When you rent a bus through National Charter Bus, our 24/7 team is always there to help you hash out the transportation details—including what size bus you need and what amenities you’d like along for the ride. Overnight Bus Parking

We know all you’ll want to think about after a long day of traveling is winding down in your nice, clean bed. But before your group tucks in for a good night’s rest, your bus will need a place to spend the night as well.

Hotel Parking

What’s potentially the easiest place to park your bus overnight? Right at your hotel ! Keeping your vehicle near your driver’s room and board—which you need to provide for them, by the way—makes the loading process easier every morning, since they won’t need transportation to the bus from the hotel.

With that in mind, whether or not your Chicago hotel offers bus parking can be hit or miss. Some lodgings offer complimentary bus parking and others charge extra for motorcoaches, but many places won’t provide either. (Chicago is a dense city, so parking comes at a premium even when oversized vehicles aren’t in the equation.) Just to be sure to ask the concierge if bus parking is available when you call to reserve a block of rooms.

McCormick Place Marshalling Yard

Address : 3050 Moe Dr, Chicago, IL 60616

If parking your charter bus or minibus at the hotel is not an option, this public lot is most likely your best bet. Bus drivers can park their motorcoaches in Lot B for a rate of $38 per day (and overnight, depending on spot availability), which includes unlimited in and out privileges. The parking attendant can even provide your driver with taxi information so they have a safe ride back to the hotel after a long day. It’s open 24/7/365—except when there’s a large trade show at the nearby convention center, so call (312) 808-3138 ahead of your trip to ensure availability.

Daytime Bus Parking

When you’re out and about during the day, your bus will need a place to park while your group sightsees, enjoys your wedding, cheers on your favorite team, or does whatever your trip brought you to Chicago to do. Luckily, there are a few bus-friendly parking options scattered throughout the city:

The Adler Lot

Address: 1362 S Linn White Dr, Chicago, IL 60605

It’s technically the parking lot attached to the Adler Planetarium, but it serves as the go-to parking zone for buses anywhere near the Museum Campus section of Grant Park. If your group plans to tour the Shedd Aquarium, catch a game at Soldier Field, or otherwise be in Chinatown, the South Loop, or Little Italy—this parking lot is perfect for you.

Your driver can enter any time between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and all vehicles must leave the lot before 11 p.m. Prepaid parking passes are available, but be sure to double-check your calendar before sending your driver here—entry to the lot is very limited during Bears home games and special events at the planetarium.

The Wilson Lot

Address: 4600 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60640

Traveling near the north side of town? Here’s your stop: this parking lot in Lincoln Park, near the skatepark and Montrose Beach. It’s a short drive away from Wrigley Field , the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Chicago History Museum, and trendy neighborhoods like Lake View, Wicker Park, and Uptown. Like the Adler Lot, this lot lets you pre-purchase your parking pass online to save time upon arrival—your driver will just need to print out and display the pass in the bus’s window.

On-Street Parking

There are some select curbside parking areas that can accommodate motorcoaches. Keep in mind that these spaces are available to all vehicles—personal cars and private buses alike—so they may fill up quickly on the weekends or during the peak travel months in summer.

That being said, it may be worth checking out these bus-friendly street parking areas if they’re close to one of your Chicago stops:

  • Canal Street –South of Roosevelt Road, parking is available on the east side of the street Monday through Saturday
  • Kinzie Street –Parking is available on both sides of the street between Des Plaines Street and Union Avenue
  • Green Street —Between Kinzie Street and Carroll Avenue, your driver can park along the east side of the street

Idling in Parking Zones

According to the city of Chicago’s guidelines , motorcoaches may not idle engines in parking areas for more than 3 minutes prior to their time of departure. The only exception to this rule is when outside temperatures are either below 32 degrees or above 80 degrees Fahrenheit—in which case your driver can idle as long as necessary to keep the coach and the passengers safe from the elements.

Loading and Unloading Near Chicago’s Top Attractions

Of course, the closest bus-friendly parking lot is not always within walking distance of where your group needs to be. That’s where loading/unloading zones come in.

These are spaces designated by the city where motorcoaches can temporarily idle while passengers embark and disembark. You cannot load or unload a bus anywhere else besides a parking lot, and buses can stay in these zones for only 15 minutes at a time—so look alive when you see your ride approaching!

