What is a specialized hybrid shaft?
Graphite design hybrid shafts, graphite design tour ad di hybrid shaft, graphite design tour ad iz hybrid shaft, graphite design tour ad hy shaft, our experience, can this shaft be customized to a different length or weight, what is the warranty or guarantee on this shaft, are there any specific swing characteristics or playing styles that this shaft is best suited for, how does the torque of this shaft compare to other models, can this shaft be used for both hybrid and fairway wood clubs.
Updated February 2024 to update current pricing information.
Golfers are becoming more aware of the benefits of being properly fit for their equipment. Longer distances, more accuracy, and lower scores can all be achieved by getting the right equipment for your swing. Although it is common place for many golfers, the fittings often stop at drivers and irons. Golfers neglect their fairway woods, wedges, putters, and importantly, hybrids. Getting a whole bag fitting is the best way to make sure there are no holes in your bag. Hybrids especially can be versatile clubs that can allow golfer to lay up, attack par-3 holes, and escape trouble from around the course. Matching the hybrid club head to a high performance shaft can unlock swing benefits you have likely never experienced if you have never been fit for a hybrid or tired the Graphite Design Tour AD hybrid shafts.
Each golf club loads and unloads differently. Hybrids have a wide range of clubhead weights, shapes, and configurations that require more attention that some golfers realize. The industry leader in hybrid shaft performance is, without question, Graphite Design. Their Tour AD DI Hybrid shaft is among the favorites for professional club fitters and professional players. Beyond the AD DI, Graphite Design also offers a slightly higher launching Tour AD IZ shaft and a hybrid specific AD HY (Hybrid) shaft. We put all three of these shafts to the test to see what differences they can offer to different golfers.
- High Launch – Graphite Design Tour AD HY
- Medium Launch – Graphite Design Tour AD IZ
- Low Launch – Graphite Design Tour AD DI
The Tour AD DI is unmistakable and the performance of the shaft matches. Made with high modulus aerospace quality carbon fiber and the Material Stiffness Integration (MSI) the Tour AD DI is a complete hybrid shaft offering. Billed as a mid launch, low to mid spin golf shaft, the AD DI will fit a wide range of golfers and swing styles. Notably, the AD DI is the only Graphite Design Hybrid offered in weights above 100-grams.
The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is slightly higher launching compared to the Tour AD DI. The Tour AD IZ is well suited for golfers looking to gain more height for approaching greens, especially on longer holes. Golfers looking to elevate lower lofted hybrids will also love the efficiency of this shaft and how easy it is to swing. The AD IZ is the perfect complement to the AD DI and great for golfers looking to secure the middle part of their golf bag.
The AD HY hybrid shaft is the highest launching hybrid specific shaft from Graphite Design. The Tour AD HY is perfect for golfers that present slower speeds to the ball or that need to increase their launch angles coming from the fairways and roughs. If you struggle getting your golf ball into the air, the AD HY is the shaft for you.
Getting fit for your hybrids and then building the shaft to match your specific delivery conditions is the best route to ensure you get the most performance possible from your hybrids. Graphite Design shafts stand out as the best for golfers that demand performance throughout the middle of their golf bags. Other premium options are available but the matrix of the Tour AD DI, Tour AD IZ, and Tour AD HY offer almost everything golfers need in three easy models. My favorite is the Tour AD DI and I love the offering in my driving iron and hybrids. Overall, I saw better distance control and more accuracy coming from the fairway with the Tour AD DI over all competing hybrid shafts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this shaft can be customized to different lengths and weights. Customized modifications can optimize shaft performance for individual players. I’d recommend consulting with a professional club fitter for personalized adjustments.
The warranty of this shaft is like a safety net for your game. Graphite Design offers a 1-year warranty for manufacturing defects. Customization options are available for length and weight, ensuring ideal swing characteristics and club compatibility.
I find that the Graphite Design Tour AD DI Hybrid Shaft is best suited for players with a smooth swing tempo and seeking a mid-high shot trajectory. The stiff flex and advanced graphite material properties contribute to its performance.
In comparison to other models, the torque of this shaft is lower, offering increased stability and control. Shaft customization allows for fine-tuning to match individual swing characteristics and playing styles, enhancing overall performance on the course.
Absolutely, this shaft is versatile and compatible with both hybrid and fairway wood clubs. Its design and flex make it a top choice for players seeking high performance across different clubs in their bag.
Each golfer is different, and those differences are exaggerated in the hybrid sections of the golf bag. As some of the longest clubs players frequently hit from the ground, hybrids can be the most difficult to get fit correctly. Do not just think that what shaft you put into your driver will be best as you move into other graphite shafts. Each club should fit a specific role and building it to fit you is the best approach. The complete offering Graphite Design has for golfers of all swing types and speeds is impressive. No matter what you are looking for, Graphite Design can dial you in with one of their Tour AD offerings. Low, middle, and high launch offerings make it easy to get your ideal flight. We recommend using a professional club fitter to help you find yours today.

