Bringing a Bottle Back: How to Protect Your Wine for the Flight Home

As wine enthusiasts eagerly embark on bucket-list enotravel to visit the world’s most renowned wine regions , the desire to bring home wine or spirits for personal collections or to share with friends and family while reminiscing about their adventures is stronger than ever. But to many of us, the thought of seeing our luggage on the arrival carousel in a puddle of claret is too frightening, and we simply avoid it altogether.

So, how does one minimize the risks of bringing back a sip-able souvenir?  Let’s review and critique the options for protecting special wine bottles you find on your travels.

Worry-free travel, with a price tag

Macgyver-ing the wine pack job.

In a pinch, many of us have tried to protect the bottle with the clothes or contents already at hand in our luggage. Although this most commonly-used option may not seem to warrant explanation, there is a science to giving this method a modicum of impact and leak resistance.

Start by slipping the bottle in a thick sock for the first layer of protection. Next, slide the sock-lined bottle into the base of a boot, or thickly and tightly wrap with jeans or a chunky sweater. The more layers the better. For leak insurance, insert the bottle into a heavy-duty garbage bag and roll it up like a sleeping bag. Lastly, and most importantly, the bottle needs to be in the middle of your suitcase, surrounded on all 6 sides by clothing or other articles.

Advantages: Little or no cost; takes up no additional space in luggage; no need to pack an additional accessory; can pack essentially any size/shaped bottle.

Disadvantages: Keep your fingers crossed if TSA inspects and repacks your bags; moderate risk for breakage/leakage remains.

Wine travel sleeves offer basic, but limited protection

Consider upleveling the basic option simply by bringing a neoprene wine tote/sleeve along and use in lieu of a sock as the first layer of protection. Neoprene is basically a rubber and offers much more impact protection than a cotton sock. It’s also inexpensive and easy to pack prior.

Ubiquitous and found online and within wine tasting rooms, the most common wine travel sleeve is a style of thick, heavy plastic bubble wrap with a Ziplock and/or folding velcro closure to prevent leaking. These widely available products carry an inexpensive price tag, and are compact in size while either full or empty. The bubble wrap, however, gives much less impact protection than one would think, and the plastic can be easily punctured by broken glass, risking spillage onto other luggage contents. If used, consider wrapping these sleeves within a heavy article of clothing and finish off by rolling them up in a garbage bag. Common examples of these are Wine Wings , JetBag , and WineSkin .

Offering slightly more protection than bubble wrap are inflatable wine sleeves that contain a bladder that is filled with air, either by using a pump or by blowing before sealing the bag. Like bubble wrap bags, Vinnibag , and the Giemson Wine Bottle Protector also have the advantage of being flat and compact while empty, but likewise are susceptible to puncture if the bottle breaks. The main disadvantages with these is that they take up considerable space when inflated (especially if accompanied by a pump) and they must be filled with considerable air pressure to be effective at all.

Advantages: Widely available; low cost; very portable; the non-inflatables take up minimal space; accommodates essentially all 750ml sized bottles.

Disadvantages: Only moderate protection–till susceptible to breaking and puncture/leaking; inflatables may take up considerable space and may burst with increases in cabin pressure.

Vingarde Valise wine travel suitcase 12 bottles

Hard cases are reliable but large

Used by wine professionals who travel with multiple bottles for business (or if you don’t mind hauling an extra bag or possibly paying excess airline fees), by far the best armor for bottles is a hard case. These are larger, check-in luggage cases containing foam inserts meant to handle up to 12 bottles of wine, such as the VinGarde Valise  or Vino Voyage . Coming in a range of sizes and with some variability in shell rigidity, these cases can offer the most reliable protection against bottle breakage. Smaller options for one or two  bottles exist, but be prepared to sacrifice some luggage space for this type of protection.

Advantages: Best protection against impact; best for traveling with multiple bottles.

Disadvantages: Not leakproof; takes up considerable space within luggage; not very portable when empty; may not accommodate some wider bottles.

Vinarmour wine travel bag in a suitcase

New to the market and arguably the best single single-bottle carrier is the Vinarmour Wine Carrier . While no fabric is as impact-resistant as a hard case, this handmade carrier is fortified by a protective foam that absorbs 90% of impact energy, weighs much less than a hard case, and can be compactly folded down portable when not in use. Two different types of Kevlar and Dyneema—all used in making protective body armor—make it the only puncture  AND leakproof wine bag on the market. Vinarmour’s versatility makes it well worth the high cost: not only does it function as a stylish tote for carrying around town, but it also keeps wines chilled twice as long as neoprene.

Advantages: Excellent impact, puncture and leak protection; folds compact and portable; occupies minimal space; multi-use/versatility as a carrier or tote; thermally insulative.

Disadvantages: High cost (especially if traveling with more than one bottle); less shock-resistant than hard cases; may not accommodate bottles larger than standard champagne size.

Traveling with wine or spirit bottles will always involve some risks and trade-offs, but one of the great pleasures of wine tourism is to bring a hard-to-find bottle back to share with friends and family. With a little knowledge of the pros and cons of proper accessories, you can minimize the risks and enjoy the fruits of your wine vacation, long after you return home.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wine Bags for Travel

What is the best way to travel with bottles of wine.

Wrap it up: Start by swaddling your wine bottle in bubble wrap or a padded wine sleeve. This will provide a cushion against impact and prevent any unfortunate accidents. Sock it to ’em: For an extra layer of protection, slip the wrapped bottle into a thick sock or a piece of clothing. This adds cushioning and prevents the bottles from clinking together if you’re packing more than one. Nestle it in: When placing the bottle in your suitcase, position it in the center, surrounded by soft items like clothes, towels, or even a travel pillow. These items will act as shock absorbers, further safeguarding your wine. Consider a wine carrier: If you’re a frequent wine traveler, investing in a specially designed wine carrier, like the Vinarmour Wine Carrier , can offer unparalleled protection, style, and peace of mind. Go hard-shell: For maximum protection, opt for a hard-shell suitcase. The rigid exterior can better withstand impacts, keeping your wine bottles safe from harm.

Are you allowed to pack wine in a suitcase?

Absolutely! You can pack wine in your suitcase, but it’s important to follow airline guidelines and pack it safely to ensure your precious bottles arrive intact. When packing wine in your checked luggage, make sure to: Adhere to quantity limits: Most airlines follow the TSA guidelines, allowing alcohol in checked luggage as long as it doesn’t exceed 70% alcohol by volume (ABV). Wine usually falls within this range with an ABV of around 12-16%. Be sure to check with your airline for any specific quantity restrictions. Pack carefully: Use bubble wrap, a padded wine sleeve, or clothing to cushion your wine bottles and prevent breakage. Position the bottles in the center of your suitcase, surrounded by soft items like clothes or towels to absorb shocks during transit. Be mindful of international travel: When traveling internationally, research customs regulations and any potential duties or taxes you may need to pay when bringing wine into your destination country. Consider a wine carrier or hard-shell suitcase: For added protection and peace of mind, invest in a dedicated wine carrier, like the Vinarmour Wine Carrier, or use a hard-shell suitcase to better safeguard your bottles. By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to pack wine in your suitcase and enjoy your favorite vintages at your destination without worry. Happy travels!

What are wine bags?

Wine bags, also known as wine carriers or wine totes, are specifically designed containers that provide a secure and convenient means of transporting wine bottles.

