What are the fascinating tourist spots in Ilocos Sur for the curious traveler aside from the world-famous Vigan City? Included are both popular and off-beaten places to visit and include in your itinerary.

I just resigned from a job after some months of exhausting and hectic engagements. That was my first job in the sprawling Manila metropolis and I never thought it could be that stress-filled for someone like me who got used to living a simple life in the mountains.

I badly needed a break and travel was my ultimate respite. Instead of going back home, I chose to explore the eco-cultural wonders of Ilocos Sur, one of the provinces of Region I.

Vigan, Luzon, Philippines

In light of the current COVID-19 situation, the recommendations and activities mentioned in this article are for the purpose of possible future holidays. Please always refer to local government health advisories for travel.

Once pandemic restrictions are lifted, which destination should top your travel bucket list? In the Philippines, more fun awaits. The archipelago nation has spent this downtime preparing for the return of international travellers by developing exciting new activities, attractions, and destinations. With “new normal” safeguards in place, including enhanced health and hygiene protocols, jet-setters can immerse themselves in these authentic experiences while staying protected.

Comprising thousands of islands and hundreds of different cultures, the Philippines provides endless opportunities for exploration. So where should you start?

Located on the northwest coast of the country’s largest and most populous island, Luzon, Region 1 is the perfect entry point. Also known as the Ilocos Region, the area encompasses four provinces, including La Union, Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur. It is filled with local heritage sites, surf-friendly beaches, and scenic biking routes.

Current rules for visiting the Philippines

Tourists are currently permitted to explore the Ilocos Region provided they present a negative RT-PCR test or Philippine Red Cross (PRC)-issued Saliva Test taken no more than 72 hours before travel. To reach the Ilocos Region, you can fly into Clark International Airport and then travel by land. Under current restrictions, all travel plans must be booked through a DOT-accredited tour operator and a Travel Request must be applied for through the Tara Na! VISITA (Visitor Information and Tourist Assistance) System , both within a minimum of five working days before the date of travel.

On arrival, visitors must present their QR Coded Tourist Pass (QTP) at a Tourism One-Stop-Shop and secure a Tourist Access Pass (TAP). Both the QTP and TAP will be required to enter tourist attractions, sticking strictly to a prearranged itinerary. You should also refer to the local government health advisory for the latest travel rules. For more information, visit www. morefunawaits.com .

The following activities in Region 1 are not to be missed.

Cruising between Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur

Hundred Islands National Park

There’s no better way to experience Region 1’s stunning coastline than by cruise. Check out the picturesque beaches and rock formations of the northwestern municipality of Currimao before heading south to Salomague Port in Cabugao town, which has been expanded over the past year to better accommodate cruise ships. Here, visitors can disembark and explore the historic port or head to the white-sand Pug-Os Beach for some relaxation.

Further south in the Lingayen Gulf, ships can stop by Hundred Islands National Park Cruise Port, where more white-sand beaches and stunning tropical scenery await. Made up of 124 islands at low tide and 123 at high tide, the protected area offers endless opportunities to relax and explore. Here, days can be spent kayaking, snorkelling, trekking, sunbathing and island-to-island ziplining.

Sun, beaches, and surfing

San Juan, La Union

Soft sands, turquoise waters, and lush greenery make Hundred Islands a tough destination to beat, but beach lovers will find plenty more to explore in Region 1. Close to the national park, Patar Beach is popular for its golden sands, crystal clear ocean, abundant marine life, pocket-friendly seafood, and quaint beach huts.

Head north around the Lingayen Gulf and you’ll reach La Union, a surfers’ paradise. To hit the waves, plan your trip between July and September (South Swell) or October to March (North Swell) when the breaks can reach up to three metres. Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan is one of the most popular surfing destinations in the area. Here, you’ll find surfboards for rent and accommodation ranging from basic guesthouses to luxury beachfront resorts and villas.

It’s also worth the long journey north to hit up Saud Beach, which topped Travel + Leisure’s list of the 25 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World earlier this year thanks to its pristine sands, calm water, and mellow vibe.

Culture and heritage

Paoay Church

Region 1 is brimming with culture and heritage attractions, from churches and pilgrimage sites to villages championing traditional crafts. In 1993, UNESCO recognised four Baroque-style, Spanish colonial-era churches as World Heritage Sites, two of which can be found in Region 1.

Located in the northwestern Municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Paoay Church is famed for its striking triangular stone facade and three-storey bell tower. The Roman Catholic church was completed in 1710 and is supported against earthquakes by huge buttresses on the sides and back. Also recognised by UNESCO, Santa Maria Church is another prime example of Spanish-colonial Baroque architecture. Situated in Ilocos Sur, the hilltop sanctuary has acted as a lookout, citadel and religious centre since its erection in 1765.

The historic city of Vigan is home to another must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site, Calle Crislogo. Lined with Spanish colonial houses that are now home to museums, souvenir shops and restaurants, the beautifully preserved cobbled street will transport you back to the 16th century. Across the city, you can also encounter the Ilocos region’s age-old traditions such as loom weaving, pottery, and bagnet, which is a mouthwatering local delicacy of crispy pork belly.

Exploring nature

Tangadan Falls, La Union

Beyond its rich culture and heritage, Region 1 abounds with stunning nature adventures. Dotted with bamboo sculptures, Paoay Sand Dunes in Ilocos Norte is a true bucket-list experience. Located half an hour’s drive from Laoag, the dunes are best explored by quad bike, jeep, or sandboard.

For something equally adrenaline-fuelled, you can hire a bike and drive two hours up the coast for a scenic drive along the Patapat Viaduct, lined with ocean on one side and lush rainforest on the other. Alternatively, head south to Santol, La Union, where a scenic, 10-kilometre mountain drive along the highland road provides easy access to Simminubulan Falls. Chase more waterfalls in nearby San Gabriel, where you can take a refreshing dip in the pool below the 50-foot Tangadan Falls.

At the time this was written (12 November 2021), domestic travellers to Ilocos region must present a negative RT-PCR test or Antigen test result as well as confirmed booking from DOT-accredited accommodation.

Regions of the Philippines and Key Tourist Attractions

Table of contents.

Map of the 17 regions of the Philippines including location of 80 provinces

Let us take you through the regions of the Philippines and what they have to offer in terms of natural wonders, manmade attractions, food and festivals.

