August, but it will be a trickle at best. One notable exception is the iconic King Cascades on the Prince Regent River; these falls are spring fed and will have a flow year round. If you can’t bear the thought of another chilly winter then June and July are probably your ‘go to’ months to experience the Kimberley Coast.

Odyssey Kimberley Cruises Whales

WHALE & WILDFLOWER SEASON (AUGUST & SEPTEMBER) From August (sometimes even earlier) to early October each year the Kimberley Coast is the world’s epicentre for whalewatching. Up to 30,000 humpbacks make their way from the Antarctic feeding grounds to the warm tropical waters of the Kimberley Coast to breed and give birth, and you will have the best seat in the house when travelling on an expedition cruise. It’s common practice for the skipper to idle the ship’s engines and drift with the tide whilst these majestic mammals put on playful displays around the ship. This late in the season it’s likely that Mitchell Falls and King George Falls will be dry (you can always see Talbot Bay’s Horizontal Falls at least!), but you’re likely to have more wildlife encounters due to native fauna having to travel further, out in the open in search of water. Wildflowers are also blooming, covering the ground in a carpet of colourful native flowers.

OUR VERDICT So which should you choose? It really comes down to where your interests lay; waterfalls or whales. But at the end of the day, let’s be honest, any time of year is a great time to be cruising the Kimberley coast!

Seven Key Wonders of the Kimberley Coast

MAKE SURE YOUR EXPEDITION INCLUDES THESE ICONS Here’s our check list of the seven greatest wonders of Australia’s Kimberley Coast. Mitchell Falls Kimberley Cruise

MITCHELL FALLS (MITCHELL RIVER) Mitchell Falls is perhaps the most photographed of all of the Kimberley’s wonders. The waters of the mighty Mitchell River cascade over four tiers, with a total drop of over 80 metres. There are a number of other falls in the area well worth seeing, including Little Mertens and Big Mertens, but Mitchell Falls is the main drawcard. The Mitchell River below the falls is not navigable by expedition ship, meaning that you can’t cruise directly up to the base. Instead, you’re going to need to ‘chopper in’. Some expedition ships – such as Kimberley Quest, True North and Great Escape – carry their own private helicopters, whilst other ships call in HeliSpirit (a local operator based near the Falls) to provide scenic flights. Typically a two hour excursion, including scenic flight from the ship across the Mitchell Plateau to the falls and back, and an hour to swim in the Mitchell River (above the falls – no crocs!) and take photographs will set you back about $500 – $700 per person, but it’s well worth the expense.

Coral Expeditions Guest Mermaid Boab Tree Kimberley

MERMAID BOAB TREE (CAREENING BAY) When Phillip Parker King (that’s a name you hear a lot of in the Kimberley) careened his vessel the Mermaid for six weeks of repairs during his coastal survey in back in 1820, his carpenter carved details of their visit into a small boab tree. His inscription read:

HMC Mermaid 1820

The beach where King successfully carried out Mermaid’s repairs is known as Careening Bay, and today – over 200 years later – the twin-trunked boab tree is now twelve metres wide, the letters huge.

You can read more about the history of the Mermaid Boab Tree by clicking here .

Horizontal Falls Kimberley Cruises

HORIZONTAL FALLS (TALBOT BAY) According to naturalist and documentary-maker Sir David Attenborough Horizontal Falls is ‘one of the greatest natural wonders of the world’. Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, to be repeated again on the turning tide. The tides in this area have a ten-metre variation with the affect created by the tide building up in front of the gaps faster than it can flow through them and there can be a four-metre high waterfall between the bays. Most expedition cruise operators offer you the chance to have an adrenaline-filled inflatable zodiac ride through the falls, a real thrill and a highlight of any Kimberley cruise.

Kimberley Quest at Montgomery Reef

MONTGOMERY REEF (CAMDEN SOUND) Imagine being anchored 20 kilometres offshore, surrounded by endless blue waters, with just a speck of the far-off horizon in the distance. Then, try to imagine the tide turning and the sea levels dropping by ten metres to expose Australia’s largest inshore reef system, Montgomery Reef. Covering 400 square kilometres, Montgomery Reef is located adjacent to Doubtful Bay and is truly Australia’s greatest marine spectacle. Most expedition cruise ships time their visit to this area to coincide with the twice-daily ‘reef reveals’, and even after all my visits to the Kimberley, experiencing Montgomery Reef at low tide never disappoints.

Great Escape at King Cascades Kimberley Cruises

KING CASCADES (PRINCE REGENT RIVER) Not all expedition cruises feature a visit to King Cascades, as some of the bigger 100+ passenger ships are too large to be able to ferry their guests the 27 kilometres up the Prince Regent River to the base of the falls. That’s a real pity as King Cascades is one of the most scenic locales in the Kimberley. The waterfall itself is around 40 metres tall, with the flow cascading down tiered rock formations. The falls are also spring fed, meaning water will be flowing year round. Notably, back in 1987 American model Ginger Meadows famously took the plunge from a private cruiser and was tragically taken by a monster croc – who some say still patrols the Prince Regent today!

Gwion Gwion Bradshaw Paintings

THE BRADSHAW PAINTINGS  (EAST KIMBERLEY) When Kimberley cruising you’re bound to come face to face with lots of rock art. it’s everywhere you look; on cliff faces, rock overhangs and in caves. You’ll learn that there are two types of art found in the Kimberley. The more modern (around 5,000 years) and prevalent is the Wandjina art, easily recognisable by the pale, circle spirit faces drawn without mouths. The second type of art you will see is a major drawcard for many travellers – the mysterious Bradshaw Paintings, known as ‘Gwion Gwion’ to the locals.

Named after pastoralist Joseph Bradshaw, the first European to record this distinctive style of art work back in 1891, the origin of the Bradshaw Paintings is contentious. Dating back at least 20,000 years, some experts suggest that the paintings were drawn by the forefathers of the current local indigenous people, whilst others opine that the art has an Indonesian influence, and may have been produced by early traders. Whatever the origin, these luminous, ochre figures – often decorated with tassels and ornate head-dresses are a sight to behold.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the Kimberley’ rock art you may like to visit Rock Art Australia’s website .

Download Rock Art Australia’s  introductory guide to Aboriginal Art of the Kimberley.

KING GEORGE FALLS (KING GEORGE RIVER) If you’ve seen Baz Luhrmann’s epic 2008 film Australia you might recognise King George Falls. Located in the Northern Kimberley close to the town of Wyndham, some of the shorter ‘Southern Kimberley’ expeditions don’t have time to visit these imposing twin falls, however on other expeditions the journey down the King George River is bound to be a highlight. The best time to experience these falls is at the start of the cruising season, between March and May, when the water flow is at its most powerful. After travelling twelve kilometres up river, surrounded by towering sandstone escarpments on either side, the sheer volume of water flowing over the falls creates a distant roar that grows in volume as you approach. On some expeditions the active can also join a challenging hike to the top of the falls for outstanding panoramas and photo opportunities. If witnessing the Kimberley’s waterfalls at their absolute best (right after the wet season) appeals to you, each March the Great Escape offers a nine day Waterfall Safari expedition that includes Mitchell Falls, King Cascades and King George Falls.

