Explore historic Syracuse - Sicily

A trip to Syracuse is like taking a journey back in time. The Neapolis Archaeological Park is home to a fascinating collection of ancient monuments : the amphitheatre of Syracuse, where big cats and gladiators once fought; the Altar of Hieron; the Ear of Dionysius, an old quarry and former prison; and one of the most beautiful theatres in the Hellenic world. In Syracuse itself, visitors can explore the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, dating back to the 6th century BC, as well as the Temple of Athena and several 15th- and 16th-century palaces. Described as the most beautiful city in Greece by Cicero, Syracuse is a veritable living museum .

Try Italian cooking in Lipari - Sicily

Try Italian cooking in Lipari - Sicily

A classic Mediterranean fishing port, Lipari is the main town of the Aeolian Islands. The citadel that towers over the town symbolises the important role the island played in ancient times, a status it owed largely to its obsidian quarries. In this picturesque setting, a local restaurateur has decided to open the doors of their pizzeria to reveal the secrets of Italy's national dish, letting you prepare your own pizza to enjoy with a good wine and a selection of local specialities.

A 45-minute drive from the stylish village of Porto Cervo is the Nuraghe La Prisgiona , a partially restored Bronze Age archaeological site . The findings date back to the construction of the village between the 14th century and 9th centuries BC, with several mysterious towers , wells and imposing structures. Just 600 metres away lies the Giants' grave, a uniquely Sardinian collection of strange tombs, burial chambers and granite steles.

Discover Cagliari on foot - Sardinia

The capital of Sardinia has always played a vital strategic role. As you explore Cagliari , you are walking in the footsteps of the different civilisations that shaped it. The first evidence of human settlers dates back to the Neolithic era, but the city has known many different rulers over the centuries: the Carthaginians, who built a great necropolis; the Romans, who were responsible for the amphitheatre; the Byzantine Empire, which established the basilica; the Republic of Pisa; Habsburg Spain; and finally the Kingdom of Sardinia. Wonders await around every street corner!

Helpful tips

Dos. When in Rome... Dress to impress. The same rule also applies in Malta: appropriate attire is required in town and on the beach and can even be enforced by the police.

Don'ts. In Italy, adding parmesan to your pasta with fish or seafood may not go down well with the restaurateur. And remember, you can only order a cappuccino in the morning!

Unique features

When it comes to shopping, Malta an ingenious system all of its own. Forget supermarkets: you can buy everything you need, from washing powder to fresh fruit and vegetables, from the travelling shop parked at the corner of the street. Some locals prefer not to leave the house to do their shopping, relying instead on a system of baskets, ropes and pulleys to bring their provisions in through the window.

The local cuisine of Italy and Malta is rooted in the concept of " cucina povera ", which refers to the cooking of the poor. In short, it means preparing delicious gourmet dishes at a low cost. Sicily is the land of caponata , a stew of aubergine and tomatoes, and stuffed rice balls known as arancini . In Sardinia, you can enjoy some malloreddus , a type of gnocchi served with tomato sauce and local sausage. Myths and legends

Where is the mythical island of Ogygia , where Odysseus was held captive by Calypso? According to locals, it is actually the island of Gozo, which belongs to the Maltese archipelago. Ramla Beach, in the north of Gozo, has been identified as the home of the nymph. However, given that the location of Ogygia has been up for debate since ancient times, it is unlikely to be settled any time soon!

In the spotlight

The Nature Trust Malta NGO was founded in 1962 with the aim of protecting the Maltese environment and promoting responsible behaviour. The organisation offers visitors the opportunity to adopt a turtle for 25 or 50 euros per year via its website. The funds raised are used to finance the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which treats injured turtles.

Book. In working-class Sicily, people are breaking their backs just to get by, generation after generation. They are known as I Malavoglia , which means "The Reluctant Ones". Against this backdrop, the Toscani, a family of fishermen, are struggling to try to climb the social ladder. In a society that is weighted against them, changing their fate often seems like an impossible task. This classic novel by Giovanni Verga (2015, Dedalus Ltd) delivers a poignant family saga worthy of Zola, set in a Sicilian landscape that is dominated by the sea.

Music. Għana , the traditional music of Malta, draws on Italian and Arabic influences. It originated on the roof tops, where women used singing to communicate with one another. Today, Għana is an art in its own right, with a wide repertoire of quatrains and guitar melodies.

Film. The winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival, Padre Padrone (Vittorio and Paolo Taviani) is an adaptation of Gavino Ledda's autobiographical book. We follow Gavino from the age of five until he leaves for military service, where he is able to break free from the chains of his wasted childhood. As a child, he has to quit school to help his father work on the farm. In the mountains of Sardinia, Gavino is extremely isolated from society. Thanks to the army, he is finally able to learn to read and escape from under his father's thumb.

Facts and figures

Sicily is often associated with the number 3 : the island itself is triangular, a three-legged gorgon appears on the flag, it has three major mountains and three historical regions, and the strait that separates the south of the island from the boot of Italy is 3 km wide.

Malta, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica:

For centuries these four unique islands held the keys to the Mediterranean and in particular they where important for trading within the Mediterranean sea and you can learn more in this article on Malta, Sicily, Sardinia & Corsica . Over centuries, the Phoenicians , Carthaginians, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and French imprinted their distinct culture and architecture on the landscape of the islands. In the 19th century Malta secured the Mediterranean for Britain and helped make it the world's major maritime power. Possession of Sicily brought similar benefits to Rome , as did Corsica for France . Today, Sicily and Sardinia are both very different autonomous regions of Italy. Corsica is a rather reluctant part of France, and Malta is one of the more recent independent members of the European Union. Today, however, their inhabitants still retain their own distinctive characteristics and ways of life.

Itinerary of our Mediterranean Island tour

Each of the four islands visited has its own character, shaped by its history. Odyssey's small group educational tour compares and contrasts the culture, history, geography and peoples of these four unique islands. Throughout the tour you'll experience a number of cultural and historical highlights, from prehistoric settlements to idyllic resort towns.

Our tour spends five days in Malta and Gozo . Here we visit the city of Rabat, where we explore the grotto of St. Paul and investigate the stories about the antiquities referred to as the two fat ladies . According to Christian tradition, St. Paul lived and preached in these catacombs during three months in Malta in 60 AD. More recently, Malta was ruled by the Knights of St John as a vassal of Sicily. One of the famous knights of St john was the painter Caravaggio . The capital city, Valletta is UNESCO World Heritage listed as a testament to their influence. On a walking tour, we see the Grandmaster's Palace and the Cathedral of St. John. On our last day in Malta, we take a ferry trip to Gozo, the largest of the islands of Malta. Gozo is home to the megalithic Ggantija temples of Xaghra , which are an important prehistoric heritage site.

