The Pangasinan Provincial Capitol, on Lingayen Gulf, is the present seat of the government of Pangasinan. It was declared as one of the eight Architectural Treasures of the Philippines by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Governor Juan Rodriguez conceived the idea of an official residence under his administration, especially since Governors before him came from different parts of the province. In order to ease travel, he commissioned a governor’s mansion across the Pangasinan Provincial Capitol he promptly named “Urduja Palace,” named after the legendary Urduja, a princess of Tawilisi, said to be located in the present-day Pangasinan. It was officially named “Urduja House” as a simplication since it was too small to be a palace.

Bolinao Falls is a series of three waterfalls hidden amidst the lush greenery in the town of Bolinao, Pangasinan. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, picnicking, and appreciating the beauty of the countryside.

The first waterfall features the highest water cascade at about 20 feet. Here you can swim, cliff jump, and enjoy the sun while lying down in a bamboo raft. For those with children, the second waterfall is more accessible, with a wide basin and deep pools for swimming. The third one is a combination of the two — with a wide basin for swimming and high cliffs for cliff diving and jumping.

Enchanted Cave is perhaps one of the most unique attractions in Pangasinan. It features a cave with a crystal-clear underground pool, beautifully lit, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Swim and snorkel to explore the cave’s mysterious chambers.

Complete your beach hopping tour in Pangasinan and visit Panacalan Island in the town of Anda.

Similar to Tondol Beach, Panacalan Island features a white-sand beach and a sand bar, which changes shape depending on the season (similar to Higatangan Island in Biliran ). The waters around the island are protected and makes for great snorkeling. You can spot fishes, starfishes, sea urchins, and other species.

Another historical gem, Bolinao Church (or St. James the Great Parish Church) features beautiful Spanish-colonial architecture and heritage. It was constructed in the late 16th century in dedication to St. James the Great, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. The church is made of black corals and has since survived various natural and man-made calamities.

Want to visit a flower farm? Then check out the Sunflower Farm at Tayug Eco-Park in the town of Tayug, Pangasinan.

This sunflower farm is considered the first of its kind in the Philippines. Located in a 3-hectare property in the middle of rice fields, the farm features beautiful sunflower plants that bloom in the summer season and other ornamental and edible plants. There are also other photo spots where you can take snaps for the gram. Since you’ll be walking around an open area, make sure to bring sunscreen and water.

The Sky Plaza is one of the hidden gems of Pangasinan. While it is not that well known outside of the province, it is a favorite destination among locals as a pilgrimage and nature site.

The park is located atop a hill in the town of Natividad, offering a pleasant view of its surrounding mountains and valleys. Within the park, you can find a grotto of the Virgin Mary, a large 30-foot Holy Cross, and a 40-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer (also called “Ayat ni Apo Jesus” or God’s Love).

There are also picnic areas, hiking trails, and a zipline where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the area.

Aside from beaches, Pangasinan is also home to several waterfalls where you can swim and cool off especially during the summer.

Found in the town of Natividad, Maranum Falls is a beautiful stream with a wide basin. Its name is derived from the Ilokano word “maranum,” which means many waters. Indeed, the water at Maranum Falls does not dry out even on the summer months. Getting here is a short 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot. To preserve the cleanliness of the waterfall, food and other items such as cigarettes are not allowed to be brought in. However, you can bring water with you.

Farmcradle is an agritourism site located in Balungao, Pangasinan. It’s a farm facility ideal for families and kids — here you can visit various types of farm animals, including chickens, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, ostrich, camels, and rabbits.

For history lovers, one of the best things to do in Pangasinan is doing a heritage tour at its capital city — Lingayen.

