DAY 1- Tierra Atacama - Arrival

Tierra Atacama - Arrival

On arrival to Calama airport, you will be met and transferred to Tierra Atacama Lodge.

On arrival, settle into the comfortable Tierra Atacama Lodge. High in the northern desert of Chile, the Tierra Atacama lodge encapsulates exquisite design, authentic experiences and an intimate, home-away-from-home atmosphere, where a sense of both adventure travel and pure relaxation lingers in the air. In the evening you will be briefed on the excursion options for the days ahead.

*Tierra Atacama does include most activities but may have a limited number of “extra cost” activities, which will be at your own cost and paid locally.

The small oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama lies on an arid high plateau in the Andes Mountains in the heart of some of northern Chile’s most spectacular scenery. Sitting high up in the Altiplano, the Chile desert is known for its captivating landscapes of sand dunes, hot springs, canyons and geysers. Here, glowing sunrises and mind-blowing sunsets are the norm. After dusk, the sky is illuminated with a canopy of blinking stars, a sight unmatched anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere. Come morning, noon or night, the Atacama’s natural splendour and enigmatic energy is inescapable.

DAY 2- Tierra Atacama - Day 2 Excursions

Tierra Atacama - Day 2 Excursions

At Tierra Atacama, there is a range of interesting excursions for you to choose from. Local guides will get to know your interests and physical activity level, helping create a bespoke journey for you to explore the Atacama Desert your way. Below are suggested options you may like to choose from through-out your stay.

High up in the Altiplano lie the glistening lagoons of Aguas Calientes and Tuyajito, whose mystical, tranquil aura can be grasped during a full day tour. Arriving to the remote Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, at more than four thousand meters of altitude, for an excursion with a surprising backdrop featuring the peace and quiet of the desert and colourful salt lakes. Visiting the town of Socaire and two lookouts over the Salar de Talar, also known as the “Hot Waters.”

The Atacama Desert is also known to be one of the best places on earth for stargazing. So, armed with the largest public telescope in the region and help from the expert guides, you’ll enjoy a fascinating evening of astronomy, something not easily forgotten. Look up to the jet-black canopy, studded with glittering stars and their constellations, easily visible to the naked eye thanks to the Atacama’s lack of artificial light and endless expanse of untouched desert.

DAY 3- Tierra Atacama - Day 3 Excursions

Tierra Atacama - Day 3 Excursions

Feast your eyes on the Tatio Geysers, one of the worlds most impressive geothermal sites and certainly an icon of the Atacama Desert. You’ll set off early this morning to reach the Tatio Geysers just as the sun begins to emerge above the horizon, casting an ethereal glow on vapor columns which tower over us at heights of up to 12 meters. Spending some time appreciating the wonder of this geothermal field, home to over 80 active geysers which protrude from bubbling pools of boiling water.

Or unearth ancient petroglyphs and admire a kaleidoscope of colour at Rainbow Valley, on an exciting half-day excursion in the Atacama Desert, a geological and archaeological treat. Heading first towards Domeyko Mountains and the Rainbow Valley, whose stripes of copper, silver, jade, violet and everything in-between lend this sacred place its name. A 30-minute walk will you time to marvel at the terrain, the result of erosion and environmental processes that created this mineral-rich rock face.

tierra atacama excursions

Tierra Atacama

Tierra Atacama is situated amidst the arid landscape of northern Chile, perfectly hidden in plain sight with its original adobe walls from an old cattle corral and surrounded by native vegetation is where you will find this luxurious desert oasis. All that you will be able to see amidst the reddish-brown desert is green everywhere surrounding the hotel, it is unlike any other property located in the main streets of San Pedro.

Created using local materials and making use of local craftsmen, this subtle architectural wonder serves its purpose and allows its surroundings to shine. With uninterrupted views of the Atacama Desert, volcanos that highlight the horizon and a midnight sky filled with just about every star known to man, this lodge prods you to go out and explore the vast selection of natural, one of a kind wonders with access to a range of all-inclusive outdoor activities and excursions, including walking and hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, star-gazing and night excursions.