We then depart for Sicily . Our tour of Sicily begins with a walking tour of Noto , recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its grand baroque architecture. While in Sicily we also learn about Sicilian people and their Kings . We then explore Syracuse, home to ancient Greek ruins and a well-preserved Roman ruins. For more archaeological sites relating to the early history of Sicily , we then visit Agrigento , home to Greek temples. We also visit the Sicilian capital, Palermo , where we make a stop at the Arab-Norman Cappella Palatina, before making a daytrip to the famous cathedral of Monreale. Finally, we travel to Trapani, where we stay for two nights in a hotel. The streets of this medieval town by the sea remain largely untouched from the period of Arab and Norman rule. From Trapani, we make a day trip to the island of Mozia for an archaeological tour, and then head to Marsala for a wine tasting of its famous drop.

Following this, we fly to Cagliari in Sardinia. Sardinia is famous for its beautiful scenery: rocky cliffs, pristine beaches, and a rugged interior. Highlights of our tour of Sardinia include a visit to an Nuragic archaeological site in Barumini (Su Nuraxi Di Barumini), the remains of an ancient civilisation that inhabited the island between 1800 and 500 BCE. We also take a walking tour of the medieval town of Alghero and make a trip to Olbia, strikingly located on the Sardinian coast. We also make a boat tour of Maddalena Island. This archipelago is famous for its white sandy beaches, emerald sea, and deserted lagoons.

Finally, we get the ferry to Corsica. Though famous as the home of Napoleon Bonaparte, Corsica remains one of the least explored islands of the Mediterranean Sea. Our trip to this beautiful island begins with our arrival in Bonifacio, and then travel to Sartene and Propriano. From here we travel to the capital of Corsica, Ajaccio, which we use as a base to visit the Golfe de Porto, one of the most stunning pieces of coast in the entire Mediterranean.

Our destinations are home to some of the world's great cuisines. From the English-inflected cuisine of Malta, through the 'Italian with a twist' found in Sardinia and Sicily, to the unique cuisine of Corsica, we make sure that you are able to experience the local food culture. Each day, we eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner in a local restaurant. We also give you the opportunity to sample local wine and other delicacies.

Odyssey's guided tour of these Western Mediterranean islands is a magnificent holiday for those who wish to learn. Odyssey caters to mature travellers, whether couples or those journeying solo . The tour is fully escorted by an Odyssey Program Leader and professional English speaking local guides who share their expert knowledge of the history and culture of these wonderful islands. A short tour of just Malta & Sicily is also offered, click through to read about this program.

If your interest is in the Amalfi Coast, the cities of Northern Italy , or the spectacular Alps, don't click away! This tour is just one of many Italia tours operated by Odyssey each year.

The island of Sardinia is the second largest island of the Mediterranean but remains surprising unexplored. It has rugged mountainous interiors with stunning coastal scenery as well as quaint hilltop towns and pretty fishing ports. Sardinia has a rich Neolithic history and the island still boasts over 7,000 “nuraghi” fortified tower houses from a civilisation which lasted from 1800 to 500BC. Later the island was settled by the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Byzantines, and the Saracens. In the Middle Ages, the island was fought over by the Pisans and Genoese before falling to the Spanish in 1295. It briefly fell to the Austrians in 1713 before the Kingdom of Sardinia was created by Vittorio Amedeo of Savoy in 1718. Sardinia finally became part of the unified Italy in 1861. Many say that Sardinia offers an almost primeval landscape of rocks sculpted by the wind and sea. D.H Lawrence noted that the island was “left outside time and history.”

The island of Corsica is the fourth largest island of the Mediterranean and combines a stunning juxtaposition of mountain and coastal scenery. In the Middle Ages, Corsica was a colony of Pisa and later of Genoa but enjoyed a brief period of independence in the 18th century under the revered leadership of Pasquale Paoli. Therefore, the “sale” of the island by the Genoese to Louis XV of France for 40 million francs in 1769 has been a source of resentment for the islanders ever since. Ironically, the island was the birthplace of perhaps history’s most famous Frenchman, Napoleon Bonaparte, and French and other visitors outnumber the locals approximately 6 to 1 in the busy periods of July and August. For all of this, Corsica remains one of the last unspoiled corners of the Mediterranean: poor, depopulated, beautiful, old-fashioned, and aloof. Despite its history of conflict with France it has now come to an agreement with its dominant, continental neighbour, although there is still some talk of independence from France among the Corsicans. The tour was extremely informative and educational. Those 4 islands are uniquely different and we would not want to have missed any of them. The quality of your transportation and accommodations was exceptional as well. Larry S. Sep '19

This tour started out very well in Malta, with lots to see and do, and just kept getting better as we progressed through the other islands. It is a beautiful part of the world, with wonderful history and scenery. Pat C. March '19

Sunshine, blue seas and mountains were the backdrop to discovering so much of the history of these islands with a friendly group of fellow travellers. Suzanne W. Sep '18

The trip was well organised and communication was also good. Busy tour giving full educational history. The Odyssey Program leader was absolutely wonderful, I felt very safe particularly as she had both French and Italian and if we were without the guide in the evenings, she was able to communicate with the other person. We had particularly good guides all along the way, but perhaps Maria in Malta was very, very good as it was apparent she really loved showing her country and its history to us. Participant Sep '18

The great sea: a human history of the mediterranean.

David Abulafia

Connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Mediterranean Sea has been for millennia the place where religions, economies, and political systems met, clashed, influenced and absorbed one another. In this brilliant and expansive book, David Abulafia offers a fresh perspective by focusing on the sea itself: its practical importance for transport and sustenance; its dynamic role in the rise and fall of empires; and the remarkable cast of characters-sailors, merchants, migrants, pirates, pilgrims-who have crossed and re-crossed it.

Ranging from prehistory to the 21st century, The Great Sea is above all a history of human interaction. Interweaving major political and naval developments with the ebb and flow of trade, Abulafia explores how commercial competition in the Mediterranean created both rivalries and partnerships, with merchants acting as intermediaries between cultures, trading goods that were as exotic on one side of the sea as they were commonplace on the other. He stresses the remarkable ability of Mediterranean cultures to uphold the civilising ideal of convivencia, "living together."