A day in the life... on a Kimberley Cruise

WHAT IS IT REALLY LIKE? After exploring the world on cruise ships ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 passengers, it came as quite a surprise to me to experience an expedition cruise.

The very term ‘expedition cruise’ conjures up myriad visions of abseilling down cliffs, crawling through caves or wading through a swamp. I had this vision of waking up at 5am to trek through the jungle in search of a rare bird. After eight hours of slashing our way through the jungle covered in leeches we finally come across the last pink bird of paradise in existence.

Now, it is true that you can find really strenuous and challenging expedition style holidays if you want. However, I soon found out that expedition cruising was nothing like that. The expedition cruises I have been on have been the most relaxing and enjoyable of my 30 year career in travel writing.

Let me take you through a day aboard a typical expedition cruise. Today, I have something really special for you. We are visiting one of Australia’s most iconic adventure destinations, the spectacular Horizontal Falls on Australia’s wild Kimberley Coast.

Coral Discoverer zodiac at Horizontal falls

The first thing I notice on rising at 7am is the ship entering the stunning Talbot Bay with high cliffs all around. I race upstairs to get some pics and video as the sun rises over the sea. Many of my fellow expeditioners are already up, enjoying a morning walk. Breakfast is from 7.30am and is a buffet with a wide selection of goodies available. At 9am we walk on board our 72 seater expedition tender and settle in. I get there early so I can grab my favourite spot for filming and photography. We go on an exploration cruise through the many striking bays and passages of this massive inlet. The water is very still on this particular day and the huge white clouds above are mirrored in the water giving an amazing photo opportunity. The tender’s engines comes to stop and we glide through the still blue water, allowing us to fully appreciate nature at its most majestic display.

Coral Discoverer aerial Kimberley Cruises

We then head for the world famous Horizontal Falls which most people on board rate as the highlight of our entire cruise. The ship’s two zodiacs are waiting to us through the Falls. In groups of five, clad in life jackets, plus the skipper, we climb from the explorer boat on to the zodiac. It is surprisingly easy to get aboard and perch on the outer inflatable side of the zodiac. The 12m tide is really racing through the small gap in the cliffs and looks a bit like the rapids in the Grand Canyon. We race along bumping and jumping across the angry, swirling monster. Am I scared? Not really, the exhilaration of that ride soon eliminates any second thoughts you may have about it all.

David Attenborough described the Horizontal Falls “one of the greatest natural wonders in the world”. And, as we surge through the gap at its wildest point, it’s easy to agree with the world’s most famous nature adventurer. We enter a wide bay and then discover another horizontal waterfall further on which has the same intensity as the first one. Our skipper cleverly steers us through the narrow, roaring, raging gap with sheer cliffs on either side. Returning through the two falls is just as exhilarating.

Coral Discoverer zodiac wave

Back on board the explorer tender everyone is excited about the unique adventure they have just experienced. They cheer each returning group on the zodiac and the zodiac people yell back in excitement. Surgeons from New York and CEOs from Germany are jumping and down like 10-year-olds. We return to the ship just after midday and a mouth watering buffet awaits us. How the chefs on board can turn out such sumptuous food in such a small galley is beyond me. I guess it’s all forward planning and a natural talent for what their guests like to eat. Most of my fellow travellers have experienced fine dining around the world, so our ship’s chefs have to impress with their food.

Drinks bar Coral Discoverer

At 2pm lunch is finished and we climb aboard the explorer boat for another leisurely cruise, this time to Silica Beach on Hidden Island. We revel in its white sands and crystal waters. There’s even the chance for a cooling dip. This shorter excursion is a relaxing wind down after the dramatic events of the morning. We return to the ship just after 4pm which gives everyone time to sort through their photos or have a quick nap. At 5.30pm I nip up to the top bar for a cleansing ale with my fellow adventurers. At 6pm our Expedition Leader gives us a quick rundown of the day’s events including some photos of all the action. He then lets us know the plans for the next day.

Coral Discoverer al fresco dining top deck

Dinner is served at 6.30pm and I enjoy a nice Australian Semillon Sauvignon Blanc with a stunning seafood à la carte dinner that would compliment even the most fastidious restaurant ashore . All the talk is about the Horizontal Falls and the amazing day we have just experienced.

An older lady from Hornsby named Madeline on my table confesses she was ready to pull out of the zodiac ride after seeing the falls. “I never thought I’d do it even though I had dreamt about it for years. But I did it!” she said, her voice wavering. “And now I can tell my grandkids. I really achieved the dream of a lifetime” she said excitedly. The table went quite for a short time and then I lead a toast: “To Madeline!” Eight wine glasses clinked as one. “To dreams,” Madeline replied raising her glass.

After dinner I head on deck where many are enjoying the warm night air of the Kimberley. It was just one day in our lives, but what a day it was. Like many days on an expedition cruise, it is a day we will remember forever. For Madeline, the dream of a lifetime had come true that very day.

This piece was prepared by Dallas Sherringham, a media professional and world traveller. Dallas travelled aboard Coral Discoverer for this piece.

Best Ships for Kimberley Cruises

WHICH SMALL SHIPS DO WE RECOMMEND AND WHY? Over 26 years ago we designed and operated the Kimberley’s very first expedition cruises . Now, we’re using all of that experience and insider knowledge to help you choose the ship and itinerary that best suits your interests and travel style. We work with only a hand-picked portfolio of the best ships, meaning we wont try to convince you to travel on a ship carrying 100s of passengers, or one which requires a side trip to an Indonesian port purely for paperwork reasons (as is the case with some non Australian-flagged ships). Our aim is to listen to you and your desires and suggest the ship that we think best fits what you have in mind. Want to focus on the waterfalls? indigenous art? or even having a go fishing for ‘Barra’? Check out our featured ships over the following pages then give us a call to hear our expert advice to help you make the right choice.

Kimberley Coast, Australia

Rugged and beautiful, Kimberley Coast is one of the greatest natural assets to Western Australia. The coastline is filled with islands and embayments, as well as archipelagos and extensive fringing reefs. Due to its limited human access, Kimberley Coast is one of the least affected marine environments in the world. It is home to Australia's largest inshore reef, and has beautiful seagrass meadows and mangrove forests. Visitors to the coast can find a great variety of corals, colonies of breeding seabirds, and the largest Humpback whale population in the world.

Cruises from/to Kimberley Coast

Kimberley coast cruise port.

Kimberley Coast is the furthest region of Australia’s Kimberley land mass located in the northwestern portion of the continent. At roughly 165 square miles with 2,500 islands residing in its waters, the coast has a population around 50,000. The total landmass of Kimberley, which is one of nine western regions, is three times larger than England. The coast has a wet season and a dry season, the latter of which runs from April to October and is the region’s peak travel season. The dry season often sees temperatures between the 70s and 90s (Fahrenheit), and the beaches and forested areas are perfectly calm and approachable. There are step-sided mountains that are cut through with limestone, along with sandstone gorges and ridges that have been made soft over time due to years of monsoon abuse during the wet season. These gorges allow for further access into the mountains making them ideal spots to hike and explore.

