Board your overnight flight to Nairobi today.

Welcome to Kenya! Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your hotel.

Please note: Most flights from North America arrive late in the evening.

Climb into 4x4 land cruisers and set out to discover notable landmarks and local culture in and around Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital city.

  • Tour the Karen Blixen Estate, the former coffee plantation where the “Out of Africa” author lived for several years
  • Enjoy an included lunch this afternoon with your group
  • Visit Sandstorm Kenya, a company that began as a maker of safari tents and now employs 40 Maasai craftspeople who hand-make totes, backpacks, and other styles of bags from locally sourced canvas and leather
  • Tour Sandstorm’s facilities to learn how its bags are made, from the sourcing of materials to the finished product
  • Enter the National Museum of Kenya where you’ll explore exhibits that tell the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage

Tonight, get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner served with beer or wine.

Take in sweeping views of the countryside as you journey to the Aberdares, which is a massif, or mountainous area, that lies just west of Mount Kenya National Park.

Enjoy lunch at Aberdare Country Club as zebras, gazelles, warthogs, and other wild animals roam nearby before continuing on to your hotel in the Mount Kenya region. After freshening up, sit down this evening for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Travel through scenic, highland landscapes—and make a photo stop at the equator —on your way to the Great Rift Valley. This astoundingly beautiful region is an important center of ecological study, and its sparkling lakes and steep, rocky escarpments serve as havens for wildlife such as black rhinos, rare Rothschild giraffes, and more than a dozen globally threatened bird species.

  • Continue on to the vast and ancient Lake Naivasha, which, at nearly 6,200 feet above sea level, is the highest of the Great Rift Valley’s three best-known lakes
  • Enjoy an included lunch with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant
  • Join a naturalist guide for an optional game walk near Lake Naivasha, which gets most of its fresh water from the Malewa River that flows from the Aberdare Mountains
  • Keep your eyes peeled for zebras, giraffes, hippos, fish eagles, pelicans, kingfishers, cormorants, flamingos, and other animals and birds as you walk

Please note: For the game walk, travelers should be comfortable walking over grassy paths for one to two hours.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Travel to Lake Nakuru, one of the Great Rift Valley’s “soda lakes,” or extremely salty, alkaline bodies of water where fish can’t survive. Spot some of the many flamingos who make their home here.

Take a morning game drive in a 4x4 land cruiser through Lake Nakuru National Park

Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as zebras, monkeys, and both black and white rhinos

Enjoy an included lunch at a lodge near Lake Nakuru

Head back to your safari lodge and sit down for this evening’s included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Continue through the Great Rift Valley as you travel to the Maasai Mara, a nearly 600-square-mile national reserve in southwestern Kenya known for its vast plains and abundant wildlife. The region is also home to the Maasai people, an indigenous tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists whose livelihood revolves around cattle. The Maasai tribe’s signature—and symbolic—red-and-blue clothing and colorful, beaded jewelry are among many traditions its people have maintained, while other tribes have adopted more modern styles of living.

  • Enjoy an included lunch at your tented safari camp
  • Set out on an afternoon game drive

Try to spot leopards, rhinos, Cape buffalo, lions, and elephants—known collectively as the Big Five

Admire the Maasai Mara’s rolling hills, swaying savanna grasses, and iconic acacia trees

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Today, get to know the awe-inspiring animals and people of the Maasai Mara.

  • Rise before the sun for an early morning game drive—an exhilarating opportunity to spot lions, elephants, and other animals starting their day in search of food
  • Head back to your tented safari camp for an included lunch
  • After lunch, climb aboard a safari vehicle for an afternoon game drive, keeping your eyes peeled for prides of lions snoozing in the shade, giraffes ambling among leafy trees, and sturdy warthogs trotting through tall grass

Later, immerse yourself in the Maasai way of life during a visit to a local boma, or Maasai homestead.

  • Join male members of the Maasai tribe in their signature adamu, or jumping dance
  • Tour a functioning Maasai boma—a collection of mud-hut homes—and discover the tribe’s history and heritage
  • Visit a market where Maasai people sell handiworks and crafts, and learn how money from visitors’ purchases sustains the tribe
  • Receive your own Maasai name and learn the meaning behind it

Spend the morning relaxing and catching up on sleep, or add an excursion.

Then, admire Kenya’s dramatic scenery as you travel through the Great Rift Valley back to Nairobi, stopping along the way for an included lunch.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner in Nairobi, served with beer or wine.

Maasai Mara Hot Air Balloon Ride

From $449 per person

Travel south to Amboseli National Park today. This roughly 150-square-mile natural area sits against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, and is known for its population of wild African elephants.

