Tiny Little Changes

Trip Drinks Review: Is This Botanical Beverage Worth It?

Trip Drinks

Right now, I suspect I am an advertiser’s dream when it comes to soft drinks – especially anything with interesting added ingredients and health benefits. I no longer drink alcohol , so am always in the market for interesting new “grown up drinks” – which is why I’ve already reviewed so many for this site.

As is often the case, I discovered Trip’s range of “CBD Infused” drinks via a targeted ad on Facebook. I was intrigued enough to put in an order, and in this Trip Drinks review, I let you know my views on the whole range.

I’m always excited to try out new drinks, but I only tend to order them more than once if they really impress – especially as so many new products are coming out at the moment.

To find out whether Trip Drinks got a second order from me, you’ll have to read on.

NOTE: I’ve now also written a Trip CBD Oil review .

What Are Trip Drinks?

Trip Drinks is a range of healthy soft drinks infused with CBD, and a range of natural botanicals including lemon balm and ginseng. Although it’s a relatively new range, it has gathered considerable momentum already, with positive praise from the likes of Forbes, Vogue and The Guardian.

Sold as a product that can help you to “find your calm amidst the every day chaos,” the drinks are among many products currently hitting the market that incorporate natural, herbal ingredients that have various health and anti-anxiety benefits.

Trip CBD infused peach and ginger drink

What is In Trip Drinks?

Trip drinks have a base of water and natural fruit juice concentrates. They’re naturally sweetened with steviol, an ingredient many health-conscious people (myself included) prefer to chemicals like aspartame and sucralose.

The interesting part is the added botanical ingredients, and the inclusion of a small dose of CBD (cannabidiol) – a non-psychoactive ingredient derived from the cannabis plant.

CBD is all the rage these days, with many fans (again, myself included), who report benefits such as a greater sense of calm, reduced anxiety, and less pain and inflammation.

Here’s a quick run-down of all the botanicals included in Trip drinks, along with their perceived benefits. I must emphasise that these are benefits they are widely thought to have. I’m not making any medical claims here – this is a personal blog, not a scientific paper.

CBD : This increasingly popular ingredient is a massive deal these days. It’s often used as a natural remedy for anxiety, for lots of pain-related conditions such as arthritis and neuropathy, and to relieve nausea. It does NOT get you “high,” in case you’re wondering! To find out more about it, check out this guide from Harvard University .

Lemon Balm: Lemon balm is from the mint family, and people have long believed it to promote relaxation and to aid in many ailments. These include headaches, nausea and menstrual cramps. This Healthline article discusses several studies into those claims.

Lemon Balm Plant

Ginseng: This is a supplement that has been used for centuries, and is particularly popular in China and Korea. It is thought to help with everything from cognitive function to blood sugar levels. That said, there is limited medical evidence for these long-believed claims.

L-Theanine : L-Theanine is an amino acid that naturally occurs in tea. It’s said to be good for memory and clarity, and many people believe it’s a good compliment to caffeine. I am one of those people, as it seems to “take the edge” off the jittery buzz. (L Theanine is also found in Three Spirit’s Non Alcoholic Spirits range – reviewed here – where I have particularly noticed that positive effect).

Chamomile: Most of us are familiar with chamomile tea. It’s a hugely popular ingredient to promote sleep and relaxation.

Turmeric: The only Trip drink that includes turmeric is the peach and ginger variety. As well as giving the drink a striking orange colour, turmeric is seen (particularly in India) as a medicinal herb, used for everything from hayfever to depression and itching. As with the ginseng, there isn’t yet much in the way of peer-reviewed evidence to support these beliefs.

Trip Drinks Review: Flavour By Flavour

In a moment, we’ll move on to the “effects” of Trip drinks, and discuss whether you notice any tangible benefits. But first, let’s look at something that’s arguably more important – what they taste like.

Trip Lemon Basil Drink

This particular drink provides exactly what it says on the can. It’s probably the most “herbal” of the three in terms of both aroma and flavour. It tastes of lemon, and it tastes of basil – so I guess we can say “mission accomplished!”

The flavour is in perfect balance, and it’s an agreeable herbal taste, not a nasty Jägermeister-like herbal taste!

