What to expect on a tour of the USA’s Deep South – Titan Travel

' src=

The Deep South. What comes to mind when you think of the USA’s southernmost states? Is it the distinctive southern drawl accent, or perhaps the reputation for its warm and friendly southern hospitality? Maybe you’ve been transported there from a literary perspective – ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘Streetcar Named Desire’, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, ‘The Help’ (the list goes on) are all famously set in USA’s Southern States.

For most though, its music, and its deep-seated roots to some of the most influential music artists and genres worldwide, such as Memphis for its Rock n Roll and blues, and Nashville, famed for its country music. Without a doubt, music is the beating heart of the Deep South, but there is so much more to the Southern States than just music. Titan’s Southern Sights and Sounds tour delves into just that. So, what can you expect from a tour of the USA’s Deep South?

A Deep South tour ensures an eclectic mix of experiences. It has powerful music, important history, authentic culture, diverse food, and wonderful people – but most importantly you’ll discover little things on this trip that instil an overwhelming perspective you wouldn’t find anywhere else.

Be moved by history

Your first stop on your Southern Sights and Sounds tour is Georgia’s capital Atlanta – a beautiful green city home to a diverse and thriving cultural scene and the centre of the USA’s past and present civil rights movement. As you tour this cosmopolitan city, you’ll be surprised at how grand the houses (or should I say mansions) are. Discover influential historical sites including the Martin Luther King National Historic Site, which boasts a huge mural illustrating Martin Luther King’s contributions and impact – this will undoubtedly leave a powerful impression on you. There’ll be time to enjoy a stroll through the Centennial Olympic Park too – another part of history that’s been left behind in Atlanta.

Chattanooga – a town in Tennessee with a name that rolls off the tongue and with the largest old-time railroad in the south. The incline railway which has just celebrated 125 years is one not to miss – the steep journey to the top will absolutely be worth it, with views of the town and the surroundings to take a quick photo of.

Whether you’re a fan of whiskey or not, the tour of the Jack Daniels Distillery provides a unique story of the founder. The history of Jasper Newton Daniel’s aka Jack’s, early life is somewhat unclear – including when he was born! But the success of Jack Daniels’s whiskey-making journey has become an American and worldwide legend. As you’re guided through the distillery, learning about Jack, the distillery and how prohibition played a part in the whiskey’s history, you’re met big, impressive machines and quickly greeted with an amazing strong aroma of the signature charcoal-mellowed whisky as its being made – if you weren’t a fan before, you may be tempted to try again.

Musical Roots

“A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It’s my favourite part of the business – live concerts. – Elvis Presley 1973. ”

The Deep South is well known for its music – a large amount of which has been recorded in the RCA Studio B in Nashville, with around 45,000 songs recorded there. When you visit Studio B on the tour, you’ll be retracing the footsteps of legendary musicians like Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, and Dolly Parton, among others. This promises to be a unique experience – one that will leave you buzzing with excitement as it was in this very place where their iconic songs were created.

From recorded music to live music – The Grand Ole Opry is America’s longest-running radio show, with weekly performances of country, folk and other similar music. Nashville is considered the country music capital of the world, making The Grand Ole Opry the mother church of country music. Its hosted performances from icons such as Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Elvis to contemporary musicians such as Carrie Underwood, Dustin Lynch, and Luke Combs. Finish your evening and your stay in Nashville, on a high, as you take a seat at the show – the atmosphere will no doubt be exhilarating and will exceed your expectations.

“Then I’m walking in Memphis, was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale – Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn. ”

Memphis is often associated with where Elvis is from, and whilst he did live there for most of his life, his birthplace was in fact Tupelo, Mississippi. You’ll get to spend a bit of time exploring his small childhood home before heading to the birthplace of Rock’n’Roll – Memphis. On the day you arrive, discover the key sights on an included tour, making mental notes on what authentic music bars to come back to that evening, and the places you want to independently visit the next day during your afternoon of free time. As you wander past the illuminated signs of Beale Street, spot some big-name venues like BB Kings Blues Club and Honky Tonk, as well as the Memphis Music Hall of Fame Museum.

And of course, a trip to Memphis wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Graceland – Elvis’s home. As you’re guided through room by room, listening to story after story of his life and career, soak up all of Elvis’s home, his memorabilia, and the Automobile Museum, where his grand aeroplanes are kept. Whether you are an Elvis fan or not, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and taken aback by your trip to Graceland and Elvis himself.

Mardi Gras, Creole food, and swamps

New Orleans is soulful, lively, and has a joyful atmosphere that’s infectious. When it’s not throwing parties and hosting the famous Mardi Gras parade, the popular French Quarter has something going on everywhere you look. As you stroll down Bourbon Street in the heart of the Quarter, you’ll find musicians playing jazz on every corner enticing you to tap your feet to the tunes. Artists are lined up along the streets absorbed in their current masterpiece – their faces dusted with their medium of choice as their finished works are on hanging on display. Come evening, the bright neon lights illuminate the sky as you’re entertained with yet more live music poured onto the street. Maybe this time you let your feet move and dance to the rhythm! After all the motto of New Orleans is ‘laissez les bon temps rouler!’ – ‘Let the good times roll!’ And after your three nights here you will certainly assent to that.

Swap the streets of people for a trip through swamps of alligators. Shielded from the sun under shade in your boat, explore the 100-year-old swamps in their original natural state, as you quietly and carefully glide by the alligators, snakes, and birds.

After your day of exploring or maybe dancing, you will no doubt build up an appetite, so why not take advantage of local authentic dishes? There’s no better way to experience the diversity of cultures than from the food itself. The official food of the State of Louisiana is gumbo, with the cuisine of New Orleans heavily influenced by Creole cuisine and Cajun cuisine. To experience the unique differences between Cajun and Creole food, head to a restaurant in New Orleans. One key distinction is that Creole dishes usually contain tomato-based sauces, while traditional Cajun cuisine does not. But there’s much more to the story, rooted in the history of the city. Then you have the muffuletta – a famous Italian sandwich invented in New Orleans with cured meats, cheese, olive dressing and fantastic bread – what’s not to love?

There’s so much to do, hear and taste, Titan have made sure you have enough free time to cram in as much as possible. An optional excursion to cruise, dine and enjoy a live jazz band aboard The Natchez Steamboat is highly recommended – what better way to soak in the culture and even more music, as its huge paddlewheel takes you along the Mississippi River.

Introducing Titan Travel

Titan will never compromise on quality. We continue to make every effort to ensure that, when you travel with us, you enjoy the holiday of a lifetime, every time. Every individual aspect of your holiday has been carefully considered to deliver the best ratio of quality and value, provide complete peace of mind and yet still satisfy the most adventurous travel spirit. The expert planning, choice of hotels and transportation methods, included excursions and the services of an expert Titan tour manager can really enhance your appreciation of a destination and transform an ordinary holiday into a truly inspiring one.

Many escorted holidays sold by British tour operators originate in the destination and are aimed at the international market, with multilingual commentaries, sweepingly general itineraries and local contracted hotels and tour managers. Titan holidays are different. They are expertly crafted in-house and are only on sale in the UK; our well-travelled product specialists know their destinations inside out and select the best hotels, airlines, trains and cruise vessels. Properly balanced itineraries, most unique to us, are designed to include excursions and visits of particular interest to British travelers as well as a number of free days when there is always a choice of relaxation or enjoyable things to do. And, in the majority of cases, Titan holidays are escorted by the best tour managers in the business.

Exceptional Value

Quality often comes with a price tag and, indeed, Titan has never striven to be the cheapest tour operator. What you get with us though is unparalleled value for money, with a host of inclusions as standard and a range of exclusive offers and discounts.

Traveling in style With Titan, not only does your holiday begin and end at your front door, it also includes scheduled international flights with world-renowned airlines and the most memorable form of touring transport. Where this is a coach, we look to provide the best available, with air-conditioning, w/c and daily seat rotation in the interests of fairness. But escorted tours are not simply limited to coaches. Titan is one of the UK’s leading rail specialists and a number of our holidays incorporate journeys on iconic trains, that seem to transport you not only through some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the world, but also back in time to a nostalgic ‘golden age’ of luxurious and stylish travel.

If you are undecided between the elegance and relaxation of a cruise and the enthralling insight of an escorted tour, Titan’s Cruise & Tour® holidays could be a perfect choice. You can cruise with some of the most respected names in the industry, including Fred.Olsen and Holland America, around regions of awe-inspiring beauty and head ashore for an extra land-based touring element. Alternatively, the waterways of Europe, Egypt and China link the most spectacular cultural gems in picturesque fashion and a river cruise is an outstanding way to appreciate wonderful destinations from a different and more relaxed perspective. Our river cruise partners include Uniworld, multi award-winning operator of 5★ boutique river cruises.

Included Excursions We don’t believe that our holidaymakers should pay extra for optional excursions to experience what are obviously the most important attractions of a country or region. You get much better value if they are included from the start. Unless otherwise stated, every visit mentioned in the tour itinerary is included in the cost of your holiday.

Quality named hotels and lodges Hotels on Titan holidays are much more than simply a place to sleep at the end of the day. They may place you at the heart of a thrilling city or in a retreat of sublime tranquillity; reflect the character and heritage of a destination or play an integral part in its social scene; present inspiring views or a range of exhilarating experiences. Location and quality are key considerations. At Titan, we always seek to provide the best of both choosing a lower priced holiday based on lower quality, more remote hotels can often be a false economy in the time and money you end up wasting during your stay.