There’s plenty of these spots around the city, but here’s where you can load or unload your bus near some popular Chicago attractions:

Skydeck Chicago

For those braving the heights of one of the tallest buildings in the world, exit your bus along Wacker Drive, on the west side of Willis Tower. Ascend the 103 stories up to the Skydeck, venture out onto the clear-glass balcony, watch the traffic zooming down below your feet, and take a group photo with the sweeping views of the city and Lake Michigan as your backdrop.

Millennium Park

Here is where you’ll find the infamous Cloud Gate, the whimsical Crown Fountain, and the interesting architecture of the Pritzker Pavilion. Have your driver drop you off near the Welcome Center, where Stetson Street dead-ends into Upper Randolph Street. Look for the bike rental station and you can’t miss it.

The Magnificent Mile™

Ready to window-shop ‘til you drop? Your driver can drop off your group right in the heart of this premier shopping district, either on the east 200 block of Chicago Avenue (across the street from the Water Works Visitor Center) or at 701 North Rush Street. And don’t worry about picking up something nice for yourself while you’re here—your driver will be more than happy to look after your souvenirs if you leave them on the bus, so you can explore your next stop unencumbered.

a small boy laughs and points at the Ferris wheel at Chicago's Navy Pier

If your group is craving some good eats and fresh air blowing in off the Lake, tell your driver to drop your group off at 588 East Streeter Drive, right near the entrance to Navy Pier. When you reserve through National Charter Bus, your driver will strive to arrive at least 10 minutes early to every stop listed on your itinerary, so no one has to miss a single dinner reservation!

Reserve Your Chicago Charter Bus Rental

Now that you know where to park, all that’s left to do is figure out how you’re going to get there.

Never fear, National Charter Bus can help you with that too. No matter what brings you to the Windy City—a wedding , a college tour , a sightseeing excursion, you name it—we can set your group up with a reliable transportation service that ticks every box. Our huge network of coaches means we can find nearly any combination of vehicle size and featured amenities to suit your group’s needs—from ADA-accessible shuttles with a lift and wider aisleways to full-sized charter buses with WiFi and TVs to keep everyone entertained between stops. I just wanted to reach out to you regarding our rental of your Coach on Friday, May 1st. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Everything worked out perfect for our transportation needs on that night. Nick was an awesome driver, and ALL of us on the bus marveled at his driving skills in Chicago ☺ I cannot say enough about Nick being there in a timely manner, his professionalism and courtesy to all of our guests. Renting this transportation made all of our guests more at ease being in Chicago, and not having to worry about parking, directions and being on time for the Rehearsal / Rehearsal Dinner. Again, thank you for a job well done!!

We used Ideal Charter for our wedding day. We needed a limo bus to transport us (Bride and Groom) as well as the entire bridal party, photographer and videographer. We also used their services to transport us from our reception hall back home. From initial contact, our driver Tom was a pleasure to deal with. As most of you that are married and planned the entire days events yourselves know, the day can make you a nervous wreck. I have heard of stories of limos not showing up or them being entirely trashed or broken(no A/C). None of this was the case with Ideal Charter. We scheduled Tom to pick up the Bride and bridesmaids and drive them to church. Tom showed up exactly on time and arrived to church with no worries. After the ceremony we had a number of spots in the city for photographs. Tom was very knowledgeable and knew how to get around the city even though some streets were closed for city events. He even did additional things like help my Bride in and out of the limo bus. Given that it was a wedding and we were all excited and most likely obnoxious, he showed no sign of being annoyed at all, very professional. At the last minute (the night before) I called Tom and asked him to give us a ride after the reception at 1:30am. He told me not to worry about a thing and that he’ll be there to get us. Sure enough he was there on time and professional. We loaded up our gifts and he took us home. He even helped us unload into the house as well. It’s not often you need a limo bus but if I ever do, Chicago is fun to party in after all, Ideal Charter will be my first call.

GOGO Charters

The Complete Guide to Charter Bus Loading and Parking Logistics

charter buses lined up in a parking lot

We’ve already covered the charter bus rental basics , but what about the parking and pickup details? Pre-planning your staging and loading logistics for your charter bus will help us get your trip running as smoothly as possible.

