Cross the City or the Continent With These 6 Great Transport Planners

No Matter Where You're Going, These Apps Will Get You There

One of the most frustrating parts of travel planning is figuring out the best way to get between and around unfamiliar destinations.

Sure, there are flights between major cities—but what about when you’re heading somewhere a little farther afield? What happens when you arrive late at a remote airport or bus station and need to get into town? How much does the metro cost, and would you be better off taking the tram instead?

Fortunately, several companies are doing their best to take the guesswork out of the travel planning experience. Whether you’re heading across the continent or just across the suburb, these six sites and apps are well worth a look.

Rome2Rio is one of the best places to start planning a cross-country or cross-continent trip. Plugged into an exhaustive list of airlines, train, bus, and ferry companies, the site and apps quickly come up with a variety of transport options to suit your time and budget.

For a trip from Paris, France, to Madrid , Spain, it gave price ranges and journey durations for flights from both Paris airports, buses, trains, driving (including fuel costs), and even ride-sharing.

The website and app are slick and easy to use, especially for more unusual destinations where transport information is often more difficult to come by. An on-screen map shows the route for each alternative, and clicking on any option gives more detail.

All costs are shown, even including public transport costs to get to airports or train stations. From there, booking screens are only one more click away. You can also check out related travel options, like hotels and car rentals, along with city guides, schedules, and more.

Rome2Rio is available on the web , iOS , and Android .

Google Maps

While the ability to plan trips with Google Maps is hardly a secret, most people use it either for driving directions or to figure out how to navigate their way around a city on foot or by public transport. Those features are very useful for travelers, but there’s more to Google’s navigation app than that.

For that same trip from Paris to Madrid, the app defaults to a 12-hour driving route, but public transport choices are also available with a quick tap or click. Various combinations of buses and trains show up, with detailed information on layover times and the length of each leg. Cycling, ferry, and walking routes are also available.

Information isn’t as detailed as with Rome2Rio, though. There’s no indication of prices, and you’ll need to click through to the operator’s website to make a booking. Some of the private bus operators also didn’t show up, and there was no mention of ride-sharing either.

Still, Google Maps remains the best way of getting transport information within or between nearby towns and cities, especially since you can save maps for offline use while overseas or out of cell range.

Google Maps is available on the web, iOS, and Android .

Most useful for getting directions within cities, Here WeGo (formerly Here Maps) also has support for traveling longer routes by walking, cycling, public transport, car-sharing, and more. In testing, however, that Paris to Madrid route didn’t turn up any of the options shown by the competition.

If you’re just looking for navigation instructions within a town or city, though, Here is second-to-none for offline use. You can pick maps of regions or entire countries to download, and you’ll then have access to walking, public transport, and driving instructions even if you haven’t had cell service or Wi-Fi for days.

Navigation works perfectly while online, and reasonably well offline. If you’ve got the address of the place you’re looking for, you’ll have no problems, but searching by name (“Arc de Triomphe”) or type (“ATM”) doesn’t always turn up the desired results when you’re not connected.

With Google Maps taking strides in offline use in recent times, it’ll be interesting to see whether Here can retain its biggest point of difference. For now, though, I always keep both apps installed whenever traveling overseas.

Here WeGo is available on the web, iOS , and Android .

Rather than trying to cover everywhere in the world reasonably well, Citymapper takes an alternative approach: being the best transport planner for a smaller range of cities. The app covers around 40 medium to large cities, from London to Singapore.

Routes use a combination of official data from transport companies, and additions made by super-users of the app. All available transport modes are shown for a given city, including trams, ferries, buses, metro and more. Uber and other ride-sharing options are shown as well.

Depending on the types of transport available, you’ll often get exact prices for your journey. A trip from Earls Court to Buckingham Palace in London, for example, would apparently cost £2.40, and take 22 minutes on the District line tube.

Any transport delays are shown and taken into account, and public transit maps are available with a click from the home page.

Rather than just copying the website, the app adds several extra features. One of the best is the “Get Off” alert, using GPS to let you know when it’s time to jump off the bus. In unfamiliar cities, that can be a godsend. There’s also a “Telescope” option, that shows an image from Google StreetView of where to get on or off your transport.

Each part of the journey is shown and has its own features in the app—links to a timetable, upcoming departures, and the like. If you’re traveling to a city covered by Citymapper, you should absolutely install it before you go.

