Russell Brand postpones comedy tour following sexual assault allegations

Russell Brand has postponed his remaining U.K. comedy shows following the publication of multiple sexual abuse allegations against him over the weekend.

Brand was accused of sexual and emotional abuse by four women in a joint investigation by the Times of London, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches . The comedian turned wellness influencer denied the allegations, saying that all of his relationships have been consensual.

The Theatre Royale Windsor management announced that it would be suspending the end of Brand's current "Bipolarisation" comedy tour in a statement Monday.

"We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don’t like doing it — but we know you’ll understand," the statement said.

It's unclear whether the dates will be rescheduled. Theatre Royal Windsor said it will be issuing refunds in line with the venue's policies.

Russell Brand leaves a theater after performing a comedy set in London on Sept. 16, 2023.

The Times of London, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches spoke to four women, one of whom said she had a three month relationship with Brand when she was 16 years old.

That woman, who identified as Alice, said Brand was 31 at the time and alleged that he forced her to perform oral sex. Brand did not stop until she punched him in the stomach, she told The Times.

She also alleged that although she was of legal consenting age in the U.K., Brand guided her on how to present their relationship to her family and to save his contact under a different name. She also told The Times she reached out to Brand's literary agency in 2020 with her allegations.

Management agency Tavistock Wood said Sunday that they dropped Brand as a client , adding that they were "horribly misled" by him.

Another woman, who was identified by the name Nadia, accused Brand of raping her at his Los Angeles residence in 2012. She said Brand invited her to the home after they'd had consensual sex once before, but on this occasion wanted a "friend" to join them, according to The Times.

When she refused, Brand held her against a wall and raped her, Nadia alleged.

NBC News has not independently confirmed any of the allegations against Brand.

Metropolitan Police Service told NBC News that it received a report of sexual assault against Brand on Sunday, a day after the investigation's publication and a documentary that also aired Saturday.

The alleged sexual assault occurred in 2003, in London's Soho neighborhood, according to the police department.

"We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, no matter how long ago it was, to contact us," Metropolitan Police Service said.

Bluebird, a division of Pan McMillian, also said Monday that it was suspending its pending publications with Brand.

“These are very serious allegations and in the light of them, Bluebird has taken the decision to pause all future publishing with Russell Brand," the company said.

Brand has denied all of the allegations against him in a social media post.

“But amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute,” Brand said in a video.

Channel 4 confirmed that episodes of "Big Brother’s Big Mouth" and "The Great British Bake Off" which featured Brand have been removed from its streaming service. Brand worked with the network from 2004 and 2007, when some of the allegations occurred.

One staff member, a woman identified as Rachel, alleged to the Times that Brand flashed his penis at her in his dressing room and insinuated that she could perform oral sex on him.

Other crew members also alleged mistreatment from Brand in interviews with the times, including people who felt that they were working as a "pimp" for Brand as he pursued members of the audience for sex.

"We have asked the production company who produced the programmes for Channel 4 to investigate these allegations and report their findings properly and satisfactorily to us," the network said. "Channel 4 is also conducting its own internal investigation, and we would encourage anyone who is aware of such behaviour to contact us directly."

Russell Brand announces ‘Messiah Complex’ tour

  • Copy Link copied

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Russell Brand has a “Messiah Complex,” and he’s taking it on the road.

The British comedian announced Thursday that he’s launching a world comedy tour focusing on Che Guevara, Gandhi, Malcolm X and Jesus Christ. Brand says the show examines “the importance of heroes in this age of atheistic disposability.”

The 38-year-old says he plans to perform in theaters as well as “prisons, drug rehabs ... nationalist organizations, Mosques, foreclosed houses, protest sites, Synagogues and in people’s private homes.”

The “Messiah Complex” tour is set to begin Aug. 15 in Abu Dhabi and wrap up Dec. 9 in Iceland.

Brand’s FX show, “Brand X,” concluded last month.

Russell Brand Cancels Comedy Dates After Sexual Assault Allegations

The comedian was scheduled to perform three dates in Britain this month. Now they’ve been postponed.

Russell Brand, wearing a black jacket and black pants, stands onstage holding a microphone in his right hand.

By Alex Marshall

Russell Brand postponed the remaining dates of a comedy tour on Monday, two days after British news organizations published an investigation in which several women accused him of sexual assault.

Mr. Brand was scheduled to perform two shows as part of his “Bipolarisation” tour of Britain this week.

