audrey

There’s nothing Singaporeans love more than good food and cheap shopping, so it’s no wonder that we flock in droves to Johor Bahru across the Causeway. Whether you’re going on a quick day trip or a weekend getaway, the many cafes, restaurants and megamalls will be sure to delight you.

If the thought of being stuck in annoying traffic jams and long customs queues turns you off, fret not! The KTM Shuttle Tebrau is your ticket to hassle-free JB jaunts and it won’t break the bank either. Departing from Woodlands, the Shuttle Tebrau gets you to JB in just 5 minutes and prices vary based on your starting point. As of January 2024, ticket prices for a one-way ticket are as follows:

JB to Woodlands: RM5 (~S$1.42)

Woodlands to JB: S$5

Guess what’s even better? Children aged 4 and below ride for free—they just need to register at the ticket counter before boarding.

It’s quick, convenient and oh-so-affordable. Read on to find out how to take the train from Singapore to JB.

Buying Train tickets to JB from Singapore

The sole train service between Singapore and JB is Shuttle Tebrau, which is operated by KTM, Malaysia’s national rail company.

This is the daily Shuttle Tebrau schedule from Singapore to JB :

Now, onto snagging those tickets. Don’t wait till the last minute, especially if you’re eyeing a weekend getaway. Book online via the KTM website or try your luck at the train station counter. But hey, I’d recommend snagging those return tickets online pronto–they vanish faster than free samples at a food fair!

This is how much tickets cost:

Step 1: Booking KTM train tickets to JB online

Visit the KTMB Integrated Ticketing System (KITS) to book your tickets for Shuttle Tebrau.

Enter your origin and destination, select your travel dates and the number of persons travelling, and you’ll be taken to the next screen to select train timings.

As you can see, tickets for 9 March 2024, the first weekend of the school holidays are mostly gone already. You can, however, search for more departure and return dates.

Make sure you have your passport on hand as you’ll need your passport details to complete your booking. You’ll have to create an account first and you can do so via email, or your Facebook or Google accounts.

KITS accepts a variety of payment options, including Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards.

If you didn’t manage to get tickets online, you can try buying them at the KTM counter at Woodlands Train Checkpoint. You’ll need to present your passport to the counter staff and pay in cash. Ticket sales end 20 minutes before train departure.

Over-the-counter tickets usually sell out during peak travel periods like weekends, public holidays and school holidays. If that happens don’t worry — you can cross over to the regular checkpoint and catch a bus to JB instead.

Step 2: Getting to Woodlands Train Checkpoint

train to JB guide 2018 woodlands train checkpoint

You’ve booked your tickets online, now it’s time to find out how to get to Woodlands Train Checkpoint. It’s located in the same vicinity as the regular Woodlands Checkpoint, and is near the bus stop and drop-off point.

To get to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint, take the train to Marsiling station and exit via exit C. You’ll emerge at the bus stop opposite the train station. Take bus 856 and ride 3 stops, alight and walk to the checkpoint.

There are other buses that go to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint bus stop, and you can take bus 911 from Woodlands interchange as well.

Step 3: Getting your physical/e-ticket scanned

Head to level 2 and join the crowd of people milling around waiting for the boarding gates to open. You should aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before your train departs so that you have sufficient time to clear immigration on both sides. If your train is at 9 am, you should be at the boarding gates by 8.20 am.

You’ll need to show a hard copy or digital copy of your train ticket to the ticket staff, who will scan it as you pass through the gates.

If you encounter issues with your ticket, you might have to go to the KTM ticket office to validate your online booking. The KTM ticket office is located on the ground floor — there’s usually a queue so be warned!

The staff will probably ask you to show proof of your booking so that they can print a physical ticket for you. Ensure that you download a copy of your ticket to your phone in case you have issues accessing the internet.

Step 4: Take the 5-minute train from Singapore to JB

You’ll have to clear Singapore customs first which is a breeze at the automatic gates.

At Malaysian customs, the staff will check your passport and stamp it manually. After picking up your bag(s) from the scanning machine, proceed to board the train.

It’s free seating so park yourself by the window or aisle, depending on which you prefer. Sit back and enjoy the view of the Straits of Johor as the train zips ahead. If the train is full and there are no seats, you’ll have to stand, but what’s a few minutes?

train to JB guide 2018

In 5 minutes, you’ll arrive in JB Sentral, where you can feast and shop to your heart’s content. The journey from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral should take around 30 minutes. Compared to taking a bus, car or taxi, where travelling time can be unpredictable, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau is fast and reliable.

Taking the return train from JB to Singapore

The train journey back to Singapore from JB is similar. Make sure you arrive 30 minutes before the train departs. The boarding gate opens 30 minutes before departure and closes 10 minutes before departure.

Head to the gate when it’s time to board. Your passport will serve as a boarding pass—simply scan it at the Automated Controller Gate (ACG) and you’re through. Check out the handy pictorial guide below for the step-by-step process.

train from Singapore to JB

Bear in mind that you can only check in with your passport when taking the train from JB to Singapore, but not from Singapore to JB. (Not yet, anyway!)

What is the best time to travel to JB?

Picking the train ensures you’ll be spared from the horrendous Causeway jams when you commute by car. Monday to Thursday are your best bet for a smooth and hassle-free journey. Avoid Fridays and weekends as the crowds are intense.

As for timing, mornings around 7 am and evenings around 6 pm tend to be packed as people are commuting to work and back. Try to go before 7 am and return to Singapore after 8 pm if you’re not a fan of rush hour chaos. Now that you’re all clued in on taking the KTM Shuttle Tebrau, get ready for more frequent escapes to JB!

There are only two main lines in Peninsular Malaysia with railway services operated by Malaysian Railways - Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (known as KTM or KTMB).