I’m not convinced it would appeal to everybody, but I enjoy it very much.

VERDICT: 8/10

Trip Elderflower Mint

Until I tried Trip drinks, I had no idea that I would enjoy a drink that tastes – frankly – like Wrigley’s Spearmint chewing gum. It really does!

That may sound a bit odd, but it’s genuinely not a bad thing. I have to confess that I can’t taste much in the way of elderflower, but the overall flavour is really good. This is probably my favourite of the three.

VERDICT: 9/10

Trip Peach Ginger

The Peach Ginger is the one that includes turmeric, and as you can see from the photo near the top of this review, it gives the drink a very bright orange colour.

Flavour-wise it’s a strong ginger, but not an overly spicy ginger. It’s very refreshing, although the ginger overpowers the peach a little. It’s a mouth-filling taste, with a fresh aroma. I don’t know if it’s possible for something to “smell healthy,” but it kind of does.

Trip Drinks

I’m going to have to disappoint the hedonists reading this by saying that if you’re expecting Trip drinks to blast you into the stratosphere, you’re going to be sorely disappointed!

Despite the “Trip” name, these are very much a wellbeing product, and any “effects” will be subtle at best. Let’s be realistic, folks, they sell these in Sainsbury’s!

However, I like to test products throughly, and with an open mind. With that ethos, I drank several of these before creating my Trip Drinks review. I did so at times when I could have a good chance to really focus in on whether I “noticed anything,” such as when I was about to sit down for a period of uninterrupted work.

I first want to talk about the CBD. Something I’ve not revealed until now is that I am a regular (daily) user of CBD. I find it enormously helpful for my anxiety and general state of mind. I am strongly considering setting up a separate site to discuss it, and to review the products I use.

With that in mind, I do (for fear of sounding conceited) know a LOT about CBD. And one thing I know is that the dose of CBD needed to feel positive effects can vary wildly from person to person. I also know that – for most – the 15mg “dose” in a can of Trip is a pretty small one.

This is compounded by the bioavailability of CBD when you eat or drink it. That sounds awfully technical, but it essentially relates to how much of the substance is actually absorbed by the body. Some estimates are that it is as low as 4%.

This is why I vape my CBD, as it’s a much more “bioavailable” method of taking it. And I use much bigger doses than 15mg! That’s very much another story, but my point is that the 15mg dose in Trip (and, indeed, in almost every CBD drink on the market) is probably too low to really do much for many people.

This by no means implies that there’s anything disingenuous about the product or its marketing. All I’m saying is not to expect miracles, nor to assume CBD does nothing for you if this is the first and only such product you try.

The Other Botanical Ingredients

The other herbal ingredients in Trip are a blend intended to promote stress relief, relaxation and better digestion. I’ve tried most of them before – alone or in other products – at various times.

I have to say I was intrigued by the presence of chamomile. It’s something usually seen as a bedtime supplement, so I was concerned Trip would make me sleepy. Thankfully it didn’t.

I’ve generally been having a can of Trip mid afternoon. This is when I’d often reach for a second can of Diet Coke – a decision I frequently regret afterwards because it leaves me feeling washed-out and jittery.

Drinking Trip Lemon Basil at my Computer

Drinking Trip doesn’t suddenly make me feel “different.” It’s not like when I vape CBD, which can provide a really notable sense of calm, and a slowdown of racing thoughts. However, I do tend to feel focussed and quite “zen” after drinking Trip. It may be placebo, to an extent, but millions of people believe in these ingredients, and have done for hundreds of years.

My digestion has also been very good since I’ve been drinking these regularly. However, I should say that digestion doesn’t really give me much trouble anyway, since I quit drinking alcohol!

All in all, I have a “what’s not to like?” perception of these drinks. They taste good, they seem healthy, and they are clearly a better choice than more Diet Coke while I’m sitting at my desk.

I couldn’t swear that my focus and level of calm would be any different without them – but that goes for every supplement and health product out there!

Ingredients, Calories and Nutrition

Whenever I do a drinks review, I like to have a good look at the ingredients and nutritional information.

