The Smile Announce 2023 North American Tour
Marc Ducrest
The Smile toured North America late last year, and it was awesome . This summer, they’re coming back. The Thom Yorke/Jonny Greenwood/Tom Skinner trio has announced a month of dates from late June to late July, mostly in the eastern half of the US, with one stop each in Mexico and Canada. Other than a New York show at Forest Hills Stadium, it’s the Radiohead offshoot’s first show in each of these cities.
The announcement is accompanied by news of the limited edition vinyl EP Europe: Live Recordings 2022 , culled from various live performances last year. Five of the six songs are from the Smile’s debut album A Light For Attracting Attention ; the other is Yorke’s 2009 solo track “FeelingPulledApartByHorses,” which the Smile included in their live sets last year. Out March 10, the EP follows another live album the band released in December, The Smile At Montreux Jazz Festival July 2022 .
The Smile were in the process of writing their second album during last fall’s tour. How awesome would it be if that’s out before this summer? Below, check out the EP tracklist and the Smile’s tour itinerary.

The Smile is a British rock band featuring Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, bass, keys) and Jonny Greenwood (guitar, bass, keys) from Radiohead, along with drummer Tom Skinner. Their music draws influences from various genres such as post-punk, progressive rock, Afrobeat, and electronic music.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, The Smile emerged and surprised audiences with their debut performance, streamed by the Glastonbury Festival in May 2021. Early in 2022, they released six singles and held their first live shows in London, which were broadcasted online. In May, The Smile received critical acclaim for their debut album, "A Light for Attracting Attention," produced by Nigel Godrich, who is known for his work with Radiohead.
In 2022 and 2023, The Smile embarked on a tour across Europe and North America. They also released two live EPs, "The Smile (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, July 2022)" and "Europe: Live Recordings 2022." Their second album, "Wall of Eyes," is slated for release in 2024.
The band consists of Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke, both from Radiohead, along with drummer Tom Skinner, who previously played with acts like Sons of Kemet and collaborated with Greenwood on the soundtrack of the 2012 film "The Master." The members of The Smile have chosen not to give interviews about their project.
Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's longtime producer, is at the helm of production for The Smile. He mentioned that the project originated from Greenwood's creative output during the COVID-19 lockdown, with the pandemic and Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien's solo album keeping him busy. The exploration of different musical avenues by Radiohead members is seen as a positive development by their drummer, Philip Selway, who believes it's beneficial to see how other musicians interpret their ideas.
The band's name, "The Smile," is derived from a poem by Ted Hughes. Thom Yorke explained that it's not about a cheerful smile but rather the deceptive façade people put on in their daily lives.

Although they’re both ’90s alt-rock bands with enduring fanbases, there’s a world of difference between Radiohead and Weezer. While each new Radiohead album delivers challenging musical left turns that dazzle critics and add depth to their catalogue, Weezer has been eternally chasing the past. Their legacy was cemented by two classic ’90s albums, followed by decades of lesser material which engages fans but always falls behind their past glory. Fittingly, “In the Garage,” from their self-titled 1994 album, is a statement of purpose that has been guiding them ever since: What if we were only ever kids, shredding in our parent’s house, pretending we were in Kiss?
Popular on Variety
Highlights included the piano ballad “Pana-vision,” which devolved into a noisy outro, complete with Greenwood attacking his electric bass with a bow; “Bending Hectic,” an experimental and extended jam which could live alongside “A Thousand Leaves”-era Sonic Youth; the slinky, minimalist “The Smoke”; and set-closer “You Will Never Work in Television Again,” a rousing, pissed-off rocker, aided by frantic saxophone courtesy of show opener Robert Stillman.
The Smile also returned for a freewheeling encore, consisting of two unreleased tracks and the relatively rare Yorke solo cut “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses.” Although the songs weren’t well known, they kicked up the lightest section of the night, signaled by notorious dancer Yorke cutting a rug all over the stage.
Credit the audio engineers who kept the show crisp as both Yorke and Greenwood fiddled endlessly with vocal distortion, switched pedals, changed synths mid-song and occasionally plucked a harp. All of the songs sounded lush, full and balanced, with Yorke’s ageless falsetto floating above the mix.
At one point, Yorke specified that “We’re a new band,” a wink to the countless Radiohead T-shirts in the crowd. But given their enthusiasm in playing new songs, as well as the fact that more than a third of the set was devoted to unreleased material getting worked out onstage, it’s clear the Smile is more than a pandemic hobby.

