Top 5 airlines flying to Canada

Overall excellent but the Captain kept the seat belt sign on for far too long, especially at the beginning and end of the flight. It was 2 hours after take-off before the crew were able to start the service (on an 11 hour night flight, reducing our sleeping time) and the seat belt sign on went on during breakfast (90 mins before landing) and was not turned off again until we landed. This made for an uncomfortable journey of trying to limit fluid intake because it was unclear when the toilets would be available for use.

Food was not good. We asked for Muslim food and it was weird tasteless type of boiled veges.

Couldn’t request a vegan meal somehow but I noticed other people getting them

They announced food service but then never came around. We also couldn’t land so kept trying to get to runway and then had to come up and go around happened like 3 times and cause the child next to me to start throwing up

Flight was canceled due to technical issue shortly before the check-in counters opened. Passengers were rebooked on a flight three days later. Request to be accommodated on Air Tahiti Nui could not be processed. Customer service sorted out the refund after calling and being put on hold for almost an hour.

Carring crew, nice ambiance of the cabin, comfortable beds, good food well served. We liked everything.

The pilot tried to make up for lost time due to delays that were out of her control. She communicated the issues openly and clearly and made every effort to do what she could to alleviate issues.

Just a hiccup being added to the NZ Traveller Declaration a bit late.

Boarding instructions on one leg of my journey were not well communicated at the gate (Melbourne to Auckland)

Better connections, much better cabin crew, much cleaner cabin that Qantas, American and probably other carriers.

Better connections, much better cabin crews, much cleaner aircraft than Qantas, American and probably others.

Fiji left without me because American Airlines was too stupid to get to LAX on time. Fiji should have offered a standby on another flight but they told me tough luck. I will never fly with this company again.

The A350 aircraft business class experience was very good. Comfortable and well appointed pod, and supplemental bed pad available for sleeping. Food was very good.

Business class seats and amenities were excellent, crew very attentive. Slept well. Food good, lounge experience nice. Would fly them again. A350 aircraft excellent, very quiet.

The flight attendants were extremely friendly and helpful. Everything ran on time. I highly recommend Fiji Airways.

The experience was lovely in every respect. The crews were delightful.

Very clean aircraft. Friendly staff. New plane. Food quality was good. Not my flavor but I saw the effort.

Fiji Business Class was value for money. Would do again for a long haul flight.

1.5Hrs to get from plane into terminal. Long wait. Flight to NZ 1 he late

The staff we fantastic and seemed to work very well with each other

Business lounge in Melbourne mediocre. Look at Emirates or Qatar, Qantas! Great friendly crew. Food was good but Emirates is a level above. Business seat good. But can’t compare to Qatar. Main reason for booking Qantas is loyalty and terrific connection via Perth to LHR.

I was pleasantly surprised with my flight to LA with Qantas. Although seats were not the roomies, service was excellent.

The service and smooth landing. Food was delicious and the staff was friendly. We arrived earlier than scheduled.

Wonderful crew, good food. Absolutely loved the wine spritz and wish I could buy it!

Don’t like last minute airline change. Not able to choose seat earlier.

It's only a short trip from Sydney to Melbourne, which i have done many times. The trip met my expectations

I really appreciated the fact that when I checked my bags at the Quantas counter after arriving from an international flight an hour early, the agent noticed I had a very long layover. He then found an earlier flight that allowed me to get to Cairns several hours earlier than I planned. That was amazing because I had already traveled over 20 hours and wasn’t looking forward to such a long layover. It allowed me to see my daughter and grandchildren much earlier (it had been two years since I visited last).

Qantas cancelled my flight for no good reason and rebooked me into a middle seat.

The flight met my expectations. It left and landed on time

Aircraft has better leg room than any of United's larger planes. We had requested mobility assistance for this and related flights. United's response to all was superb.

No snacks served! Seating in the kast row in uncomfortable.

