The best travel stair gate

Best Travel Stair Gate 2023

When travelling with your children , you still want to make sure they are safe and that is why finding the best travel stair gate is so important. You don’t want your child falling down stairs or getting into rooms that might be dangerous such as the kitchen or bathroom when you are away on holiday or visiting family. The best travel stair is definitely out there for 2023.

Travel stair gates come in two different types: either safety barriers that can be configured however you need them to block doorways or make into playpens, or push fit safety gates that can be fitted across a doorway or stair way. Both versions can easily be used in your own house and so make a good investment. Read on to find out our suggestions and find gates that are available in the UK.

If you want to look at all types of stair gates then head over to our child safety gate guide .

Safety Barrier Stair Gates/ Room Dividers

A safety barrier travel stair gate is a useful option if you have an awkward room layout, open plan rooms, or a fireplace that you want to make safe. They are made up of a number of barriers that can be placed in different configurations depending on what your needs are. They can also be used as a travel playpen so you can keep your baby or toddler safe while you go to the bathroom or make some food.

Safetots Wooden Multi Panel Safety Barrier

travel safety barrier

This safety barrier from Safetots is a great multi-use option that you can take with you as a travel stair gate. The barrier consists of 5 panels, one of which is a gate making it even more flexible. The barrier can be used as a room divided, gate for doors or stairs and a fireguard depending on what you need.

The travel barrier is made from premium wood so will last well and offer good resale value. Each of the panels can be angled discreetly so will be able to fit most room layouts- a must for travelling. The door section is wide for easy access and has a two-step opening mechanism for extra safety.

Some reviews from Amazon:

“Overall I am really happy with the feel and look of this and I hope to get some years use from it.”

Pressure Fit Travel Stair Gates

Pressure fit stair gates are a good option to take with you when going on holiday. They are less versatile than the barrier safety gates but are smaller being only a gate so are easier to take with you. Because of their method of attachment which doesn’t require tools, they are easy to move from your home to a different house. The pressure fit element gives some flexibility so should fit a variety of different door sizes.

Below are some of the best ones available in 2023 that are also easy to take with you as a travel stair gate.

Lindam by Munchkin Sure Shut Pressure Fit Safety Gate

The Lindam Sure Shut Axis Pressure Fit Safety Gate is a really affordable option for a travel stair gate. The pressure fit mechanism on the stair gate makes it an ideal choice for travelling and can be used at home as well.

Lindam Sure Shut Axis Pressure Fit Safety Gate

These safety gates make use of pressure and wall pads to fit snugly in doorways or narrow hallways, with no need to screw into the wall or doorframe, they can be taken with you when stopping at relatives or going on holiday. Each gate comes with full instructions to help you reposition the gate when needed and you can find a how to video (linked below) to make the task even more straightforward.

Since this type of stair gate has a supportive U-shaped frame for stability, you should never install it at the top of a stairway as the bottom bar might pose a trip hazard . The quick, one-handed release makes it suitable for busy areas as it only takes a quick press on the release button to open the gate. You can also set the gate to either swing both ways or to only open one way- useful for the bottom on the stairs.

Lindam Sure Shut Axis Pressure Fit Safety Gate Lock

The child safety gate is made of strong steel and fits standard gate fits openings of 76-82 cm with the option of extending it to 117 cm with the optional extensions that come in various sizes so should be perfect for all manor of doorways and openings.

BabyDan Pressure Fit Stair Gate- wide fitting

If you know you need a wider fitting safety gate to take with you on your travels, this one from BabyDan is a really good option. The travel gate is wider than standard models and can be adjusted from 79.5 to 93.3 cm to fit into wider doorways or hallways.

travel safety barrier

Like all pressure fit stair gates, it can be fitted straight from the box with no need for any extra tools or fittings to complete the job. Just remove it easily from wherever you have it in your house and pack it into the car. The baby gate has easy one handed opening and can be fixed to open one way or two way depending on your needs.

