Cherryville baseball, KM softball trending upward in latest Gastonia, Shelby rankings

Here’s a look at how high school baseball teams in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties rank going into play April 15, 2024.

Trending upward

• Cherryville baseball: Could coach Scott Heavner’s baseball club be preparing for another late season surge? A two-game sweep of East Gaston may indicate such, Cherryville (9-7, 6-2 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A) outscoring their Southern Piedmont 1A/2A rival 16-3 during last week’s series. 
• Kings Mountain softball: There’s still a lot of softball left to play, but the Lady Mountaineers (11-0, 7-0 Big South 3A) last week overcame their greatest hurdle in Big South 3A play with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Crest. It was the Chargers’ first loss to a league opponent since 2017, when it was part of the old South Mountain 2A/3A Conference. 

On a downward slide

• East Gaston baseball: A slump couldn’t come at a worse time for the Warriors, losers of three straight games after being swept by Cherryville in the teams’ two-game set. 
• East Gaston softball: The Warriors’ softball team finds itself in a more precarious situation after a pair of close losses to Cherryville last week. East Gaston (7-5, 5-3 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A) goes into this week’s two-game set with Burns knowing it must win both games to remain in contention for an automatic NCHSAA 2A playoff berth.

LAST WEEK'S HONOR ROLL: Here are Gastonia, Shelby area spring sports top performers for Week 7 of the 2024 season

• Burns (18-0, 8-0 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A): The Bulldogs can clinch their spot in the NCHSAA 2A playoffs with a win in either of two games against East Gaston. 
• Gaston Christian (10-2, 3-1 NCISAA Metrolina): The Eagles have averaged just shy of 11 runs per game during their seven-game win streak, including 51 total in their last four. Tuesday’s matchup with Hickory Grove Christian will provide a good litmus test as the NCISAA postseason looms.
• East Lincoln (14-3, 6-2 Western Foothills 3A): There are no off nights in Western Foothills 3A, something the Mustangs will learn this week in pivotal matchups against St. Stephens and rival North Lincoln, teams which earned wins over East Lincoln earlier this season.
• North Lincoln (11-4, 5-2 Western Foothills 3A): North Lincoln takes on both of Western Foothills 3A’s top teams this week, starting with a home date against Foard followed Friday night with a high stakes matchup against rival East Lincoln.
• Kings Mountain (12-4, 7-0 Big South 3A): The Mountaineers can’t get caught looking ahead to series against South Point and Crest just yet. A busy week looms for Kings Mountain, traveling to North Gaston on Monday before a two-game set against Forestview. 
• South Point (10-4, 8-0 Big South 3A): The home stretch begins for the Red Raiders, their stiffest tests in Big South 3A play coming over the next three weeks in the form of Crest, Kings Mountain and North Gaston.
• Lincoln Charter (11-5, 10-0 Catawba Shores 1A/2A) : The Eagles have won eight of their last nine games. Senior standouts Brody Thompson and Jacob Smith lead the way, each hitting above .400 and combining for six home runs and 29 RBIs.
• Stuart Cramer (9-6, 4-4 Big South 3A): Since being swept mid-March by Kings Mountain, the Storm have won seven of their last 11 games, including a sweep of Crest in which it allowed two runs in their two-game series.
• Kings Mountain (11-0, 7-0 Big South 3A) : With her team’s bats silenced, pitcher Maddie Huffman limited Crest to two hits with 17 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory. 
• Crest (10-3, 7-1 Big South 3A): Aidan Ledbetter allowed one run on one hit last week in 11 ⅔ innings last week, earning a no-hitter against Stuart Cramer and came just shy of doing the same to a vaunted Kings Mountain lineup.
• Cherryville (12-2, 6-0 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A): The Lady Ironmen passed their most significant test of the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A season, sweeping East Gaston to take a commanding lead in league play. Cherryville now leads the conference by two games.
• East Lincoln (7-5, 6-2 Western Foothills 3A): The Lady Mustangs rebounded from a 4-3 loss to Foard in extra innings by outscoring West Iredell and Statesville by a combined score of 36-2 later in the week.
• North Lincoln (10-4, 4-3, Western Foothills 3A): It’s a big week for the Knights, who hope to nudge themselves back into contention in Western Foothills 3A against league leaders Foard and North Iredell.
• Forestview (9-4, 6-2 Big South 3A): The Jaguars have averaged 16.8 runs per game during a five-game winning streak. 
• Lincoln Charter (10-4, 9-0 Catawba Shores 1A/2A): The Eagles have won four in a row, averaging 11.3 runs during the stretch.
• East Gaston ((7-5, 5-3 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A): A conference title may not be in the cards, but the Warriors’ hope for a NCHSAA 2A state playoff berth remains in play Tuesday as they travel to East Gaston.

