Royal Caribbean cancels second Alaska sailing after technical issue

For the second week in a row, Royal Caribbean canceled an Alaska sailing on its Radiance of the Seas cruise ship.

“On its return to Seward, Alaska from a 7-night voyage that departed on Aug. 25, Radiance of the Seas experienced a technical issue with its propulsion system,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told USA TODAY. “Due to this, Radiance’s Sept. 1 and Sept. 8 sailings have been cancelled. All guests and travel partners have been notified.”

The cruise line is offering full refunds and future cruise credit to impacted guests. The credits may be used toward sailings departing within a year.

The reimbursement will include taxes and fees, pre-paid packages and gratuities, amenities, shore excursions and any flights purchased through the company, Royal Caribbean told Cruise Industry News .

“Repairs are currently underway, and Radiance is expected to sail as planned on Sept. 15 from Seward, Alaska,” Royal Caribbean said.

That Sept. 15th sailing is scheduled for seven nights, leaving Seward and continuing on to Hubbard Glacier, Juneau, Skagway, Haines, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan, Alaska before traveling to British Columbia’s Inside Passage and wrapping up in Vancouver, Canada, according to its published itinerary .

Radiance of the Seas made its maiden voyage in 2001, but has since undergone multi-million dollar updates . The ship can carry 2,466 guests and 894 crew members, according to the cruise line.

MIAMI, May 21, 2021* – Royal Caribbean International’s U.S. comeback marks its first step forward with the cruise line’s return to Alaska this summer. Today, the cruise vacation company announced plans to launch its Alaska season with 7-night cruises – roundtrip from Seattle – on returning favorites Serenade and Ovation of the Seas , beginning July 19 and August 13, respectively. After more than a year with cruising on pause and the significant impact its had on the beloved Alaskan communities, travelers can now chart a course for the culture-rich destinations they have looked forward to discovering while helping revive the local economies. The new summer 2021 Alaska cruises on Serenade and Ovation’s existing sailings are available to book today.

“Any traveler who visits Alaska immediately understands how special it is, given its natural beauty, the welcoming locals, and the culture carefully preserved over centuries,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “The past year has been a challenging time for us all, and the Alaskan communities heavily reliant on cruise tourism have felt it deeply. To see the communities, industry and government successfully pass a solution that will help bring these communities back to life shows the great progress and clear paths we can make together. Serenade will begin cruising in July, sailing roundtrip from Seattle – a change from its previously scheduled homeport in Vancouver. On board, the ship will deliver awe-inspiring views from its signature ocean-facing glass elevators and floor-to-ceiling windows as guests travel from one far-flung destination to the next. The week-long itinerary features a lineup of popular ports of call, including Juneau , Sitka , Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point , Alaska, as well as the jaw-dropping Endicott Arm fjord and Dawes Glacier .

Ovation follows suit in August for a different take on Alaskan adventure, pairing the region’s natural wonders and wildlife-filled fjords with a thrilling lineup of experiences on board. From the North Star glass observation capsule to the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator, vacationers can get their adrenaline pumping as they take in deck-defying sights of the scenic landscape and lush scenery of the destinations, such as the Inside Passage, Skagway, Sitka and Juneau, Alaska, from unparalleled viewpoints.

Travelers can plan their Alaska cruise with peace of mind knowing that all crew members and vacationers 16 years of age or older will be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and everyone 12 or older as of August 1. Those underage will receive a test prior to sailing. These measures are part of the cruise line’s Royal Promise commitment to the health and safety of every guest, crew member and community visited. The measures will be evaluated and updated as public health circumstances evolve. Royal Caribbean will continue to work closely with local health officials on specific measures outlined for the region.

Royal Caribbean Ship Sails on First Alaska Cruise for Brand in 2 Years

Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas left Seattle on Monday evening for the first big-ship cruise in Alaska in over two years.

The Serenade left from the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal on one of her seven-night itineraries and the first revenue cruise of the lineup of 83 scheduled voyages this year, which will each bring an estimated $4.2 million to the local economy, according to the port.

Guest, crew and community safety is paramount, with touchless features to limit crowding throughout the terminal and cruise ships, and vaccinations required of eligible travelers.

“The return of passenger cruise to Alaska marks a major milestone in our effort to reopen the regional economy,” said Steve Metruck, executive director of the Port of Seattle. “A year of work by national, state, and local officials and health authorities, cruise lines, and the Port established safety protocols throughout the traveler experience—from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to each of our cruise terminals. These safety measures will begin restoring the economic benefit from cruise in Seattle, responsible for creating 5,500 jobs and nearly $900 million to our region.”

“It’s exciting to see hundreds of travelers with their families back in Seattle to cruise to Alaska again. As Serenade of the Seas embarks on the first Alaska sailing since September 2019, it also marks another key milestone for Royal Caribbean and the industry – the return of cruising on the west coast,” said Mark Tamis, senior vice president, Hotel Operations, Royal Caribbean International. “Thanks to the collaboration with our partners in this great city and the region, including the Port of Seattle and Alaska, the benefits of cruise tourism will be felt across the local communities once again.