This video from the Danish makers BabyDan shows the testing that their products undertake before being sold to parents.

Here’s some reviews from Amazon customers to help you decide:

“Easy to install , solid materials and easy to use , worth to buy”

“Once fitted, to stop our baby grandson entering, the kitchen it felt very secure. It has been in place about 4 months and works well. “

“Does not budge. Gave us peace of mind knowing our little one cannot get up or down the stairs.”

Stair railing safety net for toddlers

Child safety net for stair bannisters

So this product obviously isn’t a safety gate, but it is something that will come in really useful when you’re staying in a different house. It’s also really portable so a good purchase for those ‘just in case’ occasions. Basically the net can be used to make gaps between railings safe for your baby or toddler.

In some houses (particularly older ones built before more stringent building control), the gaps between stair rods will be wide enough for a baby or toddler to fall through. This could lead to an awful accident if your child happens to slip through when not closely attended. A good solution is to buy this mesh net which can be fixed using ties to the banisters. The mesh is strong enough to stop your child from falling through the gaps.

Customers on Amazon have said:

” This product is easy to fit and covers the landing banister struts easily. It is a bit long but double it up and it still works. “

” Pretty sturdy for a net, exactly what we needed to keep our little one from falling through the banisters. It comes with strings and cable ties and is a good size “

Why do you need a travel stair gate?

Even if you don’t use safety gates when you’re at home, there are still lots of good reasons to invest in a travel stair gate, especially if you’re away from home with your mobile baby or toddler quite often.

Even going to visit friends or family could pose problems if you’re not able to stop access to certain rooms such as the bathroom or kitchen. If you’re child is still in a cot at home but will be sleeping in a bed when you travel then you need to consider getting a travel stair gate so they can’t go wandering out of their room overnight.

If you’re staying in a holiday cottage or villa, you can’t be sure of knowing what the layout is or how safe rooms will be. To give you peace of mind, a travel stair gate will fit easily into a suitcase and should block off access to most dangers.

As the safety gate can be easily moved, you can have it blocking the kitchen during the day and then switch it to their room for overnight.

Best Travel Stair Gate Round-Up

Even when travelling you have no excuse not to have a baby gate with you. Pick the best travel stair gate for your needs- whether you want a barrier so you can use it as a playpen or fireguard as well as a stair gate or if you need a pressure fit safety gate to fit stairs or doorways.

Packing a stair safety net is also a good option- really light and small to fit in your luggage but gives you a number of options in keeping your baby or toddler safe if banisters or balcony spindles are wider spaced than you would be comfortable with.

Lindam Flexi Gate review

travel safety barrier

  • Sarah Barker

In a nutshell

This lightweight, folding stair barrier is great for holidays, but in a more permanent setting you may want to look for something sturdier and that can open easily

What we tested

  • Lightweight, folds easily, easy to erect, no tools required, comes in a storage bag for travel
  • Gate doesn't actually open – it's a barrier, dark grey colour stands out, not as sturdy as a regular safety gate

Showing item 1 of 2

travel safety barrier

A portable and lightweight safety barrier, the Lindam Flexi Gate fits most openings and comes in its own carry bag, making it ideal for travel.

For over 20 years, Lindam, a family run business based in Yorkshire, has been making baby products. Nowadays, Lindam works with companies throughout the world. The Lindam range includes baby monitors , bouncers, that easy-to-recognise curved bottle, a cot, breast pump, food warmer, sterilizers and safety products and gates. Lindam has about 10 or so safety gates in the range, from metal to wooden, easy fit to extendable. I tried the Flexi Gate. This is a collapsible gate – it ‘twists and folds’ into it’s own carry bag. It’s lightweight metal frame, and can fit gaps 71cm to 92cm.

