The traveling wilburys music.

George Harrison first mentioned the Traveling Wilburys during a radio interview with Bob Coburn on the Rockline radio station in February 1988. When asked what he planned to do as a follow-up for his Cloud Nine album, Harrison replied: “What I’d really like to do next is… to do an album with me and some of my mates… a few tunes, you know. Maybe the Traveling Wilburys… it’s this new group I got: it’s called the Traveling Wilburys, I’d like to do an album with them and later we can all do our own albums again.

“Wilbury” was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, “ We’ll bury ’em in the mix”.   Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance and the term was used again when the group were together…

The Traveling Wilburys’ all-star configuration had such a rockin’ good time cutting the track ‘Handle With Care’ that they decided to release it under the Wilburys moniker. The band’s camaraderie can be heard in every groove of their albums Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, reissued here on vinyl with a bonus 12′ of remixed and previously unreleased tracks.

The Traveling Wilburys Collection - 3-LP Set

This edition of the Wilburys’ GRAMMY-winning 1988 debut album, Traveling Wilburys Volume 1, is now available after being out-of-print for over a decade. The album won the GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, and introduced the Wilburys’ classics ‘Handle With Care’, ‘End Of The Line’ and ‘Heading For The Light,’ among others.

The Traveling Wilburys Vol.1

After being out-of-print for over a decade, The Wilbury’s second album, 1990’s Traveling Wilburys Volume 3, is now celebrated with a new edition. Though it was their second release, the album was mischievously titled Vol. 3 by George Harrison. According to Jeff Lynne, “That was George’s idea. He said, ‘Let’s confuse the buggers.'”

The rock supergroup was comprised of Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, and Tom Petty.

They must have been the ultimate Anglo-American supergroup, though that was never their avowed intention. Traveling Wilburys actually fell together by accident. The kismet can be linked to George Harrison and Jeff Lynne’s fortuitous meet in Los Angeles in spring of 1988, with the former looking for studio time to record a B-side. Mutual friends Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan would join the former Beatle and the Move/ELO stalwart, and then, as if that weren’t mind-boggling enough, George was doing some business at Tom Petty ’s house, and the laidback Floridian hopped aboard. Well, you would, wouldn’t you, given that lot’s track record!

In keeping with Harrison’s love of a practical joke and well-chosen pseudonym (or alibi), the quintet adopted alter egos: George became Nelson; Lynne settled on Otis; Dylan plumped for Lucky; Roy took the country option with Lefty; and Petty’s handle was the grand-sounding Charlie T, Jr. While they made two albums, they would never use their real identities. Old masters of the masquerade for sure, but the two discs they left behind – the second was recorded in the wake of Roy Orbison’s posthumously released album Mystery Girl (Roy died in 1988, aged just 52) – are packed with great songs, some real Dylan gems, classic Harrison licks and a smooth country-rock sound courtesy of Petty and Lynne’s studio expertise and genius for harmony and melody. Both albums are recommended for discovery, particularly if you are a fan of any of the above – chances are, you love ’em all.

While they were only properly extant during the years 1988 to 1990, Traveling Wilburys had plenty of previous. George Harrison was pondering what to do after releasing his Cloud Nine album and, during a radio interview in LA, he conversationally dropped the bombshell that he’d like to link up with some mates. He already had the concept, since the name Traveling Wilburys had been an in-joke for him and Jeff Lynne. The idea snowballed and became a reality. Over a meal with Roy Orbison, it was decided to put plans into place and Bob Dylan was contacted for the use of his Malibu studio. As luck would have it Bob wanted in, and when Harrison went to collect a guitar he’d stashed at Tom Petty’s home, he too expressed an interest in joining the session that resulted in ‘Handle With Care’.

How Debut Album ‘Murmur’ Spread The Word About R.E.M.

This song was deemed so good that it was used to open the Wilburys’ debut album,  Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 . That track became their most successful single, with high placing in the US, UK and Australia. A definitive country-rock’n’roller with a descending folk-rock chord sequence and an opening salvo that recalled ELO’s ‘10358 Overture’, ‘Handle With Care’ was completed with drummer Jim Keltner.

The album proper would be certified triple-platinum and won great acclaim. Dylan’s ‘Dirty World’, ‘Congratulations’, ‘Tweeter And The Monkey Man’ (a hilarious trip through the mythology of Bruce Springsteen ’s blue-collar hinterlands) and the reissue bonus track ‘Like A Ship’ are the equals of anything the man unleashed around that time. George fans were also delighted by ‘Heading For The Light’ (another bonus track that’s essential to catch is ‘Maxine’). With Roy Orbison bringing in his archetypal weepie ‘Not Alone Any More’, Tom Petty draggin’ on ‘Last Night’ and Lynne delighting all with his powerful ‘Rattled’, the set exceeded all expectations. Sometimes this kind of project can fall flat on its backside, but the Wilburys pulled it off with ease. The group effort ‘End Of The Line’, with its rhythmic freight-train delivery, is particularly poignant since it was released as a single a month after Orbison’s death. (The Wilbury’s next single was a cover of ‘Nobody’s Child’, a song The Beatles had covered in Hamburg in 1961 with Tony Sheridan. It was gifted to the benefit album, Nobody’s Child: Romanian Angel Appeal , released in July 1990.)