Wine has long been a symbol of celebration, refinement, and conviviality. As its popularity continues to soar, so does the demand for innovative and convenient ways to transport and present this beloved beverage. The wine bag is one such solution that has gained traction in recent years.

Combining elegance with practicality, wine bags have become a versatile wine accessory for wine enthusiasts, whether they’re attending social gatherings, picnics, jetting off to an exotic destination, or simply looking for a stylish way to store and carry their favorite bottles and precious vintages.

Wine bags come in various sizes, styles, and materials, catering to different preferences and occasions. The primary purpose of wine bags is to protect bottles from breakage, provide insulation, and offer a convenient means of carrying wine.

Materials and construction of wine bags

Wine bags are crafted from a variety of materials, each chosen for its unique qualities. Common materials include:

  • Neoprene: Known for its excellent insulation properties, neoprene wine bags help maintain the temperature of the wine, whether it’s chilled or at room temperature. This material also provides cushioning, offering protection against breakage.
  • Canvas and Fabric: Fabric wine bags are popular for their durability and style. They often feature padded interiors or dividers to prevent bottles from clinking together. Canvas wine bags are favored for their eco-friendly and reusable nature.
  • Leather: For a touch of luxury, leather wine bags are an excellent choice. These bags exude sophistication and may come with additional compartments for accessories like corkscrews or glasses.
  • Recycled Materials: In line with growing environmental awareness, wine bags made from recycled materials are gaining popularity. These eco-friendly options offer a sustainable alternative for wine enthusiasts who want to reduce their carbon footprint.

Wine bags have emerged as an essential accessory for wine enthusiasts who seek both style and practicality in their wine transportation. With a plethora of materials, styles, and designs to choose from, these bags offer a personalized touch to any wine-related occasion. Wine bags and wine travel suitcases make excellent gifts for both wine enthusiasts and wine beginners .

What are wine bags for?

Wine bags serve multiple purposes, including:

  • Wine bags are primarily designed to protect wine bottles during transportation. The materials used, such as neoprene or padded fabrics, provide a cushion against external shocks and temperature fluctuations. This is particularly crucial for delicate wines that can be adversely affected by sudden changes in temperature or rough handling.
  • Unlike traditional packaging, wine bags are lightweight and easy to carry. They often feature handles or straps, making them convenient for picnics, parties, or travel. The design of these bags ensures that transporting wine becomes a hassle-free experience, allowing enthusiasts to bring their favorite bottles to various locations without compromising on style or practicality.
  • As environmental consciousness grows, so does the demand for sustainable packaging solutions. Wine bags made from recycled materials or reusable fabrics contribute to reducing single-use waste associated with traditional packaging. Consumers increasingly appreciate the eco-friendly aspects of wine bags, aligning with their commitment to responsible consumerism.
  • Wine bags serve as elegant gift packaging, enhancing the presentation of a bottle of wine. They often come in aesthetically pleasing designs, colors, and patterns, turning a simple bottle of wine into a thoughtful and visually appealing gift. Some bags even include compartments for wine accessories like corkscrews or glasses, providing a complete package for the recipient.
  • Wineries and wine shops leverage custom-designed wine bags as a means of brand promotion. Branded bags with logos and unique designs not only serve as a walking advertisement but also enhance the perceived value of the wine being purchased. Customers may find themselves choosing a bottle based on the allure of the accompanying bag.

Types of wine bags

Insulated Wine Bags

Ideal for keeping your wine at the perfect temperature, insulated wine bags often come with cooling elements or thermal insulation to maintain the desired climate for your wine. For those who want to maintain the ideal temperature for their wines, insulated wine bags are a must. These bags typically feature padded compartments to keep bottles secure and insulated pockets to regulate temperature. Look for options with thermal linings and adjustable dividers to accommodate different bottle sizes.

Wine Suitcase Inserts

For the frequent traveler, wine suitcase inserts offer a specialized solution for transporting bottles within a standard suitcase. These inserts are designed to protect bottles from breakage and temperature fluctuations, ensuring your wines arrive at your destination in perfect condition. Look for customizable inserts to accommodate different bottle shapes and sizes.

Stylish and practical, wine totes are versatile bags with compartments specifically designed for wine bottles. They come in various materials such as leather, canvas, or neoprene, offering both protection and aesthetic appeal.

Wine Backpacks

For those who prefer a hands-free approach or active wine enthusiast who loves combining outdoor adventures with their passion for wine, a wine backpack is the perfect companion. These bags often include padded or insulated compartments to secure your wine bottles and may have additional pockets for wine accessories such as glasses, corkscrews, and snacks. Look for ergonomic designs and padded shoulder straps for maximum comfort.

Collapsible Wine Bags

Ideal for those who value convenience and space-saving solutions, collapsible wine bags are lightweight and easy to store when not in use. These bags are perfect for impromptu picnics or travel plans where storage space is at a premium. Some models even fold down to a compact size, making them easy to slip into a suitcase or backpack.

Rolling Wine Cases and Wine suitcases

Traveling with multiple bottles can be challenging, but rolling wine cases solve that problem with ease. These bags often resemble traditional luggage but are specifically designed to hold wine bottles securely. Featuring sturdy wheels and telescoping handles, rolling wine cases are a practical choice for those attending wine festivals or traveling with a sizable wine collection. Some can even be listed among luxury wine gifts perfect for serious wine connoisseurs.

Leather Wine Carriers

For a touch of elegance and sophistication, leather wine carriers are an excellent choice. Crafted from high-quality leather, these bags offer a stylish solution for transporting your favorite bottles. Many leather wine carriers come with adjustable straps, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit during your travels.

Key features to look for in wine bags for travel

Here are some of the key features we look for in wine bags for travel:

  • The cornerstone of any exceptional wine bag for travel lies in its ability to maintain the ideal temperature for the wine. Insulation is paramount, preventing temperature fluctuations that could compromise the taste and aroma of your prized bottles. Look for wine bags equipped with thermal insulation to ensure your wines arrive at your destination in perfect condition.
  • Travel can be unforgiving, and wine bottles are fragile companions. Opt for wine bags crafted from high-quality, durable materials that offer sufficient padding and protection. Well-padded compartments, reinforced stitching, and impact-resistant exteriors safeguard your bottles from any bumps or jostles during transit.
  • A versatile wine bag is a valuable companion for any journey. Consider your typical travel needs and select a bag with adjustable compartments or dividers to accommodate various bottle sizes and quantities. This flexibility ensures that whether you’re carrying a single cherished bottle or a collection of diverse vintages, your wine bag can adapt to your needs.
  • Traveling with wine shouldn’t be a cumbersome task. Seek wine bags designed with practical features for easy transportation. Padded handles, adjustable shoulder straps, and even wheels for larger bags contribute to a hassle-free travel experience, allowing you to move gracefully from one destination to the next.
  • While functionality is paramount, aesthetics should not be overlooked. Choose a wine bag that reflects your personal style and complements the elegance of the beverage it carries. Whether you prefer a classic leather exterior or a sleek modern design, the market offers a variety of options to suit every taste.
  • Accidents happen, and the last thing any wine enthusiast wants is a leaking bottle staining their belongings. Look for wine bags with leak-proof and sealed designs, ensuring that even if a bottle experiences a mishap, the spillage remains contained, preventing any unwanted surprises.

