Samantha Brown's Cruise Packing Hack Will Save You From a Potential Travel Nightmare

samantha brown cruise

Emmy award-winning travel TV host Samantha Brown christened the AmaMagna in Grein, Austria amid music, dance, and festivities that included local residents in traditional dirndls and lederhosen, fireworks, entertainment, and of course, champagne. The new AmaWaterways ship, twice as wide as traditional river vessels, was designed specifically for cruising the Danube.

Brown ‘s Places to Love is in its third year of filming, and she told guests at the christening event that it’s the people who really make us feel we are part of a place. “It is my belief that we travel in order to feel like we belong to this world and that the new luxury of travel is simply meeting and connecting with people,” she said.

The AmaMagna cruises between Budapest, Hungary and Vilshofen, Germany with stops in Bratislava, Vienna, Grein, Linz, and Passau, with a variety of shore excursions in each place. On board, guests enjoy dining options that include the Main Restaurant, Chef’s Table, Jimmy’s Wine Bar & Restaurant, and Al Fresco, with retractable windows and outdoor seating.

The additional space on the larger ship added more luxury, not more passengers, according to AmaWaterways co-founder, co-owner, and president Rudi Schreiner, who conceived the unique ship. Open areas, dining options, and staterooms were enhanced, and space for a spa, fitness center, and leisure areas were important considerations.

In concluding her comments before the traditional breaking of the champagne bottle against the AmaMagna , Brown reminded guests that when we travel, we are part of a greater community — a global community that can truly make the world a better place.

Travel + Leisure caught up with Brown as she headed off to New Zealand to film an episode of her show. She shared some thoughts about her experience on the AmaMagna christening cruise.

T+L: What did it mean to you to be the godmother of a cruise ship?

Brown: "It’s quite honestly the biggest honor I’ve been given in the travel industry. And I took it very seriously — I watched all the videos of her being built, saw all the computer renderings, and now I even follow her on Instagram."

What was the most memorable part of your AmaWaterways cruise?

"I loved meeting and learning from the locals of towns, villages, and cities and then when back on board, sharing those experiences with the crew and fellow passengers. It was this powerful human exchange that reinforced the idea we are not just consumers of travel, but we are in fact a part of a greater community."

Why do you think river cruising has become so popular?

"The intimacy and personal nature of it. Being on a river, you are physically connected to the natural beauty of a region, and you are sharing this experience with a small group of people that you get to know. People are traveling today in order to connect with people and places in a way that our own daily lives may not allow."

What’s one thing you wish you knew before taking your first river cruise?

"Just how overwhelming it can be to be on a, say, seven-day cruise, with every day being another incredibly anticipated destination. You have to pace yourself and you should plan this in advance of your trip. You just can’t physically do tour excursions every single day. So mark off which cities you want to explore on a walking tour, to go totally on your own, or which ones you’ll pass on, giving yourself a day off to stay on the ship."

What is the one thing not to do on a cruise?

"Don't pack everything in one checked suitcase! If your bag doesn’t make it, it’s really hard for your luggage to get to you since you are moving to a new port every day. That’s a game of tag that no one wants to play. Either bring a separate carry-on with a few days’ worth of clothes, or if you’re traveling with someone, split your things between the two suitcases so if one doesn’t make it, you still have the other (hopefully)."

What is the one thing you should always pack for a cruise?

"Really good walking shoes that have been broken in."

What’s the next destination on your cruise bucket list?

"I would love to do the lower Danube and go deeper into Eastern Europe places like Serbia and Bulgaria."

People posing for group photo on cruise ship deck with ocean and green landscape in the background.

We recently caught up with Samantha Brown , celebrated travel expert, after her family vacation in Norway with Holland America Line . Here’s what she had to say about their great adventure while sharing family travel tips along the way!

My family and I had the absolute time of our lives cruising Norway with Holland America Line. Not only did I have my husband and kids with me, but much of my extended family came too – including my sisters. We haven’t been on a vacation together since 1982! All in all, it was three generations on one ship!

