Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.
During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .
The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.
Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.
With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.
"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)
This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery. Listen here.
"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)
The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.
"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)
The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. Listen here.
"Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)
The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”
"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)
Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.
"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)
The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.
"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)
If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.
"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)
Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.
"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)
More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.
"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)
Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Listen here.

JonMarc Grodi’s interest in helping people understand the Catholic faith goes back to his childhood. His father, Marcus, a former Presbyterian minister, brought their whole family into the Church when JonMarc was only five years old. Growing up around converts and those exploring the Catholic faith, he learned to appreciate the gift of what it means to be Catholic, and how to effectively communicate the beauty and truth of the Faith with those seeking a home in the Church.
JonMarc went on to work in campus ministry while pursuing his undergraduate degree in Philosophy at Bowling Green State University, and later earned a Masters Degree in Philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville. Throughout this time, he remained connected to the mission that his father started with the Coming Home Network, and in 2022, JonMarc became Executive Director of the organization.
After 25 years of hosting The Journey Home on EWTN, Marcus Grodi passed the torch to his son JonMarc, who in his role as the new host brings to the program a lifetime of experience working with Catholic converts.
JonMarc lives with his wife, Teresa, and their six children in Perrysburg, Ohio.

Premiere of new Kristen Stewart film erupted into violence and chaos after mass walkout
Attendees have spoken out about the ordeal.
Michael Slavin
Warning: This article contains discussion of discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community which some readers may find distressing.
A premiere of a new Kristen Stewart film in Belgium descended into chaos - leading to a mass walkout.
The movie was being screened at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) when a barrage of horrendous homophobic and misogynistic comments caused widespread disruption.
The A24-produced thriller - called Love Lies Bleeding - drew a massive audience to the 1,400-seat auditorium.
While this was a predominantly female and queer crowd, there was a small contingent of misogynists hellbent on ruining the screening for others.
According to Variety, various same sex romance scenes in the flick drew 'homophobic heckles and jeers' at the premiere.
The film's synopsis reads: "Lou (Kristen Stewart) is a reclusive gym manager who falls hard for Jackie (Katy M. O'Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who's heading to Las Vegas to pursue her dream. Their love soon leads to violence as they get pulled deep into the web of Lou's criminal family."
Disgustingly, one scene in Love Lies Bleeding which displays ‘sexual coercion’ was met with the cheers by a small portion of the crowd.
A statement provided by the attendees to Variety said : “We know the difference between standard jokes and lesbophobic insults and commentary.
“When audience members applaud during [what we feel to be] a rape scene, when they pantomime masturbation and catcall the actresses on screen by shouting ‘get naked,’ ‘she wants c**k,’ ‘disgusting,’ and ‘dirty d***s’ at the slightest scene of lesbian intimacy, once spectators stand up to leave the theater or ask for respect, only to be booed, insulted and physically assaulted, and once dozens of lesbians leave the theatre in tears, dirtied, degraded and shocked, we can’t speak of a ‘good-natured’ atmosphere.”
While some members of the crowd walked out from about 20 minutes onwards due to the atmosphere, others began arguing - with a few even engaging in physical fights.
In total between 60 and 80 attendees walked out and started protesting the screening, requesting it be cut short when they were refused refunds.
Attendee Elina Fischer told Variety: “Things spun wildly out of hand… we were afraid for our lives.
“The kinds of people who say such things during a film screening are the kinds of people who assault us. So, we got scared and had to get out.”
The Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival has confirmed to Variety that police were called to break up the protest.
Jonathon Lenaerts, of the BIFFF, said: “We have a duty to contextualize.
"To make sure that all communities feel welcome and on the same footing.
“The humor in the room should never be targeted and mean spirited, and all exceptions are intolerable.
“To be frank, a gram of s**t will spoil a kilo of caviar, and right now, we’re going to do everything we can to remove that gram of s**t.
“We will take direct measures: If someone makes inappropriate comments, they’ll be immediately thrown out.”
Elina went on to say: “This film represents us.
“It was made for and by our community, so to have our experience ruined by homophobes is terrible.
“We all feel very sad, shocked and angry, because we feel that our position cannot exist without attack. [The fight against] homophobia still has a long way to go.”

Isabella Strahan shares positive update in brain tumor battle
The USC student revealed in January she is battling medulloblastoma.
Isabella Strahan shared some good news as she continues to battle medulloblastoma , a type of brain tumor.
Strahan revealed Wednesday on her YouTube channel that she will be done with chemotherapy in May after her treatments were reduced.
"My doctor just called me and told me I only have to do two more rounds of chemotherapy, and it's like the biggest thing. I'm so happy," Strahan said, while crying what she described as "happy tears." "So I'll be done in May and I can kind of try to have a summer to feel better."
Strahan, the daughter of " Good Morning America " co-anchor Michael Strahan , said she was originally told she would have to do six rounds of chemotherapy, which would have had her finishing treatments at the end of July.
Now, with her rounds of chemotherapy reduced to four, Isabella Strahan said she will have more time off from treatments before returning in the fall to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

The 19-year-old was just one month into her freshman year at USC last fall when she began experiencing headaches and nausea. After testing, doctors discovered she had developed a fast-growing 4-centimeter tumor, larger than a golf ball, in the back of her brain, which was diagnosed as medulloblastoma.
Medulloblastoma is a type of malignant tumor that accounts for about 20% of all childhood brain tumors, according to estimates published in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience . About 300 children are diagnosed with medulloblastoma each year.
Since her diagnosis, which she revealed publicly in January, Isabella Strahan has undergone brain surgery as well as several rounds of radiation treatment.
She began chemotherapy in February and has endured several hospitalizations due to setbacks including fevers.

