The 8 best safari day trips and weekends from Cape Town

Track down the elusive ‘Big Five’, and have a whale of a time doing it

Alicia Erickson

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.

South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s:  lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

The best safaris near Cape Town

Aquila Game Reserve

1.  Aquila Game Reserve

At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conseration-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

3.  Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

One of the closest safari experiences to Cape Town, Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve is set against the craggy foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains. Just over an hour from the city by car, Fairy Glen transports visitors to a magical, rustic setting, with options for both day and overnight safaris. Count yourself extra lucky if you spot a leopard, but elephants, lions and other creatures roam the plains in relative abundance. Stay overnight in the self-catering accommodation to maximise your chances of spotting various fantastic beasts at sunrise and sunset.

Goudkop Bush Camp

4.  Goudkop Bush Camp

This simple and underrated wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

Grootbos Nature Reserve

7.  Grootbos Nature Reserve

Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

Hermanus

8.  Hermanus

Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Whale watching is what brings the crowds here, as Hermanus is graced with migrating southern right whales from June through to December. Try and spot them from the wind-swept beaches or join a boat tour and spend a day experiencing the splendour of these mighty marine mammals. Hop in your car, make that 90-minute journey from Cape Town and stay for a day or two in this whale watching paradise.

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

safari experience cape town

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.

Embark on a Wild Adventure: Experience a Safari in Cape Town

Before you set off on your wild adventure, choose the right safari experience. Here's a comprehensive guide to choosing a Cape Town safari.

Dominique Jackson • Aug 28, 2023

safari experience cape town

Cape Town, with its stunning coastal landscapes and vibrant urban scene, is undoubtedly one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations. A stone’s throw away from this bustling city, you can immerse yourself in the wonders of the African wilderness. A Cape Town safari offers a unique opportunity to witness Africa’s incredible wildlife up close.

Here’s your comprehensive guide to making the most of an unforgettable safari experience.

Choosing the Right Safari

Before you set off on your wild adventure, it’s crucial to choose the right safari experience. Cape Town offers a range of options, catering to various budgets and preferences.

  • Private Game Reserves: For an exclusive and intimate experience, consider booking a safari at a private game reserve. Some renowned choices near Cape Town, include Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and Aquila Private Game Reserve. Prices vary, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $300 per person for a day trip, including meals and game drives.
  • National Parks: If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, head to a national park, like Addo Elephant National Park or Karoo National Park. Entrance fees are typically between $10 and $20 per person, making it an affordable way to see South Africa’s incredible wildlife.
  • Group Tours: Group tours offer a balance between cost and experience. Companies, like Cape Town Safari Tours and Inverdoorn Game Reserve, offer guided tours, including transportation, meals and game drives. Prices generally range from $100 to $200 per person for a full-day tour.

The Best Time to Visit

Cape Town’s climate is known for its diversity, and the best time for a safari depends on your preferences.

  • Summer (November to March): This period offers lush green landscapes, but it’s also the hottest and busiest time. Expect higher prices and more crowds. However, it’s an excellent time for birdwatching and seeing newborn animals.
  • Fall (April to May): The weather remains pleasant, and the vegetation starts to thin out, making it easier to spot wildlife. Prices are generally lower than in summer.
  • Winter (June to August): Winter brings cooler temperatures, but the wildlife viewing is at its best. Animals gather around waterholes, making them easier to spot. Prices are often lower, and there are fewer tourists.
  • Spring (September to October): This is the best time for flora enthusiasts as the wildflowers bloom. It’s also a good time for wildlife viewing as animals are more active during this period.

Booking Your Safari

Once you’ve determined the best time to visit and the type of safari experience you want, it’s time to book. Many reputable companies offer safari packages in Cape Town.