The main line which travels up from Woodlands Station in Singapore passes through Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, then takes a branch line to Butterworth, where you can catch a short ferry ride over to George Town on Penang island.

The line then heads north in to Thailand passing close by the ferry ports to Langkawi island.

The other, less frequented line travels through the centre of the country along what is known as "The Jungle Railway," up to the north-east corner of Malaysia close to Kota Baru and the Thai border.

Here the railway line ends, only to start again on the Thai side of the border, with trains going to Hat Yai Junction and all stations north.

From July '15, KTM Malaysia Railways started operating the new high-speed Electric Train Services (ETS) on new routes between Gemas - KL Sentral - Butterworth and Padang Besar on the Thailand border, making travel by KTM train in Malaysia much faster than before.

Travel by Train in Thailand (SRT)

Thailand has the largest network of rail track in SE Asia with trains operated by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) heading out of the capital, Bangkok, in all directions.

The Southern line takes you down along the eastern coastline and connects to ferries out to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, then down to the border with Malaysia.

The Northern line takes you to the popular destination of Chiang Mai, while the North-Eastern and Eastern lines take you to the borders of Cambodia and Laos.

All these railway lines are served by Bangkok's main train station, Hua Lamphong in the heart of the city.

A short branch line leaves Bangkok from Thonburi station and has services to the west.

This is mainly used by tourists to travel along the infamous "Death Railway" and the Bridge over the River Kwai at Kanchanaburi.

The best way to see any country is to travel by train and SE Asia has a good network of railway lines that connect you from the south in Singapore, all the way up through Malaysia and Thailand to the edges of Cambodia and across the Mekong River into Laos.

In the years to come, there is a planned expansion to connect Thailand to Vietnam and China by rail, by rebuilding the lines in Cambodia and building new railway lines in Laos.

So in a few years time, you should be able to travel overland from Singapore to Europe, via China, all the way by train, without the use of a bus (which is required at the moment).

Malaysia railways – a guide to train travel in Malaysia

Malaysia railways - a guide to train travel in Malaysia

Getting the train in Malaysia should be part of any overland travel experience in mainland Southeast Asia. The railway line from the Thailand border to the Singapore border forms part of a journey where you can travel by train from Laos to Singapore.

The most frequent train services in Malaysia are through the more populated west coast states. There is also the iconic Jungle Railway that runs through the middle of the peninsula to the east coast.

There is only one small line in Borneo Malaysia, with no railway connecting the states of Sabah and Sarawak.

This guide lists all of the current railways in Malaysia, how to buy tickets, and other frequently asked questions.

How to buy tickets

Tickets can be bought for same-day travel and in advance at stations. ETS services sell out so it is best to book in advance.

Malaysia railway lines

These are the main railway lines in Malaysia. There is some overlap where the national railway (KTM) operates commuter railways in the Greater KL area (Klang Valley). Those railways are excluded from the list and are listed in the KL urban rail transit article (coming soon).

West Coast Line

Kuala Lumpur train station

The West Coast Line is the main line of Malaysia, running from the Thailand border to the Singapore border via Kuala Lumpur.

This line is being upgraded to a double-track electric railway, enabling faster trains and more frequent services. The project is about 3/4 completed, with the Gemas to Johor Bahru the only section remaining of the old single-track railway using diesel locomotives.

The Line from Padang Besar to Gemas is now a double-track electric railway, and this is served by the KTM Electric Train Service (ETS). The ETS has an operating speed of up to 140 km/h, making it one of the fastest trains in Southeast Asia .

Ipoh railway station.

Gemas-Kuala Lumpur-Butterworth

ETS at Butterworth

There are direct trains (ETS) from Gemas and Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth (the station for Penang) for connections to Georgetown. Butterworth Station is next to the ferry terminal, so foot passengers can get a boat to the island of Penang.

The train to Butterworth is on the Bukit Mertajam Junction–Butterworth Branch Line, which branches off the West Coast Line after Simpang Ampat.

Butterwork is also served by KTM Komuter from Butterworth to Padang Rengas.

Here is my review of getting the train from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth .

Butterworth–Padang Besar

KTM Komuter Northern Sector operates from Butterworth to Padang Besar. From Padang Besar, there are trains to Hat Yai and Bangkok.

East Coast Line

Jungle Railway in Malaysia

The East Coast Line is a single-track metre gauge line that runs from Gemas to Tumpat in Kelantan State. It gets its name because it terminates on the east coast, even though it travels through the interior for most of the way. The railway is better known as the Jungle Railway as it passes through the jungle of the peninsula (though a more accurate description would be the palm oil plantation railway).

The railway passes by Taman Negara National Park which can be accessed from Jerantut station.

The railway is also used as a way to get to the Perhentian Islands, via transfers at Tumpat.

It’s not an efficient way to travel if you are starting or ending in KL as you have to go via Gemas. For visitors, it’s a way to add some variety to your travels if planned in advance.

Here is my review of the Jungle Railway, with the best train times and most scenic sections .

The East Coast Line (as this is officially known) may have to change its name in the future when the East Coast Rail Link is completed. This is a new railway that will connect Kuala Lumpur to the actual east coast of Malaysia.

Sabah Railway

Official website: sabahrailway.my

The Sabah Railway runs from Sembulan (Kota Kinabalu) and travels south for 134 km to Tenom. Considering how big Borneo Malaysia is, this is not a lot of railways. For visitors, the section between Beaufort and Tenom travels through the Padas River gorge.

Here is a review of the new (old) North Borneo Railway .

International train services

Padang besar-bangkok.

The International Express is a State Railways of Thailand overnight service that runs from Bangkok to Padang Besar (Malaysia). This used to run from Bangkok to Butterworth, but the rest of the journey is now completed by KTM Malaysia.