Low or No Single Supplements

We are always looking at ways of minimizing or eliminating our single supplements. A number of tours featured on this website have low or no single supplements to pay.

The UK's best holiday price promise

It has always been a Titan principle that the earlier you book, the lower the price you pay. Our holiday price promise provides complete peace of mind – if we subsequently reduce the price to below what you have already paid (after any discounts have been applied), we will contact you to refund the difference†!

This guarantee applies to tour prices only (excluding all Traveller, by Titan holidays and any selected loyalty rewards we may offer to past travelers from time to time) and does not include airline upgrades, holiday additions, extended stays or regional connecting flights and selected special offer products.

Sights and Sounds of the Deep South

Comprehensive tour covering five states.2000 miles in two weeks. All the favourites:including Nashville and The Grand Ole Opry,Memphis and Graceland and a jazz cruise on a paddle steamer on the Mississippi. Some very nice touches like door to door limousine service and a good range of hotels. Sadly the holiday, for us,was not an unmitigated success;and this in part was what appeared to be unnecessary cost cutting.A visit to the CNN building in Atlanta where we had a 2hour stopover, ostensibly to get some lunch. Our guide informed us the optional tour of the CNN newsroom wasn't really worth taking and it would be a rush to also buy lunch. The visit to the Jack Daniels distillary was a popular inclusion. However our guide made several references to our tour being a 'Dry tour'inferring there could be no sampling of the bourbon as it was a dry county. When we arrived it was to find that not only were sampling tours available,we'd all been booked in for the dry version because it was cheaper. We were also very disappointed with our guide who,we felt, merely went through the motions.Quite lacklustre. When I emailed Titan about our sense of disappointment with what we thought were missed opportunities we were given a standard reply which totally ignored the issues we raised. And also told us that the guides, were not really guides. On balance therefore we would not travel with Titan again and would not really feel comfortable in recommending them.Felt it was too much of a cost cutting outfit.

We have just come back from a wonderful 10 day tour of Cuba with Titan travel. We stayed in Havana for 3 nights and then travelled to 3 different regions in Cuba. Our tour manager was very helpful and we had a great knowledgeable local guide. There were 28 of us on our tour and we travelled by coach with our own driver. Cuban culture is very different to the UK and the people are struggling with shortages caused by the sanctions so you do need to take a laid back attitude. The highlights included a trip round Havana in a classic car, a visit to a tobacco growers farm, a boat trip on an underground river plus many others. Top tips: Soap was in short supply when we were there and we took some to leave as part of a tip for our maid. Be prepared to leave tips for everyone from toilet attendants to the musicians playing in the restaurants. The people rely on these to supplement their income so do tip. Tourists have to buy a different currency : CUC. These have to be bought in Cuba and any left has to be exchanged at the airport before you leave. Once you go through security to go home they can’t be used. We had to wait about an hour to change our money so be prepared. A lovely holiday with friends to celebrate significant birthdays.

titan travel deep south

It was our 45th wedding anniversary and we had saved up, spent more than we would have in the past, were really impressed with literature. The driver was not sure which terminal he was taking us to and on returning headed back to Heathrow instead of to our home. On board the boat we had to source our cutlery and napkins, I found plastic in my sweet. I don't think restaurant staff were trained properly, no one person dedicated to a range of tables, everyone rushing about disorganised. I did expect more, as Titan did not deliver what the literature portrayed, it did fall short and we did get a loss of value. So disappointed as I expected more.

This was a disappointing tour as Titan did not live up to reputation. Cities with not much to see and a very rushed program/ lots of travelling and no meals included which made it very expensive. Supposed to be 3/4 star hotels but one where we stayed was about youth hostel grade and not very clean also on the edge of town in Jasper- restaurant was closed so had to find food elsewhere. This was a very expensive holiday and if you wanted to see any of the local places they were extras on the tour. Have been with Titan twice before but to me they are cutting to many corners and it certainly wasn’t value for money. Would never go with them again.

Pros: Door to Door service makes for a relaxing holiday. Staff are friendly, attentive and generally excellent. Menus were varied, the food well presented and there was more than enough to eat. Trips were well organised and allowances made for the less agile group members. Cons: Flights are with BA so were predictably delayed (over 5 hours on the return flight). River is infested with tour boats so view from cabin is invariably into another boat's cabin. Cruise was not fully booked but the staff barely coped at meal times.

Miggie Cheng+driver Brian couldn't have done a better job. After a flight from Newcastle to Heathrow, believe me, LA is a terrible airport to have to go through. Never been to one more disorganised in my life having flown since 1973. No thought at all for passengers, they're sent here, there+everywhere, more often than not to the wrong places. We were told as we were premium travel we didn't need to go through the passport+fingerprint machines, which was a load of rubbish, so were separated from our group. It's about time something was done bout such poor service - jet lag is bad enough without having to go through this during 4 flights lasting 24hrs total one after the other. Please for your customers sake find another way to go.

Titan Travel launch new video to promote Southern Sights & Sounds Tour

Deep South USA Blog

The 5-minute video is from one of their tours earlier this year and showcases some holiday highlights from our region with Titan travellers and local tour guides.

Titan Travel Southern Sights and Sounds

Come away with us to the Deep South, the land that gave birth to the Blues, Jazz and Rock‘n’Roll. Picture yourself there now, a chilled mint julep in your hand as you watch Ol’ Man River rollin’ along, the strains of a sweet Dixieland melody swelling and drifting off into the warm, magnolia-perfumed air. A musical feast awaits on our Southern Sights and Sounds tour, and this special five-minute film recorded on one of our April departures gives you a wonderful taste. Featuring just a few of the holiday highlights, it also includes interviews with genuine Titan travellers, tour managers and local guides.

There is simply no better value tour of this enthralling region. Along the way, you’ll visit Nashville, home of the Grand Ole Opry, Elvis Presley’s modest birthplace in Tupelo and Graceland, his legendary Memphis home. Join us as we ride the vertiginous Incline Railway up Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, experience the electric atmosphere of New Orleans and dance the evening away to a live jazz band as you cruise the Mississippi aboard a traditional paddle-steamer. And, as always with Titan, our VIP Home Departure Service means your holiday begins the moment you close your front door.

Day 1 UK to Atlanta

After all the anticipation, your holiday starts today! Maybe you’ll treat yourself to a celebratory drink at the airport before your flight to Atlanta, Georgia. When you arrive, we’ll drive you to your hotel for an overnight stay and after time to freshen up, we’ll come together for our welcome drink

Day 2 Atlanta - Nashville

Atlanta is a dynamic city with a fascinating history. Founded in 1837 as a community at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad, it was virtually burnt to the ground during the US Civil War. Undeterred, the city rose from the ashes and became the centre of the Civil Rights movement in the 20th century. On this morning’s tour, you’ll discover its many highlights including the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Olympic Park and the impressive Georgia State Capitol building.

Later we'll drive to Nashville for a two night stay. On your free evening be sure to explore the city's Broadway and Honky Tonk Highway, a strip of venues where there is live music 365 days a year.

Day 3 Nashville

We have a fabulous music-themed day in store for you today. It begins as you step inside the hallowed halls of Studio B, which has been dubbed the ‘birthplace of the Nashville Sound’, a popular style of country music. It was built in 1957 and over two decades, many hits were recorded here by artists including Elvis Presley. Standing in the very studio where he recorded ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ with the lights dimmed and his incredible voice flowing from the speakers, is sure to be a truly special moment. You’re also going to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, an incredible museum packed full of exhibits and music-themed memorabilia.

There's one more exciting experience to come if you choose to attend an optional evening of live music at the Grand Ole Opry. Take your seats for the world-famous show where some of today’s best artists celebrate the joy of country music.

Day 4 Memphis

The next great musical city you'll visit is Memphis, standing proudly on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. When we arrive this afternoon, we're going to set off together to discover some of its many highlights. They include the Riverfront, historic Cotton Row, and Beale Street, the home of the blues. On this iconic street, music emanates from every open door, and street performers entertain the crowds. You could perhaps head back here for a drink and dinner this evening.

Day 5 Memphis

Memphis is synonymous with Elvis Presley, and today we're going to find out about this connection. Our first visit is to Sun Studios, where the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' made his first recordings back in 1954.

This is followed by Graceland, where we'll take a fascinating guided tour of the opulent mansion that was his home from 1957 until his death in 1977. Here you can fully immerse yourself in his career and personal life, exploring the famous Jungle Room, living room, kitchen, TV room, pool room and other highlights. The tour ends at the Meditation Garden, where Elvis is buried alongside his parents. This is sure to be a wonderful highlight of your holiday, and you can round it off by enjoying dinner wherever you fancy in Memphis – ask your Holiday Director for recommendations if you wish.

Day 6 Memphis

Today has been left free for you to explore more of Memphis at leisure. Maybe you'll choose to visit the National Civil Rights Museum, located at the former Lorraine Motel. Dr Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at this very spot in April 1968 and the museum’s fascinating exhibits tell inspiring stories about the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. There are plenty of other options too, including the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

Alternatively, if you enjoyed your visit to Graceland yesterday, today's optional excursion is sure to be tempting. Why not come with us to Tupelo, to see the house where Elvis was born. You'll also get to visit a fantastic museum displaying one of the most remarkable collections of Elvis memorabilia in the world.

Day 7 Vicksburg

We’re going to take to the road today, leaving Memphis behind and crossing the border into Mississippi. We’ll travel through the Mississippi Delta, said to be the birthplace of the Delta Blues – a style of Blues music that developed in the early 20th century. Making a stop in the small town of Indianola, we’ll visit the BB King Museum to learn about the life and music of the legendary ‘King of the Blues’.