Citymapper is available on the web, iOS , and Android .

Formerly GoEuro, Omio focuses entirely on countries within Europe. The Omio site and app ask for a start point, end point, travel date, and number of travelers, then sorts the options by price and speed. That’s a combination of cost, duration, and departure time, so you don’t keep seeing that 5 a.m. Ryanair flight that nobody ever wants to take.

Despite boasting hundreds of transport partners, there’s no sign of BlaBlaCar, the popular European long-distance ride-sharing service. Still, it’s straightforward to use and buy tickets, with booking handled either directly by the company, or forwarded to the transport provider.

If your next vacation will see you tripping around Europe, it’s worth checking out Omio.

Omio is available on the web, iOS , and Android .

If your travels are taking you a little closer to home, take a look at Wanderu instead. The company’s inter-city transport planner covers the North American continent. Coverage is best in the United States, with most of Canada and key destinations in Mexico also included.

As well as the major players like Amtrak and Greyhound, the app also covers discounted fares from the likes of Megabus, Bolt Bus, and many others. After inputting your start and end points and travel date, you get a list of options across both trains and buses.

For each, you can quickly scan the price, trip length, departure and arrival times, and a list of amenities. Extras like power, Wi-Fi, and more legroom, are shown at a glance, and a quick click or tap shows all of the stops along the route.

Once you’ve picked the ticket that works for you, Wanderu sends you through to the bus or train company to book the ticket. It’s a straightforward process and means you’ll be dealing with the carrier directly if you have any changes or concerns.

To get directions from A to B, use Transit's trip planner. You can quickly navigate to your favorite locations and pull up addresses from your phone's calendar to plan your favorite trips.

Here's what this article covers:

• Enter your destination. Here you can: type an address, select a point on the map, select a favorite location , or pull up an address from your phone's calendar or contacts.

Layla describes itself as an AI trip planner, meaning you can use it to decide your vacation destination, create itineraries, and find suitable hotels and flights.

If you are uncertain about your destination or would like suggestions, you can ask Layla for advice regarding your trip. Otherwise, enter your destination and ask Layla to create your itinerary. Within a few seconds, you'll get a detailed plan for your trip.

As Layla is a chatbot, you can enter a prompt to ask it to change your itinerary. For instance, ask it to focus more on outdoor activities or include local restaurants. If you're unsatisfied with the activities planned on any particular day, you can give instructions and ask Layla to regenerate that part only.

Once you've perfected your itinerary, you can share it with your friends via a URL or add it to your bucket list.

2. Wonderplan

Wonderplan is a wonderful AI tool for planning your trip. To create your itinerary, Wonderplan first asks you to enter your destination country and city, your budget, the number of days you'll be staying, and your interests.

It then creates a travel plan within a few minutes, displaying various places to visit, their descriptions, and the time usually spent at each location. Although Wonderplan doesn't show the trip map, it does provide a link to Google Maps for each place.

It also displays different types of accommodation available (like Airbnb, hotel, or hostel) and their respective costs. Similarly, there are details about transportation, food, and activities. This way, you can estimate the potential cost of your trip.

In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

4. iplan.ai

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

5. Curiosio

The easiest last-minute travel plan is to get into a car and drive. Curiosio specializes in helping you plan an itinerary for a road trip to several major countries on all continents. It doesn't cover every single place, but the existing collection is impressive enough.

Curiosio uses its own AI engine, Ingeenee, which is trained on several crowdsourced travel-based resources, such as Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, Wikidata, Freebase, DBpedia, GeoNames, OSMNames, and OpenStreetMap. Through this dataset, it can chart an itinerary that meets your requirements across various parameters.

You can set options for a round trip or a one-way trip with starting and finishing points. If there are any places you want to visit on the way, add them in. Then set the number of travelers, dates of the journey, what vehicle you're using, total budget, and whether you want to visit places that spark curiosity or are obscure. The AI will usually give you multiple plans and routes for these options.

The itinerary includes a map of your route and a day-wise breakdown of where you'll be going and what you'll be seeing. Each point of interest is clickable to find more information about it. There are easy ways to share your itinerary with co-travelers, print it out, or even export it to Google Maps. Curiosio is one of the best road trip planners for your next adventure .

6. Trip Planner AI

Trip Planner AI plans a perfect trip to your dream destination. Begin creating your itinerary by entering the city you wish to visit and traveling dates. You can add multiple destinations here.