The flight cancellation and process for getting a new flight was not that clear. United also had some delays that were unexpected. I am the most disappointed by the fact that I originally bought a Lufthansa ticket, only to be flown by United.

Our flight was delayed many times throughout the day. The final delay was about 8 hours. I spent time in line to speak to someone at their understaffed desk, and also spent time waiting online and then chatting with a service rep. None of the United employees were any help at all. I desperately wanted to go get rest and possibly re-book my trip but I was denied any compensation or voucher for a hotel. I was repeatedly told it was not United's fault and therefore they had no compensation to offer. Overall, a cold and callous experience.

Flight was fine, it was delayed but only 30 minutes, staff were efficient, lady making announcements at LAX was really hard to understand but the rest were great.

The flight was short and that was the best part. The flight was about 90 minutes delayed.

The male air hostess was rude and didn’t even offer me a drink. Poor customer service!

We left really late. Things that were out if anybody’s control I guess.

For some strange reason I was put in zone 5 for boarding even though I had paid premium price for a premium seat right behind business class. This must have been a flaw because everyone else around me in the same zone (row) had been placed in zone 3.

The crew on this flight was amazing. The most positive and friendly flight attendants I have witnessed in years!

This is not really an Air Canada item, but the PA system un the Cancun airport is very poor. Any passenger announcements or changes were basically inaudible.

Overall I will say it was a very good experience. It was as comfortable as can be expected for such a long flight - 12 hours from Toronto to Tokyo. Everyone was very pleasant and polite. Even the passengers were cooperative and trying to be nice to each other. Of course the space is limited on such a long flight. The bathrooms were actually very clean. The food was very good. I liked how there was a variety of food options. The in flight entertainment system was also very impressive! There were some children on the flight but they were well behaved and hardly ever crying. Great Job Canada Air! I will definitely fly with Air Canada again!

My wife and I especially liked the fact that the Toronto agent went beyond expectation to allow my wife and I to sit together. There was no option for us when we booked our seats. Very thankful!

Seats could be more comfortable and food can be better and price was too high

It was upsetting that the flights were canceled but that was due to weather. I did not receive any vouchers for food or a hotel stay when I was forced to spend the night in Montreal. I was also upset when my seat was changed many times.. The plane seemed old with a non-functioning screen and loose side pockets.. All in all in need of updating. On the positive side, the staff in areas was friendly and helpful.

Lost my bag. My first ever flight with them that they forced me to gate check my bag on, due to them having a 30 year old plane with small carry on bins, and they lost my bag. Never again.

It was good. They ran out of snacks, which we didn't get the first time through. Free movie selection was great. Glad my husband had extra headphones with him. Airplane was still cramped, but we survived. I had to squish between him and another man. I'm glad I was smaller than them, but still tight.

The flight got canceled multiple times and we had to drive their to reach midnight for our next morning interview. Poor and unriable experience. Now have to ask for a refund since we didn't need their rescheduled flight three days later.

Air Canada domestic flight is so so and is not conformable at all. Air Cañada international flight is Ok. The crew of international flight is more experienced and the plane is a bit better.

I didn’t fly I had to cancel as I booked the flight incorrectly, as in reverse order. I hope I wasn’t charged as I cancelled immediately.

When to visit.

Canada is a vast country, and the weather can be quite different in the East and in the West.

When to visit in summer.  Mid-May to late June is a great time to visit Canada! The summer tourist season has officially begun. There are new leaves in the trees; nature is in full bloom.  July-August is peak tourist season right across Canada, from Halifax to Vancouver. Cities and national parks are full of tourists from around the world. September-October is what is called the  Indian summer , when the forests don their brilliant hues of red and gold and nature is in full splendour. The weather is still very pleasant, especially in September, although evenings can be quite chilly. This is generally the lower season.