First of all Jack and I tried the Lindam Flexi Gate at the top of the stairs in our fairly standard family house, and it gave me a feeling of fear and Jack a feeling of freedom as he pressed his not insubstantial body against the fabric in the middle – eek! But in a doorway where no stairs are involved we were confident baby Jack was contained. It's also, ahem, stretching the truth to call it a ‘gate’ as it doesn't actually open when in place. To walk through you have to loosen the pressure pads and virtually remove the gate.

What we love

The Lindam Flexi Gate is lightweight and extremely portable, and is great value for money. It’s extremely easy to fit as it is pressure mounted. The gate collapses, twists and folds into a bag the size of a small tent. This mechanism is really neat.

It’s easily adjustable to a range of widths, which is yet another thing that makes it good for travel, as you don’t know the size of doorways where you’re going (unless you really are super organised!).

What to watch out for

This is not a gate, it's a barrier, so don't try and rush through in a hurry. It's not as robust as metal or wooden safety gates, and because it's pressure mounted it needs to be constantly checked to ensure it’s still secure.

Colour-wise it's not the best either as it's grey, which really does make it stand out and would not suit many homes.

Who is the Lindam Flexi Gate best for?

Mobile mums and dads who need a portable safety barrier for holidays.

MadeForMums verdict

The Lindam Flexi Gate is easy to fit and easy to pack away. It’s portable and a useful addition to your holiday equipment. However, it’s not necessarily what you'd want in place in a more permanent setting.

The 3 Biggest Barriers to Travel and How to Solve Them

M ost people don't get to travel as much as they want. Only 17% of travelers said they went on as many trips as they wanted last year, according to The State of Travel 2024 by Going.

Going also asked travelers about the reasons they weren't able to travel as much as they wanted. They overwhelmingly mentioned three specific barriers to travel.

1. Not enough time off from work or school

The most common barrier to travel is a lack of time off. Nearly one-third (30%) of travelers said this was their issue in 2023. A similar amount (29%) expect it to keep them from traveling in 2024.

When you work or go to school full-time, you might feel like you can't take time off. But everyone needs time away from the responsibilities of daily life. Travel is a great way to do that and enjoy yourself in the process.

How to make time for travel: You can probably create more travel time than you think in 2024. Here are some ideas to make it happen.

Featured offer: save money while you pay off debt with one of these top-rated balance transfer credit cards

  • Plan a trip and request time off now. If you don't make firm travel plans for this year, you're more likely to postpone them until 2025, 2026, and beyond. When you commit to a trip by getting time off from work and making reservations, you're far more likely to go through with it.
  • See if you can work remotely. Even if your employer doesn't let you work remotely full-time, you could ask to do it for a week or two. Then, you can continue working while you travel.
  • Take shorter trips. Not every travel experience needs to involve an eight-hour flight. Check out places closer to home that you can visit over the weekend.

2. Lack of money

A lack of money is also a common issue, with 28% saying it was their barrier to travel in 2023. And 25% expect it to be an issue in 2024.

Travel can certainly be expensive. Flights and hotels can cost thousands of dollars, and you'll also be spending on food and activities wherever you go. On the bright side, there are plenty of ways to travel without running up balances on your credit cards .

How to have the money to travel: If you feel like you don't have enough money to travel like you want, here's what you can do.

  • Set up a travel fund and add to it every month. If you love to travel, why not make it one of your savings goals? Open a savings account to serve as your travel fund. Many banks let you set up sub-savings accounts, so you could also see if your current account gives you this option. Make sure to use a high-yield savings account to earn as much interest as possible.
  • Start using travel credit cards to pay your bills. These cards have lots of travel perks, including points that you can redeem for travel expenses. Many of them also have big sign-up bonuses that you earn by meeting a spend requirement, such as $3,000 in the first three months. Some sign-up bonuses can save you $500 or more on travel.
  • Master budget-friendly ways to travel. Travel doesn't need to cost a ton of money. You can do it for less if you shop around for deals on flights and accommodations, visit affordable destinations , and look for free or low-cost activities when you travel.