  • Cable Beach is Western Australia’s most famous beach and is said to be one of the most beautiful in the world with perfectly white sands and clear waters.
  • Emma Gorge is an exciting and intricate hiking area that is best explored early in the day to avoid large amounts of other hikers, and the sometimes sweltering sun.
  • Gantheaume Point is located in Broome and is a stunningly beautiful plain that offers an easy walk to a selection of beaches or a barrage of nearby climbable cliffs.
  • Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park, which is also in Broome, is where you can see a variety of crocodiles in a guide-led tour that will get you close enough to the reptiles without putting you in danger.

A Zodiac explores the Horizontal Falls in the Kimberley

Discovering The Kimberley: One of the last wilderness destinations on earth

princess cruise kimberley coast

Sponsored by Coral Expeditions

Vertical sandstone cliffs rise hundreds of metres skywards and waterfalls cascade down their sides. Vast canyons punctuated by freshwater swimming holes. A region three times larger than England, with just 35,000 inhabitants.

Welcome to the Kimberley, one of the last wildernesses on earth.

Small ship pioneer Australian-owned Coral Expeditions has been sharing the secrets of this ancient region for more than 40 years. The line was pioneering Kimberley cruises before most operators were even aware of the region on Australia’s north west coast.

Discover the Kimberley the "Australian Way"

Horizontal Falls in the Kimberley

Coral Expedition’s Australian Way ethos underpins expedition excellence and unrivalled local expertise, friendly, Aussie service, a true expedition style and long standing familiarity with the Kimberley built upon three decades cruising the region.

Against the implausibly aquamarine ocean of the Kimberley, Coral Expeditions three Australian-flagged expedition ships – Coral Adventurer , Coral Geographer and Coral Discoverer - are designed to get you intimately close to this ancient landscape.

A landscape like nowhere else in the world. Where weathered lands are carved by the powerful forces of nature and mammoth tides rise and fall to conceal and reveal coastal treasures.

And Coral Expeditions is operating three ships in the Kimberley from April to September in 2024.

The Kimberley’s Dramatic Landscape is Best Seen From a Small Ship

Coral Adventurer moored in front of Steep Island in the Kimberley

Kimberley dawns are nothing short of breathtaking – expect pastel-hued skies tinting towering cliffs of sandstone a burnt orange hue which are replicated in a mirror-like sea. As long shadows shorten to mark the arrival of a new day, the silence is absolute, the peace palpable.

In a region three times the size of England and with an estimated population of just 35,000 people, most of whom live in a handful of towns, it’s possible to go days, if not weeks without seeing another human being.

Coral Expeditions King Cascade Falls

Most of the 2,500-odd islands are uninhabited while much of the Kimberley’s dramatic landscape is best seen from an expedition ship. Savour the cascading marvel of nature at the terraced hanging gardens at Kings Cascade Falls ( above ). Bear witness to the diversity of marine life at Montgomery Reef as the falling tide tumbles off the reef in powerful torrents and swirling currents. Enjoy striking Kimberley sunsets as dusk settles upon a remote beach untainted by human footprints.

The real heart of the Kimberley – iconic locations like Horizontal Falls, King George River with its 80m tall twin King George (Oomari) Falls, Prince Regent River and stunning rock art much of which can only be reached by sea.

Coral Expeditions is Built Upon a 20-year Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Coral Adventurer (Photo: Coral Expeditions)

That’s where Coral Expeditions excels. The Australian-owned company pioneered small ship cruising in the Kimberley and were recently recognised for local expertise built upon a 20-year-long commitment to sustainable tourism, being inducted into Ecotourism Australia’s Hall of Fame .

Coral Expeditions’ ships spend more time in the region than any other cruise line. Each ship carries no more than 120 passengers ( Coral Discoverer carries just 72 passengers), allowing the line to get up close and personal with nature.

These purpose-built ships are designed for tropical expedition access, enabling you to get close to nature with ease where other operators cannot. There are plenty of wide-open public spaces and all outward facing cabins connect you with the destination.

The Australian Way on Coral Expeditions

The line’s all-Australian crew are passionate and proud to share the adventure with you; always attentive and caring with a friendly and approachable style, in keeping with our Australian values.

Coral Expeditons’ ships are also all-inclusive: your cruise fare covers excursions, activities, meals and drinks, expert guides, taxes and fees – so no signing of bills or swiping key cards.

But however wonderful the ships are, Coral Expeditions focuses on the destinations, connecting guests with nature, culture, and heritage with more time ashore in remote natural areas away from the crowds.

Coral Expeditions retains a true expedition ethos, with small ships meaning fewer guests and more intimate and personal encounters along the way.

A unique feature of Coral Expeditions’ ships are their unique Xplorer tenders which are hydraulically raised and lowered from deck level for ease of access and come with shade cover, seating, a toilet and onboard commentary.

The Kimberley Features Some of the World’s Most Impressive and Ancient Rock Art

Montgomery Reef The Kimberley

Curious, worldly travellers are lured to the Kimberley for its far-flung islands, cultural treasures, its raw wilderness and the breathtaking natural features of its land and seascapes.

Twice daily mammoth ten metre tides recede as over 300 sq km of Montgomery Reef (Yowjab) rises from the sea in a turbulent tumult of cascading water. The tumultuous movement of water attracts a plethora of wildlife and birdlife. Common sights are the white plumage of a stalking eastern reef egret standing stark against the drying reef. In the swirling channels of water, turtles pop their heads up momentarily and sharks cruise the shallows looking for easy prey. But it is the human stories, many of which lay concealed amidst an ancient landscape millions of years in the making which create lasting memories from a Kimberley expedition.

The Kimberley in WA has some of the oldest recored rock art in the world

At Raft Point (Ngumbree) one of the Kimberely’s most impressive rock art galleries guards the entrance to the vast expanse of Doubtful Bay. The bay is the traditional country of the Worrora people who follow the Wandjina as their law-maker, creator and spiritual guide. Wandjinia art ( pictured above ) often depicts halos around human heads with large eyes and the absence of a mouth. At just 4,000 years old these works are positively youthful by Australian rock art standards.

Gwion Gwion art (once known as Bradshaws) on the other hand are significantly older. These artworks have confounded historians ever since pastoralist Joseph Bradshaw laid eyes on them during an exploratory expedition in 1891. Gwion Gwion art is most unusual with a graceful beauty hinting at considerable creative ability and skill of their maker. The style is easily recognised by fine, elegant human figurines adorned with tassels and ornaments.

An estimated 100,000 Kimberley art sites are spread over approximately 50,000 sq km. Ranging between 5,000 and 50,000 + years old, it’s thought they may hold the key to Australia’s earliest history. In 2021 the University of Melbourne radiocarbon-dated a two metre-long painting of a kangaroo as Australia’s oldest intact rock painting at around 17,500 years old.