JB Sentral-Woodlands

The railway from JB Sentral to Woodlands is the last remnant of the old Singapore-KL Railway. This shuttle service takes 5 minutes, and it usually books out a month in advance due to its popularity with cross-border commuters.

Read more at www.ktmb.com.my/intercity-from-jb-to-woodlands.html .

Here is my review of the KTM Shuttle Tebrau .

Special trains

Sawadee special.

KTM has run a special overnight train service from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai (the “Sawadee Special” train). This is not a scheduled service so it is placed in the category of special trains.

Eastern & Oriental Express

The Eastern & Oriental Express is a luxury train that runs tours between Bangkok and Singapore, with stops in Malaysia. The service was suspended during the pandemic, but it is expected to recommence in 2024.

North Borneo Railway

The North Borneo Railway is a special steam train service in Sabah. The train runs from Tanjung Aru to Papar and the trip takes about 4 hours.

The service is suspended until further notice.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore? There used to be a direct Kuala Lumpur-Singapore service, but that was discontinued in 2015. The trip now requires three trains that need precise planning to do it in one day.

Here is my guide on How to go from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by train .

Is there a high-speed railway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore? There is a plan for a high-speed railway between Singapore and KL, but that has been put on hold. Read more about the proposed Kuala Lumpur–Singapore High-Speed Railway .

Is there a train to Georgetown? There is no train to Georgetown. The nearest station is Butterworth, which is next to the ferry terminal for Georgetown.

Are there international trains from Malaysia? It is possible to get the train from Malaysia to Thailand at Padang Besar and Singapore from JB Sentral. In Borneo Malaysia, there are no connections to Brunei or Indonesia.

KTM Train Schedule From Singapore To JB

The KTM Train (Shuttle Terbau) is the one and only train heading to Johor from Singapore.

KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) is a reputable Malaysian railway operator which has provided its services for many years now.

So, I wasn’t too worried about it being much of a hassle.

Basically, their train rides start from Woodlands Train Checkpoint (Singapore) to JB Sentral (Johor).

Here is their train rides schedule:

How Much KTM Train Ticket Cost From Singapore To JB

It only cost me SGD10 for a to and fro journey for the train ride to Johor (which later I found out that I could get it cheaper! I’ve shared my “secret” in the FAQ Question No.3 at the end of this article)

It seemed like a really good deal considering how much time (and energy) I could save compared to driving my car to Johor.

Train to JB ticket can be purchased at Woodlands Train Checkpoint KTM counter , JB Sentral KTM counter or KTM Website .

The table below shows you how much train tickets cost:

There are a few tips that will come in handy when you want to purchase your tickets:

  • Make sure you bring sufficient cash (SGD for tickets at the Woodlands Train Checkpoint counter or MYR for tickets at JB Sentral) if you want to purchase your tickets at the ticketing counters.
  • The counters will STOP selling tickets 20 minutes before departure time .
  • If you want to travel over the weekend, public holidays or school holidays, do book your tickets in advance ! (their tickets sells out extremely FAST during these periods)
  • However, if the tickets are fully sold out , you can still board a bus to Johor from Woodlands CIQ .

Step 2: Choose my dates of depart and return as well as how many people would be travelling (Adults/Children).

Sounds easy right?

Things to take note:

  • With Shuttle Tebrau newly implemented scanning system, your passport is actually your boarding pass. So much more advance now, isn’t it?
  • However, I would advise you to keep a copy of your email confirmation in your electronic device in case of any complications.

Also read: How To Get To JB Sentral From Singapore

The day of my journey to board the train to JB Sentral from Woodlands Train Checkpoint arrived.

I being the “planner me” have studied in advance on the ways I can get to Woodlands Train Checkpoint station.

With the combination of MRT rides and one bus trip, I was able to get to Woodlands Train Checkpoint easily.

I have broken down for you on the most convenient MRT stations and busses to take from anywhere in Singapore (you are welcome! …hehehe)

Depending on which area in Singapore you are from, you may choose to go to these MRT Stations to grab your bus to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint bus stop:

Option 1: For me, I like to travel to Marsiling MRT Station [NS8] (Red Line / North-South Line) to grab my bus ride.

Just cross over the road to the bus stop and take either Bus No.856 or 950 to go to Woodlands Train Checkpoint bus stop.

Option 2: The other option is to travel to Woodlands MRT Station [NS9] (Red Line / North-South Line) .

From here, you may choose to take Bus No. 178, 903 or 911 to go to Woodlands Train Checkpoint bus stop.

Option 3: Kranji MRT Station [NS7] (Red Line / North-South Line) would be the next option.

The available busses from here to Woodlands Train Checkpoint bus stop are Bus No. 170, 170A or 178.

So now I have arrived at Woodlands Train Checkpoint.

Woodlands Train Checkpoint

As I have mentioned earlier, your physical ticket or e-ticket is your boarding ticket.

All I needed was to scan my physical ticket or e-ticket by KTM staff at the gate to board the train (Shuttle Tebrau).

KTM Staff Scan Passengers Train Tickets From Singapore To JB

  • Make sure that your passport has at least 30 days validity period before you travel.
  • The gate doesn’t open earlier than 30 minutes before train departure time .
  • Important to take note that the boarding gate closes 10 minutes before train departure time .
  • You’re only can check-in using your passport when you taking the train from JB to Singapore instead of Singapore to JB
  • I strongly suggest for you to be here 30 minutes before your departure time in case for whatever complications that might arise (better earlier than late right?)

Woodlands Train Checkpoint Waiting Area

  • Don’t panic if you have any trouble during the process of scanning your train physical ticket/e-ticket. Just head on to the KTM office located on the ground floor and they will help to solve your problem by validating your ticket.

