Using Canada’s COVID-19 proof of vaccination for travel

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

Backgrounder

canadian-covid-19-proof-vaccination

The Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination provides Canadian residents with a reliable way to demonstrate that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 when travelling within and outside Canada. Canadians can get their proof of vaccination from their province or territory (for more information, visit Canada.ca/vaccine-proof ).

Each country decides what type of vaccination proof is required, the types of vaccines they accept, the number of doses required, and any exemptions to public health measures. Even with a Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination, a traveller may not be considered fully vaccinated in another country. Canadians should always check the entry and public health requirements of their destination country, as well as the Government of Canada’s travel advice and advisories , before booking a trip. It’s also important they understand their obligations and the entry requirements for returning to Canada.

Designed to protect privacy and share COVID-19 vaccination information safely

The information on the proof of vaccination is limited to

  • the holder’s full name and date of birth
  • the number of doses
  • the vaccine type(s), product name(s) and lot number(s)
  • the dates they got their vaccinations
  • a QR code that includes the vaccination history and may include additional information on the COVID-19 vaccines received

The only medical information shown is a person’s COVID-19 vaccination history. The proof, including the QR code, does not contain any additional medical or identity information.

A common look across Canada based on the SMART Health Card standard

The Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination was designed with a common look that features the Canada wordmark. It will allow other countries and transportation providers, such as airlines and cruise ship operators, to recognize the proof as a trusted Canadian document regardless of the province or territory that issued it.

The proof also complies with the SMART Health Card standard, which is used and recognized by many top travel destinations for Canadian travellers. The Government of Canada is actively engaging international partners to seek recognition and acceptance of the Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination abroad. The SMART Health Card

  • is a secure and verifiable health record that is digitally signed by a trusted authority (for example, the issuing province or territory)
  • uses technology that allows officials to verify and authenticate the information without giving access to other health or identity information
  • prevents forgeries and tampering by detecting any changes to the document after it has been issued
  • allows users to hold a digital copy on a portable device, such as a mobile phone or tablet, or to print a copy directly or via a request to their provincial or territorial government, where available

ArriveCAN updates for travellers entering Canada

All travellers must submit mandatory information in ArriveCAN (mobile app or online at Canada.ca/ArriveCAN ) within 72 hours before arrival in Canada. To qualify for public health exemptions, travellers must meet the definition of a fully vaccinated traveller and upload their proof of vaccination. Final determination on whether they benefit from the modified provisions for fully vaccinated travellers is made at the border. Travellers must bring a digital or paper copy of their proof of vaccination with them.

ArriveCAN has been updated to digitally verify the authenticity of the new Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination, allowing Canadian officials to easily review it at the border. ArriveCAN users should update their app to ensure the latest functionality. If travellers do not have this new proof, they can continue to upload other proofs of vaccination in ArriveCAN.

Acceptance of mixed vaccine doses internationally

Canadians vaccinated with mixed vaccine doses followed recommendations made by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization to protect themselves and their communities. It is important that they are able to travel with the associated benefits of vaccination.

As of November 8, 2021, Canadians vaccinated with any combination of 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized by U.S. regulators or the World Health Organization will be considered fully vaccinated and able to enter the United States. The Government of Canada is actively engaging other countries and international partners to encourage them to recognize those who have received mixed vaccine schedules or extended dose intervals as being fully vaccinated. This includes sharing Canada’s evidence and experience with mixed schedules of Health Canada-authorized vaccines for both AstraZeneca/mRNA and mixed mRNA doses. Initial outreach has focused on the ongoing exchange of technical and scientific information to advance this time-sensitive work.

The first priority for engagement has focused on national health and scientific decision-making authorities with significant impact and influence and with whom Canada has close, trusted relationships, including the U.S. and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The Government of Canada is also engaging with the World Health Organization given its global influence, and has successfully secured supportive commitments to recognize mixed vaccine schedules in numerous G7 and G20 Health Declarations issued in the last several weeks.

Using the proof of vaccination for travel in Canada

The Canadian COVID-19 proof of vaccination offers multiple benefits and uses, which includes meeting Canada’s new traveller vaccine requirements.

Effective October 30, 2021, all travellers 12 years of age and older departing from Canadian airports, and travellers on VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer trains, will be required to be fully vaccinated in order to travel. To allow travellers time to become fully vaccinated, there will be a short transition period where they will be able to travel if they show a valid COVID-19 molecular test within 72 hours of travel as an alternative to providing proof of full vaccination. If travellers have not already started the vaccination process, or do not start soon, they risk not qualifying for travel as of November 30, 2021.