Knowing I had so many loved ones joining me on this once-in-a-lifetime cruise also made me want to make sure everyone felt both taken care of and had the most incredible trip. Here are some ways I made sure that happened:

Plan at least one special moment for the whole family to share.

The best part of cruising with Holland America Line is the sheer amount of excursions they offer to passengers. While everyone can easily split up, I highly recommend making sure everyone gets together for at least one excursion. Create a bucket-list moment that everyone can talk about years from now, and that any kid will claim as a core memory.

For us it was kayaking Naeroyfjord. Norway is known for its fjords, which are narrow inlets surrounded by cliffs, and Naeroyfjord is one of the most famous. Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it’s one of the visual inspirations for Arendelle in Frozen. The views really speak for themselves. As I kayaked with my family, I was just absolutely awestruck by the soaring cliffs and countless waterfalls. Truly, I lost count trying to keep track of them all!

The real highlight though was hearing my daughter say, “This was the best day of my life!” I’ll never forget that moment!

Book must-do excursions ASAP.

Talking about the bucket-list moments leads me to my next point: make sure you book any shore excursion you really want to do as soon as possible. More popular ones – like kayaking Naeroyfjord – understandably sell out fast, so if you wait too long, you may miss out. Don’t despair if you can’t get the ones you want though. Organized excursions are great, but Norway is one of the places where you can just hop off at any dock and see where your feet take you. It’s truly one of the most naturally beautiful countries I’ve been to, and as you know, I’ve been to a lot!

During our cruise, we’d often disembark and explore based on how we were feeling. Some days all we had to worry about was picking which place to have an epic Norwegian lunch. Relax in Oslo with some boba tea? Check. Hike in Kristiansand to see what Norwegian forests are like compared to our own? Check. Wander around an open-air museum with homes from the 1500s in Liervik? Check. Try the coffee and pancakes in said museum? Double check!

Don’t be afraid to mix and match.

The beauty of large family trips is that you can mix and match the adults and the kids. Through many trips, I’ve found that grandparents have very similar body clocks as my kids – meaning they usually want naps and snacks around the same time every day. I say embrace the similarities and take the opportunity to switch up family dynamics.

Take advantage of the onboard activities.

There is absolutely no such thing as boredom aboard any Holland America Line cruise, and if your kid starts telling you they’re bored, they have definitely not explored enough. We were on Holland America’s newest ship, Rotterdam , and it had everything aboard. For families, the Kids Club is included in the price of the cruise with supervised play and activities. And of course, we also had lots of pool time with their new friends.

Here are a few other onboard activities we enjoyed:

  • Rolling Stone Lounge: a great live venue space
  • Billboard Onboard: dual piano bar for the win!
  • B.B. King’s Blues Club: perfect for anyone who wants to shimmy the night away
  • Spa and Salon: for when you want some rest and relaxation.

My best tip though? Just start walking around without a map. I find all the best quiet spots on a ship that way.

Bring layers!

Even if you cruise Norway in the middle of summer, it’s still a lot cooler out than you’d expect. If you only pack shorts and T-shirts, you’re going to get cold very quickly. And if you try to buy while you’re here, you’re going to have quite the sticker shock once you figure out the price in USD from the Norwegian kroner. Bring sweaters, longer pants, and sturdy socks so you’re all set no matter what you do.

Also bring sleep masks.

If you cruise Norway in the summer, be prepared for very late sunsets and very early sunrises. The sun often rises as early as 4:00 AM and will set as late as 10 or 11:00 PM. For anyone who cruises farther north, expect 24/7 daylight with midnight sun. While Holland America Line rooms have blackout curtains, you may wind up staying in a hotel that doesn’t. Pack sleep masks to make sure you get enough sleep!

Norway is a mostly cashless country.

Make sure at least one of your credit cards is set up to tap and pay. Norway is pretty much cashless, and many places won’t even accept physical money. You’ll especially need this at many public bathrooms, which cost 11-22 kroner or 1-2 euros for entrance.

All in all, have fun! Holland America Line provides plenty of structure with their itineraries while still giving guests plenty of time to see Norway on their own. Be present with your loved ones. This was a bucket-list trip for my family, and I just know we’re going to be reminiscing about it for years to come.