  • Aquila Private Game Reserve: This reserve is just a two-hour drive from Cape Town and is known for its Big Five game viewing. They offer day tours and overnight stays in luxurious lodges.
  • Sanbona Wildlife Reserve: Located in the Little Karoo, Sanbona, this safari offers a unique experience with a focus on conservation. They offer various accommodation options from glamping to high-end lodges.
  • Inverdoorn Game Reserve: This reserve is famous for its cheetah rescue and rehabilitation program. They offer day safaris and overnight stays in comfortable lodges.
  • Karoo National Park: If you prefer a self-drive safari, consider visiting Karoo National Park. You can book accommodations within the park and explore at your own pace.

What to Expect on Your Safari

Your safari experience in Cape Town will typically include the following:

  • Game Drives: Game drives are the heart of any safari experience. Knowledgeable guides will take you on thrilling excursions, where you can spot elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalo.
  • Bush Walks: Some reserves offer guided bush walks, providing a more intimate experience with the African wilderness. You’ll learn about animal tracks, plants and the smaller creatures often overlooked during game drives.
  • Birdwatching: Cape Town and its surrounding areas are a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 500 bird species. Don’t forget your binoculars and a bird guidebook.
  • Cultural Experiences: Some safaris also include visits to local communities, providing a deeper understanding of South African culture and history.
  • Night Drives: To catch a glimpse of the nocturnal creatures, consider a night drive. You might spot owls, hyenas and other elusive animals.

Safety Precautions

While safaris are thrilling adventures, they also require caution.

  • Respect Wildlife: Remember that you are a guest in their home. Keep a safe distance from animals and listen to your guide’s instructions.
  • Health Precautions: Consult your doctor before traveling, and ensure you have the necessary vaccinations. Malaria is not a concern in Cape Town, but it’s a risk in other parts of South Africa.
  • Sun Protection: Cape Town’s sun can be harsh. Wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially in the warmer months.
  • Follow Rules: National parks and private reserves have rules in place to protect both visitors and wildlife. Always follow them.

Mawande was an amazing guide and host, articulate and informed and I learnt so much about SA and its history thanks to him. He really went above and beyond trying to spot giraffes and so on for us on the road side and stopping when we asked. And patiently explaining SA politics and history. It was a small group of 8 and we gelled pretty well. I felt comfortable as a solo traveller and safe at all times. The itinerary was pretty non stop but I feel like it was worth it as I got a good insight into the different areas of the two cape regions we visited - I'd booked the single room option in hostels, we got upgraded to the guest house the first night which was gorgeous and the hostel the second night was fun and set in amongst amazing greenery. The Lodge on the final night was just beautiful. If anything I wish the trip had been longer - it really warrants a week so you can properly explore, but if you have limited time like I did then go for it! Read more Written 23 April 2024

  • 809alexandrap 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Shame about the pool A lovely place to visit. The chalets were well-equipped, clean and nice and cool with a lovely balcony. The restaurant is decent and serves good food and wine. The most frustrating this is how the pool area has been neglected. It is actually a nice pool but the surrounding grass areas are not tended, barren patches and uncut grass even round the pool edge. If the ground was levelled (currently on slopes) it would be an easy remedy. There is also little shade and about 3 sun loungers, not easy for several families that visited when we were there. What they really need is someone to properly manage the pool (not leave a hose on all day to irrigate which just runs down the slope and creates a swamp!) Some nice parasols and better sun loungers too would be nice. Read more Written 13 March 2024
  • Katrin H 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Nice Tour, with a great guide! Thx Mawande for making this Tour to a great experience! The more or less typical touristic tour has been unique because of Mawande. His knowledge and expertise in case of all topic’s concerning South Africa’s landscapes, Nature, History or everyday features was fantastic. During he drove us safely through the route, we had some really exciting conversations and learned an incredible amount of fascinating information. Some of the items on the program were not in my personal interest and they are designed for the maximum tourism (e.g. Ostrichfarm or Elephantpark). Nevertheless our guide made the journey through the beautiful landscape to a wonderful experience so I gained a better insight into this special country and places despite the short time. As we were a small group he adapted to our individual preferences throughout the day and gave lots of recommendations for what to do at each place. He knows the best spots! Our highlights were the Garden Route Game Drives, the Ostrich farm and the beautiful beach at Jeffreys Bay. For anyone who wants to experience a lot in a short amount of time, this is your trip! • 189yingk 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Everything is Excellent for this tour! The 4-day Garden Route Adventure tour with Benjamin as our operator is impressive and unforgettable. Benjamin is knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and patient. He does what he says, "It's your vacation and I am happy if you enjoy it." We enjoyed our time spent with him and the whole group. Benjamin managed well to meet the additional requests of this group. In addition to the scheduled programs, this group visited Knysna Elephant Park and Cango Wildlife Ranch. Some group members did the Bloudrans Bungy. We stopped many times for pictures taken, food and drink, and toilets. Benjamin's patience and hospitality impressed the whole group. We call him operator rather than tour guide because he has operated everything requested to happen. The whole tour started well with the booking experience and Nitsiko's communication. Food, accommodation, transportation, and scheduled programs are excellent. We highly recommend this tour if you choose a short trip for adventure and safari on the Garden Route. Best Time to Go on Safari in Cape Town