Though events surrounding Orbison’s unexpected demise caused the remaining four Wilburys to take stock, they had the Wilbury bug, and the second album, confusingly called Traveling Wilburys Vol 3 (a piece of Monty Pythonesque espionage hammered home by the fact Michael Palin wrote liner notes for the debut, and Eric Idle did the same for the new recordings) was rushed out in Autumn of 1990 while lead-off single ‘She’s My Baby’ was on the airwaves. Featuring Gary Moore on lead guitar, Jim Horn on sax, Ray Cooper on percussion and Keltner (aka Buster Sidebury) behind the kit, this joint effort was credited to four new folks: Clayton (Lynne), Spike (Harrison), Boo (Dylan) and Muddy (Petty).

Once again, Dylan stepped up to the plate with some exceptional songwriting. ‘If You Belonged To Me’ and ‘Where Were You Last Night?’ are full of his colloquial genius, and ‘7 Deadly Sins’ is vintage Bob. Petty stretched out more here too, combining with Dylan on ‘Inside Out’ and bossing the room on ‘Cool Dry Place’ and ‘You Took My Breath Away’. The George’n’Jeff camaraderie shines through on ‘New Blue Moon’; the closing dance number ‘Wilbury Twist’ (“Grace is the key to successful dancing,” according to Eric Idle’s notes) was a fitting finale. The reissue bonus tracks restore ‘Nobody’s Child’ to the fold, while there’s a stirring corer of the Del Shannon hit ‘Runaway’ (tying in with the fact that Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers were working on a new album with the great man, Drop Down And Get Me – and very fine that was as well).

Both of the Wilburys’ essentially good-natured and entertaining albums are also available on the box set The Traveling Wilburys Collection , with a DVD featuring their five music videos, a tongue-in-cheek documentary called The True History Of The Traveling Wilburys (rest assured, it’s not) and a choice of formats including the desirable deluxe edition, linen-bound and containing a collectable book for the connoisseur. You might then hunt down the vinyl edition since that comes with a bonus 12” featuring some extended versions and a great remix of ‘Not Alone Anymore’. The box was issued six years after George’s death; his son Dhani plays lead guitar on Bob Dylan’s ‘Like A Ship’ and adds backing vocals to that and the reconfigured ‘Maxine’, a song that his father had written, so bringing the project to a suitable close.

Grand sales and sterling press aside, it’s worth pointing out that Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group in 1989. The pity is that this crack group never toured – though none were averse to the principle. But as Tom Petty pointed out, that might spoil the moment. “I think it would ruin it in a way. Then you’re obligated to be responsible, and it’s not in the character of that group. It would make it very formal and that would be the wrong spirit.”

He was probably right, but then we still have the original music made by the five sons of Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr. Sir, we all owe you a big one.

The story of The Traveling Wilburys

' src=

By TheClarion

travelling wilburys george harrison

With Monday’s passing of Tom Petty at 66 years old, we are all going to look back and reflect on his career. So I want to take a look at one of his lesser known and under-appreciated projects, the supergroup called The Traveling Wilburys.

It consists of Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. Five musical powerhouses in their own right that recorded a song together by accident and circumstance, and turned into a full fledged band.

This is how the story goes: Harrison was in Los Angeles in 1988 and needed to record a song for the B-side of “This Is Love,” one of his singles. Lynne was in the city producing albums for both Petty and Orbison. Harrison told Lynne and Orbison his need to write a new song in a day, and the two offered him help to do so. They then needed a studio to record in at short notice, and asked to use Dylan’s home studio. He gladly let them use it, but also asked to help on the song. On his way to the studio, Harrison stopped by Petty’s house to pick up one of his guitars and invited him along as well. The five then wrote and recorded “Handle With Care.”

The song was so good that they decided to keep it, form a band and record nine more songs together to release an album.

“Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1” was released the same year and was a critical and commercial success, selling two million copies within six months in the US. It reached Number 3 in the US charts and spent over 50 weeks there. The album was certified triple-platinum by the RIAA.

“Vol. 1” was the highest charting album for Dylan, Orbison, and Lynne in several years.

The album was driven by the band members desire to jam out together, and in the interest of making it an ego free project, they all adopted fake names with the last name Wilbury and shared the songwriting credits. Their real names did not appear on the album.