Then, select the kinds of activities you prefer, the number of people, and whether you're traveling with friends or family. Trip Planner AI asks you about your dietary preferences and budget.

As an optional step, you can specify the place where you'll be staying so that it creates an itinerary accordingly. If you haven't decided on your lodging yet, you can explore hotels suggested by Trip Planner AI.

Finally, Trip Planner AI generates a detailed itinerary, a map, and basic information about the city you're visiting. For each destination, it provides the details of the place, expected traveling time, and cost. Though it provides a complete plan for your trip, you can manually add or remove activities from your itinerary. You can also invite your friends to edit the itinerary and download it as a PDF.

7. Vacay Chatbot

Vacay Chatbot is not a dedicated itinerary maker but an AI chatbot that acts like your travel advisor. So, you can ask it to give travel recommendations, compare different destinations, and, of course, create an itinerary. If you've previously used AI chatbots like ChatGPT, you'll find this trip planner easy to use.

Just enter a prompt specifying your destination and trip details and ask Vacay Chatbot to create an itinerary. You can include details like your trip duration, budget, preferences, number of travelers, etc. The more details you provide, the better your itinerary will be.

One of the downsides of using Vacay Chatbot is that it doesn't provide a map for your trip. However, you can use these apps to plot your itinerary on a map .

All these travel planning AI apps urge you not to use the itinerary as-is and only treat it as a template or guide to begin planning your trip. This is because they currently have several limitations, like databases that aren't recently updated or require specific prompts from the user.

A real human travel agent will still give you a more customized itinerary, but it will cost you a few bucks. If you want a free base guide, more basic travel planning apps are a good starting point.

Get directions & show routes

You can get directions for driving, public transit, walking, ride sharing, cycling, flight, or motorcycle on Google Maps. If there are multiple routes, the best route to your destination is blue, all other routes are gray. Some directions in Google Maps are in development and may have limited availability. 

Important: Stay alert when you use directions on Google Maps. Always be aware of your surroundings to ensure the safety of yourself and others. When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.

• On your computer, open Google Maps .

• Click points on the map, type an address, or add a place name.

Tip: To choose another route in any transportation mode, select it on the map. Each route shows the estimated travel time on the map.

Google Maps transportation modes

You can get directions for different modes of transportation in Google Maps. Learn about the differences in features and availability between each mode:

• If you want to change a driving route, click and hold a spot on the route and drag it to a new spot on the map.

• Not all cities have public transit directions in Google Maps. Before you can get transit directions, your local transit agency needs to add their route info to Google Maps.

• If you want directions in an area with ride or taxi services, you can compare ride services with transit and walking directions. Learn how to request a ride .

• Directions to multiple destinations, or waypoints, aren’t available for public transit or flight searches.

Add multiple destinations

You can get directions to multiple destinations for all modes of transportation except public transit or flight.

• Add a starting point and a destination.

• You can add up to 9 stops.

Privately owned vehicle (POV) mileage reimbursement rates

GSA has adjusted all POV mileage reimbursement rates effective January 1, 2024.

* Airplane nautical miles (NMs) should be converted into statute miles (SMs) or regular miles when submitting a voucher using the formula (1 NM equals 1.15077945 SMs).

For calculating the mileage difference between airports, please visit the U.S. Department of Transportation's Inter-Airport Distance website.

The End Date of your trip can not occur before the Start Date.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

I m staying 5 nights in Forest and planning to use public transport to do day trips to Bruges

I m now googling how to use the public transport

in order to use public transport in brussels.

i have read that Every STIB bus, tram and

metro station is equipped with a specific

contactless payment device. and i can pay for the trip using

my contactless bank card (debit or credit) on-board ..

so my questions are :

-say for the bus for example , will this ticketing device allow me to buy the simple(BRUPASS 1 JOURNEY)?

-or shall i just use STIB-MIVB app for paying for tickets?

-do u recommend me to go with multiples of simple BRUPASS 1 JOURNEYs

- i m travelling with my wife and daughters(11&9). so is there a discount for kids/family?##

Brupass 10 journey tickets will come cheaper.

No, you have no choice in choosing different tickets on this device. It's just a single trip, costing 2,10€ (with a total maximal cost of 7,5€/day). If you travel with your family by this method, just know each member need to use his own individual bankcard.