There’s nothing in Trip Drinks that seriously worries me. There’s water (it doesn’t specify spring water), fruit juices from concentrates, the CBD and botanicals, and steviol glycosides as the sweetener. One addition that many of the drinks I review do without is erythritol, a flavour enhancer – just so you know!

The drinks are 20 calories per can , so not much to concern you there. They are also vegan, and have no added sugar.

One thing that’s a bit of a shame is that other than the CBD, Trip don’t tell us the quantities of the ginseng, L-Theanine etc. That’s quite common in products like this, and presumably they don’t want to give away the trade secrets. However, it does leave you wondering how “meaningful” a quantity of those ingredients you’re consuming.

Presentation

I only include a presentation section in these reviews when there’s something positive to say. While the presentation didn’t blow me away as much as when I did my review of Jukes Coridalities , the drinks do come in a nice box with a leaflet, when you buy a small mixed case. This is shown in the earlier photos.

Ethics and Eco Credentials

Trip Drinks come with 100% recyclable packaging, and everything is made in the UK.

I always find it interesting to see what these “craft” brands do to contribute to wider society. While I didn’t see anything on the website about charity initiatives or donations, the company does offer some discounts – for healthcare workers, key workers, and 18-25s.

This is a great initiative, and it follows the lead of lots of US-based CBD businesses, which are generally a little more evolved than those here in the UK.

Trip discounts

As we near the end of this Trip Drinks review, we come to the all important question of price.

As with many things, the price goes down for larger orders. If you buy a case of 24 cans, this costs £39, which works out to £1.63 per can. If you buy a pack of six (which is also available as a mix with all three flavours), this costs £14 – or £2.33 per can.

I think the pricing is well pitched – it’s not cheap, but it’s not luck-pushingly expensive either. And plenty of artisan drink makers DO push their luck on price.

Trip Drinks Coupon Codes

Use can use the following code to make savings on drinks and other products from the Trip website:

Use code AFFTRIP15 here to save 15% on spends over £50

As I said at the start of my review, the way I truly judge a product is whether I buy it again after my initial order.

Well, I’m pleased to say I’m now on my second box of Trip Drinks, and I think they’re going to end up in my permanent rotation.

As somebody who doesn’t drink alcohol, it’s nice to have some alternatives in my armoury. I’m thankful to live in a time when there are SO many options, with more coming to the marketplace all the time.

Don’t expect some earth-shattering effect from the CBD and other ingredients. If you notice anything it will be subtle, not profound. However, they do seem to make me feel rather “zen.” They also have great flavour. They are pleasantly “different,” without being too weird to be enjoyable!

Recommended.

Where To Buy Trip Drinks

Trip drinks are available across the UK, and I’ve even seen them in my local Sainsbury’s – but the easiest place to get them is on the company’s website. Pleasingly, UK shipping is free, and the company also ships internationally.

15 thoughts on “Trip Drinks Review: Is This Botanical Beverage Worth It?”

This was a great review thank you. As someone who is looking to go alcohol free it’s lovely to see drinks on offer that can replace alcohol without having to order a lemonade!

Hi Lucy, You’ll find plenty of other alcohol-free alternatives on the site too 🙂

Best wishes,

Is anyone able to tell me how much turmeric is in one drink please?

I don’t know off hand Lisa, I’m afraid, but I will look on the can next time I have some in the house!

Thank you for your detailed review. It is really helpful to have such detailed insight. I do have an issue with their discount policy. I find the notion that only certain workers are “key” distasteful. Why are not factory workers processing food, or bus drivers, or indeed anyone providing a service key and thus entitled to a discount. The fact that they offer NHS workers and healthcare workers a 50% discount tells me the drinks are way over priced for everyone. Again thanks for your review on the content of the these drinks.

I am a recovering alcoholic.. are these safe for me, as obviously concerned about the CPD .. thank you as don’t think these are mind altering, plus it could be a good promotion 😉thank you

Hi Pat – I’m reluctant to give you a firm answer on that. I’ve been sober for over two years, and drink these as well as alcohol free beers and all kinds of similar things. But I know that some alcoholics find NA beers triggering – so no two people are the same. I don’t honestly THINK Trip would cause you a problem, and it certainly doesn’t make me feel “altered” – but everybody’s different. 🙂

Hi Ben, excellent article, thank you.

