Panoramic boat on Lake Bohinj - entry station Ribčev Laz

Logo Turizem Bohinj

The panoramic ride by tourist boat lasts half an hour in one direction. It is the perfect way to view the nearby mountains, lake and the surrounding area. The guide on the boat will tell you about Bohinj, its natural and cultural sights, history and development as well as about the current events in the season. Both boats are electrically-driven, thus they are an ecological way to get to the other side of the lake. You can also combine the ride by boat with visiting many other attractions nearby or shorten your walk along the shore of Lake Bohinj.

TRAVELSLOVENIA.ORG – All You Need To Know To Visit Slovenia

TRAVELSLOVENIA.ORG – All You Need To Know To Visit Slovenia

Welcome to bohinj, the perfect place for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, introducing bohinj.

First, you have to know that Bohinj is an area – not a town. It is a 20 kilometre long and 5 kilometre wide basin in the Julian Alps in northwestern part of Slovenia. The area is very popular due to its beautiful unspoiled nature with one of the most imposing parts of the valley being Lake Bohinj, the largest of the Slovenian lakes. There are several small villages and hamlets in Bohinj with the largest one being Bohinjska Bistrica. The villages that lie in the immediate vicinity of the lake are Ribcev Laz, Ukanc and Stara Fuzina.

Bohinj is part of the Triglav National Park, the only natural park in Slovenia and one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1961, so no wonder natural attractions are the biggest draw here. Despite being less than half an hour’s car drive from the tourist Mecca of Bled, Bohinj feels more isolated and rural and pleasantly less developed than one would expect for a place less than an hour away from an international airport (Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport). Restaurants and places to stay here are very down to earth and local people are attentive and helpful. It’s the perfect place for nature lovers and people who really like peaceful places to recharge their batteries. The area is absolutely stunning in its serenity and unmatched sense of calm and the nightlife is basically non-existent.

Collage of places to stay in Slovenia

Bohinj and the surrounding area is also a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There is a seemingly endless swathe of activities on offer. Summer pursuits include swimming, cycling, horseback riding, fishing, hiking and mountain biking, while adrenaline junkies can try their hand at kayaking, rafting, canoeing, SUP-ing, canyoning, hydrospeeding, diving, climbing, or tandem paragliding. In the winter months these are replaced by skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating and ski touring. In the depths of winter it is also possible to climb frozen waterfalls.

Last updated on November 4, 2023 by Claire Robinson - this article contains affiliate links. If you purchase through them, I get a small commission ( more )

Despite being close to the famous Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj Slovenia has remained wilder and less touristy.  It is a beautiful gem surrounded by the mountains of the  Triglav National Park.  If you love nature, don’t miss the detour. Below is my Guide to help you plan your visit with maps, photos and tips for the best things to do in Bohinj.

Before my tips + photos, here are my favorites for Slovenia:

Pin2 Lake Bohinj Slovenia Travel Guide

Why visit Lake Bohinj in Slovenia?

I think Lake Bohinj should be on every Slovenia Itinerary because:

  • It is Slovenia’s largest permanent lake
  • It is a serene environment where you can connect with nature
  • It looks quite different from one end to the other
  • You can easily admire it from above thanks to the cable car
  • Like many locals will tell you, it is better than Lake Bled (although that can be discussed, see after the video)

Lake Bohinj

Below is a short video that should inspire you to visit Bohinj, one of the best places to visit in Slovenia :

Is Lake Bohinj worth visiting?

Absolutely. It is one of my favorite areas in Slovenia. It lives in the shadow of Lake Bled’s fame. But I think it is underrated. It is such a magnificent lake. I can’t recommend it enough.

Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj?

Wondering if you should go to Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj? Both have a lot to offer and are part of the wonders of Slovenia. So here are your options depending on what you are looking for.

  • If you are doing a road trip around Slovenia – spend a couple of days at each location
  • If you like hiking —> Lake Bohinj – definitively
  • If you like peace and quiet away from tourists —> Lake Bohinj
  • If you like a choice of restaurants and animation —> Lake Bled
  • If you like historical monuments and locations —> Lake Bled
  • If you like views —> Both are phenomenal

Lake Bled vs Lake Bohinj

About Lake Bohinj – Facts

It is really difficult to capture the majestic and peaceful feeling of Lake Bohinj in photos. But here are 3 panoramas from different locations and with different weather conditions to help you get an idea of what you can expect. And in between I have listed a few fact to help you learn more about the Bohinj Lake.

Panorama Bohinj Lake Slovenia

  • Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest permanent lake – it is 4.2 km long (2.6mi) and 1km width max (0.62mi) – If you are wondering why ‘permanent’ it is because there is the Cerknica lake that almost disappears by cycle (when I went there was almost no water)
  • It is located in the heart of the Julian Alps protected as the Triglav National Park – it is between the summits of Vogel (South) and Prsivec (North)

Panorama Bohinj Lake Slovenia 3

  • It is a natural glacial lake that is relatively cold (Mean annual temperature of 8.5°C and July water temperature reaching 17°C)
  • The inflow comes from the West with the Savica stream, and the outflow is at the East to Sava Bohinjka
  • Its elevation is 526m (1726ft) and maximum depth 45m (148ft)
  • In the clear water you can find many many trouts, burbot, chub, mollusks and many other species
  • In Slovene a lake is called Jezero – So its local name is Bohinjsko Jezero

Panorama Bohinj Lake Slovenia 4

How do you pronounce Lake Bohinj?

The name is pronounced in a way closed to Bor-hin, with the h audible. But forget the j!

How to get to Lake Bohinj – Maps

Where is lake bohinj.

Bohinj is sometimes refered to as the lake at the end of the world, because it is niched in the heart of the Julian Alps with only one way in or out by car.

  • It is located on the West Part of the Country, just South West of Bled
  • Lake Bled to Lake Bohinj East = 30 min drive
  • Ljubljana to Bohinj East = 1h15 drive

Below is a map to help you locate Lake Bohinj:

Need to rent a car in Slovenia?

  • Compare prices on my favorite platform:   Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
  • Choose a car with enough power for the mountain roads
  • Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
  • Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!

How to get to Lake Bohinj

  • BY CAR – The easiest way to visit Lake Bohinj is to rent a car. This way you can travel around easily. Get to Bled, drive along Lake Bled and continue on 209 towards Bohinj. The road is large and in excellent condition. Easy driving. But know that carparks fill up fast in mid-Summer. Check out my guide about driving in Slovenia
  • BY BUS or TRAIN –  In terms of public transportation you can find busses connecting with Lake Bohinj but that really limits your movements – The closest train station is in Bohinjska Bistrica.
  • BY TOUR – If you are limited in time and staying either in Ljubljana or in Bled you can book an organized tour that will take you to both the Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj on the same day – check out program and Book

Lake Bohinj Travel Tips

How long to stay in bohinj.

You can visit on a day trip from Bled: enjoy the shore, hike to Savica Waterfall and take the Vogel Cable car. But I recommend you book at least one night to enjoy the peace of the lake in the evening and early morning. Plus, with 2 days you can do a little bit of hiking. See further in the article for the best things to do in Bohinj.