  • Enjoy an included lunch at your safari lodge or camp
  • Set out on an afternoon game drive after lunch
  • Ride along with your expert driver and naturalist guide in search of elephants, leopards, lions, baboons, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffaloes, kudus, hippos, rhinos, wildebeest, and dozens more animals

Join your fellow tour mates for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

This morning, head out on your first game drive of the day and marvel at Amboseli National Park’s huge herds of elephants, as well as ostriches, leopards, lions, and rhinos.

This afternoon, join your group for an included lunch before your second game drive through Amboseli National Park.

Celebrate your trip at tonight’s farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to Nairobi this morning. Then, relax in a dayroom before boarding your flight home tonight or early tomorrow morning, or extend your stay to explore Tanzania.

Arrive home today.

Stop in the city of Arusha for an included lunch, then continue on to Tarangire National Park, where you’ll marvel at one of Africa’s largest elephant herds and keep watch for more than 500 species of birds.

Later, set out on an afternoon game drive. This evening, sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Begin today with a visit to Olduvai Gorge. Nicknamed the “Cradle of Mankind,” this site is where British paleoanthropologists and archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey excavated 1.8 million-year-old human fossil fragments in 1959. Cap off your tour with a scenic picnic lunch.

After lunch, continue to Serengeti National Park, a nearly 5,800-square-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site and true natural wonder. The park’s southern reaches play a key role in the Great Migration, a spectacular and cyclical year-round event during which nearly 2 million wildebeest travel between Tanzania and Kenya to procreate and to search for food and water. This afternoon, set out on a game drive through the park, spotting wildebeest, buffaloes, lions, and other animals from your safari vehicle.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Continue your exploration of the Serengeti’s endless plains on two game drives.

Look for the exceedingly rare black rhino on your morning game drive

Feast on an included lunch in the open air of the Serengeti

  • Embark on an afternoon game drive to see the Moru Kopjes, stunning granite formations rising out of the plains

Enjoy an included dinner this evening with your group, served with beer and wine.

Transfer to the 3 million-year-old Ngorongoro Crater. Covering more than 100 square miles, it’s the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, and a vital food and water source for wildlife.

  • Enjoy lunch before heading out on an afternoon game drive
  • Descend in your safari vehicle 1,000 feet into Ngorongoro Crater, which is home to one of the world’s densest lion populations
  • Observe an array of animals, including hippos, rhinos, zebras, jackals, and endangered wild hunting dogs, on a game drive

This morning, leave the natural splendor of the Ngorongoro Crater behind and make your way back to Arusha—capital of the Arusha region and home to more than 400,000 residents.

  • Join a local guide for a tour of Shanga Foundation, a social enterprise that employs locals with physical disabilities to craft jewelry, glassware, and homewares incorporating recycled materials
  • See how Shanga Foundation artisans use recycled materials and sustainable production methods to make their goods
  • Browse Shanga Foundation’s shop for locally made keepsakes to take home

Following your visit to Shanga Foundation, walk to a nearby coffee plantation.

  • Sit down for an included lunch on the coffee plantation’s grounds
  • After lunch, take a guided tour of the coffee farm to learn how coffee beans are grown, harvested, dried, and produced into the beloved beverage
  • Taste a variety of coffees produced on site

Tonight, sit down at your Arusha lodge to toast your East Africa travels over a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a very fast-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Two 1-night stays
  • Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by 4x4 landcruiser safari vehicles
  • Some transportation by motor coach

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • This tour requires minimal walking. When walking occurs it is over mostly flat terrain, some paved roads, unpaved trails, and dirt paths.
  • Travelers can expect to spend 6-8 hours each day in the game drive vehicle.
  • Travelers should feel comfortable stepping up and down or climbing a small ladder to get in an our of the vehicles.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

  • Temperatures are consistent year round, but vary significantly morning to afternoon, especially at higher altitude regions
  • Travelers should be prepared for cold mornings and evenings (40sF-50sF) with mild afternoons of 70F-mid 80sF
  • Kenya experiences two rainy seasons, masika, which is mid-March through May, and vuli, November-December.
  • Travelers on the Tanzania extension can expect similar weather conditions

