The inside story

The survival of Leonardo’s masterpiece is almost as amazing as its vision. It was already being ‘restored’ in 1726, with an ill-advised application of caustic solvents and varnish. In 1770, Giusseppe Mazza repainted much of the original in oil. In 1853, Stefano Barezzi tried to detach the painting from the wall but failed and instead glued the paint fragments to the base.

Only in 1903 was it discovered that the painting was done in tempera, not oil, and its surface was cleaned accordingly. A bomb nearly destroyed the refectory in 1943, but the work was successfully cleaned of mildew and lightened in 1947.

Modern restoration showed that the historical over-painting was eating the original and causing it to flake. The decision was therefore made to remove everything added to the mural since it was completed in 1498 – an extremely time-consuming microscopic task using advanced technology. Today, the painting is preserved by an air-filtration system, a monitored environment, and dust-filtering technology. Visitors are limited to 25 people for 15 minutes each time.

Opening times

  • 8.15am-6.45pm – Tuesday to Sunday
  • CLOSED: Mondays and public holidays 1 January, 1 May, 25 December

About The Last Supper

Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan was behind the creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper. The Duke had adopted Santa Maria delle Grazie as his court church and wanted to decorate it in a manner that reflected his wealth and power. This meant a great painting by a great artist.

Leonardo began work in 1495 on the northern wall of the refectory and completed the painting three years later, the complete image measuring 15x29ft. Contrary to popular belief, it was not a fresco, which required fast and decisive work before the wet plaster dried. Leonardo liked to take his time and change his mind, so he designed a new kind of application using tempera (an egg-based paint).

Alas, the great genius Leonardo made a mistake this time. His base for the painting included pitch and mastic, which did not bond the pigment as well or as permanently as he had hoped. The aesthetic considerations, however, were sublime. Leonardo created his amazing illusions of perspective using a nail in the wall and strings radiating from it to ensure that all would be correct

The subject was a common one in churches, but Leonardo’s innovation was to create a sense of drama and movement by portraying the exact moment when Jesus announced that one of his disciples would betray him. What we see is a radiating wave of shocked reaction. He also chose to portray all attendees in a straight line so that each could receive due attention.

It’s said that the faces in the work are based on real people known to the artist. Judas may have been a real-life local prisoner or criminal and, here, Leonardo puts him among the others rather than separate (as traditional dictated). Judas is the only one who seems not to be outraged or surprised.

What to know about milan from our local guides.

What are the top things to do in Milan?

Milan offers something for everyone, whether you’re into fashion, art, history, or just about anything else. Here are a few things to do in Milan that are worth checking out.

  • Visit the Duomo , Milan’s iconic Gothic masterpiece and the largest cathedral in Italy, and climb to the rooftop for breathtaking city views.
  • Feast your eyes on Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
  • Explore Sforza Castle , an imposing medieval fortress-turned-museum that houses various art collections, including Michelangelo's unfinished masterpiece, the Pietà Rondanini.
  • Shop your way around Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an elegant gallery known for its stunning architecture in addition to its impressive collection of luxury fashion brands.
  • Discover an impressive collection of Italian Renaissance art, including works by Caravaggio, Raphael, and Mantegna, at the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery.
  • Stroll along the picturesque Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese canals, lined with trendy bars, cafes, boutiques, and art galleries.

How can I get tickets for the Last Supper?

While it is possible to book Last Supper tickets online, the official website isn’t very user-friendly and offers little to no flexibility in case your plans change. Your best bet is to go with a guided tour to guarantee a hassle-free experience and ensure you get in. Both our Best of Milan Tour and our Sforza Castle Tour with Last Supper offer skip-the-line, pre-reserved access to the famous (and rapidly deteriorating!) masterpiece, along with the context you need to fully appreciate da Vinci’s genius.

What are the best things to do in Milan with kids?