16 Best Travel Apps for Canada

Best travel apps on your phone makes travelling easier and more fun

For most of us, our Smartphone has become our constant companion and we can’t imagine life without them when it comes to planning vacation . Travel apps are extremely useful for booking and managing a trip.

Table of Contents

My Favourite Travel Apps for Canada

Travel apps help you with checking on visa requirements, booking accommodation, and last-minute flight changes. They navigate for you, make currency conversions and help you with language translations. Whatever you need when you hit the road, there is a travel app to help you with it.

With a huge selection of travel apps available for everything we can think of it is challenging to pick the most useful ones for our trip. Here are 12 travel apps you don’t want to miss when touring Canada.

1. Airline Apps

Whatever airlines you use to fly to Canada, make sure to download the travel apps of the carriers you’re flying with.

It is crucial to keep the Airline travel apps updated, especially the night before you start your trip. You want the newest versions of all the airline apps you’re intending to use. Always turn on push notifications so that the app can reach you.

With an airline app, you can book, change or cancel your flight, check in and get your boarding pass. It notifies you about your flight’s status, boarding times and more. On top of all that you can use your phone to scan a boarding pass, you will receive updates on your checked bags, changes in gates and any delays in boarding. I appreciate this service, especially in winter when flights in Canada sometimes get cancelled or delayed because of severe weather conditions. With the airline app, I get notified before I waste my trip to the airport and I can book myself onto another flight.

Here you can check if you need a visa or health declaration for your next trip. If you do need a visa, you can get it with a few clicks. iVisa also helps with passport applications, passport photos and photo ID. No need to struggle with government forms, waiting in lines, or trips to the embassy. You can get your travel documents with a secure and 100% online application process.

Searching for cheap flights can be a time-consuming process. Try Hopper, the easy-to-use Hopper travel app that analyzes countless flight prices and lets you know if the time was good to purchase a ticket on a particular route. The app provides you with an estimated time frame for a potential price drop and suggests when you should book before a likely price hike. You can save the routes and you will be notified when the price goes down.

4. TripCase

TripCase is one of my favourite travel apps. Much superior to any airline app, it’s more useful and faster. It acts as a trip manager where you can link entire bookings, including accommodation , car rentals and attractions. The mobile app does most of the necessary sorting for you and gives you a clear overview of your trip with flight information, hotel addresses, car rental reservation numbers, and more. The app is easy to set up. TripCase is a free travel app for iPhone and Android.

In Canada where cellular service is infrequent outside of towns, this free travel app becomes useful. Maps.me lets you download detailed, offline maps to your device and offers you turn-by-turn navigation for driving, hiking, or biking to a selected location. Maps.me is definitely one of my favourite travel apps. I use it when I’m on the road or when I’m at home.

Travel Apps and Travel Gear

6. Grid Diary

This app provides an easy way to write your diary and keep track of your journey. I’ve been using Grid Diary in iOS for several years. It is well designed to keep a dairy in an organized way. Instead of writing a diary from scratch, you just need to answer some specific questions. Grid Diary combines weekly, monthly and yearly diaries, and it enables you to build your own journal and planner system. Gone are the times when travel notes were all over the place and it was such a chore to work through them after each trip.

The app also has a paid version which is totally worth it. Check it out for yourself.

Airbnb is known as a trusted community and is growing fast in Canada. With the Airbnb mobile app, it’s easy to discover unique places, meet the locals and save money on accommodation. Find a rental place just right for you, whether it’s a rustic cabin, a small cozy room in someone’s house, a yurt, or even a tree house.  The app gives you access to a large variety of vacation home rentals, new experiences, and places to visit all over Canada.

8. Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is an online community that connects travellers with locals for free lodging. The best part of the travel app is the new “Hangout” feature when you arrive in a new town. To use Hangout, simply turn on your availability. You can either start your own hangout by typing in what you want to do or browse the hangouts other travellers have already started in the area you’re at.

You don’t need to use Couchsurfing for finding accommodation while travelling instead you can use the Couchsurfing app to meet up with people and make new friends.

9. GasBuddy

Whether you’re road-tripping or live in Canada, this app is a must and is a money saver. GasBuddy locates gas stations near you and shows you prices, sends you price hike alerts and the app notifies you about deals. (Canada and USA only).