After time for lunch, our journey will continue to Vicksburg.

Day 8 Natchez - New Orleans

As we head deeper south, we're going to make a stop in Natchez, a historic town on the banks of the Mississippi River. This laid-back destination is filled with grand mansions and we’ll visit one today to learn about southern life in the antebellum period, before the Civil War. We’ll admire the stunning architecture of this palatial home and see some of the antiques it was originally furnished with.

Our ultimate destination today is the 'Big Easy', or New Orleans, home to another musical genre - jazz. When we arrive, a sightseeing tour will introduce us to many of the city’s highlights, including the stunning triple-steepled St Louis Cathedral, and cemeteries filled with unique, white-marble above-the-ground tombs.

Your hotel is located just steps from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter. It is the city’s vibrant heart and oldest district, and tonight you are free to make your own discoveries. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, so why not head out and see what’s on offer for dinner.

Day 9 New Orleans

You’re going to uncover the charm of the French Quarter and learn all about its history on a walking tour this morning. A Local Guide will lead us through the historic streets and point out highlights including Jackson Square, Pirate's Alley, and the world-famous Bourbon Street. The walk ends at a restaurant, where we’ll enjoy a buffet brunch accompanied by live jazz, in a pretty outdoor courtyard.

The rest of the day is yours to explore the galleries and boutiques of the French Quarter, or if you prefer, you could perhaps head to City Park and discover the Botanical Garden or the New Orleans Museum of Art. We also offer an optional swamp and bayou tour, where you’ll glide through the tranquil beauty of Louisiana’s waterways by boat, looking out for alligators, raccoons and more.

Day 10 New Orleans - at leisure

With so much to discover in New Orleans, you can spend the day exploring at your own pace. Perhaps take a stroll through the open-air French Market and shop for souvenirs to take home before stopping for coffee and beignets - French-style doughnuts - at the famous Café du Monde.

If you’re still keen to discover more, your Holiday Director is hosting an optional afternoon trip on an authentic paddle steamer. Once the only way to travel along the waterways of the South, this trip will take you on a glorious journey back to the 19th-century heyday of these iconic vessels. Sit back and listen to a live jazz band play as you sail along the mighty Mississippi taking in views of New Orleans from the water.

Day 11 New Orleans/UK

Your holiday comes to an end today, so make the most of your last few hours before we drive you to the airport in good time for your flight home.

After an overnight flight, you will arrive back in the UK today.

The ultimate usa deep south road trip itinerary.

The ultimate USA Deep South road trip itinerary

I still remember like it was yesterday. But it’s almost two years ago. During one of those typical winter dips, Jan and I decided that we wanted to spend our summer vacation in the United States. Immediately I started looking for plane tickets to all kinds of destinations from which to plan a road trip through the most epic national parks. Unfortunately, we had a limited budget and the prices of plane tickets quickly took off. One day I was home alone and found two very cheap plane tickets to Miami. I had been here before, but Jan not yet. Immediately I started to think of the many places in the south of the United States that were still on our bucket list. That is how the idea of a Deep South Road trip originated.

I quickly called Jan and asked if he was open to a total surprise. He gave me free rein and I booked the tickets. I quickly mapped out a first itinerary and in the evening I surprised him with the destination for our summer vacation. He was really happy! And a few months later we left on a Deep South Road trip.

Deep South USA

When I drove from New York City to Miami by car a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised by Southern States. Especially the beautiful nature, southern hospitality and the delicious and abundant food made my mouth water for more. The Deep South is an area with its own culture and history. And this is what appeals to me. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time to discover more then. So returning to this fascinating part of the United States was high on my bucket list.

How to get to the Deep South?

From Belgium it’s best to travel by plane to a destination that is on your Deep South road trip itinerary. First, check which destination is best accessible from your place of departure. Within the United States you can always opt for a domestic flight if necessary. We did it the other way around and first chose our flight destination Miami, because of our limited budget and then planned our road trip from here.

You can rent a car from any airport through various car rental companies. But it’s best to book online in advance. We rented a car from Enterprise car rental and were very satisfied with the service.

Another great way to do this Deep South road trip is by renting an RV. This is very popular in this area of the States, since the weather is so amazing here. So if you planning a stay in one of the best RV parks , be sure to book your stay in advance.

Best time to travel the Deep South?

The best time to travel to the Deep South in the US is from November to May. Then the temperatures are the most pleasant for road tripping. In the summer it’s tropically warm and very humid. And yes, we were there during July and can absolutely agree. Besides, it’s also hurricane season from June to November, which means that your trip can be somewhat affected. But all in all, the weather conditions didn’t really affect our road trip. On the contrary, the harsh thunderstorms sometimes provided the most impressive lightning bolts that lit up the whole sky. That was quite special to see. Definitely check the weather before you go and prepare well by packing the right things for your Florida vacation and road trip.

Our USA Deep South itinerary

Stop 1: Miami

We arrived at the Miami airport in the early evening.  There are plenty of ways to get from Miami airport to South beach , but we opted for a rental car.

After we picked up our rental car at Enterprise car rental we left for our stay the Hyde Midtown Miami hotel . IWe had exceptionally booked a hotel for the first two nights. It was just the weekend of July 4th, the US National Day, and we didn’t want to risk finding decent accommodation at a reasonable price. When in Miami you can also op to stay in one of the best Art Deco hotels to make your vacation a little more special.

When we arrived at the hotel we saw the sun set from the roof terrace. We decided to start our vacation with a tropical cocktail in the bar opposite the hotel.

The next day we went out early to discover all the highlights of Miami . We only had one day and I wanted to give Jan the ultimate Miami experience. We started downtown Miami in Wynwood with the Wynwood walls as the main attraction. There we admired the most impressive street art.

Wynwood Walls Miami

Then we went to South Beach where we ended up in an opposite world. From the layed back urban vibe in Wynwood to the unique culture on Ocean Drive where being seen is a real art. But this is exactly what makes Miami such a versatile destination. After a walk in the pastel-colored Art Deco district, we enjoyed happy hour on Ocean Drive. With a view of the sunset over Miami Beach we enjoyed a giant cocktail including a real parade of the most luxurious cars.

Ocean drive South Beach

Even though we were excited to expirience Miami nightlife after that cocktail, we decided wisely to go to sleep so that we could start our road trip without a headache the following day. Our next destination was Orlando with a stopover in the Everglades. Even though, if you don’t have a car it’s easy to get from Miami to Orlando by bus .

Stop 2: everglades.

The next day we were fresh and brisk to really start our Deep South road trip. After a fresh morning dip in the rooftop pool of the Hyde Midtown Miami hotel , we left for The Everglades.

Hyde Midtown Miami Hotel

Everyone knows that an airboat tour is the most fun way to admire the fauna and flora of the Everglades. I already had good memories of this from my previous Florida trip. With this thought I convinced Jan that an Everglades airboat tour should definitely not be missing on our Deep South road trip. After a little search on google, I found Jungle Erv’s Airboats that offered airboat tours through the mangrove. I hadn’t done this before and it sounded very promising.

Jungle Erv's airboats Everglades

An hour later we were on the airboat speeding through the mangrove. Unfortunately we couldn’t spot much wildlife. Our captain was an excellent boat driver, but as a guide he was rather quiet and we didn’t learn much about the mangroves of the Everglades. Afterwards we were invited to an alligator show where alligators were exhibited to the visitors. They were tied around their mouths so visitors could touch them. I could hardly hide my dislike.

Jungle Erv’s Airboats

Even though this airboat tour was a bit disappointing, I recommend that you definitely include one. But go for an organization that focuses more on the beautiful fauna and flora of the Everglades.

Joanie’s blue crab café, Everglades

A little disappointed we went looking for a place to have lunch. That’s how we ended up at Joanie’s blue crab café where you can enjoy local dishes in an authentic setting. Especially the delicious, refreshing key lime pie put me back in a cheerful mood. And good, because it was already time to continue our road trip to our next destination Orlando.

Stop 3: Universal studios Orlando

This was Jan’s day! As a digital artist within a theme park in Belgium, he had to visit a theme park at all costs. And where better than Orlando, the theme park paradise? His choice was quickly made. Universal Studios had been on his bucket list for a long time.

We bought our tickets online the night before. We left for the park an hour before opening time. When we arrived at Universal studios, everything went very smoothly. We followed the parking guide for Universal Studios Orlando by fellow travel bloggers ‘Inside our suitcase’. We quickly found a parking space and walked to the entrance without any problems. There we had to wait until opening time.

Universal studio’s Orlando

First we went to the beautiful themed wizarding world of Harry Potter, where we got to go on the first ride of the day on Harry Potter’s forbiden journey inside Hogwarts. This attraction was truly phenomenal. Then we strolled through the recreated village where you can find the best souvenir shops. Then we wanted to go on Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, unfortunately this attraction remained closed all day.

Universal studios Orlando

To be honest, I found the wizarding world of Harry Potter to be the most impressive part of the park. There are still a lot of cool attractions, but some parts of the park are a bit outdated. It was also very busy that day, so we had trouble finding a place to have lunch during the afternoon. But Jan thought it was a fantastic day and happy hubby, happy life? Isn’t it?

Universal studios Orlando

Orlando is of course known for it’s many theme parks, but this city has so much more to offer. There are so many fun things to do in Orlando .  Close to Orlando you can also find some of the most popular beaches in Florida such as Daytona beach. But the most beautiful one is definitely Cocoa beach .  So don’t forget to make time to explore more of Orlando and the coast during your road trip. You can find the  best Orlando Getyourguide deals below.

