Gang of Four Announces 2022 North American Tour

By Allison Hussey

Gang of Four

Gang of Four have announced a run of North American tour dates in support of their 77-81 box set, performing songs from that era. They’ll start in Minneapolis on March 1 before concluding in Vancouver near the end of the month. See the dates below.

The band’s lineup will include founders Jon King and Hugo Burnham, with David Pajo joining the group on guitar. Bassist Dave Allen will not appear, citing personal reasons, though he “remains an essential and vital part of the band,” according to a press release. 1980s-era bassist Sara Lee will return to tour with the group instead.

Following the death of founding guitarist Andy Gill in February 2020, the band issued two EPs featuring some of his final recordings. Tom Morello, Serj Tankian, Helmet, Warpaint, and more contributed to a tribute album in Gill’s honor released in May 2021.

Gang of Four Announce 2022 North American Tour

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Gang of Four announced they are embarking on a tour of North America next year, their first since co-founder and lead guitarist Andy Gill died in early 2020.

Performing music of their record-breaking catalog from ’77-’83, the post-punkers will hit tracks off Entertainment! (1979), Solid Gold (1981), and Songs of the Free (1982). The tour’s line-up will not include founding member Dave Allen due to personal reasons, but Jon King and Hugo Burnham will be alongside bassist Sara Lee and guitarist David Pajo, who will replace Gill.

Tickets for the tour go on sale Friday, Oct. 22 on Gang of Four’s website.

Gill died last February due to pneumonia and multiple organ failure, yet his widow suggested it was because of the coronavirus. An all-star compilation featuring Tom Morello, Serj Tankian, Flea, John Frusciante, IDLES and that paid tribute to Gill and Gang of Four was released earlier this year.

“I am excited to be back out next Spring with two of my dearest Gangsters and a new one,” Hugo Burnham said. “Jon, Sara, and I cannot wait to make stylin’ loud noises with the fierce and fabulous David Pajo. Bring your hearts and your earplugs.”

Gang of Four Announce 2022 North American Tour

Gang of Four have announced a new 2022 tour, their first dates since the passing of founding member Andy Gill last year.

Scheduled to take place across North America in March, the trek will find the band highlighting songs from their 1977-1983 releases, including ’79’s  Entertainment! , ’81’s  Solid Gold , and ’82’s  Songs of the Free . Much of this material was featured on the recently released Gang of Four: 77-81 box set , part of Matador Records’ archival campaign .

Co-founding bassist Dave Allen will sit out the tour “due to personal reasons,” according to a press release, though it’s noted he “remains an essential and vital part of the band.” Filling in for Allen will be returning bassist Sara Lee, who was last with Gang of Four from 1980 to 1984. Also joining lead vocalist Jon King and drummer Hugo Burnham will be guitarist David Pajo of Slint and Papa M.

“I am excited to be back out next spring with two of my dearest Gangsters and a new one,” said Burnham in a statement. “Jon, Sara, and I cannot wait to make stylin’ loud noises with the fierce and fabulous David Pajo. Bring your hearts and your ear-plugs.”

Added King, “It’s been too long, can’t wait to get back at it, be positive, agitate for the good. Getting back together with Sara and Hugo will be wonderful and working with David P. will be a blast. A chance to bring light into the darkness.”

I didn't go. Tickets were too damn expensive. I wished that sometimes these venues you guys put out here are a bit affordable. They would have been an awesome group to enjoy because it would take me back to high school. But OFW!!!

Drain Gang 2022 world tour has well-contained chaos

By Massimo Tarridas

Posted on March 30, 2022 in Arts

gang tour 2022

Drain Gang—a collective formed in 2013 by rappers Bladee, Ecco2k and Thaiboy Digital, along with producers Whitearmor and Yung Sherman—announced their 2022 World Tour in October of last year, immediately selling out. The group is currently riding an ever-increasing wave of popularity that started around the beginning of the pandemic, when Bladee (the most prolific of them all) released the album “333,” a move from an almost parodic, glittery trap sound in the prior release “Icedancer” toward a more melodic and esoteric style. Fellow Swede Yung Lean recently gained popularity on TikTok, and by association, Drain Gang likewise grew their following. Instead of their subcultural context being that of underground rap, which is what it used to be, they are now considered hyperpop-adjacent. Also known as DG or D&G after Dolce and Gabbana, their collaborative discography includes “GTBSG” (2013), “AvP” (2016), “D&G” (2017), “Trash Island” (2019) and most recently, “Crest” (2022), released just two days before I caught their performance on March 19 at the Knockdown Center in Queens.