Milan is a fantastic city for families and many of its top attractions, including the Duomo and the Last Supper, are easy to visit with little ones. Parco Sempione is a sprawling green space in the heart of Milan with plenty of space for kids to run free, and nearby Sforza Castle is a fascinating visit for travelers of all ages. Kids will love exploring the castle on our Milan walking tour !

What typical foods should I try in Milan?

Milan might not be as famous as Naples or Bologna when it comes to gastronomy, but there are still plenty of delicious typical foods from Milan that are worth a try.

First things first: risotto. Rice is more common than pasta here in the north of Italy, and risotto alla Milanese is arguably its best iteration. It’s creamy, saffron-infused, and a true culinary masterpiece.

Plenty of other staple dishes of Milanese cuisine are similarly hearty and filling—perfect for the chilly winter months. Ossobuco (braised veal shanks cooked with vegetables, wine, and broth), cassoeula (a pork and cabbage stew), and the famous minestrone soup are all commonly found on menus and family tables throughout Milan.

Craving something sweet? Crumbly and buttery sbrisolona cake is one of Milan’s best-known desserts. If you’re visiting around Christmastime, be sure to try the famous panettone—though it’s now enjoyed throughout Italy and beyond, it has its roots here in Milan!

When is the best time to visit Milan?

There’s really no bad time of year to visit Milan. It all depends on your personal travel style, budget, and the kinds of experiences you’re looking to have.

As with much of Italy, the spring and fall “shoulder seasons” offer beautiful weather and a pleasant atmosphere in the city without the crowds. While summer is easily hotter and more crowded, it also offers dozens of festivals and events, including outdoor concerts at Sforza Castle. It’s also a lovely time of year to enjoy a day trip to picturesque Lake Como, just two and a half hours away by train.

Winter is the quietest time of year to visit Milan, as well as the most budget friendly. While temperatures can be quite chilly and snow is a possibility (this is northern Italy, after all!), the city won’t be nearly as crowded with tourists and offers a more relaxed atmosphere.

How do I use public transport in Milan?

Milan offers a modern and efficient public transportation system. With five metro lines and dozens of buses and trams, there are plenty of options to get you wherever you need to go. Tickets start at just €1.60 for a single journey and can be purchased at self-service kiosks, newsstands, and ATM (Azienda Transporti Milanesi) service centers throughout the city.

Santa Maria delle Grazie

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a Dominican convent and church complex of immense historical and artistic significance. The construction of this splendid edifice commenced in 1463, following the generous gift of land from Count Gaspare Vimercati to the Dominican Fathers, and it was completed in 1490. The church's architecture beautifully combines elements of Renaissance and Gothic styles, but the true treasure lies within the convent's refectory, where one of the art world's most celebrated masterpieces, The Last Supper, is preserved.

The Refectory

As you explore the complex, your guide will point out the Chapter House and Parlour, where discussions and meetings took place, and that was built by Guiniforte Solari, who who drew inspiration for his design from the Dominican Convent of San Marco in Florence. Towards the north, you'll find the library, while the western side of the convent still houses the refectory. During the bombing in 1943, the refectory suffered significant damage, leading the roof, vaults, and the eastern wall to collapse.

Two paintings, The Last Supper and The Crucifixion by Donato Montorfano, can still be admired on the short sides of the refectory's hall.

Admire Da Vinci’s Famous Fresco

Along with your group, you’ll enjoy 15 minutes with Leonardo da Vinci’s breathtaking fresco. Stare in amazement at The Last Supper’s grandeur, which features a detailed depiction of Jesus Christ’s last meal with his disciples. Painted between 1495 and 1498, this iconic mural depicts the emotional intensity and drama of the biblical event. The mural's composition, innovative use of perspective, and lifelike portrayal of the figures have secured its place as one of Leonardo's greatest achievements. Despite the time and wartime damage, diligent restoration efforts have allowed visitors to behold this extraordinary masterpiece, offering a glimpse into the brilliance of Leonardo da Vinci's artistic prowess and his profound understanding of human emotion.

Your guide will explain the history of the painting, along with stories of the artist himself, as you take in this iconic masterpiece.