Stop 4: Herlong Mansion Micanopy

After a day of fun in Universal Studios, we went to the heart of Florida. I really wanted to visit the natural springs where I had already seen beautiful photos from on instagram. The Ginnie Springs were at the top of my list. So I started looking for a place to stay nearby. This way I found B&B the Herlong Mansion in Micanopy . Yes, we stayed in this beautiful, authentic mansion. Just like that one from “The Notebook” with those impressive oak trees in the front.

B&b Herlong Mansion Micanopy

When we arrived in Micanopy, I was immediately charmed by the small, sleeping town. By the way, The Herlong Mansion   fitted that picture perfectly. The entire house was decorated in Victorian style. That made our stay an experience in itself. We decided that day to just enjoy the beautiful mansion and take a walk through the mysterious town of Micanopy, which is also known for its many antique shops. This was the ideal place to relax and really enjoy the southern hospitality in a local setting.

Micanopy Florida

The nearest town is Gainsville about a 20 minutes drive from The Herlong Mansion. Definitely recommended if you prefer a more vibrant area to stay. In this student city you will find lots of pleasant bars and eateries.

Stop 5: ginnie springs.

Ginnie Springs Florida

After a short night at the Herlong Mansion , we woke up early to visit Ginnie Springs . We had heard that it could be very busy, so we wanted to be the first there at opening time. No sooner said than done, after an hour’s drive we were the first visitors of Ginnie Springs that day. We rented a tube and went to all sources on the domain to take pictures. Yes, that is also part of the job. And fortunately, because there were already a lot of visitors in the late morning.

After taking 1001 photos, we decided it was time to relax. On our couple tube we floated down the Santa Fé river while enjoying the beautiful nature, the blissful weather with an occasional refreshing dip. Definitely a top activity on our Deep South road trip.

Ginnie Springs Florida

Besides Ginnie Springs there is still a lot to do in Central Florida such as the impressive Ocala forest. There are many other beautiful springs in this region as well. You can even kayak with manatees in Florida ! Unfortunately we couldn’t stay longer and I regret that a bit now.

After our tube adventure, we spent another night in The Herlong Mansion . The next day we slept a little longer and started our day with a delicious mimosa breakfast. Then we left for Savannah.

B&b Herlong Mansion Micanopy

Before leaving Florida we paid a visit to a super cool retro diner in Jacksonville where we enjoyed a delicious Key Lime milkshake. If you want to stay a bit longer in Jacksonville be sure to check out Jacksonville beach which is one of Florida’s best beaches for surfing .

Stop 6: savannah.

Arriving in picturesque Savannah, we checked into the beautiful hotel The Alida . It was already noon so we went straight out. We walked along River Street, one of the best things to do in Savannah . And enjoyed the hustle and bustle here. The historic setting of old industrial warehouses along the river, now transformed into local boutiques, immediately brought me back to my first visit to Savannah years ago. I really love this town. The best things was that this time I could share this visit with Jan. Savannah is definitely one of the most romantic places in the USA.

Savannah River Street

It was very hot so we decided to go back to The Alida for a refreshing dip in the pool. That evening we enjoyed the delicious Southern cuisine with a culinary twist at Rhett. This restaurant is located on the ground floor of The Alida   and is highly recommended. For a nightcap we went to the amazing rooftop bar The Lost Square on the roof of The Alida . From here you have a magical view of Savannah!

The Alida Savannah

The next morning we took a walk to Forsyth park. One of the many amazing historical sites in Savannah . Even though it was still early, there were already quite a few visitors in the park. The dazzling, centrally located fountain attracts not only many admirers, but also many artists who want to immortalize this image on the canvas. Around the park you will also find numerous beautiful houses built during the Victorian era.

Forsyth Park Savannah

Then we drove on to Wormsloe plantation, known for its long, dreamy driveway between two rows of impressive ancient oak trees. And its reputation certainly lives up to it. The ruins of the plantation house were less impressive, but you can take beautiful walks on the domain. This is definiteley one of t he most romantic things to do in Savannah .

Wormsloe plantation Savannah

After a hearty lunch in the diner on Abercorn, an authentic diner from the 50ties, we left for our next stop. Too bad we ran out of time to discover more of Savannah.

Stop 7: charleston.

We arrived in Charleston early in the evening and had only a few hours to discover this town. We lost a lot of time because of our visit to Wormsloe plantation. And because we had just a few hours we decided to just walk as much as possible.

We passed the famous Rainbow Row, a row of historic houses in all colors of the rainbow. Then we walked along the coast through the beautiful waterfront Park and finally ended at the city market where we found numerous stalls with local products and nice souvenirs.

Rainbow Row Charleston

At that point we were so tired that we decided to go to sleep. Our plan was to leave early the next day and drive all the way to New Orleans. So we hadn’t really been able to experience Charleston as we initially planned. Unfortunately, you have to make choices every now and then while traveling. Despite our short visit, we found Charleston to be a very nice and pleasant city. Definitely the place to be for a romantic getaway on the East Coast .

Driving day: Charleston – New Orleans

With an 11-hour drive ahead of us, we woke up early again. We didn’t have time for breakfast. We hopped into the car towards New Orleans and decided to have lunch in Atlanta. In the meantime, we had made it our mission to find nice American diners while driving. In Atlanta we stopped at OK Cafe. We were a bit shocked when we saw a line of people queuing to eat there, but that means it had to be good! We decided to join the queue and after 20 minutes we sat at a table, feasting on a delicious sandwich.

Ok Café Atlanta

I do regret not staying a bit longer to discover Atlanta . I heard such great things about this city. But we were on a tight schedule. When we left Atlanta the weather became more and more turbulent. Hurricane Barry had just crossed New Orleans. And we had to pay the price along the way. Many heavy rain showers followed each other, which resulted in a lot of delay. We arrived in New Orleans very late. Fortunately, we were very well received by Hotel Indigo Nola Garden District .

Where to stay in New Orleans’ Garden District – Hotel Indigo

Stop 8: new orleans.

Hotel indigo Garden District New Orleans

I had been looking forward to this for so long! Finally I was in bustling New Orleans . Maybe a little less vibrant now since Hurricane Barry had just passed. After a delicious breakfast in bed at hotel Indoga Nola Garden District we went straight out to explore the streets of the French Quarter. I admired the beautiful architecture, a mix of American and Creole town houses and cottages. After a walk it was time for a coffee break at Cafe du Monde. Of course when you’re there you have to taste a typical, local beignet. Delicious btw!

French Quarter New Orleans

In the afternoon we decided to return to hotel Indigo   to further explore the Garden District from there. Once again we saw real architectural gems. In the evening we ventured into the nightlife of New Orleans. For this we wisely hired an uber. We were introduced to the famous drink “the hand grenate” on Bourbon Street and enjoyed a musical dance evening.

Garden District Nola

The day after, we decided to take a day trip from New Orleans to get to know the surrounding Louisiana countryside better. In the morning we took a swamp tour with Cayun Encounters. In contrast to our Everglades airboat tour, we could spot a lot of wildlife here. The guide was also able to tell a lot about this region, but also his personal experiences with Hurricane Katrina. This tour is highly recommended!

Cayun Encounters Louisiana

In the afternoon we visited Oak Alley Plantation where we got a better insight of life on a sugar cane plantation during the early 19th century. Very interesting was that you gained insight into the perspective of the masters and the slaves. Besides that Oak Alley Plantation is a very beautiful domain to visit.

Driving day: new orleans – sanibel eiland.

After two days it was time to say goodbye to New Orleans. I would have liked to spend a little more time here as well. That day we returned to Florida. We decided to take one full day to drive to Sanibel Island. It was a long drive and we decided to have dinner at Joes New York diner in Tampa in the evening to keep our diner tradition alive.

Joes New York Diner Tampa

We didn’t really have the time to explore more of Tampa. But if you’re in the neighborhood you should definitely plan a visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium . I’ve heard so many great things about it. So that’s definitely on my bucket list for when I visit Florida again.

The further south we moved, the more turbulent the weather became again. At sunset we were treated to a tropical storm with the most impressive lightning bolts.

Stop 9 Sanibel eiland

The next morning we woke up on the beautiful island of Sanibel, where we would spend three days. There are so many cool things to do on Sanibel, but we mostly wanted to relax after this eventful road trip. That’s why we had chosen Sanibel Island as our last destination. First of all  because it is much more peaceful than in other coastal towns and secondly because this island has some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida .  The following days we did nothing but go from beach to beach. That’s how we discovered the most beautiful beaches on Sanibel Island .

Turner beach Captiva

Very strange that we could quickly switch our rhythm from a busy road trip to the peaceful vibe of the island. We were now completely relaxed to travel back home.

Stop 10 miami.

Since we had an early morning flight, we decided to spend the night in Miami one more time. So we spent the last afternoon of our trip on South Beach.

South Beach Miami

But we obviously didn’t do this without visiting the 11th Street diner first.

11st Street Diner South Beach

You can imagine that during this trip I gained some weight. But it was totally worth it!

11st Street Diner South Beach

After a short night we left for the airport where we said goodbye to our trusty rental car that had guided us safely through all weather conditions.

Where to stay during a Deep South road trip?

Because we don’t want to be limited during a road trip, we usually don’t book stays in advance. If we want to stay longer in one destination, or have to skip another due to time constraints, we can do this without having to worry about canceling a stay.

