How To Make A Travel Vision Board

Travel Vision Board Ideas with a collage of photos, words and quotes.

A vision board uses the idea of the law of attraction, and the belief that what you focus on, you attract into your life.

Just remember “A dream without action is just a wish.” Without taking action, your vision won’t come to life magically. I like to think of this as the first step to making my dream vacation happen.

I love that this activity allows me to tap into my creativity, and keeps me inspired & motivated every day to work towards my goals. Plus there are great benefits:

  • Keeps you focused on your goals
  • Gets you excited about your plans
  • Provides clarity around what is really important to you and your family
  • Gives you a starting point to take action on your dreams
  • It’s creative & fun

1. Gather Inspiration & Choose Your Focus

Decide what you want the focus of your vision board to be. It can be used for a single dream vacation, highlighting tours, attractions, foods, and experiences.

Alternatively, you can use a bigger one to plan for one or more years, detailing multiple trips.

I like to start with a destination I have in mind and look at travel blogs, magazines and social media for ideas and inspiration.

Write down all your ideas. There are no rules. They can be anything from a specific feeling, or mood, to activities like drinks served on the beach, to luxury accommodations with a kids club. Anything goes!

EXAMPLE : When planning my family beach vacation to Cuba I started with ideas like these:

  • Playing in warm ocean waves with my daughter
  • Sunset walks on the beach
  • Mix of relaxing & fun active adventures
  • Walk the Malacon
  • Havana, Varadero
  • Practice & learn more Spanish
  • Eat at local paladars
  • Old car tour

Multiple vacation photos & quotes overtop.

2. Decide The Format For Your Travel Vision Board

Two rows of photos hanging by string and clothes pins

There are 3 main ways I like to make my vision boards; physical, digital and Pinterest boards.

There’s no wrong answer. You may even come up with another cool idea, like a slide show, video, sculpture, the sky’s the limit.

  • Physical Vision Board : Uses a piece of poster board or paper, and cut out pieces of paper, words and quotes to glue onto it. You could also use a cork bord & pin pictures to it.
  • Digital Vision Board: Uses your computer, or a program like Canva (what I use) to create a digital collage with pictures, words or quotes.
  • Pinterest Board: Make a specific Pinterest board for your trip. Search for ideas, and save them to your board. You can make folders or just throw them all in.

When I’m feeling creative, a physical board is so satisfying. But Canva is super easy as they have plenty of digtal templates already you can use to just put your photos into.

The only downside to a digital copy is you’ll need to keep in on your phone / computer which may not be as regularly visible. Or you’ll need to find a way to print it out.

3. Gather Your Materials

Once you have your where and the format for your board, you’ll need to gather all your materials.

  • Source your photos, quotes and words . You can find these in magazines, postcards, brochures or online with free photography sites like Unsplash, Pixabay, PicMonkey, or my favourite Canva. Google “travel quotes” or “family travel quotes” to get ideas for those. Check out our fave 150+ road trip quotes here .
  • Grab physical materials & tools . For a physical board you’ll need poster board or paper, your pictures, quotes, scissors, glue or tape etc, depending on how you’re planning to make your board.
  • Create a Pinterest Board . Name your board whatever you’re calling your trip (ex. Africa 2024, Summer Vacation, Rockies Road Trip etc.

4. Arrange Your Vision Board Content

4 Steps to making a Travel Vision Board graphic

Now comes the fun part where you dial up your creativity and arrange your content.

Invite some friends or family members to take part, and make a little party out of it. I’ve done this with friends on New Years to start the year off right. But you can do it anytime.

Some tips that have helped me to make trip collages more pleasing include:

  • First start with a focal photo . Sometimes I use a picture of my family, sometimes it’s specific place, animal, quote or activity that is driving my travel desires. Arrange everything around it.
  • Next choose your color scheme . Coolors is a great free tool to help you choose an overall, cohesive look. You can even upload one of your travel vision board photos and pick out colors from there to use.
  • Mix up the size & positions of photos & words
  • Mix up mediums . With a physical collage, use different types of paper (magazines, newspaper), paint, pencil crayons, cut out words or individual letters, different fonts, hand drawn pictures or stickers. Thrift stores or Dollar stores are great places to get cheap magazines, stickers, poster boards & other materials.

5. Display Your Board Where You’ll See It Everyday

many photographs on a wall, with woman's hand writing on blank sticky note.

Once you have your masterpiece, hang it somewhere you can see it everyday, to remind you of your focus for the year.

While this is easier when it’s a physical thing, you can always save it as your screensaver or background on your cell phone or computer.

6. Take Action

Without taking small actions every day or week to reach your travel goals, you may find yourself disappointed at the end of the year.

Maybe it’s learning how to save more money for travel & choosing one or two things to do.

Maybe it’s making a travel budget or finding ways to travel more affordably so the trip is more doable for you or your family.

Whatever your actions are, make sure they align with your travel & life goals.

Hey life happens. But do you want life to just happen to you, or do you want an amazing year accomplishing your travel goals?

My partner & I like to sit down every couple of weeks or so and review our budgets, goals, and actions to see if we are headed in the right direction. That way it’s easier to adjust if we get off course.

Final Thoughts: Travel Vision Board

Your beautiful travel vision board is your ticket to turning dreams into adventures.

Whether it’s a single destination or years of travel plans , this creative tool keeps your wanderlust alive.

With some inspiration, creativity, and a dash of motivation, I know you’ll be well on your way to making your dream vacations a reality. Start envisioning your journey today and let your travel dreams take flight!

Travel Vision Board: How to Organize Your Bucket List

Collage of printed Iceland travel photos, with text overlay - "how to make a travel vision board".

Is your bucket list overflowing with dream destinations? A travel vision board is the perfect way to organize your ideas and help make them a reality.

Collage of printed Iceland travel photos pinned to travel vision board.

My very first travel dream board was a haphazard collage of magazine cutouts and blurry printer photos. Not bad for a tween in the 2000s, but not exactly wanderlust-inspiring quality either.

Thankfully, modern technology has made it easy to create a beautiful travel vision board quickly and cheaply–no glue sticks required. Whether you want a physical collection or a digital collage, here are the steps to design your own vacation vision board.

Create a list of dream destinations and experiences

You probably have tons of trip ideas and images swirling around in your head. To sort through the jumble and create the perfect travel vision board, start by listing out your bucket list destinations and experiences.

There are no rules for this list. It can contain everything from broad locations to specific elements, like a luxury hotel room with a big bathtub. At this point, your only task is to get your thoughts down on paper (or computer screen).

It’s also helpful to write down the overall mood of the trip. For example, is it romantic? Relaxed? Adventurous? Include a few notes that set the scene, like “quiet sunsets on the beach”.

Here’s a list snippet from the travel board I made when planning a trip to Japan :

  • Snow monkeys
  • Hotel room with private onsen and nature views
  • Zenko-ji temple at sunrise
  • Relaxed evenings in bed

If you prefer digital lists, you can snag a free copy of my travel organizer by subscribing to my newsletter below!

Source photos for your travel vision board

Once you have a list of the key parts of your trip, it’s time to source the visuals that go with them!

There are tons of free online resources for travel photography. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Stocksnap.io

You can download printer-quality versions of photos from these sites, or save them on your computer for digital travel boards. As long as you’re keeping your board private (i.e. only for your personal use), you don’t need to worry about attribution.

Aside from stock photos, here are some other places to scout for travel images:

  • Magazines ( CN Traveller , National Geographic , etc.)

Find a few inspiration quotes

A travel vision board full of photos is fine, but adding extra elements turns the design up a notch.

Some people think travel quotes are cliche, but as an English major, I love a thoughtful passage. A quick Google search will turn up all sorts of inspiration, but these living abroad quotes and short travel quotes are good places to start.

You might also want to include some quotes about the specific destination you’re visiting. Doing a search of “books set in (destination)” or “books about (destination)” will give you the titles, which you can then search on Goodreads to find people’s favorite quotes.

Compile your favorites and set them aside until you decide if you’re going physical or digital with your board.

Choose between digital and physical travel vision board ideas

There are a few different ways you can form your vacation vision board. Each has their pros and cons, and there are no “best” answers: the choice is yours.

We’ll dive into the specifics of how to create your board in the next step. For now, here are the tools you’ll need, as well as some physical and digital travel vision board ideas.

Physical travel boards

A physical travel board opens the door to endless possibilities. Will you go for the classic cork board collage? Or perhaps something more quirky, like a hanging mobile?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Display your images and quotes on a cork board with clear push pins
  • Tape or glue your content and write/paint quotes onto poster board or canvas board
  • Hang everything from a photo mobile or photo strip
  • Form a border of images and quotes around a scratch-off map

Using a physical travel board gives you the option to display your board as art. You’ll also have more creative flexibility to use different mediums (ex. magazine clippings, vintage paper, etc.). The only downsides are that you’ll need to buy materials and print out photos.

Digital travel boards

If you’re looking for a fast and free way to make a travel vision board, digital is the way to go. All you need is a platform or software to organize everything into one image.

Here are some free options that have built-in collage templates:

  • Canva (my top recommendation–they also have tons of free photos!)
  • Google Slides

If you don’t care much for design and just want a space to organize your ideas, Pinterest is a great option. You can upload images or save them from the web, and even link them to travel resources to reference in the future.

Making a beautiful digital travel board is easy with the help of online templates. You also don’t have to worry about printing photos. However, your display options are limited–you’ll either need to view the board on your phone or computer when you want some inspiration, or figure out how to print a copy to display at home.

Arrange your content

Travel vision board layout with pastel beach photos and quote - "you don't have to be rich to travel well".

It’s time to flex those creative muscles! You don’t need to be an artist to pull together a beautiful travel board. Just follow a few basic rules to keep it cohesive and eye-pleasing:

  • Identify one image to be the focal point, and arrange everything to complement it
  • Choose a general color scheme–sites like Coolors can even generate a palette based on a photo you upload
  • Mix up the sizes and orientations of your images
  • Use a blend of close-up shots and zoomed out scenes

Here are a few more ways to add creative flair to your board:

  • Write your quotes on colorful or vintage-looking paper (or use a textured digital background to achieve the same effect)
  • Make a “days until departure” section (sticky notes work well for this)
  • Add magazine or newspaper clippings (or screenshots) from articles you read about the destination

Display your travel board in a strategic location

You’ve worked hard putting together your travel vision board, so why not display it in a prominent place? This is easier with a physical board, but there are ways to ensure digital versions get plenty of your attention.

I display my travel board in the living room, which is where I spend the most time (yes, I work from the dining table instead of a proper desk). It’s a nice source of comfort and inspiration when I’m feeling tired or overwhelmed. Plus, keeping it front-and-center helps curb impulse buying and delivery spending–I can’t afford to travel if I order takeaway three times a week!

For digital boards, I recommend making them your desktop background or phone wallpaper. If you have dynamic wallpaper, you could even split the board into multiple sections and have them rotate across your screen. You can also create a shortcut to the image location and put the icon on your home screen or desktop.

Guided travel vision board session (1 hour!)

Every year I host a travel vision board party on Instagram live at @packslight for my 150,000+ followers.

Below is the replay! It's about one hour long and is the guided travel vision board session.

Step 1: Reflect on Your Travel Goals

Before diving into the creation of your vision board, take a moment to reflect on your travel goals from the past year. Did you accomplish them all? Why or why not? Was it budget, confidence, planning? What will you do differently to make sure they happen in the coming year?

And of course, what do you want to manifest? First decide:

Are there experiences or activities you want to have in the coming year? They could be…

  • Activities (steal ideas from my bucket list !)

Maybe you're yearning in general for a tropical beach getaway, a bustling city escape, or a serene retreat in the mountains.