When to visit in winter.   The Canadian winter lasts from mid-December to mid-March. It is a great time to enjoy exciting winter activities like snowmobiling and dog sledding and skiing. Mid-December to early January is a very busy time of year because of all the Christmas and New Year's festivities along with the ski resorts enjoying their peak time. The weather is pleasant and snow conditions are at their best. January and February are the coldest months of the year. In March, the weather starts to warm and can be almost spring-like. Winter sports can still be enjoyed in early March.

Canadians definitely love the open road. Travelling by motorbike, car, truck or RV is an amazing way to see the country. With vast open roads and incredible scenery a self-drive experience provides freedom and flexibility to appreciate the small things on the way. You’ll be able to explore areas that often large coaches can’t access as well as enjoy as much time as you wish at each destination. Our diverse self-drive itineraries have been thoughtfully designed to offer you the road trip of a lifetime. Explore one of the world’s most scenic drives along the Icefields Parkway winding its way through the majestic Canadian Rockies.

Our packages can be combined with rail on either Rocky Mountaineer or VIA Rail to offer you the best experience of both worlds.

The Canadian Pacific Railway has over 22,500 km of track across Canada. From East Coast to West Coast, Canada is bursting with a wide variety of rail tours. The Alaskan Railroads carries both freight and passengers throughout its system, including Denali National Park. The railroad has a mainline over 760 km long. Enjoy incredible scenery as you travel across Canada’s vast countryside from the temperate Pacific Coast, to the majestic Canadian Rockies, the prairies of the mid-west to the metropolises of Ontario and Québec all the way to the Atlantic Coast – rail travel enables you to relax and enjoy the scenery rolling by in your comfortable seating options.

The two major operators in Canada are Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail . Rocky Mountaineer offers daylight travel options on 2 or 3 day itineraries operating from mid April to early October between the Pacific Coast and the Canadian Rockies, whereas VIA Rail operates year round with a variety of routes, seating and cabins from coast to coast.

If you love to see different wildlife, try booking a safari adventure in Churchill and see polar bears up close in their natural habitat. Some may even come near your Tundra Buggy and peep into your windows.

Ketchikan, Alaska  [ Ship ]

As the “Salmon Capital of the World”, this port of call harvests a collection of personalities, all yearning for the refreshing taste of salmon varieties.  Meanwhile, grizzly bears meander through the shallow waters in search of their next meal. Past the multi-colored homes lining the tranquil shores lies an emblem of Ketchikan’s antiquities — Totem Bight State Historical Park. Down on Creek Street, dollhouse-style homes line the wooden boardwalk inviting visitors to explore what’s left of the city’s red-light district days. With all that remains in this lively port of call, it’s no wonder why Ketchikan is one of the most sought-after destinations in Alaska.

Juneau, Alaska  [ Ship ]

Stop in the quaint town of Juneau, the capital of Alaska, and enjoy cruising past the stunning Dawes Glacier.

Rolling mountains — standing over 3,000 feet tall — overlook the still waters below, waiting for the majestic 20-foot Orcas to break the tranquil surface and make their grand debut. Meanwhile, the sweeping, 12-mile long Mendenhall Glacier rests nearby, slowly retreating under the steadfast sun. Nothing about Juneau is small. From the gaping landscapes to the dignified wildlife, there’s more than meets the eye in this unique port of call. Home to some of the largest gold mines in the world, Juneau has experienced its fair share of movement and continues to do so as the emblematic capital of Alaska. Relish in panoramic views of these precious lands atop Mount Roberts or immerse yourself in it all as you zipline through breathtaking elevations, dogsled along a trail and hike across serene meadows.

Skagway, Alaska  [ Ship ]

With less than 1,000 residents, Skagway boasts small-town charm with big-city riches. Offering the shortest route to the Klondike, this port of call was a popular choice among gold-rushers. But, many travelers overlooked the real treasures of Skagway — the rustic Victorian architecture, the winding wooden railways and violet-spotted fields beneath the snow-capped mountains. Journey to these awe-inspiring landmarks — like the Klondike Summit — by seaplane or the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. Or, retrace the steps of early settlers atop a majestic horse companion. Travel through vivid rainforests, emerald fields and the iconic Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Experience the state’s most prized possessions when you sail into this Alaska port of call.