I’m interested in starting with CBD and your mention of a vaping solution intrigued me… Please can you let me know any recommendations you have in this area?

Hi Andy – If you’re in the UK, I’d suggest having a look at products from HighKind and Orange County CBD.

Thanks for this review. I’ll probably give these Trip drinks a trial based on what you’ve written. Thanks also for your other reviews. Reading them has eaten up a big chunk of my afternoon! I’ve been on the wagon since February and tried a few options: red wine (both went down well – down the sink that is); no alc gin (Gordon’s is OK but it’s just a herby drink really. I shove lots of ice, some fresh mint and tonic in there and pretend it’s a mojito). Beer is the most successful. I notice you didn’t mention (though you’ve probably sampled) Adnam’s Ghost Ship 0.5 (full flavoured with a slight citrus finish) and my favourite so far, Erdinger Alkoholfrei 0.5 (very much like a pilsner so softer on the palate). Thanks again for your encouraging, informative and well-written pieces.

Hi Jeff – thanks for reading and glad you’ve enjoyed my articles!

Yes, I’m familiar with the Ghost Ship and like it a lot, especially on the rare occasions when I find it on draft 🙂 The Erdinger is good too. Brookly Special Effects is one I’m particularly enjoying right now, along with Clear Head, from Bristol Brewery, which also donates money to mental health charities.

All the best, Ben

Ps. For non alcoholic gin, my wife and I have both been impressed with Tanqueray.

My husband is really struggling with anxiety at the moment and I was hoping these drinks might be the answer for him. However, you said about the dose not really being enough for most people. Vape isn’t something he would consider, are there any other alternatives that could be more successful?

I think anxiety is a huge problem for many people at the moment, especially those of us living through these grim times in the UK.

You could maybe start him off with Trip’s CBD oil , which will give a much stronger effect, and he will be able to experiment with the dosage. Here’s my affiliate link 🙂

It’s worth trying to use the code AFFTRIPCASH – which should give you 15% off spends over £35.

I’ve found CBD hugely helpful for anxiety – if nothing else it can help with sleep. However, it’s not a miracle cure. I’ve had some bad anxiety myself recently that CBD hasn’t been enough to fix – but I think it’s largely situational and being surrounded by such doom and gloom. It’s certainly worth a try!

All the best to you both.

Can you drink trip if you’re on warfarin

Hi Richard,

You would need to check that with your doctor. I cannot provide medical advice and I’m almost certain any CBD company would say the same.

Cannabidiol-based drinks: the price is rather high, but will you be?

CBDs: are they the elusive hangover-free drinks?

Cannabidiols (CBDs), the non-psychoactive element of cannabis, are legal and widely sold in drinks. Do they work, could they replace alcohol – and are they even drinkable? We test five candidates ...

W alk past almost any chemist these days, and you’ll see a windowful of CBD-based products, and demand for the stuff is now so great – particularly over the last stressful few months – that it has migrated into drinks as disparate as as soft drinks, tea and gin. And it’s legal.

CBD (short for cannabidiol) is the non-psychoactive component of cannabis, and is claimed to have significant health benefits, including pain relief and the reduction of stress and anxiety. The labelling often features words such as “calm”, “harmony” and “balance”, although some brand names, such as Trip and Colorado High, suggest something altogether more stimulating.

So do CBD drinks contain enough to have a therapeutic effect? Possibly, if you drink more than one of them, or supplement them with a shot, drops or a cream. The Food Standards Agency recommends a maximum 70mg a day , but regular users I’ve spoken to consumed more like 100-200mg, which is quite impressive when many drinks contain as little as 10mg a serving. Like alcohol and caffeine, the effect can differ from one person to the next, and the only product that had a marked effect on me was Kannaswiss’s C3 shot (£35 for a pack of seven), which was packed with other ingredients and really did leave me feeling unusually sharp and focused .