Empires of the Sea: The Final Battle for the Mediterranean, 1521-1580

Roger Crowley

In 1521, Suleiman the Magnificent, Muslim ruler of the Ottoman Empire, dispatched an invasion fleet to the Christian island of Rhodes. This would prove to be the opening shot in an epic clash between rival empires and faiths for control of the Mediterranean and the center of the world. In Empires of the Sea, acclaimed historian Roger Crowley has written a thrilling account of this brutal decades-long battle between Christendom and Islam for the soul of Europe, a fast-paced tale of spiraling intensity that ranges from Istanbul to the Gates of Gibraltar. Crowley conjures up a wild cast of pirates, crusaders, and religious warriors struggling for supremacy and survival in a tale of slavery and galley warfare, desperate bravery and utter brutality. Empires of the Sea is a story of extraordinary color and incident, and provides a crucial context for our own clash of civilisations.

The Great Siege: Malta 1565

Ernle Bradford

Suleiman the Magnificent, the most powerful ruler in the world, was determined to conquer Europe. Only one thing stood in his way: a dot of an island in the Mediterranean called Malta, occupied by the Knights of St. John, the cream of the warriors of the Holy Roman Empire. A clash of civilizations the likes of which had not been seen since Persia invaded Greece was shaping up. Determined to capture Malta and use its port to launch operations against Europe, Suleiman sent an armada and an overwhelming army. A few thousand defenders in Fort St. Elmo fought to the last man, enduring cruel hardships. When they captured the fort, the Turks took no prisoners and mutilated the defenders’ bodies. Grand Master La Vallette of the Knights reciprocated by decapitating his Turkish prisoners and using their heads to cannonade the enemy. Then the battle for Malta began in earnest: no quarter asked, none given.

The Knights of Malta

This is the most complete history in any language of the Order of St John, or Knights Hospitaller, successively known as the Knights of Rhodes and of Malta. Founded in eleventh-century Jerusalem, the Order has played an important military, religious and political role over succeeding centuries. H.J.A. Sire not only provides a full narrative account, but describes and illustrates the architectural and artistic legacy of the Knights, from Crusader castles in the Holy Land, to the medieval city of Rhodes, the Maltese capital of Valletta, and manors, churches and fortified villages throughout Europe. These, as well as religious art, portraiture and illuminated manuscripts are copiously illustrated, revealing the wealth, culture and longevity of the Order. This is moreover the first general work to do full justice to the Order's international character by including a detailed account of its European Priories and the role played by the Knights in the history of their respective countries. It includes chapters on Crac des Chevaliers and other Hospitaller castles of the crusading period, on the career of Grand Master Heredia as a statesman and patron of medieval learning, and on the caring traditions of the Order. The chapter on the Navy of the Knights offers the first rigorous study of the Order's strategic naval role in the Mediterranean. The final section describes the resurgence of the Order since Napoleon's conquest of Malta in 1798, and its efforts over two centuries to recover an effective role. It considers the attempt in the 1950s to subject the Order to Vatican control, and its position today, under the first English Grand Master in its history. With its traditional rights of sovereignty widely recognised, and diplomatic relations established with an increasing number of countries, a modernised Order of over ten thousand Knights continues nine centuries of hospitaller work throughout the world.

A Brief History of the Knights Templar

Helen Nicholson

Much has been written about the Knights Templar in recent years, most of it highly speculative and with no historical foundation. Helen Nicholson is a leading specialist in the history of this legendary medieval order and offers here a full account of the knights of the order of the Temple of Solomon, bringing the latest findings to a general audience.

Sicily: Three Thousand Years of Human History

Sandra Benjamin

Tourists, armchair travelers, and historians will all delight in this fluid narrative that can be read straight through, dipped into over time, or used as a reference guide to each period in Sicily’s fascinating tale. Emigration of people from Sicily often overshadows the importance of the people who immigrated to the island through the centuries. These have included several who became Sicily’s rulers, along with Jews, Ligurians, and Albanians. Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Goths, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans, Hohenstaufens, Spaniards, Bourbons, the Savoy Kingdom of Italy and the modern era have all held sway, and left lasting influences on the island’s culture and architecture. Sicily’s character has also been determined by what passed it by: events that affected Europe generally, namely the Crusades and Columbus’s discovery of the Americas, remarkably had little influence on Italy’s most famous island. Maps, biographical notes, suggestions for further reading, a glossary, pronunciation keys, and much more make this unique book as essential as it is enjoyable.

Sicily: A Short History from the Greeks to Cosa Nostra

John Julius Norwich

Critically acclaimed author John Julius Norwich weaves the turbulent story of Sicily into a spellbinding narrative that places the island at the crossroads of world history.

"Sicily," said Goethe, "is the key to everything." It is the largest island in the Mediterranean, the stepping-stone between Europe and Africa, the link between the Latin West and the Greek East. Sicily’s strategic location has tempted Roman emperors, French princes, and Spanish kings. The subsequent struggles to conquer and keep it have played crucial roles in the rise and fall of the world’s most powerful dynasties.

Yet Sicily has often been little more than a footnote in books about other empires. John Julius Norwich’s engrossing narrative is the first to knit together all of the colourful strands of Sicilian history into a single comprehensive study. Here is a vivid, erudite, page-turning chronicle of an island and the remarkable kings, queens, and tyrants who fought to rule it. From its beginnings as a Greek city-state to its emergence as a multicultural trading hub during the Crusades, from the rebellion against Italian unification to the rise of the Mafia, the story of Sicily is rich with extraordinary moments and dramatic characters. Writing with his customary deftness and humour, Norwich outlines the surprising influence Sicily has had on world history—the Romans’ fascination with Greek civilization dates back to their sack of Sicily—and tells the story of one of the world’s most kaleidoscopic cultures in a galvanizing, contemporary way.

Reeds in the Wind

Grazia Deledda

The rugged landscape of Baronia on Sardinia sets the scene for this novel of crime, guilt and retribution. This novel presents the story of the Pintor sisters - from a family of noble landowners now in decline - their nephew Giacinto, and their servant Efix, who is trying to make up for a mysterious sin committed many years before. Around, below, and inside them the raging Mediterranean storms, the jagged mountains, the murmuring forests, and the gushing springs form a Greek chorus of witness to the tragic drama of this unforgiving land. Deledda tells her story with her characteristic love of the natural landscape and fascination with the folk culture of the island, with details about the famous religious festivals held in mountain encampments and the lore of the "dark beings who populate the Sardinian night, the fairies who live in rocks and caves, and the sprites with seven red caps who bother sleep."