But in a statement provided on Monday by the Theater Royal Windsor, which was set to host Mr. Brand on Tuesday, the comedian’s promoters said the tour’s remaining dates would not go ahead. “We don’t like doing it,” the statement added, “but we know you’ll understand.”

On Friday, Mr. Brand denied what he called “serious criminal allegations” against him in a video posted to his YouTube channel. That statement was released shortly before three British news organizations published an investigation in which four women accused him of sexual assault, including one accusation of rape.

“Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute,” Mr. Brand said in the video, adding that past sexual encounters had been “always consensual.”

Since two newspapers, The Times of London and The Sunday Times of London, and Dispatches, a television program, published their joint investigation, several organizations associated with Mr. Brand have distanced themselves from the comedian and actor who had prominent roles in the 2008 rom-com “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and a 2011 remake of the movie “Arthur.”

On Monday, The Bookseller, a British trade magazine for the publishing industry, reported that Mr. Brand’s publisher , Bluebird, was pausing its work with the comedian. Bluebird had been scheduled to publish “Recovery: The Workbook,” a guide to overcoming addictions, on Dec. 28. Bluebird did not respond to a request for comment.

Later on Monday, London’s police force said in a statement that it had “received a report of a sexual assault which was alleged to have taken place in Soho in central London in 2003.”

British police forces never confirm the identity of an individual subject to a complaint, but the statement was issued in response to inquiries about the journalistic investigation into Mr. Brand.

Mr. Brand has yet to respond to that latest allegation. At midday E.D.T. on Monday, the comedian was scheduled to host a live broadcast on Rumble, a social media network associated with conservative voices, but he did not appear.

Russell Brand

Award-winning comedian.

Russell Brand is an award-winning comedian, known for his impeccable wit and his controversial, satirical take on celebrities, politicians, sex and drugs. A charismatic live performer, he incorporates many of his controversial public antics into his comedic material.

After starting out as a stand up comedian, who headlined Comedy Carnival between 2004 and 2007, Russell rose to fame as the host of Big Brother’s Big Mouth (Channel 4). Following solo shows at the Edinburgh Festival, he launched his nationwide tours with the awards swiftly following, including Best Newcomer, Best Stand Up and the British Comedy Award for Outstanding Contribution to Comedy.

He shot to fame in the USA after a major role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, enabling him to tour his stand up comedy the following year. Additional film roles, including Get Him To The Greek, Rock Of Ages and Arthur, plus five stand up specials, further assured his international comedic success.

One of the most notorious yet well-loved comedians in the UK and across the Atlantic, you’d struggle to find someone who hasn’t heard of Russell Brand. Daring and provocative, yet always loquacious and thoughtful, Russell Brand has never stopped pushing boundaries since his stage debut back in 2000.

Career Highlights

Since performing his first ever official stand-up show at Hackney Empire’s New Act of the Year in 2000, Brand has gone on to become one of the most famous British comedians in the world. From presenting and writing to DJing and acting, Brand is a Jack-of-all-trades in the entertainment world.

In his early career, Brand made his name performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the 2007 Royal Variety Performance, as well as Amnesty International’s 2006 Secret Policeman’s Ball. Not long after, he wrote his first solo stand-up show, Shame, which he toured the UK with in 2006. In 2012, he wrote his second solo stand-up tour named “Russell Brand: Only Joking”, which he again toured around the UK to glowing reviews from the public and critics alike.

It didn’t take long for Brand to conquer the states with his witty commentary and flamboyant humour, either: he performed his first stateside show, “Russell Brand in New York” for Comedy Central, before going on to complete his first USA stand-up tour in 2009, with his self-titled show Russell Brand: Scandalous.

Often swapping the stage for the big screen, Brand went on to star in many major Hollywood films, including Get Him to the Greek alongside Jonah Hill, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall alongside Kristen Bell. His latest role will be in BAFTA-award winner Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 remake of Death on the Nile .

Where can you find him?

So, where does Russell Brand live and spend his time now? While he once split his time between presenting, DJ-ing, acting and stand-up comedy, you’re now more likely to find him on his Youtube channel, which has now amassed over 5 million subscribers since he began regularly uploading commentary videos in 2014. In his videos, Brand discusses everything from online censorship to politics, with that iconic biting humour and verbose wit we’ve all come to love.

Russell Brand is facing rape and assault allegations that emerged over the weekend and are now putting a hold on his upcoming projects.