Coral Expeditions Has Deep Respect and Strong Connections With the Places it Visits

Coral Geographer visits Raft Point in the Kimberley

Many of these sites are known only to traditional owners and it’s important to respect this land and its historical context. Coral Expeditions visits sites such as Raft Point when Traditional Owners are available to guide guests and share stories on the artworks and its significance to First National peoples. These art galleries tell stories passed down through countless generations and are often found beneath sandstone overhangs – essentially the homes of their ancestors – where artefacts, shell middens and burial sites provide intriguing insights into ancient Aboriginal Australia.

There’s a palpable spirituality to the Kimberley. Possibly it has something to do with the absence of industrial human intervention. But if you take some moments to absorb your surroundings, to listen to the land, feel it’s pulse beneath your feet as you follow in footsteps tens of thousands of years old, the Kimberley will likely wrap its warmth around your heart too.

Coral Expeditions’ Ships Spend More Time Cruising the Kimberley Than Any Other Cruise Line

Coral Discoverer in the Kimberley

With its roots firmly embedded as Australia’s pioneering cruise line, Coral Expeditions’ ships spend more time cruising the Kimberley than any other cruise line. Their relaxed style of cruising means personal, intimate experiences both onboard and when out on excursions in the Xplorer tenders. Shore excursions and lectures are led by experienced guides and specialists in their field, many of whom have a lifetime of local expertise.

“The Kimberley holds a special place in our heart,” says Jeff Gillies, Commercial Director Coral Expeditions. “Some of our Expedition Leaders have been guiding guests in the Kimberley for over twenty years, yet they say every voyage uncovers something new. That’s why we love this truly Australian adventure so much.”

The newest ship in Coral Expeditions fleet, Coral Geographer , was launched in 2021 and is a sister ship to Coral Adventurer launched two years earlier. Balcony staterooms and suites with large picture windows are a popular choice while open deck spaces and public areas ensure plenty of locations to soak in the views or socialise with new-found friends. Coral Discoverer , with its outward facing staterooms is the smallest ship in the fleet and has the feel of a private expedition yacht. It’s no coincidence that a fine collection of Australian Indigenous art is showcased across all three ships, offering an alluring cultural introduction to any Kimberley cruise.

More Details

King George River and Falls

Today we discover the first of the Kimberley's 'big' rivers, the mighty King George. Aboard Xplorer, our specially designed excursion vessel, we'll explore scenic gorges, and in our inflatable Zodiacs we'll cruise close to the base of magnificent King George Falls, the tallest waterfalls in Western Australia towering some 80 metres above the river below. Later, we visit Tranquil Bay for beach walking and exploration.

Vansittart Bay C53 and Jar Island

Join our Expedition Leader on a walk across salt flats to view the wreckage of a US Air Force C53 which crash landed on the beach during WWII. Later, visit Jar Island and discover the island's outstanding rock art gallery. Our Guest Lecturers will point out fine examples of the Kimberley's mysterious Bradshaw Paintings (Gwion), dating back some 20,000 years.

Hathaway's Hideaway and Mitchell Falls

After anchoring in Winyalken Bay we travel ashore aboard Explorer to explore the maze of natural sandstone caves known as Hathaway's Hideaway (if no optional Heli Flights over Mitchell Falls are booked).

Helicopters are available for optional scenic flights over the Mitchell Plateau for close up views of the mighty four-tiered Mitchell Falls. This evening, enjoy a spectacular Indian Ocean sunset as we indulge in a gourmet Aussie Beach BBQ.

Bigge Island and Careening Bay

Guided beach walk and then discover the rock art gallery on Bigge Island, featuring fine examples of both Wandjina and Contact art. Explore Careening Bay which was named by Phillip Parker King after his ship 'HMC Mermaid' was careened during his second voyage of discovery in the Kimberley. Our lecturers lead us to the site of a large boab tree bearing the inscription "HMC Mermaid 1820", still clearly visible almost 200 years later.

Prince Regent River and King Cascades

We cruise the mighty Prince Regent River aboard Xplorer to breathtaking King Cascades, an unusual and picturesque waterfall cascading over terraced rock formations. Enjoy a picnic lunch at beautiful Camp Creek, where there is time for a leisurely swim in the fresh water pools. The more adventurous may wish to join a nature walk, keeping an eye out for native Kimberley bird life.

Montgomery Reef and Doubtful Bay

Today savour a truly unforgettable moment as Montgomery Reef 'rises' out of the ocean as the tide ebbs. Join our Expedition Staff aboard the Explorer and zodiacs to experience this natural phenomenon up close and discover the reef's diverse marine life including turtles, and reef sharks.

Cruising through Kuri Bay, home of the south sea pearl industry, travel ashore at Raft Point and visit a secluded and very interesting Aboriginal rock art gallery to view Wandjina art and the mysterious Bradshaw Paintings (Gwion).

Horizontal Falls and Buccaneer Archipelago

Cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago, home to over 800 islands. In Talbot Bay, the region's 12 metre tides create an amazing spectacle, the unique Horizontal Falls, described by legendary naturalist David Attenborough as "one the greatest natural wonders in the world". Board the zodiacs for an exhilarating, ride through the falls. Later, explore Silica Beach on Hidden Island with its stunning white sands and crystal clear waters.

Lacepede Islands

Cruise through Pender Bay and, subject to weather and tides, visit the Lacepede Islands, a series of low islands consisting of coarse sand and coral rubble lying atop a platform reef. This nature reserve has been identified by Bird Life International as an Important Bird Area as it supports up to 18,000 breeding pairs of Brown Boobies and Roseate Terns, possibly the largest such population in the world. Board the zodiacs and explore the island's lagoon, keeping an eye out for many species of marine birdlife including Australian Pelicans, frigatebirds, egrets, gulls and terns. The islands are also renowned as Western Australia's most significant breeding grounds for the Green Turtle, often seen nesting on the islands. Kimberley waterfall Experiences with true north cruise

Kimberley coast cruises 2024

The very best of two destinations.

An adventure that combines the very best of two equally stunning destinations – the Kimberley coast and the Rowley Shoals! In the beginning your vista will be framed by layers of ancient geology and then your every moment will be awash in the vibrant colours of a coral wonderland. See all of the coastal icons and then immerse yourself in one of the world’s most-rare habitats!

This itinerary is provided as example only – prevailing conditions, local arrangements and indeed, what we discover on the day, may cause variation. Helicopter flights can be purchased additional to the indicated tariff as a package or individually. Please refer to the sailing schedule to determine if this itinerary is available on the TRUE NORTH or TRUE NORTH II.

Welcome Aboard

Welcome Aboard

Join our coach transfer in Kununurra – your “welcome aboard” the magnificent TRUE NORTH will be in the frontier town of Wyndham. Embarkation is at 1700 – time for a cocktail with your fellow adventurers before departing at approximately 1830. Dinner is served shortly after leaving port and then it’s an overnight steam to the King George River.