Sea and Sardinia

D.H. Lawrence

David Herbert Richards Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, literary critic and painter who published under the name D. H. Lawrence. He is valued by many as a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism, as well as one of the finest writers in English literature. After the traumatic experience of World War I, Lawrence began what he termed his "savage pilgrimage," a time of voluntary exile, where he escaped with his wife from England and spent the remainder of his life travelling. In 1921, Lawrence joined the British literary tradition of writing a travelogue. He and his wife, Frieda, embarked on a journey to Sardinia for its promise of unspoiled primitiveness and lack of many tourists. "Sea and Sardinia" records Lawrence's voyage to Sardinia, revealing his response to the new landscape and inhabitants of this part of the Mediterranean. It is also a self-revealing journal in which Lawrence's passions, rages, and perspectives get frequent work-out.

Granite Island: A Portrait of Corsica

Dorothy Carrington

"Get away from here before you're completely bewitched and enslaved..." Dorothy Carrington was told, while sitting in a fisherman's cafe at the magically quiet midday hour. But enslaved she was. Granite Island, much more than a travel book, grew out of years spent in Corsica and is an incomparably vivid and delightful portrait. For the first time Corsica is brought to light as a vital element in Europe: a highly individualistic island culture whose people have nurtured their love of freedom and political justice, as well as their pride, hospitality and poetry.

Napoleon The Great

Andrew Roberts

From Andrew Roberts, author of the Sunday Times bestseller "The Storm of War", this is the definitive modern biography of Napoleon. Napoleon Bonaparte lived one of the most extraordinary of all human lives. In the space of just twenty years, from October 1795 when as a young artillery captain he cleared the streets of Paris of insurrectionists, to his final defeat at the (horribly mismanaged) battle of Waterloo in June 1815, Napoleon transformed France and Europe. After seizing power in a coup d'état he ended the corruption and incompetence into which the Revolution had descended. In a series of dazzling battles he reinvented the art of warfare; in peace, he completely remade the laws of France, modernised her systems of education and administration, and presided over a flourishing of the beautiful 'Empire style' in the arts.

The impossibility of defeating his most persistent enemy, Great Britain, led him to make draining and ultimately fatal expeditions into Spain and Russia, where half a million Frenchmen died and his Empire began to unravel. More than any other modern biographer, Andrew Roberts conveys Napoleon's tremendous energy, both physical and intellectual, and the attractiveness of his personality, even to his enemies. He has walked 53 of Napoleon's 60 battlefields, and has absorbed the gigantic new French edition of Napoleon's letters, which allows a complete re-evaluation of this exceptional man. He overturns many received opinions, including the myth of a great romance with Josephine: she took a lover immediately after their marriage, and, as Roberts shows, he had three times as many mistresses as he acknowledged.

Of the climactic Battle of Leipzig in 1813, as the fighting closed around them, a French sergeant-major wrote, 'No-one who has not experienced it can have any idea of the enthusiasm that burst forth among the half-starved, exhausted soldiers when the Emperor was there in person. If all were demoralised and he appeared, his presence was like an electric shock. All shouted "Vive l'Empereur!" and everyone charged blindly into the fire.' The reader of this biography will understand why this was so.

Sicily: A Short History, from the Greeks to Cosa Nostra

Sicily is the key to everything' Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The author of the classic book on Venice turns his sights to Sicily in this beautiful book full of maps and colour photographs.

'I discovered Sicily almost by mistake . . .We drove as far as Naples, then put the car on the night ferry to Palermo. There was a degree of excitement in the early hours when we passed Stromboli, emitting a rich glow every half-minute or so like an ogre puffing on an immense cigar; and a few hours later, in the early morning sunshine, we sailed into the Conca d'Oro, the Golden Shell, in which the city lies. Apart from the beauty of the setting, I remember being instantly struck by a change in atmosphere. The Strait of Messina is only a couple of miles across and the island is politically part of Italy; yet somehow one feels that one has entered a different world . . . This book is, among other things, an attempt to analyse why this should be.'

The stepping stone between Europe and Africa, the gateway between the East and the West, at once a stronghold, clearing-house and observation post, Sicily has been invaded and fought over by Phoenicians and Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, Goths and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Germans, Spaniards and the French for thousands of years. It has belonged to them all - and yet has properly been part of none.

John Julius Norwich was inspired to become a writer by his first visit in 1961 and this book is the result of a fascination that has lasted over half a century. In tracing its dark story, he attempts to explain the enigma that lies at the heart of the Mediterranean's largest island.

This vivid short history covers everything from erupting volcanoes to the assassination of Byzantine emperors, from Nelson's affair with Emma Hamilton to Garibaldi and the rise of the Mafia. Taking in the key buildings and towns, and packed with fascinating stories and unforgettable characters, Sicily is the book he was born to write.

Midnight in Sicily

A journey into the heart of Sicily, using art, food, history and literature to shed light on southern Italy's legacy of political corruption and violent crime. The book takes as its starting point the ongoing trial of seven-times Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti.

Discover the medieval harbor of bonifacio on the island of corsica.

In the 12th century, Boniface II of Tuscany built a fortified town at the tip of Corsica, perched above soaring white cliffs and crashing surf. The town of Bonifacio was meant to guard the Tuscan coast from Saracens and pirates, and its brilliant defensive position defied foreign assaults for centuries. The fjordlike harbor is only accessible to small ships and private yachts – oh, like the one you'll be sailing! Once ashore, you can hop a minitrain for a ride up to the citadel, wander the maze of medieval lanes, marvel at the fort and the breathtaking views, and drink in its turbulent history.

Ortygia, the magical little island within the island of Sicily

Cicero called Ortygia the most beautiful of Grecian cities, but that was then. Today, it's typically called the most beautiful of Italian cities, tucked away in the heart of Syracusa, on a romantic urban island of labyrinthine alleys, Greek temples, Baroque churches, palazzos of honey-hued stone, elegant piazzas, fountains, outdoor cafes, sea walls and promenades, and 3,000 years of history. From the Temple of Apollo to the Arab marketplace, the Byzantine church, the harborside medieval castle, and the anomalous statue of Athena atop the Duomo, the faded glories of past empires blend in this lively, enchanting place, a step outside of time.

The Mysterious Megalithic Temples of Malta

Legend says they were built by giants, a reasonable assumption since the Megalithic Temples on Malta are typically made of 50-ton stone blocks, piled 15 feet high. But more likely the prehistoric people who built them were normal sized, with technical skills beyond our expectations, which is why the temple complexes at Hagar Qim and Mnajdra in Qrendi, older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids, are UNESCO World Heritage sites, cultural monuments where you can delve into ancient mysteries and the building blocks of civilization.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

All Ponant ships have a licensed and registered physician onboard for professional and emergency services, which are available at customary charges. The ship's small infirmary is designed to provide medical care for certain temporary illnesses and accidents, and is not intended to or capable of providing on-going treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.