National Capital Region

This is the seat of Philippine Government where most national offices are located including the Malacañan Palace, Supreme Court, Senate of the Philippines and the House of Representatives. The region is collectively known as Metro Manila which covers the City of Manila and other 15 cities surrounding it.

Most international visitors fly to Manila through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport located along the boundary between Pasay City and Parañaque City. Those who opt for sea travel may also enter the region through the Manila Seaport which is also the chief seaport in the country.

Metro Manila is the busiest region in the Philippines; there is no shortage of accommodations, restaurants, shopping centers and entertainment venues for both residents and visitors. It is a cornucopia of different cultures, traditions and culinary delights so there is no distinct specialty in the region.

Key attractions:

  • Luneta Park
  • Binondo (Manila Chinatown)
  • SM Mall of Asia

Cordillera Administrative Region

Centered on the Cordillera Mountain range of Central Luzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region is the only land-locked region in the Philippines. It is composed mainly of highlands which are inhabited by indigenous tribes like the Ifugaos, Ibalois and Kalingans.

Baguio City is the busiest part of the region; it is the main tourist hub and commercial center with numerous attractions and businesses.

Temperatures in the region are a few degrees colder than Metro Manila, making it an ideal escape from the heat especially during the summer season. In fact, Baguio City is recognized as the Summer Capital of the Philippines. The mild weather in the region is also conducive for growing strawberries for which Baguio City is famous. Other products include peanut brittle, ube jam and sundot kulangot, a sweet snack made from glutinous rice.

  • Camp John Hay
  • Mansion House
  • Banaue Rice Terraces
  • Panagbenga Festival (February)

Ilocos Region (Region 1)

It has four provinces: Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. Ilocos is known has the home of the affluent Marcoses whose patriarch became the only dictator President of the Philippines. Much attention has been brought to the Ilocos Region due to the recent efforts of the Tourism Department to promote its natural and manmade attractions.

The Ilocos Region is largely historical and it also features stunning beaches and wonderful food. It is home to the Pagudpud Beaches which are some of the best in the country. Surfing is also a popular pursuit in the southern towns in La Union. And one must never leave the region without tasting bagnet (deep fried pork), longganisa (sausage), empanada (stuffed pastry) and pinakbet (stir-fried vegetables).

Key Attractions:

  • Vigan City (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

The name is actually an acronym for the provinces in the region: Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon. It is also known as Southern Tagalog Mainland. The region is mainly known as the seat of the revolution against the Spanish in the 19th century and a number of historical buildings and landmarks that speak of its tumultuous past.

Different attractions are featured in different provinces in the region. Cavite has plenty of historical attractions while Batangas has a lot to offer when it comes to natural wonders. Laguna also has some attractions but it is known more as the producers of the delectable buko pie (much like the apple pie but with coconut meat instead of apple).

  • CamSur Watersports Complex
  • The beaches of Camarines Norte and Catanduanes

Western Visayas (Region 6)

Western Visayas is another one of the most visited regions in the Philippines owed mainly to the world-famous Boracay Island. But the region is more than just the home of Boracay, it also features many other natural wonders and progressive cities.

Due to the large volume of tourists visiting the region, Western Visayas is served by three international airports and four domestic airports. There are also sea vessels that carry tourists to the port of Iloilo City, the regional center.

Central Visayas (Region 7)

Central Visayas has three main islands: Cebu, Bohol and the western half of Negros (Negros Oriental), and there’s the small island of Siquijor. Due to its location on the easternmost side of the Philippine Islands facing the Pacific Ocean, Eastern Visayas is one of the wettest regions in the country. It is largely agricultural and it also depends on the aquatic resources provided by the deep seas.

The region is relatively undiscovered by tourists resulting to a good number of virgin beaches and unspoiled natural wonders. Tacloban, the regional center, has some historical sites as well.

  • McArthur’s Landing

Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9)

Located on the northwestern portion of Mindanao, the region lies on a peninsula stretching out to the Sulu Sea. The region is made up of three provinces: Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. It was formerly part of the Spanish East Indies, resulting to the dominance of Spanish-speaking locals. The local dialect is now known as Chavacano which is also the name of its people.

The Zamboanga Peninsula is rich in natural resources and it features stunning beauty. However, its tourism potential is held back by the insurgencies in Mindanao. Traveling to the region is not encouraged especially to foreigners but those who come for a visit are rewarded with the wonders of Zamboanga.

  • The vintas (boats with colorful sails)
  • The white sand beaches of Zamboanga Sibugay
  • Curacha crabs

Northern Mindanao (Region 10)

Northern Mindanao is located west of the Zamboanga Peninsula. It has five provinces including the small island called Camiguin. The regional center is the highly-urbanized city of Cagayan de Oro.

The region has a mild climate with rains evenly distributed throughout the year. It is one of the few places in the Philippines not heavily affected by monsoons, making it an ideal destination during the rainy season in the country. The region is also home to Bukidnon, an elevated province with a cold climate comparable to that of Baguio City

The region is home to different indigenous tribes supported and protected by the local governments of major cities. Davao Region is blessed with the abundance of natural resources both in land and in its waters. Its proximity to Mt. Apo makes it protected from the raging storms that affect the rest of the country. It also boasts of many natural attractions and claims to provide every tourist a ‘from the mountains to the seas’ adventure.

  • Island Garden City of Samal beaches
  • Davao Crocodile Park
  • Philippine Eagle Center
  • Camp Sabros, Davao del Sur

  • Gumasa Beach in Glan, Sarangani
  • Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong City

CARAGA REGION (Region 13)

The region is located at the northwestern portion of Mindanao, facing the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Sea. The location greatly contributes to its lure among members of the surfing circuit all over the world. Siargao, Surigao del Norte is considered the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, comparable to Hawaii and Bali, Indonesia.

Caraga region is an outdoorsman’s paradise; it offers plenty of exciting adventures involving rivers, falls, forests, islands and caves. The province of Agusan del Sur is home to the largest crocodile in captivity, Lolong which was caught in the town of Bunawan.

  • Agusan Marsh
  • Cloud 9, Siargao
  • Enchanted River
  • Hinagdanan Falls

Autonomous Region os Muslim Mindanao (ARMM)

This predominantly Muslim region covering the western side of Mindanao and the islands of Sulu and Tawi-tawi has a notorious reputation in the traveling circuit. But the reputation set aside, ARMM features natural beauty like no other; virgin beaches, mangrove forests, mountain springs and majestic waterfalls abound in the region. The people of ARMM also boasts of a rich culture showcased in their clothing, traditions and music.