Lake Bohinj early morning

Don’t plan day trips to Slovenia from Bohinj

I love the area of Bohinj and you could do your whole vacation there. However, if you are looking to explore more of Slovenia, I don’t recommend staying at Lake Bohinj in Summer. The road between Bohinj and Bled can have a lot of traffic and it won’t help spending quiet holidays. In that case, I recommend staying 2 days in Lake Bohinj to enjoy the area and then go on a road trip or choose another base.

Get the Julian Alp Card (Bohinj Tourist Card)

If you are staying at least 2 nights in Bohinj and planning to visit many of the sites, you can purchase the Julian Alp Card (between April and October). The benefits are:

  • Free bus rides around Bohinj
  • Free parking in Bohinj
  • Free access to Savica, Mostinca, panoramic boat, museums…
  • Deals for activities

Ask your accommodation for it.

Walking Lake Bohinj Slovenia

Best time to visit Lake Bohinj

Bohinj is a great destination all year round. April to October you can enjoy the Summer activities with hiking and kayaking. And in Winter, you can enjoy the winter scenery with snow and go skiing.

Lake Bohinj in Winter

Lake Bohinj is also a great destination in winter for those who love skiing. Mount Vogel is a ski resort with 26km of slopes. Most accommodations in the area have facilities to handle your skiing equipment.

Where to stay – Lake Bohinj Accommodations

Where to stay at lake bohinj – towns / villages.

You have 4 options in regards to choosing where to stay around Lake Bohinj:

  • Stay at the East end of the Lake in the Towns of Ribcev Laz or Stara Fuzina . There is a large hotel and a great selection of guesthouses and apartments. The pros are that you have access to several restaurants and are very close to the lake.
  • Stay at the West End of Lake Bohinj in Ukanc – This is for those who don’t need all the facilities and just want peace and quiet
  • Stay at the bigger town Bohinja Bistrica – a little further east, this town has more facilities, but you are not right by the lake
  • Stay in Lake Bled and do day trips to Lake Bohinj – after all it is only 30 minutes away by car – Check out my suggested Bled accommodations in my Lake Bled Guide .

Lake Bohinj hotel

My selection of Accommodations at Lake Bohinj

My personal choice is to stay around Stara Fuzina so that you can enjoy the lake at sunrise and sunset. My second choice would have been Ukanc to be more isolated in nature.

Lake Bohinj Accommodations

Right by the shore is Hotel Jezero . It has the best location with views of the lake and/or mountains from the balconies.Modern rooms. It also offers a nice swimming pool for the days when the lake is too cold for a swim. Good choice at buffet-style breakfast.

Check out pictures and availability

Lake Bohinj Slovenia Accommodations

I personally stayed in a nice apartment (Apartments Kovačič) with 1 bedroom and a sofa bed. It is not the most modern, but it was clean, spacious and with an amazing view from the balcony (as you can see on my photo). Easy parking on property.

5min walk to the Lake shore.

Other suggestions of Lake Bohinj Hotels and Accommodations:

  • GOOD VALUE FOR LOCATION – Not far from the hotel are the TD Bohinj Apartments that enjoy a fantastic location. No views but good value for price – Check out photos and availability
  • HOSTEL – In the middle of the South Shore is Hostel Pod Voglom (near a bus stop, and very close to the lake) – check out photos and availability
  • UKANC BOUTIQUE – Enjoy the comfort and elegance of Vila Park B&B in a beautiful garden, all you need to relax – check out photos and availability
  • UKANC BUDGET – rooms and apartment 750m from the Lake’s west shore – Check out photos and availability
  • or Check out all the Best user-rated accommodations around Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj Camping

If you prefer camping, there is:

  • Camp Zlatorog Bohinj on the West end of the lake
  • Camp Danica in Bohinjska Bistrica (not right on the shore)

14 Best things to do in Bohinj

#1 – driving along the south shore and stopping at the lake bohinj beaches.

I think the best thing to do at Lake Bohinj is simply to drive around and enjoy the views from the shore. You can do the South shore by car and stop at different views (listed with GPS coordinates in  my eBook ). Or you can do it by bike.

Tour of Lake Bohinj Slovenia

#2 – Lake Bohinj Shore Walk

You can walk all around the lake. It is 12km and takes 3 to 4 hours depending on how often you stop. On the North shore, you are walking right by the lake as there are no constructions, the mountain starts climbing. However the hike on the South shore is less enjoyable. You walk on the other side of the road. They created an elevated pathway, which is better than just walking on the road, but it is not the best for the views. Don’t forget to cross the road at the carparks to enjoy views from the mid-lake beaches.

Even if the weather is not good, you should go out. The white views from Ukanc were splendid and it stopped raining right when we walked there! I could stay hour admiring the magnificence of the scenery of Lake Bohinj.

Ukanc viewpoint Lake Bohinj Slovenia

#3 – Watching sunrise

I also recommend getting up to admire the sunrise. You won’t see the very first light but when it gets over the tree line, it is serene. Plus, at this time there is nobody around

Sunrise at Lake Bohinj Slovenia

#4 – Meet Goldhorn / Zlatorog

By the side of the lake, you can see a statue of the famous Zlatorog a.k.a Goldhorn. It is a legendary creature and icon of the Triglav National Park. The creature, a white chamois with golden horns, is part of a fairy-tale passed down from generations. You can read the original story as written by Karel Dezman here .

The statue is located on the South East shore, not far from the bridge. But I must admit that the statue at  Lake Jasna has more impressive horns!

Golden Horn Statue Lake Bohinj Slovenia

#5 – Admire the Savica Waterfall

Another famous location around Lake Bohinj is the Savica Waterfall. It is located at the Western end, above Ukanc. You have to pay for parking and for entrance and then climb 550 steps to reach the viewing platform. On one side, you see the mountains and a little bit of the lake, and on the other the surprising slap Savica. It is an A-shaped waterfall that starts in the middle of the rock wall (from an underground river) and falls into an emerald pool. It is worth the climb.

For many more photos,  check out my article dedicated to the Savica Waterfall

Savica Waterfall

#6 – Kayak on Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj is really great for water sports. However, as I said before, the water is quite cold except during the summer peak. So, people enjoy it more kayaking or on boats. I really recommend kayaking to enjoy the serenity of the area and appreciate the mountains in all directions.

Kajak on Lake Bohinj

#7 – Visit St John the Baptist Church

Near the bridge at the East end of the lake, in Ribčev Laz, you can’t miss the very photogenic little church. It is really charming. It is called St John the Baptist. Take the time to enter to admire the frescoes. It dates back to before the 15th century.

Stara Fuzina - Ribcev Laz Lake Bohinj Slovenia

#8 – Get incredible views with the Vogel Cable Car (Lake Bohinj Cable Car)

One of my favorite activities at Lake Bohinj was riding the Vogel cable car. The ride is very steep and impressive, but you get wonderful views of the whole lake and the Julian Alps. On a clear day, you can see the Triangular-shaped Triglav summit stands out above the others. It was built in 2001 and enables you to get from 579m to 1535m elevation in just over 4 minutes. The average incline is 70%.

From there you can go hiking on the trails replacing the ski slopes in summer or you can pay extra to take the chairlift and get even higher. However I wish they had done a better platform with the views at the top of the Bohinj cable car ride.