This is more of the general vibe or energy you want to have next year if you don't have particulars in mind yet!

Step 2: Gather Your Inspiration

Now comes the fun part – gathering inspiration!

Look for images that represent your travel dreams. These can be photos from magazines, online travel blogs, or social media platforms:

Don't limit yourself to just pictures of destinations; include anything that captures the essence of your desired travel experiences, such as local foods, activities, cultural symbols, or even quotes that resonate with your travel spirit.

Step 3: Use my Free Canva Template!

This is where my Canva template comes into play!

I made it to fit perfectly as your phone's background and lock screen, making your vision board not only beautiful but also constantly accessible. Download the template and start customizing it with your collected images and inspirations. Canva is user-friendly, so you can easily drag and drop your images, resize them, and arrange them aesthetically on the template.

A travel vision board is the best way to visualize your travel goals! Here's how to make yours for the new year:

Step 4: Add Personal Touches

Your vision board should be a reflection of your unique travel aspirations. Add personal touches to the template by incorporating your favorite colors, decorative elements, or inspirational quotes.

You can add specific goals or a checklist of destinations to visit in 2024.

These personal touches will make your vision board more meaningful and motivating!

Step 5: Download and Set as Your Phone Background

Once you're happy with your creation, download the vision board from Canva. Then, set it as your phone's background and lock screen.

This way, every time you check your phone, you'll be reminded of your travel goals, keeping them top of mind as you plan and prepare for your adventures.

Step 6: Take Action

While a vision board is a fantastic tool for inspiration, the real magic happens when you start taking steps towards your travel goals.

Begin researching your desired destinations, start saving money, look into travel deals, and perhaps learn a bit of the local language. Every small action brings you closer to turning your travel dreams into reality.

It's more than just a collection of pretty images; it's a roadmap to your dream destinations and experiences. It serves as a daily reminder of your aspirations and motivates you to turn those dreams into reality.

By using the Canva template I've provided, you can easily create a personalized, inspiring, and visually appealing travel vision board for 2024.

So, start dreaming, get creative, and let your vision board guide you to incredible adventures in the coming year!

Don't update your vision board unless 1) Your goals change, or 2) You accomplish your goals and want to add more of them!

Canva – I have an entirely FREE cellphone lock screen template you can borrow to make yours too!

The Concept Behind a Travel Vision Board

Creating a travel vision board is a powerful way to manifest your travel destinations and turn your dreams into reality.

But what exactly is a vision board?

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board is a visual representation of your desires, goals, and aspirations. It is a collection of images, pictures, postcards, quotes, and affirmations that reflect the experiences and destinations you want to manifest in your life.

By compiling these elements on a physical or digital board, you create a visual reminder of your travel goals and set the intention to attract them into your reality.

Think of your vision board as a visual roadmap that helps you stay focused on what you want to achieve. It serves as a daily reminder of the experiences you desire and keeps you motivated to take inspired action toward making them a reality.

Manifesting Your Travel Destinations

Manifestation is the process of bringing your desires into reality using the power of intention, visualization, and positive energy.

By creating a travel vision board, you are tapping into the law of attraction and harnessing the power of your subconscious mind to attract your desired travel destinations.

When you regularly look at your travel vision board, you are visualizing and connecting with your dreams on a deeper level.

This act of visualization activates the reticular activating system (RAS) in your brain, which then becomes more attuned to opportunities and resources that align with your travel goals.

As a result, you start to notice synchronicities, receive inspiration, and take inspired action that moves you closer to your desired destinations.

Whether you dream of exploring pristine b eaches, immersing yourself in vibrant cultures , or embarking on thrilling adventures , a travel vision board can help you attract these experiences into your life.

🌎 Still deciding where to go next year? These are the destinations we recommend adding to your travel wish list !

It serves as a visual manifestation tool that aligns your thoughts, emotions, and actions with your travel goals, creating a powerful energetic vibration that attracts the opportunities and resources needed to make your dreams come true.

Benefits of Having a Travel Vision Board

Now that you understand the concept behind a travel vision board, let’s explore the benefits of having one.

Keeps Focus on Travel Goals

One of the key benefits of having a travel vision board is that it helps you stay focused on your travel goals.

By creating a visual representation of your desired destinations and experiences, you are constantly reminded of what you’re working towards. Seeing your travel goals regularly can provide motivation and keep your enthusiasm alive.

🔮 Imagine waking up every day and seeing the beautiful beach you’ve always wanted to visit or the picturesque mountain range you dream of exploring.

These visual reminders on your travel vision board can serve as powerful motivators to help you stay on track and make progress toward your dreams.

Inspiring Action towards Your Travel Dreams

A travel vision board not only keeps you focused but also inspires you to take action toward making your travel dreams a reality. When you see your goals visually represented, you’re more likely to be inspired to take practical steps to achieve them.

It’s not just wishful thinking; it’s about turning those dreams into tangible experiences.

Whether it’s saving money for your dream trip, researching the best travel resources, or learning a new language , a travel vision board serves as a constant reminder to take action and make progress.

It ignites a sense of urgency and empowers you to turn your dreams into action plans.

So, if you’ve always wanted to explore new cultures , adventure in exotic destinations , or simply take a break from your daily routine, creating a travel vision board is a powerful tool to turn those dreams into reality.

Gathering Inspirational Material for Your Travel Vision Board

Creating a travel vision board is an exciting process that allows you to visually manifest your travel dreams. To make your travel vision board truly inspiring, you’ll need a variety of inspirational materials.

Here are some tips and ideas for gathering the perfect materials for your travel vision board:

  • Travel Magazines: Flip through travel magazines and cut out pictures of your dream destinations, hotels, and activities. These images will transport you to the places you aspire to visit.
  • Websites: Explore travel websites and blogs to find stunning photographs and detailed descriptions of different travel destinations. Save these images to your computer for easy access when creating your vision board.
  • Social Media Platforms: Follow travel creators and tourism boards on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest . Their posts can serve as great sources of inspiration and provide you with beautiful images to include in your vision board.
  • Personal Photos: Look through your travel photo collection and select pictures that evoke cherished memories or represent your future travel goals. These personal photos will add a personal touch to your vision board.

Don’t limit yourself to just photos. Explore other sources of inspiration as well.

Quotes and phrases about travel can also be powerful additions to your travel vision board. Collect quotes from books, movies, or famous travelers that resonate with your travel dreams and aspirations. They will serve as reminders of why you’re creating your vision board.

Remember, your travel vision board is a reflection of your unique vision and desires.

Be creative and think outside the box when gathering materials.

Let your imagination run wild to develop a vision board that truly represents your travel dreams.

Choosing the Best Format for Your Travel Vision Board

When it comes to creating a travel vision board, there are two main formats to consider: digital and physical. Each format has its advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to choose the one that best suits your preferences and needs.

Digital vs. Physical Travel Vision Boards

A digital travel vision board is created and accessed online, using platforms or software that allow you to compile images and inspirational material in a digital format.

On the other hand, a physical travel vision board involves gathering physical materials such as magazines, postcards, and printed photos to create a tangible board.

Pros and Cons of Different Vision Board Formats

Each format has its own set of pros and cons.

  • Digital Travel Vision Board :
  • Convenience: A digital travel vision board allows you to access and update your board from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Accessibility: You can easily share your digital vision board with others through email, social media, or other online platforms.
  • Customization: Digital platforms often offer various tools and features to customize your board, including the ability to add music, videos, and interactive elements.
  • Screen Time: Creating a digital vision board may require spending more time in front of a screen, which may not be ideal for some individuals.
  • Dependence on Technology: As with any digital format, there is a risk of technological issues or data loss.

Physical Travel Vision Board :

  • Tactile Experience: Creating a physical vision board provides a hands-on, tactile experience that some individuals find more engaging and personalized.
  • No Technology Dependency: With a physical vision board, you don’t have to worry about technical issues or potential data loss.
  • Creative Freedom: You have the freedom to experiment with different materials, textures, and layouts to create a unique vision board.
  • Space Requirements: Physical vision boards take up physical space, which might be a limitation for those with limited space or who travel frequently.
  • Less Portability: Unlike a digital vision board, a physical board may be less portable, making it less convenient to take with you on your travels.
  • Difficult to Update: Making changes or updates to a physical vision board may require more effort and resources compared to a digital board.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preference, lifestyle, and how you envision using and experiencing your travel vision board.

Creative Vision Board Ideas for Adults

Create a travel vision board that speaks to your inner wanderlust and inspires you to pursue your travel dreams.

Here are some creative ideas to help you design a personalized vision board tailored for adults:

  • Use a world map as the background: Choose a large world map as the base for your vision board. Pin or glue pictures of your dream destinations onto their respective locations on the map. This visual representation will ignite your travel desires and make your goals more tangible.
  • Incorporate travel-related symbols and artifacts: Include travel-related symbols such as airplanes, suitcases, globes, or compasses on your vision board. You can use stickers, printed images, or even small objects to represent these symbols. These elements will elevate the travel theme of your board and make it visually appealing.
  • Add a personal touch with handwritten notes or sketche s: Write down your travel goals, aspirations, and affirmations directly on the vision board. Use colored markers or pens to make your words stand out. You can also sketch your dream destinations or create hand-drawn illustrations to make your board more unique and personal.

Remember, a travel vision board is a reflection of your travel dreams and aspirations. Get creative and customize your board to make it truly yours.

Let your vision board be a constant reminder of the adventures waiting for you and the steps you need to take to make them a reality.

Selecting Inspiring Travel Quotes

Travel quotes have a way of capturing the essence of wanderlust and igniting your adventurous spirit.

Here are some tips for selecting inspiring travel quotes to include on your vision board:

  • Choose quotes that resonate with your travel goals and aspirations.
  • Look for quotes that evoke a sense of excitement, curiosity, or a desire for exploration.
  • Consider quotes from renowned travelers, authors, or philosophers who have shared their wisdom about the transformative power of travel.
  • Opt for quotes that inspire you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences.

Remember, the quotes you choose should evoke a positive emotional response and serve as a constant reminder of your travel dreams.

How Positive Affirmations Can Influence Your Travel Goals

By incorporating positive affirmations into your vision board, you can overcome limiting beliefs and manifest the travel experiences you desire.

Here’s how you can leverage positive affirmations to influence your travel goals:

  • Create affirmations that reflect your travel aspirations in the present tense, as if they have already been achieved.
  • Use affirmations that resonate with your desired travel experiences, such as “I am exploring breathtaking landscapes” or “I am immersing myself in vibrant cultures.”
  • Repeat your affirmations regularly and visualize yourself experiencing your travel goals with excitement and gratitude.
  • Affirmations can also help you overcome any fears or doubts that may be holding you back from pursuing your travel dreams.

Let these powerful words inspire and motivate you on your journey to making your travel goals a reality.

An affirmation card.

How to Create a Travel Vision Board

Whenever I hear the term “vision board,” I imagine my 8th grade self sitting on my bedroom floor cutting out magazine photographs and inspiring articles.

Later, I’d hang the cutouts on my walls with sticky putty because my mom was convinced the tape would rip the paint off the walls.

Before Vision Boards Were a Thing

One time, I strung a series of Nike advertisements into a banner. It was one of the first girls are powerful in sports messages I remember seeing in a magazine. I remember feeling inspired and hopeful every time I looked at it.

Yes, wayyyyy back in the 90s before vision boards were a thing, I spent a lot of time flipping through Seventeen and Cosmopolitan for dreamy inspiration.

Social Media and The Rise of Vision Boards

Thanks to social media, especially Pinterest, vision boards are definitely a thing. Sure, call them a trend, if you wish. I think with our visually obsessed culture, vision boards aren’t going away anytime soon.