Step 4: Take The 5 Minutes Train Ride To JB From Singapore

The whole process after I scanned my physical ticket/e-ticket reminded me of being in an airport.

Inside View Train From Singapore To JB

Staff at the Malaysian side checked and stamped on my passport after the immigration process.

All the passengers will then need to load their bags onto a conveyor belt through a scanning machine before being allowed to board the train.

Very similar process when you want to board a flight at the airport isn’t it?

Simple and easy!

  • Although you might see a seating number on your ticket, be well prepared on NOT getting that exact seat.
  • Since it is just a 5 minutes ride, people normally just sit on any available seats.
  • Worst case scenario is that you would need to stand (which is not a big deal because it is just for 5 minutes)

Travelling by train is an adventurous way to explore a destination. Some might even consider long train journeys to be romantic or idyllic.

This is because on many scenic train journeys, passengers are often taken through the countryside, hills and valleys.

For avid traveller Andrew T. Post, though, it’s the old-fashioned quality of rail travel that makes the journey even more rewarding.

“Nobody travels by train any more, at least not anyone who’s interested in getting anywhere in a fast or efficient manner,” he said in a post on Quora.

While there may be many advantages to taking other modes of transportation (“It’s far cheaper to drive, and it’s far faster to fly”), Post said nothing beats the joy of travelling by train.

It’s a more comfortable option too, he said.

“They’re like hotels on wheels. You have a big seat with plenty of legroom and a huge window, or possibly even a cosy cabin all to yourself. Not to mention there’s a tastefully appointed dining car in which to take your meals and watch the scenery roll by.

“If you have your own sleeper, you can choose to interact with your fellow passengers or not, at your leisure. There are exceptions, of course, but on most trains that I’ve been on, this is the case,” Post said.

The man has ridden trains through seven countries. These included Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia.

“There’s nothing I love more than being on a train, especially in a foreign country, and pulling up to a station and seeing the exotic name of the place written on a sign hanging over the platform. I love to look out of the train windows (or better yet, get down and explore), gazing over the town or village and getting a sense of the place,” he said of his travels.

In Malaysia, rail tourism was highlighted recently in the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry’s Tourism Recovery Plan 2022, which saw the ministry forging a joint strategic cooperation with KLIA Express and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTM) to offer discounts for most train journeys.

KTM is the major operator of intercity trains in Peninsular Malaysia. It operates diesel-hauled KTM Intercity passenger trains and the electric KTM ETS passenger trains.

Meanwhile, the Sabah State Railway operates the only railway line in the state, running from Kota Kinabalu in the West Coast to Tenom in the Interior Division. Sarawak does not have a railway system although there have been plans to start one.

Slow discovery

Rail tourism these days is associated with slow travel. Slow travel – which has been gaining traction as a “post-pandemic” tourism trend – does not just refer to the speed at which a trip is taken, but also by how meaningful or purposeful the journey is.

Experts have pointed out that travelling by train endorses the concept of slow travel. This enables tourists to enjoy the time taken to travel rather than simply rushing to go from one destination to the next.

“It’s free of the rushed, breathless, stuffy crassness to which air travel is heir, and it has none of the urgency or responsibility of car travel,” Post said in his commentary.

In Malaysia, rail tourism goes hand-in-hand with rural tourism. A train gives travellers the chance to explore small towns that are tucked away from the busy city.

And local travellers are beginning to take notice of trains as a means of travel.

The KTM train ride from Tumpat to Dabong (in Kelantan) was a surprise hit among locals amid the pandemic. The railway tourism product – dubbed “Train to Dabong” – from Wakaf Bharu, Tumpat to Dabong in Kuala Krai, is over 140km and takes almost three hours.

Kelantan Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry director Mohd Aidil Afizie Daud said the journey is one of the 10 iconic tourism products in the state, which is placed under its Homestay And Train programme.

“Dabong Railway Station is a transit station for Homestay Jelawang near Gunung Stong. The experience of taking the train in Kelantan is very different because regular trains around the world usually pass through concrete buildings like the west coast route,” he said.

The train to Dabong passes through rural areas full of tall trees much like a tropical rainforest. It has even earned the nickname the “Jungle Train”.

Rail and rural

The success of the train to Dabong is testament to how rail and rural tourism are complementary to one another.

It was something that Taylor’s University’s Farah Atiqah Mohamad Noor, Vikneswaran Nair and Paolo Mura discussed in an academic paper.

The Rail travel: Conceptualising a study on slow tourism approaches in sustaining rural development paper looked at how trains could expand the tourism sector in small towns.

KTM is the main operator of intercity trains in Peninsular Malaysia. — Filepic

Their research states that as there are numerous small towns along the intercity train route in Peninsular Malaysia, rural tourism opportunities abound. They suggest that these towns have a strong potential to be proper tourism destinations.

“The main idea for using rail travel as a gateway to rural tourism experience is (to adapt) the concept of slow travel that has been forgotten by many tourists nowadays,” the researchers wrote.

A journey on a train is certainly the way to go if you’re looking for a scenic passage through Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. Riding past kampung houses and green plantations will unearth many remarkable sights. We take a look at some amazing train journeys in the country.

A scenic train ride through lush green cityscapes and rivers will take passengers from the Kuala Lumpur metropolis to the quaint city of Ipoh. Depending on the train model that you take, the journey could last between two and four hours.

Built in 1917, the Ipoh Railway Station is one of the oldest train stations in Malaysia. — Tourism Malaysia

Upon arrival in the capital of Perak, you will be greeted by the old-world, colonial charm of the Ipoh Railway Station. Built in 1917, it is one of the oldest train stations in Malaysia.

