Ministry Clarifies Umrah Visa Validity and Departure Deadline Before Hajj

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in Saudi Arabia has provided new information regarding the validity of Umrah visas for visitors. According to the latest update, the visa is valid for a period of three months from the date of entry into Saudi Arabia, expiring no later than the 29th of Dhul-Qi’dah, which corresponds to June 7. The duration may vary according to the Umrah program.

This update clarifies the previous announcement, which stated that the visa was valid for three months from the date of issuance, expiring no later than Dhul-Qi’dah 15 of each Hijri year.

The ministry’s clarification came in response to an inquiry on the X platform regarding the validity of the Umrah visa. One of the user asked, “I was issued a visa on January 12 and entered the Kingdom on February 12. When do you start calculating entry from the date of issuance or from entering the Kingdom?”

In response, the ministry stated that “the duration of the visa is three months from the date of entry into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, expiring no later than the 29th of Dhul-Qi’dah, and it may vary according to the Umrah program.”

The ministry also urged pilgrims to abstain from using the visa for employment purposes and to ensure they depart before the expiration date of their visa.

Saudi Arabia Umrah Visa Guide for 2024

Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world come to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj and Umrah. To make it easier for more Umrah pilgrims to come and visit the Holy Mosques, the Pilgrim Experience Program has made things more digital and accessible, including the Umrah visa application.

From this article, you will learn all about the Umrah visa 2024 — the new rules, the documents required, how to obtain it, and how to get a compliant Umrah visa photo.

Table of contents

Umrah visa: new rules for 2024, umrah visa vs e-visa to saudi arabia, can you apply for umrah visa online, umrah visa application process, documents required for umrah visa application, saudi arabia visa photo requirements, get an umrah visa photo online, take a saudi visa photo with phone, umrah visa fees, umrah visa duration, can umrah visa be extended.

An Umrah visa allows Muslims to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah pilgrimage, which is a Muslim religious event that can be performed at any time of the year.

Recently, Saudi Arabia announced that people with permanent residency in countries such as the European Union, the UK, and the US no longer need an Umrah visa to perform the pilgrimage. The idea behind this is to make the process of performing Umrah more convenient, improve the services provided to pilgrims, and enhance the overall experience. This is part of Saudi Arabia's ambitious plan for the year 2030.

If you're eligible, you can now plan your pilgrimage using the Nusuk app from the official Nusuk platform , which is mandatory for pilgrims. You will even be able to go straight to your Umrah pilgrimage as soon as you arrive. Also, you can now go on a pilgrimage with just a transit visa if you're flying on Saudi Arabia's main airline.

In addition, Saudi Arabia now offers Umrah visa upon arrival for pilgrims from more countries. The list has grown to include the UK, USA, several European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Brunei, and China. These visas are good for 90 days and can be picked up whether you're arriving by plane, boat, or car.

But remember, if you want to perform the Hajj, the great annual Muslim pilgrimage, you will need a different visa than the Umrah visa.

The Umrah Visa and Tourist E-Visa for Saudi Arabia have differences in their purposes, eligibility, and requirements for application. While the tourist e-visa, is available to citizens of 49 countries and allows holders freedom to explore the entire country, the Umrah visa does not limit applicants by nationality, but restricts travel to Jeddah, Makkah, and Medina and is available only to Muslims.

You can apply for your Umrah visa online through the official Nusuk platform . This e-service allows travelers from anywhere to plan their visit, obtain an e-visa, and book hotels and flights all in one place.

Umrah visa how to apply? To get your Umrah visa, you can contact a travel agency that offers special Umrah packages. To obtain an Umrah visa without agent you can apply directly to the embassy or, if you are eligible, apply for a Saudi e-visa, which is a popular choice for many Muslims planning to perform Umrah because it's quick and easy.

Follow these steps if you're applying through a travel agency:

  • Choose a travel agency that is approved to process Umrah visa applications. These agencies work with the Saudi government to obtain visas.
  • Gather your documents (see list below), including a completed Umrah Visa Application Form.
  • Submit your form and all required documents to an approved travel agent or through online platforms for processing.

Please remember that once you're in Saudi Arabia, you'll need to download two important apps to your smartphone:

  • The Tawakkalna app that shows your vaccination status. It's required to enter hotels, restaurants, and mosques.
  • The Nusuk app , to book prayer times and link it to your Tawakkalna app.

Getting your Umrah visa usually takes between 24 hours and 3 business days, depending on where you're applying from. Once you have your visa, you're ready to go to Saudi Arabia.

Can I obtain an Umrah visa without package? These days, you can apply for an Umrah visa online through an e-visa service in some countries, bypassing travel agencies. Still, you'll need to buy an Umrah package because the visa is only for the pilgrimage. This way, your stay and activities will be within the established rules.