Vogel Cable Car Slovenia

#9 – Lake Bohinj Hiking – Mostnica Gorge and more

Lake Bohinj is a fantastic place for hiking. There is a large choice of trails. Some easy and short or long treks to the summits of the National Park (including Triglav). I recommend heading to the tourist office to learn more about the different trails and get a Lake Bohinj walking map.

An easy one is the Mostnica Gorge, above Stara Fuzina. It is not as fascinating as the Vintgar gorge at Lake Bled but it offers some interesting features along the way and, contrary to Vintgar, you are not stuck against other tourists on a small trail LOL.

Mostnica Gorge

#10 – Swimming in Lake Bohinj

I think the best way to appreciate the lake is by kayak, as I mentioned before. However you can also swim in the Lake, depending on your level of resistance to cold. In Summer, no problems. But otherwise, it is a cold mountain lake.

Swim and Kayak on Lake BOhinj

#11 – Panoramic Boat

In the Summer Season, panoramic electric boats offer sailing experiences on the lake. If you don’t feel like rowing yourself, and want some explanations with your experience, this is a great option.

#12 – Fishing

Plus, there are lots of fishes, especially trouts, so you can rent a boat and go fishing! You can obtain a permit from the tourist office.

#13 – Mini rafting on Sava Bohinjka River

For intense rafting experiences, you should head to the Soca Valley on the other side of the Julian Alps. However, if you still want a water sport activity in Bohinj, there are opportunities for mini rafting on the river that goes from Lake Bohinj to Bohinjska Bistrica and then towards Bled. Learn more

#14 – Canyoning

If you are looking for more nature and adrenaline experience, why not try canyoning? Check out details and book

#1 Hop Aboard a Boat on Lake Bohinj

Electric Tourist Boat, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

The utterly beautiful lake in Bohinj is, naturally, the top feature of the area – and the best place to start your discovery of the region. That is why hopping aboard a boat, where you can take in the idyllic scenery from a unique perspective, tops our list of Things To Do Lake Bohinj!

The glacial Bohinjsko Jezero ranks as Slovenia’s largest natural lake. It measures nearly 2.5 miles in length and has a depth of up to 145 feet. The electric Bohinj Tourist Boat, which ferries passengers back and forth from Ribcev Laz on the east end of the lake to Ukanc on the west, offers sensational vistas of the surroundings.

Summer Sunset, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

During the 30-minute journey, passengers can listen to the fact-filled commentary – or simply savor the passing scenes. Tickets can be purchased at the point of boarding and are paid in cash; alternatively, visitors can buy tickets online. Adult one-way tickets cost €9 and the price for a roundtrip ticket is €14.

Fun Fact: The water in Lake Bohinj completely – and naturally – cycles out three times a year. Water enters the lake from Savica Stream on the west and exits it via Sava Bohnijka to the east. The natural flow keeps the lake water impeccably fresh. In fact, it’s so clean that Lake Bohinj water is considered potable outside of the peak summer season.

#2 See the Streaming Savica Waterfall

View of Waterfall Savica, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Hiking to Savica Falls is a must-do when visiting Lake Bohinj. The tumbling Bohinj waterfall, which flows in two streams, is a magnificent sight.

Flowing from an underground source, the water spills down the side of the cliff. The longest stream measures 255 feet, while the second stream drops 82 feet. The waterfall is the sole, continuous source of water that fills Lake Bohinj.

The Savica Falls are located on the west end of the lake near Ukanc. Travelers can drive, take a bus or hike to the Savica Hut, which marks the point of entry. From the hut, visitors climb about 500 stairs to the waterfall viewing platform.

The roundtrip Savica hike from the entrance takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Visitors hiking up from the lakeside in Ukanc should allow 2 to 3 hours for the roundtrip trek. Tickets are required for the Slovenia Slap Savica Waterfall viewpoint and cost €4.

#3 Ride the Lake Bohinj Cable Car

Vogel Cable Car, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Bohinj, Slovenia is to get an elevated view of the lake that also encompasses the Julian Alps and the encircling Triglav NP. The prime way to do it is via the Mount Vogel Cable Car ride.

From the Valley Station, it’s just a short 4.2 minute ride up the mountainside to the Vogel Ski Center ( Watch our video ). After taking in the spectacular scenic panorama, visitors can enjoy a drink or meal at the chalet restaurant.

Adventurous travelers spend hours tromping around the trails on the mountaintop. Short treks take as little as 45 minutes, while longer hikes from Vogel Ski Center can take 5-6 hours.

Whatever you choose to do, you’ll likely want to make the most of it, as Bohinj Vogel Cable Car prices are a bit steep. The roundtrip journey costs €30 for adults. A one-way ticket is only slightly less, at €22. Budget travelers can hike up to the summit for free!

#4 Hike Mostnica Gorge Trail

Clear Water in Mostnica Gorge, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

The Mostnica Gorge is one of the gorgeous natural attractions at Lake Bohinj. A crystal-clear stream flows through the deeply cut, narrow gorge – and the Voje Valley Trail follows alongside a lengthy section of it. Initially, the trail is enveloped in forest, but then emerges into open pastures. When it re-enters the forest, the trail continues to the Mostnica Waterfall.

Flowing Mostnica Waterfall, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

The roundtrip Mostnica Gorge hike to the waterfall begins in Stara Fuzina and takes about four hours to complete. That said, the trek is technically an out-and-back route along either side of the water, so hikers can opt to turn back at any point.

During the hike you’ll pass two lodges that serve food and drinks. The restaurants – Planinska koca na Vojah and Slap Voje Pavel Kozelj – provide a nice place to rest and fuel up on the trail. However, we opted to bring our own picnic lunch.

As hiking Mostnica Gorge is one of the top Lake Bohinj things to do, there is a fee to access the trail. The adult entry ticket is €4. We share more details and tips in our Guide to Lake Bohinj Hiking .

#5 Splash around Lake Bohinj

Group of Kayaks at Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

In the height of summer, the sun warms the frigid lake to a temperature of 71˚F, which is just warm enough for a refreshing swim. We preferred to slowly ease into the shallow water along the eastern shore. However, brave swimmers can plunge in from the end of the dock next to Kramar Restaurant.

Kids Playing in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

That said, Lake Bohinj swimming is only one way to enjoy the chilly waters. Visitors can partake in several fun lake activities – from kayaking to paddle boarding. You can even rent old-school row boats for a paddle around the lake. Shoreline rentals for a rowboat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard are available in both Ribcev Laz and Ukanc.

Swimming Platform, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

In addition to paddling and splashing around the water, simply enjoying the serene views is one of the top things to do at Lake Bohinj. We think that one of the best times to experience the lake is before the crowds arrive. In the early morning, visitors can find stillness and solitude at the lakeside. The low light and lack of people make mornings a great time to take photos, too!

#6 Visit St. John the Baptist Church and Stone Bridge

Exterior view of the famous St. John the Baptist Church Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Standing as symbol of Lake Bohinj, St. John the Baptist Church – or Cerkev Sv. Janeza Krstnika – dates to the 13th century. The iconic church, with its rising bell tower, sits on the eastern shore of the lake next to the famous Stone Bridge.

