The Netflix movie is partly based on screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue’s real-life experiences: She told Tudum : "This idea was based off of the time in my life when, right after college, my safe stable boyfriend unexpectedly broke up with me right as I was about to leave for a five-week trip to Vietnam.

"While I was in Vietnam I realized that that relationship, which was a good one, wasn't actually the best fit for me."

A new romantic comedy to check out on Netflix is  A Tourist’s Guide to Love . It’s a feel-good film telling the love story between a travel executive and a Vietnamese expat tour guide. If the movie’s plot has piqued your interest, just wait until you find out who’s in the cast!

The story follows Amanda Riley, an American travel executive, who after experiencing an unexpected breakup, decides to accept a work assignment taking her to Vietnam. While in Vietnam, Amanda’s job is to work undercover to learn about the tourist industry in the country. But she was not expecting to fall head over heels for free-spirited tour guide Sinh.

Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda Riley

Rachael plays Amanda Riley, a travel executive who works for Tourista World Travel. Amanda thought her boyfriend of five years would be proposing to her only to find out he was breaking up with her “temporarily” and moving to Ohio. Heartbroken by the breakup, Amanda takes on a job assignment in Vietnam to take her mind off it not knowing she would be meeting her soulmate in the form of a tour guide there.

Rachael has been working as an actress since the late ’90s. She’s starred in the movies  The Baby-Sitters Club ,  She’s All That  and  Josie and the Pussycats . You might also recognize her from her roles in the films  Nancy Drew ,  A Midsummer Night’s Dream ,  Love, Guaranteed and  He’s All That .

Scott Ly as Sinh

Scott portrays the role of Sinh, a local tour guide in Vietnam who shows Amanda that adventure is often found off the beaten path. As Sinh shows Amanda around the country, they get to know one another and ultimately fall deeply in love.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love   is Scott’s first major film. He’s previously worked in television on shows such as  Criminal Minds , The Young and the Restless , Animal Kingdom and FBI: Most Wanted . Next, Scott will recur in HBO’s  The Sympathizer .

Missi Pyle as Mona

Missi plays Mona, Amanda’s boss at Tourista World Travel and close friend. Mona is very supportive of Amanda and only wants the best for her. That’s why when Amanda’s boyfriend breaks up with her, Mona suggests that Amanda go to Vietnam for work to take her mind off the breakup.

Missi has been working in the entertainment industry for quite some time. She’s known for her previous roles in the films  Galaxy Quest ,  Big Fish ,  Bringing Down the House , Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ,  Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay , Gone Girl  and  Ma . Besides acting, Missi has also worked as a singer. She and fellow actress Shawnee Smith created a country rock band called “Smith & Pyle.”

Ben Feldman as John

Ben plays John, Amanda’s boyfriend of five years who unexpectedly breaks up with her and moves to Ohio. Based on the trailer, it looks like John pops up in Vietnam hoping to win Amanda back. But who will Amanda ultimately choose: John or Sinh?

Ben is known for his roles in the films  The Perfect Man ,  Friday the 13th ,  Cloverfield  and  As Above ,  So Below . However, he’s best known for his role as Ron LaFlamme in the comedy series  Silicon Valley and his role as Jonah in Superstore .

Quinn Trúc Trần as Anh

Trần plays Anh, Sinh’s younger cousin and tour guide co-host.  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  is Trần’s second film. She previously starred in the Vietnamese rom-com  My Mr. Wife .

Nsưt Lê Thiện as Ba Noi

Lê Thiện plays Ba Noi, Sinh and Anh’s grandmother. She has had roles in Vietnamese movies and shows such as  Goodbye Mother , Until You , The Emperor’s Gift , Blood Moon Party and  Kumanthong .

Rachael Leigh Cook Falls For Vietnam — and a Local — in "A Tourist's Guide to Love" Trailer

One woman's real-life story of fate and exploration is getting the rom-com treatment. "A Tourist's Guide to Love," from writer Eirene Tran Donohue and director Steven K. Tsuchida, will begin streaming on April 21 on Netflix — and POPSUGAR has an exclusive first look at the trailer. Starring Rachael Leigh Cook, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" follows a travel executive on an undercover assignment in Vietnam shortly after an unexpected breakup. While there, the lines between work and pleasure blend as she finds herself falling for her tour guide, played by Scott Ly.