Over the years, Ipoh has also built a reputation for being a foodie paradise. Tuck into culinary delights such as bean sprouts chicken rice, hor fun, chee cheong fun and tau foo fah.

There’s also a burgeoning street art scene in Ipoh. And once you have searched for the many cool murals in the area, stop by a kopitiam for a cup of famous Ipoh white coffee.

Gua Keris in Dabong, Kelantan, is where a special light phenomenon called the 'God Light” happens. — CHESTER CHIN/The Star

Many locals will travel from Kota Baru or Tumpat for a short day trip in Dabong. Now that travel bans have been lifted, Dabong continues to attract visitors due to a plethora of activities and attractions available there.

An absolute highlight is a special light phenomenon called the “God Light” that takes place inside Gua Keris. Apart from that, the town is famous for many other outdoor adventures. It is home to several majestic peaks (Gunung Ayam, Gunung Stong and Gunung Che Tahir just to name a few) as well as the multi-tiered Jelawang Waterfall.

The Sabah State Railway, the only rail transport system in Borneo, is an important aspect of colonial history. Formerly known as the North Borneo Railway, the 134km line travels from Tanjung Aru in Kota Kinabalu to Tenom.

The Sabah State Railway offers railway service to three major towns – Papar, Beaufort, and Tenom. The route passes through scenic coastal sights and fertile hinterlands.

Papar is an agricultural town, yet it is also close enough to the sea that you can spend your day in a picnic by the beach. You can shop for local fruits and unique handicraft at Tamu Papar if you’re there on Sunday.

In Beaufort, look out for ambuyat, a local dish made from sago flour and eaten with a simple yet delicious sour fish soup. Over in Tenom, visit the coffee factories or look out for coffee farm tours. All three towns offer plenty of outdoor and cultural pursuits too.

You can also take a private train service – called the North Borneo Railway service – to experience a ride on a refurbished colonial-style steam train. The train runs on the same tracks as the regular daily service, but its last stop is in Papar. You will also be served a tiffin-style breakfast and lunch in your own coach during the journey.

If you’re up for a long voyage on the train, then the south-north route from Johor Baru to Butterworth in Penang should appeal. The journey requires a bit more planning as there is no direct train between the two destinations. But it’s perfect for adventurous travellers who prefer a bit of challenge.

Travellers will first need to take a shuttle train from JB to Gemas before transferring on the ETS towards Butterworth. Once in Butterworth, a short ferry ride will bring you to the island city.

Here’s a tip: Time your ferry ride during sunset and you will get the most amazing view of Penang over the sea.

Alternatively, stay in Butterworth and explore a relatively slower pace town. Discover the works of Penang artists along the Butterworth Art Walk. Other attractions include the Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest, Penang Bird Park and Frog Hill (an abandoned tin mining site).

The border town of Padang Besar in Perlis has always been a popular stop for tourists wanting to cross over to Hat Yai in Thailand. But travellers who decide to explore the small town will find many cheap food and shopping.

There are many markets in Padang Besar where shoppers can get a good bargain on a range of items from Malaysia and Thailand. — Filepic

Also known as Pekan Siam, the town has a duty-free shopping complex in between the border checkpoints of the two countries. There are also many open-air markets with the popular ones being Kompleks Aked Niaga Padang Besar, Pasar Padang Besar and Gapura Square. Visitors will find goodies and food from both Malaysia and neighbouring Thailand.

Travel a little further from Padang Besar (about 20 minutes drive) to discover places such as Gua Kelam and Tasik Timah Tasoh. The journey from KL – passing through charming kampung houses, rolling hills and green paddy fields – takes about five hours.

KTM Train to Penang / Georgetown

Catching a train to Penang is a pleasant and quite relaxing way to travel to George Town on Penang Island, Malaysia, with both KTM Malaysia domestic railway connections and railway connections from the neighbouring countries of Thailand and Singapore.

ETS Train to Penang

If you are travelling from the south of Malaysia, the long distance Electric Train Service (knowa as ETS for short) is the quickest way to travel to Penang, with regular services from places like Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh.

The line currently goes as far south as Gemas, with the stretch of track between Gemas and JB Sentral in Johor Bahru currently being upgraded ( a Shuttle service currently operates this part of the route ).

See the KTM ETS schedule for northbound trains here >>

KTM Komuter Trains to Penang

If you are travelling from the north / Thailand by train, you will have to take one of the cheap and more frequent KTM Komuter (commuter) services to Butterworth.

These trains operate from the border at Padang Besar to Butterworth , with another connecting line at Bukit Mertajam for trains to Perak state (terminating at Ipoh) .

Which Station to use to get to Penang Island by Train?

The Penang train station used to get to Penang Island (Pulau Pinang) is Butterworth Railway Station , located just a few minutes walk away from the Butterworth to Penang ferry departure point , as well as the Penang Sentral bus terminal.

The ferry will take you 15 minutes to get to the old part of Georgetown, where you can then either walk in to town to find accommodation, take a taxi or catch either the free bus service that travels around the old part of the city, ending up at KOMTAR, or catch a RapidPenang bus to any other part of the city or island.

If for some reason you are not visiting the Island, then you can catch a connecting bus to anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia at the Butterworth bus station which is right in front of the train station.

Train from Thailand to Penang

If you are travelling by train to Penang from Thailand or want to travel to Thailand from Penang by train, the daily overnight sleeper train that used to travel from Penang to Bangkok , now terminates / originates from the border station at Padang Besar, with the section between Padang Besar and Butterworth Penang, now operated by KTM Komuter trains .

This service stops along the way at Hat Yai, Phattalung, Thung Song Junction, Surat Thani (for Koh Samui / Koh Phangan), Chumphon (for Koh Tao), Bang Saphan Yai, Hua Hin, Phetchaburi and a few other stops on the outskirts of Bangkok.