Brand’s sold-out comedy tour “Bipolarisation” was postponed at the U.K.’s Theatre Royal Windsor, plus in Plymouth and Wolverhampton over the next 10 days. Brand has additionally been dropped by his management company, and his book deal has been suspended.

Assault accusations against Brand in “Dispatches” range from encounters across 2006 through 2013, overlapping with his marriage to Katy Perry. The BBC and Banijay, both of which employed Brand at the time the accusations allegedly took place, have  launched an investigation  into the claims. Police officers are also investigating a report about an assault that allegedly took place in 2003, with a statement issued: “Officers are in contact with the woman and will be providing her with support.”

Brand’s “rule-breaking” comedy tour “Bipolarisation” was set to fund an addiction charity; Brand previously opened up about his own struggles with drug and sex addiction. The Theatre Royal Windsor issued a statement following the allegations against Brand, saying, “We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don’t like doing it — but we know you’ll understand.”

Brand’s publishing deal with Pan Macmillan imprint Bluebird was suspended. The company stated, “These are very serious allegations and in the light of them, Bluebird has taken the decision to pause all future publishing with Russell Brand.”

“Russell Brand categorically and vehemently denied the allegation made in 2020, but we now believe we were horribly misled by him,” Tavistock Wood said (via Deadline ). “TW has terminated all professional ties to Brand.”

Brand recently shared a YouTube video titled “So, This Is Happening” where he refuted all the new claims against him.

“These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream media, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies,” Brand said. “And as I’ve written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous. Now during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then — almost too transparent — and I’m being transparent about it now as well.”

Russell Brand’s Comedy Tour in U.K. Postponed in Wake of Rape and Assault Allegations

The comedian had been scheduled to perform three stand-up shows in the U.K. over the next two weeks

Russell Brand 's upcoming stand-up tour dates have been postponed following allegations that he raped, sexually assaulted and abused multiple women .

The comedian, 48, had been scheduled to perform three stand-up shows in the U.K. over the next two weeks as part of his Bipolarisation tour.

“We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don’t like doing it — but we know you’ll understand,” the tour's promoters said Monday in a statement shared by the Theatre Royal Windsor, where Brand was set to appear on Tuesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Though three upcoming dates have since been postponed, the Rock of Ages star did go ahead with his scheduled performance at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in London on Saturday night. Brand was photographed leaving the venue after the gig and getting into a car, with his eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses.

During his show, where he received a standing ovation, he thanked the audience of about 2,000 people for coming and said there were certain topics he could not discuss that night, BBC News reported.

"I really appreciate your support, I love you, and I want to do a fantastic show for you," he told the crowd, per the outlet. "I've got a lot of things to talk to you about. There are obviously some things that I absolutely cannot talk about, and I appreciate that you will understand."

Earlier on Saturday, Brand was revealed as the subject of a joint  investigation  by The Sunday Times ,  The Times  and U.K. current affairs show Channel 4  Dispatches in which five women — four who remained anonymous — including a 16-year-old accused him of rape, sexual assault and physical and emotional abuse.

The incidents allegedly took place between 2006 and 2013 when Brand was working as a film actor and a presenter for BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4.

Brand vehemently denied the allegations in a video posted on social media on Friday.

On Monday, Brand was hit with new allegations , as  The Times  reported that “several women” had contacted the newspaper since it published its investigation on the actor.

Scotland Yard has also been urged to look into the women's claims against Brand by U.K. government minister Caroline Nokes, who said Monday that the “incredibly shocking and criminal" allegations are "first and foremost a matter for the police," The Times reported. Nokes also pointed out that "celebrity can act as a shield" in cases like this.

On Monday, Scotland Yard told PEOPLE that London's Metropolitan Police is "aware of media reporting of a series of allegations of sexual assault."

"At this time, we have not received any reports in relation to this," Scotland Yard's statement added. "We spoke with  The Sunday Times  on Saturday, 16 September. We will be making further approaches to the  Sunday Times  and Channel 4 to ensure that any victims of crime who they have spoken with are aware of how they may report any criminal allegations to police."

Brand said in his video Friday that he “absolutely refutes” the claims made against him.

“I’ve received two extremely disturbing letters, or a letter and an email, one from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper, listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks,” he began. “But amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks, are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.”

He also addressed the timeframe of the women's allegations, saying that all of the relationships were "consensual."

“These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies. And as I’ve written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous. Now during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual.”

“I was always transparent about that then — almost too transparent. And I’m being transparent about it now as well. And to see that transparency metastasized into something criminal, that I absolutely deny,” he added.