WNC high school baseball power rankings Week 8: Tuscola moves into top 3

The top five teams from last week's power rankings all lost, including several in games against each other. That led to little movement at the top of this week's rankings, but one team did drop four spots.

Here are the  Western North Carolina high school baseball power rankings for Week 8.

1. Roberson (14-3)

It was the Reno Jeter Game on Tuesday as the senior pitcher no-hit Erwin, striking out 10 batters over seven innings, and drove in one run in the 2-0 victory. After Erwin walked off the Rams on Friday, Roberson did the same to Combine Academy National in a 5-4 victory on Saturday.

Last week: No. 1. This week: at Parkview (Ga.) (Thursday), at Science Hill (Tenn.) (Friday)

2. West Henderson (14-2)

West Henderson cruised through its first two games last week in run-rule victories, including a 16-1 beatdown of No. 4 Reynolds. The Falcons couldn't earn the midweek sweep of the Rockets, however,

Last week: No. 2. This week: vs. Franklin (Tuesday), at Franklin (Thursday)

3. Tuscola (12-4)

The Mountaineers faced three out-of-state teams last week and walked away with two quality wins and an extra-innings loss. After jumping Reynolds this week, the two play in a marquee matchup Wednesday to settle the matter.

Last week: No. 4. This week: at Smoky Mountain (Tuesday), vs. No. 4 Reynolds (Wednesday), vs. Smoky Mountain (Friday)

4. Reynolds (9-5)

Despite earning one of the season's best wins over West Henderson, the Rockets slip a spot after getting blown out 16-1 by the same Falcons team. Senior shortstop Hayden Craig came up big in the win, driving in three runs.

Last week: No. 3. This week: at North Buncombe (Tuesday), at No. 3 Tuscola (Wednesday), vs. North Buncombe (Friday)

5. Erwin (8-4)

The Warriors ran into an unhittable Jeter on Tuesday, as the Roberson pitcher no-hit Erwin in a 2-0 victory. Erwin bounced back Friday with freshman Cole Miller delivering a walk-off double to steal a win over the No. 1 Rams.

Last week: No. 7. This week: vs. Brevard (Monday), vs. Enka (Tuesday), at Enka (Friday)

6. Hayesville (9-2)

The Yellow Jackets are on a nine-game winning streak and outscored their opponents 51-10 over three games last week. Junior third baseman Chance Hughes drove in seven runs while going 8-for-13 during the week.

Last week: No. 5. This week: vs. Towns County (Ga.) (Monday), at Murphy (Tuesday), vs. Murphy (Friday)

7. North Henderson (11-5)

The Knights have won six in a row after sweeping East Henderson last week. Junior Stash Spear drove in four runs in the two games and hit a home run.

Last week: No. 8. This week: vs. Hendersonville (Monday), at Polk County (Tuesday), vs. R-S Central (Wednesday)

8. Robbinsville (7-3)

A 2-1 week should have the Black Knights feeling good as they near a showdown with No. 6 Hayesville. Ethan Orr, the WNC midseason baseball player of the year poll winner, drove in two runs and struck out 10 batters in a 6-2 win over Andrews on Friday.

Last week: No. 9. This week: at Hiwassee Dam (Tuesday), vs. Rosman (Thursday), vs. Hiwassee Dam (Friday)

9. Asheville Christian Academy (7-7)

ACA is the newest entrant into the top 10 after handing then-No. 6 Christ School two big losses. Senior pitcher Seth Coxie struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in a 12-0 victory on Wednesday, then drove in a run on Friday in a 2-1 win.