10 Places to Visit in Lingayen and Calasiao in a Day

After the wedding of our very good friend in Lingayen we spare no time to tour the stunning town of Lingayen and its nearby town Calasiao. We wanted to go to Bolinao or Alaminos but found it too far to catch the last trip of Victory Liner bound to Manila. We haven’t planned of the sites to visit when we stepped on this town. Thankfully we saw a brochure by the local tourism office and found some interesting places to visit. We already visited the Capitol Building and Maramba Boulevard on the evening of our friend’s wedding. We just decided to skip it in the morning and comeback to it if ever we have time in the afternoon. 1. Maramba Boulevard

4. Ramos House Our first stop that day was the replica of Ramos House. Just located at the back of our home in Lingayen – The President Hotel – we gain a lot of insight about the childhood of 12th President of the Republic of the Philippines – President Fidel V. Ramos. Like all ancestral houses in the Philippines – which by the way I love – Ramos House is flourished by fine wood and made homey by antique and modern furniture.

At the time of visit, Ramos House do not collect fees nor donations. Downside is one has to make an appointment with the tourism office in the Capitol or Urduja House. We were blessed at the time of our visit because the caretaker of the house opened it for us even though it’s a Sunday and she just came from church. She enthusiastically toured us around pointing each interesting piece with a little trivia and history. She added that Pres. Ramos will soon visit the house to add more pieces and convert it into a museum.

5. Bagoong Factory

We hit the tricycle to see how the famous delicacy of Pangasinan is created. Honestly, I am not a fan of Bagoong of any kind. I just wanted to see how this thing is created. Although I don’t eat bagoong I bought some bottles of it including the Patis (fish sauce) and salt for present at home. The prices are very cheap. I paid Php90 for all the stuff that I bought.

6. St. Peter and Paul Parish Church Calasiao

I fell in love with this church. St. Peter and Paul Parish Church is beautiful inside and out. This is one of the two churches where I will marry my better half. One is in Fuerza de Sta. Isabel in Taytay Palawan .

7. Puto Calasiao (Rice Cake)

Filipinos loves Puto (rice cake). Almost every province in the archipelago has a version of Puto. But Puto Calasiao is definitely one of the best. From the plain flavor to cheese, pandan and other flavors your Calasiao experience will not be complete without bringing home a bag of Puto Calasiao. Puto Calasiao cost Php100 per kilo.

8. Urduja House

Urduja House is where the Governor of Pangasinan lives. Its like their provincial version of Malacanang. Special meetings is also conducted here. The House is open to the public free of charge.

9. Lingayen Beach

One should not forget Lingayen beach . For me this is what a public beach is. Wide, clean, without structures, fine sand and most of all free!

The waves are so fine with sand boarding enthusiast loving the water. There are vendors selling different kinds of food too. So your tummy will be happy if ever you only got your board shorts and sun blocked cream.

10. Old Structures in Downtown Lingayen My visit to any place would be complete without strolling in the downtown and observe its commerce and structures. The commerce evident in the downtown is the window to what kind of life the locals have. Structures on the other hand talks of the history of the town if only they are preserved by the locals and authorities.

Lingayen is the capital of Pangasinan Province yet the town is laid back and calm. I like that, its my kind of province. A Jollibee and some famous local food chain are the only glimpse of a growing economy aside from the big local banks in the downtown. What thrilled me is the presence of Video City – VCD/DVD rental shop – which I think died in Metro Manila years ago.

When it comes to bus transportation I only trust the one that is tested by time and has the credibility to move passengers safely and comfortably. Whenever I go north Victory Liner is my choice. Aside from the assurance of safety – not to mention the insurance worth Php5.00 for each passenger – the comfort that it gives to passengers is superb.

The bus that we took from Lingayen to Manila was new (lucky us) and smells so fresh. I like the fact that the seat has a head rest aside from the functional reclining seats. With these the 5 hours Lingayen – Manila journey was enjoyable and comfortable. The Augustinian missionaries and the Spanish conquistadores drew a plan of Lingayen in 1614 and Lingayen was founded. The founders named the town Lingayen at the suggestion of natives themselves, due to a certain corpulent tamarind tree growing on the present town plaza at that time. The tree was exceptionally big, tall, and spreading; that the surrounding trees were just drafts in comparison. Passers-by developed the habit of looking back and back again at this corpulent tree until it would vanish from their rear view. When they arrived home and were asked what way they took in returning they would simply say “through Liñgayen”. The word “Liñgayen” was from the Pangasinan language word “lingawen” meaning ” to look back”. Since then up to the present time the town bears its name as Lingayen.