If you want to travel further north, you can travel from Penang to Chiang Mai by train - First, you will have to take a train to Bangkok, then you can take one of the trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

You can also catch the Komuter Train Service to Padang Besar, then you can cross over the main road/land border and catch a bus to Hat Yai bus station or city centre or take an infrequent Shuttle Train to Hat Yai .

Once at Hat Yai, there are more train services to Bangkok from here .

Train to Penang from KL, Ipoh, JB and Singapore...

Now there are no longer any of the Intercity Express Trains operating on the new dual tracks between Gemas and Padang Besar, all long-distance travel by train will now have to be done on the newer high-speed electric trains (ETS).

If you want to travel south of Gemas to places like Johor Bahru and Singapore, you will have to catch an ETS train to Gemas, then connect with a new Shuttle Train service south to JB Sentral.

Adjustability

At this level, pin-point accuracy in your setup is essential to gaining an edge on the competition. Good thing then, that the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA has that covered, with fully adjustable WP Pro Components suspension which can be fine-tuned to the likes and weights of riders and all kinds of varying terrains, as well as adjustable handlebars.

Digital Roadbook

Already compulsory at many races for the Car, SSV, and Truck categories, the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA has provisions to allow for the fitment of a digital roadbook. Not only has this new addition undergone many racing kilometers of hard testing, but it is also more accurate, more user-friendly, and brings more functionality to the racing stage. Prefer the old ways? The conventional paper roadbook system still comes in the buy-pack.

All White Plastics

READY TO RACE bikes need racing stickers. While a simple sticker graphic kit for the all-white bodywork comes in the by-pack of the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA, the plastics are left untouched for you to design your kit, with your team, sponsor, and individual needs.

FULLGAS AHEAD!

02. FULLGAS AHEAD!

Light the way

LED Headlight

A new LED headlight system is incorporated into the front mask of the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA, with an overall light output increase of 33%. Not only does this light the way to the bivouac on those longer stages, but also plays a vital role in the early morning starts and misty weather conditions.

Computing power

Engine Management System

The EMS and 44 mm throttle body are supplied by Keihin, and have proven to be the best combination for the KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA and feature rally-specific ECU mappings to the airbox, engine, and exhaust combination.

Proven powerhouse

The powerplant responsible for 10 Dakar victories is based on the hugely successful KTM SOHC 450 cc 4-stroke engine. Engineered with long, hard, and fast rally stages in mind, it features more efficient performance throughout the rev range. For 2025, it is fitted with a newly designed SOHC cylinder head, with a reinforced clutch and gearbox, and the latest electronic fuel injection. The result is unrivaled power, speed, and outstanding reliability.

Ported for power

Cylinder Head

A reworked SOHC cylinder head features newly shaped ports for further improved performance. The single overhead camshaft activates four ultra-lightweight titanium valves via extremely rigid, DLC coasted rocker arms for maximam reliability.

Stay cool under pressure

The 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA debuts a new radiator concept. Featuring two independent radiators instead of one, it dramatically improves cooling efficiency. There is also the added benefit of having a backup radiator should one get damaged.

Lightweight legend

Akrapovič Exhaust

Fitted with a rally-specific titanium Akrapovič exhaust system as standard, the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA is ready to roar - with tuning to match. It has a special hydro-formed section on the bottom for maximum ground clearance and boasts ultra-lightweight construction and unmatched performance.

CARVE THE LANDSCAPE

03. CARVE THE LANDSCAPE

Maximum stability

Triple Clamps

An all-new 23 mm offset CNC machined triple clamps with a rally-specific design ensures optimal stiffness and precise handling when charging through the desert. This, together with an in-house developed PHDS system and the proven SCOTT's steering damper, provides the confidence to keep it pinned in the faster, flowing rally stages.

Shaped to be sharper

Sharper, sleeker, and ready to take on the roughest rally stages, the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA has undergone a complete refresh. Redesigned fairings, a new tank layout, and a rally-specific seat provide improved ergonomics and seat comfort over longer distances. This means enhanced rider ergonomics, allowing for perfect control when standing by providing ample grip surfaces and freedom of movement.

Aerodynamic energy

Navigation Tower

An all-new navigation tower made of extra-light carbon fiber is well-protected behind the fairing with a new, narrower dashboard. This brings significantly improved aerodynamics, reduced turbulence, and less stress for the rider when blasting across the landscape at maximum speed. Warning lights are now also fully integrated and illuminate when the front or rear tank reserve is activated.

Long-range racer

The 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA boasts a total fuel volume of 35 liters. It has two separate 9-liter fuel tanks upfront and a self-supporting 16-liter fuel tank at the rear. These are controlled by two separate fuel pumps, which can be independently accessed and activated to supply fuel from either the front or the rear fuel tank. This works as a backup system and an additional means to monitor fuel levels.

PRECISION INSTRUMENT

04. PRECISION INSTRUMENT

The backbone

An all-new hydro-formed, laser-cut, and hand-welded frame forms the backbone of the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA. Constructed with precisely calculated parameters of longitudinal and torsional flex, the frame provides exceptional rider feedback, energy absorption, and straight-line stability - all of which are crucial for rally racing. To achieve this, the rotating mass, forged steering head connection, and most of the frame tubes have been completely re-positioned., along with the tube wall thickness, for maximum reliability and specific rigidity in high-stress areas. The frame is finished with a long-lasting and eye-catching powder coating, while the rear self-supporting 16-liter fuel tank doubles as the subframe.

Maximum traction

A new hollow, die-cast aluminum swingarm is designed for optimal stiffness and reliability at the lowest possible weight. The topology has also been optimized for optimal rigidity. This works together with a proven linkage system and fully adjustable shock absorber, which gives the rider confidence to go flat out. This also means maximum traction when accelerating and bottoming-out resistance for better stability and safety.