3. Family and other commitments

It wasn't mentioned as often, but 16% of travelers said family and other commitments were their barrier to travel in 2023. Even more (20%) expect it to be a barrier to travel in 2024.

Spending time with family and friends is always nice, but it can make traveling more difficult. Even when you have the time off to travel, you may feel pressured to spend it with loved ones, especially if it's around the holidays or a special occasion.

How to fit in travel plans with family and other commitments: This is undoubtedly the hardest issue to solve. I've wrestled with it myself. It's difficult to spend as much time as you want with family and friends while also seeing the world. Fortunately, there are ways to make it work.

  • Invite your loved ones on a group trip. A group trip can be the perfect way to get the best of both worlds. You can travel and spend time with the people you love. If you want to do this, get started early. It takes much more time and planning to set up a group trip, but it can be well worth it.
  • Figure out a balance between travel and your other commitments. For example, you could choose to do one trip for yourself and one family get-together a year, with smaller trips in between.
  • Stay connected no matter where you are. Even if you travel more and don't see your loved ones as much, you can still keep in touch. Regular texts, phone calls, and video chats are all easy ways to stay connected. It's not the same as being in the same room as someone, but it helps.

If you want to travel more in 2024, don't let any of those issues stop you. Whether it's lack of time off, lack of money, or family commitments, some solutions will allow you to travel as much as you want.

Cable Median Barrier

Cable median barrier consists of steel wire ropes mounted on posts. It is designed to prevent a vehicle from leaving the road and striking an object which would create a potentially more dangerous situation. It functions by capturing or redirecting vehicles while absorbing impact energy.

Cable median barrier is saving lives every day and is expected to reduce cross-median crashes by an estimated 90 percent.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

travel safety barrier

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit in 2024? | Safety Advice & Expert Tips

Amazing Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a bucket list destination for many people. The Moscow Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral are two of the most iconic sights in the world.

However, it would be a mistake to think Moscow is limited just to those two sights. Moscow is a city of amazing culture, which you can take in at the iconic Bolshoi Theatre or some of the city’s many bookstores.

Learn more about the city’s communist history at Red Square and Lenin’s tomb. When you need a break from it all, Moscow will surprise you with its many parks, including the popular Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure.

There are so many things to see in Moscow that you would need a lifetime to truly get to know this sprawling metropolis.

However, before visiting a new place, it is always a good idea to research more practical concerns such as safety in addition to which sights you should see. But don’t worry — our travel experts did the hard work for you. Let us be your guide!

Is Moscow Safe to Visit in 2024?

Downtown skyline of Moscow pictured for a guide titled is Moscow safe to visit with empty streets leading to the tall buildings

Dmitry Polonskiy/Shutterstock

Right now, Moscow is not safe to visit due to the ongoing war with Ukraine. The political situation is tenuous, and there have been situations of the government targeting foreign citizens.

Although Moscow has a low crime rate, that doesn’t mean the city is safe as long as the political situation is the way that it is. Most foreign governments tell their citizens to avoid all parts of Russia right now, including Moscow.

For example, the United States tells its citizens not to travel to any parts of Russia, putting the country under a Level Four travel advisory .

This warning is echoed by other countries such as Australia and Canada. The main reason these countries cite for telling people not to go to Moscow is the war with Ukraine.

After years of a low-scale conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 . Most observers think the Russians planned to take over Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine quickly, but the war has been going on for over a year now with no signs of stopping.

Although most of the fighting is occurring in Ukraine, with just a few bombing forays in Russian border regions far away from Moscow, the war has impacted the situation in the Russian capital as well.

Foreign sanctions mean that there are shortages in the capital and foreign banks and cards don’t work. In response to the sluggish war effort, the Russian government has become more repressive.

Men were conscripted, often against their will. The government responded violently  to protesters against the war, and some people have been charged with treason for criticizing the war. Freedom of speech was already declining in Russia, and the war is just making that even worse.

