Costs OpenClose
Paying your credit card, making a payment.
The most common way to pay is by Direct Debit. Once you’ve set it up, the payment will be taken automatically each month from your chosen bank account. You can choose to pay the minimum amount, the minimum payment plus, a fixed amount or your full credit balance every month.
You can also make a payment in the mobile app or digital banking.
If you want to understand how quickly you could clear your balance, use our repayment calculator .
Things to remember
If you set up a Direct Debit for the minimum, minimum payment plus, fixed or full amount the payment is claimed 25 calendar days from the statement date, or shortly afterwards.
Other charges or fees
Late paying.
If you’re late paying, we’ll charge you a fee of £12. That’s why setting up a Direct Debit makes sense – you’ll never be late paying again. We get that little mistakes are easy to make, so if you miss your payment due date by just one day, we won't charge you the late payment fee.
Over your limit
If you go over your limit we’ll charge you a fee of £12. If you only go over your limit by £12 or less, we won’t charge you. A good way to avoid going over your limit is to log onto NatWest Online Banking or fire up our mobile app and check you balance before you make your next card purchase.
For full details of fees, please see the Summary Box in the Ready to apply section below.
Card Features OpenClose
Spread the cost of your purchase.
Like most UK credit cards, our range of cards offer 56 days interest free credit on purchases if you pay your balance (and your previous month's balance) in full and on time each month. That means if you want to make a large purchase, for example a holiday or a new gadget, a credit card could be a good way to help you buy now and spread the cost.
Instalment Plans
You will need the Royal Bank mobile app to set up, track and manage an Instalment Plan. Then, you can repay eligible credit card purchases or expired 0% balance transfer offers between £100 and £3000 inclusive. If Instalment Plans are available to you, we’ll let you know via our mobile banking app by adding an ‘eligible instalment plan flag’ to your transaction, or as a notification when your 0% balance transfer offer has expired.
With an Instalment Plan, you can:
- Pay back your purchase over a set period that suits you. This can be between 3 to 24 months.
- Avoid interest and pay a set fee each month instead. The fee could end up being cheaper than your standard credit card interest rate.
- Make an easy repayment budget by avoiding hidden costs.
Learn more about Instalment Plans and how to create one
What you should keep in mind
- Instalment Plans are for existing credit card customers only, eligibility criteria and monthly fees apply.
- To be eligible your transaction needs to be either on your latest statement or applied to your account since your last statement was produced. You cannot have a cash balance on your credit card account.
- Your monthly payments and fee will vary according to the size of your purchase and how long you’re taking out the plan for.
- The Instalment Plan counts as existing credit limit, which means you can’t free up additional funds by moving a purchase to an Instalment Plan. The Instalment Plan should be lower than your usual repayment interest on your card.

Mobile App Features OpenClose
Lock and unlock your credit card.
We want to make managing your credit card simple and safe. If you have misplaced your credit card, you can lock and unlock it in the app. You can also use the app to request a PIN reminder or unblock your PIN. This feature applies to Mastercard credit cards only.
Get to know your spending habits
Setting a daily or monthly budget could help you manage your spending. You can also use the app to lock certain transaction types. If you accidentally go over budget, we’ll send you a notification as a wee reminder. Managing your card is simple too - you can set up a direct debit, check or pay off your balance, adjust your credit limit and much more.
Keep an eye on your credit score
You can get your credit score and view some of the key details that help to calculate your score all for free in the app, so it's easier to plan ahead. You can find it within your Profile and check it as many times as you like without it affecting your credit score. Credit score is available once opted in through the app, to customers aged 18+ with a UK address, and is provided by TransUnion.
Replace your credit card
Need a replacement card? No bother. If you have an iPhone, you can order a replacement for a lost or damaged credit card using the app. Select your credit card, tap ‘Manage my card’, then tap ‘Report lost, stolen or damaged’.
Let us know your travel plans
If you’re off globe-trotting, avoid those unexpected hitches by registering your travel plans through the app. This way, your card transactions are less likely to be flagged as suspicious or blocked while you’re abroad. You can create one travel plan at a time. Each travel plan can include up to seven countries and last for 90 days.

- Pay at point-of-sale machines in foreign countries,
- Withdraw local cash banknotes from foreign ATMs,
- Book or handle deposits for car rental agencies, hotels, or flights.
In addition, some credit cards also let you take advantage of travel insurance, rewards, cashback, and other exclusive benefits while travelling abroad. It's always a good idea to check with Bank of Scotland what benefits might apply to you before you travel so that you know what you can and cannot expect to take advantage of.
Bank of Scotland Credit Card Fees Abroad
Although they're easy and convenient to use abroad, Bank of Scotland credit cards come with some costs you should consider before travelling abroad. We've summarised them below (ignoring non-travel-related costs like annual fees, cash advance, and interest charges):
Verified: 3/3/2023
All told, these costs can lead to an unnecessarily pricey trip abroad. Let's break them down with a typical example:
Point of Sales Transactions
Suppose, for example, you're on holiday in Paris and decide to spend €100 on a boutique fashion item you like. You pay with your Bank of Scotland credit card. The first thing that happens behind the scenes will be the conversion of your pounds into euros. Fortunately, this occurs at the MasterCard exchange rate (which is generally within a few points of a percent of the actual mid-market exchange rate) without Bank of Scotland charging its own exchange rate on top of that. This means you won't pay much for exchanging currency, and you'd be paying 87.75 (at MasterCard's rate) instead of £87.91 (at the mid-market rate) on the final statement at the time of writing. Not a big deal, right?
However, it doesn't end there. Next, Bank of Scotland will hit you with a 0.0275 foreign exchange fee. This fee is rather high and leaves the final cost on your bank statement at £90.49 (approximately 0.0293 higher than a fair exchange). This may not sound like a lot, but consider that you'll be hit with this fee every time you tap your credit card, so it all stacks up quite quickly.
Cash Withdrawals
The costs are even more profound when using your Bank of Scotland credit card to withdraw cash. Sticking with our example, suppose you next wanted to withdraw €1,000 to get you through a few more days of Parisian spending. Here, you would again pay the MasterCard exchange rate plus the 0.0275 foreign exchange fee (this time amounting to £24.17). On top of this, you'd then pay an additional 0.0275 on the remaining amount (or £24.84 in this case).
After factoring in all these fees combined, the conversion on your bank statement would be a whopping £928.08 (that's 0.0573 or £50.28 higher than a fair exchange).
Better Alternatives
Fortunately, there are much more affordable ways to spend your pounds while travelling to Paris or anywhere else in the world. Below, we suggest two world-class UK-based alternatives for you to consider depending on your individual needs and preferences:

Nicky Kelvin from The Points Guy dives into ways to save this summer.
Many travelers have their sights set on summer getaways , but with everything from baggage fees to fuel costs impacting the price of a ticket, "Good Morning America" is asking travel experts to share tips for booking bucket list destinations on a budget and finding savings along the way.
Travel expert Nicky Kelvin, senior director of content for The Points Guy, offered his tips for affordable travel techniques.
Where to find the best flight deals
Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.
He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.
From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.
Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs
Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.
In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.