Traveling to ARMM is highly discouraged my most foreign governments. It is common knowledge that there have been abductions of foreign missionaries and journalists by terrorist and rebel groups Abu Sayaff and MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front). If you must visit the region, be sure to take proper precautions and seek the protection of authorities.

There’s always something beautiful and exciting to discover anywhere in the Philippines. The regions may have boundaries but there’s definitely no limit to what you can experience in these islands. Travel all over the country, experience each region one at a time and you will soon find the Philippines a blessed paradise.

15 Best CAGAYAN Tourist Spots (Northern Philippines)

 alt=

Over a decade ago, I was in my mid-20s and working as a TV segment producer on a show for a major TV network. This stint allowed me to travel to some of the best places, including Cagayan, one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines. The trip was so memorable for me, I’d always wanted to return. I guess I manifested it because in 2019, I joined a familiarization trip organized by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority ( CEZA ). I recall thinking that despite the passing years, Cagayan remained pretty much the same, generally unexplored and as splendid as I had remembered it.

Cagayan Province is located in the Cagayan Valley region in the northern part of the Philippines. Its capital is Tuguegarao City . There are different stories as to the etymology of Cagayan. One is from the term “Catagayan,” meaning “the place where tagay grows.” Tagay is a type of plant that is endemic to the northern province. On the other hand, some linguists claim that the province’s name was derived from the local words for “river,” such as karayan , kayan , kayayan , and kalayan .

Cagayanos are mostly of Ilocano descent who migrated from the Ilocos Region. The second largest community is the Ibanag, while the minor population comprises the Malawis, Itawits, Gaddangs, Aetas, and Ibatans. The primary language in Cagayan is Ilocano, followed by Ibanag, Itawit, and Tagalog.

Dubbed the Land of Smiling Beauty, Cagayan is known for its Spanish colonial heritage and Sambali or Piat festival held annually to celebrate the Christianization of the Itawis. Thanks to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, it’s also a major ecotourism destination, particularly attracting adventure seekers for its majestic caves, fishing expeditions, and hiking trails.

1. Palaui Island

Palaui is a protected island in Santa Ana, Cagayan , covering an area of 7,145 hectares. In 1994, Palaui was declared a National Marine Reserve and was home to 90 migratory birds, 21 commercial species of fish, and about 50 hectares of corals. It gained worldwide popularity after being used as a filming location for two Survivor seasons; Survivor Blood vs. Water and Survivor Cagayan in 2013.

Palaui Island Cagayan

It was one of the places we visited during the familiariazation tour with CEZA. It took about 30 minutes to get to the island via boat from San Vicente Port.

Palaui is an excellent destination if you want to spend a day with nature. Some activities that you can do on the island are hiking, scuba diving, and enjoying the view of the rolling hills. The best attractions in Palaui are Cape Engaño Lighthouse, Anguib beach, Punta Verde, and Crocodile island.

We took a hike to the Cape Engaño Lighthouse (or Faro de Cabo Engaño). The lighthouse is not open to the public, but we were free to roam in the surrounding areas. And the view from that hill is worth the effort. There’s a 360-view of the sea and nearby islands; it was simply breathtaking.

Palaui Island Cagayan

Next we went to Punta Verde located on the other side of Palaui Island. It has an unsullied beach and numerous homesteads that accommodate tourists. If you want to see some props from the Survivor TV show, you can check out some at Punta Verde, specifically at Nature Village, where they were on display.

2. Anguib Beach

Anguib beach , also known as Boracay of the North, is located in the municipality of Sta. Ana. The beach is often compared with Boracay for its cerulean blue waters and fine white sand. I didn’t know that Cagayan was hiding such a pristine beach that when I saw it, I was completely blown away. The beach remains largely unexploited, so ruggedly gorgeous that it can rival the more popular beaches in the Philippines.

Anguib beach 3

If you want to enjoy a beautiful beach away from the crowd, you should visit Anguib. The waters here are clean and filled with marine life making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

3. Callao Cave

Callao Cave is located in Peñablanca, Cagayan, about 24 km from Tuguegarao City. It’s known for the seven-chamber show caves that were first excavated in 1980. It’s part of the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS), a protected area and national park.

Callao Cave

Callao Cave is an important site in Cagayan not only for tourism purposes but also for its historical contribution. In 2007, a team of archaeologists excavated fossils of human sub-species called Callao Man or Homo Luzonensis from the late Pleistocene era from this cave. Today, tourists can visit seven chambers inside the cave, including the Chapel. This cave is perfect for beginners as it’s easy to navigate.

4. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River is a tributary of the Cagayan River that passes through the PPLS. The name means left-most in the local vernacular. It’s known for its fantastic views of karst formations and unspoiled waters.

You can go swimming or take a leisurely boat ride on this river. If you’re up for an adventure, you can do water rafting or kayaking, or ask the boatman to take you to Callao Cave where yo can go spelunking or see thousands of bats.

5. Nangaramoan Beach

Nangaramoan beach is located in Sta. Ana and it sits on the same shoreline as the other beaches, Anguib, Puzo, and Mapurao. With white golden sand, clear blue waters, and surrounded with lush greenery and rock formations, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite destination by the locals.

Nangaramoan Beach

This is one of the beaches that you can visit in Sta. Ana. You can go on a day trip or stay overnight as there several resorts in the area. The shoreline is rocky, and the sand is coarse and filled with crushed corals, so be mindful of where you step. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the serene scenery and the picturesque beach.

6. Baggao’s Bluewater Falls and Cave

Baggao Bluewater Falls and Cave is a natural waterpark in the municipality of Baggao. It’s an underrated destination in Cagayan, where people can enjoy the waterfalls, swim in the natural pools, and explore the caves.

This park should be included in your itinerary if you’re looking for adrenaline-filled activities. Get ready to embark on an adventure where you can go trekking, river crossing, canyoneering, and spelunking.

7. Casagan Bridge & River

Casagan Bridge is located in Sta. Ana and it takes about 15 minutes to get there from the town properly. The bridge was built in 2018 on top of the Casagan Takuli River, which is the residents’ primary source of livelihood thanks to its abundant supply of edible shells and fish.