Harrison became Nelson, Lynne was Otis, Orbison was Lefty, Dylan was known as Lucky and Petty was Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.

The name was created by using the term Harrison and Lynne used to refer to studio equipment. They called Limiters and equalizers “wilburys.” Hence, The Traveling Wilburys.

The atmosphere of the recording sessions were laid back, and it contributes to the relaxed feeling of the music.

“We would arrive about twelve or one o’clock and have some coffee,” Lynne said of the sessions. “Somebody would say, ‘What about this?’ and start on a riff. Then we’d all join in, and it’d turn into something. We’d finish around midnight and just sit for a bit while Roy would tell us fabulous stories about Sun Records or hanging out with Elvis. Then we’d come back the next day to work on another one. That’s why the songs are so good and fresh—because they haven’t been second-guessed and dissected and replaced. It’s so tempting to add stuff to a song when you’ve got unlimited time.”

I personally love this album because it feels like the best of the five artists was thrown into a blender and made a truly special product. You can feel that they are having fun working together.

Songs you should listen to from their first album are “Handle With Care,” “End of the Line,” “Congratulations” and “Rattled.”

Months after the release of “Vol. 1,” Orbison died surprisingly after a heart attack. The band forged on in his memory and released a sequel in 1990 jokingly titled “Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3.” While not as good as the first, it contains some gems, like “Wilbury Twist” and “The Devil’s Been Busy.”

In 2001, Harrison passed away due to lung cancer, and the Wilburys did as well since Harrison held the rights to both albums and was the unofficial leader of the group.

Now only Dylan and Lynne remain following Petty’s death. However, the music lives on and now is as good a time as any to brush the dust off and listen to the five superstars jam out.

I’ll leave you with the chorus of “End of the Line.”

“Well it’s all right, riding around in the breeze Well it’s all right, if you live the life you please Well it’s all right, doing the best you can Well it’s all right, as long as you lend a hand”

4 Songs You Didn’t Know George Harrison Wrote for the Traveling Wilburys

by Jacob Uitti October 29, 2023, 7:30 am

George Harrison was the lead guitar player in perhaps the most well-known band of all time. That’s The Beatles , of course. But many music fans may not know that Harrison was also the big-name principal co-founder of another formidable supergroup. That’s the Traveling Wilburys .

Videos by American Songwriter

That band featured the likes of Harrison, Roy Orbison , Bob Dylan , Tom Petty , and Jeff Lynne. Together, the all-star collection of artists wrote songs, sang together, and recorded two LPs, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 .

[RELATED: 3 Songs You Didn’t Know Cody Johnson Wrote for Other Artists]

1. “You Took My Breath Away”

Written by Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne

From the Traveling Wilburys’ second album, the strangely named 1990 LP, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 (indeed, where is Vol. 2?), this song, like all when it comes to the supergroup, features writing credits from each and every member. And while Petty sings the lead vocals for the track, it’s easy to hear the former Beatle’s influence on the track, both in the chorus and the verse and the acoustic guitar underneath it all.

You took my breath away I want it back again Look at the mess I’m in I don’t know what to say I don’t know how to feel You don’t care anyway All I can do is wait You took my breath away

2. “Not Alone Any More”

Written by Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne

This song comes from the band’s 1988 debut LP, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 . The song features lead vocals from perhaps the greatest singer ever, Orbison, and the lead writer was Lynne, who had Orbison in mind when he composed it. All members of the group earned writing credit for the acoustic-driven track. The song includes doo-wop-esque backing vocals from the band.

You always said that I’d be back again That I’d come running to you in the end I thought that you were on your own And now I find you’re not alone I’ll see you through the rain Through the heartache and pain It hurts like never before You’re not alone any more

3. “Rattled”

This song from the band’s 1988 debut LP features Lynne as the primary vocalist, but it also includes Harrison, Petty, and Orbison on backing vocals. With a driving drum beat like a locomotive over train tracks, this song really pushes and propels.

Well baby, baby, baby won’t you save one night for me? Baby, baby, baby is there something wrong with you? Baby, baby, baby this is outta my control It looks like nothing’s wrong, but deep down in my soul

I’m twisted Shaken Rattled I get rattled baby, over you

Rattled baby, over you

4. “New Blue Moon”

From the 1990 album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 , this song includes Harrison singing lead along with Lynne and Petty with the mercurial Dylan singing on the song’s bridge. The acoustic-driven song has a bit of an island vibe and a proto-1950s rock sense, imbued with harmonies, lots of percussion, and lilting vocal deliveries.