If you're not using a package, another option is to apply for a tourist visa. This allows you to visit Saudi Arabia, but, keep in mind, that this visa has different rules than an Umrah visa.

Here are the documents you need to apply for an Umrah visa according to the Umrah visa requirements:

  • A fully completed original Umrah visa application form.
  • A recent, passport-sized color photo with a white background.
  • A passport, valid for at least six months at the time of application.
  • A confirmed, non-refundable airline ticket. Remember about Umrah visa restrictions during the Hajj season and the exit date.
  • If you're not applying from your home country, you'll need a valid residency permit.
  • A certificate of vaccination against meningococcal meningitis is required. It must be issued at least 10 days before you enter Saudi Arabia, but not more than three years old. You must bring this certificate with you.
  • Proof of being a Muslim: If it's not obvious from your name that you are Muslim, you should bring a certificate from a mosque or Islamic center confirming your faith.
  • If a woman is traveling with a male family member (mahram), a document proving their relationship, such as a marriage or birth certificate, is required.
  • *Note: Women over 45 can apply without a mahram if they are part of a group and don't need to provide proof of relationship.

When applying for a Saudi visa, including an Umrah visa, you need to make sure your photo meets certain rules. Here's what you need:

  • Your visa photo size should be 2×2 inches or 200x200 pixels.
  • The photo must be clear, with a minimum resolution of 600 dpi.
  • Your photo must be in color, not black and white.
  • Keep the background plain white, with no patterns or other colors.
  • Look directly at the camera with your face in the center of the photo, occupying 70% to 80% of the photo.
  • Wear clothing that is a different color from the white background. If you wear a head covering for religious reasons, make sure it doesn't cover your forehead or chin.
  • The photo should be recent, no more than six months old, to show how you look now.

While the Umrah visa doesn't cost anything, travel agencies may charge their Umrah visa fee for visa processing and other services related to Umrah, which can bring the total Umrah visa rate to around $100 to $400.

If you're looking for a Saudi e-visa that includes Umrah, here's what it might cost:

  • The tourist e-visa is SAR 535 (about USD 142), which includes full medical insurance during your stay.
  • If you get your tourist visa upon arrival, it will cost SAR 480 (about USD 127).

What is Umrah visa validity after stamping? The one-year Umrah visa allows multiple entries with an Umrah visa duration of up to 90 days per visit to Saudi Arabia.

However, if you're visiting during Ramadan, you must leave by the end of the holy month, no matter how long you stay.

Please, note that an Umrah visa during Hajj is not available — this visa is specifically valid throughout the year except for Hajj season, as pilgrims are not eligible to perform Umrah during the Hajj season.

What is Umrah visa exit date? The holder of the Umrah visa should leave the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before the 29th of Dhul-Qi'dah 1445, which corresponds to the 6th of June 2024.

You cannot extend an Umrah visa beyond its original period. Once you have your Umrah visa, the dates are set in stone. You must complete your pilgrimage within the timeframe of the visa. This is now 90 days, which is enough time to complete all the Umrah rituals. It's important to leave Saudi Arabia before your visa expires to avoid fines or being banned from future visits.

Saudi Arabia

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Saudi Arabia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Saudi Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Saudi Arabia.

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Previous travel to Israel

You may not be allowed to enter Saudi Arabia if your passport shows that you have travelled to, or were born, in Israel.

Visa requirements

You must get an e-visa or an electronic visa waiver (EVW) either before you travel or on arrival at any of Saudi Arabia’s international airports. The type of e-visa or EVW you choose depends on your reason for travelling and how long you want to stay.

If you overstay your visa, you could face large fines, detention and deportation. You could be banned from returning to Saudi Arabia.

Applying for an e-visa

You can apply for an e-visa if you are a tourist. You must get an e-visa to perform Umrah.

E-visas are:

  • valid for 365 days from the date of issue
  • for visits of up to 90 days
  • for multiple entries

Apply online or on arrival at any of Saudi Arabia’s international airports.

You will need a separate visa for Hajj. See Pilgrimage .

Applying for an electronic visa waiver (EVW)

You can apply for an electronic visa waiver (EVW) if you’re travelling for:

  • medical treatment
  • Umrah (outside of Hajj Season)

An EVW allows you to enter Saudi Arabia once and stay for up to 6 months.

Apply online for an EVW at least 48 hours before your flights, or up to 90 days in advance. You will need to give your flight details.

Travelling overland

Your visa may only allow you to enter Saudi Arabia by air. If you plan to travel to Saudi Arabia by the Bahrain causeway, check your visa before travelling. Ask your travel agent or the Saudi Embassy if you need help.

Travelling through Saudi Arabia

If you’re transferring through Saudi Arabia, you may need a transit visa if:

  • you will pass through immigration control
  • you will leave Saudi Arabia on a separate ticket to the one you arrive on
  • the connecting time between your flights is more than 12 hours

Check with your airline or travel agency if you require a transit visa.