Travel Vancouver - app

10. Google Translate

If you’re travelling to Canada and you don’t speak English, Google Translate is a good app to have on your phone. Speak, snap or type anything and the app will instantly translate to English, French, or any other language you want. The app offers many additional features including instant camera translation and can be used offline as well.  It’s like having your interpreter along and it helps with any language barrier you come across.

11. Currency Converter Plus

Converter Plus is an easy-to-use unit converter, currency converter and calculator with the most extensive list of currencies and units in hundreds of categories. It also comes with many preset calculators like mortgage, loan, tip, fuel consumption and many others for everyday problems.

This is another app I’m using a lot. It lets you send money, receive payments from abroad, check exchange rates, pay bills or send money home. Wherever you are, you can do all with the Wise. Using Wise you save on transfer costs and you don’t get charged hidden fees. You can open a multi-currency account and get bank account details in nine currencies, or keep money in your account in 50+ currencies.

13. Whatsapp

Whatsapp messenger is one of the best apps to stay connected while travelling. It connects through WiFi so it’s free to use and you don’t have to worry about roaming charges. The app is a great texting platform for sharing information, photos and videos while you’re travelling and is widely used.  On top of that, the app lets you make long-distance phone calls for free, as well as video calls.

14. Instagram

Keep your family and friends up-to-date with travel pictures. Quickly shoot a picture with Instagram, choose one of the filters to make it special if you like, and then share it on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

15. Snapseed

When it comes to photo editing, Snapseed is the app you want. The free photo-editing app is available for Android or iOS. You can take photos in the app and edit them, or edit photos already in your camera, including photos in JPG and RAW formats. Try it out and learn how to use it. It is pretty easy to get started.

16. Prey Find my Phone Tracker GPS

This prey anti-theft app manages your digital accessories and lets you track and find your phone, laptop, or tablet even after they have been stolen or lost. It lets you retrieve photos remotely, wipe data, and prevent future loss by locking devices from across the street or across the world.

It was good to meet you on my way up through BC! I am excited to read on your travels! You really have inspired me on my journey too! Best wishes Jamie

Hello Jamie, I hope your trip to Alaska is going well. I’m happy to have met you as and thanks for the kind note and all. I wore the cool socks on my hike to Jaffrey Lakes near Pemberton a while back and was thinking of you. Please stay in touch, maybe I will see you in California!

Delphine du Toit

Hi Yrene, in your very helpful listing of useful apps for travelling you missed a critical one – probably because we developed it after you created the list. AutoWIKI is a location aware (GPS-based) audio (Text to speech) mobile app that works anywhere there is Internet and data access. We’re also working on developing offline packages for the areas where there is no coverage. It’s a Canadian product, co-creators live on the east and west coasts, so our data base is quite heavily populated with stories about places, people, events and things in the Maritimes and in Vancouver. In addition to our own database we draw on several other publicly accessible sites e.g. Wikipedia and several others, including First Nations land acknowledgements. We’ve tested it in 53 countries (English, French and Japanese), and on a road trip from BC to Nova Scotia. Please visit our website and contact me for more information. AND please download it and try out AutoWIKI – it is designed for road trips but is great in downtown areas for walking or cycling, – there’s lots of data and things to see and do

Thanks for the information. I did notice that your app is still a BETA version but I will download it and check it out.

Mapping Megan

There’s no denying that smartphones and their handy apps have revolutionized travel. Whether it’s booking flights and hotels, navigating new cities and finding parking, or gaining insight on local attractions, phone apps make many aspects of travel much easier.

To get you ready for your future Canadian holiday, I thought I’d introduce you to some of Canada’s top most useful travel apps.

While you may already have Airbnb, Uber, and Google Translate to help with French speaking regions like Quebec, you may not be aware that there are other incredible apps which are in many cases specifically designed for travelers visiting Canada.

Whether you need a campsite in Banff, want to check the winter ski forecasts, or looking for a Canada mobile casino due to the fact 65% of Canada’s top casinos including Casino Niagara and Casino de Montréal are still closed thanks to COVID, here are ten incredible Canadian travel apps you should download before your trip.

Top 10 Most Useful Canada Travel Apps

Nearly all travelers to Canada are now being urged to download the ArriveCan mobile app to be able to provide the mandatory travel information on and after their entry into Canada as a way to prevent the spread of COVID.