That’s why we use the booking.com app. Very useful is that you can make last minute reservations for the same day. You immediately see which hotels are still available. And the reservation literally takes just one minute.

If you would like to book your stay in advance, you can use the booking.com app as well. But check till when you can cancel your reservation free of charge. If you want to adjust your travel schedule, you still can before that expire date.

Below you can find the direct links via booking.com to all the locations we visited on our Deep South road trip.

Miami downtown Miami Beach Everglades Orlando Micanopy Gainesville High Springs Jacksonville Savannah Charleston New Orleans Baton Rouge Tampa Sanibel Captiva Fort Myers beach

Extend your road trip

If we had more time for this Deep South road trip, we would first of all travel a bit slower and definitely spend more time in the Everglades, Central Florida, Savannah and Charleston. Secondly I would also add a few more destinations. Key West , the Great Smokey Mountains, Nashville and Memphis are still on my bucket list. These destinations are also perfect to add to this Deep South road trip itinerary. Or you can even extend you trip with a couple of destinations on the West Coast and make it a East Coast – West Coast road trip .

Our Deep South road trip was a really great experience. The variation between big, vibrant cities and picturesque towns, beautiful nature ranging from tropical beaches to the most magical forests with natural springs, fun day trips alternating with cultural activities and last but not least fhe delicious southern cuisine, made this one of the most memorable trips ever.

Would be a Deep South road trip be something you would like to do? Let me know in the comments below.

What a wonderful trip. Wow. The older I get, the more I love lingering at each stop. I’d love to take a month to do what you did. A girl can dream, right?

I know! I wish we had more time to do this trip as well. It was a bit rushed, but so happy I saw a bit more of the South. I hope I can return soon to explore more 😉

What a great road trip! So many wonderful cities to visit in the south!

Indeed, we loved every place we’ve visited and hope we can return one day to spend a bit more time on every location.

So much to see on a Southern road and so many delicious things to eat! Florida is a whole different animal, so I’m glad you enjoyed it!

I know right! Especially the food! 🙂

I love a good road trip! This looks so dope as I never considered Miami to be a road trip spot, esp to start!

Haha, me neighter, but that was our only option if we wanted to fly cheap. In the end it was one of my best road trips ever.

A 21-Day Road-Trip Itinerary Around the Deep South

An old wooden building beside a river in the American South

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in all my travels around America, it’s that the US is more like a collection of small countries than one cohesive cultural unit. The lifestyle, language, and norms of each region differ vastly from one another. And even within states, there are vast differences.

The region that surprised me the most was “the South,” defined as the states that were part of the Confederacy, from the Mason-Dixon line to the Mississippi River and down to the Gulf of Mexico. (Texas was part of the Confederacy, too, but it’s generally not considered part of the “Old South,” because, well, it’s Texas and it’s its own beast!)

Growing up as a northerner, I always kind of looked down on the region as “backwards,” but after a few trips around the area , I found that my perceptions about the region were wrong.

I grew to love my time exploring that part of the country. Sure, the South has its problems, but it has a lot more diversity, history, and natural beauty than my preconceived prejudices had allowed.

This region has a ton of parks, lakes, rivers, historical sites, and other interesting places to see. You’d need more than three weeks to properly see it but the deep south itinerary below gives you an overview:

Note : There are many, many, many potential routes you can take through this region. This three-week version is just some highlights I like. Tailor the route to your needs as you please!

Table of Contents

Days 1–3: New Orleans

Days 4–7: mississippi & alabama gulf coast, days 8–9: birmingham, days 10–12: nashville, day 13: franklin, days 14–16: memphis, day 17: oxford, day 18: vicksburg, days 19–20: natchez, day 21: return to new orleans.

A live band playing music outside in New Orleans

But we only have a few days, so here are some suggestions to help you get started:

  • Party on Bourbon Street – This probably goes without saying, but do check out Bourbon Street. Sure, it’s touristy, but it’s also exciting and home to lots of buskers, live music, and parades. It’s the beating heart of the city.
  • Wander the Garden District and French Quarter – These are two of the most popular and historic districts. Spend some time strolling around, taking in the mansions and old French buildings, either on your own or with a guided walking tour (there are tons to choose from).
  • Visit the National World War II Museum – This is the largest museum dedicated to the war in the United States — and it’s one of the best museums in the world. Its use of audio, video, artifacts, and personal stories ties the history of the war together in incredible detail. Listening to firsthand accounts makes it all feel that much more intimate and impactful. Adult admission is $35 USD.
  • Go on a voodoo or ghost tour – NOLA has something of a creepy past, and the best way to learn about it is by taking a voodoo or ghost tour . You’ll get to visit cemeteries, explore haunted buildings, and hear all sorts of unsettling anecdotes and ghostly tales.
  • Listen to live music on Frenchmen Street – Take in some live music (any night of the week) on this energetic street, the second most popular after Bourbon Street. It has lots of places to listen to blues and jazz; my favorite is the Spotted Cat.

For more things to see and do in NOLA, check out this detailed itinerary .

New Orleans is also an amazing foodie city. Some of my favorite places to indulge at are: Lilly’s Café, Bearcat, Welty’s Deli, Killer PoBoys, Jewel of the South, Acme Oyster House, and Willa Jean.

WHERE TO STAY

  • HI New Orleans – This is one of the best hostels in the world and my favorite in New Orleans.
  • Auberge NOLA – This hostel hosts nightly parties and events, so it’s super easy to meet people.
  • India House Backpackers Hostel – Another wild party hostel, with a swimming pool and live music venue.

A massive aircraft carrier docked near Mobile, Alabama

Start with a visit to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. It’s a small town with gorgeous white-sand beaches and lots of outdoor activities (such as fishing, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking). The downtown has lots of little shops and galleries as well.

Next, head to Mobile, Alabama. Visit Fort Condé (built by the French in 1723) and take a tour of the USS Alabama (a World War II vessel docked in Battleship Memorial Park). Make sure to also visit the Carnival Museum (dedicated to Mardi Gras) to learn more about the parade and its cultural significance.

From here, cruise toward Gulf Shores, Alabama, where you’ll find miles of beaches and gorgeous subtropical weather as you soak in the views of the Gulf of Mexico. There are also lots of hotels, resorts, and casinos if you feel like splurging. It’s tacky but fun.

Nearby, you’ll also find Gulf State Park, which spans 6,500 acres and offers beaches, hiking trails, fishing, golf, zip-lining, and sand dunes you can climb (parking rates vary depending on what section of the park you visit).

WHERE TO STAY There aren’t any hostels in this region, so your best bet is Airbnb or using Booking.com to find a cheap motel (or hotel if you feel like splurging!)

The skyline of Birmingham, Alabama at sunset

Then spend two nights in Birmingham. It grew to prominence as an industrial hub, relying mostly on nonunionized immigrant workers to undercut production in the northern US. In the 1950s and ’60s, it became a focus for the civil rights movement, and it was here, in 1962, where Dr. King wrote the famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

Here are few things to see and do while in Birmingham:

  • Learn at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – Opened in 1992, this museum highlights the struggles of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and ’60s. It sheds important light on how the movement impacted the region and changed the direction of the entire country — and the world. Adult admission is $15 USD.
  • Explore the Pepper Place Saturday Market – This farmers’ market is a great place to pick up local foods and artisan souvenirs. There’s also often live music, cooking demonstrations, and other activities on weekends (Saturday 7am-12pm).
  • Visit the Southern Museum of Flight – This aviation museum has over a hundred airplanes, as well models, engines, artwork, and photographs. The museum even has a Wright Flyer, one of the first planes developed by the Wright brothers, as well as some experimental prototypes that never took off (pun intended). It’s a great place to visit with kids especially. Admission is $10 USD.
  • Go hiking or biking – Spanning over a thousand acres, Ruffner Mountain Reserve (a mountain range once mined for iron ore) has all sorts of short hikes. Most are under two miles and range in difficulty from easy to hard. If you’d rather mountain-bike, check out Oak Mountain Park nearby, which has 50 miles of biking trails.
  • See the Birmingham Botanical Gardens – For a place to relax and go for a walk, head to the Botanical Gardens. It has over 12,000 plants, 25 different gardens, dozens of sculptures, and several miles of walking paths. Best of all, it’s free!

For a list of other important civil rights sites in the region, check out the Civil Rights Trail . It’s a comprehensive database of such sites around the entire country and has tons of helpful information and resources.

WHERE TO STAY There aren’t any hostels in Birmingham, so use Airbnb or Booking.com to find your cheapest options.

The bright lights of downtown Nashville, Tennessee at night

Here are some things to see and do in Nashville:

  • Visit the Tennessee State Museum – Opened in 2018, this museum goes into great detail about the state’s history. It has exhibitions on First Peoples, natural history, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. Admission is free.
  • Enjoy live music at the Grand Ole Opry – Opened in 1925, this is the most famous country music venue in the world. Regular live performances, TV broadcasts, and radio shows are held here. Tickets for live performances start at $53 USD per person.
  • Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum – With over 2.5 million items (including records, instruments, photographs, etc.), the de facto home of this brand of American music is one of the biggest museums anywhere dedicated to the genre. Museum admission is $29.95 USD.
  • See the Parthenon – Built in 1897, this is a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. It was built to celebrate the city’s hundredth anniversary and was chosen because Nashville is called “the Athens of the South” (due to its focus on higher education). Admission is $10 USD.
  • Listen to music on Broadway – If you’re still craving live music, head to Broadway, the city’s main thoroughfare, where you’ll find all kinds of bars and live music venues. Best of all, there’s usually no cover, so you can bar-hop and enjoy as much music as you want.
  • Bode – This is perfect for budget travelers who want a central location. The hotel has really comfortable rooms and a retro in-house café where you can relax with a coffee.