Casagan Santa Ana Cagayan

It’s one of the places we went to during the fam trip with CEZA. The bridge’s structure was made with planks of wood, steel cables, and chicken wire. It’s narrow, but light vehicles like motorbikes and bicycles can pass through it. I was able to walk over the bridge and take some photos; it swayed a little, but the bridge was sturdy, so there was nothing to worry about. This is a nice side trip when you visit Cagayan.

8. Buntun Bridge

Buntun Bridge crosses the Cagayan River from Tuguegararo city to Solana. The bridge was made with 14 Japanese steel spans. It took three administrations to complete the structure, beginning in 1959 under former President Carlos P. Garcia. Constructions continued during the term of former President Diosdado Macapagal, but it wasn’t until 1969 that it was finally finished and officially opened under former President Ferdinand Marcos.

At 1,369 m, it’s the second longest bridge in the Philippines after the San Juanico Bridge and the longest among river bridges in the country.

The bridge is the gateway to Tuguegarao City. It offers an unobstructed view of the Cagayan River; thus, the bridge became a tourist attraction in itself. It’s also a good vantage point for photographing the Sierra Madre and Cordillera mountains and the sunset.

9. Dumasag River

Dumasag River is located in Sitio Limbus, Barangay Rapuli, Sta Ana. The National Irrigation Authority originally intended the river to become a water resource for the rice fields in the area. Later on, it was developed into a tourist attraction due to its natural beauty.

Dumasag River Cagayan

Visit the Dumasag river and experience the slow and chill vibe of the province. You can go swimming here, slide down the makeshift waterslides, rent a tent, relax, and interact with the friendly locals.

10. Sierra Cave

The Sierra Cave is a living karst cave in Cagayan Valley situated in Peñablanca. It’s included in the 300 caves identified by the National Museum of the Philippines.

You will be amazed to see the beautiful limestone formations as well as the stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave. While the cave is generally easy to navigate, some tunnels are so narrow getting through them is going to be quite an experience. One such tunnel is Celica’s Passage, which is only 2 feet in diameter.

11. Buwacag Falls

Bucawag Falls is situated in Barangay Sta Clara, in the municipality of Sta. Ana. It’s part of Cagayan’s eco-50-hectare tourism site. The name “bucawag” means the deafening sound of flowing waters. The site is being preserved and managed by the Bucawag Eco-Tourism Association or BETA.

Buwacag Falls Santa Ana Cagayan

If you’re up for some physical challenge in exchange for the breathtaking views of the waterfalls and a refreshing dip in the natural pools, you should visit Bucawag. You will trek through the thick forest, past several rivers and different tiers of waterfalls. The trek is going to be challenging as the rocks are slippery, but there are safety ropes along the trail so you can definitely do it.

12. St. Peter’s Cathedral

St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral is a Baroque church built in the 18th century. It is also known as Tuguegarao Cathedral, and you can find it at Barangay Centro 10, Tuguegarao City. The church used to be the seat of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, founded by Dominican friars.

St. Peter’s Cathedral

Whether religious or not, you will be astonished by the beautiful architectural design of the church. Made with sand, gravel, cement, mortar, steel, and bricks, the church has withstood the test of time, including World War II, where it suffered tremendous damage. It has since been restored and is now considered one of the most important historical landmarks in Tuguegarao city.

13. San Vicente Port (Santa Ana)

San Vicente Fish Port is an anchorage in Dugo, San Vicente Road, in the municipality of Sta Ana. This is the jump point for island-hopping activities, including the boat trip to Palaui Islands.

San Vicente Port Santa Ana Cagayan

The port is not just a starting point for every island hopping activity but a destination in itself. There, you can watch the fishermen and boatmen as they go about their day. If you want a glimpse of local living, this is one of the best spots to do it.

14. Iguig Calvary Hills

Iguig Cavalry Hills is located on Cagayan Valley Road in the municipality of Iguig. It’s a known pilgrimage site in Cagayan, especially during the Holy Week or the Lenten Season. It was built in 1892, and it has 14 stations of the cross and a church called San Antonio de Galicia.

Even if you’re not Catholic, the Calvary Hills is an exciting tourist destination. It sits on top of a hill, offering a scenic view of gentle green slopes and the Cagayan River.

15. Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat

The Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat, also known as Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora de Piat, is located at Poblacion, Piat. It’s considered the Pilgrimage Center of Northeast Luzon. The church dates back to 1604 and is home to Madonna Our Lady of Piat, a brown-colored image of the virgin mary that is over a century old. It’s also a pilgrimage site, attracting many devotees, especially during the Sambali Festival and the feast of Our Lady of Piat, both are celebrated in July.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Piat is one of the 18 minor basilicas in the Philippines; for this alone, it’s worth checking out. The church is made of bricks with a curved wooden ceiling. Its simplicity makes the church unique, as most old churches in Cagayan have more lavish interiors and designs.

Destination Ilocos: How To Get To Ilocos Region

June 5, 2015

tourist destination of region 1

Destination Ilocos

Region 1 or the Ilocos Region is composed of four provinces and a city—Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, and Dagupan City. Majority of the population speaks Ilocano, the third largest spoken language in the Philippines, although a significant number also speak Pangasinense.

The region has a coast and hilly ranges that are prone to typhoon in the wet months, but devastatingly hot during the dry season. This is the backdrop of Ilocano food. It’s salty due to the proximity to the sea. There is even an entire province named after asin (salt) in Pangasinan. Fish is preserved by drying, and of course, reduced into a paste or sauce by fermentation.

Vegetables are hardy and can weather the rains or extreme heat. Thus, you have dishes like pinakbet or dinengdeng—locally sourced vegetable, flavored with fish paste.

Locals have a penchant for crunchy things too—like the corn snack, chichacorn; the delectable longganisa-stuffed empanada; and the deliciously deadly bagnet—cured and fried pieces of pork belly!

There are a lot of natural highlights here too.

Take the Hundred Islands National Park, for instance. There are 123 islands, each with its own little eco-system. Some say these islands are 2 million years old. Imagine hiking through a limestone formation that has seen the dawn of man. Love basking on the sand? The coast provides a colorful array of it from the greyest of grey to the white beaches of Pagudpud. There’s even one beach that is just pure pebble.

Many of these beaches cater to tourists, like the surfing areas of San Juan in La Union. But take a while to get lost, and you’ll still find hidden gems in small towns. Architectural masterpieces? There are three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ilocos Sur alone.

In Vigan, there are 187 documented examples of period architecture. It’s like traveling 500 years back. And in every town, you’ll find ancient churches—even older than the Missions of California.