Methods of deciding which wine bags are the best for travel

  • Before making a purchase, delve into online reviews and expert opinions. The experiences of fellow wine lovers can provide valuable insights into the performance and durability of different wine bags. Look for testimonials that highlight specific features and their impact on the overall travel experience.
  • Established brands in the wine accessories market often have a reputation for quality and reliability. Researching the history and reputation of a brand can be a good indicator of the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail present in their wine bags.
  • Examine the materials used in the construction of the wine bag and the overall craftsmanship. Quality materials and meticulous attention to detail are indicative of a well-designed and durable product. A wine bag that stands up to scrutiny in terms of both form and function is likely to serve you well on your travels.
  • The best wine bags seamlessly integrate practical features into their design, making them user-friendly. Consider how easy it is to load and unload bottles, access different compartments, and carry the bag over varying terrains. A thoughtfully designed wine bag enhances the overall enjoyment of your wine-tasting journey.
  • A wine bag that allows for customization is a valuable find. Whether through adjustable compartments or additional storage pockets for accessories like corkscrews and glasses, a bag that adapts to your specific needs enhances its utility and convenience.

Tips for buying wine bags for travel

Let’s explore essential tips to consider when buying travel wine bags.

  • When embarking on a journey with your favorite wines, it’s crucial to assess the size and capacity of the travel wine bag. Consider the number of bottles you intend to carry and whether you prefer a compact bag for a few select bottles or a larger bag to accommodate a variety. Many wine bags are designed to carry one, two, or even six and more wine bottles, catering to both solo travelers and those planning to share their favorite vintages with companions.
  • The material and construction of the travel wine bag play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of your precious cargo. Opt for a bag made from durable materials such as padded nylon, neoprene, or leather, providing a protective barrier against potential bumps and jostles during travel. Insulated interiors are also essential to regulate temperature and protect your wines from temperature fluctuations.
  • Considering the portability and comfort of your chosen wine bag is vital, especially if you plan on carrying it for extended periods. Look for bags with adjustable and padded shoulder straps, as well as reinforced handles for ease of transport. Additionally, some bags come with extra features like wheels or backpack-style designs, providing added convenience for those navigating busy airports or uneven terrain.
  • Wines are sensitive to temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to extreme conditions can alter their taste and quality. Ensure your travel wine bag includes features for temperature control, such as thermal insulation or gel packs. This is particularly important for long journeys or when traveling to regions with varying climates.
  • Select a travel wine bag that offers versatility in terms of storage options. Some bags come with adjustable dividers or removable inserts, allowing you to customize the interior based on the size and shape of your bottles. This flexibility ensures that your bag can accommodate a variety of wine bottle sizes and shapes, from standard Bordeaux to wider champagne bottles.
  • Protecting your investment in fine wines is paramount, and choosing a travel wine bag with security features adds an extra layer of assurance. Look for bags with lockable zippers or compartments, preventing unauthorized access to your precious bottles. This is particularly crucial if you plan on checking in your wine bag during air travel.
  • While functionality is key, aesthetics also play a role in the selection process. Choose a travel wine bag that reflects your personal style and preferences. Whether you prefer a sleek and modern design or a classic leather finish, finding a bag that aligns with your taste adds a touch of personalization to your wine-toting experience.
  • Before making a final decision, take the time to read reviews and seek recommendations from fellow wine enthusiasts. Online platforms, wine forums, and product review websites can offer valuable insights into the performance and durability of different travel wine bags. Real-world experiences from other consumers can help you make an informed decision and avoid potential pitfalls.

FAQ about wine bags for travel

Can i carry wine on a plane.

Yes, you can carry wine on a plane, but there are regulations to consider. In USA, for example, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does permit passengers to bring wine on a plane, but it’s important to keep some regulations in mind. You can carry alcoholic beverages in your checked luggage or carry-on bags, but the alcohol content must not be more than 70% (140 proof). Additionally, the amount you can bring is subject to airline and country-specific regulations.

Understanding airline policies:

The first step in planning to bring wine on a plane is to familiarize yourself with the policies of the airline you’ll be flying with. Airlines vary in their regulations, so it’s crucial to check their specific guidelines regarding alcohol transport. Most airlines permit passengers to carry a limited amount of alcohol in their checked luggage, but restrictions may apply.

  • Packing Considerations: Protecting your precious wine bottles during the rigors of air travel is paramount. To avoid the disappointment of a broken bottle upon arrival, follow these packing tips:
  • Secure Packaging: Invest in a sturdy wine travel suitcase or case or use specialized wine bottle protectors. These can shield your bottles from impact and temperature fluctuations.
  • Sealing Bottles: Ensure each bottle is properly sealed to prevent leaks due to changes in cabin pressure.

Legal Considerations:

While bringing wine on a plane is generally allowed, there are legal considerations to bear in mind:

  • Customs Regulations: If you’re traveling internationally, be aware of customs regulations regarding the importation of alcohol. Some countries have restrictions on the amount of alcohol you can bring.
  • Legal Drinking Age: Ensure that you comply with the legal drinking age of the destination country. Some places have strict regulations regarding the importation of alcohol by individuals under a certain age.
  • Duty-Free Allowances: Take advantage of duty-free shops at the airport, but be mindful of the limits imposed on duty-free alcohol purchases.

Tips for a seamless experience while carrying wine on a plane:

  • Check with the Airline in Advance: Contact the airline ahead of time to confirm their specific policies and any documentation required for carrying wine.
  • Choose Non-Stop Flights: Opt for non-stop flights to minimize the handling of your luggage and reduce the risk of breakage.
  • Temperature Control: Be mindful of the temperature conditions in both the departure and arrival locations. Extreme temperatures can affect the quality of the wine. That is where the wine bags or wine travel suitcases offer the best solution.

Are you allowed to pack wine in a suitcase?

Absolutely! You can pack wine in your suitcase, but it’s important to keep in mind a few things to ensure your bottles arrive safely and without any damage. Firstly, do check with your airline’s guidelines regarding the transportation of alcohol. Most airlines allow up to 5 liters of alcohol per person in checked luggage, but some may have specific rules or restrictions.

  • Packing guidelines:
  • Ensure that your wine bottles are securely packed to prevent breakage. Specialized wine travel bags with protective padding are available for purchase.
  • Consider the weight limitations imposed by the airline, as excessive weight may incur additional fees.
  • For example, in the USA, packing wine in your checked luggage is generally allowed for domestic flights. However, there are limits on the quantity, and certain states may have restrictions on the importation of alcohol.
  • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits alcohol in checked luggage as long as it doesn’t exceed 70% alcohol by volume (ABV). Wine usually falls within this range with an ABV of around 12-16%. Most airlines follow the TSA guidelines, but be sure to check with your airline for any specific quantity restrictions.
  • International regulations can vary significantly. Some countries have strict restrictions on importing alcohol, and failure to adhere to these rules can result in fines or confiscation.
  • Research the specific regulations of the destination country, including any duties or taxes that may apply.
  • Some airlines may have specific restrictions on the number of bottles or the alcohol content allowed in checked luggage.
  • Be aware of any fees associated with transporting alcohol. These fees can vary, so it’s prudent to check with the airline in advance.
  • Invest in wine-specific travel cases or use padded sleeves to safeguard your bottles from potential damage.
  • To avoid leaks, seal wine bottles securely. Consider using plastic wrap or placing bottles in resealable plastic bags.
  • Check the regulations of both the departure and destination locations to ensure compliance with any quantity restrictions.