Solid Feel and Distance
This shaft has all the feel and distance that you've come to expect from Graphite Design. The 65g version is light but the performance isn't compromised. Nothing feels as good as "puring" a shot with one of these shafts. David Campbell on 24th Jul 2023
Ordered this shaft for a ping 4 hybrid. To me, while the shaft is very smooth with no "bordy" feel, the shaft played heavy, more so than the 85 gram Hzrdus and Evenflow black. For me, I loose a bit of the head weight. That said, the shaft does deliver as promised, a bit more height and spin without any ballooning. All in all a solid performer Bobby on 1st May 2019
Graphite Design HY Shaft
Great shaft, feels stable, more stable than I was expecting. Great mid-high ball flight without ballooning. Going to order another 85s for my 25* H1. Unknown on 16th May 2018

Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Hybrid Shaft Review
More in reviews:.
50 Words or Less
The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft is remarkably consistent. Stable tip provides control while the smooth feel in the upper section keeps you from over swinging.
Introduction
There are times on the course when you feel completely locked in. For most of us, those times aren’t typically the tee shot on a long par 3 or a risky approach shot on a par 5. With their Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft, Graphite Design hopes to change that and get your long game “ I n the Z one” more often.
The hybrid version of the Tour AD IZ is painted exactly like the wood version. Its combination of white, black, and orange makes it an uncanny fit for my Jack Skellington hybrid cover.
Aesthetically, I’ve always liked Graphite Design’s shafts. The branding is toned down, there are no distractions near the club head, but they often use bold colors. With the AD IZ hybrid shaft, there’s just a splash of orange, so only those in the know will recognize what you’ve got in your bag.
My recollection of the Tour AD IZ wood shaft (review HERE ) was that it provided a smooth feel without a major kick . I found the same thing in the AD IZ hybrid shaft. The butt and mid section are softer than the tip. That’s where you’ll feel a controlled energy transfer from your hands down the shaft.
The tip of the AD IZ is rock solid . Even on mishits, you won’t feel the shaft twist in your hands. For me, that strong tip section allows me to feel confident that I’m in total control of the shot.
NOTE: There are two different profiles in the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft . The 85 and 95 gram versions are stiffer in the tip and softer in the mid and butt. The 65 and 75 gram versions are stiffer in the tip and mid, softer in the butt. My comments relate to the 85 gram version that I tested.
Performance
As soon as I got the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft in hand, I loaded it into the new Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 . I loved the head but the stock shaft wasn’t an ideal fit. With the Tour AD IZ installed, the CBX 119 hybrid is making a beeline for a spot in my bag.
In my first launch monitor session with the Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft, what jumped out at me was the consistency of the spin numbers . Despite a limited warm up and no prior testing with the shaft, the spin stayed in a 300 RPM range shot after shot. The value of that consistency on the course is immense: no ballooning shots, no bullets that run through greens, and no wild shot shapes.
When I looked beyond the spin, I saw the same consistency in launch and distance. With the same mid launch, mid/low spin, and high ball speed, I was seeing every shot land within a 10 yard window . For me, that kind of repeatability with a hybrid is a game changer. What’s more, there were no wild, unpredictable shot shapes.
The Tour AD IZ comes in four weights . The 65 and 75 gram models are softer and promote mid/high launch with mid/low spin. These weights are available in R2, R1, and Stiff. The 85 and 95 gram versions are stiffer, designed for mid launch and low spin. These weights are offered in Regular, Stiff, and X-Flex.
Because of the many different ways that people use hybrids, not to mention the wide variety of swings, there is no single perfect hybrid shaft. That said, for me, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is as close to perfect as anything I’ve found. The feel is great, and the consistency is unmatched.

Fantastic to see this. I got fitted for a drive this winter at club champion and have the AD IZ 6s in my driver so was interested to hear about the hybrid shaft. After your cbx119 review I’ve really wanted to try the 3w and hydrids with the IZ series just don’t have a great way to do it without paying for another fitting so I was happy to see you review the combo. 👍
I currently use a Tour AD XC 6X in my Driver and It works great. I also use Aerotech 115X in my irons. I swing the driver at 105. I am thinking or ordering a PXG 19 degree Gen x2 hybrid with this shaft. I am thinking a 95X shaft might be too much for me. I am wondering if you would recommend the 8X. I am also concerned it might be too light for me. I currently use a Tour AD HY shaft 95S in an 818 titleist hybrid and its good, but thinking the X would give me some more consistency.
Unfortunately there’s no way for me to credibly recommend a shaft over the internet. My best advice is to get a fitting where you can test those options.

Looking to upgrade my hybrid shaft. Has anyone put an AD DI or AD HY in a Titleist 915h? Thoughts on either?

The DI is a model in the line of Tour AD shafts. You mean whats the difference between the AD HY and the AD DI in the hybrid models? The AD HY will be softer and higher launch and spin. Th

I haven't hit or fit anyone with this combo, but question why you'd want to. You can get any Diamana hybrid shaft (all three colors, all weight options) and the rogue black for free. The AD DI/HYB is going to perform very similarly to the rogue/S+/Tour Blue (also a free option, though rogue black is basically same shaft). Unless you're just sold on the orange candy cane, I doubt your ~$150-200 will get you a better result.