"Whenever I tell people about how I met my husband while traveling in Vietnam, they always say that it sounds like a movie, and so it's pretty surreal to actually turn it into one," writer Donohue tells POPSUGAR. "And while the story has changed a lot from my real life, the emotional truth is the same. That feeling when you meet someone who makes you realize that you can do or be anything. I'm so grateful to have found a partner who inspires and supports me and who, after 22 years together, keeps my life a romantic comedy instead of a drama."

Highlighting the rich culture of Vietnam was important for Donohue, and for the film's star and producer Cook, who fans first fell in love with in 1999's "She's All That." Filming the movie was the first time the actor and producer visited Vietnam, and she praises the country's people as being "so friendly, inclusive, loving, creative, and wholly unique." She tells POPSUGAR, "I feel very lucky to have been embraced by the people in the creative community there while we were making this film."

In addition to being ripped from her own life, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" writer Donohue says she found inspiration in "classic old Hollywood movies." Explains Donohue to POPSUGAR, "I was a big fan of Audrey Hepburn. So 'Roman Holiday' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' were a big influence. Then of course the classic '90s rom coms. 'Pretty Woman,' 'While You Were Sleeping' and 'Sleepless in Seattle.' More recently, I've definitely been inspired by 'Crazy Rich Asians.' For me it's really important to make sure that the romance is central and also that the main character isn't just interested in finding a man, but that they are searching for love. And that the love they find is worthy of them. I want the audience to emotionally connect with the characters and to feel like that big love is real and that it's possible for them too. Everyone deserves a big love."

After being blindsided by a breakup instead of the proposal she was expecting, Amanda heads to Vietnam for her job and tries to find herself while experiencing everything the country has to offer. With Sinh as her guide, it looks like she may find everything she is looking for and even something she isn't as she explores Vietnam. The provided synopsis gives a bit more details on the purpose of her trip.

After an unexpected breakup, a travel executive (Rachael Leigh Cook) accepts an assignment to go undercover and learn about the tourist industry in Vietnam. Along the way she finds adventure and romance with her Vietnamese expat tour guide (Scott Ly) when they decide to reroute the tour bus in order to explore life and love off the beaten path.

Despite being sent to learn about the tourist industry, with the help of Sinh, Amanda seems to discover something new about herself and figure out what, and who she wants. Based on the trailer, the film appears to have a pretty standard rom-com setup, with her ex-boyfriend even flying to Vietnam after her. Of course, this creates a love triangle between the guy she thought would marry and the one showing her around Vietnam.

It looks like audiences will get to see a variety of places around Vietnam, from the cities to farms out in the country. The trailer also features scenes of a dragon dance, which could hint at the time of year the film takes place and a lantern activity on a river or lake. The dragon dance is part of several different festivals, but as confirmed in Tudum , Amanda is traveling in Vietnam during Tết or the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. This will add to the cultural experience she, and the audience, have during the film.

True to the nature of Amanda's trip, production did take place throughout Vietnam in 2022. Director Steven K. Tsuchida described the experience of being one of the first American films to ever film entirely on location in Vietnam to Tudum.

"To be able to film in so many locations in Vietnam was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The excitement of [Ho Chi Minh City] was captivating, while the traditions of Hanoi were enriching. The diversity and culture of Da Nang, Hội An and My Son [sanctuary] was breathtaking. And living and filming in Hà Giang was spiritually moving."

The portrayal of the country, particularly because most American films featuring the area are about the Vietnam War , was essential to writer Eirene Donohue. When speaking with Tudum, the writer described what it meant to her to write a film taking place in Vietnam.

"There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren't about the trauma of war. It was really important to me to tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration. I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told."

Moreover, the film is personal to the writer. She experienced a similar breakup just before going to Vietnam for five weeks. While there, she met her life partner at the very end of her trip.

"On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous... He was supposed to be my holiday fling, [but] we have been together ever since — 22 years."

One woman's real-life story of fate and exploration is getting the rom-com treatment. "A Tourist's Guide to Love," from writer Eirene Tran Donohue and director Steven K. Tsuchida, will begin streaming on April 21 on Netflix — and POPSUGAR has an exclusive first look at the trailer. Starring Rachel Leigh Cook, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" follows a travel executive on an undercover assignment in Vietnam shortly after an unexpected breakup. While there, the lines between work and pleasure blend as she finds herself falling for her tour guide, played by Scott Ly.