In order to pack wine in your suitcase and enjoy your preferred vintages at your destination without any issues, it is important to follow these guidelines. We also recommend that you research, plan and pack responsibly to ensure a seamless journey for both you and your cherished bottles.

Will wine be OK in checked luggage?

Transporting wine in checked luggage is a viable option, provided that it is securely packed. Wine enthusiasts who travel with specialized products, such as the VinGardeValise travel wine suitcase or the Vinarmour wine tote bag, attest to the rarity of broken bottles. Despite initial concerns about placing wine bottles in checked luggage, it is generally observed that with careful and strategic packing, wine travels exceptionally well in this manner.

How do you pack a bottle of wine in a suitcase?

One of the best ways to ensure the safe transport of your wine is by investing in a wine travel suitcase or a specialized wine bag designed explicitly for this purpose. These specially crafted carriers provide a level of protection that goes beyond what a typical suitcase can offer. Let’s explore why these solutions are the ideal choice for safeguarding your precious bottles.

  • Durable Construction: Wine travel suitcases and specialized wine bags are constructed with durability in mind. They often feature reinforced exteriors, padded interiors, and sturdy handles, providing a protective cocoon for your bottles. Some models even come with shock-absorbing materials to cushion against impacts during transit.
  • Secure Bottle Placement: These specialized carriers are designed to securely hold wine bottles in place, minimizing the risk of movement and potential breakage. Adjustable straps, dividers, or foam inserts help keep the bottles snug and well-protected.
  • Temperature Control: Maintaining the right temperature is crucial for preserving the quality of wine. Some wine travel suitcases come equipped with insulation or temperature-regulating features to shield your bottles from extreme temperatures, ensuring they reach their destination in the same condition as when you packed them.
  • Compliance with Airline Regulations: Traveling by air adds another layer of complexity to packing wine. Wine travel suitcases are often designed to comply with airline regulations, ensuring that your precious cargo can be transported without any hiccups.
  • Convenience and Accessibility: Many wine travel suitcases and specialized wine bags come with additional features for added convenience. These may include wheels for easy maneuverability, exterior pockets for accessories, and locks for security.

What is the best way to travel with bottles of wine?

Here are some of the best practices for traveling with wine, covering everything from packaging and transportation to legal considerations and the preservation of wine quality.

  • Choose the Right Packaging: The first and foremost consideration when traveling with wine is the packaging. Investing in proper packaging materials can make all the difference in ensuring that your bottles remain intact during the journey. Here are some essential packaging tips:
  • Wine suitcases or paddled wine bags: Specialized wine suitcases and wine bags are designed to securely hold wine bottles. These bags usually have inserts that cradle each bottle, providing protection against impact and temperature variations.
  • Bubble Wrap and Cushioning Materials: Wrap each bottle individually in bubble wrap or other cushioning materials to protect against breakage. Place additional padding between bottles to prevent them from clinking together.
  • Seal with Care: Use strong packaging tape to seal the box securely. Ensure that the box is tightly sealed to prevent any accidental openings during transit.
  • Consider Temperature and Humidity: Wine is sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, and extreme conditions can adversely affect its quality. When traveling with wine, consider the following temperature and humidity guidelines:
  • Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Exposure to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can damage wine. If possible, transport your wine in a temperature-controlled environment, such as the cabin of your car instead of the trunk.
  • Protect from Sunlight: Ultraviolet rays can be harmful to wine. Keep your wine bottles away from direct sunlight by placing them in a shaded area, in the trunk of your car, or covered with a light-blocking material.
  • Maintain Humidity Levels: Excessive dryness or humidity can affect the cork and compromise the wine. Aim for a moderate humidity level by storing your wine in a cool, dark place.
  • Check Legal Restrictions: Before packing your wine, be aware of the legal restrictions and regulations regarding the transportation of alcoholic beverages. Different countries and states have varying rules, and it’s crucial to comply with them to avoid legal complications. Some areas may limit the quantity of alcohol you can bring, while others may require special permits.
  • Research Local Laws: Check the alcohol import regulations of your destination and any places you may pass through. Some countries may require you to pay duties or taxes on imported alcohol.
  • Secure Permits if Necessary: In some cases, you may need to obtain a permit to transport alcohol across borders. Research and secure any required permits well in advance of your journey.
  • Choose the Right Mode of Transportation: The mode of transportation plays a significant role in determining the safety of your wine during travel. Different methods come with their own set of considerations:
  • Car Travel: If possible, transport wine by car. This allows you to control the environment, minimize movement, and avoid the potential for rough handling that may occur during air or bus travel.
  • Air Travel: When flying with wine, it’s crucial to check the airline’s policies on transporting alcohol. Some airlines have specific guidelines or restrictions, and you may need to pack your wine in checked luggage rather than carry-on.
  • Shipping Services: For long-distance travel or international trips, consider using professional wine shipping services. These services are equipped to handle the delicate nature of wine transportation and may provide additional insurance.
  • Invest in Wine Luggage: For wine enthusiasts who frequently travel with their favorite bottles, investing in specialized wine luggage can be a game-changer. Wine luggage is designed with built-in protective features and compartments to securely hold bottles. Some options even come with temperature control capabilities.
  • Wine Suitcases: These specially designed suitcases have padded compartments to cradle each bottle securely. Some models even include temperature-controlled sections to protect your wine from temperature fluctuations.
  • Wine Carriers: Smaller, more portable wine carriers are also available. These can be convenient for short trips or as carry-on items during air travel.
  • Consider Alternative Packaging Options: If you’re concerned about the weight and fragility of glass bottles, consider alternative packaging options that are more travel-friendly:
  • Bag-in-Box: Some wineries offer bag-in-box options, which are more lightweight and less prone to breakage. These are ideal for casual consumption and can be a convenient choice for picnics or outdoor events.
  • Maintain Proper Orientation: When packing wine, the orientation of the bottles is essential to prevent the corks from drying out and compromising the seal. Follow these guidelines:
  • Store Bottles Horizontally: For longer travels, pack your wine bottles horizontally to ensure that the wine remains in contact with the cork. This helps prevent the cork from drying out and allows for a proper seal.
  • Minimize Movement: Secure the bottles in a way that minimizes movement within the packaging. Padding and cushioning materials can help absorb shocks and vibrations, reducing the risk of breakage.
  • Arrive Prepared: Once you arrive at your destination, it’s crucial to handle your wine with care to ensure it’s ready for enjoyment. Follow these steps:
  • Let Bottles Rest: If your wine has experienced significant temperature changes during travel, allow the bottles to rest in a stable environment for a few days before opening. This gives the wine time to acclimate to its new surroundings.
  • Avoid Rapid Temperature Changes: Once you’ve reached your destination, avoid subjecting the wine to rapid temperature changes. Gradual temperature adjustments are less likely to impact the quality of the wine.

Choosing the best wine bag for travel ultimately depends on your personal preferences and the specific needs of your journey. Whether you prioritize insulation, style, convenience, or all of the above, the market offers a diverse selection of wine bags to suit every taste.

Investing in a quality wine bag not only protects your cherished bottles but also enhances your overall wine-tasting experience, allowing you to savor your favorite vintages wherever your travels take you.