Each of the 32 rooms have private terraces with sweeping views of the Atacama Desert and nearby volcanoes with outdoor showers and access to the infinity pool and spa area (spa treatments are not included in the price). The Oriente room category (our absolute favorite) gives you a stunning view of the Licancabur volcano, while the spacious Poniente rooms include soaking tubs and views of the gardens. Both room types combine modern décor together with handcrafted goodies, giving it a very warm, friendly and home-like feel.

We were blown away by the sheer beauty that the surrounding landscape provides, whether you're sipping a cocktail by the pool or hiking around on an excursion, this will be the ultimate base for your Atacama exploration!

  • If the pool is your favorite place to relax after a day full of activities, then this is the perfect property for you. The outdoors features awe-inspiring views of the Licancabur Volcano.
  • There is also an indoor pool for a refreshing morning dip (when the other average temperature is lower).
  • We recommend this property for those who are looking for a combination of contemporary design with local touches, haute cuisine and a selection of excellent 'soft' adventures.
  • Hidden by the lush vegetation, there is also a place to practice yoga or an intimate place for 2 that features an outdoor tub and outdoor shower.
  • Stargazing, at the hotel with its own telescope, is not available during the full moon.
  • Although, if you are more interested in seeing the full moon, then we recommend taking a look at the full moon hike. After a short walk at the lunar landscape beneath the silvery glow of the moon a campfire is made to enjoy a snack in the pure magic of the Atacama desert.
  • Families are welcome at Tierra Atacama and the two-story ‘Family Room’ can accommodate up to six people.

Welcome back to Tierra Atacama!

“After months of waiting we finally made our dream vacation happen,” says Pilar Ferrer, one of the first guests to visit Tierra Atacama in 2021, since its reopening at the beginning of September.  Without a doubt, a dream shared by many of us and one that has finally begun to take shape.

With the beautiful desert landscape as a backdrop and while abiding by all of the preventative measures , guests from different parts of Chile have enjoyed the warm and attentive service that characterizes Tierra Atacama. As always, the kind treatment, guided excursions , the pool with a view of the Licancabur volcano , the natural treatments at Uma Spa, and the hotel’s ambiance, create the perfect combination to rest and restore energy.

“The excellent reception and professionalism of each person that works at Tierra Atacama , made everything perfect. Each day, after the excursions, they surprised us with a diverse, original and delicious menu. Fantastic chef!” comments Pilar, thrilled about the experience with her family.

tierra atacama excursions

Of course, behind every detail there is a group of people that, from different areas of the hotel, work hard to give all of the guests a pleasant stay and wonderful memories.  “The guests are very happy, they have thanked us a lot, especially for the kindness of my colleagues,” comments Paula Valdes, General Manager at Tierra Atacama.

“We always try to be flexible and attentive towards the different needs of our guests, so that their experience is memorable, while complying with the sanitary protocols at all times,” explains Paula.

San Pedro de Atacama is a very special place due to its geography and algo for its culture.  The impressive landscapes of the driest desert in the world are home to an infinite number of stories of Andean villages, and its exceptional scenery tends to bring out lots of questions from its visitors.  Learning more about this corner of the planet also means appreciating the value of its local communities .

tierra atacama excursions

“The guides who accompanied us on all of the excursions were prepared to answer and explain all of our questions.  The geysers and the strength of nature, the altiplano with its mountains, the little villages, the high-altitude wetlands, the vicuñas and flamingos, among many other wondeers, made this trip unforgettable,”  Pilar tells us.

The energy of the desert and its astonishing landscapes give our guests magical moments during the day time and at night.  At Tierra Atacama , all of the rooms have stunning views of the Licancabur volcano and the Andes mountain range.  The night sky is an impressive sight due to the number of stars and planets that can be observed in plain sight.  There are infinite options to inspire, rest, and of course, take some nice photos.

The whole team at Tierra Atacama is happy and excited to welcome our new visitors.  If you would are interested in booking, you can contact us directly through the website or by writing us at [email protected] .  For information about safety protocols and border conditions for foreign tourists, please, visit this page .

Tierra Atacama Boutique Hotel & Spa — Atacama Desert, Chile

Calle Séquitor S/N. San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

This all-inclusive boutique resort is a stylish oasis on the edge of town in the Atacama Desert.