Join TV Host Samantha Brown Onboard The AmaDolce

AmaWaterways invites you to join tv host Samantha Brown, Godmother of the AmaMagna, as she discovers the Taste of Bordeaux, July 29, 2021

What Samantha Brown , Emmy® Award winning tv host, celebrated travel expert and AmaMagna Godmother, enjoys most about travel is not necessarily the “must do’s” of a destination—visiting the iconic museums, majestic castles and celebratory monuments. What she loves the most is meeting people, getting to know them and spending time with them as they go about their everyday lives.

Samantha’s PBS show, ‘Places to Love,' encourages viewers to experience the local, authentic side of travel that brings the passion of the people and the soul of a place to life in a way that only traveling can do. Whether it’s through food and drink, art and design, culture or adventure, at the end of each episode, viewers have a well-curated list of new enriching experiences that focus on not just how to visit a destination, but how to fully immerse in it.

“My series, ‘Places to Love,’ is about exploring the more personal side of travel by finding the destinations, experiences and, most importantly, the people who make us feel like we are really a part of a place; where we’re not just treated like a consumer but a part of the community,” said Samantha Brown. “From famous cities to under-the-radar gems, “Places to Love” is ultimately about approaching travel in bold and refreshing ways.”

During the July 29th cruise, Samantha will be hosting dinners in The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant – included in your cruise fare, wine tasting during the many included excursions and sharing her insider tips and stories with you during two engaging presentations on how you can really appreciate the essence of travel.

You can join her for a special 7-night hosted river journey sailing the Taste of Bordeaux on board AmaDolce departing July 29, 2021.

“People are traveling today in order to connect with people and places in a way that our own daily lives may not allow. Being on a river, you are physically connected to the natural beauty of a region, and you are sharing this experience with a small group of people that you get to know. "

Samantha Brown's Top Tips For Planning Your Dream Cruise Vacation

T ravel guru Samantha Brown may have made a name for herself by jet-setting from one country to another and sharing her experiences in her travel shows, but if she had it her way, she'd ditch those airport lounges and cruise the world instead. "If [I] could cruise anywhere, I would cruise," she once told Sherman's Travel . While Brown loves the thrill of exploring new places with a detailed itinerary in tow, she relishes getting to unwind on cruises, whether it's aboard a massive ship of a major cruise line or an intimate river cruise. As someone who always has to put together meticulous schedules all the time, cruising lets her take a breather, allowing her to savor the journey more.

With an impressive number of voyages to her credit, Brown has become quite a renowned figure in the cruise space, even partnering with big-name brands like Carnival, Holland America, and AmaWaterways. Her extensive cruising experience effectively makes her an authority when it comes to crafting the ultimate cruise adventure. Just as you trust her advice on protecting yourself from pesky pickpockets , you can also rely on her help to plan the best cruise of your life.

From packing a carry-on to ordering items off the cruise dining menu, Brown offers invaluable advice for nearly every aspect of your cruise experience. Here are some of her tried-and-tested tips for planning and enjoying cruises.

Book Your Excursions As Soon As You Can

One of the best things about cruises is you're not chained to any activity. When your ship docks, you don't necessarily have to explore the port city and join a local tour. You always have the option to stay on the ship to lounge in your favorite onboard spots, participate in activities the cruise line has prepared, or indulge in some spa time. But according to Samantha Brown, if you're planning on hopping off the ship and trying out an excursion, you need to book it ASAP, lest you risk losing out on a spot."Make sure you book any shore excursion you really want to do as soon as possible. More popular ones ( ... ) understandably sell out fast, so if you wait too long, you may miss out," she shared with Holland America , noting that in the event that you do miss the chance to book the excursion you're eyeing, it's not the end of the world. Her family's adventure when they cruised through Norway is a case in point, with Brown sharing that it presented the perfect opportunity to embrace spontaneity. "Organized excursions are great, but Norway is one of the places where you can just hop off at any dock and see where your feet take you," she explained. "It's truly one of the most naturally beautiful countries I've been to, and as you know, I've been to a lot!"