What’s a Vision Board

A vision board is a board or display that features images, quotes, inspiring messages, or whatever you choose, to inspire. For some, a vision board is a way to set goals. And for others, it is a way to keep eyes on a target or manifest something specific or a dream, like becoming a midlife blogger and influencer .

Still, for others, a vision board is a tool that helps breathe life into a vision that one has for her life. A vision board can offer clarity or focus, or serve as a visible reminder of set goals or plans. Ultimately, a vision board is a visualization tool.

A Travel Vision Board

A travel vision board is only one type of vision board. A travel vision board might display of places on your travel bucket list that you’d like to visit. It might feature places that inspire you. Or display photos or quotes of places that remind you of happy times or experiences, the feelings of which you’d like to re-create or manifest in your present life.

A travel vision board might feature images of things you’d like to do in your travels. For example, a photograph or magazine clipping of the Louvre in Paris might help you stay laser focused on your dream of visiting Paris.

Additionally, a travel vision board displayed in a prominent place in your home or office might remind you to save money, spend less, get your work done more efficiently, or find a new job, so you can make your travel dreams come true. In other words, a travel vision board could keep you sticking close to your travel dreams, so they become realities.

The Purpose of a Travel Vision Board

  • Clarify, realize, or outwardly express your travel dreams or travel goals
  • Define your travel bucket list or personal travel goals
  • Remind you of your goals (especially when it is placed in a prominent location for you to see each day)
  • Motivate you to stay focused on your goals
  • Help you with travel planning and saving money for travel
  • Remind you why you are saving money or spending less — that is, to give reality to your travel visions
  • Help you better understand yourself, your goals, personal interests, wants and needs
  • May help you manifest your travel dreams or a travel lifestyle
  • Remind you to take time for yourself–for your dreams
  • To express yourself creativity
  • For fun and hope–the future is bright!

The Law of Attraction

One motivating idea behind vision boards is the law of attraction . In brief, as in very brief , the law of attraction is the philosophical idea that positive thoughts and positive messages bring positive results.

Of course, the idea is that the inverse is true, too: that negativity attracts negativity.

Ever read that book The Secret ? Yep, I read it, too. That’s what I’m talking about here.

Vision Board Manifestation

So, when it comes to the vision board concept, the idea is that if you put your positive thoughts, ideas, goals, and dreams out there–as in front in center in your own life–you can attract or manifest positive outcomes. Even desired, specific goals or dreams.

How Do You Create a Vision Board?

A vision board doesn’t need to be complicated or costly. Actually, you can probably make a personal vision board for free or nearly free, just by finding things around your house and on the Internet.

You can make a vision board using a big piece of poster board. You can also get fancier and buy a cork board or my favorite, a cork board – white board combo .

Vision Boards Don’t Need to Be Physical Boards

Don’t think vision boards have to be all scissors, glue, and paper though! You can also create a digital vision board. Yep, there are vision board apps and websites that can help you create your personalized vision board.

Pinterest as a Virtual Vision Board

You can also use Pinterest to create vision boards. If you haven’t yet used Pinterest, you should start. Believe it or not, Pinterest is one of the fastest growing search engines. Pinterest is free. So grab yourself an account .

And…here’s the kicker…you get to create or save “pins” or “pin pins” to your own boards. Please check out and follow my Wanderschool Pinterest Board here and while you’re there feel free to repin any of my pins that speak to you onto your own boards. 😉

You can also check out my specific board Vision Board Inspiration for ideas to help you create your own beautiful, life changing and goal clarifying vision board.

How to Create a Travel Vision Board?

You can create a travel vision board by collecting images or photos that inspire you or your dreams. Also, you can find travel pictures for vision boards online, such as at Unsplash .

You can also make your own collages or photo overlays using the free or pro version of Canva. I’m a HUGE fan of Canva.

Ideas for Your Travel Vision Board Manifestation

If you’re wondering what you might want to include on your travel vision board, the first place to start is to think about your travel goals or dreams. What message do you hear your heart telling you about travel? And what is the script that plays over and over again in your mind? What do you hear about your travel dreams in the quiet moments?

If you don’t have a clue what your vision looks like, that’s totally okay! Starting a vision board is the perfect way to breathe life into a general idea (or feeling that there’s something you want or need in your life) and watch it take shape and evolve.

Your board might include these travel vision board parts:

  • Photos of your favorite places
  • Images of places you’d like to visit
  • Travel pictures for vision board
  • Things you’d like to do – generally or in those places
  • Inspirational quotes or positive messages
  • Cutouts from magazines, newspapers, journals, advertisements, etc. that remind you of your travel goals
  • Canva creations or collages
  • Any visual trinkets, souvenirs that inspire (e.g., ticket stub, airline ticket stub, postcards, napkin, business card, or matchbook from a favorite restaurant in your travels, etc.)

There’s No Right or Wrong Way to Create a Vision Board

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to create a travel vision board. Let your dreams, inner dialogue, goals, creativity, and imagination guide you. Your vision board is yours .

How To Create a Travel Vision Board To Inspire You

Most people like to set goals for themselves or update their bucket lists. I am very enthusiastic about both – to dream dreams is always a fun activity! Many people make use of a vision board to remind them regularly of their goals or bucket list items. If you have travel goals, such as visiting far-off places and doing adventurous activities, why not create a travel vision board? A travel vision board is a great tool you can use to keep your travel dreams alive!

This post contains affiliate links. We may earn compensation when you click on the links at no additional cost to you.

What is a travel vision board?

A vision board is a concept that has become well known after the book, The Secret , came out a few years ago. It was not a new idea, but this book made it a buzzword. The Secret refers to the law of attraction, which states that you attract whatever you focus on.

A vision board is usually a poster board with pictures of what you want to do or achieve. It helps you visualise your dreams or goals by creating a visual reminder of these items. Some people do a vision board for a particular period, such as a year, while others do one for their longer-term wishlist items. For me, when my vision board focuses on a shorter period, such as one year, it becomes almost like a goal board, while the lifetime board is akin to a bucket list board.

A vision board for travelling is a great visualisation tool of your dream destinations, adventure activities, or things you would like to do or experience. The power of a vision board lies in reminding you constantly of your travel goals.

How to create a travel vision board

The purpose of a vision board for travelling

If you have never considered making a travel vision board, there are several reasons to create one:

  • It helps you to remain focused and motivated when doing travel planning.
  • Putting the vision board in a place that you see daily will always remind you of the places you want to visit. This can be a huge motivation when you need to save for a trip or take other actions to make the trips happen!
  • When creating your board, choose the places and attractions you want to visit. This helps you clarify which destinations and attractions are a priority for you.
  • Creating a vision board for travel is also a lot of fun! It requires you to dream of places to see and things to do, which requires creativity and is fun!

What is the focus of a travel vision board?

You can use a travel vision board in so many ways. You can use it for your dream vacation focusing on a single destination. In this case, you can include the attractions you want to see, foods you want to try and experiences you want to have in this travel destination. Creating a single destination vision board may increase your excitement for a future trip, but it also helps you to do proper planning for the trip by identifying what you will do while there.

Alternatively, you can create a travel vision board for your future travels. You can decide on planning for a one-year horizon or a five-year horizon. In this case, think of all the trips you may want to complete during your chosen period and add details to your vision board.

What should be on a vision board for travelling?

Your travel vision board should reflect your travel dreams and desires, also known as your travel bucket list. It should reflect your personality – you can be as creative as you like! You can include pictures of destinations you want to visit, attractions you want to see, or inspirational travel quotes! Anything goes. You need to create a board that will inspire you and keep you motivated, and you know best what type of content will achieve this.

A travel dream board is a perfect way to help you with goal setting for your travel plans. It is a great idea to have specific goals by including city names, images of people and travel images from your dream travel destinations. If you have always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower, you can include an Eiffel Tower picture on your travel vision board. Perhaps you have dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights in person, be sure to add it to your vision board!

Format of your vision board

There are many ways to create a vision board for travel. Here are some options:

  • You can create a physical travel board for travel by cutting out pictures of places you would like to visit from travel magazines or newspapers. You can also print photos from blogs and social media platforms, such as Instagram and Pinterest. Add travel quotes and interesting messages from magazine clippings to inspire you. Pin these to a corkboard or paste them on large cardboard which you can put on a wall.
  • Another great option is creating a digital vision board for your travel goals. You have many options to choose from for digital versions of a travel vision board, including using a vision board app or a digital collage you can use as your phone or laptop’s wallpaper.
  • Many people create a Pinterest board for their travel vision board. I also have one! I do not think it serves the purpose of such a vision board and a physical or digital travel vision board since you have to go to Pinterest to click on the board to view it. Seeing your board quickly and often makes Pinterest a better option for creating your bucket list, which you can update once in a while.

How to create a travel vision board

What do you need to create your own vision board for travel?

What you need depends on the type of vision board you are creating

  • To create your own travel vision board in a physical form, you need craft supplies, such as poster board, glue sticks, magazine clippings and a pair of scissors! You may also choose to create or buy a push pin travel map to show your past and future travels using different colours of pins.
  • For a digital vision board, you can use a variety of images, including high-quality stock photos showing inspirational images or even your own travel photos from previous trips. There are many useful apps to help you, including Canva , Picmonkey , Visme or VistaCreate to create your digital vacation vision board.
  • You can use multiple vision board apps to create one or more online vision boards, including

Regardless of whether you make a physical or digital vision board, make sure it has a positive outlook with positive things, positive thoughts, and inspirational quotes.

How to use your travel vision board

If you don’t see your vision board often and easily, it will not serve its purpose. To fully utilise your travel vision board, whether it is a digital board or a physical vision board, you need to see it every single day!.

If you created a physical board, hang it in your bedroom or study area where you can see it when you get up in the morning or when you look up from working at your desk. Another great place to hang your travel vision board is in your living room, where most people spend a significant amount of their daily lives.

Some people create their vision boards for travel on a page in their planners or diaries. That way, they can see it daily when they use their planners or diaries.

The nice thing about a digital travel vision board is that you can take it with you! Save it as your wallpaper on your laptop , desktop, tablet and phone. Make sure it is visible in as many places as possible to ensure the best success possible. The pleasant thing about the digital version is that you can even use it as wallpaper on your work computer – no one will even know what you are staring at when you are looking at your computer screen!

You can put your travel vision board anywhere – the important thing is to keep it in a prominent place!

Fun ways to create a vision board

Creating a vision board is so much fun, why do it alone? You can have a great time if you involve a family member or friends by having a travel vision board party. You can have this at the beginning of a new year and let everyone create a new year vision board, but you can have this fun activity any time of the year to allow everyone to create a vision board for their bucket list destinations or dream vacations.

32 thoughts on “How To Create a Travel Vision Board To Inspire You”

This is a great idea. Too often we bounce between ideas for various travel destinations. Sometimes we forget that we wanted to visit a certain locale, and make plans for a less desired destination. This would help keep us on track.

Well, they say if you know what you want it is so much easier to get to!

Definitely a great idea! I always just sort of have vague ideas of where I want to go and have trouble planning but this would be a great thing for me to put together.

We love this great idea. Physical vision boards are still awesome, but going digital is easy now.

One can easily have both! I do!

I think it helps one focus and make certain destination more of a priority than others!

Travel vision is an awesome idea. It keep track of all the destinations.

You are right! It keeps one focused!

Not a bad idea. They say that it’s easy to achieve something if you already have it in your mind. It probably helps looking at it often, in order to stay organized and focused. Thanks for a tip!

It sure does! A constant reminder basically!