For a small fee (€3.50), visitors can step inside the Saint John the Baptist Church to see the beautifully decorated interior. The highlight is the ancient painted frescoes (look for the White Devil on Cain’s shoulder). For an additional fee, guests can climb the bell tower for nice views, as well.

The bucolic Stone Bridge straddles the Sava Bohnijka River. The arched bridge was built in 1926 and stands as a protected monument. The bridge and church together are one of the most photographed Lake Bohinj attractions.

Note that the bridge itself offers stunning lake views. It’s a favorite place to take lake photos – just be mindful when snapping pictures, as the bridge is still used for vehicular traffic.

#7 Discover the Alpine Dairy Museum

For most visitors, Lake Bohinj is a recreation destination – but for hundreds of years, shepherding the surrounding land has been a way of life. At the Alpine Dairy Museum in Stara Fuzina, visitors can learn about the mountain farming shepherds and the cheese-making process.

Exhibits in the small museum detail the culture of the farmers – including the houses they lived in and the tools they used to make dairy products. Signs are in English and the friendly staff happily provide further explanations.

While we wouldn’t necessarily consider the museum to be a Bohinj must-see sight, the Planšarski Muzej is certainly an interesting places to learn about Alpine living. The adult admission fee is €3.50 – and they offer a cost-saving combo ticket that includes other Bohinj museums.

#8 Explore the Region on the Scenic Bohinj Railway

Soca Valley Scenic Train Bridge, Slovenia

Built in the early 1900s to connect Jesenice, Slovenia to Trieste, Italy, the Bohinj Railway is an excellent way to see more of the area. The route traverses the Soca Valley, taking passengers through tunnels and across bridges.

Between Bohinjska Bistrica and the border town of Nova Gorica, the railroad passes through the 4-mile-long Bohinj Tunnel and runs parallel to beautiful blue rivers. The highlight of the ride is crossing Solkan Bridge, the longest stone arch bridge in the world. Watch the video highlights of our ride on the Bohinj Railway.

View of Soca Valley from the Scenic Train, Slovenia

The train ride is more about the journey than the destination, but there is one fun thing to see in Nova Gorica: Europe Square. Sitting just outside the train station, the Italian-Slovenian border runs through the middle of the square, so you can literally stand in two countries at once!

Travelers who want to ride the train from Bohinj Bistrica to Nova Gorica should allow about 5 hours for the journey. The ride itself takes about 1.5 hours each way – plus the 1.5 hours in Nova Gorica. To get to Bohinj Bistrica train station, visitors can catch a bus or drive. We share more detailed tips in our article, Riding the Famous Scenic Train in Slovenia .

#9 Snap a Photo with the Zlatorog Statue

Statue of the Zlatorog, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

The emblematic Zlatorog Statue on the southern shore of the lake is not to be missed! The mythical Zlatorog – or Golden Horn – is a legendary tale of a deer-like creature that lives on Mount Triglav.

Today, one of the top Lake Bohinj attractions is the Golden Horn Statue, that is perched atop a craggy rock and backdropped by wonderful views. The statue of Zlatorog can be reached via the Circumference Trail from Stone Bridge in just 3 minutes. Note that completing the entire Bohinj Lake Circumference Trail takes about 3-4 hours.

#10 Take a Trip to Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge

Mala Osojnica is for the Prime Views, Lake Bled, Slovenia

Iconic Lake Bled is just 15 miles northeast of Lake Bohinj, making it possible to visit both of the famous Slovenia lakes in a single day. Lake Bled is renowned for its enchanting island and cliff-topping castle. We suggest allowing enough time to hike to the Best Lake Bled Viewpoints .

When visiting Lake Bled, it’s also worthwhile to make a stop at nearby Vintgar Gorge . One of the best natural attractions in the region, the canyon is lined with wooden-planked walkways, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in more incredible nature.

Getting from Lake Bohinj to Lake Bled is fairly straightforward – as the direct route is an easy drive by car or a short bus ride. Use all our advice for What To Do in Lake Bled to plan your trip!

Where To Eat: Lake Bohinj Restaurants

Outdoor patio and restaurant near Vogel Ski Center in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

The restaurants at Lake Bohinj range from quick take-away spots (with options of cevapcici and pizzas) to gostilnas serving traditional Slovenian meals (typically grilled meats and pasta dishes). Many accommodations double as eateries and serve basic (and delicious) homecooked meals.

Bakeries offer a local specialty, burek, which is a pastry stuffed with meat or cheese that is filling enough for any meal. Our top picks for the best restaurants in Lake Bohinj are marked on our map below!

Rebcev Laz Restaurants

In Ribčev Laz, our favorite place to eat is Restavracija Kramar, which is situated directly on Lake Bohinj. They serve excellent pizzas, truffle pastas, grilled meat and fresh trout. Just be aware that it is cash-only.

Other recommended dining establishment near the lake in Ribcev Laz are Pod Skalco and Foksner. While not directly on the lake, these restaurants feature spacious patios, super views and fantastic food.

Ukanc Restaurants

In Ukanc, near the Electric Tourist Boat dock, Restaurant Ukanc offers a menu of pizzas, risotto and burgers at fair prices. More Ukanc Bohinj restaurants, like Planinski dom Savica (try the soup), can be found near the Slap Savacia Slovenia Waterfall entrance.

Places to Eat in Stara Fuzina

In Stara Fuzina, Gostilna in Picerija Pr’ Mihovc serves traditional fare. Try the local homemade dishes – like Kranjska Klobasa or Struklji – or any grilled meat specialties.

As previously mentioned, there are also two restaurants on the hike along the Mostnica Gorge, which both feel like remote mountain hut escapes.

Picnics at Lake Bohinj

One of the best ways to enjoy a meal at the lake is to prepare your own picnic! Gather supplies for the grocery store and then find a spot along the eastern shore to nosh and watch the sunset.

The local grocery chain, Mercator, has stores in both Ribcev Laz and Stara Fuzina. They sell picnic food items, like meat, cheese, bread, fruit, wine (and plastic cups!) so that travelers can easily plan a lakeside picnic.

Lake Bohinj Travel Tips

Green Kayak, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

We have shared our honest advice for what to do in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia, but we have a few travel tips that will help make planning your trip even easier.

When To Go to Bohinj

Flowers in the Fields near Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Lake Bohinj is beautiful year-round, but each season brings a very different experience. We believe the prime time to go to Lake Bohinj in late summer and early autumn when hiking, boating and swimming are all possible.

That said, if you are taking a wintertime Slovenia trip, Bohinj Lake is dazzling draped in a blanket of snow. Plus, visitors can go skiing at Vogel Mountain!

How Many Days in Bohinj?

Mixing of Blue and Green Water, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Deciding how many days to spend at Lake Bohinj is not that simple. Some travelers attempt to squeeze in a visit on a day trip from Ljubljana, but we feel the lake deserves longer than a single day. If at all possible, we suggest spending at least 3 days at Lake Bohinj.

Sample Lake Bohinj 3-Day Itinerary

With 3 days at Lake Bohinj, visitors can explore the varied landscapes, embark on numerous hikes, ride the cable car to Mt Vogel and enjoy the scenic train excursion.