Taste is another issue. The basic taste of hemp is quite earthy and vegetal, which isn’t the biggest draw, so many new brands, such as Trip , Intune and Gibson’s Goodology , are understandably focusing on flavour. As you can see from today’s panel (below), these products don’t come cheap, even though CBD-based drinks are not currently taxed like alcoholic ones. And if one of the reasons you’re feeling stressed is financial, spending £10 a day on CBD drinks and shots isn’t going to work.

That said, the demand is certainly out there. When Silent Pool put its Colorado High Gin online six weeks ago, it sold 800 bottles in two days, despite the £50 price tag, while Hatter’s became Holland & Barrett’s fastest-selling tea earlier this year, shifting more than 25,000 boxes in the first month. Supermarkets have yet to come on board, but CBD drinks are already on sale in such respectable emporia as Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

The great commercial opportunity, of course, is that CBD drinks can be piggybacked on to the equally buoyant alcohol-free market. An adult soft drink that makes you feel good without giving you a hangover, and that’s the holy grail.

Five CBD-based drinks to try

Hatter’s Hemp Chamomile Tea

Hatter’s CBD-infused chamomile tea £19.99 for 20 bags(with a second bag currently on offer for 1p), Holland & Barrett . Definitely more interesting than a standard chamomile tea (50% of this is hemp) with a pleasantly soporific effect. The lemongrass and rosehip tea is also nice.

Trip Lemon Basil

Trip Lemon Basil £2.39 a 250ml can Planet Organic , £2.99 nabino.com , £19.99 for six from drink-trip.com . My favourite of the Trip range, a soft, sparkling drink that contains 15mg CBD per can, as well as L-theanine, ginseng, lemon balm and rooibos. Like a pleasantly herby lemonade.

Gibson’s Goodology Jasmine Tea and Rhubarb

Gibson’s Goodology Jasmine Tea and Rhubarb £4.95 a 250ml can, Hic! (or £14.85 for 3). Developed by one of London’s leading mixologists, Hide’s Oskar Kinberg , this tea-based drink has the highest level of CBD per serve (25mg a can), and also the best, most natural fruit flavours of any of the drinks I tried. Really delicious.

Silent Pool Distillers Colorado High CBD gin

Silent Pool Distillers Colorado High CBD Gin £50 for 50cl silentpooldistillers.com (or £59 in a bundle with tonic ) , 40%. There’s enough CBD in this gin (10mg per 25ml serve) to make it cloudy and give it a strong, earthy, almost spicy flavour. Combined with the recommended Green Stem CBD-infused citrus tonic, a large G&T would be about 26/7mg. Judging by the demand, it clearly appeals, but it’s super-pricey for a 50cl bottle, and I have to say I prefer the basic Silent Pool gin .

Doña Sofia Gin & Tonic

Doña Sofia Gin & Tonic £12 for 6 250ml cans dona-sofia.com , 5%. More like a cocktail than G&T, but with an attractive, marmaladey, bitter orange flavour offsetting the relativelyhigh sugar content (15.75g a can). One of the only products to admit the CBD content might vary by +/-15% (they say it’s 10mg), which could make it as low as 8.5mg or as high as 11.5mg. Good value at this launch price.

What is Triple Sec? Here's all you need to know

Kris Barton Author

What is Triple Sec? Triple Sec is a style of Orange Liqueur. It’s actually considered a digestif but is now typically used in Cocktails.

We recommend:

Cointreau (70cl)

Triple Sec is an ingredient you may see in a cocktail recipe and think, what is Triple Sec? Don’t worry. A lot of people ask themselves that same question.

In this article, we’re going to take a deeper look at Triple Sec and answer all the questions you have (and probably a whole lot more).

A picture of a Cointreau bottle cast against a pink background for the What is Triple Sec article.

What does Triple Sec Mean?

As mentioned above, Triple Sec is a style of Orange Liqueur.

In French, the word ‘Sec’ is directly translated to mean ‘dry’ and so ‘Triple Sec’ is thought to be a reference to the fact the Orange Liqueur is Triple Distilled when made.

However, other reasonings range from it

Want to know a little bit more about it? Let’s take a deeper look!

The History of Triple Sec

The first Triple Sec was invented by Jean-Baptiste and Josephine Combier in Saumur, France in 1834 and on the back of the popularity of the Orange Liqueur, the Combier company was established.