Best Wine Bottle Protector Sleeve Buying Guide

While wine protectors don't have a lot of distinguishing factors, people still have different preferences, thus the need to consider the following factors:

Most wine sleeves are made of plastic and take the form of inflatable wine sleeves and bubble wrap, while some are polypropylene mesh.

You have to consider if they can withstand extreme temperatures and long hours of being stored in a compartment when traveling to ensure that your wines are safe and secure.

Do you want to have a clear view of what's inside, or do you prefer a more opaque sleeve? There are also options that boast color all-around, so you can't see your wines when packed.

Wine sleeves are usually affordable and range from $10 - $20+. But if you want to get a great deal, you can choose those that come in a set so you can get your money's worth.

Wine sleeves serve more functionality rather than style. While there are differences in color, the feature that distinguishes one brand from another is the logo or the brand name.

They are also shaped the same, which is a wine bottle. Furthermore, select something with an easy-to-use closure system so you can take it off and on quickly when needed.

Choose a size that will fit most bottles in your collection. Make sure that it has the right size because if it's too big, you will risk shaking or moving the wine. On the other hand, if it's too small, the sleeve might be torn off, or the bottle may not fit at all.

Wine Bottle Protector Sleeves FAQ

1. what are the benefits of using a wine sleeve.

  • Wine sleeves are mainly used to secure wine bottles during travel. The protection it gives prevents the glass from hitting the luggage and keeps the labels from being scratched off.
  • They keep your wine safe from breakages and spills with their seals or closure system.
  • Wine sleeves are more convenient than making your own wrap with tape or clothes.
  • They will protect against light which can affect the quality of your wine.

2. Why would I want to use wine protector sleeves instead of just wrapping the bottle in bubble wrap or packing tape?

Wine sleeves are more convenient to use because they are already shaped like a wine bottle to accommodate them immediately. It will also save you time from making your own. Furthermore, they don't damage the wine's labels like packing tape would.

3. What size should my wine bottle be to fit into a protector sleeve?

While most sleeves can accommodate wine bottles of any size, some are made to fit only specific sizes. It's best to measure your bottle first before purchasing to ensure you get the right size for it.

4. Do these work on champagne bottles as well as regular wine bottles?

Yes, as long as the sleeves are big enough to fit Champagne bottles since they have a wider body compared to standard-sized wine bottles.

5. How to use a wine protector sleeve?

If a sleeve is inflatable, you need to inflate it first with a pump, then simply place the wine bottle inside. For all other types, it's pretty straightforward as you only need to put the bottles inside and seal it tight.

If you are a wine enthusiast, chances are you also collect wine tools and accessories like the best wine stoppers , wine preservation systems , and wine corkscrews . Add the best wine bottle protector sleeves in your arsenal to keep your vino safe and in mint condition, especially when traveling. You can also opt to keep it together with your glasses in the best wine travel cases .

I've Traveled with Wine for Years, and This Is My $9 Secret to Keeping It Safe in My Suitcase

It’s a travel game-changer.

wine bottle travel protector bags

VICUSCHKA / Getty Images

I almost never check luggage. After losing multiple suitcases and spending far too many hours waiting in bag drop lines and baggage claim, I’ve become an extremely light packer to ensure everything I need fits securely in the plane’s overhead bin. There’s only one exception, and that is when the trip involves wine .

I’ve been a drinks writer for three years, and I’ve had the opportunity to visit numerous vineyards and wineries across the country and around the world. And once I taste a bottle I love, I know I have to bring some home for my friends and family as souvenirs — and some for myself, for good measure.

I’ve learned the hard way that this isn’t always an easy feat. For years, I wrapped my bottles in sweatshirts and towels as makeshift padding and hoped for the best. And perhaps unsurprisingly, I’ve had my fair share of bottles burst in transit — dyeing my clothes and toiletries a deep red hue. But just last year, I found a solution that’s inexpensive and actually works.

Monkkino Wine Bottle Travel Protector Bags

This set of 8 inflatable cushions has made traveling with my favorite bottles a breeze. The bags are packed flat before use, saving you valuable space in your luggage for your outbound flight and measure just 4.5- by 13-inches. Once you’re ready to pack wine into your checked baggage, all you have to do is pump air into the fill port using the kit’s included pump to inflate the bubble wrap-like casing, place your bottle inside, and zip up your suitcase.

Each plastic protector features seven individual columns, ensuring that a puncture in one area does not impact the others. This design guarantees your wine is safeguarded against leakage, no matter how bumpy the journey gets. It’s like bubble wrap, only better.

While I’ve used them most often for wine, they also work great for spirits bottles and other breakable items such as drinking glasses, electronics, and more. Unfortunately they don’t deflate once they’ve been used, but luckily they can be purchased in bulk at just over 60 cents a unit. The bags are also self-sealing, so you won’t even need to add tape!

If you’re going through the trouble of checking your bags, you might as well fill them with great wine. Learn from my mistakes and stash a few of these in your duffel to avoid broken bottles and dreams — it’ll only cost you $9.

At the time of publishing, the price was $9.

Best Wine Travel Bags – Wine Suitcases, Luggage, & How To Pack Wine

We consider ourselves professional eaters. We also sometimes joke that we are professional drinkers, but that is not as socially acceptable. However you want to call it, we often find ourselves flying with wine or other alcohol. I never thought we’d become experts at traveling with wine, but here we have it. That’s why we wanted to offer suggestions and tips on the best wine travel bags. The options we offer include wine suitcases, wine luggage, wine totes, and other ways to pack wine.

The Best Wine Suitcases:

According to our readers, these are the most popular wine luggage options that we recommend:

  • VinGardeValise Grande 12 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase
  • CasePro Wine Carrier with Wheels  – 12 Bottles
  • Wine Enthusiast Vino Voyage – 12 Bottles

Our Experience Flying With Wine

I would like to say that we travel with wine solely because of our profession as food and drink writers. The truth is that we’ve been purchasing wine and traveling with it for almost two decades. In that time, we’ve tried almost everything.

During the early years, we would purchase a case or more from winemakers and have them shipped from Italy or Spain back to the US. We’ve on occasion stuck a wine bottle in our luggage, or a bottle of gin or whiskey, wrapped in an old t-shirt and hoped for the best.

In recent years, though, we’ve done a lot more research on how to travel with wine. After all, wine is one of our favorite souvenirs to bring back. We are not going to stop traveling with wine. Eventually, we knew our luck would run out and one of those bottles wrapped in a t-shirt would break. Wine is delicate and it must be packed with care.

The Best Wine Carrying Cases

In this post, we offer a wide variety of options for wine bottle carrier bags. I include full reviews of each option below. Most of them are specifically designed for air travel. Some work well on the ground too. If you are short on time, feel free to use the table below, which includes all our recommendations. I also include travel tips on how to pack wine bottles in different ways and how to keep up-to-date on rules about traveling with wine.

All of these options are available on Amazon. We like Amazon for a couple of reasons. First, they have a good variety of options for wine bags for air travel and local travel, at every price point. Second, we try to recommend products that are part of  Amazon Prime , which provides purchasers with free and often super-fast delivery. (Get 30 days of Prime free  here .)

The Best Wine Suitcases And Wine Luggage – Reviews

If you are a wine professional, like we are quickly becoming, you may need to travel with a good amount of wine. This option also works for wine aficionados who know when they leave home for a trip that they are bringing back a good amount of wine. A quality wine suitcase will ensure that any checked wine is well-protected to avoid any breakage.