It is a mistake to think that as a foreigner you would be free from the growing repression due to the war. If there is any possibility you might be seen as having Russian citizenship, you might be forcibly mobilized.

Since the war, the Russian government has detained several foreign citizens in a transparent ploy to use them as leverage with Western governments, such as the American basketball player Brittney Griner  and the American journalist Evan Gershkovich.

Besides the threat of war and repression, Moscow has a moderate crime rate that has been increasing since the war.

Common crimes include:

  • Pickpocketing
  • Bag snatching
  • Armed robbery

The city has also seen several terrorist attacks recently that took many lives.

Crime in Moscow

Compared to other big cities and the rest of Russia, Moscow’s crime rate is actually not that bad. While crime does occur, it is frequently petty in nature and not often violent.

English-language crime statistics for Moscow are not always easy to find, but once you do locate them, they are promising. As of 2017 , the Moscow Oblast had an intentional homicide rate of 6.9 incidents per 100,000 people.

Although this is slightly higher than the national average, most of these homicides occurred in the other cities that make up the Oblast while the city of Moscow itself has a much lower homicide rate.

In 2021, Moscow had over 143,000 total crimes recorded. Although this is the highest number in Russia, that makes sense because Moscow is also the most populous city in Moscow.

Most of these crimes were incidents of theft or other property crimes, not violent crimes. Most people living in Moscow feel relatively safe. According to Numbeo, the level of crime in Moscow scores a 35.68 out of 100 on the crime index, which is low.

The only crimes for which people reported moderate levels were minor property crimes such as vandalism and theft (although most people are concerned about corruption and bribery).

The feeling of safety is backed up by expat blogs that say Moscow feels very safe although it is a massive city. However, the war in Ukraine looks as if it is changing the feeling of safety in Moscow as well.

News reports say that the rate of armed violence has increased all over Russia, including Moscow. Moscow saw a whopping 203% increase  in crimes involving weapons in 2022. Although the overall crime rate took a dip, the violent crime rate increased.

There are a few reasons why people think violent crime in Moscow has increased. The war in Ukraine means that there are more weapons floating around, making it easier for someone who wants an illegal weapon to obtain one.

There have also been violent attacks against government facilities such as military recruitment offices, although most of these attacks are happening outside of Moscow.

This is showing that people are getting restive with the war in Ukraine and the general situation in the country. The situation in the country is allowing criminals to act with more impunity, such as the attempted kidnapping in broad daylight of a Moscow businessman.

Although Moscow’s crime statistics used to be good, most of those statistics were gathered before the war. As the war continues to destabilize Russian society, the crime situation in Moscow will become even more unpredictable.

Petty Theft

In most previous years, petty theft was the primary concern for visitors to Moscow. The capital city was plagued by gangs of pickpockets and thieves, often groups of children and teenagers.

These thieves would often target tourists because they saw them as easy, lucrative targets. Places frequented by foreigners were and still are common targets for pickpockets.

The Australian government lists several hotspots for crime in its travel advisory, including popular tourist sites such as Red Square, markets such as Izmailovsky Market, and the metro.

Others warn tourists that even Moscow’s airport is a popular location for thieves, with many travelers being relieved of their passports before they even step into Moscow itself. Anywhere where there are crowds, keep an eye out for potential pickpockets.

Keep your valuables close to your body by placing them in a front pocket, money belt, or zipped travel bag. Storing valuables such as phones and wallets in backpacks or tote bags is unsafe as those are easily accessible to thieves.

Scams are also very common in Moscow. Some scammers draw their victims in before they even arrive in Russia through online dating services.

Beware of any overly friendly acquaintance that you meet online and that immediately asks for money. Common in-person scams include someone posing as a police officer and robbing you.

Police checks in Moscow are common, but always ask to see an ID before complying with anyone’s search request. Beware of any other distraction tactics thieves may use.