Dune-tuned

The 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA is fitted with the latest WP PRO COMPONENTS at both ends. In front, a 48 mm WP XACT PRO 7548 closed cartridge fork featuring sophisticated Cone Valve technology shines with outstanding damping performance. A fully adjustable WP XACT PRO 7750 shock takes care of the business in the rear. The suspension components provide full adjustability, improved damping, and higher bottoming reserves for ultimate stability.

KEEP ON THE THROTTLE

05. KEEP ON THE THROTTLE

Start easy, everytime

E-starter and Battery

A reliable electric starter and lightweight Li-Ion 4.5 Ah battery handle start procedures on the 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA. Weighing substantially less than a conventional lead battery, the Li-Ion battery delivers reliable power to the electronics, as well as enuring the convenience of easy starting particularly at low temperatures.

More trophy storage

Tool Kit Space

The 2025 KTM 450 RALLY REPLICA features a fully integrated and well-thought-out tool storage solution, with an engine cover integrated space for essential tools. This means racers can rest assured that they have what they need out in the dunes should the worst-case scenario occur while freeing up space in your bumbag.

Charging across all terrain

Black high-strength alloy rims from EXCEL are coupled to cast aluminum hubs using lightweight spokes and steel nipples for maximum stability and durability. This combination has proven to be the best solution for intense rally racing across all terrain types.

Stopping power

Brembo components guarantee total performance and reliability in braking. 300 mm front and 240 mm rear discs deliver superior stopping power, rider feel, and overall control, instilling maximum confidence in any condition.

Pulau Ketam (or Crab Island) is an island nestled off the coast of Port Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. It is renowned for its colorful houses and fresh seafood, making it a great option for a short getaway near KL.

We planned our Pulau Ketam trip just 3 days in advance, and it ended up being a pleasant weekend getaway.

In this post, I’m going to review my Pulau Ketam day trip with information about the ferry price, its famous food, what to do in Pulau Ketam, and more.

16 Awesome places for a weekend getaway in Selangor

Why is the island called “Pulau Ketam”?

I thought there must be a reason behind the name Pulau Ketam (which means ‘Crab Island’). Therefore, I tried to find the answer on Google, but there was no information available in English. So, during my Pulau Ketam day trip, I decided to observe, and what I saw were crabs, crabs, and more crabs.

When I first arrived at Pulau Ketam Port, the first thing I noticed were mud crabs – thousands of them living in the mud.

Additionally, Pulau Ketam is renowned for its chili crab dish. It’s also interesting that the seafood restaurants place a basket of crabs in front of their seafood restaurants, perhaps to let people know that they sell crabs and indicate how many crabs are available for the day.

Furthermore, I noticed that the locals even painted crabs on the roads and carved or built crab statues on the roofs of Chinese temples and shrines.

Bicycles are the main means of transport in Pulau Ketam

As the narrow road, the locals can only use bicycles or electric bicycles to travel around the island. If you wish to experience riding a bike around Pulau Ketam, there are many rental shops near the Pulau Ketam Port.

The majority of the population in Pulau Ketam is Chinese

The Crab Island was founded in the 1870s by a group of fishermen from Hainan, China. Over the years, they have built more than 1,000 wooden houses, forming a community of about 8,000 residents on the island today.

To get to Pulau Ketam from KL, you need to travel from KL to Port Klang and then take a ferry to Pulau Ketam.

From KL to Port Klang

By public transportation

  • KTM: From KL Sentral station, you can take a KTM Train to Port Klang (the last station). It costs only 6.40RM/adult and 3.2RM/child and takes 1 hour and 25 minutes. KTM tickets can be bought at the ticket vending machine at KL Sentral station.
  • Bus: Alternatively, you can take Bus 701 to Port Klang and disembark at Kawasan 6 Klang. This bus station is just a 4-minute walk from Port Klang.

Driving from KL to Port Klang takes around 50-60 minutes.

Parking is available right in front of Port Klang. Remember not to park on the road, as it’s illegal and you’ll likely be fined…that’s from my experience…Yup, lesson learned.

If you don’t drive and are not confident to travel around by public transportation, then an easy option for you is to join a tour. You can consider this tour: Pulau Ketam Crab Village Rural Adventure Tour which has received quite good reviews from previous customers.

Here is some information about the tour:

  • Link to book tour: Click here (enter code DL6KGF to get RM 20 off )
  • Inclusion: Round-trip transfers to and from your hotel (in Kuala Lumpur), English-speaking guide, tour at Crab Village Pulau Ketam, simple local lunch, round-trip ferry ticket.
  • Duration: from 9:00 to 17:00

From Port Klang to Pulau Ketam

From Port Klang, you just need to take a ferry to get to Pulau Ketam. The ferry takes around 45 minutes and the ferry schedule is quite frequent.

On my Pulau Ketam trip, I took the Alibaba ferry. The boat is pretty clean and comfortable to sit in.

Where to buy the ferry ticket to Pulau Ketam?

You can buy it at Port Klang (Terminal Penumpang South Port) or buy it online via This link .

We arrived the Port Klang at 10 AM. There was a lady selling ferry tickets approaching us, so we bought directly from her. I saw a ticket counter at the port as well and the price is the same.

  • The seller only accepts cash or TNG wallet.
  • If you travel on weekends, it’s advisable to buy tickets online in advance. Buy Alibaba ferry tickets online via this link and enter code DL6KGF to get RM 20 off.

How much is the Pulau Ketam ferry price?

The ticket price for a return trip from Port Klang to Pulau Ketam is RM 20 for adults and RM 12 for children

For a one-way trip, it costs RM 12 for adults and RM 6 for children.