Make Room For Additional Expenses In Your Budget

Speaking of excursions, it's important to remember that they're often not free. In fact, Samantha Brown wants cruise joiners to keep in mind that cruises are not like all-inclusive resorts. Lodging, buffet food, basic beverages, gym access, and some shows and activities may be already part of your package, but for everything else, you'll need to be prepared to shell out more money.

"The price of a cruise includes room and board but it doesn't include shore excursions, spa treatments, specialty dining, kids clubs or alcohol," Brown noted on her website . "Make sure you create a budget for these richly deserved extras BEFORE you go on the cruise. If you don't, the extras could easily add up to twice what you paid for the trip."

While you're at it, you may also want to take into account tips, too. While some cruise packages already include gratuities, it pays to carry some cash to tip cruise staff and show your gratitude for what they do. "Crew members are some of the hardest workers I have ever seen. They still manage to make you feel like you're not one of 3,000 cruisers," Brown also noted on her website, advising to bring several hundred dollars exclusively for tipping whenever you embark on a cruise. "They deserve your appreciation, especially if they've gone out of their way to help. You also need to tip the luggage handlers at the dock who are not a part of the cruise line."

Enhance Your Cruise Dining Experience With A Simple Hack

Cruising allows you to voyage across the seas, but you may overlook the fact that it can be a journey for your taste buds, too. Many cruises offer a lavish spread of dishes and desserts in their main dining rooms and buffets, and there are also some that have specialty restaurants on board that provide a diverse range of cuisines. Per Samantha Brown, if you're going to dine at these restaurants, there's a hack to make your dining experience more worthwhile: diverging from the menu.It may not even matter what specialty a restaurant offers. Brown suggests that if it's at all possible to order something other than the usual choices, consider asking the server about the hometown of the culinary team and then requesting a dish native to that place. "It will be the most delicious thing on the menu," she shared with Money .Brown reiterated this in an interview with Cruise Critic , telling the outlet that engaging with the locals is another part of what makes cruising more exciting. "There are locals on a cruise ship — the staff, the crewmembers — from all over the world. And it's really wonderful speaking to them about their home," she advised.

Always Bring A Carry-On Bag

It's no secret that Samantha Brown is also revered as somewhat of a packing queen with her impressive ability to fit all of her essentials into a single carry-on . If you're going on a cruise, the travel extraordinaire emphasizes the importance of toting around a carry-on, even when you've already checked in a suitcase. The reason? It saves you from aimlessly waiting for your checked luggage to be delivered to your room, allowing you to dive straight into cruising fun.

"It's really important to carry on a bag so you can start your vacation right away. You're typically bringing a lot of luggage on board, and you're probably dropping that luggage off [before you board] with 3,000 other people," she told Sherman's Travel . "When you do that, you don't see that luggage until maybe 6 p.m. that night."

What's more, if you don't pack some of your essentials into a carry-on, you'll be left with nothing in case your luggage fails to board the ship with you. "If your bag doesn't make it, it's really hard for your luggage to get to you since you are moving to a new port every day," she shared with Travel and Leisure . "Either bring a separate carry-on with a few days' worth of clothes, or if you're traveling with someone, split your things between the two suitcases so if one doesn't make it, you still have the other (hopefully)."

Don't Hesitate To Work With A Cruise Consultant Or Travel Agent

While booking a cruise doesn't require much planning on your end as opposed to the meticulous planning involved in air and land travel, Samantha Brown suggests enlisting the help of a cruise consultant or travel agent to help pick the right cruise. After all, no cruise is the same, and if you're traveling with family, you also have to take into account their personal preferences, too. With a travel agent, you have someone to help you parse through the myriad of options, ensuring your cruise selection will cater to what everyone wants. "A personal cruise consultant should be able to help you navigate what's available based on the ages of those in your group, the destination, and any safety concerns you may have," she told Holland America .