Last week: Unranked. This week: vs. Upstate (S.C.) (Thursday), vs. Hickory Christian Academy (Saturday)

10. Christ School (10-7)

The Greenies are 3-5 over their past eight games and have fallen to No. 10 after sitting as high as No. 3 in the power rankings. The latest misstep came last week – Christ School got swept by No. 9 ACA – and the schedule doesn't get easier.

Last week: No. 6. This week: vs. Carmel Christian (Tuesday), at Charlotte Catholic (Wednesday), vs. Covenant Day (Saturday)

Top 25 national high school baseball rankings: No. 5 Corona (California) wins National High School Invitational (4/15/2024)

P laying in a tournament against national competition for the second straight week, Corona took home the title at the National High School Invitational in Cary, North Carolina on Saturday.

Corona shut out three of its four opponents and used a last-inning comeback to take down Huntington Beach 6-5 in the semifinal round. The Panthers' big weekend moved them up to No. 5 in this week's national baseball rankings.

1. Doral Academy (Doral, Fla.) (20-1)

Last week: 1

Miami commit Gabriel Milano hit his second home run of the season to help the Firebirds hold off American Heritage 7-6 on Thursday.

2. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) (11-0)

Last week: 2

Moeller went 4-0 last week including a doubleheader sweep of St. Edward and St. Ignatius on Saturday. Two games with Elder are up to begin this week.

3. Catholic (Baton Rouge, La.) (33-2)

Last week: 3

Catholic has scored double digit runs in seven straight games and has yet to allow more than two runs over their current 14-game winning streak.

4. Jackson Prep (Miss.) (29-2)

Last week: 4

The Patriots have won 14 straight games, cruising through district play. LSU-signee Konnor Griffin is hitting .543 with 19 extra-base hits and has stolen 65 bases.

5. Corona (Calif.) (19-2)

Last week: 6

Corona went 4-0 at the NHSI in North Carolina, beating Huntington Beach and Orange Lutheran in the final two rounds. They'll return to league play with three games against Corona Centennial this week.

6. Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.) (17-1)

Last week: 7

The Warriors have dominated on both sides of the ball during their current 10-game winning streak. They've allowed 23 runs in 18 games this season.

7. Flower Mound (Texas) (26-3)

Last week: 8

Flower Mound shutout Coppell in two district games during the week and got past Byron Nelson 9-8 on Saturday. The Jaguars will play Plano East twice this week.

8. Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) (18-5)

Last week: 11

Orange Lutheran advanced to the championship game of the NHSI before falling to Corona, evening their season series at one. They'll play a three-game series with Mater Dei this week.

9. Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.) (18-4-1)

Last week: 10

The Wolverines took home third place at the NHSI, losing to Orange Lutheran on day three. They'll return to the Mission League with three games against Loyola beginning Tuesday.

10. Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) (21-4)

Last week: 15

Parkview swept three games from Archer, outscoring them 37-5. They'll play a three-game series with Brookwood to close out the regular season.

11. Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) (15-6-1)

Last week: 19

The Eagles took two of three games from JSerra, moving into a tie for first place in the Trinity League. They'll play three games with Servite this week.

12. North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.) (17-2)

Last week: 20

Andrew Cutler went 3-3 and drove in two runs in a 5-1 win against Palm Beach Central. The Eagles will travel to Stoneman Douglas on Tuesday.

13. North Cobb Christian (Kennesaw, Ga.) (24-2)

Last week: 21

The Eagles shutout streak ended at four games but they beat Southside Christian to finish the week 3-0.

14. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) (17-3)

Last week: 5

After shutting out Tampa-Jesuit on Tuesday, the Ascenders lost to Northside Christian 4-1 on Friday. They'll take on Jesuit again on Tuesday night.

15. Tomball (Texas) (25-3)

Last week: 23

The Cougars scored 34 runs across their three games last week, stretching their winning streak to 15 games. They'll play Klein Cain twice this week to close out the regular season.

16. Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif.) (17-3)

Last week: 13

The Warriors split two games with Serra last week and closed out the week with a 5-2 win over St. Francis. Stanford commit Quinten Marsh has a 0.95 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 44 innings.