Jean-Baptiste and Josephine Combier operated straight out of their kitchen where they shared the dream of inventing a new Liqueur which flavour was perfectly balanced.

It’s said they worked for years perfecting the flavour and their quest for perfection ended in 1834 with the invention of Triple Sec.

The Combier company expanded in other liqueurs and is still around today.

Other Orange Liqueurs

The Combier Triple Sec is generally thought to be the first Triple Sec made, but it certainly wasn’t the last.

Many other different types of Orange Liqueur are now widely available.

These include:

  • De Kuyper Triple Sec
  • Volare Triple Sec
  • Bols Triple Sec
  • Iseo Triple Sec
  • Soiree Triple Sec

Emergence of Cointreau

Cointreau is the Combier Triple Sec’s oldest rival.

Edouard-Jean and Adolphe Cointreau first opened the doors to their distillery in 1849. They saw a rising trend in the Liqueur industry and pivoted their family business away from cake-making.

In 1875 Edouard had noted that consumers were showing a distinct interest for Oranges, which at the time were very rare and extremely precious.

Seeing the value, he experimented with different recipes until he developed the Orange Triple Sec Liqueur we now know as Cointreau.

It’s widely considered that Cointreau is actually the most popular brand of Triple Sec on the market today.

So, is Triple Sec the Same as Cointreau?

A very popular question when it comes to Triple Sec is: is Triple Sec the same as Cointreau?

Let’s run through it:

  • Cointreau and Combier are both varieties of Triple Sec Orange Liqueur.
  • Both types of Triple Sec have slightly different recipes.
  • Combier Triple Sec is 30 plus years older than Cointreau, but today Cointreau is the more popular brand.
  • Cointreau has an alcohol volume of 40%, compared to 25% of Combier Triple Sec.

Get quick and easy cocktail recipes delivered directly to your inbox. For Free.

What is Triple Sec Made of?

According to the Combier website , Triple Sec is made of:

Sun-dried orange peels from the West Indies, local spices from the south of France, alcohol from France’s northwest, and secret ingredients from the Loire Valley – a formula that became the world’s first triple sec.

Much like Campari , the majority of the ingredients of the original Triple Sec are shrouded in secrecy but we do know that the liqueur was triple distilled in creation and boasts to the made of all-natural ingredients.

How is Triple Sec Made?

According to Diffords Guide , Triple Sec is usually based on neutral spirit made from sugar beet. Then, Orange Peel is bathed in the neutral spirit and then redistilled. Next, the concoction is blended with even more of the neutral spirit, water and sugar beet.

How Much Alcohol is in Triple Sec?

The alcohol volume of Triple Sec ranges anywhere between 15% and 40%.

Let’s take a look at how much alcohol volume each of the most popular brands of Triple Sec mentioned above contain:

  • Combier Triple Sec has an alcohol volume of 25%.
  • Cointreau has an alcohol volume of 40%.
  • Volare Triple Sec has an alcohol volume of 20%.
  • De Kuyper Triple Sec has an alcohol volume of 40%.
  • Bols Triple Sec has an alcohol volume of 38%.
  • Iseo Triple Sec has an alcoholic volume of 15%.
  • Soiree Triple Sec has an alcoholic volume of 20%.

Cocktails with Triple Sec

Because of Triple Sec’s rich, dry orange taste, it’s a perfect alcohol to mix into delicious cocktails.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular cocktails with Triple Sec Orange Liqueur.

Breaking news, disney restaurant is first theme-park location to win michelin star: ‘magic rarely seen these days’.

The Magic Kingdom now has Michelin magic, too.

Victoria & Albert’s at Disney Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is the first theme-park eatery to earn a Michelin star.

Victoria & Albert's has been awarded a Michelin star — a first for a theme park.

The restaurant at the “Happiest Place on Earth” offers two menus — a standard bill of fare at $295 and the chef’s tasting menu, which runs $395 per person.

The optional wine or zero-proof pairings start at $155 per guest.

The restaurant also offers water lists, an ornate coffee and tea service and a rare collection of more than 500 wines from 35 regions.