For the artist in you, take your time to learn the tedious process of weaving abel. During the colonial area, abel was so famous, it almost destroyed Spain’s textile industry. According to specialists, it was used as sail cloths for the galleons and was comparable to Belgian linen. Abel was originally used from the time one was born ‘til one’s death, from baby blanket to death robe. And for all other occasions in between.

Take some time to plot out your itinerary, because it can be overwhelming. You can tailor your own food trip, architectural escapade, adventure tour or just relax along the West Philippine Sea. But make sure to leave some time for the most important part of your journey—getting lost and hanging with the locals.

Despite being founded all the way back in 1609, there aren’t any historical or cultural attractions of note in the town. Most people simply come to kick back and relax on the beach or take to the waves and surf all day in the sun; it’s the perfect destination for sun-worshippers and beach lovers.

Top 5 New Beautiful Tourist Spots in the Philippines to Watch Out for

More tourist destinations in the Philippines are propping up. President Rodrigo Duterte approved laws declaring several sites in the country as new tourist spots 12 . This means the new tourist destinations will be funded and developed to boost tourism in their respective areas.

Here are the five new attractions in the Philippines that travelers should explore:

1. Mount Bulaylay

Mt. Bulaylay has the longest and tallest zipline in Nueva Ecija , making it the primary tourist spot in Cuyapo town. The local government of Cuyapo plans to develop it into an eco-tourism park.

2. Candon City Ecotourism Zone

Here’s another reason to visit Ilocos Sur besides the historic city of Vigan: a new ecotourism destination in Candon City is in the works. The Ecotourism Zone in Candon houses a sprawling watershed, and the local government hopes to lure tourists by offering recreational activities nearby.

With the recent opening of the newly built Heroes bypass road in Candon, the city’s tourist spots—including the new ecotourism zone—will be more accessible.

3. Santiago Cove

Ilocos Sur has its version of Boracay in Sabangan Cove (aka Santiago Cove). Like Bora, Santiago Cove boasts white sand and serene, crystal-clear water. Visitors can swim, dive, or unwind while appreciating the beauty of the beach.

4. Pinsal Falls

Another hidden treasure of Ilocos Sur, Pinsal Falls (aka Twin Falls) is an 85-foot cascading waterfall—the largest in the Ilocos region—located in Sta. Maria.

Trek to reach the top of Pinsal Falls. Small jacuzzi-like pools sit above the falls, where tourists can dip into the cold water and enjoy a stunning landscape view .

5. Hinatuan Enchanted River

The Enchanted River in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur isn’t exactly a new tourist attraction, though more tourists have recently discovered it. Still, up to this day, not many people know that this mesmerizing natural wonder exists.

The river is nothing less than magical, as its water changes from aquamarine to blue, depending on its shifting depth. Locals believe that fairies and other mythical spirits protect the river—this adds to the river’s mystical nature.

Tips and Warning

1. never lose your temper when dealing with locals.

Filipinos have a lot of admirable qualities—but punctuality is not one of them. Expect that your flights will be delayed, the food will be served late, the tour won’t start on time, and so on. We have a label for this tardiness habit: Filipino Time .

Lashing out at the flight attendants, waiters, or tour guides won’t improve the situation . You’ll end up wasting your time and energy. Worse, you might become the next viral sensation on social media, like the Chinese tourist who assaulted a cop 13 in a train station.

Be more patient, calm, and diplomatic when dealing with locals on your Philippine trip . You might get better service that way.

2. Pack light and loose clothing

In most tourist spots in the Philippines, the weather tends to be very hot and humid, especially during the summer. Make sure you’ll be comfortable on your trip by bringing clothes that won’t make you sweat buckets.

3. Respect local culture and tradition

Most Filipinos, especially in far-flung places, are conservative. So be careful with what you wear and what you do while vacationing in the Philippines.

Wearing skimpy clothing, skinny dipping, and kissing in public may be acceptable in your home country, but these things can offend the locals and make them uncomfortable. Learn a lesson from a Taiwanese tourist fined for wearing a string bikini 14 in Boracay.

Also, places (like mountains, churches, etc.) and religious rituals are sacred to the locals. This is why researching the destination before a trip is crucial . Be mindful and respectful of the customs in the places you visit in the Philippines. Don’t be noisy and rowdy in sacred places and during rituals.

4. Respect the environment

As a tourist, your role goes beyond just visiting a place. So you can enjoy the place as much as you did the first time you visited , do your share in preserving the environment. This couldn’t be more crucial in the Philippines, where natural resources abound.

Simple practices—like not leaving trash on the beach, not stepping on corals, and not disturbing marine life and wildlife—prevent harming the environment. Know the guidelines before you go. If you aren’t sure about something, ask your tour guide.

5. Beware of tourist scams

Taxi scams, especially at the airport, often happen to foreign tourists in the Philippines. When hailing a taxi, ensure the driver agrees to use the meter. Otherwise, you might be charged a fixed and steep price.

If the driver refuses your request, wait for another taxi. Book a ride via an app like Grab, Micab, or Hirna.

Also, beware of pickpockets in crowded areas (like malls and markets), jeepneys, and buses. Don’t put your valuables in the back pocket of your pants or backpack. Store them safely in a belt bag or sling bag instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. is the philippines safe to visit.

Yes, it’s generally safe to travel to the Philippines. While there are valid concerns about violence due to terrorism and the nationwide campaign against illegal drugs, these are isolated cases that don’t happen in the entire country.

For peace of mind, read up and follow any travel alert issued by your government. It also helps to research the peace and order situation in the place you plan to visit, not just in the Philippines but in other countries.

As for the Philippine tourist spots featured in this post, rest assured that these destinations are safe to visit. Of course, you also have to do your part in ensuring your safety anywhere you go.

2. Do I need a visa to visit the Philippines?

Tourists from most parts of the world can enter the Philippines without a visa for a temporary visit of up to 30 days. Holders of Hong Kong and Macau passports can stay in the Philippines visa-free for up to 14 days. Check the Department of Foreign Affairs website for the list of visa-free countries. However, a visa is required for passport holders of certain countries like China, North Korea, India, the majority of the Middle East, and a few parts of Africa and Europe.

3. When is the best time to visit the Philippines?

When traveling, the right time to visit the country depends on your purpose, preference, or priority. If you want good weather, especially in a beach destination, schedule your trip in the dry season from November to May. The wet season starts in June and ends in October, so avoid this period if you don’t want the rain to ruin your trip.