The kicker? Their services are not free, so you also have to make room for them in your budget. "A travel agent's fee varies from a percentage of the trip or a flat fee," Brown told Veranda . Get ready to allocate roughly five to 15% of the overall cost of your trip, or between $100 to $500. While this expense might initially appear unnecessary, the value becomes clear when unforeseen issues arise mid-trip. The tradeoff is you'll have someone to be with you every step of the way. "Whatever it is, when something goes wrong (and lately something always seems to be going wrong), the agent will pick up the phone and go to bat for you," Brown noted. "Very well worth it!"

Suri Cruise Nails 2024's Coastal Cowgirl Trend In New Photo

Suri Cruise walking

Suri Cruise and her eclectic fashion sense shine with her recent coastal cowgirl ensemble. Since her birth in 2006, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's daughter has been an enigma to the public. Unlike other A-list children, Suri has been kept away from the spotlight for most of her life, aside from the occasional paparazzi pic here and there. In a 2023 interview with Glamour , Holmes gave insight into why her daughter isn't in the spotlight. "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her," she explained.

While Suri has been shielded from the cutthroat world of Hollywood, the young New Yorker has still managed to make headlines for her stunning transformation, specifically in regard to her fashion choices. On April 24, less than week after her 18th birthday accessories melted our hearts in a touching photo , the young New Yorker was photographed sporting an oversized beige sweater cinched with a brown leather belt. Suri paired the top with a flowy white skirt and rustic cowboy boots to finish her look, channeling the "coastal cowgirl" trend to a tee.

Suri Cruise's fashion sense pops with fun bohemian cowgirl look

In 2009, Katie Holmes told Access Hollywood (via Vanity Fair ) that her daughter has a strong sense of style , telling the news outlet: "She wears what she wants. ... She has an idea of what she wants to wear every day." Suri Cruise's confident and unique fashion sense has continued to thrive well into her teenage years, with her recent take on the coastal cowgirl trend turning heads.

Over the last few years, pop culture enthusiasts have become obsessed with merging the free-spirited bohemian stylings into the rustic world of Western fashion. Dubbed the "coastal cowgirl" look , the popular fashion trend has resulted in people sporting airy blouses or dresses with rustic statement pieces like cowboy hats and cowboy boots. The style has also made its way to Hollywood, with many celebrities giving their own spin on the fashion fad.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's daughter isn't the only celebrity to explore the famous trend. From Miley Cyrus and her "Younger Now" era to Sydney Sweeny's monochromatic cowgirl look, various public figures have thrived in the bohemian/western chic look. In a 2023 interview with  Today , New York stylist Samantha Brown explained why the "coastal cowgirl" trend has gained so much momentum. "I feel like there's something about those hints of Western flair that make things feel a little bit more personal to the person wearing it," she said.

Here's how Moses Brown girls lacrosse tightened grip on Division I with rout of Barrington

samantha brown cruise

PROVIDENCE — Let’s just go ahead and stop this Division I girls lacrosse season right now.

Moses Brown is almost certainly going to make it two straight championships, right? The Quakers have been rampant through the first half of their schedule and show no signs of slowing down.

To suggest and assume as much, of course, is nonsense. And it explains a lot about how Moses Brown has set such a consistently high standard when two of its best players swat such hypothetical foolishness aside.

More: With spring break over, here's how Eric Rueb ranks RI's top girls lacrosse teams

The Quakers aren’t planning on losing focus, and Thursday’s effort against a fellow traditional power illustrated as much. They were in command from start to finish while grounding Barrington, 22-7.

“We’ve been playing really well together,” Moses Brown senior Hannah West said. “But we should not discredit any of the other teams in the league, because they’ve been coming out really strong.”

How serious has Moses Brown been to this point through seven matches? Try a combined 127-28 scoring margin – each of its victories has come by at least nine goals. This outing against the Eagles marked the third time in the last five the Quakers have scored at least 20.

“I think we respect all of our opponents,” Moses Brown junior Lilly Madeira said. “We respect each other. I think that’s why we succeed so much – we really are a ‘we.’”