Our journey so far
BAT was founded in 1902 and was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1912. A constituent of the FTSE 100 since its creation in 1984, we have evolved, becoming the only truly global company in our sector.
Today, that evolution continues. We know combustible products pose serious health risks. The only way to avoid those risks is to not start or to quit smoking. That’s why we are changing: creating new products, backed by science, that provide adult smokers with smokeless alternatives.
Our Strategy
To deliver on our vision of Building a Smokeless World, our aim is to become a predominantly smokeless business – with 50% of our revenue in Non-Combustible products by 2035. We will do so by actively encouraging adult smokers to switch to smokeless alternatives – in essence, to ‘Switch to Better.’
To enable this, our strategy is built around the three pillars of priorities:
- Quality Growth
- Sustainable Future
- Dynamic Business
Our Strategic Navigator below outlines the nine priority building blocks that support the achievement of our ambition to Build a Smokeless World.
Quality Growth
Delivering Quality Growth emphasises the transition to a more balanced focus on top-line and bottom-line delivery, centred around our brands and innovation, and continuing to seek long-term opportunities Beyond Nicotine.
The key building blocks of the Quality Growth pillar are:
- Inspiring New Category Innovations & Brands
- Managed Combustibles Transition
- Beyond Nicotine Foundations
Our commitments under Quality Growth:
- Progressing toward quality, margin-accretive growth in smokeless products
- FMC volume decline but expecting continuing value delivery
- Sensibly investing for the future Beyond Nicotine
Sustainable Future
Building a Sustainable Future is about seeking to actively migrate consumers away from cigarettes and to smokeless alternatives sustainably, responsibly and with integrity.
Science will be a primary driver of our efforts, supported by more active external engagement with regulators and other key stakeholders, while embedding sustainability across our organisation.
The key building blocks of the Sustainable Future pillar are:
- Tobacco Harm Reduction Acceptance
- Shaping the Landscape
- Leading in Sustainability and Integrity
Our commitments under Sustainable Future:
- Building a Smokeless World
- Investing in the products, science and engagement to make A Better Tomorrow™ a reality
- Conducting our business sustainably and with integrity
Dynamic Business
The Dynamic Business pillar is about building a future-fit, data-driven organisation and ensuring we are efficient and effective in all of our operations.
We believe we can create the financial flexibility to invest in our people, our products and provide returns to our investors.
The key building blocks of the Dynamic Business pillar are:
- Exciting, Winning Company
- Operational Excellence
- Capital Effectiveness
Our commitments under Dynamic Business:
- Creating a diverse, inclusive and people-oriented place to work
- Being data-driven and delivering operational excellence/cost management
- Focused on investors returns
We’re making progress
Our ambition remains to have 50 million consumers of our Non-Combustible products by 2030 and to accelerate the growth of our New Category revenues at a faster rate than our total revenue, reaching £5 billion in 2025.
We have already made good progress towards these targets: we now have 23.9 million consumers 1 of Non-Combustible. Revenue from these products accounts for 16.5% of Group revenue, as at 31 December 2023.

Top teachers and a passion for people fuel 200,000th graduate's journey
16 April 2024
Fantastic teachers have played a key role in the career direction of Emily Wilson, who graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) , at a ceremony this morning at the University of South Australia’s City West Campus.
Emily’s achievement has also marked a special milestone for the broader UniSA community, as the University’s 200,000 th graduate.
Emily’s decision to study psychology was strongly influenced by her year 12 psychology teacher, whose infectious passion for the subject resonated with their small, close-knit class.
“I was particularly interested in cognitive neuroscience, about brain function and cognition and how it has an effect on psychology,” Emily says.
Once at UniSA, Emily’s early experiences assured her it had been the right decision.
“The staff we had teaching us were amazing and really engaging,” she says.
“ Dr Alex Chatburn taught the initial intro to neuroscience courses which were very interesting, he has obviously worked in the field for a long time and did a good job making very complex stuff understandable. It can be weird to dip your toe in this field as there are so many rabbit holes to go down, it could easily be overwhelming.
“I loved all of the cognitive neuroscience subjects, they were cool to learn, and the anatomy subjects in the early years were great also”.
UniSA’s anatomy teaching team is renowned for its innovative and engaging approach, which saw them take out a national award recently .
With cognitive neuroscience and anatomy Emily’s favourite subjects, it’s not surprising that she’s keen to combine these in her future career, and is now studying a Master in Occupational Therapy at UniSA.
“I’d like to work in something related to neuroanatomy, such as helping people affected by strokes, or spinal injuries,” she says.
“Psychology and Occupational Therapy are both about working with clients all the time, which is really important to me.
“I’ve worked in hospitality throughout my tertiary studies and I have thoroughly enjoyed that, it fuels my love for interacting with people.”
Applications for UniSA’s Bachelor of Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience ), Bachelor of Psychology , Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and Bachelor of Psychology (Counselling and Interpersonal Skills) are open now for mid-year entry .