The King George Falls

The King George Falls

As soon as the tide is high enough, we’ll cross the sand bar at the mouth of the mighty King George to reveal a breathtaking river vista. Our journey upstream will take us to the very ‘jewel in the crown’ – The King George Falls. Here we anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and you will find endless places to explore. Take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a Kimberley highlight. In the afternoon discover the wreck of the Koolama and take a stroll in Tranquil Bay.

Eagle Falls

Eagle Falls

Today you will have an opportunity to see the “Bradshaws” – ancient rock art that pre-dates other examples of Aboriginal culture. In fact, they are possibly the oldest ‘paintings’ known to man. The heli-picnic at Eagle Falls is always a ‘big hit’ - another breathtaking helicopter flight and, TRUE NORTH’s mouth-watering fare alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in remote far-north Western Australia! The tenders will be busy exploring the local beaches and rivers and, we also visit an isolated site in the rainforest where a lone bomber crashed during WWII.

The Mitchell Falls

The Mitchell Falls

The Mitchell River is renowned for big barra and even bigger crocs! The adventure boats will head up river to scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim (no crocs here!) The fishers will stalk the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls! Then, join the crew for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.

The Hunter River

The Hunter River

Wake this morning in the magnificent Hunter River. The Hunter is about as far away as you can get in Australia – a stunning river system that is lined with dense mangrove forests and surrounded by rainforest encrusted mountains. And, the Hunter has it all - fishing, mud crabbing, birdwatching and simply exploring “where few have been before!” Join one of our adventure boats for a closer look, it’s a challenging hike to Jackson Falls and, there’s even more splendour from the helicopter! In the afternoon we will sail into Prince Frederick Harbour and enjoy sunset drinks on picturesque Crystal Beach – enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres as you watch the sun descend on another action-packed day in the Kimberley!

Melaleuca Falls

Melaleuca Falls

Be amongst the first on deck and join an early morning fishing expedition, see more stunning rock art or join the ship’s naturalist in one of the adventure boats – all before a breathtaking helicopter flight to another picnic to remember – this time at beautiful Melaleuca Falls! Then join us for our pearl and diamond party! Enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst trying on exquisite pieces created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

King Cascade

King Cascade

The scenery will astound and there are some not to be missed fishing spots as the TRUE NORTH graces the majestic Prince Regent River. At King Cascade we manoeuvre the TRUE NORTH right under the falls. Then it’s time for more ‘adventure in the tender’ – a chance to stretch the laces on your hiking boots and an opportunity to swim in yet another picture perfect billabong, or perhaps you’d like to venture further upriver to visit the spectacular ‘Amphitheatre’ waterfall. And the helicopter will be popular again when the first group of intrepid explorers returns from Jurassic Park!

Montgomery Reef

Montgomery Reef

It’s time for some hot fishing action at Three Ways. Then join guest and crew alike for a moderate walk to Ruby Falls and be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the large natural rock pool.

You will probably be enjoying lunch as we weigh anchor and set sail for Montgomery Reef! Montgomery is a unique ecosystem that must be seen to be believed – and see it you will – as 140 square miles of coral reef rises out of the ocean right before your very eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a privileged glimpse of another world! Turtles, dugong, manta rays and every imaginable sea creature abound, and the helicopter again puts all in perspective!

The Charnley Gorge

The Charnley Gorge

Even more high adventure today – the opportunity to ‘ride the tide’ through spectacular Charnley Gorge, to where the salt meets the fresh – is one of the Kimberley’s most hand-picked experiences! This is especially so if you then get a chance to sight-cast ravenous barra as they wait for the tide to spill into their billabong home away from home! Jacks, fingermark and threadfin will also be on the ‘list’ before returning to the TRUE NORTH for your overnight cruise to the magnificent Rowley Shoals!

Clerke Reef

Clerke Reef

We will arrive early at glorious Clerke Reef.

Sample the fruit platter and maybe indulge in a cooked breakfast before discovering the atoll’s huge lagoon and extensive outer reef. Snorkelers and divers will marvel at the crystal-clear waters teeming with life – clouds of fish and corals of every imaginable colour and shape. There will be plenty of opportunity for beachcombing on Bedwell Island, relaxed snorkelling in tropical waist deep water, world-class SCUBA diving on the outer reef or perhaps some “catch and release” lagoon fishing using eco-friendly tackle. Our qualified and experienced crew will be on-hand to personally introduce everyone to the delights of this pristine environment. When you’re not on excursion, relax on-board TRUE NORTH and indulge in our renowned cuisine – the alfresco bar and lounge will definitely be ‘the spot’ to witness your first spectacular Rowley sunset.

Nature's Aquarium

Nature's Aquarium

Start the day with a visit to the Aquarium! Forget the Great Barrier Reef – this is world-class snorkelling at its very best! Even if you’ve never put your head under water before – this is an absolute must. The water is only waist deep however the experience is literally “out of this world”! Brilliantly coloured corals, giant clams and more than 600 of the world’s most beautiful fish species at your fingertips! Don’t forget your underwater camera!

After another sumptuous lunch we’ll “crank-up the action” with something unique – high-speed snorkel drifts through the outer reef! Again our friendly crew members will be on hand to ensure that everyone gets to try this once-in-a lifetime experience – as many times as you like! Our anchorage tonight is in the “swimming pool like” waters of Clerke Lagoon – 300 kilometres off the coast of Australia!

Close Encounters

Close Encounters

Another day in paradise and now it’s time to experience the thrill of snorkelling on the outer reef! Outer reef snorkelling is a totally different experience – the sheer coral walls will take your breath away!

Close encounters with humpback whales, manta rays and sailfish are also on the agenda. Finish the day with sunset drinks on the beach and one of our famous Island Parties! Then it’s back to the ultimate comfort of TRUE NORTH and another perfect night in Clerke Lagoon – 360° stars reflected in a glassy ocean!

The Outer Reef

The Outer Reef

By now you will be addicted to snorkelling on the outer reef and your wish is our command! We’ll spend the entire day exploring the outer reef of this remote and untouched wilderness.

Then all too soon, it’s time for our overnight steam to Broome. Re-live what is guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime as the Rowleys merge into a blazing western sky! Join the crew at the Captain’s Party and then enjoy “the best sleep of your life”.

Transfer to Broome

Returning to International

True North’s founding director Craig Howson and managing director Chad Avenell, recently met with local representatives ahead of recommencing Indonesian itineraries in 2023. Watch the video above to discover how True North ensures smooth operation well in advance of departure.

Time to Book Ahead

Hear from someone who truly knows about the value of booking ahead. “Cheggers” has travelled on the TRUE NORTH more than anyone else!

True North Sails into 30 Years

True North Adventure Cruises - has sailed into 30 years of continuous operations. The now revered adventure-cruise operator first cruised Western Australia’s remote Kimberley coast during 1987 when founding director Craig Howson commenced fishing type charters along a coastline that was and still is largely inaccessible from land.