Get your first glimpse of Lake Bohinj aboard the Electric Boat and ride from east to west. From the west end of the lake, hike up to Savica Falls. In the afternoon ride the cable car to Vogel mountaintop and hike back down to the waterfront for dinner.

Spend the morning hiking Mostnica Gorge to the waterfall. Bring along a picnic lunch or dine at one of the restaurants on the trail. In the early afternoon, visit the Alpine Dairy Museum. In the heat of the day, go for a refreshing swim in the lake or partake in another water activity, like paddle boarding. Enjoy a relaxing dinner on the waterfront at Restaurant Kramar.

Start the day with an energizing walk along the Bohinj circumference trail taking in the sweeping views from every angle – and stopping by the Zlatorog to snap some photos. Cross over Stone Bridge and see the frescoes inside the church. In the afternoon, take a trip to Lake Bled or ride to Italy on the scenic train.

Lake Bohinj Tourist Card

Tourist Guest Card, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

The cost of visiting the sights and attractions at Lake Bled can add up in a hurry. Guests can save money, however, with the Julian Alps Bohinj Card . Also called the Bohinj Mobility Card, the attractions pass provides free or discounted admission to the sights and activities on our list.

The 3-Day Bohinj Card costs €19 – with options to include public transit and parking. The one caveat is that the pass is only available to individuals and families staying two or more nights at Lake Bohinj.

Where To Stay at Bohinj

Stara Fuzina Village, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Travelers who opt to stay in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia can choose from a handful of hotels, guesthouses, hostels and campgrounds. Most accommodations are located within the main three Bohinj towns: Ribcev Laz, Stara Fuzina and Ukanc.

Ribcev Laz Accommodations

Ribcev Laz is the bustling town situated on the southeast corner of the lake. Staying in Ribcev Laz provides easy access to the lake, but it can feel slightly congested with traffic and day trippers.

Hotel Jezero is a premier Lake Bohinj hotel. It is practically located on the water – plus it has an outdoor swimming pool, an on-site restaurant and comfortable rooms.

Places to Stay in Stara Fuzina

Sobe Sign, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Stara Fuzina is a rural village at the northeast corner of the lake. Off the water, it is about a 15-minute walk along a path to the lake. That said, it’s a good place to find more affordable Lake Bohinj hotels and guesthouses.

For our trip, we stayed at Rooms Simon Ceklin in Stara Fuzina. The comfortable and affordable family-run guesthouse features a communal kitchen and shared bathroom in a quiet location with friendly owners.

Accommodations in Ukanc

Staying in Ukanc is ideal for those looking for private Bohinj cabins. There are several to choose from – but the top-rated ones book up early! Ukanc also has a campground for visitors interested in Lake Bohinj camping. Camp Bohinj offers the opportunity to sleep right by the lake.

Lake Bohinj Hostel

Budget travelers looking for a cheap place to stay (that doesn’t require a tent) should check availability at Pod Voglom . Located on the south side of the lake, it is the top hostel in Bohinj.

Getting To Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Old Signs for directions, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Lake Bohinj can be reached by train, bus or car. The Bohinjska Bistrica train station is located 4 miles from the lake. Buses drop off passengers right at the edge of the lake in Ribcev Laz. Travelers with a car can of course drive, but be aware that parking can be very limited in the high season and expensive if not included with your accommodations.

How To Get from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj

We believe the ideal way to travel from Ljubljana to Bohinj is by bus. Check the Lake Bohinj to Ljubljana bus schedule on Rome2Rio to plan your journey.

Organized Tours from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj

Horse and Buggy Transport, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

While getting from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj is fairly straightforward, there are organized tours for those who would rather leave the specifics to someone else. One the best one-day Ljubljana tours include a visit to Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled. Consider these highly-rated tours: Bled and Bohinj Valley Tour and Alpine Region Day Trip .

Which is Better: Bled or Bohinj?

Old School Row Boat, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Travelers who only have time to visit one Slovenia lake have a tough decision to make: Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj. In our opinion, Lake Bohinj is uncomplicated and raw. It’s all about fresh air, clean water, green forests, towering mountains and wide pastures. Lake Bohinj is a natural beauty, existing exactly as created.

Girls relaxing on Pier, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Meanwhile, the beauty of Lake Bled is enhanced by man-made embellishments. It’s famous island is more beautiful because of the lone church and bell tower that occupy it. The castle perched on the edge of the cliff creates a dramatic scene. Posh restaurants and a modern casino entertain guests along the lakeside.

Therefore, it’s really a personal preference. Both lakes are exquisite, but Lake Bohinj does it more naturally.

If I had to pick a favourite place that I’ve visited in Slovenia, it would be Lake Bohinj. As Slovenia’s largest lake, it often gets outshined by picture-perfect Bled, however, there are so many things to do in Bohinj that it is very much worth dedicating at least one full day to visiting this beautiful Alpine lake.

Planning to spend one day in Bohinj or simply going for a day trip from Ljubljana or another nearby city is one of the best choices you can make during your trip to Slovenia.

Much quieter and more peaceful than the more popular Lake Bled , Bohinj has just as much to offer and is surrounded by the incredible nature of the Julian Alps.

No matter how long you have to spend here, you’re sure to be immediately taken by the beauty and tranquillity of Lake Bohinj.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Bohinj?

Like so many places in the world, if you have the time I would definitely recommend spending as long as you can in Bohinj as it really is worth it.

You will see a lot of day tours and even itineraries that include a visit to Bohinj in the same day as visiting places like Lake Bled and other attractions in Triglav National Park.

While this can be a fine option if you’re only interested in a quick pitstop before moving on, it won’t give you nearly enough time to really enjoy this lake.

While there is a lot to do near Bohinj, if you simply want to visit the lake and a few attractions nearby, then you should plan to spend at least one full day at Lake Bohinj.

This way you can get to really enjoy the atmosphere of the lake itself and visit some nearby natural sites like the Savica Waterfall and the Mostnica Gorge.

Peaceful Lake Bohinj

Getting To and Around Bohinj

Whether you’re planning on staying near Lake Bohinj, are based in Ljubljana or are resting your head elsewhere in Slovenia, you still need to figure out how to get to the lake and how to get around when you’re there.

The by far easiest and most convenient way to get to and around is by personal vehicle. Having your own car in Bohinj can make getting from point A to B on your own schedule an absolute breeze.

There are lots of places to park in Bohinj (prices can vary depending on the season) but it is best to get where you want to go early just to make sure you get a good spot, especially in the summer months.

If you need to a rent a car for this trip, browse Rentalcars.com which shows the best options across major suppliers.

Driving in Bohinj

If you don’t have a car, there are lots of bus options to Lake Bohinj from Ljubljana. It is worth noting, however, that when taking the bus it may be more difficult to also get to the other things mentioned on this Bohinj itinerary, namely the Savica Waterfall and the Mostnica Gorge.

Once in Bohinj proper, you can get to most places by foot (there are a lot of hiking opportunities!) but if you don’t have a car, you will be walking or more reliant on other forms of transport more than if you have your own vehicle.

If you are planning on relying on your own two feet, you will be pleased to find out that most everything is incredibly well signposted and you will be able to find where you are going with relative ease!

Another popular way to get to and around Bohinj is by taking an organised tour. Most day tours from Ljubljana unfortunately don’t spend as much time in Bohinj as would be preferable and cram a bunch of other attractions around Slovenia into one day.