To start the night, accompanying act Varg2TM played a house and gabber friendly set, a very nice tone for the rest of the show. The group’s energy has always matched the pseudo-spiritual happiness of early 2000s warehouse rave culture more than the excessive materialism of trap, but nowhere has it been more evident than in their partnering with Varg2TM’s EDM set. However, as soon as the trio came on it was patently clear that the concert’s intent would not match the audience’s expectations. They began with “Western Union,” followed by the opening song from “Crest,” “The Flag Is Raised,” and from that point on, even if the setlist may seem divided between Bladee and Ecco2k,  the spotlight seemed to land too much on Ecco2k. Even though Thaiboy Digital was the least popular member on stage, he was embarrassingly underrepresented on the setlist, receiving titular attention on just 6 of the 32 tracks played.

Compounding this issue with Ecco2k was the terrible audio treatment. His voice was completely inaudible, wholly dissolving into a muddy puddle of undistinguishable bass. Ecco2k is by far the best performer of the three thanks to his dynamic and experimental stage presence, and you could tell he was singing his heart out by the veins popping in his neck, so it’s a shame that his contribution fell so flat. It was also painfully clear that everyone in attendance was truly there for Bladee, just based on the difference in energy when one of his songs began playing. His mega-hit “Be Nice 2 Me” practically made the room explode, as did “BBY” and “Thee 9 Is Up”; the difference in reaction may also be attributed to the fact that Bladee’s music is more suited for a party, which is what many concerts of this ilk are. While outwardly danceable, Ecco2k’s music and overall style may be more suited for a space that welcomes artiser performances.

Aside from that, my only other complaint is that the venue was really hot and humid,  more so than what is normally admissible for a general admission, mosh-pit type of show. The camera I brought, my little Olympus point-and-shoot, died toward the end from the sweat that hung in the air. And I’m sorry to say that memes about “drainers” not showering…feel accurate now. In terms of dress, however, the crowd was the most aesthetically diverse the DG fanbase has ever been.  Their shows used to be almost nerdy, but nowadays, there are fans dressed in head-to-toe Rick Owens or Margiela, rocking rare merchandise, and lots of newly minted Y2K emo swag like fingerless arm warmers, alongside a plethora of other subcultures. I even saw someone next to me being led around by a chain attached to a spiked collar,  wearing a mask that only had eye holes cut out. Beyond his respiratory capabilities, I was worried that while the crowd was collapsing in on itself, I would get poked by one of his spikes—and I was, and it bled, but I didn’t mind it. More than anything else, the concert was fun, with Drain Gang feeding off of an audience that consistently danced and sang along, even to classics like “Shadow Silence” and “Lovenote.”

Drain Gang is characterized by loyalty—to one another, as they’ve been together for nearly a decade now, and by their fervent fans. Before his 2019 album “E,” being an Ecco2k fan mostly meant scrounging the Internet for leaked clips for songs that would never release. Bladee fans have always eaten well, but his passion for switching sonic palettes might have shaken less dedicated listeners. Thaiboy is the most underrated, although perhaps he has objectively become less relevant as the years go by. But together, and especially with a post-pandemic influx of public adoration, DG gives a thoroughly electric live show that I’ve been waiting for what feels like forever to attend.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attends Gang of Youths gig, skols beer to crowd applause

The Prime Minister took in Gang of Youths' intimate tour wrap-up show at Sydney's Enmore Theatre

Anthony Albanese, Gang of Youths' Dave Le'aupepe

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended Gang of Youths ‘ intimate acoustic show at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney last night (August 22), getting cheered on by patrons as he downed a beer in the front row of the venue’s balcony seating.