Exit, re-entry and final exit permits

If you live in Saudi Arabia, you must get an exit or re-entry permit from your sponsor to leave and re-enter the country. If you leave Saudi Arabia on a final exit permit, you must apply for a new visa to return to the country.

Wives and children of Saudi nationals

If you’re a woman married to a Saudi national, you must get a re-entry or final exit permit from your husband to leave Saudi Arabia. This also applies to children of Saudi nationals.

Flight restrictions around Hajj

If you plan to travel around the time of the Hajj pilgrimage, check with your airline for any flight restrictions.

The Saudi authorities have stopped visitors who are not performing Hajj from flying to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif. You may need a Hajj visa to board flights to these places during Hajj.

You will still be able to enter Saudi Arabia through other airports.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Saudi Arabia guide .

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

  • a yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • meningococcal quadrivalent vaccine

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Saudi Arabia. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It is illegal to import:

  • pork and pork products
  • pornographic material
  • distillery equipment
  • re-treaded or used tyres
  • used clothing except for personal use

certain sculptures such as religious symbols     Other items may be examined, including:

  • personal videos
  • electronic devices

You may need to special approval to bring:

  • agricultural seeds
  • live animals
  • religious books (except for personal use)
  • chemicals and harmful materials
  • some pharmaceutical products
  • wireless equipment
  • radio-controlled model airplanes
  • archaeological artefacts

Using technical equipment

You may need a licence for:

  • satellite phones
  • listening or recording devices
  • radio transmitters
  • powerful cameras or binoculars

If you need information on customs rules, contact the Saudi Embassy .

Saudi Arabia sets deadline for Umrah pilgrims to depart kingdom

Umrah visa duration will not be extended beyond 90-day period and cannot be converted

Saudi Arabia: Umrah pilgrims in Ramadan topped 30 million

Dubai: The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in Saudi Arabia has announced that Dhul Qadah 29, 1445 (June 6), will be the final day for Umrah pilgrims to leave the Kingdom, as part of the preparations for the upcoming Hajj season.

The ministry stated that the Umrah visa for foreign pilgrims has a validity of 90 days from the date of entry into Saudi Arabia.

The clarification came in response to numerous inquiries received through the ministry’s “Beneficiary Care” account on the X social media platform.

The announcement follows earlier reports that stated Dhul Qadah 15, 1445, as the last date for Umrah visa holders to enter Saudi Arabia this year. Additionally, it was clarified that the visa’s validity extends for three months from the date of issuance, not from the date of entry.

The ministry further emphasised that the Umrah visa duration will not be extended beyond the 90-day period and cannot be converted into another type of visa.

Applications for Umrah visas can be made through the approved electronic platforms for Umrah services, accessible at https://nusuk.sa/ar/partners.

This measure is intended to ensure the orderly and efficient flow of pilgrims to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, drawing visitors from around the globe.

Saudi Arabia issued new Umrah visa regulations before Hajj 2024

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has made important changes to Umrah visas for the Hajj 2024 season. The visa validity period now starts from Dhul Qadah 15 instead of Dhul Qadah 29, which helps make pilgrimages smoother. Umrah pilgrims must leave before Dhul Qadah 15, a change that’s two weeks earlier than before, making the pilgrimage process easier for those visiting Makkah and Madinah.

A significant change is that Umrah visas are valid for three months from the date they’re issued, not from when people enter Saudi Arabia. This change is part of the Ministry’s collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to improve the overall pilgrimage experience.

These updates are vital as Saudi Arabia gets ready to welcome pilgrims for the Hajj 2024 pilgrimage, showing the country’s dedication to ensuring a smooth and organized journey for everyone involved. Keep an eye out for more updates as the Hajj 2024 season gets closer.

saudi visit visa umrah

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah on Sunday disclosed the expiry date for Umrah visas for foreign pilgrims, as the country gears up to welcome Hajj pilgrims in the upcoming months.

According to the  Saudi Gazette , the ministry announced that the expiry date for Umrah visas has been pushed back Dhul Qadah 29 to Dhul Qadah 15

This means that foreign Umrah pilgrims must leave the country before Dhul Qadah 15.

This move comes as part of the government’s attempt to ensure a smooth flow of pilgrims to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah from all over the world for the annual pilgrimage of Hajj.

The ministry also clarified that the validity of the three-month Umrah visa will begin from the date of issuance, instead of previously approved validity from the date of entry into Saudi Arabia.

This clarification in response to a number of inquiries made through X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the minstry, the validity of the Umrah visa is three months from the date of its issuance, provided that it expires no later than Dhul Qadah 15.

This is in accordance with the coordination made between the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“This date of Dhul Qadah 15 was approved, two weeks (14 days) earlier than the previously announced expiry date of Dhul Qadah 29,” the Ministry added.