The tiny desert town of San Pedro de Atacama has more than its fair share of luxury all-inclusive hotels, each vying for the attention of travelers looking for start-to-finish service including accommodation, food, drinks, and guided desert adventures. Tierra Atacama is for those who want an easy-going sanctuary in the middle ground between adventure and relaxation.

Modern, angular buildings manage to blend with their desert surroundings while asserting their own style in steel, stone, and glass. Fig trees, pomegranates, rosemary, asparagus, corn, and other produce flourishes around the buildings, supplying part of the kitchen's needs and lending an unexpectedly lush feeling to the grounds. Other areas of the 10-acre property are home to a growing array of solar panels and a large outdoor grilling and dining area for group events and parties, complete with a stage for bands.

The 32 rooms are clustered near the main lodge, bar, and restaurant. Each has A/C and ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, L'Occitane bath products, and gourmet Chilean chocolates from Damien Mercier at turn down.

Oriente rooms, built on the ground level, are intimate and romantic. They offer views of the nearly 20,000-foot-high Licancabur Volcano from almost every vantage point, like private furnished patios, an indoor shower, and an outdoor shower. I tried both showers in my room and the water was not very hot in either and both had very low water pressure. I do realize that Tierra Atacama is in the middle of one of the driest deserts on earth and I agree that water is a precious commodity. However, even the green traveler in me was frustrated with the tepid dribble.

Poniente rooms are located on the second level of a building behind the Oriente rooms to ensure volcano views from these rooms as well. Poniente rooms have a sophisticated loft feel with a sofa and a decorative wall dividing the spacious bedroom and sitting area from the bathroom, which has a bathtub as well as an indoor and outdoor shower.

Finally, there are two duplex units that can sleep six. The master bedroom and bathroom is upstairs and there are two bedrooms downstairs along with a shared bathroom. The master bedroom has A/C, but downstairs bedrooms are fan only. That turns out to be more than sufficient for sleeping since desert temperatures dip dramatically each night. The master bedroom also has a huge furnished patio. The duplex rooms do not have volcano views or indoor/outdoor showers. However, they are much more spacious and a great option for families or small groups of travelers who want to stay together.

All accommodations are the same price because Tierra Atacama, like most all-inclusives, is priced per person using standard all-inclusive rates. Some guests switch rooms mid-stay to experience a different ambiance.

Given the remote location, I was surprised by the reliability and speed of the Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. There are three computers for guest use in the lobby as well as the only TV in the place. However, I never saw anyone using the computers or the TV which is a testament to the allure of Atacama Desert and the draw of Tierra Atacama's relaxing facilities.

The large Uma Spa offers a long list of standard massages and facials at competitive prices (for example, an 80-minute hot stone massage is $120) plus a few surprises like reiki, and lymphatic drain treatments. There's also free yoga on an outdoor yoga platform, a heated indoor pool and jetted tub, and an outdoor pool. While not exactly big enough for laps, the outdoor one does the trick in the desert heat. The adjacent boutique is well-stocked with outdoor clothing, bathing suits, hats, and other essentials you may have forgotten to pack.

Tierra Atacama offers fewer guided excursions than some other Atacama all-inclusives (the adventure menu lists around 20 full-day and half-day outings), however, the main attractions in the surrounding desert are well covered. Skilled guides speak all major languages and tour vans and bicycles are in great shape.

Small group trips have a bespoke feel and flexibility and give guests a chance to meet and share experiences. For those who want or need privacy, Tierra Atacama recently inaugurated a new Tierra Private package that provides a personal guide, driver, and vehicle (priced upon request and subject to availability).

In general, the food is well executed, but fancier than it needs to be. Though the wild boar in red wine and bacon reduction remains a standout meal for me, I (and other guests I spoke with) would have liked to have had more regional or Chilean options on the menu.

There are many vegetarian dishes on the menu, which changes daily, and they're not just boring afterthoughts. Though I'm a meat eater I chose vegetarian options on several occasions and was not disappointed. I was sorely disappointed, however, when I ordered the hamburger from a semi-secret menu that's offered to kids and other picky eaters. What arrived was a processed "meat" patty that was inedible. Wait staff quickly delivered a thin freshly grilled steak in an attempt to salvage a steak sandwich out of the situation, but the damage was done.