Interesting idea. I have not done this about my travels, but I did a management course once where did something similar about our life goals. It was so much fun but at the same time cleared my visions of the future. I´m sure same works with travelling plans.

Anything that helps one clarify what you want must be effective!

What an interesting concept! I must admit I could never get the idea of vision boards. And with travel especially I’m more of anI-want-to-see-everywhere-and-everywhere-is-interesting kind of person. But I appreciate getting a glimpse of this philosophy. 🙂

Happy continued travels! C

We used to make vision boards all the time for different subjects in school, I don’t know why I haven’t thought of making one for travel yet! I think we’re so used to technology these days that with the likes of Pinterest vision boards aren’t seen as necessary. But after reading this I think I might crack out the scissors and glue and get creative.

Ah, now I definitely need to create a visition board to remain inspired for long term travel soon! Thanks for introducing me to this concept.

Great idea and great tutorial for canva! I didn’t read The Secret so at first I didn’t even know what a Travel Vision board was… but I really think it can be fun to make one. Then again, do you really need a travel Vision board? I still want to see so many places that I don’t have a wishlist, I decide spontaneously where my next travel itinerary will be, and sometimes it’s a country or a city I didn’t even think of in the first place. What do you think?

Carola, I also want to see everything and go everywhere! But what I like about the vision board is prioritising destinations that I want to see first!

Rhiannon, for me the benefit is having it as wallpaper or screensaver – this reminds me constantly of my travel priorities.

My pleasure! Hope you have fun making yours!

Ariane, I think for those of us working full-time, we need to prioritize our travels more due to limited vacation and travel time. But even if you travel full-time, you must have some idea of where you want to go first for any given year?

Thanks for the inspiring article.

All I can do is add the miracle question: “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?”

Love that quote! I think we let fear influence our lives too much!

Great article. I’m a great follower in vision boards and what you can achieve when one is focused. A simple tool and clear vision of your goals! if you want to know more about vision board you can visit: https://www.amazer.me/vision-board/

How My Travel Vision Board Works In 4 Easy Steps

Travel vision board is one of the most powerful mind exercises that can help you to reach your travel goals.

Just in case you like to plan ahead like me, you’ll learn how to create your dream board to keep you inspired and focused on your dream destinations you wish to visit one day.

Vision boards are a constant reminder of what is important to you and what you hope to accomplish traveling the world.

In this post you’ll learn:

  • What is a travel vision board
  • How does it work
  • 4 steps how to make a travel vision board that works
  • How to get my vision board template

If you’re looking for an in-depth travel dream to reality (143 proven & tested) , I HIGHLY recommend this travel dream to reality ebook.

What is a Travel Vision Board

A travel vision board is a collection of all the places that you’d dream to visit. Your vision board is a perfect way to organize the places, city names, airport names, food to try, adventures, and anything that is inspirational to your travel list.

It sounds simple but there is POWER in visualizing your travel dreams especially when you back them up with proper planning.

The vision board was a random collage of magazine cutouts, stickers, inspirational quotes (nothing fancy really).  Whether you want a physical collection or a digital collage it’s up to you. There are no rules for this.

The World is yours…Make it happen!

Below is an example of my own personal travel vision board.  On the left side, I simply get some photos online of  my travel dreams to travel in business class  and one of the places that I want to visit one day.   The colorful village called  Cinque Terre in Italy came into manifestation in 2019.

My travel dreams didn’t happen overnight but they transpire in a series of days, months, years, and actions of working towards it that I layout on my travel vision board.

How Does It Work?

I am sure that you have tons of places to visit, ideas of things to do, local dishes to try, and images spinning around your head.

Yes, a travel vision board works!

Vision board works to help you organize through the tangled thoughts, goals, and create a smooth process and the outcome you want. I’ve always been a strong believer in the power of visualization and goal settings  in organizing my entire life whether when it comes to my traveling dreams, career, and money matters.

Create your vision board that contains everything from broad to vivid details, like traveling in business class with a glass of champagne or caviar.

And know exactly the places that you dream to visit someday, the local dishes you wish to try,  and the adventures you want to do either as a solo traveler or with your loved ones.

I love my vision board because it gives me a daily visual reminder to work hard towards my goals. Even when it comes to my dream house, I constantly update my vision board.

Underneath is my dream house that I created on my vision board in June 2018. Despite of the uncertainties caused by  the COVID-19 pandemic where millions of people lost their job,  I am so blessed to manifest my dream house this year (2021).

how to create a vision board

Vision boards don’t work alone but   instead, y ou need to take  proper planning  and steps towards making that goal to fruition.

Creating a travel vision board relates to your life direction and mindset. T he more I do them, the more I believe in them, and the more I got so obsessed with them – a sort of dream manifestation  for me.

4 Steps How To Make a Travel Vision Board That Works

This initial step is my big brain dump that includes all my travel goals.  Sit down with paper and pen and think about your dream destinations for the coming year.  So in this initial step, set your own goal that is SMART.

SMART goals stand for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.  See if these goals can be realistically achieved with your resources like time, money, and other factors.

If you want to learn about how to set smart goals, check my article about the  ultimate goal setting guide with my own personal examples.

I am sure you will gonna love this step.  Look out for images, words, elements for your vision board. G o through online to look for images or look at a stack of magazines you have. Put everything you like that relates to the travel vision board you are making.

Then, you will need something to build your travel vision board on.  Begin with your vision board base. You can use the back of your room door, fridge, whiteboard, or simply use electronics like your computer screen or smartphone as your board base.

3. Construct

Allocate a time to construct your ideal travel vision board.  There are really no rules when it comes to the best time to do it. The most important is you should be feeling good, motivated, and energized in doing your vision board.

Now, it’s time to add all those images, your own words, stickers, or other elements over your vision board.

Once your collage is complete, have it frame it or put it somewhere where you will see it regularly!

Make sure that you set your intention, review your progress, and do proper execution on how to attain your goals.

Your travel vision board is your best tool to get clarity about those dream destinations and adventures you want to do. And make it easy for you to move in the right direction because w hen you want to make your travel dream a reality you have to create a clear vision of what it should look like.

Travel Vision Board Ideas: Making Your Travel Dreams Come True

Are you looking for travel vision board ideas to help you transform your dreams into reality? Sometimes, trip planning is relatively easy and there is no need for extra motivation to make it happen. But often there are major obstacles between us and our hopes for travel.

As an experienced travel coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges people face in reaching their travel goals. Whether it is finding money and time for a family vacation, gaining the skills and knowledge needed for a first time solo trip, or making the transition to becoming a digital nomad or expat– life can easily get in the way of reaching our goals and prevent us from attaining them.

I’ve also seen the power of visualization and goal setting in helping individuals achieve their travel dreams. One technique that many prefer is the creation of a travel vision board. This method aligns your goals with images and words, helping to make those dream destinations and travel lifestyle choices a reality.

In this guide, we’ll delve into travel vision boarding and explore some of the research on its effectiveness. Then we will offer practical steps to create your own board using different mediums. We will also look at alternative methods for visualizing travel dreams. And throughout the article, we will talk about ways to use these techniques to keep your travel aspirations front and center.

Table of Contents

The Science Behind Travel Vision Boards

Vision boards work on the principle of visualization, a technique supported by research in the field of psychology and neuroscience. Visualization activates the same neural networks that actual task performance does, enhancing motivation, confidence, and performance. Translating this to travel vision boarding, by picturing our travel goals, we stimulate the same cognitive processes, making our aspirations more tangible and achievable.

There are additional studies that show vision boards help in the area of “value tagging.” Our brains are constantly evaluating the barrage of external stimulation and deciding what is important and deserves more attention. Creating a travel vision board and referencing it frequently can help your brain prioritize your travel goals.

Interestingly, there are studies that show visualization of reaching our goals, without visualizing the steps needed to get there, can actually hinder achieving them. So an essential step is creating a viable plan for reaching our travel dreams. Vision boards are only an early step in the process. Consider adding images of the intermediary steps to your vision board. For example, my husband and I are working towards living aboard a sailboat and traveling the world. So one of my personal visuals is picturing myself comfortably docking the boat in a slip– one of my fears that I am committed to working on repeatedly this summer!

Finally, it is important to remember that there are many things outside of our control and it is very harmful to assume that imperfect visualization skills cause poor health, social and economic inequality, and many other challenges that interfere with our travel goals. Travel goal visualization is simply a tool that can help us reach our dreams. But it can be a very helpful and enjoyable one, so let’s get started!

How to Make a Vision Board

The best way to make a vision board is to allow yourself to be visually inspired as you imagine your future. Humans are highly visual creatures and the old saying that a picture speaks a thousand words is true. Have fun with this creative process!

Your board will be more helpful if you eventually have specific goals, such as “I will take my first solo trip to The Netherlands in the spring of 2025,”  instead of, “I will travel more.” But you might not know your specific goals at the beginning–  and that is completely fine! Be open to the process and know that it is changeable. Your vision board is a living document and will evolve over time. Also know that your vision board is yours, you can share it with others only if you choose to– so be brave and put your dreams out there.

Vision Board Travel– Journal Prompts Before You Start

Before diving into the vision board, it’s helpful to reflect on your deeper hopes and intentions about your travel experiences. Here are some journal prompts to get you started:

1. What are the top places you want to see or return to? Describe what draws you to these places.

2. What do I want to gain from my travels (e.g., adventure, connection, learning, relaxation, cultural immersion)?

3. How do I want to feel during and after my travels?

4. What are my top three travel goals for the next year? Five years?

5. What steps will I need to take to reach those goals?

These prompts aim to clarify your travel intentions, serving as a foundation for your vision board. Spend time journaling, in self-reflection, and/or in conversation with trusted family or friends as you explore them. Consider working with a travel coach who will provide much deeper opportunities for self-reflection about your travel goals and support you in crafting a plan to reach them.

How To Create An Inspiring Travel Vision Board

Majestic mountains, sun-bleached beaches, and vibrant cultures are places many have been yearning to visit over the years. Creating a travel vision board is ideal for fueling that wanderlust while optimistically planning future travels.

A new year vision board is a great way to plan for upcoming vacations and attain your travel dreams. Involve each family member to enhance the excitement about forthcoming vacations, bucket list destinations, and travel dreams. This article will walk you through how to make an inspiring  Travel Vision Board  to help you attain your travel goals.

What Is A Travel Vision Board

A travel vision board highlights your travel dreams and travel goals. The biggest goal of a vision travel board is to inspire you. The board should inspire you to create changes in your life to help you reach your goals. Whether it is to encourage saving more money by cracking down on a budget, pursuing a new hobby, or insisting that you use those PTO days.

The vision board should uplift you with motivational quotes and help provide a positive boost. It should constantly reinforce that determination to reach those dreams.

Travel Vision Board example

A travel vision board can be utilized in many ways. The first is that it can be constructed for a single vacation by highlighting attractions, experiences, and places you wish to visit. Not only is it helpful in vacation planning, but it ignites a spark of excitement for the upcoming trip each time you see it.

Travel vision boards can be places you wish to visit within a year or five years. There is no right or wrong way to create a vision board; you have to pick one that is right for you! While some people like to shoot for stars with their travel dreams, I want to keep things a little more down to earth with attainable destinations.

Nothing says you can’t have more than one travel vision board, either. I often create one for each trip we go on, in addition to having a bucket list board.

While you may feel like your travel vision boards look like the one below, don’t let the year slip by without creating one to spark your sense of adventure.

Why Put Together A Vision Travel Board

There are many purposes for creating a travel vision board. While it may seem pointless or not worth the effort, it is quite the motivator. Don’t underestimate the power of a vision board.