Victoria, British Columbia  [ Ship ]

With pristine gardens sprinkled throughout the city, this vibrant port of call is every bit inviting and inspiring. Butchart Gardens — a 55-foot floral wonderland — boasts alluring walkways, enchanting stairways, glowing waterfalls and floral canopies dotted into vibrant blossoms. It’s no wonder why this fairytale haven is the most popular attraction in this charming port of call. Horse-drawn carriages carry visitors past charming houses and stately buildings that overlook the reflective waters. Meanwhile, patterned butterflies flutter throughout their very own 12,000 square-foot tropical paradise — home to symphonic birds and serene koi ponds. To experience true royalty, visit Craigdarroch Castle where wooden antiques and furnishings line the Victorian-style halls. No matter what you choose to do, your time in this Alaska cruise port will be nothing short of colorful.

1.5 hours late departing YVR for a 14-minute flight. Packed waiting area. Full plane. Families with tired, screaming kids. 40-minute wait for baggage at YYJ. For a Dash-8. Obviously there was some kind of breakdown but there was no communication from anyone. Most of this was not WestJet's fault but it was an unpleasant night overall. I fell asleep in a chair waiting for the luggage carousel to start.

Nothing to like about flying in the Dash 8s. With very small seats, little legroom, and a very noisy plane, nothing about such trips is enjoyable.

Difficult to say. Over crowded but that is the fault of the airplane not WestJet

For some reason there was a change in the cockpit which delayed us by an hour

flight changed by airline. then could not check imto mew flight because kiwi had messed up the reservation. still waiting to depart…

Crew was rude.didn’t even say hi or welcome to board

I like WJ but I don’t like traveling anymore

Good. Really crowded and busy. Going to Winnipeg plane was crowded and seats very narrow Now I remember why I dislike flying 😈

Having a lot of delayed flights on West Jet, however things always work out. So no complaints.

4 hour delay, lost our bags, staff was loud and it was an overnight flight

My wife and I especially liked the fact that the Toronto agent went beyond expectation to allow my wife and I to sit together. There was no option for us when we booked our seats. Very thankful!

I didn’t fly I had to cancel as I booked the flight incorrectly, as in reverse order. I hope I wasn’t charged as I cancelled immediately.

All but one of four were on time. One was delayed for an hour

Got the email to check in but when I tried to check in it said "cannot connect to server", so checked in at the desk.

For me was not enough water. + 200 ml would be perfect… Generally it was good.

Lovely staff for a short flight! Complimentary wine too made me happy.

Seating is comfortable, boarding is well organized. Toilets are very small. Even though I’m petite, still find no room to move around. Toilet paper holder hanging loosely, eventually they fell on the floor. The small sink is too shallow that causes water splashing on the floor. It doesn’t look pleasant. I didn’t purchase food or watch the entertainment, so no comments.

The boarding was fine , staff nice. Seats are always so awful on every plane. They need to make more room for passengers. Although Air north does not have televisions,, every airline should model the experience of flying with them. . Small meal , drinks, and a warm cookie. It’s a lovely airline with very friendly staff and I always look forward to flying with them.

The flight is very short, may be a little snack can be offered

Well you cancelled our direct flight to Austin from Toronto granted you got us on another flight but sent us to Denver then onto Austin delaying our arrival time in Austin by 7 hrs I was flying with 3 other people none of us were happy with our Air Canada experience

2024 solar eclipse map: Where to see the eclipse on April 8

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

map of north america showing the path of the april 8 solar eclipse

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Solar eclipse 2024 path of totality map

Map of path of totality across North America of solar eclipse, tilted to show its full path over mexico and canada

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface.

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Related: April 8 solar eclipse: What time does totality start in every state?

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

A map of total and partial eclipse coverage across North America on April 8, 2024.

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