Unlike the food, the wine, beer, and cocktails at Tierra Atacama showcase many Chilean standouts. The list of included Chilean wines is varied and compelling with all the major varietals covered. There's also a premium selection of wines from around the world for purchase. Craft beers are offered in addition to mass produced beers. And don't miss the Atacama Sour cocktail which is made with Chilean pisco infused with a fragrant desert plant called rika. I had variations of this cocktail all over San Pedro de Atacama and the version made at Tierra Atacama was the most balanced and enjoyable—the perfect relaxing refreshment after a day of desert adventures.

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day in an active destination like the Atacama Desert and the Tierra Atacama breakfast buffet is ample, fresh, and varied. Choices include smoked salmon and fantastic French baguettes, croissants, and chocolate croissants plus cheese, sliced meats, fresh juices, lots of fruit, and healthy options like yogurt and oatmeal. You can also order eggs as you like them. Then depart your oasis for a day of adventure in the desert.

Web Address: tierrahotels.com Total Number of Rooms: 32 Published rates: US$1,550 per adult for two nights based on double occupancy including all meals, house wines, cocktails, juices, sodas, one full-day or two half-day guided excursions daily, airport transfers from Calama Airport, and taxes. Rates are lower for children.

Tierra Atacama best Atacama hotel

THE PERFECT ADVENTURE HOTEL TO EXPLORE THE ATACAMA DESERT

  • by YouShouldGoHere
  • March 1, 2020
  • in Go Here , Stay Here

[SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE] — Chile is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, that few people know about. Dramatic, jaw-dropping landscapes and massive natural parks.  Chile has been the leader in preserving their amazing natural wonders and packaging them up with adventure tour packages, made easy with outstanding hotels like the Tierra , Explora , or totally luxe Awasi, which is more for millionaires.    All three brands have sister hotels in both the Atacama Desert, Patagonia and other regions (like the Lake District or Easter Island).  I chose the Tierra hotels for my trip in 2013. This is my review of Tierra Atacama, one of the easiest vacation I’ve ever booked, in the most remote locations on the planet.

No matter which hotel brand or price level you choose, you can book a Fire & Ice Tour that brackets both polar opposite regions — like the Atacama Desert or mountainous Patagonia — where you stay in their hotels in each region and they handle all the arrangements and transfers. Each has all-inclusive packages that include daily guides and end-to-end transportation.  They each provide awesome guides for free, not extra, who take you out, pack a gourmet lunch and know everything about everything. I’d rank them on cost as Tierra (best value) Explora (mid-range) and Awasi (incredible 1:1 guide experience, for millionaires).

___________________________________________

Tierra Atacama the best hotel in Atacama

At Tierra Atacama, each day, they ask “What do you feel like doing today? Long hike? Short hike? Salt flats? Some geysers?” And off you go in small groups with other like-minded peeps from the hotel. I never was a guide guy myself, I prefer to get lost on my own, but the Tierras changed my whole outlook, and took travel to a whole new level for me. Spoiled me is a better word for it.

The two Chilean sister hotels of Tierra Hotel s are one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had in my life. It is expensive, but still worth every penny. Everything is included: room, breakfast, lunch, dinner, booze, and the best part — adventure guides. When you add it all up, and being in one of the most remote and foreboding places on the planet, it actually is a great value…an experience that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Set just the right amount of distance outside of the little desert oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama , the Tierra Atacama nestles nicely into the surrounding desert landscape, towering volcanoes in every direction you look. Everything is done just right.

The Tierra Hotels are known for their ground-breaking architecture. Built of local materials and rammed-earth design, it disappears into the landscape. The cool thing about the design of the hotel is that the windows frame a ring of almost a dozen volcanoes, stunningly, in the distance. And the big blue sky. The giant windows allow you to lay in bed and watch the amazing stars blanket the dark night.

It’s All About The Adventure at Tierra Atacama

When you arrive, they immediately give you a glass of wine and sit you down in front of a large map, laying out the adventures ahead. They ask what your interests are, then offer up an long menu of cool things you can do during your stay. Matching the adventure with what you want to do, or not do.