However, if you can’t decide whether to visit Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj , this full-day tour or this full-day tour will take you to both of these lakes over the span of the day!

Mostnica Gorge

Things To Do In Bohinj: A One-Day Itinerary

Savica waterfall.

The first stop on any Bohinj itinerary should be at the Savica Waterfall. Located on the western side of Lake Bohinj, we recommend getting here as early as possible as this is a really popular spot.

The car park can fill up if you get there later in the day and the actual area where visitors can view the waterfall is very small, so it’s best to get there when as few people as possible have arrived to get the best views.

Parking is €5 per vehicle and the entrance fee into the waterfall is €3-4 depending on the season.

There is a well-paved pathway up to the waterfall that takes about 20-25 minutes. It’s worth noting that the pathway is incredibly well maintained but it is relatively steep and consists of mostly stairs, so a moderate level of fitness and mobility is required.

The waterfall itself is absolutely beautiful, but the views of the surrounding Bohinj Valley are worth the hike up there in and of itself are worth the trip.

Savica Waterfall

Mostnica Gorge

Located just east of Lake Bohinj a bit outside of the village of Stara Fuzina, this is another place to visit that you want to get to early.

I say this from experience because the first time we tried to go to the Mostnica Gorge, the car park was completely full and there was nowhere to park at all within the village.

However, when we got there in the morning on another day, we had no problem finding a place to park and didn’t have large crowds to contend with on the trail.

The Julian Alps region of Slovenia has countless river gorges to visit — the most famous being the Vintgar Gorge near Lake Bled. However, Vintgar Gorge gets incredibly busy and popular and if you’re looking for a more mellow experience, then the Mostnica Gorge is a great option.

Not as developed as Vintgar, Mostnica is absolutely beautiful and well worth the visit. The price to park is €3 per hour and the entry into the gorge is €3-4 per person depending on when you visit.

There is a very well-marked trail that takes you along the gorge and it is a very easy walk. There are plenty of side trails where you can get right to the edge of the gorge and take some beautiful photos.

The walk along Mostnica Gorge takes about 45 minutes one way and you can walk along the other side of the gorge on the way back. If you’re up for a longer and more difficult hike, you can continue on from the gorge to another waterfall that is about 1.5 hours away.

Little Elephant rock formation in Mostnica Gorge

Church of St John the Baptist

After visiting the Mostnica Gorge, it’s time to head finally to Lake Bohinj itself! And the first stop and one of the best things to do on a trip to Lake Bohinj is to visit the lovely Church of St John the Baptist.

Located on the east end of the Lake just across the lovely little bridge, this church is an iconic part of the skyline of Bohinj.

You can opt to simply take in the view of the church from the outside or you can go inside and view its lovely frescoes and historic atmosphere. If you do want to go inside the church and view the frescoes and interior, entry is €3.50 per person.

Walk Along the Lake

After visiting the Church of St John the Baptist, take the time to really take in the beauty of Bohinj and go for a leisurely stroll along the lake shore.

Bohinj is quite a bit larger than Lake Bled and it would take a fair bit of time to circumnavigate the entire lake, however, it is worth walking along at least a bit of the lakeside.

There is a well-maintained path along the banks of the lake and lots of little beachy areas where you can stop off at and put your feet in the water.

The views of the lake and the surrounding mountains are absolutely unbeatable and it’s very worth taking the time to go on at least a little bit of a walk!

Lovely bridge across Lake Bohinj

Get onto the Water

One of the absolutely best things to do in Bohinj (especially if you’re visiting in the summer months) is to get out on the lake. Depending on how active you want to be, there are lots of opportunities to rent everything from a stand-up paddleboard to a rowboat to a canoe.

We opted to rent a canoe for a couple of hours from AlpinSport , which is located only a bit away from the Church of St John the Baptist. You don’t need to book anything in advance and if you feel like renting a boat or paddleboard, you can just show up at the office.

The cost for a canoe rental started at €12 per hour, however, the per-hour cost decreases the longer you have your boat. For instance, we had our canoe for 2 hours and only ended up paying €16 for the whole time.

If you want to be a bit more adventurous, you can also opt to go for a canyoning or rafting tour from Bohinj, as well!

Canoes on Lake Bohinj

Take in the View

If you’re not too tired after a full day enjoying all of the great things to do in Bohinj, you can opt to do one more stop to round out your day — take the cable car up to the Vogel ski resort just above the lake.

In the winter, this is a ski lift that takes you to the slopes so you can enjoy some winter sports. But in the warmer months, you can use the cable car to get to the top of the mountain and take in the amazing viewpoint.

The cable car leaves from the southwest end of the lake and there are discounts available for students, seniors and children. If you’re keen to do even a bit more hiking, there are several hiking trails around here that you can embark on if that interests you.

Have More Time?

If you have more than one day to spend in Bohinj, there are lots of things you can do to keep yourself occupied. For instance, there are countless longer hikes that you will have the opportunity to do if you have the time.

Bohinj also makes for a great base for exploring more of the Julian Alps region of Slovenia and Triglav National Park. With more time around Bohinj, it makes for a great jumping-off point to drive the Vrsic Pass , explore the Soca Valley, or even spend a bit of time in Lake Bled, as well.

If you’re interested in cycling, which is a national pastime in Slovenia, you can opt to go on this 4-hour bike tour from Bled to Bohinj that will take you through all of the beautiful nature surrounding this incredible region of the country.

I wanted to put together this guide to Lake Bohinj in Slovenia because I had a fantastic time visiting and it’s such a hidden gem compared to Lake Bled. I understand why so many travellers only add Ljubljana and Lake Bled to their Slovenia itinerary . These are the most popular places to visit in the country and for good reason! But Lake Bled can be insanely crowded and busy these days, with accommodation costing crazy amounts, booked up months in advance! To spread tourism around, it’s always a good idea to visit a country’s ‘second’ destination or, in this case, second lake town. In my opinion, Lake Bohinj is just as beautiful as Bled (although admittedly lacking a scenic church you can row around), but much cheaper and quieter.

Where is Lake Bohinj?

map lake bohinj slovenia

Lake Bohinj is in the Upper Carniola region of northwest Slovenia, close to Lake Bled and not far from the capital, Ljubljana. Bordered by the Triglav mountain range and Triglav National Park, it benefits from spectacular surroundings. Bohinj is the municipality but people are usually referring to the lake, Bohinj Jezero (jezero means lake in Slovenian). Unlike Bled where the town and lake have the same name, there’s no Bohinj town: the main lakeside settlement is Ribčev Laz .

Getting to Lake Bohinj

Getting from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj: the drive takes around 1 hour 30 minutes along the A2/E61 highway. Alternatively, catch a bus from Ljubljana’s main bus station . Getting from Lake Bled to Lake Bohinj: the drive takes around 30 minutes or you can catch a local bus. I noticed that the bus there cost €5 and on the way back it cost €1! I believe this is due to different bus companies but it struck me as a big difference. Arriva buses are the main local operator in Slovenia. Parking: You can only park in designated areas (or at your accommodation); there’s a board at the entrance to Ribčev Laz which tells you where and the remaining capacity. There are also Park and Ride facilities in Strednja vas and Bohinjska Bistrica where you can park and take a free shuttle bus to the lake.