The charming downtown of Franklin, TN at sunset

To be fair, I didn’t expect much when I first visited, but Franklin really over-delivered. If you’re a foodie or a fan of live music, a stop here is a must!

Here are a few things to see and do while you’re here:

  • Attend the Pilgrimage Music Festival – This massive annual festival brings many world-class musicians to Franklin. Usually held in September, it combines big-name bands with small-town charm. Don’t miss it!
  • Explore the Master & Makers Trail – This tourist trail takes you to the region’s breweries, wineries, and distilleries. You’ll get to sample the best Franklin has to offer while learning a bit about how each drink is made.
  • Learn about the Civil War – The Battle of Franklin was fought here in 1864. Visit the Lotz House Civil War Museum to learn more (you can even still visit an old building with original Civil War bullet holes!). Admission is by tour only. There’s a guided house tour is $14 USD, or you can choose from various specialty tours ($25 USD), such as a battlefield tour, women’s history tour, or ghost tour.

WHERE TO STAY Since Franklin is quite small, Airbnb is your best option here.

The large Memphis sign in Memphis, TN

  • Visit the National Civil Rights Museum – Housed in the former motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, this museum explores the civil rights movement from the 17th century to today, its struggles, and the impact it’s had on the country. It is powerful and poignant and one of the best museums in the country. Don’t miss it! Admission is $20 USD.
  • Tour Sun Studios – This is the studio where Elvis got his start. You can take a tour and learn about the King’s origins and how his humble roots eventually led to over a billion records sold. Many other famous musicians also recorded here, such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins. Admission is $20 USD.
  • Wander Beale Street – Known as “America’s Most Iconic Street,” this is where you’ll find Memphis’s best live music. There are numerous bars hosting live performances, as well as street buskers.
  • Enjoy the Rock ’n’ Soul Museum – Located on iconic Beale Street, this museum highlights the pioneers and contributions of blues, rock, and soul musicians from the 1930s to the 1970s. There are costumes and recordings from some of the most famous soul musicians, interactive media, and exhibitions on famous performers from Memphis. Admission is $14 USD.
  • See Graceland – Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, is located a few miles south of the city. Even if you’re not a diehard Elvis fan, it’s worth a visit to see just how impactful his life and music has been. You’ll see all kinds of lookalikes and fans while also learning about his life and contributions to the music industry. Admission isn’t cheap though – tours of the mansion start at $82 USD.

Memphis is also another awesome foodie city (see a pattern here?). Some of my favorite places to eat are: Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, Central BBQ, Loflin Yard, Bounty on Broad, and the Rendezvous (a delicious BBQ place).

  • Hostel Memphis – With free breakfast, a shared kitchen, and plenty of common space, this hostel has everything you’ll need!

A historic brick building in Oxford, USA

The town is really small, though, and there are only a couple of things to do here:

  • Visit the historic downtown – Downtown you’ll find a charming market square surrounded by lots of restaurants, art galleries, and local shops. It’s a nice place to stroll. For a bite to eat, head to City Grocery, a fine-dining Southern restaurant in a historic two-story brick building.
  • Tour Rowan Oak – This was the home of William Faulkner from 1930 to 1962. Built in 1844, today it’s owned by the university. Many of the trees on the property predate the Civil War. Inside there’s a small museum where you can learn about Faulkner and his contributions to American literature. Daily tours are available for $5 USD (cash only).
  • Explore Ole Miss – Built in 1848, Ole Miss (the University of Mississippi) is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful university campuses in the country. Many of the buildings are built from red brick, and the main hall (the Lyceum, used as a hospital during the Civil War) boasts a set of Roman-style pillars.

WHERE TO STAY Since Oxford is quite small, Airbnb is your best option here.

Old cannons outside of Vicksburg, USA

Like Oxford, there’s not much to do in town, and you really don’t need much time here.

  • Take a historic walking tour – There are 35 markers around town that highlight important events and buildings, illuminating Vicksburg’s turbulent legacy. You can download a free self-guided map from Visit Vicksburg with several routes to choose from, as well as information on all the sights.
  • Visit Vicksburg National Military Park – This park marks where the actual siege of Vicksburg took place between March 29 and July 4, 1863. The battle claimed over 3,000 lives and, along with Gettysburg, marked the turning point of the war in favor of the Union. In the park, you’ll find monuments (over 1,300 of them), trenches, cannon batteries, antebellum homes, and an old gunboat. Admission is $10 USD per person or $20 USD per vehicle.
  • Tour antebellum homes – To get a glimpse at life before (and during) the war, visit some of Vicksburg’s historic antebellum homes (large, elegant mansions built before the Civil War), some of which date back to the 1790s. Some you can only view from the outside, while others offer tours. If you’re looking to splurge, some have even been converted to guesthouses where you can stay overnight (they aren’t cheap though). For an antebellum tour, check out Vicksburg Old Town Tours .

WHERE TO STAY Vicksburg is also super small, so use Airbnb .

A historic antebellum home in Natchez, USA

This town features countless antebellum homes. Since the city surrendered quickly during the Civil War, these weren’t torched or ransacked, which has kept them intact for visitors to visit today. Seeing them was one of the highlights of my time in the South. There are over 20 homes open for visits and tours. Of the ones I visited, my favorites were these:

  • Longwood – This home had the most impressive architecture (it’s designed in an octagon).
  • Rosalie – I found this home to have the most beautiful interior.
  • Stanton Hall – This had the prettiest grounds.

WHERE TO STAY Natchez is expensive, so you’ll want to compare your hotel options on Booking.com with any suitable Airbnb options you find.

It’s time to drive back to NOLA. It’s a short drive (just under three hours) so be sure to stop along the way anytime you see something that piques your interest!

While it can sometimes be challenging and sobering coming face to face with the legacy of America’s past, exploring the South is a must for anyone looking to learn more about our diverse country and the events that have shaped it.

From distinct food to unique music to rich history, a road trip around the Southern US has something to offer everyone. It’s one of the most underrated areas of the country.

Day 1 : Arrival In Atlanta

Location: atlanta, accommodation: hotel, accommodation name: courtland grand hotel by wyndham, meals included: no meals.

Arrive at the airport for your direct flight to Atlanta.

Day 2 : Nashville

Location: nashville, accommodation name: hyatt place opryland.

Driving into Tennessee to Lynchburg, this quintessential little town is a true slice of unspoilt 50s America, with its red-brick courthouse, general store and one traffic light. It’s a great place to just browse the shops and get a bite to eat before we visit Lynchburg’s claim to fame: the Jack Daniel Distillery. Obviously it’s where Jack Daniel’s whisky is made, since 1884 and a tour is a great experience. Interestingly, the county is ‘dry’ and locals are not allowed to consume the product they are most famous for. Continuing acrossTennessee’s rolling green hills we soon arrive at ‘Music City USA’, Nashville.

Day 3 : Nashville

In downtown Nashville we visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. A huge museum of all things ‘Country & Western’, it has floors of fascinating exhibits from the earliest days of country music to the megastars of today. There are films and videos of music’s greatest, with their life-stories and costumes. The famed Music Row is close by, lined with studios and record company offices, where we visit the legendary RCA Studio B, where Elvis recorded many of his greatest hits, followed by a ‘who’s who’ of recording superstars such as Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. Lower Broadway is Nashville’s nightlife centre, with stupendous live music in famous honky-tonk bars like Robert’s Western World and The Stage on Broadway and many more. There’s a fantastic atmosphere along the entire street and an evening here is a real ‘must’! Tonight you have the chance to see a country music show at the Grand Ole Opry.

Day 4 : Memphis

Location: memphis.

Today we say goodbye to Nashville and head to the far west of Tennessee and the city of Memphis and America’s artery, the Mississippi. From its earliest beginnings as a small French garrison, Memphis grew into a magnet for freed slaves after the Civil War and as a cotton trading centre. This afternoon we have a guided tour around the birthplace of Rock n’ Roll – the legendary Sun Studio, where Elvis recorded his first hit. This insignificant, yet iconic 1950s building, was the starting point for Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison amongst others and is a designated National Historic Landmark. You can still see Jerry Lee’s piano and Elvis’ microphone!

Day 5 : Graceland And National Civil Rights Museum

Location: graceland, national civil rights museum.

Today we visit one of America’s biggest tourist attractions, Elvis’ Graceland. The ‘King’ bought the Graceland mansion for $100,000 in 1957 when he was just 22 and it was his main home until his death. From the time it opened to the public in 1982, Graceland has expanded to include Elvis’ private airplanes and his extensive car collection. One of the most iconic houses in America, Graceland’s Meditation Garden is also Elvis’ final resting place. This afternoon we step back into America’s historical milestones visiting the National Civil Rights Museum at The Lorraine Motel. It was here Martin Luther King was shot on 4th April 1968. Five years previous on 28th August 1963 he delivered his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech around the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC to a crowd of 250,000 people. The following year in 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through non-violent resistance. In that same year, President Johnson got a law passed prohibiting all racial discrimination. This evening is at leisure to sample the music scene at Memphis’ famous Beale Street.

Day 6 : Amtrak Train To New Orleans

Location: amtrak train station, new orleans, accommodation name: courtyard by marriott - french quarter.