One common tactic popular with Moscow’s pickpocket gangs was the wallet scam, when thieves would drop a wallet in a public place. When an unsuspecting tourist would try to return it, they would accuse the tourist of stealing it and demand money.

Taxi cabs are also common perpetrators of scams.

The UK government  warns that unlicensed taxis sometimes look exactly like official taxis but end up robbing their passengers. The best way to stay safe when taking taxis is to ask your hotel to book a taxi for you or to use a ride-hailing app.

Violent crimes have also affected tourists in Moscow. Unfortunately, assault is one of the most common. The Canadian government warns its citizens about the possibility of racially motivated assault in all of Russia, including Moscow.

Amnesty International produced a report about the troubling prevalence of hate crimes in Russia, collecting incidents such as the 2003 suspected arson of a university that hosted many foreign students.

If you or a traveling companion are of African or Asian descent, you will be at elevated risk of assault in Moscow. Another common form of assault in Moscow is drink spiking.

Be careful when going out to bars and clubs, especially if you are a woman. There have been situations where criminals spike people’s drinks then rob them or even sexually assault them before leaving them outside in the Moscow cold.

Avoiding Bad Areas

Khelena5977/Shutterstock

There are a few neighborhoods in Moscow that tourists should probably avoid. Solntsevo is a neighborhood that has a reputation for lots of organized crime, so it’s better to stay away.

Other districts that have higher rates of crime are Maryino, Perovo, and Golyanovo Districts. Most of these districts are far away from the center so you probably won’t wander over by accident.

You should also avoid Garage Valley, a massive slum right near Moscow State University, and Bitsevski Park, which was home to a very prolific serial killer. Komsomolskaya Square, in front of one of the city’s train stations, is a hub for mostly low-level crime such as prostitution.

There are a few areas in Moscow that are safe during the day but should be avoided at night, such as the city’s many underpasses which are frequent haunts for robbers after dark.

Things to Consider

Here are a few other safety tips to keep in mind if you do go to Moscow:

  • Drugs are highly illegal and the penalties for usage are strict. Drug raids often target foreigners, so make sure that all your activities are above board.
  • Ever since the 2013 “anti-gay propaganda” law limiting freedom of expression for LGBT individuals, Russia has gotten more homophobic. Although Moscow is the most gay-friendly place in Russia, official discrimination and violence by street vigilantes is still common.
  • Terrorist attacks in Moscow happen with some frequency, so keep an eye out when you are in public places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Baturina Yuliya/Shutterstock

Here are some other questions you may want to know the answers to before going to Moscow:

Is it safe to go to Moscow now?

As of 2023, it is not safe to go to Moscow and it will not be safe until after Russia’s war with Ukraine is over. The risk of arbitrary detention and state repression is too high.

Is it safe at night in Moscow?

Moscow has a busy nightlife, so as long as you are walking in busy streets, you should be fine. However, you shouldn’t walk alone at night, especially in quiet streets where there are few passersby to help you.

Can I travel to Moscow as a tourist?

It is very difficult to travel to Moscow as a tourist now. Most major airlines suspended their flights and many governments stopped diplomatic relations due to the war in Ukraine, making it difficult if not impossible to get a visa.

Are tourists still going to Russia?

There are some tourists still going to Russia, mostly from countries that maintained diplomatic relationships with the country. However, the numbers have declined steeply following the war in Ukraine.

Is Moscow an expensive city?

If you do go to Moscow, be prepared to take a hit to your budget. Moscow is a very expensive city, the world’s most expensive according to some metrics. Sanctions have now made it harder to obtain certain goods, driving up their price.

So, Should You Travel to Moscow?

Moscow is a beautiful city, but it’s probably better that you save your visit for after the war in Ukraine. Right now, the risk of state repression and arbitrary detention for foreign citizens is too high, and crime is rising due to blowback from the war.

However, there are thousands of other safe places to travel in 2024, and you can bet that we’ve created guides to the majority of them. Check out our favorite places to travel today!