Just a few hours after attending a meeting with the Inner West Labor team in his electorate of Grayndler, Albanese was spotted quietly enjoying the band’s tour-closing gig alongside Minister for the Arts Tony Burke.

Recalling the appearances that former Labor PM Bob Hawke would make at cricket matches in his later years, Albanese was applauded by the audience as he proceeded to skol a beer while looking over the balcony. See that moment below:

Albanese has long been an avid music lover, having guest hosted ABC’s Rage and performed multiple DJ sets at events prior to becoming Prime Minister. He was introduced onstage by Jimmy Barnes at this year’s edition of Bluesfest in the lead-up to the federal election, and was publicly congratulated by Billy Bragg following his win.

Last night’s show marked the final date of Gang of Youths’ Australian tour in support of third album ‘Angel in Realtime’ . Frontman Dave Le’aupepe played multiple songs solo – including a cover of Colin Hay ‘s ‘I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You’ – and the band were joined by Gretta Ray for ‘The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows’.

The Australian leg of the band’s world tour kicked off late last month and included arena shows in Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne.

The band also curated and headlined two editions of their own festival, A More Perfect Union. Those took place in Hobart – where they were joined by the likes of Arlo Parks , Cub Sport and Ray – and Sandstone Point, which featured a line-up that included Matt Corby , Middle Kids , Budjerah and more.

Gang of Youths were also set to play a pair of New Zealand shows this month, but both were postponed , saying in a statement that the decision was “necessary to maintain the health of the band”.

This photographer has documented Southern California’s street gang culture for 40 years

On a rainy March evening, a group of roughly a hundred people huddled inside the Eastern Projects art gallery in Chinatown for the opening of “Un-Rehearsed,” the first solo show for photographer Merrick Morton, on display until May 18.

Adorning the walls of the space are more than 100 images spanning a 40-year trajectory— selections from his travels in Mexico and Cuba, and stills from various films where he worked as on-set photographer. The bulk of the art, however, focuses on a subject Morton has become deeply associated with: Southern California gang life.

Many of these stills also appear on “Clique: West Coast Portraits From the Hood, 1980-1996,” a glossy, 224-page monograph set to be released by independent publisher Hat & Beard Press later this spring.

One photograph features an older couple standing on the porch of their home as the lifeless body of a drive-by shooting victim lies on the sidewalk. Another shows a gang member from Barrio Logan Heights in San Diego awaiting treatment at an area hospital after being stabbed. Other prints showcase cliques of young Latino and Black men hanging out, or homegirls embracing each other.

“WS 18th Street,” Pico Union, 1982

Born in 1955 and raised in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley, the soft-spoken Morton says his interest in chronicling street life began after a visit with John M. Valadez , the L.A.-based realist muralist and painter who was instrumental in the 1970s Chicanx art movement.

“I’m thinking, ‘I have to photograph [them]’,” he said of the cholos and cholas featured in Valadez’s artwork.

Morton, who is white, did not have a direct connection to these communities. He began calling probation officers after learning from a friend that they could be his way in. “I told them I was working on a documentary photography essay on Los Angeles street gangs,” he recalled. Eventually, he was assigned to Gerald Ivory, who introduced him to his parolees, mainly members of the Maravilla gang in East L.A. In 1981, Morton began photographing them at the Obregon Park recreation center, where he had set up a portable studio.

Morton says he and Ivory would “hit the streets,” recording interviews with various gangs throughout the ‘80s. Their work “was never sanctioned by the L.A. County Probation Department,” he said.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

“My dad said this guy just showed up with a camera, wanting to document neighborhoods in L.A.,” said Breanna Quintero, who attended the show’s opening. Her father grew up in Carson and was photographed by Morton in the early ‘80s at Victoria Park.

“People have to realize that kids from the neighborhood, like my dad, didn’t have cameras because they couldn’t afford them. So, I’m thankful that Merrick got to photograph him; this is a piece of how I grew up,” added Quintero. “These pictures brought his stories to life.”

It didn’t take long for Morton to be known as “the guy” chronicling gang life, thanks in large part to his quiet demeanor and knowing when to not overstep.

“As an observer, I start on the outside and then wait until I’m granted access,” he said. “I’m not going aimlessly into somewhere trying to take over. I think to me, it’s about respect. If you show [it], they’ll respect you.”