Looking to experience what it’s like to have “more fun in the Philippines”? Visit during the summer when most festivals and events are held and when beaches are most beautiful. For those who want to avoid the crowd and score cheaper travel deals, avoid the peak season. Christmas, Holy Week, and other holidays and the summer months from March to May are the busiest tourist season.

The top tourist spots in the Philippines also get crowded with tourists on weekends. While it’s good to visit in the off-peak season, it’s better to schedule your visit in the shoulder months of May to June and October to November for a lesser chance of rain. The rainy season in the Philippines is an ideal time to visit for surfing (as waves are stronger) and visit waterfalls (as the water isn’t dried up).

4. How many days are enough to visit the Philippines?

The ideal duration of your stay depends on the number and types of destinations you’ll visit. Two to three days are enough to explore a beach destination like Boracay and Bohol. If you visit Puerto Princesa, El Nido, and Coron in Palawan, you should spend more than a week exploring the best tourist spots there.

Consider extending your stay for a week if you have side trips to nearby tourist spots (e.g., Iloilo-Guimaras/Antique trip). Your trip could be longer, lasting for about two weeks to a month, if you’re a backpacker hopping from one island or province to another (e.g., Palawan-Cebu-Bohol trip).

In destinations like Intramuros, Vigan, Tagaytay, Subic, and Bataan, a day trip, an overnight or weekend trip will cover all the best attractions.

5. How do you get around in the Philippines?

The most popular and cheapest transport options are jeepneys and tricycles.  Habal-habal  (motorcycle ride) is common in the provinces, too. However, if you’re traveling with a group (especially with kids and the elderly), go for convenient modes of transport like taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab (available in certain areas only). These vehicles are typically used to get to the city or town proper from the airport.

You can explore places on foot for short distances and areas where public transportation is almost non-existent. Buses and vans are the common transport choices when traveling from one town or city to another, while boats are used for traveling to different islands or beaches.

To get to a province in the Philippines from your home country, the usual jump-off point is in Manila. For instance, you have to fly to Manila to reach Palawan or Davao.

6. How much money should I bring to the Philippines?

The average daily cost per traveler in the Philippines is around ₱1,500 or less, depending on the destination. Cash is the country’s most accepted mode of payment, so be sure to bring enough for your entire stay, especially if you travel to remote areas that don’t accept credit cards and have no ATMs.

Consider also that travelers can bring up to $10,000 (or its equivalent in another currency) into or out of the Philippines. You can carry a higher amount, though. But you’re required to declare it upon arrival at the Bureau of Customs Desk at the airport. If you don’t, you may be fined or jailed, or your money may be confiscated.

7. How do I travel for cheap in the Philippines?

The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to visit, luring budget travelers worldwide. But, of course, you can further save on your travel costs.

Here are some quick tips for cheaper travel to the Philippines:

a. Book flights, accommodations, and tour packages early. b. Fly with budget airlines (the most popular are Cebu Pacific and AirAsia) offering discounted airfare and wait for seat sales when prices drop significantly. c. Travel during weekdays and off-peak season when hotels and tour operators offer significant discounts and other great deals. d. Travel to cheaper destinations like Guimaras, Masbate, Bontoc, and other underrated tourist spots in the Philippines. e. If you can, go for DIY travel and plan your trip.  f. Visit free and cheap attractions like parks and museums. g. Eat at small eateries (locally called  carinderia ), fast-food restaurants (Jollibee and Mcdonald’s are the most popular), and mall food courts.

8. Can I fly a drone in the Philippines?

Yes, flying a drone is allowed in the country, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). However, specific rules must be followed before and while operating your unit.

Here are the most crucial drone regulations to keep in mind:

a. Secure a permit from the local government office to fly a drone. b. Fly only in the daytime and good weather. c. Get a Certificate of Authorization from the CAAP if you fly a drone that weighs at least 7 kg. or 15 lbs. or for commercial purposes. d. Don’t fly within 10-km. radius from an airport. e. Avoid flying in crowded areas like markets and schools. f. Fly only up to 400 ft. above ground level.

Florida is home to theme parks, sharks, alligators, beaches, but it made ‘most boring’ list

tourist destination of region 1

Florida is boring?!

The Sunshine State is home to Disney World and Universal Studios and has hundreds of miles of beaches. We have the oldest city in the U.S. in our backyard and some of the richest people in the world .

To keep life interesting, we even have sharks and alligators .

Apparently, that's not enough.

According to a study by Solitaired , Florida is the fifth most boring state in the United States , based on an analysis of 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions around the world. The analysis was made to determine what locations were the least interesting.

Here's what the study discovered.

Takeaways from study on Top 100 most boring tourist sites around the world

According to Solitaired , key takeaways include:

  • Branson Scenic Railway in Branson, Missouri, is the most boring attraction in the world.
  • Museums comprise 33% of the Top 100 most boring attractions.
  • Four LEGOLAND Discovery Centers are in the Top 25 most boring attractions worldwide.
  • Georgia is the most boring state, with many attractions and extensive reviews indicating boredom.
  • The U.S., Canada and Australia hold the top three spots for countries with the most boring tourist attractions. And yes, U.S. was No. 1.

Top 'most boring' tourist attractions in Florida

Top 10 states with highest boredom score

"We ranked states based on how often attractions were called boring in reviews compared to the total number of attractions with any reviews labeling them boring in that state," Solitaired said. "By this metric, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Tennessee are the nation's top three boring states."

The "boredom score" is on a scale from zero to five.

  • Georgia: 21 boring attractions. Boredom score: 5.0
  • Massachusetts: 4 boring attractions. Boredom score: 4.1

How did Florida rank as 5th most boring state in US?

"With its 104 boring attractions, Florida might seem like the boredom capital at first glance ," Solitaired said.

"Yet, it only ranks as the fifth most boring state because each attraction garners very few yawns from visitors. Despite many attractions being labeled boring by reviewers, this sentiment is such a minority that Florida only pans out as the fifth most boring state."

Solitaired, an online gaming platform that creates classic games — like Solitaire — with a focus on improving mental acuity, memory and processing speed.

In March 2024, Solitaired "analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide , spanning 384 cities across 71 countries.

"We focused our analysis on keyword mentions indicative of a bored tourist. Those keywords were "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre," and "tedious.