Moses Brown spread this one out early at breezy Campanella Field. The Quakers took a 7-1 lead late in the first quarter and stretched it to 14-5 by halftime. The clock was running by midway through the third quarter, and four different players closed with at least a hat trick.

“It’s all about building that team chemistry that we’ve been working on all year,” West said. “We’re really good friends on and off the field, and I think that’s why we work so well on the field.”

West’s goal with 2:44 left in the first half started a run into the break. Maddie Chase cashed in a shooting space chance inside the final minute and Madeira provided a highlight with 19 seconds left. Samantha Mocco hit her with a pass in front and Madeira shot blindly over her head with her back to goal, hitting the top corner to make it a nine-goal advantage.

“I was lucky that my teammate found me,” Madeira said. “It was time, place – no planning it. It just kind of happened.”

Barrington (2-4) was blanked in the second half until Stella Hillier ripped home shot from close range. The Eagles won nine of the first 10 state championships after the Interscholastic League began sponsoring the sport in 2001. Moses Brown (7-0) has captured seven of the last eight and expanded its schedule throughout the region, taking care of Massachusetts foes Lincoln-Sudbury and Franklin through the opening month.

“This is a new team,” West said. “We have a lot of younger kids who just came in, and they’re doing great for us.

“Every year we try to find our groove as a new team. If we just keep working at it – working hard at practice and supporting each other – hopefully something can happen.”

BARRINGTON (7): Alex Hope 2, Emily Horn, Anna Lombardi 2, Stella Hillier, Ashley DaCosta; assists – Hope, Lombardi 2.

MOSES BROWN (22): Vivian Stone 2, Grace MacLean 5, Lilly Madeira 6, Maddie Chase 3, Hannah West 3, Izzy Cummings, Samantha Mocco, Skylar Maxwell; assists – Cummings 3, Chase, Stone 2, Madeira, West 3, Jane Belsito, Mocco 2.

Halftime – MB, 14-5. Saves – Katie McAdams, B, 10; Ava Porter, MB, 6.

Why you should consider a European Riverboat Cruise

  • February 15, 2019

I’ve traveled the world professionally for nearly two decades. The question I get over and over again: “Can I travel with you?” I’m excited to tell you that this summer, you can!

On July 14, 2019, join me in Vilshofen, Germany as we embark on a  8 days/7 night adventure aboard the fabulous AmaMagna . On this voyage, we’ll explore the Danube, venturing into the heart of the continent where empires were built, kings and queens were crowned and world-famous music was composed. Oh, and let’s not forget the gelato and wine!

Last summer, my husband and I brought our five-year-old twins on AmaWaterways’ Rhine River cruise .

It ended up being one of the best travel experiences of our lives. Hopefully that’s enticing enough to keep you cruising skeptics reading.

A whirlwind tour of Europe, while fun, is hardly ever easy (especially with kids). For every Instagrammed photo of a family jumping gleefully in the foreground of a gothic church, there is a real-life hunger-and-jet-lagged fueled tantrum to go with it… and often it’s the adults, not the kids, throwing it. A whirlwind European vacation with two almost-kindergarteners could’ve spelled disaster. With the framework our ship provided, the trip was magical. The four of us explored Heidelberg castle; learned about Gutenberg’s printing press in Mainz, Germany; and pretended we were the stars of our own fairytale on the cobblestone streets of Strasbourg, France. The best part? Not once did I hear, “are we there yet?”

rhine river cruise

River cruising makes what could be a stressful travel experience a breeze.

So often, we try to pack too much in the vacation of our dreams. I get it—a European trip is a vacation of a lifetime, and you want to squeeze every last drop out of it. However, it’s hard to be fully present when you’re tackling all the logistics yourself. Why not let a seasoned pro plan all the hard stuff, like transportation, tickets and reservations? When you don’t have to focus on the nitty-gritty details (and try to use Google translator to figure out what in the heck every sign says!), it’s easier to soak up the beauty and history.

You can travel Europe by train, plane and teeny, tiny automobile. When you go by river boat, no moment is wasted. Getting from A to B is a feast for the eyes, without fighting traffic or sharing a sleeper car with a snoring stranger. Instead of a car bingo board featuring semi trucks and gas stations, the river cruise version could boast fairytale castles, 11 th Century cathedrals, sprawling vineyards and more. BINGO! Now doesn’t that sound more fun?