"Whenever I tell people about how I met my husband while travelling in Vietnam, they always say that it sounds like a movie, and so it's pretty surreal to actually turn it into one," writer Donohue tells POPSUGAR. "And while the story has changed a lot from my real life, the emotional truth is the same. That feeling when you meet someone who makes you realise that you can do or be anything. I'm so grateful to have found a partner who inspires and supports me and who, after 22 years together, keeps my life a romantic comedy instead of a drama."

Highlighting the rich culture of Vietnam was important for Donohue, and for the films star and producer Cook, who fans first fell in love with in 1999's "She's All That." Filming the movie was the first time the actor and producer visited Vietnam, and she praises the country's people as being "so friendly, inclusive, loving, creative, and wholly unique." She tells POPSUGAR, "I feel very lucky to have been embraced by the people in the creative community there while we were making this film."

Fans have been falling back in love with rom-coms over the last few years, and Cook appreciates the unique take on the genre "A Tourist's Guide to Love" presents. She explains, "The aim of this film was not just to tell a love story, but to capture the sheer joy that can come with people from different cultures coming together and connecting over a shared, totally unique, and beautiful experience. This is a movie that is as much about loving life as it is another person."

In addition to being ripped from her own life, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" writer Donohue says she found inspiration in "classic old Hollywood movies." Explains Donohue to POPSUGAR, "I was a big fan of Audrey Hepburn. So 'Roman Holiday' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' were a big influence. Then of course the classic '90s rom coms. 'Pretty Woman,' 'While You Were Sleeping' and 'Sleepless in Seattle.' More recently, I've definitely been inspired by 'Crazy Rich Asians.' For me it's really important to make sure that the romance is central and also that the main character isn't just interested in finding a man, but that they are searching for love. And that the love they find is worthy of them. I want the audience to emotionally connect with the characters and to feel like that big love is real and that it's possible for them too. Everyone deserves a big love."

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is as harmless as its blandly forgettable title would suggest. It’s not quite a Movie to Fold Laundry To, because the scenery is quite lovely, so you’ll actually want to pay attention. But it is a pleasant escape if you’re seeking lazy Saturday afternoon viewing.

Rachael Leigh Cook brings her perky rom-com presence to this made-for-Netflix movie, which checks all the boxes you’d expect from such a slick and glossy example of the genre. Slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, wacky supporting characters, copious shopping montages, a love triangle, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”—they’re all there, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” an unusual feeling of novelty.

Director Steven K. Tsuchida , a TV veteran, was also behind 2021’s “ Resort to Love ,” another Netflix romantic comedy set in a picturesque vacation destination. This is pure formula, but the leads have such a sweet chemistry with each other, and the locations are so enticing, that you may as well just surrender.

Cook stars as Amanda Riley, an uptight, Los Angeles-based travel agent living a safe and predictable existence with her boring accountant boyfriend, John ( Ben Feldman ). Amanda’s boss (and apparently only friend), Mona ( Missi Pyle ), insists John is going to propose to her. Instead, he tells her he’s taking a job in Ohio and putting their relationship on hold. (Julia Shiplett makes the most of a brief supporting role as Amanda’s unimpressed manicurist.)

Stunned, Amanda agrees to Mona’s suggestion that she travel to Vietnam undercover to scope out a local tour company with the possibility of her firm buying it. This is also her chance to eat-pray-love her way out of heartache. Plus, she’ll be there for the annual Tet celebration, which just happens to be all about renewal. Would any of this actually happen in real life? No. Would a spoiled hotel heiress actually hit her head on a tree at a ski resort, suffer amnesia and fall for the hunky, widowed dad who owns a charming bed and breakfast? Probably not. We don’t watch these kinds of movies for realism.

And so Type-A Amanda becomes part of a tour group led by the handsome and soulful Sinh ( Scott Ly ) and his effervescent cousin, Anh (Quinn Truc Tran). Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue tries somewhat to flesh out the motley assemblage of fellow travelers, but she saddles them with awkward small talk, and no one is terribly interesting. The inordinately prepared Amanda insists on adhering to the itinerary because she wants to get the most out of her covert mission, but the easygoing Sinh takes a more spontaneous approach which—spoiler!—Amanda eventually learns to enjoy. Sinh also happens to have just the right profound thing to say for every occasion, which speaks to the flux in which Amanda finds herself. (Example: “A tourist wants to escape life. A traveler wants to experience it.”) Again, these are familiar types, but Cook’s likability softens her character’s pushy, impatient traits, and the charismatic Ly’s understated delivery makes Sinh’s platitudes less cheesy than they might sound.