The Helicopter

Adding another dimension to the adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH feature an on-board helicopter! Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness!

Myles Pollard's Fishing Adventure

There is nothing better than a day out on the water, especially when the fish are biting! Fishing on-board the TRUE NORTH is a much-favoured activity both with guests who have never picked up a rod before and, with those who have "caught them all!” Our guides encourage everybody on-board to “give it a go” and the TRUE NORTH’s multiple adventure boats never fail to bring back a swag of ‘fishing tales’! Stories about the ladies who out-fish the boys are pretty common, humorous equipment failures also come to note on a regular basis, then there are the ‘birthday fish’, the ‘monster fish’ and of course, the ones that got away! Our guides have seen and heard it all! Watch the video to find out more about actor Myles Pollard's fishing adventure!

TRUE NORTH Impresses Again

The TRUE NORTH has once again impressed on the world stage coming second in the 2020 Traveller Made Brand Storytelling competition. Traveller Made is Europe’s largest travel consortium and its members represent the very best in luxury travel providers and suppliers. The group’s inaugural Brand Storytelling competition was an opportunity for leading travel brand’s to showcase “the story behind their brand” and, the competition attracted entries from some of the world’s most respected travel brands. In such esteemed company, True North’s marketing team was especially pleased to receive this additional acknowledgement.

Adventure En Plein Air

West Australian artist Jacob 'Shakey' Butler joined the TRUE NORTH earlier this season and discovered the Kimberley's raw beauty. As the artist in residence, Jacob set up his canvas on remote beaches, beside freshwater billabongs and on-deck surrounded by pindan-coloured gorges. Watch the video above to hear Jacob describing how the Kimberley inspires the art of adventure.

Catriona Rowntree Talks With Craig Howson

A commonly asked question is “When is the best time to see the Kimberley?” And the answer is “The Kimberley is always at its best!” However certain times of the year can make it easier to satisfy particular interest. For example, if you would like to see plenty of whale action then departures in August and September are definitely for you! From late July humpback and southern right whales reach the Kimberley after swimming-up the west coast to reach breeding grounds in the north and it’s very common for guests to get great views of whales breaching and basking on the surface.

Newly refurbished in 2019.

Why we loved our Kimberley Cruise aboard Reef Prince...

"... just so relaxed, exactly what we wanted from our holiday.".

Quotemark open graphic

We just loved the number of passengers on board the Reef Prince; small enough to get to know everyone; we were like an extended family our Kimberley holiday together. And we all had a similar philosophy to see as much as we could on our Kimberley cruise. The crew all became our friends by the end of the cruise, and all were extremely attentive and so knowledgeable when explaining the Kimberley coast’s features and history.

Every point of coastline we rounded, there was something new to see, two and a half thousand kms of coastline, and you never tire of the views!

We commented to other guests about why the Reef Prince was so quiet when cruising and when we did ask the skipper, he advised that it was due to the advanced catamaran design.

We loved the spacious communal areas with big comfy couches and chairs in the lounge area, as well as the sun lounges on the deck. You could share a drink with new friends or sit and relax watching the horizon. The onboard feel of our Reef Prince cruise was just so relaxed, exactly what we wanted from our holiday.

Just a wonderful experience!”

KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

The Kimberley Expedition Port Highlights

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a Zodiac® to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a Zodiac® ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. As you explore one of the ‘greatest natural wonders of the world’, you’ll search for incredible marine wildlife in their natural habitat from your Zodiac® – dolphins, octopuses, fish, reef sharks, turtles, sea snakes and more.

Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls

Expect the unexpected amongst the spectacular rock formations and lush mangroves. Most waterfalls cascade vertically, but here tides push intense currents between narrow gorges to create a horizontal effect.

Featured Included Shore Excursions

Kuri bay pearl farm, traditional face painting ceremony, el questro park.

Cruise vacations are a wonderful way to visit multiple destinations in one trip and unpack only once. And while cruises may not give people multiple days in each destination, it acts as a sampler for people to discover new places that they may possibly want to return to later.

Top Luxury Cruise Destinations

Knowing when to visit and what to explore can help people make the right decision for which to cruise take. The Caribbean and Mexico are the most common cruise destinations that people may think of, there are plenty of other bucket list destinations worth exploring. Here are some of the most popular among them and some of the latest news in the cruise industry .

1. Mediterranean

Villefranche-sur-mer on the French Riviera in summer

From Spain to Turkey and everywhere in between, these are highly popular sailings that can book up quickly. The best time to travel is during the summer months when the most ships are sailing in the Mediterranean, but prepare for hot weather. Many cruise lines move their ships to the Caribbean during the winter months.

The Spanish coastline, French Riviera, Amalfi Coast, Greek islands and Turkish ports are some of the highlight destinations on these routes. Among the busiest departure ports for these cruises are Athens, Rome (Civitavecchia) and Barcelona, and some travelers like to extend their cruise with a pre- or post-cruise stay in these cities. Taking a cruise here is a great way to visit many countries in one trip.

Amazon Prime Video’s Best New Show Arrives With A Perfect 100% Critic Score

Apple s iphone 16 pro design revealed in new leak, charlotte shooting 4 officers killed while serving warrant.

Ilma will sail its inaugural season in the Mediterranean.

Among the new ships in the region for this year is Silversea’s Silver Ray, the second in the Nova class for the line. The new Sun Princess from Princess Cruises started sailing the Med this year. The second yacht in the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is Ilma, which will start sailing in the Mediterranean later this year. Also new for the season is the National Geographic Day Tours sailings from Holland America that give travelers the change to sail with a National Geographic trained guide and explore ports with an expert.

MSC World Europa is the first Liquified Natural Gas-fueled ship in the company's fleet. The company ... [+] has a goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions for its entire fleet.

MSC Euribia and MSC World Europa are two of the most popular ships to sail in the region. The European-based company is especially appealing for travelers because its ships board new passengers every day unlike other cruises that start and end on a particular date. This schedule flexibility means travelers can choose which ports where they want to embark. Its ships have numerous specialty restaurants, engaging theater shows and family-friendly pool areas.

Another cruise line, SeaDream, operates differently than other companies by arriving in busy ports in the afternoon when most other cruise passengers are reboarding their ships. SeaDream then stays until midnight, or sometimes overnight, to give travelers the chance to explore without “people pollution.”

2. Australia and New Zealand

The famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge

These cruises showcase some of the top destinations down under. The best time to take a cruise is between December and February, which is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The weather can be quite warm, but it is an ideal time to see major cities like Sydney and Auckland, explore the Great Barrier Reef or the Kimberley region on the Australian west coast. For those that want to extend their trip, they can visit major tourist sights like Ayers Rock in the center of the country and wine country regions in both countries.

The Kimberley region in Australia is a new destination for Seabourn.

New for the season is Seabourn Pursuit, which will sail the Kimberley region, the first time Seabourn visits the region. To honor the new itinerary, the cruise line named the Western Kimberley traditional land owners, the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation, as godparents of Seabourn Pursuit . Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, part of the Abercrombie & Kent brand, will sail around both countries this spring.