But wait… there’s more! Since you’re cruising, you only unpack once, sleep in the same bed every night, and have access to incredible tours, excursions and cultural experiences. Unlike giant oceanliners, riverboats provide an intimate travel experience. Even the largest European river ship, the AmaMagna, accommodates just 194 passengers. This ship will be our hub this summer as we cruise the Danube, and I can’t wait to enjoy my morning tea on its step-out balcony. Add in spacious staterooms (who’s ever used the word “spacious” to describe European accommodations? I’m talking double vanities , people!), dining venues with gourmet cuisine; spa services; and a sun deck with heated pool, and you may not want to travel any other way.

The July 2019 trip will hit some of the most stunning cities in Europe.

We’ll cruise to Passau, known as the “City of Three Rivers,” and stretch our legs as we explore the city or climb to the Veste Oberhaus, Passau’s Castle Hill. Next, it’s on to Linz, Austria, where you may opt for a full-day excursion to Salzburg, or explore Linz’s old city center and the Mozart House. Our adventure continues in Dürnstein, Austia, famous for its cobblestone streets, famed church tower and locally grown, world-renowned Riesling and Grüner Veltliner.

The boat (or maybe it’s the wine) will gently rock you to sleep, and you’ll wake up refreshed in Vienna, the City of Waltzes. Explore the majestic Opera House, or burn off some of the ship’s gourmet meals on a guided bike ride along the blue Danube.

Our penultimate day brings us to Bratislava, Slovakia, host to the crowning ceremonies of 11 Hungarian kings and queens. The trip concludes in Budapest, complete with a visit to the vibrant Great Market Hall and an evening cruise around the famed Parliament Building.

As an added bonus, you’ll be traveling with the ship’s Godmother. Yes, that’s right: AmaWaterways appointed me as the Godmother of their newest and largest river boat. An honor, to say the least! While onboard, I’ll host two travel talks, and partake in the excursions. With only a 194 passenger capacity, I’m looking forward to meeting all of my fellow travelers, and exploring the beautiful Danube alongside them. Riverboat Godmothers… they’re just like us!

I’ve traveled the world professionally for 20 years. While Ive checked many adventures off my bucket list, one alluded me: a European riverboat cruise.

This Post Has 11 Comments

Do children now have reduced prices? I took my 10 year old grandson on a river cruise with AMA last August and had to,pay full adult price.

I thought the date of departure was July7 for the christening cruise?

Hi Samantha,

We love your shows, having watched them for years.

I just read via AAA.com your article about why to choose a river cruise and your upcoming AmaMagna cruise through Europe this summer in July. Sounds like great fun. We have wanted to do some traveling but have been somewhat reluctant to venture very far because of mobility issues that require me to use a scooter or power chair. Do you see persons using scooters or power chairs on river cruise ships?

The AmaMagna may not be the best choice for me, but would you be aware of travel resource websites geared for persons with mobility problems? Any suggestions that you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile, I’ll keep watching your show and remain envious of your job!

Phillip McDowell Jacksonville, FL

I will like to get the brochure or tours.

Can’t make it this year, but we’d love to travel with you someday!

I got ama’s brochure but they didn’t state if they had single traveler fares. Do you know?

I would definitely love some brochures to look over. This is definitely something I would love to do.

You can sign up for brochures here: https://www.amawaterways.com/river-cruise-brochures

Sam, I’ve been looking into the Rhine river cruise. I prefer to go to Europe without the boat, but you’ve sold me!

I remember fondly your son’s request to hunt for mushrooms in the forest when we were in the Czech Republic. The AmaMagna christening cruise was a delight!!

In Europe, if you had to name your 5 favorite restaurants (that didn’t cost you a week’s salary) and 5 super cool unknown/hidden sights to see (which far exceeded your expectations), where are they (cities) and what are the names of the restaurants? BTW … do you remember what you ordered?