Take into consideration the law of attraction. The law of attraction suggests that positive thoughts bring positive results into a person’s life, while negative thoughts bring adverse outcomes. Therefore, having a positive outlook on travel makes it more likely to have positive results.

By putting together a travel bucket list, you prioritize destinations that are a must to visit. This way, if an opportunity arises to take a trip of a lifetime, you have a starting point of where you want to go.

Vision boards for travel come in handy for travel planning. Here is a perfect example; while planning a vacation, it was too early to make reservations for a particular attraction. A few months passed, and glancing at my travel vision board reminded me to make those reservations. It gave me a quick adrenaline boost knowing that my vacation was inching closer and closer.

Another purpose is to provoke mindfulness in spending habits. Saving for a dream vacation often takes months or even years to accomplish. Your board will act as a visualization tool that will constantly remind you of your goals.

Vision Board Supplies

Crafting the ideal vision board can be simple or more entailed depending on the type of board you want. While some may rush off to the craft store, others search online vision boards to find digital versions and templates.

The supplies you need for your vision board will depend on the type of vision board your wish to create. While some will opt for the corkboard with their travel photos push pinned in, others may opt for a more scrapbook look by creating a posterboard vision board with craft supplies.

Create your own board

Vision Board Supplies List

  • Poster Board
  • Glue sticks or tape
  • Travel magazines or printed pictures for your board
  • A pair of scissors
  • Motivational quotes
  • Construction paper

Digital Vision Board

For those not looking to get out the magazine clippings and glue, there are many great digital options to download. Many downloads make it easy to plug in your favorite visuals and quotes to create a stunning vision board in a matter of minutes.

The digital versions vision board templates in this post are from  CANVA .

How To Choose What To Put On Your Travel Vision Board

Before constructing your vision board, consider what specific goals you wish to accomplish. Is it a travel bucket list full of dream destinations or a goal board highlighting a dream vacation?

While a travel vision board can be a beautiful digital collage of travel images, the reality is it will never manifest to anything unless you have the right mindset. The biggest motivation has to come from within, telling yourself that you will travel, you will save, you will experience this. Then map out how you are going to make that happen.

For instance, if money is tight, maybe your board will consist of budget-friendly destinations with one or two bucket list experiences you will save up to do. Add in one or two powerful inspirational quotes throughout your vision board that will prompt you to save and plan.

Where To Gather Photos

The best part of creating your own vision board is finding the stunning images that inspire you. Choose photographs that are powerful images reflecting the type of travel your desire. If a retreat with friends is part of your travel plans, include group travel photos.

I often include a bigger picture that represents my top priority. For example, if your vacation vision board is a trip to the Northern Lights in Iceland, the most prominent photo should be a clear picture of the night sky with northern lights shining brightly. Then pair it with images of people doing other activities such as swimming in the Blue Lagoon, glacier hiking, or maybe a photo of a particular food you would like to sample.

Iceland Bucket list board

Adding real-world photos such as placing money in a piggy bank or vacation planning will help give a visual cue that these things need to happen first before reaching that vacation goal.

Inspirational images can be found on social media, travel websites, travel blogs, and travel magazines. For free high-quality stock photos and travel visuals, check out the following:

Gathering Travel Quotes

An important thing on every board is finding travel quotes that will be a source of inspiration. Quotes are a great tool to give you that brief kick in the pants needed to create change.

One of my all-time favorite quotes is, “The trouble is, you think you have time.” Buddha

This quote strikes a chord with me because I will often put off going big trips and opt for shorter weekend trips to keep my travel urges at bay. I constantly tell myself I will go there in a few years when my daughter is older or when I am in better shape. However, the reality is none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Why put off what you could be doing now in hopes of doing it tomorrow.

Here are a few of our favorite inspiring  Road Trip Quotes .

Where Should I Place My Travel Vision Board

For your vision board to fulfill its purpose, it needs to be where you will see it consistently. Depending on the type of board you created, there are various places to have your board.

If your board is digital, consider making it your computer screen or phone background. Digital versions can be printed and placed in planners, on the fridge, or practically anywhere.

mood board for travel

For a poster board or corkboard, a great place to hang it is in your home office or workspace. By the bed or nightstand is another popular spot, as you see it when you wake up in the morning and before bed.

Frame your vision board to place in your living room. By placing it in such a prominent place in my home, I often opt not to watch television and do vacation planning or research.

A unique place to put it is in the laundry room since you will be in there multiple times a week.

Plan A Vision Board Party

Uplift your friends and family with a goal-setting vision board party. These parties work best for those making a physical travel board. Sharing our goals with others is a perfect way to help them manifest, creating a sense of accountability.

Consider utilizing these vision board ideas to help you reach your next trip’s travel goals. They are a powerful tool to help you reach your personal goals. With proper planning, positive energy, and goal setting, the world is your oyster!

How To Make A Travel Vision Board

This week, my planner shows a quote from Genevieve Berhrend: “Visualising is the great secret of success.”

With the arrival of a new year comes new resolutions and dreams (aka visualisations).

Like many of you, Scott and I are looking ahead to a time when we can start dreaming of new adventures and destinations again.

Although we all still have to wait a little longer before jetting off to new places, there’s no reason why you can’t start dreaming and visualising now. For both this year and beyond.

That’s where a travel vision board comes in.

It’s a place where you can make a note of your wildest travel dreams (and your more realistic travel goals) and be reminded of all the adventures you want to have one day.

A place where you can build your very own travel bucket list – and make it happen.

Keep reading to find out how to create a travel vision board… and why they’re perfect for heralding a new year.

What is a travel vision board?

A vision board (sometimes also called a dream board) is a collection of images, pictures, affirmations and inspiring quotes to help you manifest and realise your dreams and desires.

And a travel vision board is just that – but obviously for your travel dreams, wishes and bucket list.

How To Create A Travel Vision Board

All kinds of people have endorsed vision boards including Oprah Winfrey. But they’ve gained huge popularity over the years particularly since the bestselling book “The Secret” was published.

This book explains the idea of manifestation or the law of attraction. Tell the universe what you want, and so the book says, the thing you want will come to you.

It’s not always easy and our negative thoughts have the power to change the path we’re on or manifest other things. Unwanted things.

But the idea is that the universe wants to move heaven and earth to give you what you want. And when you can visualise what you want, the universe becomes that much more powerful to help you realise your dreams.

“The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualising, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe,” explains Rhonda Byrne in The Secret.

The power of travel vision boards

All kinds of people visualise their dreams and ambitions.

Top-performing CEOs regularly talk to themselves in the mirror about their dreams and achievements.

Athletes frequently visualise themselves winning races and competitions.

So why shouldn’t you visualise all the places you want to travel to and all the things you want to do?

This is where a vision board comes in – or in this case – a travel vision board.

By spending time creating a vision board and displaying it in a prominent position within your home, you’ll find it easier to visualise your travel goals and desires.

Lots of people think vision boards hold a certain power while others think they result in people spending too long dreaming and not enough time actually going after what they want.

I think there’s truth on both sides.

While I’ve created plenty of travel vision boards over the years to help me focus and hone in on what I want and where I want to go, making one would have been pointless if I hadn’t also gone after those dreams and made them happen.

Maybe then you can think of your travel vision board as a “travel action board” instead?

Either way, if this sounds like something you want to create this year, keep reading for tips and ideas to help you manifest all your biggest travel dreams and wishes via a travel vision board.

What should you put on your travel vision board?

Your vision (or action!) board is yours. So what you put on it is completely up to you.

You also have the choice between making a physical board to hang up in your home or a digital vision board.

We’ll go through ideas and tutorials for each. But either way, you’ll need to collect things that help you to visualise what it is that you want, such as:

  • Magazine or brochure cut outs of dream destinations and activities. Use a combination of words and pictures.
  • Travel quotes and affirmations that inspire you.
  • Inspiring stock photos or free photos from online of places you want to visit or things you want to do. Pixabay, Unsplash and Burst by Shopify are all good websites to use.
  • Icons and symbols to show you what you want like planes, passports or suitcases.

Or maybe you’ve already been somewhere and want to visit again one day, so you have your own photos or even mementoes from a previous trip you can use?

How to create a travel vision board

How To Create A Travel Vision Board

If you want to make a physical travel vision board, then here’s how to do it. The section afterwards has advice for creating digital travel vision boards.

Travel vision board supplies

  • Large art canvas or piece of thick card
  • Your collection of images, quotes, cut outs, etc
  • Glue stick and scissors
  • Acrylic paint in different colours (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: plan your travel vision board..

Will you use it just for travel-related dreams and ambitions? Or will you create something that reflects different parts of your life alongside your travel goals?

When I made my first vision board a few years ago, I had two sections related to travel (for must-visit destinations and specific adventures I wanted to have one day like scuba diving). But I also included sections for health and fitness, relationships and careers.

The choice is yours, though, so go with what you’ll find most inspiring.

Step 2: Collect your sources of inspiration .

Whether you’re using magazine or brochure cut outs, images printed from online, travel quotes written down or printed out, start by gathering everything you want to find a home for on your vision board.

You might have more than you can fit. But that’s okay as you’re going to prioritise if they can’t all fit on the board.

If you want to paint your canvas or card then do so now. As I had different sections to my board, I used a few different colours of paint to separate it all out. But you don’t have to do this. You might find that your images and words stand out better if they’re on a white or cream background.

Step 3: Arrange your cut outs and glue them to your canvas or card.

Without glue for now, start arranging your cut outs. This is the artistic bit where you’ll want to display your pictures and affirmations in a way that makes sense to you.

But the most important thing is for everything to be clear and to stand out so nothing’s forgotten or missed when you look at your board.

Once you’re happy, glue everything down.

You’re now ready to hang your travel dream board where you’ll see it every day such as your kitchen, office, bedroom, hallway, or even on a wall you walk past on your way to the bathroom.

Have you considered getting some friends or family together (when it’s safe to do so) and creating vision boards together? Some people call it a vision board party, but this could also make a fun stay at home date idea for you and your other half.

How to create a digital travel vision board

How To Create A Digital Travel Vision Board

Of course, you don’t have to create a physical travel vision board for them to work.

Pinterest is like the social media of vision boards, so that’s always a good place to start.

Or you could even get artistic with a free tool like Canva , where you can create a collage of images to use as your laptop background or screensaver. They even have templates you can use.

Just as long as you still display your vision board in a prominent place where you’ll see it regularly, it’ll work just as well as a physical vision board.

FAQs about travel vision boards

Has your vision board worked.

Yes. And no.

The same year I created my vision board, I met Scott – and he’s everything I’d written down in the love and relationships section of my board: funny, loving, kind, thoughtful, honest, intelligent, romantic, loyal, adventurous, I could go on.

We’re also married now, which was another word I included on it.

And while I’ve also ticked off a lot of the goals and dreams I had back when I created my vision board, I was also in a very different time of my life.

I was interested in studying for a Masters in English so I could go on to teach. This was years before I knew I wanted to be a travel blogger.

I also don’t think I paid enough attention to the health and fitness section of my vision board. While I developed better habits, I chickened out of running a half-marathon (even though I’d signed up for one and had been training for it).

I think this is where action needs to happen, not just visualisation.

Although I do believe in vision boards and the law of attraction and manifestation, I do think we need to take an element of responsibility for our own destinies and actually go after our dreams.

After all, I certainly wouldn’t have travelled as much as I have had it not been for actually booking hotels and plane tickets.

Likewise, the half-marathon wasn’t going to happen if I didn’t turn up on the day.

Visualisation should breed action.

Should you keep your vision board private?

Only you know the answer to this. Do you feel uncomfortable sharing it? Then don’t.

Just as long as you’re looking at your board regularly and using it to visualise what you want then that’s what matters.