While booking your charter bus, consider these general tips to organize staging areas, loading areas, and a seamless pickup and drop-off:

1.   Keep your destination in mind.

Finding a place to stage, unload, and park a bus in Washington DC is going to be more difficult than doing so in a more attraction-sparse location. This may seem obvious, but starting with a realistic mindset regarding traffic and transportation accommodations is a good first step.

2.   Consider contacting the city’s Department of Transportation.

Most major cities with high levels of out-of-town travelers have several resources for passengers. These offices will outline any important parking regulations and limitations of charter bus travel, as well as information about necessary travel permits that need to be obtained by passengers.

For example, cities like New York and New Orleans have roads that prohibit buses in historic areas and crowded business districts. If your destination is in travel-restricted areas for buses, your driver will need to take a different route to designated loading areas.

a sign in a city reads "no engine idling max fine $2000"

3.   Understand some important parking terminology.

Major cities will often designate separate parking, staging, and loading areas for buses. When you’re looking into parking and drop off logistics for your bus, be sure you know the difference between the following terms:

  • Staging – Think of this as the waiting time between the bus departing for its destination and when passengers board the bus. Staging areas are where your bus driver will temporarily wait before moving on to the loading area to pick up your group. These designated areas are generally used to keep traffic flow smooth in busy locations and avoid gridlock with buses waiting for their passengers.
  • Loading – Loading time begins when passengers actually begin to board the bus. Charter bus or tour bus loading zones are designated for the pickup of passengers and their luggage, and shouldn’t be used for long-term parking or staging. Loading zones in busy areas generally have a time limit of anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.
  • Idling – Cities like Washington DC and 23 states, including California and Arizona, have laws that limit idling. Depending on the location, a charter bus that isn’t in motion can’t leave the engine running for more than a specified amount of time, usually between 3 to 10 minutes. Keep this in mind when requesting your charter bus driver to pickup and drop-off in certain locations.

4.   Explore parking options at convention centers, museums, stadiums, and parks.

Finding parking spaces for oversized vehicles is often limited in busy cities. Some areas may offer street parking alongside loading and staging areas, while other locations suggest that buses park in large business centers or public areas.

Chicago is a prime example. The city offers designated loading zones near top attractions, but most Chicago charter bus parking must be done at McCormick Place, Soldier Field, or Lincoln Park.

5.   Plan to find multiple loading zones and staging areas for multi-attraction trips.

Cities like Washington DC and Los Angeles are relatively spread out. Walking between locations is doable in some areas, but if you’re traveling with a large group, shuttling there may be easier.

If your group is planning to visit multiple attractions in DC but you have passengers who can’t make the journey along the National Mall, consider mapping out the best pickup and drop-off locations at each stop throughout your journey.

Staging and Unloading at Airports

At GOGO Charters, we understand that chartering a bus for your entire journey isn’t always feasible. Sometimes taking a plane for a cross country trip is simply easier for groups. But what about after the plane lands?

Reserving a private motorcoach as a shuttle will make your airport transfer much easier than relying on transportation from hotel shuttles or rental cars.

Most major airports have a designated location for bus staging before passenger pickup and separate curbside pickup areas that prohibit waiting.

Depending on the airport and the level of traffic, consider contacting Airport Authority to ensure passenger pickup and drop-off is allowed in certain terminals with a charter bus. Some exceptionally busy airports require trip permits for passenger pickup, while others allow simple curbside loading at terminals.

Charter buses can generally be staged at cell phone lots or parking lots designated for oversized vehicles while waiting for passengers. Once passengers arrive curbside at their destination, your driver can arrange a meeting location to load to your group. Cities like Phoenix have charter bus access at multiple airport terminals, while busier locations like Chicago have a separate bus and shuttle center.

Parking and Unloading at Popular Tourist Attractions

Cities with a large number of tourist attractions like New York City and Washington DC have designated drop-off locations near popular areas. Bustling cities like The Big Apple are generally better when traveled by minibus rather than full-sized charter bus.

New York restricts charter buses access on several roads in Lower Manhattan , while all charter vehicles over 33 feet are prohibited in areas like the Financial District.