Changes coming to fish barrier work zones on US 12 in Grays Harbor County

  • Olympic Region , communications, 3603572600

Bridge construction between Montesano and Elma nears halfway mark

MONTESANO – People who travel on US 12 between Montesano and Elma will start using two new bridges the week of April 29. The bridges are part of a fish barrier removal project that corrects five culverts under US 12 and State Route 8 in Grays Harbor County.

What to expect

On Wednesday, May 1, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will move one lane of US 12 onto the new bridges. Travelers will see daytime rolling slowdowns on US 12 during this work. The bridges are located near Monte-Brady Road and Schouweiler Road. Work is weather dependent and subject to change. WSDOT encourages people to stay alert in work zones as work continues.

Upcoming temporary changes to US 12, SR 8

Throughout spring and summer, travelers will see more changes in work zones on both highways. Crews will slow traffic down at times to reconfigure lanes and set up new work zones. Travelers will continue to cross over the median from one side of the highway to the other at all five locations.

The temporary changes will remain until all bridge structures are complete. To keep people moving around the work zones, one lane in each direction will remain open. The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2025.

The work will allow fish at all stages of life to cross under the highways to access spawning and rearing habitat as well as improve highway resilience for people.

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Nizhny Novgorod
  • Novosibirsk
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

9 Reviews on Moscow

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

Metro declares public safety emergency, will install enhanced bus driver barriers

KABC logo

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Following the death of woman on the Metro B Line and a series of violent attacks on bus drivers, the transit agency's Board of Directors declared a public safety emergency Thursday while agreeing to procure new safety barriers for bus drivers and taking other steps to enhance safety on the system.

Metro's Board of Directors unanimously adopted a recommendation to acquire new barriers for hundreds of buses, in response to a "sudden, unexpected increased severity of assaults on operators." According to Metro, assaults on bus operators increased from 92 attacks in 2019 to 160 in 2023, and they continue to escalate this year.

Metro board member and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger also introduced a motion, co-authored by several of her colleagues, to quickly explore solutions to bolster public safety, prompted by the death of 66-year- old Mirna Soza Arauz, who was stabbed in an apparently unprovoked attack earlier this week.

"Metro riders deserve to be safe on the system, and we will continue to do all that," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who chairs the Board of Directors, said during Thursday's meeting. "We can keep not only our riders, but also our operators, safe, and I know that as a board, we will step up to this challenge because that's what frankly the people of Los Angeles deserve."

Barger said her motion calls for the agency to secure station gate entrances and exits, analyze data on violent crimes -- including those by reoffenders -- occurring on the system, and speed up pilot solutions at some of the most "challenging" stations. The motion was co-authored by Supervisors Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis, as well as L.A. City Council President Paul Krekorian, Inglewood Mayor James Butts and Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian.

Among other measures the Board of Directors called for were quickly increasing security cameras, implementing facial recognition technology, and using other technology. The agency may also look into ways of banning problematic individuals from Metro altogether.

"We have received reports highlighting improvements since last year on crime stats and over other key areas," Barger said. "But the reality is that we are fighting a battle with one hand tied behind our back."

At one point, Barger said she didn't feel safe riding Metro by herself.

"I hate to say it, I will not ride our transit system by myself," Barger said.

While there was overall agreement to explore as many options as possible to improve Metro's safety, there was disagreement as to how to best get there.

Supervisor Lindsey Horvath was critical of Metro's policing contracts with the Los Angeles Police Department, Long Beach Police Department and L.A. County Sheriff's Department. She suggested that the agencies have not been forthcoming about how they've improved their approach to deploying their officers across the transit system.

Butts said he was a proponent of implementing more security technology across the system.

Supervisor Holly Mitchell said the agency needs to keep the broader context in mind while discussing public safety and not commit to "knee jerk reactions."

The Board of Directors is expected to hear more about potential public safety measures within 60 days.