What is the best vision board app and how do I make a free vision board online?

My two go-to tools for digital vision boards are Canva and Pinterest because they’re free, easy to use, and you can design some colourful and powerful boards with them.

Final thoughts on travel vision boards

If you’re reading this, then the chances are pretty high that you’re interested in creating a travel vision board.

But if you’re new to the concept, the last thing I have to say is to believe .

That’s one of the most fundamental “rules” when it comes to visualisation and the law of attraction.

You have to truly believe you’ll achieve whatever it is you want. Otherwise, you won’t be able to visualise your dreams fully.

“In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” – Lewis Carroll

Travel Vision Board Ideas

A travel vision board is a great way to get inspired and organized for your next trip. It can help you collect ideas and images of places you want to visit, things you want to do, and styles you want to wear. Here are a few tips on how to make your own travel vision board:

1. Collect images and ideas from magazines, the internet, and your friends.

2. Sort the images and ideas into categories, such as “beach vacation,” “European city break,” or “backpacking in South America.”

3. Create a collage or poster of your vision board. You can use a poster board, an online template, or even your computer’s word processing program.

4. Hang your vision board in a place where you will see it every day. This will help you stay motivated to make your travel dreams a reality.

How do you make a travel vision board?

When it comes to planning a vacation, many people like to use a visual aid to help them get excited about their trip. One way to do this is by creating a travel vision board. This is a board where you can paste pictures or drawings of the places you hope to visit, as well as images that inspire you. Here’s how to make your own:

1. Choose a board. You can use a poster board, a cork board, or even a large piece of cardboard.

2. Collect images. Start by finding pictures of the places you hope to visit. You can find these online, in magazines, or even in travel brochures. If there’s a specific attraction you want to see, find a picture of that, too.

3. Add inspiration. Once you have your travel images, start adding in pictures or images that inspire you. This could be a beautiful sunset, a picture of your family or friends, or even a motivational quote.

4. Arrange your images. Once you have your images, start arranging them on your board. Try to create a layout that will inspire you and make you excited about your trip.

5. Hang your board. Once you’re happy with your layout, hang your board in a place where you’ll see it often. This will help keep you motivated to make your trip a reality.

What are some ideas for a vision board?

A vision board is a powerful visualization tool that you can use to help you manifest your goals and dreams. Here are some ideas for creating a vision board that will help you achieve your goals:

1. Choose a Location

Choose a location for your vision board that is conducive to creativity and inspiration. Some people prefer to create their vision boards in a specific spot in their home, while others like to take their boards on trips to get inspired by new surroundings.

2. Choose Your Materials

Choose materials that will inspire you and help you stay focused on your goals. Some people prefer to use poster boards or cork boards, while others like to use magazines, photos, or stickers to create their vision boards.

3. Choose Your Goals

Choosing specific goals to focus on is an important part of creating a successful vision board. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

4. Brainstorm

Take some time to brainstorm about what you want to achieve. Write down everything that comes to mind, no matter how big or small. Don’t be afraid to dream big!

5. Choose Images and Words that Represent Your Goals

Once you’ve brainstormed about your goals, start choosing images and words that represent them. Cut out or print images and words from magazines, the internet, or your own photos to create a board that is uniquely yours.

6. Put it All Together

Once you have your images and words sorted out, start arranging them on your board in a way that feels inspiring to you. Some people like to make collages, while others prefer to just have a few key images or words to focus on.

7. Hang it and Use it!

Once your vision board is complete, hang it in a place where you will see it every day. Use it as a daily reminder to stay focused on your goals and dreams.

What is a travel board?

A travel board is a piece of furniture that is typically used in a bedroom to store clothes and other items. It is often a large piece of furniture that takes up a lot of space, and it can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and plastic.

There are a few different types of travel boards available on the market. The most common type is a traditional travel board, which is a large piece of furniture that is shaped like a rectangle or a square. It has a flat surface on top that can be used to store clothes and other items, and it typically has several shelves and drawers that can be used to store additional items.

Another type of travel board is the hanging travel board. This type of board is designed to be hung on a wall, and it typically has a few shelves and hooks that can be used to store clothes and other items. It is a space-saving option that is perfect for small bedrooms.

Finally, there is the fold-away travel board. This type of board is designed to be folded away when it is not in use, which makes it a great option for small spaces. It typically has a few shelves and drawers that can be used to store clothes and other items.

What are the three types of vision boards?

Vision boards are a popular tool used by individuals to help manifest their desires and goals. There are three primary types of vision boards: physical, digital, and conceptual.

A physical vision board is a tangible item that you can see and interact with. This type of board is usually created using a poster board or corkboard, and you can attach images, quotes, and other items that represent your goals.

A digital vision board is an electronic version of a physical board. This type of board can be created using a variety of software and apps, and you can include images, videos, and text.

A conceptual vision board is an abstract representation of your goals. This type of board can be a mind map, a flow chart, or any other type of diagram.

How do you make a virtual vision board?

A vision board is a collection of images, objects, and words that help you visualize your goals and dreams. You can make a vision board in any form you like, but the most popular way to create one is by using a poster board or cork board. However, you can also make a virtual vision board using a computer or phone.

To make a virtual vision board, start by finding an online tool or app that lets you create a digital vision board. There are many different options to choose from, so find one that fits your needs. Once you’ve found an app, create an account and start adding images, objects, and words that represent your goals and dreams. You can add anything you like, but be sure to include images and words that inspire you and make you feel motivated.

Once you’ve finished creating your virtual vision board, be sure to revisit it often. The best way to make the most of your vision board is to look at it every day and let the images and words inspire you to take action towards your goals.

How do you travel the world?

There are many ways to travel the world. Some people take cruises, some people backpack, and others take a more relaxed approach and go on tour buses. There are pros and cons to each approach, and the best way to travel really depends on the person.

Cruises can be a great way to see a lot of different places in a short amount of time. You can visit multiple countries in a week or two, and you don’t have to worry about booking hotels or figuring out transportation. Cruises can be expensive, however, and they’re not always the best option for people who want to get to know the local culture.

Backpacking is a great way to see a lot of different places, and it’s also a great way to save money. You can stay in hostels and eat cheap street food, and you don’t have to worry about reserving rooms or buying tickets in advance. Backpacking can be a lot of fun, but it can also be exhausting, and it’s not always the best option for people who want to relax on their vacation.

Tour buses are a great option for people who want to see a lot of different places but don’t want to have to do any of the planning. You can buy a package that includes airfare, hotels, and transportation, and you don’t have to worry about anything else. This is a great option for people who want to see a lot of different places but don’t have a lot of time to spare.

How do you make a simple vision board?

A vision board is a great way to manifest your dreams and goals into reality. It is a visual representation of what you want to achieve or manifest in your life. The key to making a vision board that works is to keep it simple. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make a simple vision board:

1.Choose a medium. You can use a poster board, a cork board, a piece of paper, or even your computer.

2. Decide what you want to put on your board. You can include images, quotes, or both.

3. Collect your images and quotes. You can find images and quotes online, in magazines, or even create your own.

4. Arrange your images and quotes on your board. You can arrange them however you like.

5. Look at your vision board regularly. The more you look at it, the more you will be inspired to achieve your goals.

SNACKLE BOXES ARE OFFICIALLY ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I’VE SEEN ON TIKTOK. I HAD TO TRY THE VIRAL TREND OF MAKING A CHARCUTERIE BOARD IN A TACKLE BOX TO SHARE WITH YOU GUYS! NOT ONLY IS IT SO EASY TO THROW TOGETHER, IT’S THE PERFECT WAY TO TRAVEL WITH SNACKS!

snackle box: the ultimate traveling charcuterie board

OK SO YOU’RE PROBABLY ASKING, WHAT’S A SNACKLE? A SNACKLE BOX IS A PLAY ON WORDS… SNACKLE MEANING SNACKS IN A TACKLE BOX!

YOU CAN PUT ANY SNACKS IN A TACKLE BOX – IT’S LITERALLY THE MOST GENIUS, GAME CHANGING WAY TO ORGANIZE ALL OF YOUR SNACKS! I DIDN’T USE JUST ANY SNACKS, I MADE A GOURMET CHARCUTERIE BOARD!

YOU CAN USE ANY TACKLE BOX. I FOUND THIS INEXPENSIVE ONE ON AMAZON FOR ONLY $11. BUT IF YOU ALREADY OWN ONE, JUST USE WHAT YOU’VE GOT!

FROM THERE, YOU’LL WANT TO FILL IT WITH SNACKS! TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHERE YOU’RE HEADED FIRST. IF YOU PLAN WON’T BE ABLE TO EAT IT WITHIN AN HOUR OR TWO, STICK WITH NON PERISHABLES LIKE CRACKERS, NUTS & COOKIES. IF YOU WANT TO ADD CHEESE, MEAT OR FRUIT – YOU CAN ALSO PUT IT INTO A COOLER UNTIL YOU’RE READY TO SERVE.

I MADE THIS MEAT & CHEESE SNACKLE BOX FOR A LITTLE ROAD TRIP PICNIC. I LOVE THAT THE TACKLE COMPARTMENTS WORK SO WELL TO SEPARATE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SNACKS. YOU CAN SEPARATE FRUITS, DIPS, PICKLES, ETC, FROM YOUR CRACKERS SO THEY DON’T GET SOGGY!

HERE’S A LIST OF EVERYTHING I PUT IN MINE:

  • ASSORTED SLICED & CUBED CHEESE
  • MINI BABYBEL CHEESES
  • ROASTED ALMONDS
  • CHEESE CRISPS
  • BLACKBERRIES
  • HONEY STICKS

ANOTHER FUN IDEAS IS TO MAKE A DESSERT SNACKLE BOX WITH COOKIES, CANDY AND OTHER SWEET TREATS! YOU CAN MIX & MATCH, ADDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SNACKS TO EACH TRAY OF THE BOX TOO!

Jetset Times

It’s often challenging to contain your giddy inspiration when you know you’re going away on vacation.

Travel mood board

But when ideas and plans start flooding in, you need somewhere convenient to put them all so they don’t fall by the wayside. This is why mood boards are becoming a hit among travel enthusiasts.

Planning Trips the Fun Way

Moodboards are used for collecting and organising images and text to describe or reflect a specific concept. If lists aren’t your thing, a mood board is the perfect way to take note of what you want to do on your travels.

Types of Moodboard

Moodboards tend to come in two forms: the physical and the digital. If you like arts and crafts or have a penchant for cutting and sticking bits of paper together, a physical mood board is likely a good option for keeping things fun and visually stimulating.

The other option is a totally digital mood board. You don’t need to be an artist to do this, and there are plenty of apps available to help you create interactive mood boards for your vacation. Whichever approach you take, it’s worth considering the advantages and limitations of each.

Physical Moodboards

Physical mood boards often include magazine cuttings, notepad entries, and hand-written lists. You can get as creative as you want, creating the most visually stimulating and memorable pieces to help you plan your vacation.

  • Easier to personalise
  • Crafts can be fun
  • Simple to have on display
  • Can get damaged
  • Take a long time to complete
  • Collaboration is difficult
  • You have to wait until you get home to add to them

Digital Moodboards

Whether you use an app, social media or make your own, digital mood boards are a convenient way to visually map your plans. This option lets you open your mood board on multiple devices, and you can easily get going in just a few clicks.

  • Faster to make
  • More accessible
  • You can back them up
  • Easier to collaborate
  • Easy to update on the go
  • Less fun for some
  • Not as easy to customise
  • Tucked away in your phone or computer

To access your mood board, even if you are online, keep a preview on your phone. If you use Instagram content as inspiration for your itinerary and vlog plans, you can now save Instagram videos using free tools. Once you have them in your Gallery, you can shorten them and make edits for your perfect vacation visualiser!

