There's plenty of good stuff in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. One of the most exciting aspects of the OS that isn't getting enough hype is mobile Safari extensions . 1Password has kicked things off by releasing a desktop-like extension for its password manager that users will love.

The 1Password Safari extension looks very similar to the desktop version, as shown off by 1Password . While Apple made it so you can autofill passwords from an app like 1Password a while ago, having it integrated directly into the browser creates a more desktop-like experience that'll make dealing with your passwords more pleasant.

In the app's description, 1Password describes its extension as "our desktop-class Safari extension for 1Password members using the latest version of iOS and iPadOS!"

Based on early impressions, it really looks like a desktop experience. It makes us rather excited for what other app developers could do with desktop-like extensions on iPhone and iPad.

Some of the features offered by the extension include contextual inline filling suggestions, the ability to fill in logins, credit cards, identities, email addresses, and addresses, auto-filling  two-factor authentication codes, QR code scanning for easy setup of two-factor authentication, and plenty of other stuff.

The release of 1Password for mobile Safari is just the first step in what we hope will be a long line of Safari extensions. There's already been a Honey extension release, and we expect plenty of other popular desktop extensions to make their way to mobile Safari.

Ratings and Reviews

Getting worse by the day.

Autofill doesn't work on half the pages. Editing any item now requires opening a new webpage instead of editing in the plugin itself. Touch ID doesn't work and master password is required every time. To top it all, the main app (version 8) has been removed from the App Store and now requires a download/install from the website - which seems a suspicous way for 1Password to circumvent Apple's App Privacy disclosure and security checks.

1Password Releases Safari Extension for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15

With the release of iOS and iPadOS 15 today, the popular password management app 1Password has released an accompanying update that brings its desktop-class extension to the iPhone and iPad .

With its Safari extension on ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌, 1Password users now have immediate access to all their passwords and 1Password entries right inside of Safari, including in-page suggestions. 1Password for Safari uses on-device machine learning to automatically fill in the login process of complicated websites and even automatically fills in two-factor authentication codes.

On iPadOS 15, 1Password's extension is even more feature-rich, featuring a complete in-Safari user interface that "turbocharges any ‌iPad‌." 1Password along with its Safari extension is introducing other app improvements and bug fixes. Save your passwords

To save a login, enter your username and password. Then choose Save in 1Password .

You can edit the title of the login and the vault where you want to save it. Then click Save .

To update an incorrect or incomplete login, make your changes, then choose Save in 1Password and click Update .

Fill logins and other items

If 1Password suggests more than one item, you can use the arrow keys to select the one you want.

Or start typing to find it.

Sign in to sites with a passkey

To save a passkey, find a passkey-supported website. Depending on the website, you may need to create an account with a username and password before you can create a passkey.

When you choose the option to create a passkey, 1Password will offer to save it. If you have an existing Login item for the website saved in 1Password, you can choose to update it by adding the passkey. Or you can save the passkey as a new item.

The next time you visit the sign-in page for that website and choose the option to sign in with a passkey, 1Password will show you a list of your saved passkeys. Click Sign in beside the one you want to use.

Sign in to sites with a provider

To save a login for a site where you want to sign in with a supported sign-in provider, like Google or Facebook, sign in to the website with the provider you want to use, then click Save item .

Choose where you want to save the item, select the login for the provider you signed in with, then click Save .

The next time you visit the sign-in page for that website, 1Password will offer to sign you in to the site with the provider you saved in the item. Click Sign in next to the provider you want to sign in with.

Use a suggested password

1Password suggests strong passwords when you’re changing a password or signing up for a new account.

Create a custom password

Adjust the settings for your new password, then copy it to the clipboard or fill it on the page.

To see all the passwords you’ve created, click Password Generator History below the password generator.

Search 1Password

Searching is the fastest way to find what you need in 1Password.

To search in 1Password, open the pop-up and start typing.

To cancel the current search, click or press Esc.

View and edit items

To view an item’s details, click it. Or use the arrow keys to select it.

To mark an item as a favorite, click and choose Add to Favorites .

To copy any field, click it.

To open the pop-up in a new window*, click and choose Open in New Window .

To edit an item, click and choose Edit . The item will open in a new tab where you can add tags or custom fields , move it , archive it, or delete it.

* If you’ve turned on integration with the 1Password app, this will open in the 1Password app.

Use drag and drop to fill in apps

To fill in an app, drag your login details from 1Password to it. For example, drag your password to the password field in the app.

You can also use drag and drop in your browser. Fill answers to security questions, membership numbers, and more.

Fill one-time passwords

You can use 1Password as an authenticator for a site that supports two-factor authentication. First, find the site on 2fa.directory and follow the instructions to turn on two-factor authentication for the site.

Click > Scan QR Code to save it to your 1Password item. 1Password can then fill your one-time passwords any time you need to sign in to that site.

Switch accounts

To see everything, click All Accounts . To see only the items for a specific account, click All Vaults under the name of the account you want.

Use Watchtower

Watchtower tells you about password breaches and other security problems on the websites you have saved in 1Password.

If any of your items require action, you’ll see an alert banner with more information at the top of the item in 1Password.

Share items

You can securely share copies of passwords and other items you’ve saved in 1Password with anyone, even if they don’t use 1Password.

To share an item, open the pop-up, find the item you want to share, and select it. Click and choose Share .

You can choose when the link expires and who to share it with. Then click Get Link to Share . Click Copy , then send the link to the person or people you want to share the item with, like in an email or text message.