  • This is the price for Alibaba Ferry.
  • The schedule is printed on the ticket. However, it’s not very accurate. When we bought the ticket, the seller said there would be a ferry back to the mainland at 1:30 PM, 3:30 PM, and 5:30 PM and marked it on the ticket for us. Thus, we tried to catch the ferry at 3:30 PM, but it was 35 minutes late. We had to stand and queue up at the port for nearly an hour.
  • There are two villages in Pulau Ketam: Sugai Lima and Pulau Ketam village. The ferry will make one stop at Sugai Lima first, and then proceed to Pulau Ketam. Therefore, ensure that you get off at the correct stop.

Speed boat from Port Klang to Pulau Ketam

Besides the ferry, there is another way to reach Pulau Ketam from Port Klang, which is by speed boat. This is a charter service, which means you can rent the entire boat.

Sometimes, they also offer sharing tickets for walk-in customers. The speed boat ticket costs RM 10 for adults and RM 5 for children, and the journey takes about 20 minutes.

But bear in mind that the schedule is not fixed; the boat only departs when there are enough customers.

Therefore, unless you rent the whole boat, it’s recommended to travel from Port Klang to Pulau Ketam by ferry.

💡 Read my review of other places for a short trip from KL:

  • Kuala Selangor – experience Sky mirror, Blue Tears, Fireflies & Eagle feeding
  • Sekinchan – take pictures with the lush green paddy field
  • Selangor Fruit Valley – Enjoy fruit plucking activities & try seasonal fruits

Here below are the best things to do on your Pulau Ketam day trip.

Try local foods

I realized some famous local foods offered everywhere in Pulau Ketam which are prawn fritters, shrimp balls, fried oyster omelette, Lala omelette, etc.

Personally, I like the prawn fritters the most and their price is very cheap, only 2RM/ piece.

Wander around the village

When coming to Pulau Ketam, I feel like it is Venice of Malaysia with colorful houses and turquoise waters (to be honest, I edited the picture so the color looks more saturated, but it’s also very pretty in real life). Therefore, it’s a good idea to wander around the village to observe the local life and snap some dazzling photos.

As the main tourist attractions are within walking distance, we can roam around Pulau Ketam village on foot.

Pulau-ketam-day-trip-ferry-price

Indulge in fresh seafood

What you must do when visiting a fishing village is to eat seafood. Pulau Ketam is especially famous for its crab. Interestingly, you can see a crab basket in front of each seafood restaurant to “show off” how many crabs are left for that day.

However, bear in mind that crabs are mostly sold out during the day. If you stay overnight in Pulau Ketam, expect that it’s quite hard to find crabs during nighttime.

I had lunch at Restaurant Kim Hoe. Personally, I felt like the crab was not so fresh, but the steamed fish and prawns were sweet and tasty. Overall, my rating is 3.5/5. If you want to try crab, I don’t recommend this restaurant.

seafood-pulau-ketam

Ride a bike around the village

This is my favorite thing to do in Pulau Ketam because it’s fun and allows me to explore farther areas of the island. As bicycles are the most common means of transport on Crab Island, numerous shops offer rental services for both manual and electric bikes.

We rented an electric bike at Sealion Hotel @Pulau Ketam for 20RM/hour. A deposit of 10RM is required. Payment can be by cash or TNG wallet. After payment, the shop owner will give you a receipt, keep this receipt till you finish the journey to get back the deposit.

Visit the Snake Temple

As the majority of the population in Pulau Ketam is Chinese, you will find several Chinese temples around the village, and the most famous one is probably the Snake Temple.

There is a real living giant snake encased in a cage just on the right of the temple. I guess that’s why it’s named Snake Temple.

snake-temple-pulau-ketam-things-to-do

Stroll around the local market

The best way to see the daily life of the locals is to visit the local market. This is probably the busiest area in Pulau Ketam with a lot of restaurants (both halal and non-halal) and local shops where you can buy souvenirs. If you are looking for a place to have lunch, this is the place to go.

Check out Sugai Lima Village

If you visit Pulau Ketam for 2 days, you can also explore the neighboring village of Sugai Lima. Some tourist attractions in Sugai Lima Village include a fish farm, mural arts, Hock Leng Keng Temple, and eagle-watching activities. Fresh seafood is also available in this village.

Note : Transportation between Pulau Ketam Village and Sugai Lima Village is by ferry or speed boat.

To be honest, the village is quite small and there are not many things to do in Pulau Ketam. Therefore, a day trip is enough to explore the village, unless you want to explore Sugai Lima as well.

Here below is the itinerary for my Pulau Ketam day trip:

10:00 AM: Arrived at Port Klang to buy the ferry ticket. The ferry departed at 10:30 AM.

11:15 AM: Arrived at Pulau Ketam Port.

Note: The ferry stopped at Sugai Lima Port before reaching Pulau Ketam. And there was no announcement at all. Thus, check with the staff or look at the port’s name to confirm that you are at the right port.

After arrival, I walked around the village, had some local snacks, and visited some Chinese temples.

12:30 PM: Had lunch at Restaurant Kim Hoe. Our lunch costed 298RM/ 5 people.

2:00 PM: Rented an electric bike to discover a farther part of Pulau Ketam.

2:30 PM: Had fun at KTV.

3:25 PM: Headed back to Pulau Ketam Port. The ferry came at 4:05 PM.

5:10 PM: Reached Port Klang.

In conclusion, my Pulau Ketam day trip took about 9 hours, including transportation between KL and Port Klang. I believe it’s a perfect schedule, not too rushed and not too boring. I got enough time to visit all the tourist attractions in Pulau Ketam and explore farther areas using an electric bike.