There is no best time of year to go on a South African safari, however, there are times of year to suit everyone’s preferences. Cape Town summer takes place between November and February. During this time it gets very hot during the day – this often means that the animals sleep during the sweltering days. During winter it tends to be cold but it’s easy enough to keep warm during the day.

When going on safari tours, we always recommend going in the early morning or in the evening. This is when you can expect to see most animal activity.

Enjoy some of the highlights of the Western Cape on this action-packed, customizable five-day tour from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.

Day 1 From a collection in Cape Town, day one puts you on route to the southernmost tip of Africa. A visit to the endangered African penguins in Betty’s Bay is followed by a scenic drive to Hermanus, where an array of shops, artworks, and restaurants will entertain you for the afternoon.

Whale watching is also on the cards between the months of July to November, as is the opportunity for an optional half day of shark cage diving. The day concludes at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans in the Cape Agulhas, to settle in for the evening at Struisbaai.

Day 2 Take in the sights of Route 62 on track to the Klein Karoo, where the day kicks off and ends in Oudtshoorn. The ‘Ostrich Capital of the World’ is a great place to purchase beautiful handcrafted ostrich leather goods and is in close proximity to the Cango Caves.

Enjoy an afternoon exploring the ancient cave system with an experienced guide, or simply kick back and indulge in a sampling of local wines from the region.

Day 3 After breakfast travel over the Outeniqua Mountain Pass on route to the Wilderness National Park. An action-packed day begins with canoeing up the Touw River, surrounded by lush indigenous forest and abundant birdlife.

From there a 2-kilometer boardwalk hike reveals a cascading waterfall and rockpool where you can kick off your shoes and enjoy a dip.

The next stop is lunch and shopping in the heart of the garden route, Knysna. Travel up to the Knysna Heads to take in the views to either side, the Knysna River estuary to one side and the Indian Ocean to the other.

Wind down for the day at the coastal town of Sedgefield, perhaps with a little sand between your toes at one of its beaches before settling in for the night.

Day 4 After breakfast, Tsitsikamma National Park awaits, with a stop at Bloukrans Bridge where you can tap into your adventurous side with a 216-meter high bungee jump along the way. Hike, swim or take a wander across the suspension bridge upon reaching Tsitsikamma for the afternoon.

6-Day Garden Route and Addo Safari (Return)

A little bit daring and a whole lot more relaxing, this popular return tour from Cape Town covers all the highlights of the garden route and beyond.

Day 1 Leave Cape Town in the rearview mirror and head towards Hermanus, the whale watching capital of South Africa. A stop at Betty’s Bay is a welcomed opportunity to meet the colony of endangered African penguins in their cozy seaside habitat.

Pass through Hermanus for a spot of lunch and shopping, perhaps even a lucky whale sighting between the months of July to November. Continue onward to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas, to witness the meeting point of the cold Atlantic and warm Indian oceans.

Day 2 Head to the ‘Ostrich Capital of the World’, Oudtshoorn, where an afternoon lies in wait for exploring the ancient cave system at Cango Caves, or simply spend some time sampling local wines.