Oceania Cruises is known for its overnight stays in cities in the South Pacific including Melbourne and Bali in Indonesia .

Snow melts slowly from the mountains as spring approaches at the end of May in south-central Alaska

Glacier Bay National Park and the Hubbard Glacier are top sights on an Alaska cruise sailing, which is best during the spring and summer months when the temperatures are not frigid. Sailings typically take place between April and October. Holland America is a leader in this part of the world, but many cruise lines send their ships here for the dramatic scenery. This is one of those ideal trips for a multi-generational trip.

Edge is one of the newest ships in the cruise line's fleet.

New for the season is Celebrity Edge, a dramatic ship with a cantilevered bar and restaurant known as the Magic Carpet and attached to the side of the ships and can be lowered closer to sea level for an up-close look at stunning glaciers. Among the top news for Alaska’s cruise ports is a new cruise terminal in the state capital, Juneau, and a new 28-day sailing from Holland America. Don’t miss the new seasonal drink “Killer Whale Pale Ale,” which Holland America is launching this year on its Alaska sailings.

4. Antarctica

Cruises sail through the Lemaire Channel

Cruises are the most common way to visit Antarctica, and there are all kinds of ships of varying sizes and price points. These are typically not cheap trips, but it is one of the most bucket list trips you can take. The cruise season in Antarctica is between November and February, which is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Don’t be fooled though, it will still be cold.

These sailings give passengers the chance to set foot on this remote continent amid massive glaciers and snow-covered mountains. Bird spotting and thousands of penguins are just some of the animal life people will see. Many travelers like to take the Arctic plunge when they jump into the frigid water for a brief second.

Scenic Eclipse II has its own helicopter.

Atlas Ocean just christened two Polar ships that will sail from Patagonia to Antarctica. Seabourn Venture is an expedition ship that was christened in Antarctica and is a great way to enjoy nature without giving up luxury. Don’t miss Scenic Eclipse II, which is an elegant yacht that comes equipped with a helicopter for birds eye views and a submarine for fisheye photo opps.

5. Panama Canal

The Panama Canal has cruise and cargo ships passing through.

Going through the locks of the Panama Canal gives travelers an up-close experience of this architectural marvel. Between November and April, taking a cruise around Central America and passing through the canal is ideal since temperatures are not as hot and humid as the summer. Some cruise lines move their ships between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans when they change destinations for the season. A popular itinerary is Viking’s Classic Panama Canal Passage, which sails from Fort Lauderdale through the canal and visits Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama.

A pair of Star Clippers ships

If you’ve done the Panama Canal cruise, consider a Suez Canal sailing, which explores the Greek Islands before crossing the canal to visit ports in Egypt. Guests can take an excursion to visit the Pyramids, which is a highlight of this itinerary. Star Clippers takes its majestic sailing ships with tall white masts on these trips. If you want a true sailing experience, Star Clippers is a great option.

An aerial view of the fishing boats in Zanzibar

Taking a cruise to ports along Africa’s coastline is a great way to visit multiple places without worrying about getting difficult visas for each country or finding a comfortable place to say. There are many different itineraries including around the southern tip to ports of South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique. Others visit remote islands like Madagascar, Mauritius, Zanzibar and the Seychelles.

Azamara Quest visits the west coast of Africa.

The best time to visit is in the spring and fall as this means temperatures are not as hot as summer and also when cruise lines make these itineraries as they move ships to different regions. One of the most exciting (and quick to sell out) sailings is along parts of the west coast of the continent visiting places like the Bissagos Island chain, Sao Tome and Principe, Benin, Senegal and Gambia. Many travelers like to tack on a safari before or after their sailing.

Azamara Quest and Norwegian Sky are two of the most popular cruise ships that make these sailings. Azamara is known for its itineraries that remain in ports until late in the evening or even overnight giving travelers more time in each destination. For the 2025-2026 cruise season, Oceania Cruises will add new overnight stays in Mauritius, too.

Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam

Spotting the Northern Lights or sailing through panoramic fjords is often best experienced by ship. Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam sails through the Nordic countries during the summer months, the best time to visit the region since temperatures are not as cold. The newly launched Queen Anne from Cunard, which takes its first sailing in May, will sail around the British Islands and make its way to Norway to explore the fjords.

Hurtigruten Expeditions, a Norwegian company, operates its own series of sailings all along the coastline. The cruise line got its start here operating ferry ships bringing mail, supplies and other goods to remote parts of the country. Many of them also carry passengers that want to experience a smaller ship that visits different towns while also sailing through the fjords.

A Viking cruise ship sailing through the Norwegian fjords.

Another Nordic brand famous for its river and cruise ships is Viking, which operates its luxury ships carrying just under 1,000 passengers on signature itineraries like “Viking Homeland.” Viking Vela is one of the ships to make this journey, and Viking sailings are all-inclusive with drinks, all meals at specialty restaurants and excursions making it a great way to visit this region.

8. The Galapagos Islands

Galapagos sea lions (Zalophus wollebaeki) are sunbathing in the last sunlight at the beach of ... [+] Espanola island, Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. This species of sea lion is endemic at the Galapagos islands; In the background one of the typical tourist yachts is visible. Wildlife shot.

Sailing between these Ecuadorian islands is beautiful for the bird watching and animal spotting from the region’s famous tortoises, iguanas and penguins. Cruise ships in this region are limited in size by regulations to preserve the marine environment. Hurtigruten Santa Cruz II is one of the larger ships that operates several itineraries in the archipelago.

Celebrity Flora is based in the Galapagos Islands.

Among the most luxurious ships sailing the islands is Celebrity Flora, a purpose-built ship for the Galapagos with cabanas on its top deck, a marine biology exploration center and beautiful cabins with electronically controlled windows that allow cabins to feel larger.

Why the best way to see Australia is on a cruise

K nown for its epic road and rail trips through the vast, open countryside of the dusty Outback , Australia is often overlooked by Brits as a cruise destination. Yet the world’s largest island has over 37,000 miles of coastline fronting the Southern, Pacific and Indian Oceans, plus various smaller seas. Even the locals know the appeal of the sea, with 85 per cent of Australians living within 50km of the coast.

As a result, almost every kind of cruise imaginable can be found here; be it on a mega-ship with stacks of facilities; a boutique brand with a more refined air; a luxurious riverboat; or an expedition ship that can venture to truly out-of-the-way places. And with most of Australia's key attractions and cities scattered around its fringes, explorations by cruise (preferably topped and tailed with land-based touring) can pack any number of Down Under wonders into a single trip.

I've been lucky enough to visit Australia more than a dozen times, and some of my greatest memories are of experiences that I've had from the deck of a ship. I once set sail to New Zealand from Sydney, with the tiles atop the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine as we passed, and far from land on the Great Barrier Reef, I leaned over the railings to marvel at its underwater patchwork of cobalt and turquoise in an otherwise midnight-blue sea.