Attractions like the 9/11 National Memorial and Battery Park in Lower Manhattan have designated passenger pickup and drop-off locations that work around bus restrictions. Parking is still exceptionally limited in these areas, but large groups can use a loading area for up to 15 minutes.

If your group is traveling to busy areas like Lower Manhattan or the National Mall in DC, be sure your loading and unloading process is as streamlined as possible. During peak travel seasons in summer and around holidays, DC sees more than 1,000 motorcoaches daily. So you’ll likely have dozens of other buses needing to unload and load in the same areas.

Charter Bus Parking at Hotels and Lodging Accommodations

Going on a multi-day trip? GOGO Charters caters to trips of all lengths, and we’re always available to help you go the distance—wherever your travels take you.

When planning a long-term group trip, keep two things in mind:

1.   Don’t forget about your driver!

There are a lot of moving parts when organizing a long group trip. You have to take care of your group’s lodging, but you’ll also need to ensure your driver has a place to rest their head.

This can often be an overlooked detail, but we want to make sure your driver is rested and ready to transport your group around town.

2.   Don’t forget about your bus!

Hotels in busy downtown areas are often working with limited parking space, meaning that finding oversized vehicle parking may be difficult, if not impossible.

Be sure to contact your lodging accommodation well in advance to inquire about bus parking. If your hotel does have space, there’s usually an upcharge in the daily parking fee for oversized vehicles. If your hotel doesn’t have space, find a private or public lot that can accommodate large vehicles and secure your driver’s lodging near the lot.

Many groups visiting New York City often have their buses parked in New Jersey for the evening with close by lodging for their driver. Other cities like San Antonio offer overnight parking options for oversized vehicles in the Downtown area for easy access throughout your trip.

Simplify Your Transportation Logistics

At GOGO Charters, we understand that planning a trip can be stressful. With organizing itineraries, airport transfers, lodging, and so much more, we know you have a lot to handle. As experts in group travel, one of our top goals is to help simplify the transportation process for every passenger. Still have questions about a trip? Need a charter bus quote ? HOP-ON-HOP-OFF DOUBLE-DECKER BUS TOUR

A popular option for bus tours is the hop-on-hop-off tour variety.

All the double-decker buses in this section run continuously along mapped routes, and riders have the option to board at several predetermined locations throughout the city.

Travelers can get off the bus at any of these stops and discover the landmarks for themselves. After exploring various areas of Chicago, hop back onto the bus and continue your journey!

There are pre-recorded commentaries that tell you about what you're seeing.

Each ticket will be valid for a certain amount of time (typically 24-48 hours) and you can come and go as you please.

Ticket prices range from $19-$49 for adults and $14-$35 for children, depending on which kind of tour is chosen from which company.

Read our full comparison post on hop-on-hop-off bus tours , where we detail the pros and cons, route maps, and options for discounts.

NON-STOP SIGHTSEEING TOURS

Although hop-on-hop-off bus tours can be very informative, they are designed for exploring the city to allow you to pick your stops and explore at your own pace.

Non-stop sightseeing tours are about guiding you through a specific area, with a live guide's commentary covering the significance of iconic landmarks and the history of an area.

Note that "non-stop" is a bit of a misnomer, as they do stop from time to time, but they make the choice about which sites they will be taking people to.

See It All Mini Bus Tours Chicago

Most of these services are very highly rated and tickets will cost between $30-$50 for adults and $15-$37 for children.

That's one of many reasons that we have a Chicago Travel Tips group on Facebook, where travelers can ask questions about any tour or activity of interest.

Here are a few of the more helpful comments we found:

When it comes to the hop on hop off tours, most people agree that they're a very useful way to become familiar with the city and figure out where everything is located.

That said, there are some things you might want to consider before purchasing tickets, as this next comment reveals.

tour bus parking chicago

As one of our group members notes, when you're using a tourist pass to get tickets for a hop on hop off bus tour, chances are it will only be a 1 day ticket.

Even if you get a 2 day pass, it's very likely the bus tour ticket will only be valid for 1 day.

Other Chicago bus tours are more hit and miss when it comes to the reviews. While some people really enjoyed the Mob and Crime tour, others felt it wasn't anything special.

Thankfully, this isn't an extremely common sentiment, and it does seem that a majority of people who took this tour had a lot of fun.