Working with cinematographer Jon Keng and featuring plenty of shimmering aerial shots, Tsuchida makes every stop along the way seem vibrant and appealing, from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the beaches of Da Nang to the verdant hills of Sinh’s home village. “Doing nothing feels very weird,” Amanda admits while lounging under an umbrella by the sea, and truer words were never spoken.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, but you might actually find yourself caring about whether these two attractive-but-extremely-different people end up falling for each other in the end.

The Fall Guy takes a lot of liberties with the original television series that inspired it, making some serious changes in bringing the show to the big screen. Starring Lee Majors, Heather Thomas, and Douglass Barr, The Fall Guy aired for five seasons on ABC from 1981 to 1986. By contrast, 2024's The Fall Guy is a blockbuster movie that takes a far different approach to the adventures of Colt Seavers. Although both versions of The Fall Guy focuses on a Hollywood stuntman at the center of their story, they both approach the concept from a very different place.

In fact, the numerous differences between the show and the film make for a good case study in how far adaptations can go in reimagining their original concept, while still retaining the dangerous stunts that helped define The Fall Guy . While the first version of The Fall Guy was an episodic action-adventure series that would utilize a standard formula for over a hundred episodes, The Fall Guy 's characters are utilized in a far more directed satire of the modern film industry that infuses the action with a surprisingly sweet love story. The Fall Guy makes several major changes to the original TV series that inspired it, with many of the biggest changes directed at Colt Seavers . In the new film, Ryan Gosling's version of Colt is a long-time stuntman who worked his way up from the Universal Studios amusement park to blockbuster movies. However, while the film throws him into dangerous situations, he never necessarily goes looking for it himself. Instead, he gets wrapped up in the conspiracy concocted by Gail and Tom because of his drive to help Jody.

In the original TV show, Colt was far more active in jumping into danger. In the show, Colt was a stunt-man, but he was also a bounty hunter . This was the primary dive of the series, as Colt would split his time between on-set stunts and bringing down criminals. This was even the source of the show's title, as he became "the Fall Guy" for the justice system when criminals couldn't be caught by more conventional means.

9 Jody Isn't A Stunt Woman In 2024's The Fall Guy

In both versions of The Fall Guy , Jody is established as a fellow filmmaking professional alongside Colt. However, the two versions of Jody are different beyond those surface-level elements . In the original TV show, Jody Banks is a stuntwoman who joins Colt on many of his missions. Jody even took on assignments unrelated to Colt at times. By contrast, the film features Jody Moreno as a camera operator who eventually becomes a director herself, shifting her job to behind the camera.

Another major change to the film compared to the show is the relationship between Colt and Jody. In the film, the romance between Colt and Jody is central to the overarching plot , with their eventual reconciliation serving as the emotional coda of the film. In the original show, the pair were far more established as business partners and friends instead of being primarily a romantic couple.

8 The Film Cuts Most Of The Fall Guy's Supporting Cast

There's no howie, big jack, terri, or pearl in the new version of the fall guy.

Outside of Colt and Jody, the main characters of the original The Fall Guy are cut from the film. The most notable removal is the character of Howie Munson , who was played by Douglas Barr in the original show. An aspiring stuntman and Colt's cousin, Howie was an important ally to Colt and a frequent source of comedy on the show, with a handy set of abilities he picked up from an assortment of odd jobs. He also had a tendency to get his car destroyed by Colt.

The series also counted Colt's bail bondswomen as an important character. However, that role shifted over the course of the show's five-season run. Samantha "Big Jack" Jack (Jo Ann Pflug) served the role in season 1, and was replaced by Terri Shannon (Markie Post) for much of the show. After Post left the series to join the cast of Night Court , Pearl Sperling (Nedra Volz) took over as Colt's bondswoman ally in season 5. None of these characters appear in the cinematic version of The Fall Guy .

7 The Fall Guy Introduces Plenty Of New Characters

Dan tucker and alma milan weren't in the original version of the fall guy.