Most of these options are hard-sided wine travel suitcases. They are rugged and made to withstand airplane travel. Some also have a little bit of elegance or class to them.

There are a few types of wine luggage in this category. One type looks like typical wheeled luggage and from the outside, no one would know the case contained bottles of wine. Other types look a little more like they contain wine and range from hardcore to practical in style. All of these options have wheels to make them easier to move.

I don’t spend time in the wine luggage reviews below on the dimensions of the case or carrier. This is because they are all roughly the same size. It is also because they are checked luggage so there is no need to worry about carry-on luggage dimensions.

VinGardeValise Wine Luggage

Our top pick for a wine suitcase for wine pros, vingardevalise grande – 12 bottles.

wine bottle travel protector bags

For true wine professionals, the VinGardeValise Grande 12 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase is a great option. I like that it looks like regular luggage. This 12 bottle rolling wine bag even has 360-degree spinner wheels so it is easy to maneuver. It’s perfect for both a wine pro and a wine enthusiast.

The wine suitcase holds up to 12 bottles of wine or 10 bottles of wine and two bottles of Champagne, or similarly shaped larger bottles. The interior is flexible, meaning it can hold six bottles along with clothes, or 12 bottles. The case weighs only 13.5 pounds, which means full with 12 bottles it will weigh less than 50 pounds.

This case includes a TSA-approved lock rather than a hard padlock, which keeps the wine secure but allows TSA inspection. It also comes with HomingPin, which is a lost luggage locator system, sort of like a lo-jack for wine suitcases. It comes in black, silver, and burgundy. They also sell versions with personalized nameplates, which are a nice touch for a wine gift. The luggage also comes with a 10-year warranty.

It’s hard not to say that this is the best wine suitcase on the market, based on features and reputation. The foam inserts are high-density and well-made. The luggage has a new ribbed design along with a reinforcement bar and corner guards to protect the wine inside.

  • Holds 12 bottles of most shapes
  • The interior is customizable to hold wine, wine accessories, and even clothes
  • Airline approved and satisfies requirements of TSA and FAA, including TSA-approved lock and HomingPin luggage locator
  • Fully loaded it weighs under 50 pounds

VinGardeValise Petite – Up To 8 Bottles

wine bottle travel protector bags

If the VinGardeValise Grande is a little too much, then the VinGardeValise Petite 8 Bottle Wine Travel Suitcase might be the perfect solution.

This rolling wine bag has a lot of the same features as the larger version. It transports up to eight bottles and has flexible inserts to carry wine or clothes or personal items. Empty the wine luggage weighs about 12 pounds, which is a lot lighter than the 12 bottle version.

It includes the HomingPin lost luggage locator and a TSA-approved lock. It comes in blue, silver, and burgundy all of which can be purchased with the customized nameplate. The VinGardeValie Petite has a limited 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.

OTHER WINE SUITCASE BRANDS

Casepro 12 bottle wine travel case.

wine bottle travel protector bags

The CasePro 12 Bottle Wine Travel Case takes things up a notch from the VinGarde Valise. The CasePro holds 12 bottles of wine. It is thermally insulated to maintain wine temperatures during flights. This is a great feature when traveling with high-value wines. There is also space for wine accessories, like corkscrews and aerators, which you might not be able to carry on the airplane.

The insulated foam can hold almost any bottle size. There are foam neck caps to hold bottles in place. The case is insulated against heat, and cold, and is waterproof. It also protects against shocks and vibration, which is important with wine transport.

The CasePro also comes as an  8 bottle wine carrier suitcase  and in larger sizes, up to  24 bottles . When comparing the CasePro to the VinGardeValise, I would suggest the CasePro is best for wine professionals whereas the VinGarde Valise would work for wine pros and wine enthusiasts. The case weighs 25 pounds, which would place the total weight filled with 12 bottles of wine at around 60 pounds.

T.Z. CASE INTERNATIONAL 7 BOTTLE WINE ROLLER BAG

wine bottle travel protector bags

The T.Z. Case International 7-Bottle Wheeled Wine Roller Bag is a happy medium between the CasePro and the VinGardeValise.  TZ Case International  is a specialist in travel cases, for beauty products, sporting products, and wine.

It holds up to seven wine bottles in a rugged molded polypropylene case with flexible foam inserts. The inserts can be removed to hold clothes and other personal items. The luggage is both water and dust-resistant. It’s also lighter weight than the other options, weighing in at only 10 pounds and about 35 pounds loaded with wine. Although not specifically marketed as TSA or FAA-approved like the VinGardeValise there are no reported problems carrying it domestically or internationally.

I actually like the shape of this, which is less bulky and would make it easier to carry along with a regular suitcase. It’s a good value option in comparison to the others. The TZ Case International is smaller, with fewer bells and whistles, but also is less expensive.

WINE CHECK LUGGAGE

wine bottle travel protector bags

The Wine Check Luggage is a great alternative to the more hefty wine suitcases, above. It is made of high-quality nylon with reinforced stitching.

Here’s how it works. There are two pieces that are sold separately. There is a wine check bag and styrofoam inserts. Here it is sold as a complete set. The wine check bag is collapsible foldable, making it easy to store when not in use.

The bag and inserts only weigh about five pounds, making it the lightest option on our list. Even when filled with 12 bottles of wine, the total weight would be well less than 50 pounds. It is approved by the FAA and the TSA.

WINEBUDDY BY MC CASES

wine bottle travel protector bags

Similar to TZ Case International,  MC-Cases  specializes in travel cases, but of a pretty rugged variety. They specialize in cases for high-end cameras and drones, so they are known for transporting high-value items.

The Winebuddy Wine Travel Luggage is made in Germany and stores up to eight wine bottles. It really is a dedicated wine suitcase because the inserts are not as flexible as the VinGardeValise. The inserts are made for standard 750ml bottles. Although it doesn’t come with a TSA-approved lock, it has holes in the case for one. The case is waterproof, dust-proof, and durable.

VINO VOYAGE BY WINE ENTHUSIAST

wine bottle travel protector bags

We’ve been big fans of Wine Enthusiast products for years, ever since we started collecting wine over 10 years ago. The Vino-Voyage 2.0 by Wine Enthusiast is the latest iteration of their wine suitcase.

It comes in Bordeaux red with four spinner wheels. It’s durable and lightweight. The Vino Voyage has reinforced corner protectors to ensure the wine inside stays safe during transport. There is a TSA-approved lock for security.

One of the most unique things about this wine luggage is that it has a built-in electronic luggage scale. This means you can always confirm the weight of the bag before checking it. Don’t worry that you will be over your luggage limit. Overall, it’s a pretty slick option.

WINE SLEEVES FOR TRAVEL

When it comes to how to pack wine in a suitcase, the biggest concern is how to protect the wine from breakage during the flight. One of the best ways to do this is to buy a wine sleeve, which acts like wine bubble wrap. Our favorite brand is  WineHero .

This is a six-pack of bubble wrap wine bottle protectors, but it does a lot more than simple bubble wrap. It’s leak-proof and waterproof. They work for wine, liquor, beer, olive oil, and other liquids that are similar in shape. After our recent trip to  Speyside  in Scotland, we fit a rather wide bottle of whisky in ours too.

They work by using a combination of Ziploc and velcro closures to make the wine sleeve reusable as well. What I like about these is that they travel flat, so you can add a few to your suitcase on the way out and use them if you need to on the way back.