Ponant ships are registered in France. If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

To enjoy this cruise you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our onshore excursions. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.On board the ship, certain outer decks have been designated as non-smoking areas. There is no smoking permitted in the interior of the ship. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Some ship to shore transportation is by the ship's tenders. Occasionally you will get wet with spray.

Onboard ship, health and fitness devotees will find a spa and fitness center on Deck 7.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.  Guests must advise Tauck at the time of booking any food allergies or special dietary requirements.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Summer along the coast of Italy, France and in Malta ranges from very warm to hot, with temperatures often above 90°F (32°C) during the day and dropping only to 70°F (21°C) at night. In the fall the temperatures range from 60 to 80°F (16 to 27°C).

Rainfall can occur anytime throughout the year, though July and August are the driest months.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Southern France, coastal Italy and Malta in summer have very warm, if not hot, days and warm evenings, though at sea the evening breezes do provide cooler temperatures. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is always advisable. A light jacket or sweater for the evenings on deck is also recommended. Comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in are a must, as many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required for dining with your fellow guests at a Tauck provided dinner. When traveling abroad, you may have the opportunity to dine at an upscale restaurant on your own, which may require men to dress in coat and tie, and women in more elegant eveningwear.

Shipboard attire is casual and informal. The usual dinner dress aboard the Ponant ship   is also casual and relaxed; while a jacket and tie is not required, shorts and bathing attire are not appropriate at meal times. However, the Captain's dinners aboard the Ponant ship   are occasions for festive attire.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at all the hotels on this itinerary. On board, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are located in all hotel rooms and shipboard staterooms. Hair curling and clothes irons are not permitted onboard the ship for safety reasons.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise in the Mediterranean:

  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken in
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Collapsible trekking pole or walking stick
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Visit the Giants' grave in Porto Cervo - Sardinia

Visit the Giants' grave in Porto Cervo - Sardinia

A 45-minute drive from the stylish village of Porto Cervo is the Nuraghe La Prisgiona , a partially restored Bronze Age archaeological site . The findings date back to the construction of the village between the 14th century and 9th centuries BC, with several mysterious towers , wells and imposing structures. Just 600 metres away lies the Giants' grave, a uniquely Sardinian collection of strange tombs, burial chambers and granite steles.

Discover Cagliari on foot - Sardinia

Essential Italian phrases *

Hello / Good evening: Buongiorno / Buona sera Goodbye: Arrivederci Welcome: Benvenuto Excuse me / please: Scusi / Per favore Thank you: Grazie Yes / no: Si / No How are you?: Come sta ? Very well, thank you, and you?: Molto bene, grazie. E lei ? My name is…: Mi chiamo... *In Malta, the main foreign language taught and spoken is Italian. We therefore chose to focus on Italian vocabulary.

tours from malta to sardinia

The local cuisine of Italy and Malta is rooted in the concept of " cucina povera ", which refers to the cooking of the poor. In short, it means preparing delicious gourmet dishes at a low cost. Sicily is the land of caponata , a stew of aubergine and tomatoes, and stuffed rice balls known as arancini . In Sardinia, you can enjoy some malloreddus , a type of gnocchi served with tomato sauce and local sausage. Malta is home to ftira , a kind of pan bagnat coated with olive oil and filled with tomatoes, onions and garlic.

Sardinia is part of Italy - and it is not. Such a proud and ancient culture that have inhabited this island for millennia, it stands apart as a unique Mediterranean location that is distinctive and unusual.

From the Bronze Age Nuraghic structures - circular fortress-like buildings - to ancient Phoenician settlements, these are special places that you will see. We explore numerous cultural aspects, from the murals in the town of Orgosolo, to hearing 'canto a tenore' singing - unique to the central hills of Sardinia on our Sardinia tours.

Sardinia Tour Highlights:

  • Visit key locations in Sardinia such as Cagliari, Alghero, Oristano, Bosa, Orgosolo, Cabras and Nora.
  • See and understand how the mix of populations in Sardinia has produced a very specific influence on the island, from the early Phoenician dominance, right through to the more recent Catalan influences in the north west.
  • Experience cultural aspects that are unique to Sardinia – distinctive ‘canto tenore’ singing that is so different to musical styles found on mainland Italy; the Orgosolo murals representing the 20th century protest movement; the vibrant San Benedetto markets.
  • Our Sardinia tour has a culinary focus - during your week we’ll taste a wide range of fare, from the pasticcerias, the local breads, and meals that are specifically Sardinian, such as fregula (a couscous-like pasta) and pane frattau. You will notice a fusion of Spanish and Mediterranean influences in the cuisine.

ACCOMMODATION

We use good quality 4 star rated hotels located in Cagliari, Oristano and Alghero.

In Cagliari we stay in the historic central area in the Hotel Regina Margherita. The hotel is a modern, well presented establishment with a good restaurant and cocktail bar.

In Oristano we stay in a boutique hotel, the Hotel Duomo. This has many interesting features and you’ll love the lounge areas where you can relax and chat in the evenings.

Near Alghero we stay in either the Hotel Catalunya or the Hotel Punta Negra looking out over the coast – a fine way to end your week in Sardinia.

Some reviews of our tours:

“I only really wanted to feedback how much my sister and I had enjoyed being part of the Italy with Pleasure October 2022 small group tour in Sardinia. It was the first time either of us had visited the island and the tour certainly gave us a good introduction to its history and culture, in addition to seeing a lot of the countryside whilst being driven on the tour minibus. We much appreciated the informative Sardinia Tour 2022 booklet given to us at the introductory meeting with Marco, our guide for the week, as well as the other printed handouts given out during our visits. We were fortunate in having a beautiful warm sunny week for our visit - ideal sightseeing weather - and also fortunate that the summer crowds had mostly disappeared so that we often had the archaeological sites to ourselves. We enjoyed all of the visits and also having some free time most evenings to explore our new surroundings; Marco, our guide, was always on hand to give suggestions of things to do or places to eat and to make sure that no member of the group was ever excluded. Whilst it was my first time in Sardinia, I hope it will not be my last, and I have no hesitation in recommending a trip with Italy with Pleasure.”