If your browser’s built-in password manager is interfering with 1Password

If your browser’s built-in password manager is interfering with 1Password, you can turn it off:

• Select General , then make sure Make 1Password the default password manager in this browser is turned on.

If you use different passwords for additional 1Password accounts

When you unlock 1Password in your browser, only accounts using the same password are unlocked. To unlock an account that has a different password, lock 1Password, then unlock it using the password for that account.

To make sure you always have access to your 1Password accounts, use the same password for all of them . If you signed up for accounts with different passwords, you can change them .

Passwords are one of the banes of most people’s online lives. Even though passkeys (where you can use a second device to prove you are you and gain access) are beginning to make things easier, it will be a long time before we move away from the confusing collection of numbers, symbols, and letters (at least one of which should be upper case) that are demanded by online services.

Remembering the various account details for each site or app we use is an overwhelming task, meaning we often resort to having the same login for everything, which is a disaster waiting to happen. To get around this, without having to write down all our passwords in a little book or, worse still, in the notes app on your phone, a password manager is a far more secure and simple solution, as it does all the remembering on your behalf.

Canadian made 1Password has long been a favorite of ours, and the current iteration doesn’t put that status in jeopardy. One advantage it has out of the gate is that the company will actually credit you the remaining months on your current contract if you decide to switch from a rival password manager. But what will you find waiting for you when you install and set up 1Password?

1Password has a nice, clean layout that makes it easy to get to grips with how things work. Along the bottom of the screen, you’ll find four icons for the main areas – Home, Items, Search, and Watchtower.

As you’d imagine, the Home screen is where you’ll normally enter the app, and it’s home to any recently created login details, links to your profile page, and also has several guides that take you through the features on offer. These include setting up your Profile so that it can quickly and automatically fill in online forms. You can have your address plus credit card details, so that when you’re on a site or app and get to the checkout, everything is done for you instead of having to enter the information manually.

1Password can also store other important document information, such as your drivers’ licence, passport, membership cards, secure notes, medical record, social security number, and pretty much whatever else you want to store that you can access easily wherever you have your device.

Obviously, passwords are the main feature, and the app allows you to either enter them directly or save them when you’re using a browser to log in or update your details. There’s also a section that lets you know which accounts can use passkeys, which can then all be stored in 1Password. All of these will then be auto-filled for you when you reach the login page of the relevant site or app. On a Mac you’ll need the browser extensions installed, all of which are free. There’s ones for Safari (which has had improvements made to ensure auto-fill works better than in the past, where certain sites would make it difficult for the feature to be implemented properly), Chrome and pretty much every other main browser.

The Items section is where you can organize the passwords and secure information. These can be stored in a general vault or separated into specific ones for things like Work, Travel, Home and Shared. This can be helpful on a family plan, where you can make the Netflix and Spotify account details available to all, but stop anyone being able to run amok with your Amazon account.

Search does what you’d expect, while Watchtower analyzes the overall strength of your online security, with warnings of how often passwords are repeated and which ones have been reported as vulnerable after any security breaches on the apps or sites to which they pertain. It’s a helpful way to see the status of your passwords and what you may need to do to stay safe.

Password managers are only truly useful if their security is up to scratch, and thankfully 1Password is strong in this area. The service uses 256-bit AES end-to-end encryption to keep your details protected at all times, and there’s also a secret key created on your device that adds further layers of security and prevents intercepted data from being cracked.  

The same is true with the Secure Remote Password (SRP) protocol, which allows you to authenticate your details to a site without the information being sent to a server which could compromise security. 

While the principle of a password manager is that you create a single, complex password to access the app (meaning you only have to remember that one rather than all the individual ones to sites), support for Touch ID and Face ID means you don’t have to enter the password every time you log into the app, which is a definite bonus. 

Price and Availability

There are a few different tiers available for 1Password. If you want a single-user account, which you can use on all your devices and comes with 1GB of secure storage, then this will set you back $35.88 p/a (which works out around £30). Alternatively, for a family package that includes five accounts you’ll be looking at $59.88 (around £50) for the year. Business users will also find a variety of options available, which include additional support for Azure AD, Slack, Duo, starting at $95.88 (approx £80) per year. 

All accounts offer a 14-day free trial so you can give 1Password a proper outing before deciding whether you want to switch or not. If you do, then you can migrate all your passwords over and be up and running in no time. 

1Password is available for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, Android, plus has extensions for all the major browsers.

These days a password manager feels like an essential item, as so much of our lives revolve around our online accounts. 1Password is a mature and solid service, with useful features, strong security credentials, and most of all it’s easy and reliable to use. When it comes to password managers , their mobile apps tend to get the most attention. But just as important are the browser extensions they offer. They can make or break the experience of using that platform. 1Password has one of the better ones I've used, and thanks to the company new 2.0 update , it's becoming even more capable.

The headline feature is support for biometric unlock. As long as you have the desktop app installed on your computer, the plugin can open your vault using Touch ID and Windows Hello. To be clear, 1Password already supported those platforms on desktop, but today's update makes it even faster to input your passwords into a website.

The company has also made it easier to create, save and update logins directly from the extension. A tweaked interface will show you all the information 1Password is about to save to your vault. You can edit those details without opening the desktop app and add tags to help with organization. When you're updating any login credentials, the refreshed interface also makes it easier to see what's changing. Lastly, the extension now supports a dark mode so that it won't look out of place next to your browser if you've skinned it that way.

If you're not a 1Password user, these may seem like small additions, but things like support for biometrics are features people have been asking the company to implement for a while. If you already have the extension added to your browser, you don't need to go out of your way to update it. Your browser will automatically update to version 2.0.