Getting around Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Walk – this is the option I took as I visited without a car slightly out of peak season when shuttles weren’t running. I took some VERY long walks but it was ok – exploring on foot and soaking up the scenery is one of the best things to do in Lake Bohinj! Drive – many visitors arrive with a car (I suggest Rentalcars.com for hiring vehicles in Slovenia) which is useful when reaching out-of-town attractions and the starting points of numerous hikes. Shuttle bus – from July to September, there are FREE shuttle buses travelling around Bohinj and to nearby destinations like Triglav National Park. There are 9 regular routes running. If you’re driving, you can still benefit from these by parking at one of the Park and Rides and getting a shuttle to the lake. Panoramic boat – this will take you from one side of the lake to the other.

Can you visit as a day trip / how long to spend in Bohinj?

You can, and lots of people do. Personally, I preferred to stay overnight as there are quite a few things to do in Bohinj and I think you’d be hard pushed to see them in a day. If you do want to visit as a day trip, it’s advisable (although not essential) to do so by car so you can see as much as possible. The attractions near Lake Bohinj are fairly spread out.

Lake shores

Visiting as a day trip by bus?

Rather than getting off in Ribčev Laz town, you could stay on the bus to the final stop of Ukanc . From here, you can ride Vogel Cable Car OR begin the hike to Savica Waterfall. If you disembark in Ribčev Laz, you’ll have to walk for almost an hour, take the scenic boat, or board a bus to reach these Bohinj attractions. So you may as well stay on the original bus. Then, you only have to navigate one journey back to Ribčev Laz.

When is the best time to visit Bohinj?

The summer months (June-August) are your best bet for good weather if you’re hoping to soak up the sun and swim in the lake. Of course, these months are the most expensive and crowded time to visit… But still nothing compared to Bled! Shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and autumn (September-October) are also good times to visit with cheaper prices and fewer people around. Winter (November-February) is rainy and cold with many things closed for the season. Boats across the lake don’t run from November to March. However, you should note that the weather is unpredictable around these lake towns. In May in Bled, I had the most sublime weather ever. The next day in Lake Bohinj, it was cloudy and misty. I couldn’t belive how fast it changed! At first, I was disappointed but soon realised how mysterious and intriguing the lake looks in bad weather.

Where to stay in Lake Bohinj

Budget – I stayed at Hostel Pod Voglom which is the only hostel in town and a bargain at €16 for a private room. Check availability on Booking.com . Mid-range hotel – stay at Bohinj Eco Hotel for 4* peace and comfort, views of the Julian Alps and access to the wellness resort. Check availability from €100 . Splash-out hotel – the newly renovated Hotel Bohinj is just 100m from the lake with panoramic views of the water and mountains. Expect an upscale alpine theme, restaurant, swimming pool and evening entertainment like cooking demos. Check availability from €300 . Apartment – if you’d rather stay in a cosy apartment, check out Cvetek Apartment in Ribčev Laz. If you don’t mind a 10-minute drive, there are bargains to be had nearby such as Apartment House Jager .

Things to do in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Most of the activities in Bohinj revolve around the lake and hiking, as you might expect for such a naturally beautiful destination. These include…

Take a scenic boat ride on the lake

Scenic boat ride lake bohinj slovenia

The Panoramic boat station by the main bridge in Ribčev Laz is where to board a boat trip across the lake. It travels to Ukanc on the other side of the lake (otherwise an hour’s walk or a bus ride away) where you can begin the Savica Waterfall hike or ride the Vogel Cable Car. You can opt to get the boat one way (€9) or return (€14). There are discounts for children, pupils, seniors etc (see the website for exact prices and timetables). The ride takes 25 minutes with spectacular views the whole way. The other option is hiring a wooden rowing boat at the same location. I can’t promise you’ll make it across the whole lake but it’s a fun way to while away a summer’s afternoon.

Info about Bohinj Jezero

  • The lake basin was formed by ancient glaciers
  • Temperatures range from 24°C at the surface in summer to freezing in winter
  • It reaches depths of 45m
  • The total shore length is 11 miles
  • There are 16 species of fish in the lake.

Walk around the lake

lake bohinj things to do walk

This is a nice activity if you have time. But note that only the northern shore of Lake Bohinj is particularly scenic. The main road is on the other side so you’ll be walking beside it the whole time. In contrast, the northern bank has a simple footpath and no road. The walk should talk around 1 hour depending on your speed and how often you stop to admire the view and take photos. For me, this was every 2 minutes! Another option is hiring an e-bike and cycling around the lake. A reputable place to borrow them is Alpinsports at the head of the lake.

Hike to Savica Waterfall

Waterfall bohinj slovenia itinerary

Hiking to Savica Waterfall is one of the best things to do near Lake Bohinj, firstly because it’s beautiful and secondly because the hike there is equally gorgeous. There are several options depending on how long you want to hike. I took a slightly insane option and walked from Ribčev Laz which took about 4 hours return.

Starting from the parking area

The shortest hike option departs from the parking at Slap Savica and takes a short 20-minute hike to the waterfall. The path is clearly marked and the hike isn’t too hard, although you’ll have to climb around 500 stairs. At the parking area, there are toilets and a restaurant. Parking costs €4 for 3 hours or €8 for the day. There’s also a bus from runs from June-September connecting the town with the parking area.

Starting from Ukanc

For a medium hike option of around an hour, start from Ukanc where the scenic boat ride (or local bus) drops you. This is a lovely walk of around 2.5 miles / 4km through the Slovenian countryside with the gorgeous Zlatorog fairy trail to follow. It took me around 1 hour to walk between Ukanc and the Slap Savica parking area.

Scenery slovenia

Visitors info

The 78m cascade is a karst spring that’s filtered its way through the rock wall. It thunders down the cliff face beside a small viewing platform. You can’t swim or go right up to it, just view it. Entry to the falls costs €3 for adults and €1.50 for kids (free for under 7s) in low season, and €4 / €2 from June-Sept.

Savica waterfall

In peak season, the best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to beat the crowds. There’s just one path with a few sections of staircase so it can get quite crowded I hear. Luckily, during my visit on a misty day in May, it was quiet even in the middle of the day.

Hike in Mostinca Gorge

Mostinca gorge bohinj slovenia

The other popular place to hike in Lake Bohinj is beside Mostinca Gorge . Regardless of the weather, this nature reserve is a lovely place to take a walk because it’s shaded by a forest canopy which protects you from sun and rain. The powerful river cutting through the rock face keeps the area lush and green, similar to the better-known Vintgar Gorge near Bled but MUCH quieter. The weather was pretty bad the day I went to Mostinca but it was still a great walk. Perhaps because of the weather, the ticket desk where you’re meant to pay €3 entry (€4 in summer) was unmanned so I got a free visit. Every little helps for a budget backpacker! Getting there: the start point is a 10-minute drive from Ribčev Laz close to the little settlement of Stara Fužina . Because I was visiting solo sans car, I walked there which took about 45 minutes from Ribčev Laz. My daily step count was on FIRE during my Lake Bohinj trip! If you start in Stara Fužina, check out the Gorge and head back, you can expect to spend around 2.5 hours total. Walk up on the right, and down on the left side so you see both sides. Parking costs around €3 an hour, and the parking area is about 15 minutes on foot to the gorge.