Having just completed a triumphant tour, The Smile have confirmed a new run of North American dates for summer 2023. Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner will kick off the 14-date excursion on June 22nd with the band’s first ever show in Mexico City. The tour will then proceed throughout the United States and Canada, marking The Smile’s debut live performances in every city they play—with the exception of their return to New York where they’ll headline Forest Hills Stadium on July 7th.
For those who can’t make it out to one of these shows, The Smile are also releasing a limited edition live EP simply titled Europe: Live Recordings 2022. True to its title, the EP is comprised of live recordings of fan favorites from The Smile’s widely acclaimed debut album, A Light For Attracting Attention, as well as the band’s rendition of Thom’s 2009 solo track “FeelingPulledApartByHorses.” Europe: Live Recordings was recorded in various cities over the course of The Smile’s first ever tour this past summer. Replace the needles and cartridges on your turntables as this release, out March 10th via XL Recordings, is vinyl only.

The Hologic WTA Tour heads back to Europe, where the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, this year's first WTA 500 event on red clay, will take place in Stuttgart, Germany.
The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is typically full of marquee names, and this year is no exception, with eight of the world's Top 10 players expected to participate.
Here's what you need to know about Stuttgart:
When does the tournament start?
Main-draw play starts on Monday, April 15th, and continues through Sunday, April 21st. The qualifying rounds take place the preceding weekend, on Saturday, April 13th and Sunday, April 14th. The tournament will take place at Stuttgart's Porsche Arena.
Top five storylines on European clay: Swiatek's dominance, Osaka's return
Bjk cup qualifiers 2024: from swiatek to osaka, who's playing and where, rankings watch: charleston champion collins returns to top 20.
The singles main draw contains 28 players, with the top four seeds receiving first-round byes. 20 singles players are direct entries, and there will be four wild cards and four qualifiers.
The doubles main draw will have 16 teams, two of which will be wild-card teams.
Stuttgart is on Central European Summer Time (GMT+2).
This is one of two indoor-clay tournaments on the Hologic WTA Tour (the other, the inaugural WTA 250 Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole in Rouen, France, takes place during the same week).
The Wilson Roland Garros ball will be used at Stuttgart.
Champions Reel: How Iga Swiatek won Stuttgart 2023
When are the finals.
The singles final will take place at 1:00pm local time on Sunday, April 21st. The doubles final will follow the singles final on Sunday.
Who are the defending champions?
Iga Swiatek won her second straight Porsche Tennis Grand Prix singles title last year, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-4 in a rematch of the 2022 final. Sabalenka has reached the last three Stuttgart finals, finishing runner-up to the World No.1 on each occasion (Ashleigh Barty defeated Sabalenka in the 2021 final).
In last year's doubles draw, Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs also went back-to-back. They defeated Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Giuliana Olmos 6-4, 6-1 to win their second straight Porsche Tennis Grand Prix doubles title.
Who is playing?
The cut-off for singles direct entry was based on the Hologic WTA Tour rankings of March 18th. No.31 Linda Noskova was the last direct entry at that time.
Wild cards have been awarded to two-time Stuttgart champion Angelique Kerber, her fellow Germans Laura Siegemund and Tatjana Maria, and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu.
On Friday, Americans Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro withdrew from the main-draw entry list due to change of schedule. Those withdrawals have moved World No.34 Donna Vekic and Paula Badosa (special ranking of No.34) into the main draw.