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!
  • Most of the transportation on this tour will be via 4X4 landcruiser safari vehicle.
  • The vehicle is open, allowing for panoramic views. Window seats are guaranteed for all travelers.
  • 4x4 landcruiser’s have high step(s) to board the vehicle.
  • Transfers between parks are long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride and the impact that may have on a body.
  • Safari luggage restrictions are strict and strongly enforced. It’s essential that your luggage meet the below requirements:
  • Travelers should bring a soft, flexible duffel bag. No hard suitcases or bags with hard sides are permitted.
  • Bags can be no larger than 34” W by 17” H by 15.” Total baggage weight cannot exceed 44 pounds.
  • One small carry-on bag is also permitted.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on safari vehicles.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures. Quick-dry material is best for hot days outside and a warmer layer may be needed for chilly evenings and early mornings.
  • Wear muted colors for game drives, as bright clothing may scare animals away and blue or black clothing attracts tsetse flies.
  • Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for walking during the day.
  • Pack a swimsuit as many of the hotels have pools that you are free to use at your leisure.
  • Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.
  • Mosquito repellent, binoculars, and a flashlight are highly recommended.
  • A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when other facilities are not readily available while on the road.
  • The Kenyan government has a strict ban on plastic bags. It is illegal to use, sell, or carry plastic bags anywhere in the country under the new law, and violators will face charges including high fines or imprisonment. Please bring reusable cloth bags if you plan to go shopping on tour, and do not pack any plastic bags, including small resealable bags.
  • Transfers between parks are long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel to strike the balance of comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Accommodations are typically three and four star hotels.

  • Your hotels will have Wifi, but it may be limited to common areas.
  • Elevators in hotels are not guaranteed.
  • Electricity is not guaranteed throughout the night at some of the safari camps.
  • Some hotels are designed so that each room feels like its own secluded cabin and customers will need to walk outside to reach the common areas.
  • Kenya operates on the British standard 240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • Tanzania (on the tour extension) operates on 220-240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • We cannot guarantee that your hotel accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with the hotel once they are confirmed about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
  • Local governments may require proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine. This is only required of travelers arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever virus transmission (Please note: This does not include the U.S. or Canada). Visit cdc.gov/yellowfever for more information.
  • If you are traveling on the tour extension to Tanzania you’re required to provide proof of a yellow fever vaccination (often referred to as a yellow card) or a statement of medical exemption from the vaccine.
  • If you will be traveling with medical equipment that requires electricity, such as a CPAP, please contact our customer experience team so we can ensure that this can be accommodated.
  • Drink bottled water only. Refrain from ingesting tap water, including when brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they’re cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
  • Bring a small first aid kit, including antacids, anti-diarrhea medication, motion sickness medication, and any prescription medications in your carry on luggage.
  • This tour includes 9 lunches and 9 dinners. Included meals may be plated set menus, buffet or family style depending on the location. Dinners include one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink and water, coffee and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Included lunches may be picnic style during some longer driving days.
  • Cuisine in your game lodges reflects the region’s British colonial influence—you may find that many locals pause for afternoon tea. Most restaurants offer curries and other South Asian cuisine brought over by the many Indian immigrants. Maize, sweet potatoes, and pineapple were brought over by the Portuguese, and beef has been a staple since the 1600s.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in US dollars.
  • We recommend tipping $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend tipping $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Kenyan shilling on this tour as well as USD (and the Tanzanian shilling on the tour extension).
  • You may be able to purchase Kenyan shillings in advance from your local bank or a foreign currency exchange retailer, such as Travelex. There is no limit on importing currency into Kenya, but please note travelers are restricted from carrying more than $100,000 in Kenyan shillings out of the country (and cannot export more than $5,000 in Tanzanian shillings from Tanzania on the tour extension).
  • We recommend that you carry small amounts of U.S. dollars (only crisp bills printed in 2004 or later, $1, $5, $10 bills are ideal).
  • ATMs are most readily available in Nairobi; while there, we recommend taking out cash in small bills to have on safari.
  • Major North American credit cards are accepted but can be difficult to use in remote locations (Visa is the most widely accepted).
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey in Kenya.
  • With your tour director, you will have experienced drivers that also provide additional commentary.
  • You will have a different Tour Director for your tour extension in Tanzania than on your main tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Kenya (and Tanzania on the tour extension) is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 8 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 8pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
  • Animal Welfare: Take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart during included tour activities and your free time. Do not touch, do not feed, and maintain a respectful distance from wild animals. Wild animals encountered on tour should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior. If you feel we are not meeting these commitments, please share your feedback with us.
  • Animal Welfare: Avoid buying any exploitative wildlife products such as tortoise shell or shark fin soup.

Kenyan Safari Tours, Luxury Kenya Safari & Wildlife Experiences

ef trip kenya

Our Kenya Vacations and Tours

Kenya is synonymous with wildlife (and to some, perhaps marathon runners) and rightly so. A Kenya safari really is one of the top ways to see wild animals in their natural habitat, in wildlife reserves and in national parks. Kenya is a country of diverse landscapes with sweeping plains where the animal kingdom roams free. There are also majestic snow-capped mountains (Mount Kenya is the second highest peak on the African continent after Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching 5200 metres/17,050 feet) as well as tropical palm-fringed beaches next to coral reefs along the Indian Ocean coast. The Central Highlands are bisected by the Great Rift Valley from north to south. It can all be enjoyed on a Kenya vacation.

