23rd April, Sant Jordi. Find out why you'll want to be in Barcelona.
There's one day every year when travellers and visitors to Barcelona feel like they're on another planet. The Barcelona logo history and what the symbol means
- BY Bogdan Sandu
- 21 January 2023
When we talk about football, we can’t stop mentioning one of the best clubs in the world. FC Barcelona is one of the most productive and recognized organizations when it comes to sports. The number of fans around the world is worth admiring, and everyone defends the Barcelona logo with their hearts.
For a fan who has been admiring them for a while, the story of its creation may not be anything new, but if we are starting to know the Barça, we need to review it. This Spanish club was founded on November 29, 1899. It all began a few days before when Hans Gamper published in a newspaper his intention to form a football club.
At the time, 11 people responded to the invitation, being enough to create the FC Ball. Over time, the fame of the club was consolidated and elements that represented their culture and beliefs were added. An example is the motto “More than a club”, which transcends by meaning that Barcelona has a strong influence in different fields, not only in sports.
Let’s see what the FCB logo symbolizes, and how that has served to become a benchmark for Catalans.
Key takeaways
- Crest Origin and Evolution : The current Barcelona crest dates from 1910, following a competition, and has only had minor adjustments since. It includes symbols like the St. George’s Cross and the colors blue and red, maintaining its essence over time.
- Symbolic Elements : The logo includes the St. George’s Cross to represent Catalonia and its patron saint, and the red stripe flag on a gold background, known as La Senyera, for its Catalan roots.
- Color Significance : The club’s colors, blue and red, known as “Blaugrana,” have been a part of the logo since its inception and are believed to be inspired by FC Zurich or a tribute to two of Barça’s first players, Arthur, and Ernest Witty.
- Logo Redesign Competition : After a crisis in 1908, a competition led by Joan Gamper, the club’s founder, resulted in a new logo designed by Carles Comamala, who was a medical student, amateur artist, and Barcelona player. This logo has been tweaked slightly over the years but retains its original elements.

The current crest dates from 1910, when it was chosen by competition, and since then it has only changed aesthetically. The top quarters contain the St. George’s Cross , representing the patron saint of Catalonia and which is also present in the coat of arms of the city of Barcelona , and the Catalan flag . The bottom quarters contain the colours of the Club and a ball , which is central to the crest and the BARÇA style of play.

Description
Today, the Saló de Cent is a snapshot of a part of the institutional history of Barcelona’s municipal government. The way it looks now is the result of multiple changes over time.
Constructed by master builder Pere Llobet in 1369, it is one of the best examples of civil Gothic architecture in Catalonia. It is characterised by diaphanous spaces and a flat ceiling, where sections of wooden beams alternate with stone arches. The name refers to the fact that this hall was the meeting place of the Consell de Cent established by King Jaume I, although in the 14th century only three sections of beams were in existence. In 1860, the Hall was enlarged by adding two sections identical to the original three.
In 1914 there was a public competition for the decoration of the Hall of One Hundred. The winner was Enric Monserdà. On the side walls Monserdà placed some damask illustrating the history of the City embroidered in velvet, satin and gold with the coats of arms of the municipalities annexed to Barcelona which today constitute the districts within the city. The year when each was annexed can also be seen. The floor was redone with a representation of iconographic elements that identified the different city guilds that formed part of the Consell de Cent. The alabaster work-completed in 1924- that Monserdà designed for the front wall is a masterpiece that represents many of the historical moments of the City Hall.
Today, the Saló de Cent is the place where the city’s most significant events are held, such as the presentation of medals of honour, the swearing-in of councillors, the celebration of civil weddings and commemorative events.
In 1860, a room was constructed next to the Saló de Cent, where the councillors could debate the most important aspects of municipal policy.
The presidential table is surrounded by 50 wooden seats, split into two blocks, and there are two galleries, one for the public and the other for the press.
This is where the Full Council holds its plenary sessions on the last Friday of each month (except August).
Designed by Josep M. Sert in 1929, the name refers to the 14th century chronicles written by Ramon Muntaner and Bernat Desclot about the expedition of the Catalan Company led by Roger de Flor to the East. The murals depict various episodes from the battles of the Almogavers in their fight against the Turks.
It is currently used for press conferences, seminars and institutional events.
In this video, you can see how the institution has evolved since its beginnings back in the 13th century with the Consell de Cent [the Council of the One Hundred], until the City Council of today.
The seat of Barcelona City Council, the Casa de la Ciutat, is home to many different styles, and has a great diversity of architectural features, room layouts and decorative elements. Each of them marks an important period of time or a significant event in the history of Barcelona and of Catalonia.
These self-guided visits will be available every Sunday expect on public holidays. You can explore the spaces at your own pace.