An early departure this morning as we catch the renowned ‘City of New Orleans’ Amtrak train service to New Orleans, a real little piece of America. The double-decker, classic silver coloured train carriages, so typical of the US, feature comfortable reclining armchairs with plenty of legroom, as well as a panoramic glass observation deck and dining car. Our journey takes us through vast forests, farms and the small ‘southern’ towns lining the eastern bank of the Mississippi like pearls on a necklace. Nearing New Orleans, excitement mounts and we cross Lake Pontchartrain, bizarrely it appears like the train is actually travelling over the water itself. In the evening why not step out and try New Orleans’ famed Cajun cuisine – there are plenty of fantastic restaurants.

Day 7 : New Orleans

Location: new orleans.

This morning we have a walking tour of New Orleans’ famous French Quarter with an expert local guide. We see the charming art galleries and antique shops along Royal Street, the white stucco St Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square, full of artists, musicians and fortune tellers, and walk up the iconic Bourbon Street, centre of the city’s nightlife. The afternoon is free for you to explore this charming city at your leisure. This evening, you have the opportunity to enjoy an evening jazz cruise with dinner on board the Steamboat City of New Orleans.

Day 8 : Free Day In New Orleans

A free day to relax in the ‘Big Easy’ and explore further afield. Alternatively, you may choose to visit some of the most impressive Antebellum Plantations outside New Orleans combined with a fascinating boat tour of the nearby Louisiana swamps, known for their alligators and snapping turtles, and where you can admire the fauna, such as the moss-draped cypresses native to the bayous of Louisiana. Oak Alley Plantation is a National Historic Landmark and is considered the Deep South’s most spectacular mansion. Dating from 1839 with two rows of mighty oaks leading down towards the Mississippi River, the house has been fully restored to its magnificent 19th-century opulence and grandeur.

Day 9 : Houston And Nasa

Location: houston, nasa johnson space center, accommodation name: hilton nasa clear lake.

We leave New Orleans this morning heading ever westwards along Louisiana’s Cajun country towards Texas. As we enter the outskirts of Houston, our first stop is at the world-famous NASA Johnson Space Centre, still a working NASA base from where the international space station is controlled. We visit ‘Mission Control’, now restored to its 1965 look with all the original equipment and furniture – a unique experience. We also see a full-size Saturn V rocket which famously has no on-board computer, they were just too big at the time, plus the huge indoor training facility for the astronauts of the International Space Station.

Day 10 : San Antonio

Location: san antonio, accommodation name: menger hotel.

We continue further into the south Texas plains arriving in San Antonio this afternoon. Originally settled by the Spanish who built a mission station here, the Alamo, whose name was destined to be one of the most evocative words in American history. It was here in 1836 that a seriously outnumbered group of settlers, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, were besieged by the Mexican army for nearly two weeks before they were overrun. Tonight we stay just round the corner from the Alamo and within easy walking distance to the charming Riverwalk area with its many bars and restaurants, ideal for trying out the region’s famed Tex-Mex cuisine.

Day 11 : Fort Worth

Location: austin, fort worth, accommodation name: courtyard by marriott - fort worth.

We say goodbye to friendly San Antonio and travel north to Dallas, stopping in Austin for some free time to explore. On arrival in Fort Worth, we visit the historical Stockyard District. This evening you have the opportunity to attend the world’s only year-round rodeo, held in the historic Cowtown Coliseum. See some of the best rodeo athletes perform thrilling feats of bull-riding, tie-down roping, team-roping, barrel-racing, bronc-riding and breakaway roping.

Day 12 : Dallas

Location: dallas.

This morning we visit the infamous Dealey Plaza, where President John F Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. The floor in the Texas Book Depository from where thefatal shots were fired has been converted into the excellent 6th Floor Museum dedicated to explaining the background and the events of that fateful day on the 22nd of November in 1963. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Dallas.

Day 13 : Return Home

Accommodation: overnight flight.

Transfer to the airport for your return flight via Atlanta.

Location: United Kingdom

You arrive home this morning after a very memorable tour.

Reviews of this Operator

This review is for the....

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

I have been on three...

I have been on three trips with Riviera Travel so far, with two more booked during 2024. Highly recommended. Excellent tour guides. Great program of visits. Great hotels used.

We would go again in a heartbeat

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Second escorted tour with this...

Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.

Riviera South Africa tour - awesome

Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Rhine Christmas markets cruise

Just completed a 5 day trip on the Rhine. Our first river cruise and a tester for future cruises. The boat was well appointed and the cabin and public areas were spotlessly clean. The staff were attentive and contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere on the boat. The quality of the food surpassed that which we have experiened on sea cruises in recent years. I have written little because it was a faultless experience. We have booked a further cruise (in France) on the basis of our experience.

Cruise ship William Wordsworth: A...

Cruise ship William Wordsworth: A cruise ship of excellence, very well appointed, comfortable & indulgent. We departed Budapest and cruised the Blue Danube heading to Vienna. The top deck offers sun loungers, a heated pool, golf and a place to just sit & relax. The cabins have everything you could want for but above all incredible comfortable. The staff are professional, courteous, and attentive and do everything to make your stay a pure pleasure. This is an experience you will remember for many years.

Although most people seem to...

Although most people seem to book and pay for their holidays online, because we live close by we prefer to make a personal visit. In my opinion if they are offering this as an option they should be better equipped to accommodate visits in person. We have not been on our river cruise yet, so can't comment on that yet.

My 3rd Riviera trip within...

My 3rd Riviera trip within a year and I wasn't disappointed 😁 This time it was https://www.rivieratravel.co.uk/escorted-tours/southern-india-coastal-route-solo-travellers This trip, although not cheap, it really offers exceptional value for money as you see a lot of Tamil Nadu and Kerela, stay in fantastic hotels, excellent breakfasts every day as well as some lunches and dinners also included. George Bareham, our "Tour Manager" was brilliant, very professional, but also friendly and diligent. Satheeshan, our local guide was helpful and picked me up antibiotics when I got ill, he was a nice chap, if (for my taste) went on a bit and used 20 words when 1 would suffice. Mr Sweeny, our coach driver was fantastic, really professional and an exceptionally good driver. His assistant, Murgon wad a delight, always smiling and attentive. This is a full on trip, early morning starts and quite a packed itinerary, but still leaving time to laze around some brilliant hotel swimming pools. Only a couple of suggestions to improve the holiday. More shopping time in Cochin and change carriers from Etihad who, unfortunately aren't the excellent airline they used to be. But, will I use Riviera Travel again - Yes 😁

Presently in Croatia staying at...

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again

The Turkish holiday I wished to book - as advertised in their latest brochure was not available on the dates advertised, in addition the price had been increased by 25%. The shorter duration Turkish holiday, although priced as per brochure had been reduced by 1 day. In addition the online documentation is at odds with that received in the post.

Essence Of Japan Tour 1st April fiasco

Titan really need to get their act together. The Japan tour was the trip of a lifetime for my son and I and it started badly when most of us learned we would not be seated with our partners on the 13 hour outward flight. Obviously no thought about their customers but then I suppose Titan will blame BA. Then after nearly 2 hours in passport control when we arrived we then had to wait for our rooms to be available. Then we had to endure an inexperienced local guide for most of the tour who was difficult to understand and also got us lost a few times trying to find a shrine, temple or Samurai house. We spent nearly an hour walking in the park trying to find the Big Buddha temple in Nara. We then had an excellent guide for one day only around day 10 and then she was inexplicably changed for another guide. Overall the whole tour was spoiled by these issues to say the least but we all stuck together and bonded well despite all these grievances. Having now returned home and read about similar issues on other recent Titan tours to Japan then it is obvious Titan have sadly let down a lot of people. Still waiting for a response, apology and some recompense? Paul Smith

20 day tour from Toyko to Nagasaki via coach and train. Great tour seeing a great country aways on my bucket list! Learnt a lot about culture and the country 3 weeks is a long time and the only hing I would say is some cities need a bit more time but the trip covers a vast area so time was tight.

India golden triangle with Ranthambore

First time in India and first time on an escorted tour. We were delighted with all the effort free hotels, excursions, travel and experiences. India is a complete assault on the senses in every way imaginable. We had a fantastic group to travel with which made it so enjoyable. Alex Matthaei was the best tour manager: drole, unflappable, a joke a day (raj of the pun) , oiled the gears so everything ran smoothly. Tour guide Anil was so schooled in Indian history he brought the sites alive and would answer any question on India. It’s a full on schedule with early starts but absolutely worth it. Hotels and food all of a high standard. Icing on the cake : we saw tigers !! Let down at Heathrow as our return driver hadn’t been booked , knocked a star off. Still waiting for a response to complaint.

Essence of Japan

Geoff our Titan tour manager really made the trip fun & enjoyable The Japanese guides were very knowledgeable but their English pronunciation made it difficult to understand. The down side of the trip wss once again the failure with British Airways, this time with loss of pre booked allocated seats.

Date of experience : 16 April 2024

Thank you Ian, for your feedback from which we are delighted to hear how well Geoff organised your Tour. It is a shame to read you did not receive your pre booked allocated seats. Our Customer Service Team have been made aware and will be in contact with you soon to resolve this matter. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Golden Triangle with Ranthambore

With a bit of trepidation we booked our first escorted tour to India’s Golden Triangle with Ranthambore National Park through Titan Travel. Our fears were unfounded as Alex our Titan Tour representative had the whole tour running like clockwork and so well organised. Moving us to a different seat on the coach every day meant as a group we all got to meet and get to know each other quite quickly which was a great idea. We loved Alex’s morning jokes and dry wit. Anil our tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable in Indian history and made every excursion informative. He also had a lovely sense of humour. The hotels were all fabulous with a good variation of buffet food to suit everyone. Will definitely be booking another tour with Titan Travel in the future.