“The tour was absolutely fabulous. I was able to see and experience things that created once in a lifetime memories. Riccardo was phenomenal. He made sure that our trip was perfect. Any question or request we had, he worked hard to answer/meet. He was so upbeat and fun while dealing with all of our varied personalities! Thanks again for a trip of a life!”

“Everything was perfect! They packaged the hotel, all meals, daily tours to a variety of very special and interesting sites, and handled all of the myriad of details seamlessly. The agency is very customer-service focused and was a pleasure to work with.”

“The tour was terrific as was the hotel accommodation, and Andy was the best! It was well organized and we didn’t skip a beat. That last night at the farmhouse was memorable and the perfect send-off. The tour guides in each of the cities we visited were well informed and did a great job explaining what we were seeing. I highly recommended Italy With Pleasure to people I know that might be interested in travel to Italy. The small group size, and in our tour, Andy, is what makes it happen.”

Day 1:  Buongiorno Sardinia - exploring Cagliari

Welcome to Sardinia, over this week you’ll start to uncover what makes this island special – fiercely independent, wonderful natural environments, unique historical sites, and a cuisine that is specifically ‘sarda’.

We start the tour in our centrally located hotel, right in the historic area of Cagliari.

Together we look through the Castello area, the oldest part of the city, located within the 14th century fortified walls and hemmed in by cliffs on either side. The history of invaders here, through the millennia, makes it understandable that people would live in this tightly packed district up on the hill.

We take a break back in the hotel, then meet and walk together to the Marina area. Here we share our first meal. The Sardinian cuisine is distinctly different from the Italian food that most of us know, the result of diverse influences.

The land where they raise their sheep and their fantastic pecorino cheese. The sea that has brought invaders and settlers to these shores, and the culinary traditions that have been absorbed and made their own. The breads such as carasau – wheat has been grown here since ancient Roman times, a local greeting is “saludi e trigu” (“good health and wheat”). Pasta that you don’t find in the rest of Italy, such as fregula (similar to couscous) and culurgionis (a type of ravioli). Through this week we will try all these foods and many more. We have an enjoyable start tonight.

Day 2: Nora Archaeological

In the morning we first drive a short distance to a viewpoint over the city, where you get another perspective on aspects of Cagliari.

We see the different wetlands that surround Cagliari, used for many centuries as salt pans.

We then leave the city and travel along the southern coastline to a place called Nora. This has a long history, from starting as a Phoenician settlement in the 8th century BC, then becoming a Roman town and port. It is the Roman town that we see today - the remains of what were elegant villas by the sea complete with detailed mosaic floors and ancient Roman roads.

Lunch is in the town of Pula.

In the afternoon we visit a place called Tuvixeddu. This is a necropolis, or burial area, used first by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC.

This is the largest Punic burial site, comprised of 1000 "well tombs" and reveals this cultures' belief in the afterlife.

We arrive back in Cagliari in the late afternoon.

Cagliari, Sardinia small group tours of Italy

Day 3 - Nuraghic Bronze Age Sites - Su Nuraxi

We first visit the San Benedetto markets. This is the key point for the trade of all types of fresh food for the city – some of which you’ll be tempted by, some that is a bit more challenging. In these markets you see how the locals shop, what they buy, what is fresh, and what is caught in this part of the Mediterranean sea.

Next we go further back in time, yesterday’s ancient Roman town being just an introduction. Our focus today is on the Nuraghic civilisation, a Bronze Age population that lived on Sardinia. They have left some impressive markers of their presence here. Firstly we see a nuraghi, a fortified structure with almost a beehive shape, built of basalt blocks. The nuraghi that we visit in Barumini is called Su Nuraxu and is the largest of these ancient fortresses. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The original settlement dates from 1500 BC, with constant habitation for over 2000 years. This is a physical timeline of Sardinia.

After lunch in a charming agriturismo nearby we continue on to another Bronze Age site. This is known as the ‘tomb of the giants’, or locally as ‘Sa Domu and S’Orcu’. This is like nothing else that you see in Italy - the size of the stone blocks, the fascinating shape, and also just the simplicity and scale of the structure situated up on a hilltop as a monument to a forgotten time. The tomb, as well as its burial function, may have been dedicated to the god Taurus.

We continue on to our hotel in the town of Oristano, arriving in the early evening.

Nuraghi Sardinia small group tours of Italy

Day 4 - Giants of Mont’e Prama – Santa Cristina

From our base in Oristano we have a wealth of things to see and do in close proximity on the Sinis Peninsula. Firstly we visit the village of San Salvatore. The village itself is unlike any other town in Sardinia, with its narrow lanes lined with rows of tiny houses - in fact it has been used many times as a film set for these reasons.

We then view the ancient site of Tharros. Situated on a peninsula, this has been a prized location since Phoenician times.

Moving on to the archaeological museum in the town of Cabras, we see the statues known as the ‘giants of Mont’e Prama’. These recently found monolithic artifacts, carved in the Iron Age (900 BC), are unlike anything that you normally associate with Italian history. They were found in this area. Also in this museum we see many of the Punic and Roman items found in the nearby archaeological area of Tharros.

After a seaside lunch, we travel to the village of Santa Cristina. Here we find a sacred well, over 3000 years old and incredible for the precision of its construction. The feeling of this being a sacred place is pervasive, and we marvel at how the structure is aligned with celestial bodies.

The village of San Salvatore Sardinia Italy

Day 5: Orgosolo Murals – Canto Tenore Singing

As a contrast to yesterday’s coastal jaunt, today we head inland, into the mountainous interior. First we visit the town of Orgosolo. This is the key mural town of Sardinia, with numerous building painted with local scenes, slogans, and an incredible variety of weird and wonderful things. We look around the town centre with a local guide. Learning about Orgosolo and the history of these murals reveals much about the more recent history of Sardinia, and the challenges and aspirations of the people who live here.

For lunch we visit one of the large forest parks that cover much of this central area, the Supramonte. We dine on the traditional foods cooked on an open grill, enjoyed outdoors in a casual setting.

After lunch we have a very special performance of ‘canto tenore‘ - most visitors to Sardinia do not get to experience this local polyphonic singing method. Canto tenore consists of three men singing together with different tones, creating a curious effect, while a fourth sings or chants a poem. This type of singing is specific to this Barbagia region of Sardinia and is recognised by UNESCO with its inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During the afternoon we reach our final destination, Alghero.

Orgosolo Murals - Sardinia small group tours Italy

Day 6: Alghero

In the morning we walk together through the historic centre of Alghero, looking at the aspects that make this such a fascinating city.