Kenya Trip Highlights

Nairobi , a thriving modern capital in the south of Kenya, is usually the starting point en route to a Kenya safari. The centre of the city has many modern high-rise buildings and a number of parks and gardens of which the best known is Uhuru Park. Both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya can be seen on a clear day from Nairobi. While here, consider a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the Danish author who wrote: “Out of Africa.” The Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi attracts many visitors, with its open-air seating and specialty selection of game meats.

Kenya Safari

Kenya’s game parks, reserves and other wildlife protection areas host some of the world’s wildest game, making Kenya ‘the home of the safari.’ The diversity of games in Kenya is simply astounding. There are numerous parks and reserves for your game-viewing safari. Most offer the opportunity to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) along with almost all of Africa’s best-known animal and bird life. With 11% of the world’s species, and some 1089 different varieties, Kenya’s birding is also among the best in the world. There are several types of accommodation to choose from – lodges, tented camps, and resorts. One can try a fly-in Kenyan safari from Nairobi directly into Amboseli or Maasai Mara National Parks . Most Kenya safaris are undertaken in vehicles with around eight passengers and an experienced game tracker/guide who is also the driver.

Kenya National Parks and Safaris

Maasai mara.

The Maasai Mara is a large national park situated in the southwest corner of Kenya bordering the Serengeti in Tanzania and sharing the same ecosystem. The annual wildebeest migration here is a natural cycle that replenishes and renews the grasslands of East Africa. This is one of the remarkable wildlife attractions that make Kenya one of the best wildlife destinations in the world. The migration which also includes zebra and gazelle starts northbound around July and returns southbound around October. The migration can be experienced on early morning game drives in customized vehicles, walking safaris with Maasai warrior guides, horseback safaris in areas surrounding the Mara, or even on a hot air balloon safari over the herds. The park has 570 different species of birds for the bird-watching enthusiast when travelling to Kenya. Maasai Mara is also home to the endangered black rhino. It also ranks among Africa’s best destinations for seeing big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site located to the east of the Great Rift Valley, about 175 kilometres/110 miles northeast of Nairobi. Mount Kenya is an important water tower, providing water for about 50% of the country’s population and producing 70% of Kenya’s hydroelectric power. Animal sightings here on a Kenyan safari can include elephants, tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, black-fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbucks, waterbucks and elands.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru National Park lies in Central Kenya, 140 kilometres/88 miles northwest of Nairobi in the Rift Valley. The ecosystem comprises the lake, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with flamingos and other water birds being the major attractions of the area. There are around 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 different species.

The Aberdare National Park covers the higher areas of the Aberdare mountain ranges of Central Kenya. The topography is quite diverse with deep ravines that cut through the forested slopes. Animals easily observed in the park include the black rhino, leopard, baboon, black and white colobus monkey and sykes’ monkey. Visitors can also indulge in picnics, trout fishing in the rivers and camping in the moorlands. Bird viewing is rewarding when travelling to Aberdare with over 250 species of birds existing in this park.

On a Kenya Safari in Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is also located in the Rift Valley. The ecosystem, mainly savannah grassland, spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet the Maasai tribespeople and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro on a Kenya vacation.

Samburu

Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and semi-desert park again located in the Rift Valley. Due to its remote distance and the fact that it was inaccessible for many years, the park has retained a naturally serene feeling. Besides the numerous wildlife found in this game reserve, the park is also a bird haven. You are guaranteed to see cheetahs, lions, leopards, impalas, buffalo, hippos, dik-diks, zebra, giraffe and oryx. Elephants are also spotted during this time, and you can watch the Nile crocodiles swim in the river on a Kenyan safari.

Other places to visit on a Kenya vacation

Something that can be a welcome addition to your Kenya safari is to head to the coast to unwind on the Indian Ocean. Mombasa is an atmospheric port offering white sand beaches and coral reefs. The air here is filled with the scent of spices and you will often see locals in colourful traditional clothing. The Old Town is very attractive with its narrow winding streets. Another well-known resort is Lamu Island, reached by ferry or air from Mombasa or air from Nairobi. It is known for its buildings made of coral stone and mangrove timber and for its corridors, verandas and elaborately carved wooden doors. Diani Beach, 30 kilometres/18 miles south of Mombasa has a 10 kilometre/6 mile long beach with sparkling white sands and lush greenery, an ideal stopover on a Kenya vacation.