Hi Jeanette, It's great to hear you have enjoyed your first escorted tour with Titan Travel. Thank you for your kind comments about Alex, we will share them with the India team. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Golden Triangle, India 🇮🇳

Our first time in India and it didn't disappoint. Our tour guide Alex Mathaei was wonderful, well organised and told a joke or two which always made us laugh. Anil, our local guide knew his history, very knowledgeable and always answered any question asked. It was a large group of us who all got on well. Lovely hotels where you could relax after a full on day. Early morning starts each day which you'd need to be prepared for, but well worth it. The Taj Mahal was awesome, bucket list ticked! The safari round Ranthambhore didn't disappoint, and we were very fortunate to see Tiger's, wow, so majestic. The only thing that let this holiday down was the seating arrangements on the plane,Titan didn't have us sitting next to our companion, but, thankfully on our return journey Alex managed to sort this out for us.

Hi Lyn, We are delighted we have been able to exceed your expectations on your first Titan tour. We hope you will be joining us again on many more adventures. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

The booking staff were helpful…

The booking staff were helpful especially Ferhat and Adam. Ferhat is a proper salesman. He knows how to talk to customers. I ended booking for 2 holidays when initially I wanted to book only one with Titan and the 2nd one with another company. That shows he is good at his job. I previously had a bad experience with Titan in Paloma Italy in 2010 which wasn’t investigated by Titan. I avoided Titan for many years so this is a trial to see how this holiday will go.

Date of experience : 15 April 2024

Hi Emah, Thank you for taking the time to share your great feedback with us.. We are delighted to hear how well Ferhat and Adam looked after you. Thank you for returning to Titan, we cannot wait to send you away on your next tour. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Brilliant booking

Brilliant booking service staff are friendly and treat you as an interesting individual. They are happy to explain their superb tours and the extra little details they provide.

India’s Golden Triangle with Ranthambore

Brilliant trip, well organised (thank you Alex Matthaei) even laughed at most of his jokes. We also had a really well informed guide (Anil) who gave us insights into Indian culture as well as history behind each of the sites we visited. The hotels were fabulous and a varied range of meals available at each sitting. Transport between cities was an adventure in itself. I had never been along a dual carriageway on the wrong side of the road facing oncoming traffic before, but it seemed that is what they do when the road is closed. We got there in one piece and was something to laugh about with the rest of the group. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this trip and am looking at another trip with them in the future.

Thank you Ann, for a great review. We are glad Alex's humour kept you amused during the tour! We will ensure your kind comments are passed onto him and the India team. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Golden Triangle India

I had a great time on this tour. The booking administration team was helpful. On the day of departure, I was collected by a lovely driver and from then on my whole experience was fabulous. I was with a fantastic group of people and we were fortunate enough to be led by Alex and Anil on our adventures. Borh were knowledgeable and organised. Can't wait to go on another Titan tour

India's Golden Triangle Tour

Just back from the Golden Triangle tour. Had an amazing time thanks to our tour manager Alex Matthaei and local tour guide Anil Kumar. Couldn't fault the organisation, quality of the hotels and knowledge of both of the above gentlemen. Truly an exceptional experience.

Thank you for your feedback - we are delighted you enjoyed the Golden Triangle tour and Alex made your holiday. We hope to see you again soon for more Titan Travel adventures. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

No trouble at all!

We spoke with Titan just before they closed for the evening and left our number for a call back. Adam rang back and was interested in making our booking: he was affable abd knowledgeable, and it was a pleasure to speak with someone who was so professional. Thank you.

Titan Travel Essence of Japan

AWFUL TITAN. ESSENCE OF JAPAN Titans poor service managed to sully rather than polish and enhance what they claimed would be a "VIP"experience. At circa £6450 with single supplement on what I hoped would be the holiday of a lifetime we are extreemly disappointed. Our titan rep Ian said he had not been to Japan previously. His main experience I gather was in Spain. He seemed to treat the trip as his holiday and be out of his depth..reactive to issues rather than pro active. The on site japanese guide was a nice lady but poor english and gave minimal info or interpretation, certainly not providing the "enthusiastic and knowledgeable" service claimed in the brochure.. I would recommend using ANY OTHER COMPANY THAN TITAN. Some problems I experience: 1. Hotel not ready on arrival and no courtesy room offered so taken to the river bank for two hours..waste of half a day. 2. On site guide..poor English and little insight or interpretation offered. She managed to get us lost on 3 occasions. Resulted in rushing, further time wasted and even more frustration when it should have been a pleasure. I believe we missed out on several sights as a result. 3. No flexibility or thinking on feet from guides..Having spent hours up tokyo sky tree in the rain with poor visibility we drove past main cherry blossom sites (why do they think we booked early April?) 4. Poor service by guides only further highlighted when substituted on day 10 by another rep who was very good. Sadly she lasted one day. 5. Long queues at breakfast on occasion. Sometimes set up in conference rooms. VERY POOR in comparison with similar tours we have taken.

Golden Triangle

I have just returned from a 9 day tour with Saga/Titan tour of the Golden Triangle . This was my first foray into travel as a singleton, so was somewhat nervous . I needn’t have worried the whole trip was wonderful, & I met some lovely people. It was very well organised from the start to the end. Alex our guide was great at herding us up, & that was no mean task at times! The venues & the hotels were all amaxing . Very hard to say which was my favourite , I think it probably was the Taj Mahal & then the safari trips to see the tigers. Absolutely amazing ! Thank you Alex for a memorable holiday & being a great tour guide! 👌

Hi Steve, Thank you for your amazing feedback. We are delighted to read you have had such a memorable holiday. We will ensure your kind comments are fed back to Alex. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Throughly recommend this tour Sanjeev has been the most amazing guide and shown us the real India His knowledge, compassion and genuine kindness has made this a truly special experience Everything went to plan and added extras made sure we could just enjoy our journey We could not have wished for a better person to guide us through Lots of special memories with a fabulous group of people

We were also on the Titan tour to Japan…

We were also on the Titan tour to Japan starting 1st April. This was a trip of a lifetime birthday present for my husband I wanted it to be a memorable one. Our experience of BA was not great and we would avoid flying with them again. We visited some amazing places during the tour but for us the greatest disappointment was that Titan are providing local tour guides who are really out of their depth. Titan advertise themselves as “Escorted Tour Specialists “ and in their travel documents it states: “ We know how important it is that your holiday runs smoothly “ and “you will be guided by some of the most passionate and knowledgable tour guides in the world, on hand to help every step of the way”. Our local guide got us lost on a few occasions, did not have much knowledge of places we visited and definitely could not answer questions we had as she was out of her depth knowledge wise and language wise. We tolerated this for 10 days which was a shame as our biggest reason for travelling was to learn about Japans history and culture. As a group we raised our concerns and we were finally given a new guide who was great. She was with us for one day and then replaced by another for one day and then it was the end of the tour. This aspect of the tour was very disappointing and Titan should not have allowed this to happen especially since on our return we have now read similar reviews from travellers who were on tours of Japan ahead of us. So why was this not put right? We are given opportunities to provide feedback but this needs to be acted upon or else what is the point. I am not sure if we would travel with Titan again. The deciding factor will be how Titan deal with our concerns and complaint. In our Titan paperwork it states “Travellers are entitled to ..compensation …where the travel services are not performed or are improperly performed” So it’s over to you Titan….your chance to prove that you really care about your customers. I am hoping that I will soon be able to return to Trustpilot to write a positive review on how you have dealt with our complaint and disappointment.

The Marble Palace

The Marble Palace was originally built for Count Grigory Orlov, who as a young artillery officer had led the conspiracy to dethrone Peter III in favour of the Emperor's wife, the future Catherine the Great. Among the rewards for his support and counsel during the early years of her reign, construction began on the Marble Palace in 1768, and alongside Rinaldi many of the finest foreign and Russian craftsmen and sculptors of the day were employed to provide its intricately decorated interiors. The name of the palace comes from the fact that in total 32 different types of marble were used to create the exterior and interior ornamentation of the Palace.

Count Orlov gradually faded from influence and favour, and by the time of his death in 1783 - two years before the decoration of the palace was completed - he had long abandoned his magnificent St. Petersburg home. On order of Catherine, the palace was bought from Orlov's heirs into the Imperial Estates, and presented to Catherine's second grandson, Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich. It remained the St. Petersburg residence of junior members of the Imperial family until the October Revolution. In 1843, Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich ordered major remodelling of the Marble Palace by the architect Alexander Briullov, who left only the Marble Hall and the Grand Staircase intact in their original form. Briullov retained the basic plan of the building, but created new interiors with gothic and renaissance styling.

After the Revolution, the Marble Palace was used first to house the Academy of the History of Material Culture, and then from 1937 as the Lenin Museum (at which time the interiors on the second floor of the building were stripped of their original decor). In 1992, the palace was granted to the State Russian Museum, which has overseen massive renovation work and chosen the building as home of a permanent collection of modern art . There is also an exhibition devoted to the last owner of the palace, Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov, who, as well as holding several prominent roles in government and administration including many years as President of the Academy of Sciences, was also a talented poet and friend to many of the key figures of the Silver Age of Russian Culture. The palace is also used to host a wide variety of temporary exhibitions.