A standard bill of fare rings up at $295, and the chef’s tasting menu is $395 per person.

The Orlando spot has a strict semi-formal/formal dress code and doesn’t allow children under 10.

And you can’t buy a Fast Pass for this location: a seat at the fine-dining oasis “is by no means an easy reservation,” according to the Michelin guide.

If you can’t make your exclusive reservation, a $100-per-person fee is applied for cancellations within five days of the reservation.

Michelin's assessment says that the reward for a reservation "is a kind of magic rarely seen these days."

“The setting is intimate, and the pacing is that of a leisurely, three-hour waltz orchestrated by a gracious brigade of veteran servers,” according to Michelin, which noted that the kitchen is helmed by chef Matthew Sowers, who “cooks with contemporary verve and draws on influences spanning from Asia to the Nordics.”

Although the Michelin judges approved of Victoria & Albert’s, many people online disagreed after learning of the high price tag.

Disney World guests blasted the theme park for jacking up the prices at its most expensive restaurant when it reopened in 2022 after the heights of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’m sure it’s a great experience and super fancy, but no thanks. I’m out. No chance I’m spending $300 a person to eat some food,” one user  wrote on Reddit,  referring to the cheapest seven-course tasting menu option.

“Crazy overpriced,” another user griped. “Michelin star restaurants in NYC don’t even cost that much (except the very best, like Eleven Madison Park, which is ‘only’ $335).”

Post-pandemic, Disney raised prices across the board,  hiking the cost of admission, parking tickets, merchandise and food.

Not everyone is thrilled, though. “Crazy overpriced,” one person griped.

Customers griped in a  recent study that the Mouse House has “lost its magic”  as new data showed that tickets to Disney World and Disneyland theme parks have  climbed more than 3,871% in the past 50 years  — dwarfing increases in visitors’ wages, as well as the cost of rent and gas.

However, the Michelin judges disagreed with Victoria & Albert’s critics, claiming that it offers “a kind of magic rarely seen these days.”

Local Flavors: where to eat and drink in Florence

Angelo Zinna

Apr 29, 2024 • 5 min read

Copy of LOCAL FLAVOR - Title

Taste the best of Florence's flavors with this local's guide to where to eat and drink (pictured Il Vegetariano, a popular local lunch spot) © Angelo Zinna

Food is big business in Florence , to the extent that the city council introduced a law limiting the opening of new bars and restaurants in the UNESCO-listed city center.

This measure was in response to concerns about the excess of tourist-focused dining options there, exacerbated by the tripling of restaurants in just 10 years between 2005 and 2015.

In the center of the Renaissance city, there is approximately one dining establishment for every 31 residents. While the array of options seems endless, Italians, generally being creatures of habit, tend to gravitate towards familiar foods. Lengthy queues outside TikTok-promoted venues are met with disapproval, and terms like "traditional," "authentic," and "genuine" have been so overused when describing new restaurants that they've lost their meaning.

For Florentines, no culinary novelty will outshine a reputation built over the years. We stick to what we know and are generally skeptical of everything else. Here are my tried and trusted places to eat and drink.

Close-up of pastries and the till at a traditional coffee bar and breakfast spot in Florence

The day starts with a shot of bitter espresso – the first of many – at the nearest cafe. In my case, that’s Bar Piccioli, a dimly lit, old-school patisserie in Borgo Ognissanti.

Italian breakfast is quick. Many foreigners who arrive in Italy for the first time are often surprised that a sweet pastry and espresso, typically enjoyed standing up at the bar, are what locals consume to kickstart their day. But pastries can go a long way if done right, and Claudio, Piccioli’s owner, has been serving exquisite cornetti (croissants) and other morning delicacies fresh out of the oven for decades.

The daily changing variety of crunchy croissants – filled with anything from zabaglione (egg and Marsala custard) to pistacchio – are a safe bet, but depending on when you visit you may also find maritozzi (brioche buns) filled with whipped cream, custard and pine nuts, shortbread, and seasonal specialties such as rice frittelle (fried bites), prepared in early spring.