Though in  new Canada travel measures : the COVID-19 test rule does not apply to vaccinated arrivals from 1 April 2022.

While you won’t be denied flight boarding or entry for failing to submit the required information through ArriveCAN , you will be forced to face additional delays at the border for public health questioning and may be subject to enforcement action, so it pays to just download the app and upload the necessary information.

There is potential hefty fines and even possible prison time for travelers who violate health and travel safety instructions or fail to provide accurate information.

The ArriveCAN app allows you to upload your Canadian travel and contact information , your quarantine plan (air travellers are currently required to book a 3-night stay at a government-authorized hotel and are given a trip reference code they are to input in ArriveCAN), and complete daily COVID-19 symptom self-assessments until the completion of your quarantine period or until you report symptoms.

After inputting the required information, a receipt will be emailed to you or you can take a screenshot of your confirmation which you will then need to show to a Canadian border services officer upon entry.

The Canadian government is likely to continue using this app in some form even after border restriction ease, although exact required information may change.

Air Canada + Aeroplan

If you’re going to download one airline app for Canada, it’s likely to be this one since Air Canada in undoubtedly the nation’s largest and most popular airline.

Part of Star Alliance, Air Canada serves more than 200 destinations worldwide which includes all major Canadian cities and is widely regarded as one of North America’s finest airlines.

The Air Canada + Aeroplan app allows you to book flights, access your boarding passes offline, and get notifications when there’s a gate change and when it’s time to board. You can also view the in-flight menu and stream movies, shows, and music via Air Canada’s Rouge Player.

You can also check your Air Canada Aeroplan frequent flyer loyalty program account to see your points balance and use your points to book car rentals or hotels.

The airline’s app is also the first Canadian airline app to offer very helpful turn-by-turn navigation to popular Canadian airports such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Parks Canada – National App

A large number of visitors to Canada come to enjoy the country’s vast wilderness. Canada offers up nearly 50 national parks and national park reserves, where a wide range of wildlife can be found including bears, wolves, and moose.

The Parks Canada app allows you to view the various national parks and historic sites to find ones you may wish to visit. You can plan your itinerary and download hiking trail maps.

You’ll find a list of things to do in each park, basic camping tips with advice for what you should pack , and links to the various websites where you can make camping reservations within the parks.

The app goes beyond the major national parks to bring you the country’s hidden natural gems. With at least one national park in each of Canada’s provinces and territories, you’re bound to find a park near your chosen travel destination.

Canada Topo Maps

Canada Topo Maps comes in both a free and paid app version, and complements the Parks Canada app nicely. Whether you’re planning to hike, mountain, bike, or kayak, having topographic maps comes in handy.

You are able to download maps for offline viewing for when you know you won’t have cell data, and the route tracking uses GPS signals from satellites.

The free version of this outdoor navigation app allows you to create waypoints, GoTo-waypoint-navigation, and create and share routes and waypoints via Facebook, with map layers such as Google Maps available.

The pro version allows you to use point-to point navigation where you can track your speed, elevation gain, and distance travelled.

WikiCamps Canada

This is the only paid app in our list but it’s both cheap and a simple one time purchase. WikiCamps Canada offers up the nation’s largest database of campsites whether you’re looking for basic camping or a state of the art RV park.

Many of the app’s features work offline and new campsites are constantly being added. Currently, there are already over 9,000 different campsites where you can view photos and read recent reviews.

You can fine tune your campsite search results to reveal locations that are powered/non-powered, allow dogs, offer showers, have toilets, provide dump stations, etc. The app even features a helpful 7-day weather forecast.

iOverlander

An alternative free version to WikiCamps Canada is iOverlander . This app isn’t specific to Canada but since many travellers choose to travel as overlanders across the vast stretches of Canadian wilderness, it is used widely by visitors here.

The app is a very useful tool for campers much like WikiCamps Canada, with its maps offering up helpful locations not often found on campsite locators such as laundromats, auto mechanics, propane filling stations, potable water locations, restaurants, and even nearby tourist attractions.

New updated sites and information is constantly being added, as you yourself can add new places in order to share knowledge with other overlanders and campers. It’s an app that’s truly built by a community of outdoor and camping lovers.

iSki Canada

Canada offers up some of the world’s finest winter skiing and the iSki Canada app is a must whether you’re heading to Canada’s top ski resorts such as Whistler or Lake Louise.