I've played the AD DI and the BB shafts and honestly never really liked them. Expensive shafts and I found better numbers in the end with stock shafts. If I were you i'd go for something like a Diamana or Rogue as Back Nine said. My 915H with the whiteboard is one of the best combo's i've ever had same with my 915F with the rogue.

It depends on if the stock shaft fits you. The stock Shafts don't fit me due to the lighter weight. I prefer weights in the 105+g range for hybrids. I had never played an AD-DI until I was fit for it in the 915F 21*. Always thought DI was expensive and overrated. For me, this shaft is great and it's the best anti left combo I've hit in a hybrid. Feel and sound is amazing. It goes higher than I'm used to, but doesn't balloon. Previous hybrid was a Adams Pro Black 18* with Steelfiber 110X. I can actually stop the 915 w/DI on a green. Worth the upgrade for me but I don't change clubs often. Also have a Tour Green 105TX and Steelfiber 110X, but haven't felt the need to experiment. If I need lower launch I'll get a 712U or Apex UT.
Love the DIs in all my clubs! If you like a low kicking shaft with all the feel in the world, medium spin, its for you. I hammer my SLDR hybrid with DI

I have it in my R15 driver (7x) and my Adam's hybrid (105x). I was fit for it and I haven't thought twice about it since. It works well for me and my swing. It does launch higher, which I like, than my old hybrid but it was a different club altogether.

The DI hybrid shaft, for me, is the best hybrid shaft I've ever played for my swing. I don't even look at another shaft - DI-85 all the way. It's extremely stable without being too stiff. Launches high without ballooning. And the feel is incredible. IMO there are very few companies that have "figured out" the hybrid shaft. GD is one of them with the DI. That's why you see so many in play on the PGA Tour. It can stand up to a lot of different swings. I personally think it plays firm to flex overall. I play the S-flex and usually play X in my woods. I'm about 103-105 swingspeed so not huge but strong enough.

I've got the DI 105S in a 21* 915H and love it. I got fitted for it at a Team Titleist fitting last fall. Great feel in a heavy shaft with a nice medium to high launch. It's my favorite hybrid shaft ever.

DI95 in my sldr changed the club completely. Granted, the stock shaft was so bad, anything would have been better. Got it here for half price or new. Flight is much improved and it is easily the most controllable club I have in the bag.
I had a DI 95 in a 20* i15 hybrid for a little bit but it never seemed to agree with me. Might have been the head, might have been the shaft, I dunno. Ended up finding a nice g10 21* hybrid that I paired with a oban revenge a few years ago and it hasn't left the bag since. Sold the DI to a friend who put it in his 910H and he still plays it, so it definitely is a quality shaft, just not for everyone.

No but each driver/fairway shaft page will describe the tip, mid, and butt sections relative stiffness. I'm sure you could put them into a chart easily.

Currently using AD DI 105S in my 913h 17* hybrid. I love how it feels and it's deep! I will admit, I have never done Trackman or Launch Monitor, and after putting an AD DI in my driver, I was only going to get an AD DI for my hybrid. I love the shafts and the performance they provide me.

Yes I did - I would have to ask my clubmaker how much. I believe 1". I prefer them to play inbetween S and X so it's better for me to tip an S-flex vs. playing an untipped X, especially since I think the DI hybrid shafts play firm to flex.

What’s everyone’s swing speed that’s gaming the DI in 85g? My irons are 105s and 3w is 7s, so not sure if I go 105 or 85 in the DI. SS is close to 100.
@pepperonipies I have the exact same shaft weights as you do for irons and 3 wood. Have the 85s in my hybrid. Swing speed with driver is 103-105.

Well 85S it is, thanks! Assuming that means you're happy with that weight.

Very happy with it! My favorite club in the bag….
At one time I had Tour Ad's in all my hybrids & woods, great shafts.
I still play a Ping G425 3/19* HYB with Tour AD Di-85S it's an excellent shaft in this club.
Depending on the course, I also play a G425 4/22* HYB with a Tensei CK Orange 80 Stiff, it's equal too or perhaps a bit better, low spinning, very smooth responsive shaft with a nice ball flight.
My 3 Wood is a Ping G425 Max 14.5* with a Tour Ad Di8-Stiff the best shaft I ever hit in all my 3 woods.
Just recently retired my Driver's Tour Ad Di6 Stiff & now playing a Tensei Pro Orange 60 Stiff, which has a slightly lower ball flight & a bit more distance with roll out.
If you upgrade to a Tour AD Di you won't be sorry.

Assuming you mean hybrid/Driving iron shafts.. the utility iron shaft is .355 and profiled for an iron head. There are also regular “tour ad iron shafts” that are spec’d differently as well. The regular “Tour AD DI” is the line of wood and hybrid shafts.
Depends which you are comparing too.

I understand one is for iron use and one is hybrid but the profiles between the two are the same as far as launch and spin from what i'm seeing