WINE TOTE BAGS AND INSULATED TOTES

The main purpose of this wine accessory blog post is to help travelers fly with wine. I wanted, though, to share our recommendations for a few wine totes. Here, I focus on insulated wine tote bags. The insulation helps to protect the wine as well as to keep it chilled. This makes it a great option for bringing white wine or sparkling wine to a friend’s house. They are also great solutions for picnics and BBQs.

A wine tote bag makes a great wine gift, but it’s also a worthwhile investment for frequent wine drinkers. Wine bottles can break easily, even when carrying them short distances. Not only is that wasted wine, but it can destroy a purse or the back seat of a car in seconds.

OPUX PREMIUM 6 BOTTLE WINE BAG

wine bottle travel protector bags

The Opux Premium 6 Bottle Wine Bag is another wine travel bag option. This is a super practical bag for transporting wine on the ground, but it cannot be checked onto an airplane.

Despite that, it works well. The case has insulated, padded sides, with removable wine inserts inside. The case is insulated so it can be used for picnics and camping. It can be carried like a wine tote or carried on the shoulder. The bag is available in black, brown, and gray.

INSULATED WINE BAG

The  Premium Insulated Wine Bag  by Opux is the perfect wine tote. It holds six bottles, although there is a four bottle option too. The bag comes in three colors: heather grey, black, and black with tan striping.

The interior of the travel wine cooler bag includes padded wine bottle protection as well as temperature control. Although it doesn’t  chill the wine , it will keep chilled wine cool for hours. There’s a detachable shoulder strap as well as padded hand straps for easy carrying.

wine bottle travel protector bags

TIRRINIA TRAVEL WINE COOLER

The Tirrinia Insulated Travel Wine Cooler Bag is a smaller alternative but equally functional wine tote. There’s a sturdy leather handle and an adjustable shoulder strap. It is padded and insulated. This protects the wine and keeps chilled wine cool. It holds two bottles of wine or sparkling wine. It can be used for other beverages as well.

In addition to red, this tote comes in grey as well as black, black with colors, and white with black, all in pretty contemporary designs. It also makes a great wine gift.

Can You Take Wine On A Plane

wine bottle travel protector bags

This is really a two-part question. The first question is whether you can bring wine in carry on luggage. The second question is can you pack wine in checked luggage? We will answer both questions, in great detail, and hopefully, this will answer all of the questions that plague travelers who want to pack wine. Taking wine on a plane is not all that difficult once you understand the rules.

Can You Carry Wine On A Plane

With all the restrictions on liquids, you cannot bring liquor or wine in carry on luggage unless it is less than 100 ml (3.4 ounces). That means travel-sized wine bottles, which do make good souvenirs, can be carried on in your luggage. But, they need to be placed in a small plastic bag, alongside your shampoo and other toiletries. It’s possible, but it’s a real pain.

The only other way to carry on a wine bottle is if you purchase it from Duty Free. We always hear stories of travelers being caught off guard and leaving Champagne behind for the security guards! Check out the TSA rules  here .

Traveling With Wine Pro Tip

If you purchase duty free liquor in Europe before traveling to the US, if you have a connecting flight there are additional rules. For example, if you fly from London to New York and then connect to Detroit you will need to collect your checked luggage in New York. Then, you need to re-check your bag to continue on to Detroit. You will need to add your duty free liquor purchase into your checked bag before continuing on to Detroit. Just be warned.

Can You Check Wine In Luggage

wine bottle travel protector bags

This is where it gets interesting when it comes to bringing wine on a plane. If you travel with wine, it has to be in your checked luggage. There are a lot of factors that go into packing wine. These rules apply to flying with wine, Champagne, or any other bottle of alcohol. You don’t need to do anything special with the airline when you travel with wine. The real question is how to pack wine in luggage.

We will cover each of these options in detail. If you are a wine professional or frequently travel with wine, then a wine travel suitcase is probably a good investment. These would be checked as additional pieces of luggage, so be sure to check what your luggage allowance is.

On average, a bottle of wine weighs about three to four pounds. This works well if you don’t want to ship a case of wine directly from the winery.

If you only generally travel with a couple of bottles of wine there are some wine sleeves for airplane travel that are best.

People ask us all the time if it is okay to place Champagne or sparkling wine in checked luggage. Cargo holds, and the space underneath the plane is pressurized. The way sparkling wine is produced, the bottle, and the cork are made to withstand that kind of pressure.

Things To Consider When Purchasing Wine Carriers For Travel

wine bottle travel protector bags

In order to determine which wine bottle travel bag is perfect for you, it helps to ask yourself some questions in order to determine your needs. I can certainly give my opinion on which is the best wine travel bag, but if it isn’t the right one for your needs, it’s certainly not the best.

Are You A Wine Pro?

If you are a wine pro or find yourself traveling with wine on a regular basis then something like a wine bottle suitcase is probably best for you. This is particularly true if you travel with samples to conferences or bring samples home from winery visits.

These suitcases are specifically designed to carry wine. The inside of the suitcase is layered with wine bottle protectors to prevent breakage and other damage to the wine while in transport. Some of the wine luggage options are dedicated only to wine whereas in others you can pack clothes and wine. These rules and suggestions also apply to someone who is an avid wine collector.

How Often Do You Transport Wine?

wine bottle travel protector bags

If you are not a wine pro or wine collector, whether it is on a plane or on the ground, think about how much you travel with wine. Are you visiting one winery a year and bringing home a few bottles? Or, do you make several trips a year with the intent of bringing wine back each time? Do you bring a bottle or two of something back on every trip you take – domestic and international? Do you find yourself taking wine to people’s houses for dinners or picnics or BBQs?

When answering these questions, if you fly with wine often, wine bottle luggage might be worth the investment. If it is only once or twice a year, then wine sleeves for travel might be sufficient. If you want to transport wine locally, a wine carrier tote or insulated wine carrier might be best. These protect bottles when you carry them with you or keep them cool for picnics or BBQs. We share recommendations for each of these options below.

How Many Bottles Are You Carrying?

The most important of these questions come down to how many wine bottles you pack or travel with regularly. If you plan on packing six or 12 bottles on a regular basis, then it is worth it to invest in a quality wine luggage carrier or suitcase. Particularly from a reputable brand that will last for years to come. If you only pack wine on occasion, then some of the more casual options are probably best for you.

FAQS – HOW TO PACK WINE BOTTLES

When talking about shipping or packing a case of wine, people often start by asking how many bottles of wine are there in a case. In the US, a case of wine often includes 12 bottles. In Europe, though, the standard is six bottles in a case.

There are a couple of rules when it comes to wine transport into the US. I spoke above about the liquid limitations in the US, which are the same as much of the rest of the world. According to the TSA, for alcohol that has below 24% ABV (alcohol by volume) there is no limit on how much you can carry in your checked luggage. This includes wine, which is normally no more than 15% ABV. For alcohol that is between 24-70%, there is a limit of five liters per person. The average bottle of alcohol is normally 750ml. The ABV of most rum, gin, vodka, whisky , etc. falls within this range.  That said, there might be tax charged on anything over one liter according to the US Customs And Border Patrol. If they stop you at the airport you might need to pay $1 or $2 per liter for wine, but possibly more for liquors.