Alghero has a culture that is distinctly different from the rest of Sardinia. The key influences here are Spanish, following the conquering of the city by the Aragonese in the 14th century. The local dialect is closely related to Catalan. The old town has a superb seaside location, and much to discover. We leave you some free time to wander the lanes of the town or to enjoy the waterfront cafes.

The cuisine here is also heavily influenced by the Spanish, with paella being the signature dish.

The old town has a superb seaside location, and much to discover. There are numerous cafes along the walls and bastions of the old town, where we can enjoy a coffee looking out to sea.

Next we travel to a Bombarde beach. Sardinia is famed for its turquoise clear waters and great beaches, and we give you some time to relax on the beach, have a swim or just take it easy in the cafe nearby. Those that prefer not to have beach time will be dropped back to the hotel.

In the evening we cap off the week with ‘the last supper’, our final Sardinian meal together.

Day 7 - Arrivederci

As we have now reached the end of our tour, we drop off at Alghero’s airport nearby and bid you “buon viaggio”.

Seriously amazing trip of a lifetime. We did this to celebrate my husband’s big birthday and we could not have asked for anything better. It is the top trip we have ever taken.

Cycling in Sardinia Tour

Cycling in Sardinia

My husband and I had a wonderful time touring the west coast of Sardegna. The scenery was absolutely magical. The level of riding was on the high end of medium difficulty. We could not have completed the 320 kms in 6 days without the e-bikes. The gps app was fantastic. We were leary about going self-guided prior to the tour, but the gps app made it very easy to navigate. The accommodations were a bit volatile, some nice, some not so nice. First, one of the agritourismos charged us 40 euro per person for a very mediocre meal. Unfortunately, we had to eat there as there were no other options. Additionally, they had a mean little dog that unprovoked, nipped my husband (Sa Perda Mercada). Secondly, in Gonessa at B&B Domus de Janas, there was hardly a breakfast and it wasn't easy getting access to the accommodation, i.e no service. Of the other accommodations, Villa Canu and Hotel Le Torri were nice because they had pools, Muma Hostel was acceptable, agritourismo Terranieddas was in a beautiful setting and they served a wonderful meal for 30 euro which they let us split, i.e. 15 euro per person, the Marin hotel was just ok, but they had extremely friendly and helpful employees and the best breakfast of the trip. Additionally, I didn't find the man that ran the orientation (and also led the guided tour) very friendly or helpful to those not on the guided tour. Finally, it would improve the tour for the non-guided participants if the gps routes had more information regarding stops for drinks and food along the way. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip, met some nice people along the way and we would definitely, highly recommend this trip to others. We only offer criticisms to help better the Dolcevita experience for future participants.

Malta Or Sardinia: An Honest Comparison To Help You Choose!

C hoosing between Malta or Sardinia for your next holiday destination is a tough choice, with both boasting captivating landscapes, stunning beaches, and scrumptious cuisine.

However despite the similarities, these destinations provide very different holidays.

Sardinia is around 80x larger than Malta, has many more things to do, and you can still find areas of the island that are peaceful and little changed in generations.

Malta, on the other hand, is very tourist-orientated, but as the island is so small it’s easy to travel around and see many of the highlights on your holiday. English is widely spoken too, which makes it a popular destination for English speakers.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how different Malta and Sardinia are….

That’s where we can help! As we have visited both, we are going to help you decide which one will suit you best.

Spanning natural and historical sights, cuisine, culture and more, we’ve put together our honest guide to choosing between Malta or Sardinia, so you can pick the holiday destination that suits you best.

Which Has The Best Beaches & Landscape?

Which has the best cities & towns, how does the food scene compare, where to stay according to your budget.

An infographic pitting Sardinia vs Malta and showing some of the key differences that will be discovered later in the article.

Both Malta and Sardinia are full of beautiful natural wonders, captivating coastlines, and places to explore.

Malta is smaller and therefore the whole of the island is m ore accessible so it’s easy to squeeze in more sights. However bigger Sardinia is perfect for leisurely beach holidays, enjoying nature, and mountain hikes.

Y ou may need a rental car to experience the wh o le island, but if y ou’re l o oking f or a vacati on with many things t o d o away fr om the coastline, Sardinia could be the better ch oice than Malta.

Below we look at both destinations in detail, showing you how the landscapes, coast and beaches compare.

View from above, stunning aerial view of a person walking on a beautiful beach bathed by a turquoise sea. Liscia Ruja, Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy.

Malta: The Beaches & Landscape

The first thing you’ll notice is a lack of forests and greenery in Malta. Sardinia on the other hand has m ountains, f orests, hiking trai ls and much greenery in land. So if you’re looking for hiking and nature, Sardinia will likely be a better choice than Malta.

Still, Malta’s limestone cliffs and red sand beaches are unparalleled in their beauty.

There’s also dozens of fantastic walks on the island that showcase it’s stunning scenery. This map highlights some of the best, as does this walking on Malta book.

The archipelago is also a haven for snorkelers and divers who can explore wrecks, caves, and coves.

Malta’s famous Azure Window collapsed into the sea, but divers are now taking the opportunity to breathe new life into the natural landmark by visiting it underwater.

Over on Gozo is Inland Sea , a large lagoon brimming with small fishing boats in the summer to take visitors to Fungus Rock and the gorgeous cliffs that surround Dwejra Bay. It’s also a popular diving spot!

Gozo is also home to the Qbajjar Gozo Saltpans , the impressive Roman sea salt repositories.

All in all, Malta’s small size makes it a great pocket destination if you’re looking for a place where you can see all the natural wonders in one holiday. From snorkeling in the sea, to checking out salt pans or hiking the coastal cliffs.

Sardinia: The Beaches & Landscape

Sardinia is more of the c lassic beach destinati on than Malta and definitely has the nicer beaches of the two, but it a ls o has a g orge ous m ountain ous inland we l l w orth exp l oring.

You’ll find that English isn’t widely spoken in parts of Sardinia though – especially in rural areas – so getting around could be more challenging than in Malta, where around 90% of the population speaks English!

Still potential language issues shouldn’t be a reason not to visit Sardinia and its array of natural sights.

Neptune’s Grotto is one of those must-visit sights. This unique cave in Sardinia has magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations that are named after the Roman god of the sea. The cave can be accessed by boat from the pretty port of Alghero or on foot.

Visit Bear Rock ‘Capo d’Orso’ for 360-degree views over the archipelago of La Maddalena , Palau, and the old military Forte di Capo d’Orso.