The app offers comprehensive information on most of Canada’s top ski resorts where you can view the latest ski resort updates.

Look up snow reports and forecasts , view ski trail maps, and watch various ski resorts’ live web cams. A GPS tracker also allows you to record your ski runs, measuring your speed, time, distance, etc. Share your skills on the slopes with your friends and compete against other skiers within the app for prizes.

PayByPhone Parking

Both Canadian residents and visitors love the PayByPhone Parking app as it allows you to search for parking no matter if you’re looking for street parking, secure gated parking, or parking garages.

Better yet is the fact you no longer need to search for spare change for a parking meter or even use your credit card at parking pay stations. You can simply use your phone to pay for your parking.

You can search maps for where you can pay for parking using the PayByPhone app and don’t even need to create an account. There are countless locations around Canada where you can use PayByPhone including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Quebec , Winnipeg, and more.

Not only can you pay for parking with the app, you can also receive notifications of when your parking is due to expire and can extend your parking session remotely from your phone with the app.

Nearly 100 million people have downloaded the GasBuddy app which helps residents of the U.S. and Canada find the cheapest fuel around so you don’t waste any precious dollars of your travel budget.

The app looks at over 150,000 gas stations in North America to let you see where you can fill up for the least amount. You can narrow gas station results to show specific brands such as Shell, Exxon, Marathon, or Sunoco. You can also seek out stations that offer restrooms, car wash facilities, or onsite restaurants.

The app also allows business travellers the ability to log their fuelling stops for tax purposes or getting reimbursed by their company. It also offers tips on how you can become a more fuel-efficient driver and you can enter daily drawing to win free gas vouchers.

My Aurora Forecast

Winter visitors to Canada can not only enjoy skiing and ice skating, they may be able to also witness one of Earth’s most fascinating celestial displays. And the My Aurora Forecast app is the best for helping you witness the northern lights.

The mesmerising colourful display that the northern lights or aurora borealis puts on is a truly memorable experience and can be achieved in Canada with a bit of luck between October and March each year.

You can get forecasts of when the display is expected to occur, with helpful KP index updates which measure the geomagnetic activity over a 3-hour period to give you insight on the likelihood of you seeing the display. The KP index ranges from 0-9, with 5 and above offering the best chances of seeing the lights.

The app will show you the best current locations in your area for viewing the lights based on cloud cover and activity. It will also send you notifications when high aurora activity is expected in your chosen area whether that be Whitehorse in the Yukon or Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

How much does it cost to build Travel apps?

The cost of building a travel app can vary significantly based on several factors, including the complexity of the app’s features, the geographical location of the development team, and the time frame for development. For a basic travel app with essential features like booking, search functionality, and user reviews, the cost can range from $15,000 to $50,000. More complex apps featuring advanced technologies such as AI-based recommendations, virtual reality tours, or custom integrations with third-party services could escalate the cost to anywhere between $50,000 and $200,000 or more. It’s crucial to consider that these are rough estimates, and obtaining a detailed quote based on specific app requirements and functionalities is advisable.

  • Basic Travel Apps : Start at $15,000 to $50,000. Includes essential features such as booking, search functionality, and user reviews.
  • Mid-Level Complexity Apps : Range from $50,000 to $100,000. May include features like real-time notifications, social media integration, and simple AI functionalities.

It’s essential to have a realistic timeline for the app development and consider the team’s workload and availability.
  • Additional Costs : It’s also crucial to consider additional costs such as maintenance fees, updates, and ongoing support after the initial development phase. These costs can add up over time, so it’s essential to budget for them in the early stages of app development.
  • Choosing the Right Development Team : When it comes to building a travel app, choosing the right development team is crucial. It’s advisable to research and compare different companies or freelance developers before making a decision.

How to use the ArriveCAN app if you don't have a smartphone

All international travellers arriving to Canada via land or air are currently required to enter their information and upload documents to the federal government's ArriveCAN app within 72 hours prior to their arrival.

But the federal government says using the ArriveCAN app is mandatory and suggests that people use a public computer or ask a friend if they don't have a compatible device.

Travellers must use ArriveCAN to describe their quarantine plans, unless they're quarantine-exempt, and also to upload their COVID-19 test results. After July 5, when the quarantine requirements lift for fully vaccinated travellers, the ArriveCAN app will also be where travellers upload their proof of vaccination.