Lewandowski committed to Barcelona amid speculation over his future, says agent
SoccerNews in La Liga 12 May 2024
Robert Lewandowski remains committed to Barcelona amid speculation over his future, with his agent refuting reports the Poland striker wants to leave.
Reports in Spain suggested Barcelona are considering the contract of 35-year-old Lewandowski as Xavi looks to bolster his attacking line-up after missing out on the LaLiga title to rivals Real Madrid.
Lewandowski’s agent Pini Zahavi rubbished reports that he is set to meet with Barca president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco, however.
“This is nonsense,” Zahavi told Polish journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
“He wants to play one more year in Catalonia. He has signed a contract for four years.
“It will depend on his performances in the 2024-2025 season and includes a clause that provides for the possibility of termination of the contract if Lewy does not play 55 per cent of the minutes.”
Lewandowski once again leads Barcelona’s scoring charts this term in LaLiga, having found the net 17 times in 31 appearances before Monday’s meeting with Real Sociedad.
Barcelona will hope to leap back up to second in the Spanish top-flight standings with victory over La Real, currently trailing Girona by two points ahead of their game in hand.

How to plan a successful trip to Barcelona, with 7 key tips from a local
- If you're planning to visit Barcelona, be aware of COVID-19, safety, and weather-related advisories.
- Keep reading for important details as you plan your trip to Barcelona, Spain.
- Visit Insider's hub for travel guides, tips, and recommendations .
I live in Barcelona and traveled to the US and back multiple times throughout the pandemic.
My biggest piece of advice if you're planning to make the same trip right now is this: double-check all the latest travel mandates, and then check them again.
The rules are fast evolving, and even amid easing restrictions, it's important to have all the necessary documents in order ahead of time.
And COVID-19 isn't the only scenario you should come prepared for. Like with any travel to a foreign country, it's important to be aware of your surroundings. Keep reading for my tips on making your trip to Barcelona a safe and successful one.
Traveling to Barcelona during COVID-19
Currently, I find things to be fairly relaxed in the city. You do not need to show proof of vaccination to enter any establishment or when checking into a hotel and masks are no longer required indoors. The government, however, is still evaluating requiring face masks on all public transport.
Before flying to Barcelona (or anywhere in Spain), US citizens must show proof of vaccination (and proof of a booster if it's been more than nine months since the vaccination) or a COVID-19 recovery certificate. Visit the US Embassy in Spain website for specific details, as requirements may change.
Additionally, all US citizens (regardless of age) traveling from the United States to Spain must complete a Spain Travel Health form: Visit the Spain Travel Health portal or download the SpTH app in Google Play Store or iTunes App Store. Upon completion, a QR code will be generated, which you need to present before boarding your flight from the US (on my multiple trips between the two countries, I had to show it both at check-in and at the gate).
Related stories
It's a long, tedious form, taking about 10 minutes to complete, so be sure to do it ahead of time; you'll need to know the flight number and your seat assignment. I take a screenshot of the QR code to keep handy when it's scanned at the Barcelona airport, just before baggage claim.
Getting a COVID-19 test in Barcelona for your return flight
As of publishing, a negative antigen test is required no more than one day before travel by air into the US. There are many testing sites in Barcelona but all require an advance appointment.
I use Democratest , which has locations around the city center and the cheapest prices I've found: 25 euros for an antigen test. You'll get the results in an hour (usually less) via email, but you'll need to get them printed out before going to the airport. You must bring your passport to the appointment.
If it's a holiday in Catalonia or Spain, many testing centers will be closed. In a pinch, you can schedule an antigen test at the airport , Terminal 1; it's open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., even on holidays, and the cost is 30 euros. They will print the results for you.
I recommend booking your appointment well ahead of time to ensure you have a spot; testing sites can get very busy during peak travel times and in the summer months.
How to stay safe in Barcelona
While there's very little violent crime in Barcelona, here are my top tips for keeping you and your valuables safe.
Don't carry important documents on your person when you go out. You don't need to show your passport or vaccination certificate to enter bars or restaurants, or when you're paying for items at a store, so leave them at the hotel (preferably locked in the safe). Take a photo of your passport and vaccination records to keep on your phone, just in case.
Bring the right kind of bag or purse and be vigilant. A cross-body bag or purse, preferably with a zipper, or both a zipper and snap, is best for deterring pickpockets. If you have a backpack, position it on the front of your body, especially when you're in the Metro. Don't ever hang a bag on the back of a chair; keep it on your person at all times. Don't carry your wallet in your back pocket.
Be smart about your smartphone. Consider buying a cord that tethers your phone to your bag or a lanyard or crossbody phone strap. If you don't have one of these and are navigating the city using Google Maps, rather than looking at your phone, I suggest switching to the app's voice navigation function and using earbuds.
Don't leave valuables unattended on Barcelona's beaches. Take turns going in the water, or bring a waterproof bag for your valuables.
Avoid certain areas late at night . The famous pedestrian thoroughfare of La Rambla, especially the end closest to the harbor, and the neighborhood of El Raval, just to the west of La Rambla, can become unsavory as the night wears on. Be sure to take a taxi back to your hotel.

THE CITIZEN PARK
The park is one of the largest green spaces in Barcelona, with more than 17 hectares, next to the Sierra de Collserola.
The park is located in the district of Gracia, between the neighborhoods of La Salud, Vallcarca-Penitents and El Coll, and borders on Carmelo.
The regulated tourist area occupies only a small part of the park; the rest are nature spaces and leisure areas of free access for all.
Beyond the architectural heritage, the park constitutes a reserve of nature, gardens and biodiversity in the center of the city.
The Park in the territory
The park in the urban plot, the zoning of the parc.