What Should I Put on My Moodboard?

What you include in your mood board depends on what you want to do while you’re away. If you’re visiting a city for its architecture and culture, you might want to include pictures of pretty buildings or lists of museums and galleries. If food is the most important of the trip, you could identify the best restaurants and pin reviews to your mood board.

It’s a good idea to start with photos and the names of the activities/places you’re considering. If you’re in the planning stage, a mood board filled with images of potential destinations might be a suitable starting point. If you’ve booked your flights and want to shortlist activities for your vacation, you can get as detailed as you like on specific areas of interest.

Advanced Techniques

Moodboard ninjas can take their collages to the next level by using tags or keywords for specific subsections of their board. For example, you might want options for breakfast with kids, coffee with friends, or drinks and dinner. You can create tags for each category so you have all the options you need.

Collaboration

If you have friends over to your house regularly, physical mood boards could be a fun after-dinner activity. For most people, digital mood boards are more convenient. One of the biggest conveniences with physical moodboards is that you can take inspiration from anywhere online in just a few seconds by taking a screenshot.

Also, digital moodboards make it easy to share your thoughts with friends and get instant feedback on your ideas. If a friend had a bad experience at a restaurant you’re planning to visit, you might have to wait until that friend comes to your house before they can point it out on your physical board. On the other hand, digital versions make it easy for friends to comment online.

Get on board

Grazing boards are nothing new – but now the usual cheeseboards, charcuterie boards and smörgåsbords have been joined by everything from butter boards (and candles) to dessert platters. Easy to assemble and incredibly versatile, they're the ultimate stress-free spread for a festive gathering, or even just an evening in front of the TV. Whether you want to go traditional or whip up something a little more creative, our collection has something to suit everyone.

Click or scroll through our gallery to discover our top tips for assembling brilliant boards, with plenty of ideas and recipes for you to try.

<p>Regardless of what type of board you want to create – and we have sweet and savory options to suit everyone – there are certain steps that will make assembling your board easier. We spoke to Claire Gillies, Kitchen Expert at the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cleanandtidyhomeshow/">Clean & Tidy Home Show</a> and founder of <a href="https://deliciousandreal.com/">Delicious and Real</a>, for her recommendations.</p>

A step-by-step guide

Whatever type of board you want to create, there are certain steps that will make assembling your board easier. We spoke to Claire Gillies, founder of meal-planning resource  Delicious and Real , for her recommendations.

<p>First of all, start with the basics: choose your board and a small selection of bowls or jars for dips, sauces, and chutneys. At this stage, think about the kind of look you're going for. For example, Claire's preference is a wooden board with blue-and-white, vintage-style china bowls. The board size will determine how much you're able to add to your board, so choose carefully. </p>

Start with the basics

Firstly, choose your board and a small selection of bowls or jars for dips, sauces, and chutneys. At this stage, think about the kind of look you're going for. For example, Claire's preference is a wooden board with blue-and-white, vintage-style china bowls. The board size will determine how much you're able to add to your board, so choose carefully.

<p>Fill your bowls with sauces and small items that would otherwise scatter (think olives, hummus, nuts, honey, and pickles), and arrange them as anchor points on the board. “You want to leave spaces around them, which you can fill in with your other ingredients,” Claire says.</p>

Arrange your bowls

Fill your bowls with sauces and small items that would otherwise scatter (think olives, hummus, nuts, honey, and pickles), and arrange them as anchor points on the board. “You want to leave spaces around them, which you can fill in with your other ingredients,” Claire says.

<p>When laying out your ingredients, aim to fill in all the gaps. Claire recommends standing back after each section is done and looking at the board as a whole – it will make it easier to determine where to place the next items. To achieve an aesthetically pleasing board, you want to avoid leaving any blank spaces.</p>

Mind the gaps

When laying out your ingredients, aim to fill in all the gaps. Claire recommends standing back after each section is done and looking at the board as a whole – it will make it easier to determine where to place the next items. To achieve an esthetically-pleasing board, you want to avoid leaving any blank spaces.

<p>Using fruits and vegetables in your spread? Choose carefully! Claire says: “Opt for vibrant varieties that won’t discolor when chopped: pineapple, melon, strawberries, carrots, and peppers all work well.” If you're keen to include fruits and veggies that may turn brown after a while, like apples or avocados, there are a couple of hacks to keep them looking fresher for longer. Add a squeeze of lemon juice to keep avocado at its best, or quickly soak your fruit in 2 tbsp of honey mixed with 250ml (one cup) water. </p>

<p>For plenty of wow factor, it's important to fill your board with a variety of flavors, colors, shapes, and textures. If you're creating a cheeseboard, choose cheeses that look, feel, and taste significantly different. Slices of sharp Cheddar are really eye-catching when fanned; pair them with chunks of Parmesan for a crumbly mouthfeel, and a sweet and creamy Stilton to balance it all out. For a really unique platter, go to a cheesemonger and ask for small selections of cheeses to include. Ones flavoured with fruits and spices will work a charm, and you'll be surprised at the range you can find.  </p>

<p>For charcuterie boards, head over to your local deli instead of going for pre-packaged meats – you'll get better quality products, and you can select from a bigger range of options. When it comes to arranging your cured meats, you can stack, fan, or even roll them up for an aesthetically pleasing look. However you choose to present your charcuterie nibbles, make sure you serve them at room temperature for optimal mouthfeel. </p>

Deli delights

For charcuterie boards, you can use pre-packaged meats – or, even better, head to your local deli. When it comes to arranging your cured meats, you can stack, fan, or even roll them up. However you choose to present your charcuterie nibbles, make sure you serve them at room temperature for optimum flavor.

<p>One of the best things about grazing boards is that you can get really creative with the way you present your ingredients. Take these charcuterie roses, for example. To make them, all you need is a Champagne flute. Start by placing slices along the rim of the glass so that half of the round folds down in, and half out. Overlap the rounds around the flute, and layer them until you can no longer see the inside of the glass. Flip the flute over, and release your rose by twisting the glass back and forth gently.</p>

A flowery flourish

One of the best things about grazing boards is that you can get creative with the way you present your ingredients. Take these charcuterie roses, for example. To make them, all you need is a small glass, like an espresso glass. Start by placing slices along the rim of the glass so that half of the round folds down in, and half out. Overlap the rounds around the flute, and layer them until you can no longer see the inside of the glass. Flip the glass over and release your rose by twisting the glass back and forth gently.

<p>To make a show-stoppingly cute and creative board, take a cue from Japanese bento boxes, which often use cookie cutters to create sweetly-shaped fruits, biscuits, bread, and more. Using cookie cutters to shape your grazing board ingredients not only looks great, but it will also make it easier to keep your board to a certain theme.<br> <br> <strong>Now that you've learned the basics, check out our creative boards and recipe ideas...</strong></p>

<p>A hotel-worthy breakfast on a board! Simply arrange mini waffles or pancakes across your platter, then surround them with maple syrup, jams, chocolate sauce, and fresh whipped cream. Next, add some pastries (mini croissants, <em>pains au chocolat</em>, and Danish rolls are always a good idea), some fresh fruits (such as strawberries, grapes, melon, or pineapple chunks), and some protein (go for crispy bacon slices or some Prosciutto di Parma). With individual servings presented in glasses or jars, every guest will get their own mini-selection of meats and toppings. Simply dust off your nicest tumblers, Kilner jars or chunky wine glasses, layer up your cheese, meats and antipasti, and serve.

<p>Jump on the biggest trend of the year by making a board adorned with compound butter – butter mixed with other ingredients that add a sweet or savory flavor. Though it's all the rage now, compound butter isn't a new thing. In fact, it's rather retro. <em>Beurre composé</em>, as it is called in French, is a typical staple often found in French fine dining restaurants. To make it, whip your butter with your preferred addition – whether it's classic (honey, herbs, or garlic, for example) or crazy (bacon jam, crispy chicken skin, or truffle) – and then spread it onto a board. Top with crunchy garnishes and a sprinkle of coarse salt, and serve with toasted bread or crackers.  </p>

Jump on a recent grazing board trend with butter. Beurre composé, as it's called in France, is a typical staple often found in French fine dining restaurants. To make it, whip softened butter with an ingredient or ingredients of your choice – whether it's classic (honey, herbs or garlic, for example) or offbeat (like bacon jam, crispy chicken skin or truffle) – and then spread it onto a board. Top with crunchy garnishes and a sprinkle of coarse salt, then serve with toasted bread or crackers.

<p>This ingenious creation takes bread and butter to delicious new heights. The butter candle is all over TikTok and makes a truly show-stopping centerpiece for celebrations and dinner parties. It basically involves shaping softened butter into a candle shape, adding a food-safe candle wick and placing it inside a hollowed-out loaf of bread. To serve you simply set it alight and mop up all that tasty melted butter with chunks of bread. There are plenty of guides to making the interactive dish, but we love this garlic butter version from <a href="http://cabotcreamery.com/blogs/recipes/garlic-butter-candle-recipe">Cabot Creamery</a>.</p>

For a deliciously decadent hot chocolate board, all you need is some good quality hot chocolate and your favorite toppings (we like marshmallows, freshly whipped cream, berries, chocolate chips, wafers and chocolate shavings). You could even flavor your drink with cinnamon, orange, chili or mint.

<p>For the ultimate indulgent sharer, fill a board with your favorite cakes and desserts. Depending on how much time you have (and your level of baking skills) you can make your own, use store-bought cakes, or provide a tempting mix of both. Add a selection of mousses in small shot glasses, macarons, biscuits, tarts, and whatever other sweet treats you can lay your hands on. Irresistible!</p> <p><a href="https://www.lovefood.com/recipes/57311/raspberry-and-elderflower-macaroons-recipe"><strong>Get the recipe for raspberry and elderflower macarons here</strong></a></p>

Your 2024 Illinois Solar Eclipse Guide

Jan 03, 2024 • Outdoors & Regional

Explaining the 2024 Solar Eclipse

Imagine being in the Middle of Everything to witness a   twice-in-a-lifetime astronomical event . If you make your way to Southern Illinois, you'll get that chance.

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a rare, celestial event that occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, causing the sun to be partially or completely obscured from view as observed from a specific region on Earth. This happens because the moon's shadow is cast onto the Earth's surface, blocking or partially covering the sun's light.

When is the next total solar eclipse?

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse is set to occur, marking the final one visible from the United States until the year 2045.

Where will the eclipse be visible?

This celestial event will pass through a path of totality encompassing 13 states, including Illinois.

The moon passes in front of the sun for a solar eclipse

Where is the best place to view the eclipse?

While a partial solar eclipse will be visible across the entire country including much of the rest of Illinois, the special characteristics of a total solar eclipse can only be experienced within the narrow path of totality that will traverse Southern Illinois - specifically in areas such as Carbondale. It is only within this specific region and during this precise moment that you can observe the sky transitioning to darkness, resembling nighttime, as the Moon completely obstructs direct sunlight and unveils the solar corona—the Sun's outer atmosphere.

This means only residents of Southern Illinois and visitors alike will have the rare, unique opportunity to see this truly remarkable event and be witness to the rare astronomical phenomenon known as a total solar eclipse. Carbondale is on the center-line of the path of totality and will see 4 minutes and 9 seconds of totality for eclipse 2024 (nearly double what was seen in 2017). For other spots to view the eclipse in Illinois, keep reading!

How do I plan to see the eclipse?

If you're planning to travel, be sure to   view the Illinois Department of Transportation's website   for travel tips and info on how to prepare.