"We ranked the attractions by the frequency with which tourists mentioned boredom-related keywords, comparing the mentions to the total reviews for each spot."

Parents are being hammered by rising childcare costs, according to a new study that suggests they may spend more than £160,000 raising their child to the age of 18.

Research by Hargreaves Lansdown has found that parents with children pay £6,969 a year more than couples without.

Over 18 years and assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%, that amounts to a whopping £163,175, the investment platform said.

Its study also found that parents were less likely to have money left at the end of the month.

Single parents carry the biggest burden, with the research suggesting they have just £85 left on average compared to £365 for couples with children.

Hargreaves Lansdown also found just 23% of single parents reported having enough emergency savings to cover at least three months' worth of essential expenses, compared to 63% of couples with children.

Parents are also at a slight disadvantage when it comes to pensions, the research found, with only 43% of couples with children on track for a moderate retirement income, compared to 47% without. Only 17% of single parents have a decent projected pension fund.

Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at the firm, said "having children is one of the most expensive decisions a person can make".

She adds that as a result of having a child, "financial resilience suffers across the board", and added: "For single parents, life is even tougher, and they face far lower resilience on almost every measure.

"It means we need all the help we can get."

One of the top stories shaking up the markets this morning is that UK-based mining company Anglo American has rejected a major $38.8bn (£31bn) takeover bid.

Details of the attempted buyout by Australian rival BHP emerged yesterday  - sending Anglo American shares soaring.

The deal would have created the world's biggest copper mining company - with the news coming as the price of the metal hit record highs this week.

However, Anglo American has now dismissed the proposal as "opportunistic" and said BHP had undervalued the company.

Anglo's shares are slightly down by 0.8% this morning - suggesting investors may not have given up hopes that a deal could eventually be agreed.

However, overall the FTSE 100 is up around 0.4% this morning, buoyed by strong reported earnings from US tech giants Microsoft and Google owner Alphabet.

It's helped the index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, hit yet another intraday (during the day) record of 8,136 points this morning.

The winning streak comes after a week of all-time highs on the index - including a record close of 8,078 points yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

Among the companies doing well this morning is NatWest - despite the bank reporting a fall in pre-tax profits of nearly 28% for the first quarter of the year.

Shares in the lender are up more than 3% after its results were better than expected by analysts.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16, almost on a par with yesterday.

Meanwhile, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil has crept up slightly to $89 (£71).

Self-checkouts - they're like marmite, people seem to either love them or hate them.

But the boss of Sainsbury's has claimed that his customers do  enjoy using self-checkouts, despite criticism that that machines don't always provide the convenience promised.

Simon Roberts told The Telegraph that there are more of them in Sainsbury's stores "than a number of years ago" as shoppers like the "speedy checkout".

But despite this, he said there won't be a time when they'll replace cashiers completely.

"Over the last year, where we've put more self-checkouts in, we're always making sure that the traditional kind of belted checkout is there," he said.

His comments come after northern supermarket Booths ditched self-checkouts at all but two of its sites after customer feedback.

Walmart and Costco in the US have also scaled back on the systems.

Let us know in the comments - do you love or hate self-checkouts?

We've all heard consumer advice that's repeated so often it almost becomes cliché. So, every Friday the Money team will get to the bottom of a different "fact" and decide whether it's a myth or must.

This week it is...

'Smart meters save you money'

For this one, we've enlisted the help of Dr Steve Buckley, also known as the Energy Doctor and head of data science at Loop...

So do smart meters help you save?

"The short answer is both yes and no," Steve says.

"Installing a smart meter by itself won't magically reduce your energy consumption. But, by giving you easy access to your energy usage data, smart meters pave the way for savings that you couldn't achieve otherwise."

Before smart meters, most households only found out how much energy they had used when the bill arrived.

By that stage it's too late to address wasteful usage, leading to what's known as "bill shock".

"With a smart meter, you can see your usage and costs in real-time through an in-home display or an app provided by your supplier," Steve says.

"This immediate feedback encourages you to use less energy. If you measure it, you can control it."

In 2022, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero found that homes with smart meters used about 3.4% less electricity and 3% less gas.

"This might not seem like a lot, but it adds up to a saving of over £50 per household annually," Steve says.

If all homes in the UK made similar cuts, that would amount to savings of around £1.5bn and a potential reduction in CO2 emissions by about 2.7m tonnes each year.

"Good for individual households but also great for the planet," Steve says.

Smart meters are often installed at no extra cost to the consumer - it's effectively free data for households.

Limitations

Smart meters are more or less what you make of them - a simple, free tool that allows you to see headline figures.

However, "without detailed analysis, it's tough to identify and eliminate" where you could be wasting money, Steve says.

Apps like Utrack, Loop and Hugo Energy can help you work out where you might be losing money by offering a more detailed breakdown if connected to your smart meter.

Those tools are often free, but you may need to register your card details as proof of address.

The tools give a number of useful insights, including looking at consumption in other households of similar size or monitoring where chunks of your money are going, such as to a faulty boiler or the "phantom load" (energy wasted by devices left on unnecessarily).

Myth or must?

Although smart meters alone don't reduce energy bills, they are a vital tool to help energy efficiency and cost savings.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without spending a lot.

In this series, which ends today after digging into yoghurt, bread, pasta, fruit juice and plant-based milk, we've tried to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value.

Sunna Van Kampen,  founder of  Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices, has given his input for the past six weeks.

And for the final part of the series, we're looking at the nation's favourite snack: crisps.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, but to help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

We're a people obsessed: in the UK, we get through six billion packets of crisps a year.

Sunna has three easy tips for finding the tastiest options that are kinder to your body...

1. Understand the fat facts

"Typical crisps can be oil sponges and contain over 30% fat from low-quality vegetable oils that have been fried," Sunna says.

"What we are on the lookout for those that buck the trend and stay away from the fat."

So, he says, aim for crisps that contain less than 15% total fat.

2. Fibre up your snack time

"While crisps aren't exactly salad, some can offer more nutritional value than others," Sunna says.

"Check the labels for options that have more fibre or protein."

These help you feel fuller for longer and also keep your digestive system happy.

3. Portion control

"It's easy to demolish an entire bag in one sitting - however, many brands offer multipack bags that are portion-controlled, usually around 25g a bag," Sunna says.

Sticking to these helps to manage calorie intake and stops overindulging.