While Sardinia attracts many beach-goers, it also has an adventurous side. And a lot of the island’s rich history can be explored on foot as Sardinia is covered in hundreds of kilometers of picturesque trails. You can see 50 of some of the best walks in this fantastic little book.

One of our favorite walks is a two-hour hike through the ancient Nuragic settlement of Tiscali that will bring you to Su Gorroppu Gorge where it’s reported to have stars at the bottom of the gorge! While that’s unlikely of course, the hike is beautiful and well worth doing.

Inside the island’s largest cave Grotto di Ispinigoli stare into the Abbisso delle Vergini (Abyss of the Virgins) as you are guided through this extensive cave network.

Furthermore, as you’re in Sardinia you must check out some of the most beautiful beaches offering turquoise waters and watersports. Some of our favorites are Spiaggia della Pelosa (Stintino) and La Caletta.

Visit the incredible color changing waters at Is Arutas (Cabras) and Cala Brandinchi (San Teodoro) too, otherwise known as Little Tahiti!

In general if you’re looking for the best beaches, or some fantastic hikes, then Sardinia is going to be a better option than Malta. The only downsides is the island is quite large so getting places can take a while, and English isn’t widely spoken in rural areas.

Both Malta and Sardinia have long colorful histories, and have played host to different civilizations over many centuries. As a result, both islands have an incredible array of ancient towns, and unique sights to see and visit.

Architecturally beautiful cities like Sardinian’s Cagliari and Malta’s Valetta are bound to impress, but you’ll find history in the rural settings of both islands too.

Below we take a look at the highlights in each destination, so you can see which one you’ll prefer:

Malta: The Cities & Towns

On the island nation of Malta, they are re-energizing their cities with contemporary architecture, but they also work hard to preserve their past.

The Knights of Saint John built the capital of Valletta in the 16th century in a grid-like system. Its early Baroque façades are dazzling, and historic attractions include the ancient St John’s Co-Cathedral , Teatru Manoel , and Grandmaster’s Palace .

Valletta is rich in historical sites, but visionary contemporary buildings such as the Valletta City Gate have reinvigorated this ancient city. A boat ride across the Grand Harbor is also a must, even for short-term tourists.

Peppering the landscape of Malta are Megalithic Temples which are 5–6,000 years old! Discover the Tarxien Temple Complex in the south of Malta or travel across to Ggantija on Gozo to see structures built before the pyramids of Egypt!

Finally, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an ancient burial ground in Malta which allows visitors to travel back in time to 4,000 B.C.  If you’re looking for a window into the past, then Malta can provide just that.

Fortified Birgu , Senglea , and Cospicua are referred to as the ‘Three Cities’ and are often forgotten about in the eyes of tourists, but they offer a slice of authentic Maltese life.

In the center of Malta is Mdina , an ancient and small, fortified town which also goes by the name, ‘The Silent City’. Its streets are a maze of hidden courtyards and limestone buildings.

While on the small island of Gozo, all visitors are drawn to the medieval city of Rabat (Victoria) with its Citadel visible from everywhere on the island. It’s the cultural center of Gozo, with bustling markets and a friendly ambience.

Sardinia: The Cities & Towns

Archaeologically rich Sardinia contains the Nuraghe – Bronze Age structures in various places across the island, with the best-preserved found in Arzachena in the north near Olbia, as well as Barumini in the south near Cagliari.

The Mamoiada Masks Museum can be found in the small town of Mamoiada – a town famous for these masks and used for the island’s Carnival – the museum is a great window in a slice of Sardinian culture.

For a look into the culture of the past, find textiles, paintings and jewelry in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Cagliari , the capital of the island.

The capital is big, bustling, but beautiful. And has everything you’d want from an Italian city, from great eateries to a top football team to go watch!

In the ancient town of Noro near Cagliari are Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman ruins and if you choose to go diving here, you might discover why this is referred to as the ‘Sunken City’.

This island was once known as Italy’s ‘Wild West’ and in the town of Orgaloso , you’ll find a former bandits’ stronghold which is now famous for the political murals on its walls. This National Geographic map of Sardinia is also incredibly useful, highlighting attractions and walks.

It’s hard to separate Malta and Sardinia when it comes to which destination is best when it comes to cities, culture and historical sights. In both you will be able to walk amongst ruins, and down ancient streets that have been hubs of human life for centuries.

Malta: The Food

There’s an emphasis put on local ingredients in Malta such as rabbit and honey with Sicilian and Middle Eastern flavors.

In Valletta, take in the Is-Suq tal-Belt food market which is situated in an old derelict Victorian building and let your taste buds run wild.

Try local delicacies such as Timpana (baked macaroni), Gjebna cheese, Aljotta (fish soup) and Zalzett Tal-Malti, a local Maltese sausage.

Pastries in Malta are called Pastizzi , and a favourite for locals is Imqaret , a fried date pastry.

Seafood platter served in mediterranean restaurant

Sardinia: The Food

Sardinian cuisine is a balance of seafood, pasta and meat. Try a Sardinian octopus’ salad and culurgiones – a home-made pasta dumpling filled with creamed mint and potato.

A delicacy called “ bottarga ,” is a delicious mullet roe and the town of Carloforte is best known for its raw and rare tuna.

Wines are another big deal here. Try dry white Vermentino di Gallura or aromatic Funtanaliras.

For dessert try a seada , a fried dessert pastry stuffed with lemon-scented cheese and choose from either warm honey or sugar on top.

If you fall in love with Sardinian food (and who wouldn’t!) then Letitia Clark’s recipe book, Bitter Honey: Recipes and Stories from the Island of Sardinia will help bring those holiday memories flooding back.

Budget: With gorgeous views of Valetta and the Grand Harbour, it’s little surprise BOCO Boutique Hotel is often booked months in advance. The service is fantastic too, as is the Maltese breakfast in the morning. See photos and rates!

Luxury: The five-star Hyatt Regency Malta sits in a wonderful sea-front location in St Julian’s. From the outdoor pool through to the views, everything is photogenic and oozes luxury. See photos and rates!

Budget: Hotel La Bitta sits right beside one of the best white sand beaches in Sardinia, has breathtaking ocean views, a fantastic pool, spa services and even a Turkish bath! It’s perfect for a relaxing stay, and at a very good price point considering the location and what they offer. See photos and rates!

Luxury: Looking for luxury and celebrity treatment? Then La Villa Del Re , a five-star, adults only resort which has its own private beach is well worth looking into. Alongside the stunning ocean views you can enjoy while relaxing in the outdoor pool, this resort also offers plenty of watersports. See photos and rates!

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