Perhaps the most incredible experience of all was a cruise in the Kimberley : the little-visited wilderness region at the top of Western Australia. It's vast and sparsely populated – bigger than Britain but with fewer residents than a mid-sized English town – and its attractions are so remarkable that they would be crowded with visitors were they easier to access. But on a small-ship sailing with Coral Expeditions, I was one of just 120 guests exploring the waterfalls, reefs and ancient rock art for which the Kimberley is famed.

At the uninhabited Lacepede Islands, we saw seabirds and turtles in mind-boggling numbers. In Talbot Bay, we powered through one-of-a-kind Horizontal Falls in a Zodiac. And at Montgomery Reef, we watched a coral-encrusted plateau seemingly rise from the sea on a falling tide.

It wasn’t only the epic landscapes and their intriguing wildlife – humpback whales, lemon sharks, saltwater crocs – that impressed. Etched in my memory is the experience of first seeing the Wandjina (ancient rock art). These alien beings stare down from rock art galleries across the region: a symbol of the oldest continuous culture on the planet, and of the Indigenous people's long connection to the land. A land littered with surprises best experienced by boat.

Classic Kimberley

Remote, isolated and with little infrastructure for land-based journeys, there are few parts of the world as suited to expedition cruises as the Kimberley. Explore it with Coral Expeditions – the pioneers of cruising in the region – on a formula perfected over four decades of operations. Itineraries are timed to experience key sites at optimal tidal phases: expect to see Montgomery Reef being drained by dozens of miniature cascades, and Horizontal Falls at its powerful best.

How to do it

Ten-night cruises between Darwin and Broome with Coral Expeditions operate between April and September and cost from £3,965pp; excludes flights.

Aussie icons

Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef are two of Australia’s most recognisable icons. Experience both with Princess Cruises, whose journeys up the eastern seaboard from Sydney to tropical North Queensland stop in Cairns for reef and Daintree Rainforest excursions, and Airlie Beach, gateway to the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands.

How to do it

A 16-night Sydney & Queensland Showcase cruise-and-stay from Cruise Kings (0800 197 8050) includes an 11-night round-trip cruise from Sydney aboard Majestic Princess and a three-night pre-cruise Sydney stay from £2,799pp. Departs January 26 & March 26 2024;  departs September 8 2023; includes flights. .

Southern comforts

Make the festive season extra-special on a cruise along Australia’s entire south coast, taking in nine ports of call. Esperance, Adelaide, Cape Le Grand National Park and Kangaroo Island are among the highlights, with shore excursion that include wine tastings and local wildlife sightings. Better still, spend Christmas Day at sea before arriving in Sydney for a two-night stay that coincides with New Year’s Eve.

The 14-night Australia Intensive Voyage from Perth to Melbourne with Azamara Cruises (0344 4934016) departs December 21 2023 & December 20 2024 and costs from £2,859pp. Excludes flights.

Over the top

Nobody is more qualified to share Australia’s stories than its traditional owners and custodians. On a voyage through remote Barrier Reef islands en route to Cape York and Arnhem Land, you will meet indigenous Torres Strait islanders and other Aboriginal peoples to experience their culture, art and homelands, including Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. Along the way, spy dugongs, turtles, saltwater crocodiles and the birdlife of Kakadu’s wetlands.

A 13-night Australia's Top End cruise from Cairns to Darwin with Scenic (0808 273 6069; scenic.co.uk ) departs April 28 2024 and costs from £11,108pp. Excludes flights.

Murray river flow

River cruises are rare down under, making an active experience on the mighty Murray – the nation’s principal waterway – all the more remarkable. Murray River Trails offers short cruises aboard a 12-berth houseboat, with a daily programme of guided walks and activities. The small-group, into-the-wild nature of the experience lends itself to wildlife encounters, with sightings of echidnas, emus, koalas and unusual native birds all possible. It is a fascinating insight into authentic inland Australia.

The three-night Murray River Walk departs May–Sep and costs from £1,500pp. Excludes flights.

Kim and swim

The Kimberley may have beguiling blue waters, but dips in the sea are foolhardy (and forbidden) due to the dangerous saltwater crocodiles that call the region home. Sidestep that inconvenience on a voyage with Ponant, which combines classic Kimberley elements (Montgomery Reef, Horizontal Falls) with the little-visited Rowley Shoals – one of the world’s most sensational snorkelling and diving destinations. Located west of Broome, in the Timor Sea, these croc-free coral atolls brim with colourful sea life.

An eight-night cruise round-trip from Broome departs September 8 2023 and costs from £11,835pp through Mundy Adventures (020 7399 7630; mundyadventures.co.uk ); includes flights.

Queensland immersion

Take a deep dive down under on a Great Barrier Reef & Beyond itinerary with Windstar Cruises. This holiday is particularly good for wildlife-lovers. Look out for wedge-tailed shearwaters, sooty terns and noddies while passing Willis Island; spot dingoes on sandy Fraser Island; and cuddle a koala at Australia Zoo (established by the late Steve Irwin). Show-stopping Whitehaven Beach is an unforgettable trip highlight.

An 11-night sailing from Cairns to Melbourne with Windstar Cruises (0808 178 2233; windstarcruises.com ) departs December 6 2023 and costs from £7,499pp. Includes flights and pre-cruise overnight in Cairns.

Western wonders

Unlike the Barrier Reef, which clings to the continental shelf, magnificent Ningaloo Reef fringes Western Australia’s coast. Discover it and the archipelagos of Abrolhos, Monte Bello and Dampier on a small-ship expedition that mixes snorkelling and shipwrecks with whale-watching and indigenous rock art. Enhance the experience by foraging and fishing for mud crabs and oysters, or take sightseeing to new heights in the ship’s helicopter.

How to do it

The 10-night West Coast Explorer cruise with True North sails from Fremantle to Dampier on March 7 2024 and costs from £12,208pp. Excludes flights

Island state

Raw nature meets colonial history and premium produce in Tasmania, not to mention one-of-a-kind wildlife such as white wallabies and Tasmanian devils. Sip local cool-climate wines and visit the likes of Bruny Island and Wineglass Bay while sailing from Hobart. The cruise is complemented with a self-drive exploration of the island’s west and north coast regions.

A 17-night holiday with Tasmanian Odyssey (01534 735449) combining Coral Expeditions' 10-night Coastal Wilds or Coastal Treks cruise with a 7-night self-drive land tour costs from £5,475pp. Departs Jan–Feb 2024 & 2025; excludes flights.

All the way

Go all out and see more of the continent on a full circumnavigation of the vast island. Sail the Coral, Timor and Tasman Seas, the Indian Ocean and the Great Australian Bight on an odyssey starting and finishing in Sydney. Travelling via every coastal state and territory, ports of call include cosmopolitan Melbourne, tropical Darwin, lively Fremantle and Phillip Island with its unforgettable koala and penguin encounters.

A 34-night Australian Panorama sailing with Oceania Cruises is available through Mundy Cruising (020 7399 7670; mundycruising.co.uk ) from £8,729pp, including flights. Departs December 22 2024.