The guides are the best part. They know the land and know their stuff. All are professional, not just desert ski bums. Many have degrees or studies related to the area, like geologists, archeologists. They don’t just take you and show you stuff, they take you somewhere unbelievable and tell you all about it. The history. The geology. And make it totally interesting.

adventure map at Tierra Atacama

I typically prefer to figure out everything on my own and then revel in getting lost, but this guide experience changed my whole world view. I saw things I never thought I’d be interested in. Discovered things I never knew. And the best part — I didn’t have to figure out a single thing. You can do independent travel and stay at a small hotel in San Pedro and then ferret out the dozens of local guide shops showing the same pictures out front, but not know which is good or not. But I can’t imagine doing this area without this ideal setup. The wasted time alone would have killed my whole experience. The places they take you don’t have any road signs, and often you’re the only ones there. Between the two Tierras, by far, the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had.

This guide experience changed my whole world view. I saw things I never thought I’d be interested in. Discovered things I never knew. And the best part — I didn’t have to figure out a single thing.

Everything is based on your desires. Each day you can take either a half- or full-day adventure and then head off with a small group in a great 13 person Dodge van. And then when you’re there, they tell you all about it….often putting on a spread, like enjoying a gourmet breakfast, lunch, or dinner in some of the most stunning landscapes in the world.

I can’t imagine having to piece together your own itinerary, not knowing if one operator is better than the other. I didn’t have to worry about any of that. The Tierra just sets it all up. The best value received I’ve ever had. Worth every penny.

Tierra Atacama activities map

What is awesome about the Tierra Hotel guides is they know where and when is the right time to go to all the best places. And once you get there, they bring a great setup of victuals and drink, right as the sun sets. A perfect ending to a perfect day.

San Pedro de Atacama — The Headquarters for Exploring the Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama adventure headquarters

San Pedro de Atacama, the cool little oasis town that serves as the main base for all the Atacama, is within walking or bike riding distance. I never wanted the leave the hotel, which is opposite of what I typically like to do. It is that good. And the days’ adventures that fulfilling. The town is loaded with tour guides to take you to the same places we went.

More Information on the Atacama Desert

Because it has it’s own microclimates, I’ve been told that you the temperatures are pretty constant and you can visit any time of the year. I was there in late November, which is basically Spring there, and it was perfect. I can’t imagine going at the peak of Summer, it would be scorching hot.

Now, about the nice sheets. There are several luxury hotel chains here that specialize in The Adventure — The Tierra Hotels, Awasi Hotels, Explora, etc. — and they all come with guides that take you to all the cool spots, a different adventure every day, in places with no signs, no instructions, no guides, so do this. I stayed at the Tierra Atacama Hotel outside San Pedro and it was perfect (more about that in a separate post), everything is included, food, local wine, guides, everything. Do this. It is is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. I can’t imagine trying to do it by yourself as most of the places are unmarked and you end up turning off a dirt road that looks like a dead end and the pop out staring at an amazing scene.

You can hike, or not hike. Horseback. Or watch the stars. (Definitely signup for the star-gazing!)  Here’s a great article on Tierra Atacama in National Geographic , Vogue , awesome and better pictures in The Road Less Traveled ,   Conde Nast Traveler , AFAR Highlights , the SmartFlyer , and even Curbed .

From National Geographic, if you subscribe to that .  This is a great article of all the top Atacama highlights from Bloomberg .

To get to the Atacama, you take a quick flight from Santiago to Calama, then it’s about 98kms to the town of San Pedro de Atacama , which is the base for almost all the hotels and outfitters.

Here’s a great guide on the Atacama and San Pedro from the UK Conde Nast Traveller . And another three great articles from CNT, including traveling solo to Atacama . And here’s a great guide from Departures magazine .And a brief article on self-driving in the Atacama on Suitcase magazine .  Here’s a great description by the US Conde Nast Traveler of great the experience at the all-inclusive hotels and how effortless it is to go exploring every day.  God, every places I’ve been Vogue has already been there. Great article .

You can book your travel through Knowmad Adventures, the top South American adventure travel company.  Here’s a great article on the award winning Tierra Hotels, voted as reader favorite .