Day 3 With breakfast out the way, a trip over Outeniqua Mountain Pass leads to an afternoon of canoeing between the lush indigenous vegetation along the Touw River at Wilderness National Park. Explore the surrounds a little more on a 2-kilometer boardwalk hike that opens up to a cascading waterfall, where you can enjoy a dip in the inviting rock pool below.

Next stop, Knysna. Lunch and leisurely shopping lead on to a trip up to the Knysna Heads, where a remarkable viewpoint parts the Indian Ocean and Knysna River estuary to either side. Relish in the sun, sand and ‘vitamin sea’ while relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches nearby in Sedgefield for the remainder of the day.

Day 4 No garden route trip is complete without visiting the Tsitsikamma National Park for a hike, swim or walk across the suspension bridge. A quick stop on route at the world’s highest bungee jump bridge, Bloukrans, is an opportunity to tick off an item on your bucket list. But this one may just be for the daring few.

Day 5 With 2-3 hours at Addo Elephant National Park, there is plenty to do on this 28,000-hectare reserve, including the option of a game drive. Head back to the heart of the garden route to settle in for the evening in either Wilderness or Mossel Bay.

Day 6 After breakfast, stretch out on one of the beaches at Mossel Bay and soak up the sun or get your heart rate up on a hike along St. Blaize trail, contouring along the cliffs from the St. Blaize Lighthouse. If you aren’t quite ready for the tour to end, you could indulge in an optional tandem skydive or sandboarding adventure before returning to Cape Town.

  • Breakfast and dinner daily (excluding day 6)
  • Wilderness viewing safari in Addo Elephant National Park
  • Tandem skydiving

Cape Town Holidays

Cape Town Holidays

Location: Western Cape, South Africa Climate: Sub tropical Mediterranean climate with mild wet winters (Jun – Aug) and hot dry Summers (Nov – Mar) – best time to visit: Mar – Jun or Sept – Nov. Typical Landscape: Beautiful Dutch architecture, Table Mountain, long rugged coastlines

Cape Town is the jewel of South Africa and with numerous luxury hotels, fantastic shopping, world class theatres and restaurants, and beautiful coastline this is one of the world’s ultimate city destinations. Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa and the largest in land-area, forming part of the city of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. Cape Town is famous for its stunning harbour as well as the Cape floral kingdom, Table Mountain and Cape Point.

Cape Town is located on the shore of Table Bay was originally developed by the Dutch East India Company and is the spot famous for being the first European settlement in South Africa. Today Cape Town is one of the most multicultural cities in the world.

There are a number of calm and leafy Cape Town suburbs which hold some of Cape Town’s famous hotels, as well as the Victoria and Albert Waterfront which is also a wonderful place to stay:

The City Bowl – a naturally shaped amphitheatre bordered by Table Bay and defined by Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, Table and Devil’s Peak Mountains. The area includes Cape Town’s business district, the harbour and the Company’s Garden.

The Northern Suburbs – these are mostly Afrikaans speaking and include Kensington, Panorama, Burgundy Estate and many more small areas.

The Eastern Suburbs – include Fairdale, Blue downs and Kuils River amongst other areas.

Atlantic Seaboard – this includes Camps Bay, Clifton, Hout Bay and Three Anchor Bay.

Southern Suburbs – this includes Pinelands, Wynberg, Constantia and Bishopscourt.

South Peninsula – the South Peninsula is regarded as the area of Muizenberg on the Indian Ocean and Noordhoek on the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Cape Point.

Cape Flats – The Cape Flats is an expansive low lying flat area situated to the South East of the business district of Cape Town. From the 1950s this area became known as the apartheid government area of non-whites – race based legislation forced white people out of certain central urban areas.

West Coast – the West Coast suburbs include Tableview, West Beach, Sunset Beach and many more coastal suburbs.

Cape Town remains to this day one of the most enchanting, friendly and varied cities in the world, and is well worth a visit if you are in South Africa.

Things To Do in Cape Town

V&A (Victoria and Albert) Waterfront This unique working harbour is breathtaking by day or night with designer clothes shops, award winning restaurants, boat trips and much more.