In 1984, Morton began freelancing for L.A. Weekly, a gig that would change his life. His work at the alternative weekly caught the eye of Taylor Hackford and Luis Valdez, the producer and director-screenwriter of “La Bamba,” the iconic 1986 Chicanx film about the life and untimely death of musician Ritchie Valens.

A younger man stands next to and put his arm around an older man's shoulders.

“[Hackford] liked the work that I was shooting in Mexico at the time, outside of the gangs, so I was hired on that,” said Morton. “And for me, at the time, I was working at a camera store and not earning that much there.”

Since then, Morton has worked as on-set still photographer for more than 90 different films and television shows, including “Colors,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Fight Club,” and “Blood In Blood Out” — his work on this latter film is prominently featured in a book (also printed by Hat & Beard Press) that chronicles the making of the East Los Angeles cult classic.

Morton would distance himself from street photography in the late 1990s to work solely in the entertainment industry, only to pick it up again in 2017— he began posting his old work on Instagram, where he’s amassed nearly 70,000 followers. He says using the social media platform has allowed him to reconnect with some of his past subjects—or if they were no longer alive, with their loved ones — who have added context to his images.

One popular social media post shows two photographs of a mother and her child taken 40 years apart.

“I wouldn’t know about many of their stories without Instagram,” he says. “It’s surreal hearing about them.”

Morton intends to continue posting his work in hopes that it reaches people unfamiliar with gang life. “I am trying to provoke some type of dialogue,” he says.

“When I first went into these neighborhoods, I was instilled with this perception of violence,” Morton added. “But I quickly learned that [it’s] such a small part of these neighborhoods. It’s really all about family, culture and heritage. Hopefully, these are the stories that come out of it.”

When asked if anyone had expressed concern that his work exploited or glorified gang violence, Morton says that “it’s a fine line,” explaining that “sometimes the images are an avenue to start talking about how do we stop the killing or why are people killing each other.”

For Marcos Cazarin, who posed for Morton in 1986, the photographer’s work is not exploitative — it’s recordatory.

Three young men stand together in front of a mural of the crucifixion of Jesus

Cazarin, who was at the show opening, says the image of him posing with two friends in front of a mural of the crucifixion of Jesus is a reminder of the life he left behind— he’s in the middle in the image above, wearing the black tank top. The photograph also graces the cover of Morton’s book.

“I am a recovering addict,” he says. “Twenty-one years clean. It was a hard life for anyone growing up in that era. But I learned never to shut the backdoor. I always keep it open to remind myself where I don’t want to be again.”

gang tour 2022

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 inductees include Peter Frampton, Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige

A fter failing to even be nominated in previous years, Cher, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Kool & The Gang will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, alongside repeat nominees Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band and hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest.

In a novel move, Frampton encouraged concertgoers to vote for him during his April 14 show at The Shell in San Diego by having the QR code for the ballot projected onto the large video screen behind him on stage.

Five other artists who were also on the ballot for the first time this year did not earn enough votes to be inducted, specifically, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Sadé, Mariah Carey and Sinéad O’Connor, who died last July. Also failing to make the cut for induction were two repeat nominees — Jane’s Addiction and the hip-hop duo Erik B. & Rakim.

This year’s inductees were announced during Sunday night’s telecast of “American Idol” by Lionel Richie, a 2022 hall inductee, and show host Ryan Seacrest. The list of 2024 honorees also includes six artists who will receive the hall’s Musical Excellence and Musical Influence awards, two categories that are chosen by the hall’s in-house committees.

The 2024 Musical Excellence Award honorees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Jimmy Buffett (who died last September from cancer) and the pioneering Detroit proto-punk-rock band MC5, whose leader, Wayne Kramer, died of cancer Feb. 2. The final iteration of the group, which included San Diego guitarist Stevie Salas playing alongside fellow guitarist Kramer, toured in 2022.

MC5 had been nominated for induction in six previous years but did not earn enough votes to gain induction. Buffett, whose final concert of his career with his Coral Reefer Band took place last May at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, was never nominated.