A group of elderly people sit at an outdoor terrace at Circolo Rondinella enjoying coffee and views of Florence

I would love to feature Circolo Rondinella in every category of my list. It’s a place where you can easily spend the whole day, from breakfast to dinner. There's something special about sitting, coffee in hand, on the faux grass in the outdoor area, which overlooks the Arno River and the 14th-century Torrino di Santa Rosa. Here, you'll often find groups of elderly men gathering daily for a glass of wine and engaging in lively games of briscola, peppered with good-natured swearing.

In terms of food, don’t expect anything especially refined here. Coffee is your standard espresso shot and lunch is a changing menu of seasonal pastas and main courses. That’s the draw of Rondinella – not trying hard to be special in a city where hundreds of restaurants and cafes compete for people’s attention.

Circoli , or social clubs, are a cornerstone of Tuscan culture and are found scattered throughout the region. These clubs typically revolve around a cultural activity. Circolo Rondinella served as the former headquarters for the local calcio storico historic football team, a fact evidenced by the collection of memorabilia on display. They've long been a place for members of the community to come together and build ties. Rondinella stands out as one of the few circoli still operating in central Florence.

When you visit, remember to order at the bar and pay in cash.

Close-up of an aubergine-based lunch dish at a traditional Italian trattoria

These days, most restaurants offer at least a couple of plant-based dishes on their menu, but eating in meat-centric Tuscany can get a bit repetitive for vegetarians. Il Vegetariano stands out with a daily changing selection of a dozen meat-free specialties inspired by local recipes and prepared with ingredients sourced directly from Florence’s surroundings. Look out for creative dishes like potato and black cabbage gateau with parmesan fondue.

Il Vegetariano, found behind the hand-carved wooden sign marking the entrance, has been operating since the early 1980s. It pioneered vegetarian eating before it was cool in a city known for its T-bone steak. This is not just a good vegetarian restaurant — it’s a good restaurant overall, as the flow of regulars sitting amid quirky decor shows. Don’t forget to try the cakes.

Close-up shots of wine bottles in a Florentine wine bar

If you love your wine with a bit of background music — vinyl spinning on the turntable— and haven’t yet fallen for Aperol’s aperitivo marketing, Vineria Sonora is your wine-filled, pre-dinner drinking spot. This funky enoteca (wine bar) on Via degli Alfani is known for its impressive selection of natural, organic and biodynamic wines from independent Italian producers, and its weekend DJ sets. Stop by to start your night with unique wines, from an orange Trebbiano from Tuscany to a sparkling Pinot Noir from Northern Italy.

L: Plate of grilled artichokes. R: A group of men sit at a table in an Italian restaurant

By 9pm, after a few glasses of wine, you might find yourself ready for something more substantial. Just around the corner from Vineria Sonora is Trattoria Accadì , the perfect place to continue your evening. The trattoria has a cozy feel with dark wood furniture and a hand-written menu featuring Tuscan classics including fried artichokes and hearty, traditional stews such as peposo (with spiced beef) and ribollita (with seasonal vegetables). Plus, you’ll find a few unexpected Japanese touches in the old-school decor, a nod to the chef, Toshifumi Mitsubiki, whose passion for Italian cuisine led him to move to the opposite side of the world and open Accadì.

Interiors of an Italian late-night bar with neon signs, bikes hanging from walls and customers chatting over drinks

Late-night drinking happens on the south side of the Arno River and, more specifically, in Piazza Tasso, where Circolo Aurora serves its cocktails under Florence’s ancient city walls. Removed from the crowded Borgo San Frediano and Piazza Santo Spirito – where most bars in this part of the city are found – Circolo Aurora draws locals to its bar with regular live jazz nights and open mic sessions. Choose your drinks from a list in a vintage photo album with actual vintage photos, a touch that is very much in line with the nostalgia-inducing decor of the bar, comprising '80s action figures scattered around the room, old advertising posters and a vintage bike hanging from the wall. Since the pandemic, Florence’s live music scene has experienced a sharp decline, but Aurora keeps culture alive, especially during summer months when tables spill on the square and music can be heard flowing from the bar.

Trip Peach Ginger. The Peach Ginger is the one that includes turmeric, and as you can see from the photo near the top of this review, it gives the drink a very bright orange colour.