  • Newsletter sign-up: Get The COVID-19 Brief sent to your inbox

The app is available on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. The ArriveCAN iPhone app is compatible with any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 12.0 or later. On Android, the app requires Android version 6.0 or newer.

If you don't have a compatible smartphone, you can submit your information through the browser version of ArriveCAN on any computer. This can include a public computer at a library, an internet café or a hotel.

These places will also often have a printer, allowing you to print out your ArriveCAN receipt. Upon arrival, a Canadian Border Services officer will ask to see your ArriveCAN receipt. If you're not carrying a smartphone or other device, be sure to have a printout of our ArriveCAN receipt ready.

Alternatively, the government also suggests asking a friend or a family member who does have a compatible device to fill out the information for you and email you the receipt. You'll still have to find a printer to print the receipt if you choose this option.

The ArriveCAN app also facilitates daily check-ins for travellers during their quarantine period. If you don't have access to the app during your quarantine, you need to call 1-833-641-0343 each day to check in with federal officials.

The federal government calls ArriveCAN a mandatory requirement for all travellers entering by land or air, but it's unclear what sort of penalties would apply for travellers who don’t.

The federal government's website says that travellers who refuse to use ArriveCAN won't be denied entry, but may face delays due to additional questioning and potentially "be subject to enforcement action."

However, officials from the Public Health Agency of Canada, speaking on background, said that travellers dealing with "exceptional circumstances" outside of their control that prevents them from using the app or asking a friend or family member, won't be penalized for presenting paper copies of their documents.

Marine travellers are still allowed to produce their documents in paper format, given that internet access at sea may be limited, but they are still "strongly encouraged" to use the app, according to the federal government's website. Travellers immediately catching a connecting flight out of Canada are also exempt from using the app.

The ArriveCAN app is about to become optional. Will anyone use it?

The app cost the government just over $17 million to launch and develop.

travel app for canada

Social Sharing

While some travellers say they'll be glad when they no longer have to use the ArriveCAN app when entering Canada, others say there might still be some use for the tool.

A senior government source told CBC News earlier this week that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has signed off on a decision to end pandemic border measures and to make the use of the ArriveCAN app optional rather than mandatory. An official announcement is expected Monday, according to the source.

  • PM agrees to lift pandemic border measures, source says
  • Poilievre's rise leading to talk of easing border restrictions, Tory MPs say

The official spoke to CBC on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

With the government set to make the app optional, here's a breakdown of what ArriveCAN was built to do, why it's so contentious and what possible uses it might have in the future.

What was the app's original purpose?

The government launched ArriveCAN in April 2020 with the stated purpose of using it as a communication and screening tool to ensure travellers arriving in Canada complied with pandemic border measures.

Travellers would upload their contact information, travel information and a quarantine plan. The app wouldn't be made mandatory until November 2020.

  • The end of random border testing can't come soon enough for many travellers
  • Meet the librarian in rural Vermont helping stranded travellers with the ArriveCAN app

A new version of ArriveCAN launched in July 2021, when Canada began easing public health restrictions on people coming into Canada. Fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents crossing the border were no longer required to quarantine upon their return — but they were required to upload their vaccination documentation in the app.

Those unable to use the application on their phones would have to use the website version. When travellers finished inputting their information, they were emailed receipts to show to Canadian border officers upon arrival.

The app also would tell travellers if they had been tapped for mandatory arrival testing  or would be required to quarantine.

How much did it cost?

In response to a House of Commons order paper question, the government said it has spent over $17 million on the ArriveCAN app.

Just over $12 million of that amount was spent to develop the app, while a little under $5 million was spent to maintain and update it.

Why was it contentious?

As travel started to reach pre-pandemic levels this summer, the ArriveCAN app began to face some heavy scrutiny.

In June, some mayors and businesses in communities along the Canada-U.S. border began calling on the federal government to end the ArriveCAN app , saying it was discouraging Americans from visiting and shopping in Canada.

Later in July, the government said a glitch in the app incorrectly told travellers to quarantine when they didn't have to. That error affected about 10,200 people.

A man wearing a suit stands behind a podium.

Kristine D'Arbelles, a spokesperson for the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), a non-profit travel agency, said she has heard from a number of travellers who have complained about using the app.

"Someone might not be comfortable with technology. Some find it a little bit hard to use," she said, adding that one client's phone died just as they were approaching customs.