This year’s Musical Influence Award honorees include England’s John Mayall and the late Alexis Korner, who in the 1960s jointly spearheaded the blues boom in the UK that fueled the launching of such bands as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. At 90, Mayall appears to be the oldest of this year’s hall honorees.

The third 2024 Musical Influence Award honoree is the late Big Mama Thornton, whose galvanizing recordings of the songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” greatly influenced the subsequent versions of those songs by, respectively, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin.

Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording and are honored for their “originality, impact and influence.” Ballots are cast by the hall’s more than 1,000 voting members, which include previous inductees and an array of music industry professionals, including this writer.

In 2013, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduced it “fan vote,” in which the top five nominees that fans vote online for are submitted as one official ballot that is counted with the rest of the Voting Committee’s. The quantitative impact of the fans’ choices is minimal — accounting for about 0.3 percent of the total — but creates a fair amount of buzz.

This year’s two top fan-vote earners are Dave Matthews Band (with 586,745 votes) and Frampton, with 529,077. This year’s online fan voting was supposed to continue until Friday, but instead concluded April 15.

The hall’s final 2024 honoree, powerhouse music, film and TV industry executive Suzanne de Passe, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. It is named after the co-founder of Atlantic Records.

The announcement of this year’s inductees comes as several of them are battling serious medical conditions.

Frampton, 73, has an autoimmune disease called inclusion body myositis that affects his muscle control and sense of balance. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2019, after falling several times on stage. He now walks with a cane, performs while seated and has lost some control of his fingers.

Osbourne, 75, rose to fame as the lead singer in the heavy-metal band Black Sabbath before launching his solo career in 1980. He suffered a serious fall in 2019, has since undergone four spinal surgeries and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003.

Mick Jones, the 79-year-old founder of the band Foreigner, disclosed his own Parkinson’s diagnosis in February of this year. He cites his condition as the reason he no longer tours with his group. Foreigner’s farewell tour includes a June 28 show at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Fellow 2024 Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang will perform June 24 in San Diego at The Shell. Bassist and band founder Robert “Kool” Bell is the only surviving member still on tour with the group.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the following day. An edited airing of the ceremony will be broadcast on ABC at a later date.

Cher may command the spotlight at the induction ceremony — should she choose to attend.

In December — two months before the 2024 nominees were announced — the 77-year-old singer blasted the hall for never having made her a nominee despite her having been eligible to be on the ballot since 1990.

“You know what? I wouldn’t be in it (the hall) now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher said during a telecast of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

“I’m not kidding you,” Cher continued. “I was about to say something else. … I was about to say I’m not sh-ting you. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

Peter Frampton encouraged attendees at his April 14, 2024, concert at The Shell in San Diego to vote for him to be inducted into the Rock& Roll Hall of Fame.

'Giggly Squad Podcast' co-hosts Paige DeSorbo (L) and Hannah Berner pose on the red carpet.

Put your headphones down, Gigglers.

From September through December, Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo are taking their popular “Giggly Squad” podcast on tour to auditoriums, performing arts centers, theaters, memorial halls and casinos all over the U.S. and Canada.

New Yorkers and New Jerseyans are in luck, too.

The laugh-a-minute ladies will bring the ‘Club Giggly Tour’ to Newark, NJ’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center for a pair of shows on Sunday, Oct. 20 and a one-off at Troy, NY’s Troy Savings Music Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

And even though the duo has toured before, they promise this time around won’t be the same as their last run of Giggly gigs.

“It’s definitely a brand new show,” DeSorbo told Cosmopolitan . “Still the same Giggler energy. We have so many more inside jokes with our listeners now and I feel like we know them even better now, so it will be even more personalized.”

If you’ve never heard their self-described “show about nothing” — based on the premise “What if we record our Facetime sessions to share with the world?” — Berner sums up what makes the ‘Giggly Squad’ stand out.

“I really do feel like the podcast is like a girls’ bathroom at a club. The girls’ bathroom is such a special beautiful, hilarious place, but also an emotional safe space. We’ve kind of created this like, secret, like bathroom humor.”

They also chat about “pop culture, fashion trends, television, horoscopes, mental health, dating, and expose their personal lives,” according to the show’s description on Spotify.