In the past, travelers could bring wine on a plane. Today, it’s only possible to travel with a wine bottle in checked luggage, with one exception. When traveling internationally, it is possible to purchase wine at an airport’s duty-free shop. The wine will be sealed in a pre-approved clear plastic bag. This bag then can be carried onboard the plane. Once onboard, neither the bag nor the bottle can be opened.

How to Pack a Bottle of Wine Safely When You Fly

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We may receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertising Disclosure, visit this page .

We're approaching that time of year when many travelers in the Northern Hemisphere are gearing up to take food and wine trips. I've been fortunate enough to go on many, including in California, France, Italy, Portugal (photo below), Switzerland, South Africa (the second photo below), Argentina and Australia. RELATED: Why Packing Cubes Are a Travel Essential

If that's your style, there’s no doubt you're going to want to bring some vino home with you, and that means you're going to find yourself with a dilemma: how to safely pack bottles of wine so they don’t break while in transit.

You can’t carry wine through security and you don’t want the bottle(s) to break in your checked luggage, ruining all of your clothes, which has happened to me once before. Yup, I learned the hard  way.

After the TSA implemented its restriction on the amount of liquid travelers could carry through security, I stopped traveling with bottles of wine simply because it was no longer worth the risk. So, what can you do? How do you pack a bottle of wine so it can be transported safely in your luggage?

For starters, if you're flying with Alaska Airlines along the west coast, you may be in luck as they offer a free checked case of wine from 32 cities .

Beyond that, you can either try shipping bottles or packing them very carefully. I thought wrapping my bottles in a sweater and then a plastic bag would be sufficient for protecting the bottle but nope. So I would recommend packing some bottle protectors like WineSkin bags that will give your wine bottles protection and you peace of mind.

WineSkin is a bottle transport bag. Each WineSkin is made of a cushion of bubble packaging and a thick-grade vinyl exterior. You simply put one around a bottle of wine (or olive oil, etc.), peel the inner seal, compress it against the protective outer vinyl covering, and pop the whole thing in your bag. Each unsealed WineSkin measures 17.75" x 7" x .25" and fits a bottle up to 750ml in size (standard wine bottle size). At the time of this publication, you can pick up a pack of eight WineSkins for $26.99 on Amazon . There's also a cheaper version that Amazon recommends called Wine Angel for $18.99.

DID YOU KNOW: The TSA says : Alcoholic beverages with more than 24% but not more than 70% alcohol are limited in checked bags to 5 liters (1.3 gallons) per passenger and must be in unopened retail packaging. Alcoholic beverages with 24% alcohol or less are not subject to limitations in checked bags.

Even if you use these bottle protectors, remember to never pack two bottles of wine next to each other and still cushion them as much as possible

Whatever your travel needs for the season ahead, odds are that a good tote can make your packing life more organized, and less stressful—honestly, what more could you hope for? With that in mind, we've scoured the internet for the more durable, functional travel totes for every type of traveler, from the serial overpacker to the organization fiend. Here, our favorite finds for all of your journeys.

Perpetually trying to find space in your carry-on for one last thing? Meet what one T&C editor calls, "the personal item of every overpacker's dream." Featuring five exterior pockets, plus six on the interior and an detachably pouch, it will keep all of your travel essentials organized while it's sturdy-yet-lightweight construction makes it easy to tuck in "just in case" items to your hearts desire without overwhelming your arms.

The cushy, reinforced straps are easy on the shoulders, but it also has a detachable crossbody strap and a built-in sleeve to slip over the handle of your luggage if you don't feel like toting. It also comes in four sizes (we're fond of the medium for it's ability to hold oodles of stuff while still slipping neatly beneath the seat in front of you on a plane) and a seasonally-refreshed roster of more than a dozen shades, making it as stylish as it is functional.

Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe Tote

For the "a place for everything and everything in its place" traveler, this tote has you covered with a zippered bottom pocket that's perfect for separating out toiletries or dirty shoes from the rest of your haul (an interior panel also allows you to open the bottom compartment fully, if you're craving a deeper bag.)

Available in recycled poly or sturdy canvas, at 15" x 14" x 7", it qualifies as a personal item for most airlines and has a handy luggage sleeve to pair with your suitcase. For those looking for larger options, it comes in four additional sizes as well.

Cuyana bags are a favorite of T&C editors and royals alike ( Meghan Markle is a big fan ) for their timelessly stylish silhouettes, buttery soft leather, and effortless functionality. This, their latest launch, is made specifically with travel in mind.

Crafted with lightweight, durable pebbled leather (currently available in four colorways) it offers ample interior space (a 37L volume, to be precise) plus two large pockets, a phone slip, and a key clip, as well as snaps for Cuyana devotees who want to mix in their System Flap Bag or System Zipper Pouch .

If you're more of a "shop when you get there" traveler, this bag brings the souvenir space without taking up lots of room in your primary bag. Water-repellant and roomy (it holds 32L by volume) it features rugged shoulder straps, plus an extra strap that lets it slip over the handle of roller luggage, and can fold into its own exterior pouch when not in use to make a tidy, handheld bundle.

Some things are classic for a reason. Case in point: this timeless Longchamp tote; just ask T&C 's associate shopping editor, Sophie Dweck, who's been carrying hers for over a decade . Made from sleek, easy-to-clean nylon that comes in a cornucopia of colors, it features a simple, spacious interior and strong leather straps that ensure it can stand up to anything your travels throw at it, and look good doing it.

Looking for a tote that's as useful in your day-to-day as it is when you're far away? This multi-use tote has racked up thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon for its versatility. A separate, vented shoe compartment makes it as friendly to gym sessions as beach trips, while its multiple pockets keep essentials organized. It also includes a luggage strap and a USB charging port so you can plug in your tech without rummaging through your bag for your battery pack, and comes in two sizes and almost 30 shades so it will match your travel style.

One reviewer writes: "I must say, it exceeded my expectations in every way! This bag is the perfect blend of style and functionality, making it a must-have for any woman on the go."

Type-A packers, take note: this 100% recycled polyester is all about options. Its four colorways can be worn crossbody, carried in hand, or over the shoulder, and include a zippered exterior pocket, a luggage sleeve, two water bottle holders, and a padded laptop sleeve—all with Everlane's signature modern minimalist vibe.

Available in 20 colorways and textures, this canvas tote features a luggage sleeve that also doubles as a tech pouch so your gadgets will always be at the ready. The sturdy construction and bargain price tag have made it a hit with reviewers, who site its roomy 16.5" x 9" x 14" size and comfort.

One reviewer writes: "I am so happy with this purchase! Reasonable price, large main compartment, and a few zip compartments to organize smaller items. Bag fits perfectly under airline seat, even when stuffed FULL. It stayed in place when I had it on top of my roller bag, and I noticed the shape of it kept it from making everything tip forward (which happened with my previous bag)."

For a travel bag that you can use as a purse all trip, this simple Madewell leather tote brings a perfect mix of style and space (12.75" x 12.75" x 7.5".) It even comes with an interior strap that allows you to change the shape, and doubles as a keyring.

True L.L. Bean lovers know that the brand's classic Boat and Tote bag is hard to beat—after all, it's been one of their signature styles since 1944. Crafted from rugged cotton canvas, it's tested to hold up to 500 pounds, so no matter how much you manage to overpack, this bag is guaranteed to take it on. And with four sizes and two interior lengths to choose from, as well as a dozen colors, there's a perfect one for all your needs.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