The Conservatives have been using the app to needle the Liberals over travel issues in recent months. Pierre Poilievre promised to scrap the app entirely during his victory speech when he was elected leader of the Conservative Party.

Earlier this week, Conservative MPs argued Poilievre's growing popularity pushed the Liberals to begin reconsidering their border measures, including ArriveCAN.

Will people still use it?

In June, the government announced an additional feature of the app that would allow passengers to fill out a Canada Border Services Agency declaration form ahead of their arrival at customs.

Filling out the form in advance could shave 40 seconds off each interaction at a customs booth, said a news release from Transport Canada.

That won't make a difference for Tom Appleton from Oakville, Ont., who said he won't be using it again once it's made optional.

"I don't understand the benefits ... There are other ways of doing it." Appleton said, adding that he'd rather use his Nexus pass.

  • This story was made possible thanks to a udience members, like you, who got in touch with us. Send us your questions about the ArriveCAN app and travel. We are listening: [email protected] .

David Roughley from B.C. said he found the app fairly straightforward — but he won't use it once it's optional because he wants to reduce his digital footprint.

"I'm sure the government would do everything it can to protect the data [the app collects]," he said. "But ... I think it's up to each one of us to personally take responsibility for information."

John Schneider from Cambridge, Ont. said he would happily use the app as a pre-screening tool, adding he's had no problems with using it in the past.

"The arrive app is a smooth procedure and really and truly, based on our experience, it should be used more because it was very efficient," he said.

D'Arbelles said the app can be useful but should remain optional, allowing those who are comfortable with using it to do so if they choose.

"For those people who are comfortable and ... have found a way to use it, then maybe they can be in a separate [customs] line," she said.

Corrections

  • This story has been updated from an earlier version that erroneously stated the government announced the addition of a CBSA declaration form in the ArriveCAN app in August. In fact, the addition was in June. Sep 24, 2022 1:56 PM ET

3 travel apps you need before your next flight to keep you out of long TSA lines

travel app for canada

Travel can be stressful, especially when airports are involved.

Flights get delayed, or, worse still, canceled.

Ever-growing security lines sometimes snake through the airport, putting you in jeopardy of missing your flight.

Last-minute changes can happen and derail months of planning, potentially starting off your trip on a bad note.

Programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry can help travelers, but there are also ways that tech can help you prepare for your journey and stay aware of the curveballs that might come your way.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Here are three apps to download before your next trip.

Watch the video above to learn which three apps you need before your next trip.

Airline app

Download your airline’s app!

It keeps all of your travel information in one, easy-to-access place.

Turn on notifications to get immediate alerts when it's time to check in so you'll know if there are any delays or gate changes.

Once you have a boarding pass, save even more time by adding it to the digital wallet on your smartphone.

The lines at airport security can be very unpredictable. Sometimes there is no wait, other times, the line extends into the check-in area.

The Transportation Security Agency’s (TSA) app, MyTSA, tries to make the wait a little more predictable and helps you determine what to expect, especially if you’re traveling from one of the busiest airports in the US.

The app provides a real-time look at your selected airport's wait time, any FAA delays, and which TSA PreCheck lanes are open.

The app also uses historical data to help you plan ahead. So, even if your flight is three days away, the app can show you what you’re likely to encounter that day based on previous experiences.

It’s also a useful resource if you’re unsure about what you can or can’t pack in your carry-on and checked luggage.

Mobile Passport Control

If you’re traveling abroad, the Mobile Passport Control app makes your return through U.S. customs much faster.

The app is a digital version of the Customs and Border Patrol Declaration Form that anyone entering the U.S. is required to fill out.

You can save up to 12 profiles in the app, and only one form is needed per family, per residence.

The app doesn't work at every airport, so check  the CBP website to see where you can use it.

How long does it take to get a Canadian passport in Metro Vancouver?

Elana Shepert

canada-passport-how-long-to-get-2024-vancouver

Travellers looking to renew their Canadian passport or get their first shouldn't face long waits and will get one with the new design.

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) told V.I.A. that most travel documents are processed within the standard service times in Metro Vancouver and generally don't experience waits.

People can also use a simplified renewal process by submitting their old passports.

Before submitting passport applications, Service Canada recommends that you ensure the application is correctly filled out and includes any necessary supporting documents.

When should I think about getting my passport?

Service Canada recommends getting a passport before planning a trip in case of difficulties.