The Lions followed up their first loss of the season by taking both games against John Paul II last week. They'll take on Parish Episcopal this week.

18. Bob Jones (Madison, Ala.) (32-6)

Last week: 22

Bob Jones beat Athens on Monday before sweeping three games from Florence. They'll play James Clemens this week in the final series of the regular season.

19. Argyle (Texas) (19-4-2)

Last week: 24

The Eagles bounced back from a loss to Flower Mound by taking both district games from Ryan last week. Two games against Grapevine are up this week.

20. Westminster Christian (Miami, Fla.) (16-3)

Last week: 25

The Warriors beat Braddock and True North Classical last week, holding both teams to one run. Grand Canyon commit Jose Lopez hit two home runs in Tuesday's 5-1 victory.

21. Central (Phenix City, Ala.) (33-3)

Last week: 9

Central went 3-2 last week, taking both games from Dothan in Saturday's doubleheader. They'll close out the regular season with two games against Smiths Station.

22. Harlem (Ga.) (26-1)

Last week: 14

Harlem's perfect regular season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Greenbrier on Tuesday. They'll play Morgan County twice this week before playoffs begin.

23. Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) (18-4)

Last week: 16

The Huskies split two games with Perry before ending the week with wins over Chandler and Liberty. Georgia Tech-signee Drew Rogers hit two home runs against Perry on Monday, giving him 10 on the season.

24. Valley View (Jonesboro, Ark.) (18-1)

Last week: NR

Valley View has been cruising through conference play since dropping a non-league game to Magnolia Heights. They've scored 13 runs of more in four of the past five games.

25. Pensacola Catholic (Pensacola, Fla.) (20-1)

The Crusaders have scored 67 runs over their past five games. Auburn-signee Chris Rembert is hitting .569 with eight home runs.

• Kentucky, East Carolina crack Week 8 baseball Power 10 rankings

Here are the latest Power 10 rankings for Week 8 of college baseball.

1. Arkansas ( Previous: 1)

Arkansas holds steady up top after a 4-0 week, a sweep over Ole Miss moving to a 27-3 record.

2. Clemson (2)

The Tigers hold strong too. Clemson swept Notre Dame over the weekend to move to 28-3 on the year. 

3. Texas A&M (3)

Texas A&M also stays put after winning the series over South Carolina. Ryan Prager impressed yet again moving to 6-0 on the year as he fanned 12 on Friday night. 

4. Tennessee (4)

The Vols stand at No. 4 after taking 2 of 3 from Auburn. 

5. Oregon State (5)

Oregon State rounds out the unchanged top 5 after a weekend sweep over Arizona State. 

6. Vanderbilt (6)

Vandy handed LSU its 4th straight SEC series loss and moved to 25-7 on the season after a huge run-rule win in the series finale. Carter Holton fanned 10 as the offense had 14 hits including two home runs and 5 RBI from Braden Holcomb.

7. Duke (8)

Duke moves up a spot with Florida dropping way out. Wallace Clark walked it off for the Blue Devils on Sunday to secure the first sweep in program history over Miami. 

8. Virginia (10)

Virginia moves up as well since Dallas Baptist dropped out. In the series opener against North Carolina, freshman Henry Ford hit three home runs including the go-ahead blast in the eighth inning to pick up a top-10 series win over the Tar Heels. 

9. Kentucky (NR)

And finally, two more teams enter the Power 10.  Kentucky has been turning heads and now has four straight SEC series wins including the latest sweep over Alabama. They pretty much dominated the Tide too, closing out the last two games of the series with a 7-0 win and a 10-1 win. 

Dominic Niman had a complete game shutout on Saturday as he threw 100 pitches and allowed only one Alabama hitter to reach second base. He did not walk a player and struck out seven. Then Mason Moore pitched seven innings on Sunday allowing just one run. An impressive outing for the Wildcats.

10. East Carolina (NR)

And lastly, ECU enters the Power 10. A lot of you have been asking for the Pirates in the top 10 and after two solid weeks following their series loss to UTSA and a few teams dropping out, the Pirates are in. ECU took down NC State mid-week then won the series over FAU. Trey Yesavage registered 11 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings on Friday night.
