We are one third into our Camino de Santiago adventure. I can say that, after almost 300 Km on the road, choosing Ultreya as our travel agent was the best choice. Extremely professional. They were very responsive during the planning period and the execution is just perfect.

We did the self-guided Camino Frances from Sarria to Santiago broken up over 6 days of walking in June. I’m embarrassed I didn’t write this sooner as my family has been talking about how AMAZING Ultreya and Nellie were for months now. One of our group is already researching going back on a different route in Ultreya’s portfolio. From the second we arrived at the Santiago airport and got picked up by our driver, we knew we made the right choice with Ultreya! Nellie hired us a fantastic driver who spoke fluent English and gave us a lot of cultural and historical information on the region as he drove us to the start of our Camino just beyond Sarria. I am not exaggerating when I say that there were multiple times EVERY DAY on the Camino when someone in our group of 5 would mention “thank goodness for Nellie” or “Ultreya has been worth every penny.” All of the hotels were very good with several being EXCELLENT. We originally had thought not to include dinner as friends who used a bigger tour company had said the wished they had done their own dinners, but at Nellie’s urging we went along with the included dinners. This was the right decision, food at EVERY place was incredible and every place was able to accommodate one of our group with gluten sensitivity. The Camino itself was not kind to us, we had almost nonstop rain while we were there and many blisters despite extensive preparation for the walk. However with Ultreya having taken care of the planning, we were able to focus on taking care of ourselves to make it to the end and know that food and accommodation would be comfortable. We had a successful Camino and it was made easier with the expertise of Ultreya and Nellie without a doubt.

We had a life long dream to walk the Camino. When we decided to go, I researched many companies and decided to work with Ultreya Tours. Wow! Wow! Wow! The attention to detail, willingliness and promptness in responding to requests, and the service provided once we were in Spain were above and beyond excellent. Ms Nellie listen to how I wanted to carry out this trip, and she far and above exceeded my expectations. Excellency on every aspect. I highly recommend and encourage anyone planning to make such a life changing trip to call her. Something so important and meaningful should only be handeled by someone like her. Someone who is extremely knowledgeable and a true expert on Camino travel. With her help and perfect planning we were able to fulfill our dream of a “Trip Of a Lifetime”! Thanks!!!

My best friend and I booked our Camino through Ultreya, and Nellie was our contact. She built an awesome itinerary for us, picking hotels and villas that we wouldn't have known about, let alone booked (we picked the package that included all breakfasts and dinners). As is common on the Camino, we ended seeing the same few people over again on the trail but a group of three also stayed in nearly all the same lodgings as us. On our penultimate day, we finally asked the group if they had also booked with Ultreya, and they said no, they had planned their own itinerary and picked the best and most interesting places they could find. So that is the sort of experience you'll get with Nellie! We speak little to no Spanish, so we definitely couldn't have booked some of the places, because many of the hosts in the country lodgings did not speak English. We had no problems except at one hotel, a converted 19th century mill, the owner/hostess/driver fell ill and couldn't drop us off where she left us and we had a difficult time speaking with her replacement, who spoke no English (and Google translate was useless). That was the only hiccup and resolved itself within an hour. All the lodgings had amazing, delicious food with such generous hosts and interesting histories and architecture. When we arrived in Santiago, our hotel did not have its own restaurant, and Nellie had booked us an amazing meal at a great new tapas place at the market. We were so glad to see it was not one of the touristy places in the old town. We had no idea what was in store for us, which was 10 courses of tapas served by the owner himself. We also used the masseuse that Ultreya recommends in Santiago, and he came to our hotel room and gave us sports massages. The price was fair and the service was great (and he was super nice!). Nellie was responsive whenever we needed her, and we would love to book our next Camino with Ultreya again (when we recover).

A massive thank you to the Ultraguide on the Camino, Nellie organised a wonderful trip with at least one delightful surprise a day (sweetest hotels, fab swimming pools, visits...) If you want to join the pilgrims' mob, contact Nellie, listen and build your own Camino. Hélène and David

Nellie helped us plan our Camino Portugues. She was responsive to our preferences and requests, patient and knowledgeable re all our questions and readily available if we needed advice along the way. We were pleased with the hotel choices and suggestions. Luggage transfer worked flawlessly (tuitrans and correos). I had looked into a couple of agencies before going with Nellie but I felt they were not really listening to what I was saying - but she was. Here is someone who understands what business she is in and is very client-focused. Look no further.

The blog about the Santiago de Compostela & the Way of Saint James

Welcome to Santiago de Compostela

Welcome to Santiago de Compostela, the Sacred City, built stone by stone around the said resting place of the Apostle Saint James.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela at sunset

The Galician novelist Valle Inclán wrote that: “… of all the old Spanish cities, the one which seems to be trapped in a dream of granite, immutable and eternal is Santiago de Compostela…. although it doesn’t appear ancient, but rather everlasting. But Compostela, in the ecstasy of the pilgrims, unites all its stones in one single evocation. There, the passing hours are just one hour, repeating itself eternally, under a grey rainy sky…”

You are beautiful, you are the biggest gift!

It’s valentine’s day 2021 so we’d like to talk about love, on the camino de santiago. did you fall in love or back into love on the camino share your camino love stories below.

I meet the love of my life, Emilio, in Santiago de Compostela, 6 years and a week ago and we couldn’t be happier together.

We had clients asking us for ideas on how to propose at the end of their Camino (in Finisterre or the Obradoiro Square); help on how to get married on the Way ; meeting on the Camino, changing their plans to walk together and returning to the Camino together months later ; celebrating their honeymoon or a special anniversary on the Camino… ( and by the way, we absolutely love getting these types of requests and having a small part in your love story)

But many forget that before you can love someone else, you need to love yourself. Many walk the Camino in Holy Years like this year and the next, to obtain plenary indulgeance from the Church but I also believe taking time off for yourself, to introspect while you are walking, see the good in people, reunit with your beliefs, is a very powerful therapy and the occasion to forgive yourself and fall back into love with yourself.

You are beautiful, you are the biggest gift! (these were messages found near the Iron Cross in Foncebadon)

Review: If You Stand Here: A Pilgrim’s Tour of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela by Anne Born

Want to learn about the cathedral santiago de compostela in galicia, the final resting place of the apostle saint james and the end of the camino de santiago.

If You Stand Here: A Pilgrim's Tour of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela by Anne Born

It is the largest Romanesque Cathedral in #Spain. 94 m long with a transept of 63 m, a maximum height of 32 m and construction of the building started in 1075. But although this is useful information, the importance of this building is not in these details. What interests Anne Born @nilesite in her new book If you stand here… is the stories of those who were lucky enough to stand in this great Cathedral.

Anne will guide you through the Nave, the Cloister, the different squares and even the rooftop, telling you what events took place at the very spot you are standing and which historical figure were involved. And there were many, from the Spanish princess Catherine of Aragon, to Cosimo de Medici III, to Eva Perón, Cary Grant, Frederico Garcia Lorca…

She mentions this about Georgiana Goddard King’s own guidebook of the Cathedral, but this is also true with If you stand here… “you will feel like as if she were in fact present beside you, guiding you by the hand, as she would with a friend.”

Reading this book, we not only learned about the building but the History of Santiago de Compostela and to a greater extend Spain and Europe.