Don't wait until your passport expires to get a new one. Many countries require that your passport be valid for six months before you leave or for an extended and specific period after you arrive in some countries.

How long does it take to get a passport in Canada?

Applications at a passport office or a Service Canada Centre should be processed within 10 business days.

Applications at regular Service Canada Centres, at regular mobile service sites, and by mail should be processed within 20 days.

Service Canada notes that it has increased demand on a seasonal basis as popular travel times approach, meaning people may experience delays.

Service Canada also has a website that allows you to check  wait times before visiting a passport office.

What percentage of applications are processed in the standard time frames?

According to Service Canada, 92 per cent of applications, regardless of how they were applied, are processed within the standard service times.

"Certain types of cases, such as incorrectly completed forms or complex cases for other reasons, make up a significant portion of applications that take longer than the normal processing time," said the ESDC.

Will I get a passport with Canada's new design on it?

The new Canadian passport has enhanced security features that help prevent fraud and confirm the document's validity. It also celebrates the country's heritage and identity with new artwork, showcasing its natural beauty through the four seasons.

The new cover design features the outline of a maple leaf, which is the first "significant change" to the passport in decades, according to the government.

ESDC said all Canadians applying for a new passport will receive the latest design with updated security features. However, the old passports are still considered secure and reliable; they will not need to apply for a new one.

Do you need a passport to fly within Canada?

You do not require a passport to fly within Canada but need one for cross-border flights to the U.S.

How can the mobile passport control app help with flights to the U.S.?

Canadians heading across the border can have a new option to submit their information digitally before flights.

Locals who plan to travel to the U.S. from Canada can submit their passport and customs declaration information through a free, secure app on their smartphone before they leave for a trip.

The U.S. Customer Customs Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app allows travellers to experience "shorter wait times, less congestion, and efficient processing," when crossing the border.

Is the 10-year passport surge affecting wait times?

The first 10-year passports were issued in 2013 and started to become eligible for renewal in July 2023.

For 2024-2025, based on IRCC forecasts, Service Canada expects to receive between 4.89 million and 5.40 million passport applications. While approximately 50 per cent of these applications are expected to be renewals, it does not expect delays.

What about if you need to get your passport quickly?

If you plan to travel soon and need a Canadian passport issued immediately, you can apply for urgent or express service.

The urgent service will get your travel document to you by the end of the next business day, while the express option typically takes two to nine business days.

The urgent service costs an additional  $110 more than a regular passport  and the express option costs an extra $50.

You must visit a passport office in person to take advantage of the urgent option and you may be required to show proof of travel.

Can I use the simplified process to renew an expired Canadian passport?

Canadians can use a simplified process to renew their expired passport if it was issued within the last 15 years of the date they apply. The simplified version is also available to individuals who lost their passports or lost or damaged them.

Renewing a Canadian passport is easier than applying for a new one. If you are renewing one, you will not require a guarantor (a person who can confirm your identity), proof of citizenship, or supporting identification.

To renew your passport,  fill out the questions online  with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to see what steps you need to take next. The system will tell you to:

  • give you all the forms you need
  • tell you how to submit your application
  • show the costs for different passport services

No monetization features

TikTok is testing Notes in Canada and Australia the two countries they refuse to offer content creators any compensation or monetization like creator fund or TikTok shop. TikTok treats Canadians and Australian like lab rats, they harvest our viral content for the platform and have us test their app for them but under no circumstances will monetize us. Once we were done testing and they release features like TikTok shop they release it to everybody else except Canadians and Australian. Meanwhile, Canadian and Australian content creators will watch the screenshots of 10,000 a month deposits from US creators. We will watch in disbelief as TikTok invest infinite resources into going to bat for content creators in week of a potential band. But they'll invest no time or no dime into Canadian and US content creators. This is really revealing as to how they view content craters in these countries. If the CCP truly doesn't have any influence in TikTok, why is it that these are the same two countries that have ongoing high tensions with China right now? This is not a coincidence and the CCP has directives to TikTok and it is glaringly obvious. The audacity to have these two markets to test this new app when after five years, they have never provided any monetization in terms of a creator fund or TikTok shop to these incredible content creators. Canadian and Australian content craters are nothing more than lab rats, or cattle to be harvested for our content and our data and our user testing. But we hold no value to TikTok outside of that. This is why Canadian content creators have been increasingly moving to Meta/Facebook, and YouTube, because these platforms actually provide a path forward as a content creator.