I don’t want nothing Nothing but you Am I waiting Looking for a new blue moon

I’m so tired waiting Waiting for you Am I waiting Looking for a new blue moon

So many moons have come and gone And none of them were blue Too many times the sun came up, but It came up without you, you, ya yoo hoo-ooh

The Story Behind “Handle with Care” by the Traveling Wilburys and How it Was Inspired by a Box in Bob Dylan’s Garage

W hile George Harrison was recording Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne, they discussed creating a band to record a song as a bonus track for his next European single. The resulting supergroup took on pseudonyms as half-brothers from the traveling Wilbury family. Based more on “who would you rather hang out with” than musical ability, they brought in Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison to fill out the group. They each shared a love of ’50s music as well as the comedy of Monty Python. As the song was recorded, everyone agreed it was too good for the limited exposure it would receive as a bonus track on a European single. They instead recorded an entire album and used the song as the lead single. Let’s take a look at the story behind “Handle with Care” by the Traveling Wilburys.

Been beat up and battered ’round

Been sent up, and I’ve been shot down

You’re the best thing that I’ve ever found

Handle me with care

The Band’s Formation

As Harrison worked on Cloud Nine , producer Lynne was also working on Roy Orbison’s Mystery Girl . Although the studio was booked, Harrison invited Orbison to join him for the session. He called Dylan, who agreed to let them use his Malibu studio. Harrison went to Petty’s house to retrieve a guitar and asked the singer to join them in the studio.

Reputations changeable

Situations tolerable

Baby, you’re adorable

It Came from a Box

When the band recorded the basic tracks, they used Dylan’s Ampex recorder in his Malibu garage. There was a box there marked “Handle with Care,” which inspired the lyrics. The track started with acoustic and electric six- and 12-string guitars and a drum machine.

I’m so tired of being lonely

I still have some love to give

Won’t you show me that you really care?

A Great Picture Emerges

All five band members shared writing credit on “Handle with Care,” but Petty talked about writing a song with Dylan. In 2010, he told Mojo magazine, “There’s nobody I’ve ever met who knows more about the craft of how to put a song together than he does. I learned so much from just watching him work. He has an artist’s mind and can find in a line the key word, and think how to embellish it to bring the line out. I had never written more words than I needed, but he tended to write lots and lots of verses, then he’ll say, this verse is better than that, or this line. Slowly, this great picture emerges. He was very good in The Traveling Wilburys. When someone had a line, he could make it a lot better in big ways.”

Everybody’s got somebody to lean on

Put your body next to mine and dream on

“I’m playing the guitar in front of a Beatle!”

They originally asked Mike Campbell, who is part of Petty’s backup band The Heartbreakers, to play the guitar. He told Uncut magazine, “They didn’t have the slide intro. I set up my amp, and Tom, Jeff, and George are there. I’m trying my best, but I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m playing the guitar in front of a Beatle!’ I played pretty good, but I said, ‘I really think George would be better on this. His fill would be much sweeter.’ So, he used my amp, and I handed him my guitar. He came up with that beautiful guitar part.”

I’ve been fobbed off, and I’ve been fooled

I’ve been robbed and ridiculed

In daycare centers and night schools

The Recording

Harrison added the electric slide guitar part on a Rickenbacker 12-string, and Dylan played harmonica. Drummer Ian Wallace and Lynne overdubbed percussion. The Wilburys wanted Jim Keltner to be involved, and he also added some percussion to the drum machine track at Quincy Jones’ Los Angeles studio.

Been stuck in airports, terrorized

Sent to meetings, hypnotized

Overexposed, commercialized

“The Big O”

The “Handle with Care” music video was shot in October 1988 at an abandoned brewery in Los Angeles. David Leland directed the video after recently completing Harrison’s HandMade Films production Checking Out . The Wilburys performed the song around a single microphone. It was the last video to feature Orbison, who died of a heart attack two months later. “The Big O” had entertained the rest of the band by reciting entire Monty Python sketches. In 2015, Lynne told author John Van der Kiste, “He’s got this enormous and most infectious giggle you’ve ever heard, and we’d all be giggling like schoolgirls after a minute or two and all fall about!”

A Guitar on a Chair

The remaining members of the band carried on and made another video for “End of the Line.” When Orbison’s lines came up, shots of a guitar on a chair were shown to represent the departed singer. Funnily enough, a second album was also made, entitled Volume 3 .

The Song’s Afterlife

In 2002, Petty, Lynne, and The Heartbreakers performed the song at the Concert for George , a tribute to Harrison, who died in 2001. In 2004, they performed “Handle with Care” with Harrison’s son Dhani at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. In 2006, Jenny Lewis covered the song on her debut solo album Rabbit Fur Coat . In 2014, Lynne performed the song in London’s Hyde Park for the BBC Radio 2 Festival in a Day . In 2019, Dhani Harrison was the featured guest during Jeff Lynne and ELO’s tour of the U.S. He included the song in his sets.

I’ve been uptight and made a mess

But I’ll clean it up myself, I guess

Oh, the sweet smell of success