What to Bring with You

As you travel down to Southern Illinois, you might be wondering what essentials you'll need to bring with you to have a great solar eclipse road trip. We got you.

travel board ideas

Sun Protection (Of Course!)

This should be an obvious one! Make sure you’re prepared to be outside in the sun for a while. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sun umbrellas, and anything else that'll help make your viewing experience relaxing (and burn-free).

travel board ideas

Solar Eclipse Glasses

The actual full eclipse lasts a couple of minutes, but before it happens, the Sun, even a sliver of it, is still way too bright to look at with your own eyes. These glasses allow you to look right at it and see the outline of the moon move over.

travel board ideas

Check the Weather!

Bad weather can impact your solar eclipse experience. Make sure you check the weather forecast. If it's looking a little cloudy, dress appropriately and cross your fingers—but it's a rare occurrence so don't let a little cloud put you off.

travel board ideas

A Good Quality Camera

Don’t rely on your phone camera to get a good picture. If you're experienced and come prepared, you might just get that magic shot. You may need to use a “solar filter” to prevent harming your camera’s imaging sensor.

travel board ideas

Bug Spray/Repellent

If you choose a remote outdoor spot to enjoy the eclipse, make sure you stay one step ahead of pesky critters and bring some bug spray to keep them away (especially if you've followed our advice and packed a tasty lunch).

travel board ideas

Plenty of Food and Water

Depending on how early you get to your spot, the experience can last a while—and you might as well make a day of it! So bring plenty of food and water to keep you fed and hydrated—you don’t want to miss it trying to find lunch!

travel board ideas

Make a Pinhole Projector

In a pinch, a pinhole camera/projector can help you watch the eclipse unfold in a safe way. All you need is white card stock, aluminum foil, tape, scissors, and a pin or paper clip. It's also a great project to help pass the time.

Save for later

A man in a bright yellow jacket and black pants stands on a slope with one leg clipped into a snowboard and with mountains in the distance.

Can Reed Hastings Disrupt Skiing?

The Netflix co-founder bought Powder Mountain, in Utah, and is turning half of it into a private club for wealthy homeowners who pay a hefty annual fee. Will the public-private model fly?

On a Monday morning in early March, Reed Hastings, the billionaire co-founder and former chief executive of Netflix, clicked into the bindings on his snowboard and started off down one of the slopes at Powder Mountain, a ski area in Utah’s northeast corner. He quickly veered off the groomed trail into some well-spaced trees, and as he made turns over bumpy snow, you could hear his edges scratch against patches of ice.

“Not as good as I was hoping,” he said at the bottom. “But still not bad.”

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Mr. Hastings, 63, seemed to be enjoying the perks that come with his new gig: ski area owner. “I used to snowboard about 10 times a year,” he said. “Now getting out is part of the job.”

Last September, Mr. Hastings, bought a controlling interest in Powder Mountain for an undisclosed sum, inheriting more than $100 million in debt.

A small figure can be seen skiing down a snow covered ridge with a large snow covered mountain in the background.

Not long after, he announced that he was adopting a business model never before tried in the ski industry: He would make 2,000 acres of the mountain’s terrain private, accessible only to people who owned homes in an enclave atop the mountain and who paid a membership fee expected to run between $30,000 and $100,000 per year. The rest of the ski area would remain open to the public, underwritten by the private operation.

The move, he said, was a way to compete with the multimountain passes like Ikon and Epic, without drawing the crowds that come with them. “All of the independent ski areas are looking for ways to survive,” he said. “Going boutique, higher end, private, is probably where they need to go.”

Mr. Hastings, embraces the notion that he can disrupt the ski industry the way he disrupted entertainment, though he admits he’s learning the ski business on the fly.

Will it work?

“We’ll have to wait and see,” said Rick Kahl, 71, the longtime editor of Ski Area Management, a trade publication. “But I wouldn’t bet against the guy who started Netflix.”

Rickety chairlifts and charm

With 8,464 acres of skiable terrain, Powder Mountain, which averages around 360 inches of snow each season, is one of the largest ski areas in the United States. All of that terrain is on private land; most ski areas either lease their land from the U.S. Forest Service or operate on a patchwork of public and private land. Powder has rickety chairlifts and aging day lodges that imbue the place with a certain air of nostalgia. Adding to the charm is that, upon descending some runs, getting back to the lift requires hopping on an old bus.

And, because PowMow (as it’s affectionately referred to) is a bit off the beaten path and has very limited nearby lodging, there are never any crowds.

But the ski area — like many other independently owned resorts — has never been able to make money. Summit, an event-hosting group, bought it in 2013 and had huge plans to build a village with 500 homes, restaurants, bars and possibly even a neuroscience lab and high-altitude performance center. But it failed to sell many of the homesites, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for as little as a quarter acre of land, and the ski area continued to lose money.

Mr. Hastings, fed up with crowds at heavily developed Park City, had built a home at Powder in 2021. When Summit decided it wanted out, he swooped in.

“I felt I had to do it to preserve the experience here,” he said.

Mr. Hastings, whose net worth is $5.98 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index , immediately invested $100 million of his own money in the ski area, paying off a portion of the debt and purchasing four new chairlifts, which are set to be installed this summer.

He is also planning to build two day lodges with restaurants, private rentals and retail stores for the mountain’s private side, and a 40,000-square-foot lodge will serve as an afternoon and evening hub for members and feature a state-of-the-art spa.

Shortly after the announcement, Mr. Hastings pulled all existing lots on the mountain off the market. When he relists them, he said, the starting price will be $2 million. On Friday he announced that he had also purchased 2,400 acres of terrain adjacent to the ski area’s existing boundary, which will also only be accessible to members.

His bet is that if he can sell all the homesites, membership fees for the private portion of the ski area will pay for overhead and improvements on both the public and private sections.

The private experience

Mr. Hastings isn’t the only ski area owner with the notion that privatization might be a means toward profitability.

In 2022, the owners of Homewood Mountain Resort in Homewood, Calif., announced plans to restrict season pass and day ticket sales to certain Homewood homeowners. After public outcry, that plan was scrapped, according to a spokeswoman for the resort.

The new owners of Windham Mountain Club, in New York, announced in October that they would charge a membership fee starting at $175,000 that would give members access to special amenities and let them ski the slopes in the mornings before they open to the public.

The Yellowstone Club, which was founded in 1997, in Big Sky, Mont., is perhaps most similar to Mr. Hastings’s model. Club members have access to more than 2,700 acres of private ski and snowboard terrain, and if they have also have a pass to Big Sky Resort, which shares a border with the club, can ski directly onto Big Sky’s 5,800 acres of public slopes.

Before skiing together, Mr. Hastings and I sat on brown leather sofas in his Powder Mountain Village home — a cylindrical-shaped modern house with a concrete kitchen island, an impressive looking espresso machine and panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains and Ogden Valley — as he explained to me why the changes at the ski area were necessary.

“I’m investing a lot of money in Powder Mountain but my plan was never to subsidize it,” he said. “My passion is the charities that I work with, but I never saw this as a charitable endeavor.”

As he looked at the mountain’s finances, he said, “it became clear that we needed to do something significant.”

In the end, that something was leveraging the mountain’s available real estate. “We decided that we needed to lure people here by offering a private experience that they can’t get anyplace else,” he said.

If his plan pans out, Harris Sondak, the former mayor of Alta, Utah, and a professor at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business , said that more ski areas might adopt a public/private model to increase revenue. “Running a ski area is expensive, and any new way to make money is often embraced,” he said.

In addition to taking part of the mountain private, Mr. Hastings is raising the price of a season pass to $1,399 from $1,259. A season pass for seniors 75 and older, which used to be free, will now cost $1,049. The number of season passes sold, which had been capped, will no longer be limited, though the number of day tickets will.

Much of the ski community, particularly locals, was upset by the changes. “I’m very concerned,” said Aaron Vexler, 48, who has owned a condominium at Powder Mountain since 2012. “They’re severely limiting the terrain, raising prices, and also selling more passes. How do you sell more passes and keep the ski area uncrowded?” Others, feeling as though Mr. Hastings is only interested in making money, gave the new owner a nickname, “Greed” Hastings.

During our conversation, Mr. Hastings pointed out that three of the new lifts he is putting in will provide access to public terrain. As part of the announcement of the new private terrain, Mr. Hastings also said that more than 1,000 acres of terrain will be added to the public side of the ski area, opening in 2025. “All the new terrain will help spread people out and help keep the ski area uncrowded,” he said.

Checking out the new terrain

After my runs with Mr. Hastings, Kevin Mitchell, Powder Mountain’s general manager, and I hopped in a small snowcat to explore some of the new private terrain in an area known as Davenport, which is currently used for guided cat skiing.

After a 15-minute ride, we got out and put on our skis to descend a steep slope, making smeary turns on untouched snow through the trees. I was impressed. But when we got back into the cat and headed around the bend, I was astonished.

Above us I saw steep, craggy pitches — terrain that’s so challenging it has garnered attention from the professional snowboarder Travis Rice, who has created a series of extreme snowboarding competitions known as Natural Selection . Mr. Mitchell said Mr. Rice was considering holding one of his events there. A lift is planned for the area, though for next season, members will ride a snowcat to the top.

Before venturing into Davenport, I’d wondered if the existing slopes that were becoming private were appealing enough to entice well-heeled skiers and snowboarders to throw down on $2 million lots and high membership fees. With Davenport, the private offering is the total package.

“The overall experience for the private community will feel integrated but elevated,” said Alex Zhang, Powder’s chief creative officer. “The homeowners have access to premium conveniences — such as ski-in ski-out housing, upscale lodges and private lifts — resulting in untracked powder that last for days.”

A few days later, we checked out the new public terrain. A large portion of it is known as “Don’t Mention It,” or DMI for short. It was named by backcountry skiers who found the descents there so good that they didn’t want anybody else to know about them. After a short hike beyond the ski area boundary, I was able to get a full view of the slopes and could see why they so coveted them.

Dozens of steep, long runs and chutes wind down the vast expanse, with huge boulders jutting out of the land like prehistoric monuments. A big open bowl makes up much of the new terrain, but extreme skiers and snowboarders will drool over the north-facing slopes, which trump the skiing in Davenport and, when they open, will likely be considered some of the best skiing in the country.

“There will be a lift back here and maybe two lifts,” Mr. Mitchell said. “We have a year’s worth of planning to do.”

Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait that long. I dropped onto a slope and skied through well-spaced trees, descending the length of nearly seven football fields. It hadn’t snowed much in about eight days, but the run still held light powder that drifted over my boot tops. At the bottom, my legs were burning and I had a frozen grin on my face.

Traditions unchanged

One day after skiing, I grabbed a stool at the Powder Keg, a bar at the mountain that’s famous for its greasy burgers and its old-school ambience. I drank a beer and listened to a local woman strum her guitar and belt out folk tunes. None of that will change.

Though Timberline Lodge, the building that houses the Powder Keg, will get an upgrade, Mr. Hastings said he is intent on keeping many of Powder Mountain’s sacred spots and traditions unchanged. When finishing runs in the area known as Powder Country, for example, you’ll still get on a bus back to the lifts.

“You can’t just tear down a building, put up a new one, call it the same thing, and expect people to feel the same way about it,” Mr. Hastings said.

Mr. Hastings said it’s that old-school vibe that makes Powder Mountain special. “We’re building a luxury experience on the private side of the mountain,” he said. “But many of the homeowners will still ski the public side and want to experience the parts of Powder Mountain that you won’t be able to get in the village.”

At the time of my visit, Mr. Hastings had college friends visiting.

“I sent them to the Powder Keg for lunch,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite places to eat.”