Lingayen became the capital of Pangasinan when the province became an encomienda.

During World War II, Lingayen was where the Allied armies landed during the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf. Its long beach served as runway for several attack planes.

The area is also a fishing center for shells, oysters, sea and fresh water fish, squids, and other succulent seafood in Pangasinan. Lingayen is also known for its specialty sauce which is the Lingayen Bagoong. It is a favorite sauce by both locals and tourists.

The Lingayen Gulf and its whole municipality had been one of the strategic points used during World War II. The long beach served as the landing strip of numerous attack planes. The area where the beach facilities are now established was one of the landing areas of the American Forces that paved way for the liberation of Northern Luzon on January 9, 1945.

The Lingayen Gulf is a strategically historical stage of the battle between American and Japanese Forces during World War II. The bay is very significant to the province of Pangasinan. On December 22 1941, Japanese 14th Army under Lieutenant General Masaharu Homma landed on the Eastern part of the gulf at Agoo, Caba, Santiago and Bauang, where they betrothed in a number of relatively minor scuffles with the defenders, which consisted of a poorly-equipped contingent of predominantly American and Filipino troops, and managed to successfully invade and occupy the gulf. After the defeat, General Douglas MacArthur issued the order to retreat from Luzon and withdraw to Bataan. For the next three years, the gulf remained under Japanese occupation after the Lingayen Gulf Landings.

There once was a tamarind tree towering over the center of the town, making other trees look small in comparison. Onlookers looked back in awe as they passed by the giant tree. When people asked them what route they took to return home, they simply said “through Lingayen,” a word derived from the Pangasinan word “lingawen” or “to look back.” Since then, the town bears the same name.

Lingayen was founded in 1614 after Augustinian and Spanish conquistadors drew a plan to establish the town. Lingayen was established as the capital of Pangasinan when the province became an encomienda. Lingayen was the theater for some of the bloodiest battles of World War II. When the Japanese invaded the province, Lingayen was one of their main targets due to its strategic location. Not long after the invasion, dozens of US-sponsored guerrilla groups sprouted across Pangasinan to defend their motherland against the brutal Japanese invaders. General Douglas MacArthur chose the Lingayen Gulf as the spot where his massive liberation fleet would land. Lingayen, along with other coastal towns in Pangasinan, became the venue for one of the biggest Allied landings of the Second World War that resulted in the liberation of the country from the Japanese.

The Municipality of Lingayen is the capital of the Province of Pangasinan. It is part of the second congressional district, bordering the towns of Labrador to the east, Bugallon to the south, and Binmaley to the west. Lingayen has a total land area of 6,276 hectares and a population of 107,728 according to the 2020 census. Lingayen hosts several national and provincial government offices, which include the Capitol Building that houses the offices of the provincial governor, vice governor, board members, as well as the Sangguniang Panlalawigan session hall. The Urduja House is also located in Lingayen, the official residence of the governor of Pangasinan.

There are several tourist attractions in Lingayen, including the Casa Real, once used as the provincial seat of government, in contrast to the Capitol Complex, which is the current provincial seat of government. The Sison Auditorium, a world-class venue, hosts some of the most important events in the province. The well-preserved ancestral home of former President Fidel V. Ramos is also located in Lingayen. Lastly, the Lingayen Baywalk is one of the newest attractions in the capital town.

Lingayen is known for its bagoong-making industry, with 60 small to medium bagoong processors registered in 2019. With bagoong as the municipality’s One Town One Product (OTOP) and its most lucrative industry, the town has been celebrating the Bagoong Festival since 2011.