Ride Vogel Cable Car

Vogel cable car lake bohinj attractions

Easily the best place to visit in Bohinj (and possibly all of Slovenia) for panoramic views is Vogel Cable Car . In the winter, it transports skiers to Vogel Ski Centre in just 4 minutes and, in the summer, it takes tourists to the amazing viewing platform. At the top station, there’s a cafe where you can sit with a coffee and admire the views. It’s also the starting point of several hiking trails such as the Mount Vogel trail reaching 1922m. To reach these higher points, take Orlove Glave Chairlift, included in your cable car ticket. Other adrenaline-inducing activities from the top include a scenic zip wire ride, mountain biking and paragliding! Getting there : drive, take a bus or board the scenic boat cruise to Ukanc. There’s a small parking area that doesn’t accommodate all the people who visit in peak season, but you can park along the road nearby. Info: the cable car operates every 30 minutes from 8am-6pm in peak season and until 4pm in low season. The return ride costs €29 return for adults and €15 for children. It’s €22 for a one-way ticket for those who want to try hiking up or down but, be warned, this is a very steep journey.

Planinska koca na Vojah (mountain hut)

mountain tea hiking

This is a little-known place visit in Lake Bohinj that I stumbled across by accident after hiking in Mostinca Gorge. It’s a mountain cabin where you can stay overnight or visit simply for food, a beer or a cup of tea after hiking. The appeal of visiting? The incredible views of the valley behind. This was some of the most spectacular scenery I saw in all of Slovenia. I didn’t get amazing photos because cloud kept creeping across the valley but, every time it cleared, I was in awe! I sipped mountain tea made with famous Slovenian honey and enjoyed the views before hiking back to town. Find the cabin pinned here . To get there, I hiked through Mostinca Gorge along Stara Fuzina then took this footpath pinned which ended at the cabin. It was an accidental find but a very good one!

Swim in Lake Bohinj

Although the misty and mysterious weather made my trip highly scenic, it was sadly not swimming weather! The best time to swim in Lake Bohinj is from June to September. If this timing coincides with your trip and you’re blessed with a sunny day, one of the best things to do in Bohinj is take a refreshing dip. The best bits? The lake is so clean that the waters are crystal clear! Also, there are no motorised boats allowed on the lake so you swim unbothered. The ultimate place to swim is the banks of Ukanc where the lake joins the river. Alternatively, join the crowds swimming from the eastern shore near Ribčev Laz.

Watersports on Lake Bohinj

To make the most of the gorgeous lake in the summer months, try your hand at some watersports. Options include:

  • Stand-up paddle boarding

To hire boats and explore the lake (either solo or with a guide), head to Alpinsport at the head of the lake in Ribčev Laz. For kayaks and canoes, you can expect to pay around €12 an hour or €25 for 4 hours. Another activity on Lake Bohinj is fishing.

See the sights of Ribčev Laz

When visiting Lake Bohinj in Slovenia, you’re likely to pass through Ribčev Laz because it’s the main town in the region. If you’re staying overnight, it’s most likely to be here. There isn’t loads to do but there are a few places for sightseeing. These are…

The Goldenhorn statue

Goldenhorn statue lake bohinj slovenia

One of the most iconic places in Bohinj to snap a photo is the statue of the goldenhorn ( zlatorog in the local tongue) at the head of the lake near the boat house. The zlatorog is a popular creature in Slovenian mythology, resembling the Alpine ibex which can still be spotted in the mountains of Mt. Triglav today.

Church of St John the Baptist

John the baptist church

The Church of St John the Baptist (Cerkev Sv. Janeza Krstnika) is the main church in the little settlement beside the old stone bridge. With over 700 years of history, the church boasts some of the oldest frescos in Slovenia. One curious thing is that the painter of the John the Baptist fresco painted him with 6 toes on one foot. See if you can spot it! Another notable feature is the musical Baroque bell tower, thought to be the first of its kind in the world. It plays the Slovenian melody, Oj, Triglav, my home .

Four Courageous Men statue

Memorial statue

Another notable feature of Ribčev Laz town is the memorial statue dedicated to the Four Courageous Men who were the first people to climb 2,864m Mount Triglav .

More hikes near Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Scenery near lake bohinj

If you didn’t have your fill hiking at Savika Waterfall and Mostinca Gorge, there are several other scenic hikes in Bohinj which include… Hiking to Viewpoint Rudnica : this 30-minute hike isn’t too difficult but provides some of the best views of the lake. It starts near the church in Ribčev Laz and ascends up Stara Fužina, passing through forest and pastures before arriving at a clearing with unobscured lake views. It may not be as high as Vogel but you get to see a fresh perspective of the lake from a different angle. Hiking to Bohinj Alpine Pastures : the misty elevated pastures of Fuzina Hills (Fužinarske planine) are idyllic, dotted with shepherds’ huts and grazing cows in summer. Don’t miss the chance to sample fresh alpine cheese! To hike between 6 cheese dairies with subline views, it’s best to arrive early before the parking spaces fill up. There’s a €15 fee to pay on the toll road. Triglav Lakes Valley Hike : if you hike this ancient glacial valley in the Julian Alps home to seven lakes, you’ll be rewarded with some of Europe’s finest scenery. The 15km circular route of medium difficulty takes around 6 hours, beginning and ending at Planina Blato.

Where to eat and drink in Bohinj, Slovenia

For once, I don’t have too many recommendations because I mainly made my own food in Bohinj. My friend and I had grazed our way around the many, many Ljubljana restaurants and spent hundreds of Euros, so my bank balance needed a few homemade cheese sandwiches! Still here are a few places I hear good things about:

  • Foksner – this is easily one of the most popular restaurants in town known for hearty burgers, tiramisu and craft beer. They also have veggie options like pasta, salads and sandwiches. It’s busy so you may want to arrive early in high season.
  • Karakter Bar – this is another place for hearty eats after hiking such as burgers and fries. There are also salads and veggie options if you’re not looking to indulge. Don’t miss their homemade gin!
  • Center Restaurant Bohinj – pizzas, salads and other comfort foods in a cosy, old-fashioned restaurant.

Thoughts on visiting Lake Bohinj solo

I travel a lot solo (that’s basically the point of this blog ) so I was in Bohinj alone. Unlike Ljubljana and Bled which are social destinations with more tourist infrastructure, Lake Bohinj felt quiet and sleepy. I spent two days in Bohinj and didn’t talk to anyone, something that can occasionally happen during solo travel. After a busy and social few weeks previously exploring all the things to do in Ljubljana with a friend, then staying in a social hostel in Bled , I didn’t really mind and focussed on enjoying me-time, soaking up nature, and reading my book. It can be nice to disconnect from time to time! Just something to keep in mind if you’re travelling alone. If it’s your first time travelling solo or you prefer visiting more social destinations, you may feel a bit isolated in Bohinj.

Thanks for reading!

I hope you enjoyed this Lake Bohinj travel guide. It’s such an underrated, beautiful corner of Slovenia so don’t miss it!