While The Fall Guy doesn't feature the show's more important supporting characters, it does introduce some new ones to flesh out the film. Two of the most prominent are Winston Duke's Dan Tucker and Stephanie Hsu's Alma Milan. Dan is a former stuntman and old friend of Colt who serves as a stunt supervisor on Jody's blockbuster film. Dan fills the role that Howie might have played in the film , serving as a more grounded friend to Colt and a crucial ally.

However, his own success and skills as a stuntman have earned Dan a more distinct role in the story than Howie might have. Alma, meanwhile, is more indicative of the film's satirical approach to the film industry , something the original show was less focused on. Alma is a more morally ambiguous character, who only helps the heroes after ensuring they'll help her in the aftermath of the film's release.

6 The Original Fall Guy Didn't Have A Central Villain Arc

While there were some longer storylines that would take up multiple parts, The Fall Guy largely operated at that level for five seasons .

By contrast, 2024's The Fall Guy has a definite villain in the duo of Tom Ryder and his frequent producer, Gail . The two are the central threat of The Fall Guy , luring Colt to set in a bid to frame him for the accidental murder of another stuntman. The modern version of The Fall Guy benefits from being a singular story, thus allowing it to have a central antagonist who serves as a direct contrast to Colt.

5 Colt's Iconic Truck Got A Modern Day Update

In both versions of The Fall Guy , Colt is shown driving a GMC Sierra . However, the truck goes through a modified origin and use in the film. The TV series frequently showcased Colt using a specific version of the GMC Sierra pick-up truck that had been customized to allow for longer and bigger jumps. In-universe, Colt utilized the car often. Even if the truck was heavily damaged in an episode, it would be repaired and ready to go by the next one.

In 2024's The Fall Guy , Colt also gets a GMC Sierra, albeit a modern version of the truck. However, the car doesn't actually belong to Colt . Instead, it's one of the trucks used on the set of Metalstorm . Colt only gets the keys to it after arriving at the film shoot. Although he puts the truck to good use during some of The Fall Guy 's dangerous action scenes and stunts , Colt doesn't simply get it repaired or replaced after losing it during a high-speed chase. Instead, Colt uses a number of other vehicles in the film, including a speed boat and a smaller stunt car.

4 Colt's Emotional Growth Is Unique To The Film

Colt's character arc in the new version of the fall guy makes him far more vulnerable.

Due to the episodic nature of the original version of The Fall Guy , there wasn't much in terms of major character development for Colt. The series needed to be accessible on an episode-by-episode basis, leading to a version of Colt who was far more static than his film counterpart . In the show, Colt is a rough but reliable hero, with a heart of gold despite his bruises and bumps. The cinematic take on Colt, reflecting a more modern sensibility with a definite character arc, is a far more emotional character.

Much of the character's personal and romantic arcs revolve around Colt's initial inability to actually open up and be vulnerable , something he admits to Jody is tough when you're a stuntman who needs to convey toughness at all times. This allows the film to take more time forcing Colt to open up and eventually reach a place where he can speak freely to Jody. This is something the TV version of Colt never did to such a degree, reflecting the show's more action-centric tone.

Ryan Gosling has not been a part of many movie franchises, but The Fall Guy seems to perfectly pave the for him to have a franchise under his belt.

3 The Fall Guy Almost Entirely Focuses On A Single Big Blockbuster

The Fall Guy series and film differ in a lot of ways, most notably in primary focus. As an episodic television series without an overarching plot, The Fall Guy would regularly bring Colt and his allies to new kinds of films and sets with every episode. This allowed the show to throw Colt into all sorts of film sets and different genres , ranging from spy films to Westerns. This also proved to be an easy way for the show to incorporate plenty of celebrity cameos, who could interact with Colt for an episode.

Being a far more focused feature-length narrative, The Fall Guy largely focuses on a single movie . While there are references to Colt's earlier work (one of which resulted in a nearly fatal injury for the stuntman), most of the film is centered around the production of Metalstorm . This focus is even baked into Colt's motivations, as he initially only searches for the missing Tom because the failure of the movie could derail Jody's career. As a result, the film doesn't feature many prominent cameos, although Jason Momoa features prominently as a gag at the end of the film.

2 The Fall Guy's Theme Song Got Some Lyrical Tweaks