The big picture

"Small changes might not immediately seem like a lot but if you eat a bag a day with your lunch, we are talking about up to a whopping two litres of oil cut from your diet over the course of the year," Sunna says,

"This is not permission to eat crisps every day (enjoy as an occasional treat) but rather an indication of how small changes add up quickly overtime."

The good news is Sunna's recommendations are all similar in price to their popular, fattier rivals - so you don't need to make a bigger investment to reap some health benefits.

We've included the prices for the brands' standard multipacks at Tesco - correct as of time of writing.

Walkers Oven Baked - £1.95 for six-pack

"Around £1.95 for a pack of six, these crisps are baked, not fried, slashing the fat content to 13%, so a great option."

Popchips - £2.25 for five-pack

"These have just 13% fat content as they're popped rather than fried so are a great way to go reducing fat without compromising on the crunch."

And for some non-crisp options...

ProperCorn Popcorn - £2 for six-pack

Often described as "the healthier, lighter option", Sunna says ProperCorn "isn't actually the best option on the market for fat content at 17.4%".

That being said, you do get "double the fibre of standard crisps at 10.9g per 100g".

At only £2 for a pack of six, it's well-priced, too.

Snack A Jacks - £2.20 for five-pack

"At only 8.3% fat per 100g, it's a great option at £2.20 for a pack of five."

Penn State Baked Pretzels - £1.50 for 175g bag

Now for Sunna's winner.

"The German classic is a great option at only 4.6% fat per 100g," he says.

One downfall is that they are not available in portioned bags, so be careful with the whole 175g bag for £1.50.

Want another option altogether?

"If you want to be even healthier, consider the switch to nuts, seeds or even dried cheese snacks," Sunna says.

"Higher in calories yes, but higher in good healthy fats too and are more satiating which will limit the chance of overeating."

The nutritionist's view -  from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food and health sciences at Teesside University...

"Baked instead of fried crisps is definitely a way forward as well as the popcorn suggestion," she says.

"We should also be aiming to look at the amount of protein and fibre found in products. For example, lentil and pea snacks are growing in popularity due to their higher protein and fibre values, so the focus should be more on looking for ingredients other than potatoes, oil and salt.

"I also feel 'crisp' based snacks made in an air fryer are becoming more popular. These can include a wholemeal wrap with a small amount of oil added, and placed in the air fryer with paprika and other seasoning added for flavour.

"Also, chickpeas in the air fryer make for a super delicious protein and fibre rich snack. They are cheaper than crisps and lower in fat since no oil has to be added."

Halifax has become the latest major lender to up mortgage rates.

They are putting up a range of deals by 0.2%.

BM Solutions also announced increases today.

It follows similar moves by TSB, NatWest, Virgin, Barclays, Accord, Leeds Building Society, HSBC and Coventry last week.

Lenders are responding to swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to lend money - rising on the back of higher than expected US inflation data, and concerns this could delay interest rate cuts there.

US trends often materialise elsewhere - though many economists are still expecting a base rate cut from 5.25% to 5% in the UK in June.

This is what average mortgage rates look like as of today...

Justin Moy, managing director of EHF Mortgages, told Newspage: "Yet more bad news for mortgage borrowers, as two of the biggest lenders announce increases to their fixed-rate products.

"As mortgage rates creep up and past 5% even for those with the largest deposits, we seem to be lacking a clear strategy of the government or the Bank of England on how rates will eventually fall.

"Even 2% inflation may not be enough to reverse the recent trends in rates."

Morrisons has launched two major changes for shoppers – with stores now offering travel money and trolleys featuring advertisements.

Announcing their bureau de change service, Morrisons said customers could exchange currencies in select stores or could place their money orders online at Morrisonstravelmoney.com.

Using the online service means customers can either click and collect their cash in certain Morrisons stores or at any of Eurochange's 240 branches. Alternatively, they can go for home delivery.

Services director at Morrisons, Jamie Winter, said the service "will provide our customers with easy access to a wide range of currencies at competitive exchange rates".

So far, stores in the following areas have travel money kiosks:

  • Basingstoke

In other news, the supermarket chain rolled out a new trolley advertising across 300 stores in a partnership with Retail Media Group.

A sweetener used in drinks, sauces, savoury and sweet foods and chewing gum can cause serious damage to people's health, according to a new study.

Neotame, a "relatively new" sweetener, could damage the intestine by causing damage to healthy bacteria in the gut, according to the study, leading it to become diseased and attack the gut wall.

The study by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, found the negative effect of neotame "has the potential to influence a range of gut functions resulting in poor gut health", potentially impacting metabolic and inflammatory diseases, neuropathic pain, and neurological conditions.

The illnesses this could lead to include irritable bowel disease or insulin resistance.

As we reported yesterday, a pilot programme is coming into force in Venice today that means visitors have to pay a €5 (£4.28) charge to enter the city.

Authorities say the pilot programme is designed to discourage tourists and thin the crowds that throng the canals during peak holiday season, making the city more liveable for residents.

Pictures have been emerging this morning of people queueing to register for a QR code that will allow them to enter after they have paid the charge - and officials carrying out checks on people inside the city.

People found to be contravening the rules can be fined up to €300 (£257).

As detailed in our story , the move has been met with anger among some in the city.

Venice is the first city in the world to introduce a payment system for tourists - but comments from its most senior tourist official suggested it may become a more common practice for major tourist hotspots in Europe.

Simone Venturini revealed the pilot programme was being closely watched by other places suffering from mass tourism - including other Italian art cities and hugely popular weekend-break destinations Barcelona and Amsterdam.

More than 160,000 people switched to Nationwide from other providers at the end of 2023, when the building society was offering a huge cash switching incentive.

According to figures from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS), Nationwide had a net gain of 163,363 account switchers between October and December, after leavers were taken into account.

It was the highest quarterly gain since the same period in 2022, when 111,941 switched to Nationwide.

The building society launched a £200 switching bonus for new joiners in September last year - the biggest giveaway on offer at the time. It withdrew the offer just before Christmas.

The latest CASS figures, which show Nationwide had 196,260 total gains before accounting for leavers, suggesting it could have spent up to £39m on nabbing customers from other providers in the last three months of the year.

Barclays and Lloyds Bank saw more modest net gains of 12,823 and 5,800 respectively, while the rest of the UK's big banks reported net losses.

NatWest and Halifax fared worst, losing over 40,000 more switchers each than they gained.

This week saw the last remaining switching offer on the market withdrawn.