Mountain Climbing Table Mountain and the surrounding mountain ranges are perfect environments for abseiling, rock climbing and kloofing. There are also gentler mountain bike and hiking trails with extraordinary views.

Glen, Clifton and Camps Bay Beach Glen Beach is small, secluded and beautiful – adjacent to Camps Bay and Clifton Beach it is a popular hang out for glamorous locals. Take a champagne yacht cruise. Go Flying Sky dive, hang-glide or paraglide across these huge panoramas.

Diving The Cape Peninsula offers some top scuba spots, the water is very cold but it’s well worth the experience. Great White Shark Cage Diving is also a very popular past time. The Two Oceans Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront is magical for those who do not fancy experiencing the temperature of the Atlantic ocean.

The Promenade The Promenade’s cafes, restaurants and cocktail venues are the envy of every other city in the world.

The Tides Restaurant The Bay Hotel’s Tides Restaurant offers relaxed dining in a magical location.

Theatre on the Bay This offers a fantastic array of musicals, comedy, dance, music and drama.

Baraza Groove Bar Inspired by Zanzibar this eclectic cocktail bar offers views of the stunning palm fringed beach.

Table Mountain and the Cable Car Take a trip up one of the natural wonders of the world and experience Cape Town with a bird’s eye view.

Kirstenbosch Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a world famous garden, set on 528 hectares and supports a diverse fynbos flora and natural forest. Concerts are held in the gardens in summer with local and international artists entertaining audiences in the late afternoon.

Read more Written April 23, 2024

Read more Written March 13, 2024
Our guide Mawande made this trip unforgettable. He knows so much about the country, it's history and the people. Cape Town's Project 1 000 trains new metro police officers to combat crime

Cape Town is currently providing training to 1 000 aspiring metro police officers through a comprehensive 18-month full-time learnership. This programme encompasses rigorous physical training alongside instruction on legislation, theory, and hands-on experience.

Dubbed as Project 1,000, this initiative aims to expand upon the successes of the Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (Leap), which has already stationed 1 300 fresh officers in key crime areas within the city, according to Times Live .

‘I was impressed to see Leap and metro police candidates taking on their intense physical fitness training this morning [Monday],’ Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said.

‘More than 28 000 arrests have been made by our Leap officers since the province and city teamed up in 2019 to invest in more policing resources.’

This year, the City of Cape Town has earmarked R35 million for the project.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasised the City’s commitment to continually expanding its policing resources to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the fight against crime. He highlighted the positive outcomes of their investments, particularly in aiding SAPS’ efforts against gang, gun, and drug-related crimes.

‘City policing operations confiscated 447 illegal firearms in the past two financial years. Firearm-related arrests went up 35% in 2022/23, with law enforcement also doubling annual drug arrests from 4 000 to 8 000 in the same period,’ Hill-Lewis said.

After an exhaustive recruitment process, the programme commenced in December 2023.

‘I wish all our candidates well and look forward to seeing the impact they will make in our communities,’ JP Smith said.

South Africa: Activists clean up Cape Town beach in celebration of Earth Day

safari experience cape town

South Africa

A group of environmental activists gathered at the Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town on Monday to do a beach cleanup in celebration of Earth Day.

Earth Day is a globally celebrated annual event which mobilises people to reduce plastic consumption and pollution around the world.

The activists started at the Muizenberg beachfront and cleaned along the shore and then moved to cleaning between the rocks.

Lyniel Traut, an organiser and volunteer said she would like to see South Africa reduce the production of plastics by 2040 by 60%.

"Well, they need to reduce the production of plastics, that’s number one, that’s where it starts. A lot of corporates need to get involved and also do their part and also educate people about the use of single-use plastics and what other options there are as well." says Traut.

Fellow activist, Vigilante Manangazira, said Earth Day was important because she wanted her children and grandchildren to grow up in a safe environment, "where it’s plastic free and pollution free."

The activists have pledged to keep appealing to their government and to regularly arrange beach cleanups.
